Discover ancient temples and modern metropolises, trees with eyes, and mischievous penguins. Make use of hundreds of materials and over two thousand objects to build a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, a medieval castle, underwater arcade, or even a space station.
Starbound has been built from the ground up to be multiplayer and easily moddable. You have the tools to make the universe your own and modify the game to suit your play style - add new items, races, planet types, dungeons, and quests - the possibilities are limitless.

I definitely recommend this game if one enjoys 2-D, sidescrolling survival-craft (similar but not the same as Terraria), and sci-fi space exploration. While vanilla should be played through to grasp the basic mechanics, the modding scene is where the game really shines.
Explore new planets, biomes, vast lore and quests (and additional content with new mechanics). One can hire crew, build a settlement on any planet, build their ship in any way they like (using something like the BYOS system in FU, for example). I put together a collection called A Modicum of Universal Intrigue and Complexity that I have tested extensively for stability and errors and is what I use in my play-throughs now. There is a constant progression that unlocks more quests and content as the player advances and it is such a treat.
I love this game! Lots of hours of content not only story wise, but also base building and ship decorating! Then if that's not enough, build a space station too! I love Terraria and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but for some reason I go back to this game just as often, if not more often. If you love Terraria I think you will love Starbound. One of my favorite games I've bought on Steam.
I love and hate this game. I used to play the pirated version. since I couldn't afford it until Steam made it impossible to download mods on the workshop back then. And honestly, the base game itself is pretty mid (not great but not that bad either). And yes, this game has already been abandoned, but not abandoned by the community. What truly makes this game good is the modding community and that's the only reason why most of us still play this game.
I love this game. It's basically Terarria, but in space. It's fun and challenging and it doesn't have a map, so it's a little different. Absolutely would recommend for anyone who likes Chucklefish games. I played on the easiest setting at first and am now in my Survival playthrough.
This is a hard one to review...
Starbound is a fantastic-looking sandbox game with interesting game mechanics not seen in Terraria, a game I have put well over 1000 hours into.
However, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend the game.
If Joe Public buys the game, it's most likely that he will be playing on a windows PC and will play vanilla - that is, without any mods.
This is something I noticed with several commenters in the review section and the forums, but the game is poorly optimized for Windows computers. I don't know how and I don't know why specifically Windows, I heard that it runs smoothly on MacOs and Linux. Even on my old Windows PC that can still run 2D games just fine, this one lags heavily when I enter a new area.
I have never seen this before with any game that isn't 3D. Even Minecraft doesn't lag (well until version 1.10 arrived, only then it began lagging) and it's a 3D game.
The said lag has incidentally managed to cause breaking bugs. For example, there is a NPC with a quest that is completely glitched because of the excessive lag, so not only is it annoying, but it is actually very bothersome. You might get away with it if you have a very beefy PC, but for most people Windows won't do.
As for the game itself, the base, unmodded experience, gets boring rather quickly. If you have no intention of installing mods, then you shouldn't play Starbound. Every planet is identical, with the only difference being the structures that spawn on them. On some they may spawn, but on others they won't, except for the "grassland" planet which acts as your starting location. Every single one of them have a teleporter and mines.
All in all, I enjoyed my experience with Starbound (when it didn't lag that is), but due to the amount of prerequisites for the game to be enjoyable to the average joe, I simply cannot recommend it. As far as I know, it hasn't gotten any good updates in a long time, so I doubt it gets any better.
As long as you are expecting what it is, this is a fun little game. It's not really a 2D version of No Man's Sky, but there are similarities. It's got great exploration and base-building, but there's more emphasis on quests and there's a definite progression through techs and materials. Also, unlike my experience of Terraria, it's completely playable with mouse and keyboard.
The vanilla game is somewhat limited and got a bit boring after 20 hours or so, but adding the massive Frackin' Universe mod enriches it immensely.
I used to play this game for hours and hours.
