A game that guides you with quests, storyline and systems and mechanics and whatnot, but feels incredibly aimless at the same time.
This is a great game, but deeply flawed. That may seem paridoxical, but I shall explain.
Starbound, at its core, is Terraria in space, with a lot more guns, a lot of races to play as, and whole universe of procedural generation. Its a very good concept, and the game has amazing moments of awe, where you just stop and go "Wow." Its the most fun when you are just working your land, carving a little nest of your own in the large and unforgiving universe. It can be cozy, it can be exhilirating, it can be sad. Its got amazing bones, a mix of great soundtrack, great art, and awesome atmosphere.
But its just mediocre.
To explain, while the game does a lot good, its just a mess. Tons of features are incomplete or broken, many mistakes and bugs in basically every single feature ingame, and a story that at best is boring, and at worst detracts from the experience. Its so good, but its *so bad.*
I think I'll elaborate by explaining one of the main detractors from the experience: The Story. In isolation, the summary of the story is fine. It ticks a lot of the boxes for a "cosmic savior" trope. and generally doesn't sound super boring. In practice, the quests are annoying to complete due to the procedural generation sometimes just screwing you over by refusing to spawn structures necessary to complete the quests, and the dungeons are often clunky, confusing, and a rollercoaster of difficulty that ranges from "You can sit still and win" to "You can have maxed gear and it won't matter because the boss 2 shots you and its minions easily outpace your healing." The dungeons also don't allowing building. In a Sandbox game. You cannot make your own arena to fight any of the bosses. Its a frankly baffling decision, which is one of the biggest reasons for me, that the game doesn't surpass terraria or even minecraft in terms of bosses and story. Its *really* bad, and an addition that was completely unnecessary. The betas completely lacked a story until the very end, and from all the players I talked to at the time, the game was all the better for it. It put the focus on the player and their own little section of space. It also had a lot more unique QoL and general changes that most players agree was better.
Honestly, I would put this game in the ranks with minecraft. Games that *Can* be fun without mods, but you truly unlock a lot of the experience and fun with the game after adding a lot of mods that both fix existing issues and add new things. If Steam had a "Mediocre" rating, I would give it here.
Fun game with lots of things to see and do. Even after the main quest line has been completed there are plenty of mods that add more depth and fun to the game.
ahh yes tis great. especially when you download a mod that lets you use panzers.
Still mt favorite game after all these years of no updates, modding community really keeps this game going but they're all AMAZING mods
This game is easy but hard at the same time. Do /admin to become invincable. If you want to do suurvival but dont want the burden of eating and retrieving items, then chose casual mode when you create an character.
on the surface of it, its practically just Terraria, but bad.
currently, as of only 75 hours of playtime, i havent gotten below it, i havent dug any deeper then that, but i am sure that theres something More below this upper crust of "terraria but bad".
6.5/10
It's not terraria. It's not even close. the *only* similarity is the fact its a pixel art sidescroller. also, awesome game, would recommend.
Starbound is a sandbox adventure that feels like stepping into an infinite universe of possibilities. Developed by Chucklefish and released in 2016, this 2D procedurally generated space-exploration game combines the best elements of crafting, combat, and storytelling. With its pixel-art charm and vast worlds to explore, Starbound offers a galactic playground where your imagination is the only limit.
Whether you’re scavenging resources on an alien planet, building the home (or fortress) of your dreams, or unraveling the mysteries of ancient civilizations, Starbound is a game that invites you to make your own adventure.
Graphics and Style
Starbound’s pixel-art style is a visual treat, balancing retro charm with stunning detail. Every planet feels unique, thanks to the vibrant biomes, diverse flora and fauna, and atmospheric lighting effects. From lush forest worlds to scorching volcanic surfaces, each environment is lovingly crafted, making exploration a constant delight.
The character designs are equally delightful, with customizable avatars that represent a variety of species, each with its own lore and aesthetic flair. The art direction perfectly complements the game’s whimsical yet mysterious tone.
Gameplay and Mechanics
At its core, Starbound is about exploration and creativity. You’ll journey through a procedurally generated universe, hopping between planets to gather resources, discover secrets, and expand your capabilities. The freedom to play your way is Starbound’s greatest strength.
