It's been 6 months and still can't access the DLC content...
So, this is a more or less standalone scenario on a new planet. It's a fun way to experience the game with a slightly different tone/re-slice of the base product. It's a kind of story mode with NPC villain - and cut-scenes! - using a variation on the quest/reward system from the base game. Interesting refresh of the cave systems - quite a different feel and experience of being underground relative to base. Overworld also has a different feel to the core game in ways that encourage some fun with things like trains if you care to. The blueprint/progression gating has been altered to encourage (imo) a little more early/mid-game crafting relative to the base game. I found myself crafting various things that I typically wouldn't bother with too much and also spending more time poking around the world and less time trying to automate the universe. And the end game is neat. Another spin on that disorienting planet core gravity weirdness from the base game. This thing cost me what - aud 15 or so - happy to pay that for thoughtful re-slicings of the base game, as often as System Era can push them out. I really appreciated the care that SE obviously gave to (most of) the UI design in the core game (yes, OK, other than the blueprint library/printers interface - soooooooo much time spent guessing and scrolling, hoping to find a blueprint of interest b/c there's no search/filter feature), and I can see similar thoughtfulness in the re-slicing of the game and map design that's present in this DLC. Really don't understand the haters on this one. Suggest appreciating it for what it is. It's not Astroneer v2. It's a re-skin/scenario to run in parallel to the base game.
Having to do a heck ton of in game quests to experience the new DLC is just diabolical.
Is it better than the base game? No.
Is it more Astroneer? Yes.
I am a huge fan of Astroneer. One of the very few (if not only) games I have perfected in recent times. I can understand why some people dislike it.
I consider this a decent "hard mode" Astroneer. There was only one time I felt my death was unfair. The biomes are deep canyons and huge peaks, which make traversing difficult, but I liked it.
-You have access to all resources on this one planet - But things are locked out without progressing in the storms. You can still find things like batteries and medium power systems, if you want to traverse the biomes.
All in all, I found it decent.
I love the hollow earth, and road trip vibe.
Implemented trash broken storm mechanic. Either developers changed, or developer started drugs. Either way, bad DLC.
Big fan of the base game, but the DLC is just not fun. The concepts are all sound but the execution is poor.
Doing stuff in the storms is awful because visibility is so low and the effects can block your view completely if you're in the wrong place, and the terrain, particularly the peaks biome, is awful to traverse.
In the base game if you don't enjoy the way a particular planet plays it's pretty easy to avoid, do the minimum to get the resources you need and then focus your attention elsewhere, in this game you have no choice but to deal with all the biomes.
Because the progression is linear across the planet, the further in you are, the longer you have to trek across the planet to do the next part. I stopped playing because I had started working on the 2nd storm and died, and instead of respawning in my rover, which was in the storm, I ended up all the way back at the starter base, and I just couldn't bring myself to continue.
Really disappointing.
I've never seen a DLC break co-op to the point where we're on completely different biomeswithin the same place
Terrible absolute dog
5/10
puzzles are fun like the storm stuff but omg the world gen is horrid the rover i made got flung because of the horrid cave gen got stuck in one for ages with a field shelter currently stuck in layer 2 with the zeta key because i need the o2 from my rover might just give up ngl base game is so good but god the dlc is horrid
i genrally enjoy it its a small exspansion worth the price. yes it is hard and frustating but that is literly the whole point
Straight way I will say that I enjoyed the DLC quite a lot.
For rating I'd give it around 8/10.
The overall enjoyment came from the locked progression. I know some people like Astroneer's base game for it's being completely free on how you want to progress as everything is unlocked to you from the get go, just get them bytes.
Having locked progression brought new interesting ways of solving problems and reminded me of Expert Minecraft Modpacks, which I especially love.
The progression may seem repetitive with you doing the same tasks, but in different areas, but every time I had to dig deeper and find myself in abyssmally large areas where I had to bridge down... Wow that sent shivers down my spine, mining down through Crust, Mantle and the Core was probably my favourite part of the DLC overall.