Too bad it never got a major update. You rush through the story and get best geear quickly. It feels dull sometimes and you don'T really need to build a base on the planets, since everything you need is on your ship.
I think this is a great game with UNLIMITED adventure! If you like terraria you will probably like this.
fun, was gonna be a big, important game, but the studio fucked everything up blowing it outta proportions. wouldnt recommend today, just go play terraria, the actual best survival/sandbox game of all time (where survival doesnt mean "eat or die" :D)
The game looks like terarria with metroid game mechanics, literary a indie masterpeace.
I weep for this game.
My first session was magical, as it showed a grand universe rich with exploration and potential lore. But now I outgrew its universe and seen the game's hollowness. Modding only band-aid fix the hollowness.
Again, I weep for this game because I LOVED it.
Starbound
Starbound is quite linear in terms of gameplay and story. Don't expect any differences if you play it a second time, but it is engaging and captivating.
The exploration of the planets is really good, the combat is not extraordinary, and the side missions are quite repetitive.
If it's a game to spend hours building bases or exploring planets, I definitely recommend it.
Note: This game itself isn't the best without mods, in many ways like a bethesda game. However, its got a massive host of mods that ultimately expand on it, some, such as frackin universe, are essential albeit a mixed bag, but in the end are worth it. The huge combination of planets you can find and mods that expand on that, the base building imo is actually cooler than terraria in a number of ways even(more furniture and decorations overall), and the expression players can put in is up there.
Great game in which mods make this game truely shine and feels complete.
this game is on god the shit
-all enemies want to kill you
-going through the storyline is boring asf
-surviving and not doing the story is boring asf
-doesnt welcome new players AT ALL
-have to use commands to fix ship thrusters
They shouldve ripped off terreia instead of making this diabolical shit
Disclaimer: The game was beaten twice, once just right now with a friend, and once like 3 years ago solo. Both times on non-Steam version, the first time was even with finishing some side content, so the amount of hours to be estimated at around 65h
92% of positive reviews fully cover why gaming industry is shitting itself
The game is an absolute mess of unfinished, boring, grindy, uninteresting and straight up frustrating game mechanics.
Pros:
Art is beautiful
Music is good
Good atmosphere
Cons:
Everything else:
Combat is stubborn and boring
Enemies are dumb and abusable
Mech has no purpose other than... well... idk tbh. You grind mech to more effectively grind mech. And the story is so short you don't even actually need anything above basic parts and cockpit lvl2
The story is just a big unfunny joke. You go scan a certain species, which is super grindy, because you must just tediously walk around in hopes to find them, then you kill a super boring and easy boss, rinse and repeat for each species, then you open final boss, which is, SOMEHOW, even more boring and tedious. That's all.
Side quest are either super boring, or super grindy and not really rewarding.
Hunger bar that kills you super fast if you don't eat, yet food items don't stack and can spoil.
No map, no death marker, super dark caves, and, a cherry on top, gravity acceleration that
instakills you if you fall from like 2 inches.
Oh, also, the default mode is "Survival" and you drop your items on death.
The gameplay loop in terms of engagement is comparable to, idk, Tetris? Pong? But Pong is at least competitive lol. As well as Tetris.
So, overall, a solid 4/10.
5 for art, music and environment.
0 for gameplay.
-1 for super dumb awkwardly stitched mechanics.
For clarity, this is a soft not recommended. I don't hate the game, but it never actually caught my attention. "But but but, PLAYTIME!!!" A lot of my play-time was spent building admittedly and once I had built what I wanted I found the rest of the game lacking.
The good first:
- This is a pretty decent survival craft game with pretty good art.
- Exploration is fun enough and there's a big universe with random generation to keep things fresh for a little bit.
- Building can also be very simple or very creative depending on the effort you wish to apply.
- Lastly, there's a pretty big mod library and it's not hard to mod yourself with just a couple guides.