Exploration
Each planet is a new adventure, offering unique challenges, treasures, and environments. Some worlds are teeming with life, while others are desolate, yet rich in minerals and ancient ruins. The thrill of landing on an uncharted planet and wondering what lies beneath the surface never gets old.
Crafting and Building
The crafting system is deep and rewarding, allowing you to create tools, weapons, furniture, and more. Building your base — whether it’s a cozy cabin, an elaborate space station, or an underground laboratory — is incredibly satisfying. The game provides a wealth of materials and decorative items to make your creations feel truly your own.
Combat and Quests
Combat in Starbound is action-packed, with a variety of weapons ranging from melee swords to high-tech laser guns. Enemies are as varied as the planets themselves, from hostile wildlife to robotic guardians. The addition of randomly generated dungeons and missions adds a structured layer to the otherwise freeform gameplay.
The main storyline provides a compelling narrative backdrop to your galactic adventures, weaving together themes of discovery and ancient mysteries. However, the game shines brightest when you stray from the main path to create your own stories.
Multiplayer
Playing Starbound with friends elevates the experience to a whole new level. Whether you’re building a shared base, coordinating planet raids, or simply exploring together, the cooperative gameplay makes the universe feel even more alive. The ability to work on massive projects as a group or embark on spacefaring adventures with a crew is endlessly fun.
Sound and Music
The soundtrack is nothing short of phenomenal. Curtis Schweitzer’s compositions are a perfect blend of serene and adventurous, capturing the wonder of exploring the cosmos. The ambient sounds of planets — from rustling leaves to distant alien roars — immerse you further into the game’s universe.
Replayability
With its procedurally generated worlds and countless ways to play, Starbound offers near-infinite replayability. Each playthrough can focus on different aspects, from building and farming to combat and exploration. Mods from the community add even more content, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
Drawbacks
While Starbound is an incredible experience, it’s not without its flaws. Some players may find the progression system grindy, especially when gathering specific resources. The procedural generation, while impressive, occasionally leads to repetitive environments. Additionally, the main story can feel secondary to the sandbox elements, which might not appeal to players looking for a tightly focused narrative.
Conclusion
Starbound is a love letter to exploration and creativity, offering a vast and vibrant universe that’s as fun to play as it is to simply exist in. It’s a game that rewards curiosity, whether you’re delving deep into the lore of alien civilizations, building the starbase of your dreams, or simply marveling at the diversity of the cosmos.
For fans of sandbox games, crafting, or interstellar adventure, Starbound is a must-play experience that invites you to forge your own path among the stars. Its charm, depth, and boundless opportunities for discovery make it a true standout in the genre.
Rating: 9.5/10
though the dev team did some shady shit in development, it's a cool game. the now entirely community driven sandbox planet hopper makes for an alright time killer, though only if modded at this point. the vanilla game feels quite bland, and i wish there would've been more added under a team that actually paid their workers, especially the underage ones.
it is very fun to blow through the intro by going out of your way to fully upgrade your gear before even entering the Floran caverns.
I know chuckle fish devs are like terribly underpaid among other things but this game is still good for what they could pump out and I honestly love it without mods you should give it a try. it is upsetting it could have been better then it already is because somethings do become tedious when they should stay fresh and cool but its good overall and you can make the best out of it.
It's fun. If you play with mods, you have more to do.
I played Starbound several times over the past few years but I never got past the library mission during those runs, but after sitting down and actually putting time into this game recently I made it further than I ever have before. And I must say that this game is on the same level as Terraria, it isnt just a clone. Starbound is so insanely cozy and such a super cute game, with a very fun storyline. Traveling the stars really gets the imagination going. LOVE LOVE LOVE this game!
its a nice and relaxing game you can build your own colony or just make your own place but i think there should be more bosses and harder enemies (but i doubt it)
🌟 Rating: 8.5/10 🌟
Fun adventures and discovery in the game, but it lacks diversity when spawning into the same type of planet which is floran. I wish we could spawn into more random planets when first entering the world. But overall, really fun open world adventure survival game!
Fun with endless creative possibilities in this universe, but can be long winded at times.
Definitely for long haul gamers.
I would have recommended this game in late 2016. But now, even with a much better computer, I can't. I've spent the last three hours trying to find a workaround for all the stutters and lag spikes and I'm just... tired.