I can't deny that the terrain on the Surface is brutal, get your bridging skills on the ready. It was a very unique experience. Annoying sometimes, but fun at the end of the day.
I'd give it a 10/10, but the ending was lacking in my opinion. The story itself is interesting, it's simple, but it has interesting Lore bits about Astroneer world, so I was satisfied. The ending itself was just a bit too Un-boss fight-like ? Would've been cool if we got some sort of an actual Boss fight. Maybe similar to Boss fights in It Takes Two, as they are always based on some mechanics and Astroneer has plenty of those.
Anyways I recommened you buy it and experience it yourself.
The planet itself looks very cool but the terrain is so horrible i dont even know where to start. The system of gathering data in the storms takes a long time and is generally not enjoyable. The locked blueprints give you no freedom combined with the lack of quests other than the main ones makes it very restricted taking away from the best parts of the regular game.
Honestly, I'm not sure how this DLC has received negative reviews when I actually love it. After reading reviews and purchase, I set the science debuff to 0.2 and the speed of research to 0.3 (custom game 70814), which made it very challenging and interesting. I had previously replayed the base game on hardcore mode "less is more" - and compared to that, the resources here are abundant but the terrain is challenging, forcing me to be strategic about my research and decisions. I actually like that there's on only one planet, and I could just gather resources from different biom.
Accessing the three different storms increased the challenge. I didn't fully understand the antagonist's plot, and while defeating him was fairly easy, overall, if you're looking for more challenge, this DLC is a great addition to the base game with the right settings. I'll try replaying it on hardcore mode with fever resources, as I didn't die once.
I recommend this DLC if you enjoy the base game's challenge and prefer fewer unnecessary quests. There's no lots of annoying quests, no snails - just a tougher battle with storms and earn enough bytes as you progress. It's worth a try, it's very affordable, and you support the developers.
I loved the base game and cherished every moment of it. You guys did a great job. However the DLC is a riddled mess of glitches. My tractor glitched through the floor when i died near it, and after digging it out found out that the rest of it i half a planet down, floating in the air. It took me several hours of painstaking "glitchwalking" to get to it, only to find out one of the trailers is still missing and is floating elsewhere. Please fix the DLC. You have a very loyal fanbase and they love what you did with Astroneer. Don't lose them over this mess
I adored the original Astroneer and have bought several copies of it across different platforms and for various members of my family. My son and I were excited to play the expansion together and experience the new story as a team. Within an hour, we were both bored and disappointed with the new content. Want to start by build up your base? Nope. You must progress the story to unlock important schematics that you previously unlocked in the main game. Missing a resource or want to try your luck finding some items underground? Dig as long as you'd like near your base, you won't find the iconic caves from the main game. Maybe just explore the surface - the planet is huge, which could be excellent, except that the terrain is a mess and it is a pain to get anywhere without late-game vehicles. Maybe just build a basic shuttle and explore the planet from orbit? Nope, there doesn't appear to be space travel allowed with your Astroneer character.
This expansion is on rails. You are required to play a particular way and it lacks the rewarding progression of exploring new planets. Regrettably, I cannot recommend it.
English:
"While Astroneer's main game is incredibly enjoyable and rewarding, this DLC feels extremely dull and unnecessary. If you want to keep a good memory of Astroneer after finishing it, you should definitely avoid this DLC."
Really liked the part where you got to unlock the AK47 and Bullets for printing
In short, I do recommend the DLC for astroneer fans. The DLC doesn't bring along many new interesting crafts, it does expand the gameplay and change it substantially, the story additions feel fresh and enigmatic, but there are some serious cons.
That's why people who are new to astroneer or played and didn't fully enjoy the game should think about buying it a bit more, in my opinion, because I'm not sure I can recommend it to them.