The bad:
- Despite the random generation, you start finding patterns in the generation rather quickly. Sure, there's a ton of micro-biomes, but there's a ton of repetition in quests and biomes as well. Find a new civilization? Welp, they're gonna have the exact same quests as the last civilization and only a limited amount of new furniture that you can actually use from them.
- Advancing will only be a challenge in your first play through without mods. Nothing is really explained, but once you get it there's a TON you can just skip over. I get every survival craft is like this to a point, but this you could probably go from starting to best gear in less than 2 hours.
- The main story line is one giant repeating quest for the majority of it. Seek this race, study this race, do special quest, rinse repeat multiple times. The few parts that weren't repetition weren't ground breaking either and cinematics are completely boring and unskippable.
- The food system is also very unbalanced. There's recipes out there that even when streamlined will take quite some time to create, but they give very few extra benefits or added price from recipes you can throw together in seconds giving no real motivation to even try to craft better. Admittedly a lot of the crafting system suffers the same, but food was by far the worst. [*]Lastly, as this is a survival/craft game you'll almost inevitably end up needing a guide at some point. While the guides are out there, there's a ton of controversy and drama surrounding this game that you'll need to sift through to find them. Even without having a side or stance on most of the drama, as I'm playing this well after most of it is concluded, it inevitably leaves a bad taste when I'm just trying to find information. There's a good community for this game, but you gotta search to find them.
TL:DR
This is decent at all the Survival/Craft stuff, but isn't exceptional in any way compared to the masterpieces of it's genre like Terraria or No Man's Sky.
Maybe this game for you, but it just doesn't click for me like Terraria does.
I've tried playing vanilla, I've played with Frackin Universe, and I've played with a friend.
I see there is a lot of content to be had, bases to be built, bosses to fight, planets to explore, but the experience is a bit clunky all around and I don't know what I'm doing. You beam down on your first planet, explore a bit, find a portal device, get the gems to open it, and the game dumps like 10 different shops and kiosks on you while you still are using the default gear and don't know how to craft much of anything. All the while, you have a awkward inventory that forcefully separates all your items by tabs, a awkward hotbar with your mining tools locked to it separating the left and right sides, and awkward combat mechanics with a massive starter sword. Many other frustrations exist, like why aren't the crafting ingredients for recipes automatically displayed in the crafting UI? Why can't I move my matter manipulator's functions on the hotbar? Why do all my items have to be separated into tabs, making me click on all of them just to see what I have? Why are the popup messages from the ship so small when you pick up a important item, and why can't the message just be condensed in the item's hover description?
The Frackin Universe mod only compounded these problems by adding a huge tech tree you have to unlock recipies with, among the several other menu options it gives you. I would not recommend it to a new player unless you love having all these menus being dumped on you.
I want to like Starbound. It looks so cool being able to build bases, explore planets for structures and resources, and customize a spaceship, but the clunky UI and steep learning curve really ruins the experience for me. Maybe I'll eventually understand it if I feel compelled to push through, but I think I'll just go back to Terraria.
i recommend this game to you because it is a super fun sandbox and if you do /admin it makes it so you can not die and you dont need resoreses to craft items and if you do /spawnitem {itemid} you can spawn items
and this is a super fun game soo you shold play it
What an amazing Game buy it or miss out on one of the funnest experiences you'll ever have
For me This game has a similar appeal to Minecraft and while being a game if it's own with character customization and a universe to explore. this game is fun without mods and even better with them. It's a shame I hadn't heard of it till I started playing.
Fun but can become quite tedious particularly where crafting is concerned, need to craft x? well you need y, need y? well it's on this particular planet, land on planet - unable to survive unless you have an entirely different item, want to craft that item? Well you need z - so on and so forth I may as well be finding chores to do around the house.