Unfortunately found the game pretty boring, the planets feel like the same but in a different font. The combat doesn't feel great even with weapons that in theory should be very cool. There is a huge amount of cosmetics but no good way to sort through it and it makes storage a nightmare.
All in all pretty disappointed since I thought I could sink 100hrs easy but I ended up having to force myself to continue playing.
this game is a mess. i want to give it a good review because it has some good ideas and the community is carrying it with mods, but otherwise the game is so mind numbingly boring that i cant even put it into words. progression is based off of finding randomly generated structures, hoping you find enough decorations to scan, then beating an occasionally fun dungeon. is your solution to that is taking more time to explore and gather resources? as it turns out, none of the progression is actually based around weapon/item upgrades, nor does it lock any sort of crazy powercreep, meaning that if you take your time to try and enjoy the game, the next few dungeons become mindless clicking as you mow down everything.
the only reason to play this is if youre the type to get mods and play a buggy porn game with friends. otherwise just buy terraria
starbound so good. i do not care if other people dislike this game or say the story is boring the story is FUN. have FUN. play starbound, make a creature, go to funny planet. starbound GOOD
Its good but the story is not really that great but the game itself it good.
Great game, especially with mods. Without mods you won't be able to get an error like this: [13:09:27.385] [Error] Could not load image asset '/objects/crafting/nmm_thecraftingthing/whatthefuck.png:right.lit.default', using placeholder default.
This game may seem like a space Terraria clone, but this game isn't exactly like that. This game has an actual storyline as you progress through the game. While a bit unoptimized for lower-end PCs, this game is fun while progressing. The only downside to this game is that once you reach the end-game, the game gets pretty meaningless. I would still recommend the game nonetheless despite some of its flaws.
Alot like Terraria, but a bit more fun. Really love just travelling the universe and running into random stuff.
way to complicated, missed simple tutorial, really wanted to chillout cause it has its vibes, instead i was wandering without any aim, everything was slow, found tons of items i had no clue about, and then something killed me. frustrated and sad
Play with mods like frackin universe. but it takes SO MANY times to figure out as a newbie ONLY because of the mod
this game is so calming and endlessly fun thanks in no small part to the modding community. this game will always hold a special place in my heart. other kids had minekraft I had starbound.
Really fun co-op game. The Starbound progression loop and investment felt much better to me than Terraria + Calamity, bosses and enemies being much better in Terraria. The base game performance is horrific, borderline unplayable. Pretty sure it is limited to 1 CPU core without utilizing the GPU at all. I suggest using OpenStarbound on github instead as it fixed all the problems I was having.
The modding scene is pretty bad for Starbound, much worse than Terraria. Mods are often outdated/abandoned or need 3+ patches released by different modders to halfway function. I made a curated collection of core mods I've used for OpenStarbound:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3356847574
VERY GOOD GAME. I would recomend getting this over Terraria but I haven't played much of terraria just yet.
fyi its basically space terraria.
it's fucking WHACK how they cut like 80% of the character and interesting differences between races and lots more interesting stuff from when it was in early access????? so now you have this super fucking ANNOYING generic long storyline every time.
This game is like the potential energy of video games. It's got so many different mechanics that, with some refinement and work, could be fantastic. The archaeology system, the weapon variety, the planetary biomes, the variety of blocks and decorations, the massive amount of different trees and storage -- everything about this game, really, screams that it could be wonderful.
However, at every turn it falls flat. It's like the game went through playtesting, got released, and then abandoned. It's quite sad, and if you know anything about the history of the developers and the development of this game, quite unfortunate. I recommend this game if you can get it in a sale or a bundle. It's a game that's worth playing through, but only just. I had to restart it many times as friends beat it without me or we gave up on it, otherwise the game would have about 120 less hours in it. The end game content just doesn't feel worth it to me for me to keep playing it past beating the final boss, so that's where it will likely stay for the foreseeable future.
After the first few hours everything starts to repeat, large sections of the game are identical.
I'm taking a break, I've been grinding the near identical quests for hours.
This game is lacking a lot of necessary management tools like sorting chests, stacking to chest from inventory, labelling chests, crafting from chest inventory.
Play Terraria instead.