1.Astroneer has bugs, not gamebreaking(usually), which really makes them more of a personal touch to the game, but this DLC changes it. The bugs are infuriating. In my experience, three of my medium rovers(so every one of them I had) randomly disapeared throughout the playthrough with all the resources on them, most of the time I was hearing sond of wheels coming from underneath the ground, and when I dug there was nothing there, and many - many more.
2.The caves became just other layers of the surface. It was clear that devs made them as such deliberatly, only for me the game lost its charm because of that. They just feel dead and uninteresting, not uncharted and thrilling.
3.The final boss - The lamest boss fight of all time. In truth - there was no fight at all, you just see a cutscene of it doing something, then bring some little piramids to altars without any resistance and you won.
Writing this while being quite biased because of losing my loot quite a bit thanks to bugs.
i dont like that i cant play sandbox on it. but though i like it.
not worth it
just play the base game
I have about 1,500 hours in ASTRONEER, and it's my most Zen game ever. I was going to buy Glitchwalkers no matter what, but I admit—I didn't even finish the DLC. And I don't think I'm ever going back to it. I wish I'd rather had written System ERA a $10 check, TBH, and not been subjected to this slop. (I love the developer and do want to support them.)
It's not that it's hard (which it kind of is), it's that it's boring and, worse, unnecessarily frustrating.
It's a standalone planet that you access through a portal in your "regular" game. This is made available soon after starting, through some missions. You are dropped on that planet with nothing, no regular missions apply (therefore no mission rewards) and most of your research catalog "hacked" and inaccessible. You cannot go back.
The terrain is the worst from any planet. Enormous cliffs, sheer walls, chock-full of plants that want to kill you, but spawned either on terrain you cannot mine or buried under a ton of other features so you cannot see them. You get no access to the soil centrifuge for a while. There are no usable caves to speak of. There ARE all the resources and gases on this planet, but good luck collecting them without dying.
The way the terrain is generated makes it impossible to go around anything, at least not easily, without progressing through the main "story." You have to make your way through. You do get a paver rather early, but no convenient way to use it for a while. The more advanced resources (like lithium and titanite) are in the most difficult parts of the planet, yet
getting there early is suicide.
One of the biggest strengths of ASTRONEER is that you can play "your way" in all sorts of creative ways to shape your own journey. This is made nigh impossible in the DLC and removes what was arguably, for me, the most fun part of the game. Here you feel like you're forced to follow a harrowing progression for no good reason.
I thought the DLC would be more of an addition to the regular game, something to enhance it or refresh it, but this is not the case. Why couldn't the new planet be part of the regular solar system is beyond me. Skip this, and if you want to support the dev, just buy some of the cosmetics from the store. At least those would add something "fun" to your playtime.
I think its a fun dlc, its basically an entire new planet that you start off on with new biomes and stuff to mine. Getting there in the first place is a bit annoying (the quest you have to do). I'm a little disappointed by the story itself and that they don't mention you basically have to start a brand new save all over again with no starting materials; but I think the price a little too much for the effort they put into it....its basically half the price of the entire base game but only a single new planet. I would have loved if they did an entire new solar system with 8 planets in it or something instead of just a single one. Giving it a positive review on it as it does expand the story and lore from the original game, and its nice to see the devs finally adding something that isn't related to pointless overpriced cosmetics.
I have no complaints. I mean it was challenging and if not as interesting as the base game was still fun to complete.
i would ignore all other reviews and buy it. it is evrything i wanted and more all of the materials on one planet. stop wasting your time and buy it.
Personally I prefer glitchwalkers over the main game. They have more interesting engineering trade offs, especially regarding power generation, astronium, and transportation. Its also so nice how all the gases can be generated on one planet, because it allows for much better automations.
not worth it
its a pretty good DLC, a great planet, great mission objectives which are quite fun ngl and quite worth the price. i belive they made this DLC to get some money to hopefully update the main game
This DLC is very good. The gameplay was great and the scenes are very good. Storms are great and the music that plays when you are in a storm is also very good. Overall, if I were to rate this it would be a 10/10. (I completed the expansion in 2 days.) Good DLC for a good game. I recomend it for ASTRONEER lovers.