Criminally under rated game. Starbound has a very unique graphical style, and some nice customizable characters. I happen to enjoy the building mechanics quite a bit, and the story is simple to get a hold of. The game is a little complicated at times, with grinding to get things being quite necessary, because of the almost Impossible to get ores. Basically, if you wanted a mashup of Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and Terraria, then you got it! Good job, you. You found the game. Overall, I rate it 7 out of 10. (Docking points for grinding)
I can't really pinpoint what it is, but something about Starbound really just doesn't click with me. Maybe it's how clunky combat feels when mixed with the movement and just the physics in general. I don't find myself coming back to this, ever. It just feels like a clunkier version of Terraria to me.
It`s hard to rate this game. The base one is sh*t - it`s just another Terraria-like survival game with a ton of wasted potential. But with mods... My God, mods make it into one of the best games of this kind! Dozens of planet types, realistic weapons, RPG system, damn magic and (cool thing for Destiny fans like me) all exotics from D1\2 with their respective abilities? And that`s just a few of the cool things!
I really wanted to like this game, but I genuinely can't recommend it. It's great conceptually. I love the building, the free exploration, the ability to meet new people and stuff. I love the loot.
What I don't like is how I have to be constantly in the browser, how fueling the mech is such a pain and starship fuel is still an unknown. Basic information that a character in-game would know is withheld for no reason. The tutorial is somewhat useful, but spends more time teaching useless stuff than it does the useful.
For some reason, Starbound did not click with me in the same way Terraria did. I think that it's due to the fact that you move between planets, and as such, cannot progress and build as much in a specific one.
Starbound is the most satisfying game so far. If you play solo, it's a great survival game which keeps you always interested with different planets, mobs, items and quests.
If you play multiplayer, it's a great potential to have star wars, stories, battles and more other multiplayer features. There's no choice between to buy or not to buy this game. It's a must-have.
While the game is fun I can't recommend it in good conscience because it's a) abandonware and b) was built on the back of work that was not fairly compensated.
I really like the marketing, style and stuff but in reality crashes a lot, corrupt saves and not enjoyable. I feel scammed.
This is a version of terraria in a way, but it is also just its own game. With its own story and difficulty, and i find it extremely enjoyable
This was a really fun game. I really liked the gameplay and enjoyed the storyline for the most part.
One con: it seemed to drag on a little too long. I would have preferred a more concise game (or one that emphasized base-building as a side-component to the game, rather than a mostly skippable part of the game). This was particularly true when trying to get actuators for the mech (which, as a side note, I highly recommend the mod that lets you craft them instead of endless space battles)
Terrible story line, frustrating combat, weird movement that can get you killed at any moment, etc. I do not recommend at all.
No Man's Sky x Terraria, except also an AU where the NMS devs never fixed the game and did shady stuff and the community had to fix everything with mods.
Still as fun and addicting as NMS though. Recommended, but buy it on sale.
And if you don't like it after 12 hours of play, even after installing mods to fix annoyances, try the Fracking Universe mod-set before giving up on it.
Definitely more playable and more moddable than Starfield. And more stable, too. So if it is on discount, what have you got to lose?
Sure the graphics don't look like much. And there's a crowd of basement-dwelling mouthbreathers bawling, "But TERRARIA!" (in truth this game has better graphics)
And the story's a bit of Anglojank but if you want a cosy, comfy experience that is light on combat, low on fanon woo, but high on building, exploration and de-stressing (think Townscaper but with 2d graphics and some combat/aggressive play) consider giving this game a shot.
The number of user-submitted mods, submods and uber-1337 mods too allow for an experience so modular and customiseable (what with the near laughable ability to mod in items into this game) is what makes this game addictive. Different mods and difficulty mods make this game almost nearly indispensible.
And while you're at it, try mine mmkay? ;)
Having played since early early access, I can say that I think some missteps were made in the development of this game; I don't think think this is the BEST version we could have gotten.
That said, it is still one of the best in its genre. Can't recommend it enough if you're interested in side-scrolling survival sandbox type things.