Basically space-Terraria. I haven't played without mods in years so keep that in mind with this review. Lots of stuff to do. Do quests, play the story-mode, be a landlord, Become a space adventurer with a crew, etc. Definitely an improved experience with mods.
a game u always come back to even more then terraria or runescape. while if logged far more hours in minecraft this game and its modding community really output high value
Wilx100% (Sep 15, 2024) - This is one of my childhood games, I remember when I had the bootlegged version on my sh***y computer and played it for days. Basically its Terraria but in space, has a load of mods that you can download to make your experience even better, there's mechs, guns, wands, skills, bosses, even has a story. It's a decent game overall. I would rate this a 6.8/10.
Cool game with own storyline, look like other game terraria but different mechanics and graphic. Cool game
This game reminds me of Terraria but with space exploration! It is actually a lot of fun, there are even custom races if you take a quick glance at the mod page. I chose a Novali - a mixture of an Avali and Nova Kid. Go check out the Avali race on the workshop page - they're adorable.
Moving on from that, the game-play is unique and simple compared to most games. Some of the buildings are also just majestic - and the ships? Delicious (figurative for: Amazing). PLEASE get it if you like Space and Terraria in general!
I really enjoy the game.
Devs gave up on it but the mods keep it alive, and they are awesome.
I would recommend this game simply due to mods, however without them this game is kinda not that great for many reasons, mostly due to Chuckle Fish abandoning the game
Also please get OpenStarbound, it makes the game so much better
the game is fun and really good for playing with friends however the bosses are a little hard to kill early game and the multiplayer could you some refineing i got a few fatal error crashes when in multiplayer other than that amazing game.
it is fun... a little frustrating if you are not good at combat or just starting out.
What do I write to do this game proper credit? This game is so good your girlfriend might actually play it with you. This 2D side scroller has an entire galaxy to explore, vehicles to pilot, companions to meet, businesses to run, resources to collect, monsters to capture, planets to conquer, organizations to join and a spaceship to upgrade. You could build a house, a farm, a city or entire empires. This is a sandbox Metroid + Harvest Moon game if you can imagine that.
amazing with mods, however devs abandoned it. honestly only play it for the mods
It is fun. It is decently priced. However, the devs didn't keep to what they promised. This game had so much more potential. It was the Terraria 2.0. It was meant to be. But the devs abandoned the game. A beautiful idea, half baked into this. I wish the devs kept to what they promised.
I do recommend this game for others. Simply enough, it's worth the price for the concept and flexibility for mods. I generally play on the Frakin' Universe mod, likely for the majority of my time. It's complex, but you can get a handle on it easily enough. I will admit, however, the base game is pretty dull, which is why I play FU in the first place.
It's pretty good. It's like terraria but you can travel in space, generally better graphics and... multiple races. I would like to see more planet diversity however and more... interactions. Perhaps you would not know everything about a planet and would have to scan it with your ship, or perhaps you can land your ship on a planet and even ride it around there, that would certainly be fun. Perhaps ship combat? Would be very cool, automated resource management by the crew by giving them tasks, what im saying is that the game could use way more content! That's the only downside it has. It's a really good game and i wish it had more.
I definitely recommend this game if one enjoys 2-D, sidescrolling survival-craft (similar but not the same as Terraria), and sci-fi space exploration. While vanilla should be played through to grasp the basic mechanics, the modding scene is where the game really shines.
Explore new planets, biomes, vast lore and quests (and additional content with new mechanics). One can hire crew, build a settlement on any planet, build their ship in any way they like (using something like the BYOS system in FU, for example). I put together a collection called A Modicum of Universal Intrigue and Complexity that I have tested extensively for stability and errors and is what I use in my play-throughs now. There is a constant progression that unlocks more quests and content as the player advances and it is such a treat.
I love this game! Lots of hours of content not only story wise, but also base building and ship decorating! Then if that's not enough, build a space station too! I love Terraria and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but for some reason I go back to this game just as often, if not more often. If you love Terraria I think you will love Starbound. One of my favorite games I've bought on Steam.
I love and hate this game. I used to play the pirated version. since I couldn't afford it until Steam made it impossible to download mods on the workshop back then. And honestly, the base game itself is pretty mid (not great but not that bad either). And yes, this game has already been abandoned, but not abandoned by the community. What truly makes this game good is the modding community and that's the only reason why most of us still play this game.