It feels.... Recycled? Almost no new content, new planet (albeit pretty) is quite difficult to traverse, the unlocking of schematics is a grind...
Also - the storms? If you were expecting storms like in the early days of Astroneer? Forget it, they are just bubbles that make you suffocate.
Sorry but cannot recommend.
I don't understand the negative reaction to this. The base game has been out forever and there have been so many little side missions dropped in- at the very least the expansion dwarfs the free updates for content.
It's some interesting and very different twists to the formula you're probably very familiar with by now: You start as a blank slate on a big new planet, and the build catalog is gated, so there's a progression tree where before it was completely flat. And you unlock it by unlocking vaults with a little picture puzzle and playing Stormchaser by driving into hurricanes. I dunno I think it's nifty, I can't imagine being mad about it.
I was forced to buy this add on in order to remove a giant portal from my main base. But before I bought it I went into creative mode to try and remove the portal. Now every bit of progress I've made has to be redone, because I no longer have access to missions. And did it even expand the universe in that save? NO! When you go through the portal it creates a completely separate save file. I have uninstalled the game deleted the (now irreversibly stuck with a creative icon) save files. And will not be playing this game again. What a joke.
it's honestly just more astroneer. can't really choose to say i'm mixed about it but it is just more astroneer. you get what you pay for and nothing else.
Glitchwalkers is a pretty great DLC. The prerequisite missions do a good job of making sure you are familiar with the basics of both Astroneer and the new storm system, before allowing access to Aeoluz. Once arriving on Aeoluz itself, I feel like the mechanics of the DLC do a good job of encouraging playing the game a bit differently than the base game.
The new planet may be the only one, but I feel like this allowed the devs to make it much bigger and varied than the base solar system, and the deeper you go underground, it just keeps getting crazier. The new biomes are great, and fit the "glitch" theme very well.
Overall I think it was easily worth the $10 for the amount of gameplay it offered, and hope SES will continue to expand Astroneer with more DLC in the future.
I found this DLC enjoyable, though there are a few notes I should add to clarify why:
-This DLC is essentially a stand-alone hard mode for the game. Going in thinking about it that way helps a lot.
-I played it about 2 years after completing the main game, so the experience was largely re-experiencing a lot of the elements I loved in Astroneer's main game.
-The experience was absolutely made better playing with a friend. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the difficulty as much if it was just struggling alone.
The downsides I'd consider are:
-The hostile plants are *mean*. Fast way to die if you're not paying attention.
-The terrain is rough. Unironically, the soil canisters are the MVP of this DLC.
-The story / quest progression follows a fairly predictable loop. Its not that it's bad, but as a matter of how it feels, does feel weaker compared to the main game's story advancement steps.
Considering all of the above? I do think it was worth the asking price.
Adds nothing new from the base game except frustrating mechanics.
Very good just cant play in creative even though i un locked it in adventchre but it was my brothers server pls help
good dlc for good game
I like how you start relatively fresh. Makes things feel new and the challenge is just right. I built a giant ramp into the crystal caverns and it was awesome. Great DLC!
I really enjoy the base game and I was really looking forward to this DLC. But after a few hours of playtime I have to say I’m pretty disappointed with it. The planet is gorgeous and the visuals are amazing and I kind of like the idea of starting from scratch, but the whole DLC just feels very tidious. Even with 2 people playing and progressing, we found it really annoying. Disappointed unfortunately.
Since this DLC came out, I am having a very difficult time progressing in any way. Game just randomly freezes and stays frozen. Doesn't even crash or anything. Windows treats it as responding yet no input is registered, just last audio clip that was played being looped.
All was good and enjoyable until the very end of the game turned into a jumping platformer. Totally unlike the rest of the game. Played right up to that point and then I will just quit the DLC and say "I win". And will have caution and let others test any new DLC that shows up.
adds fun new content :)
Out of a score from 1 being crap and 10 being super awesome. I'd give this a solid six. If you like Astroneer and have been playing it for a while, it's worth the 9 bucks. The new world of Aeoluz is really cool. The story telling and game play are fun.
Wish they came out with more planets and hardware.
It's mostly Astroneer basic with a new planet and new environments but mostly same hardware and game play. The planet layout is super cool. I wish You didn't have to do a separate game to play this. I finished the game in about a week. At the end you unlock all your tech, built a shuttle expecting to explore the other planets but they are not there.
Overall I'd say good job to the development team.
the dlc has some interesting moments but overall it's the same grind as the base game. i expected to see NPCs and more. not locked out step-by-step blueprints and huge boring landscapes. i did finish it to get the nice costume....
I definitely understand the mixed reactions to this DLC. It has stuff that I liked but these were balanced by periods of frustration and annoyance with how the gameplay changes pan out. Ultimately, I'm leaving a thumbs up because the price was only $10 USD for me and the developer provided a clear warning that it would be harder than the base game. I'd leave a neutral recommendation if I could.
What I Liked
- I felt the story was an interesting addition to the Astroneer universe
- The new biomes look pretty cool
- The gameplay changes did push me to experiment more and try schematics that I usually skipped before (aka the medium rover)
What I Didn't Like
- The planet surface was too large for me, leading to a lot of annoying traversal time
[*] The gameplay changes took away the most fun part of Astroneer for me, which is the variety of ways that I could approach a goal. It felt like I was forced into a specific set of solutions.
I do appreciate that the game developers tried something new. It just wasn't quite my cup of tea. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there was less traversal time on the surface. However, others might complain that a smaller planet wouldn't be worth the price of the DLC. It's hard to keep everyone happy.
Final Note
It's good to remember that game development is difficult, especially when you're following up a beloved base game like Astroneer. Please be kind to the devs.
Among the stars and the planets i alone am the glitched one
Travel to the Aeoluz system in pursuit of a grand threat where you are stuck on one planet smaller than Sylva with every resource in the game on it, took a space exploration game and just cut out the space part, this is just regular Astroneer on easy mode. Bring back the dust storms from early access and the game would be some much better
The number of times I have died from randomly glitching through the ground into a void is unacceptable. While finishing glitchwalkers it happened to me 9 times and caused me to lose two QT-RTGs which is a huge loss in the DLC.
TLDR; Generally frustrating and unoriginal gameplay. Has good visuals.
More detailed assessment (only minor spoilers):
Negatives:
-Frustrating and unoriginal gameplay.
-Terrain is very annoying to navigate, does not give you tools to do so effectively until game end basically.
-Repetitive gameplay loop.
-A lot of things just instantly kill you, with very little ability to see coming or avoid. With large planet size, this makes retrieving dropped inventory annoying.
-For a nominally stand alone DLC, need to play through a lot of base game to get any of it.
-New mechanics do not really add much, most of it plays quite similarly to base game, just with some arbitrary to annoying restrictions.
-Common game breaking bugs. Progression critical things sometimes just don't spawn, or disappear, forcing reloads or resets.
-Having a single large planet is quite performance intensive.
-Despite story seemingly supposed to be a major element, the actual plot is generally mediocre and predictable (though there are one or two actually pretty good moments).
-For a $10 DLC, the playtime is like 6 hours.
-Having only a single planet, with every resource, eliminates any sort of interesting multi-surface logistics.
Positives:
-Good visual appeal, biomes are numerous, original, and look great
-Music is pretty good
-Concept of having a single big planet seems good in theory, allows for greater automation, logistics, and basing. Could make trains actually useful.
-Having technology being gated prevents over-building at the start and then steam rolling the rest.
-The story has one or two good moments.
