About the Game

In Starbound, you create your own story - there’s no wrong way to play! You may choose to save the universe from the forces that destroyed your home, uncovering greater galactic mysteries in the process, or you may wish to forego a heroic journey entirely in favor of colonizing uncharted planets.

Settle down and farm the land, become an intergalactic landlord, hop from planet to planet collecting rare creatures, or delve into dangerous dungeons and lay claim to extraordinary treasures.
Discover ancient temples and modern metropolises, trees with eyes, and mischievous penguins. Make use of hundreds of materials and over two thousand objects to build a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, a medieval castle, underwater arcade, or even a space station.

Starbound has been built from the ground up to be multiplayer and easily moddable. You have the tools to make the universe your own and modify the game to suit your play style - add new items, races, planet types, dungeons, and quests - the possibilities are limitless.

- Choose from one of 7 playable races and customize your character
- Save the universe in an epic story campaign featuring colorful characters, bosses, dungeons, and quests!
- You're the captain of your very own starship! Decorate it, expand it, and use it to explore a procedurally generated universe
- Colonize uncharted planets and collect gifts from your tenants - if they like you, they may even ask to join your ship crew!
- Three game modes - Casual (no need to eat), Survival (eat to survive/drop items on death) and Hardcore (permadeath)
- Craft thousands of objects - building materials, armor, weapons, furniture and more
- Capture unique monsters to fight alongside you
- All content is available in online drop-in/drop-out co-op
- Built from the ground up to be easily moddable. You have the tools to make the universe however you'd like it

Its better then Terraria on my opinion.
The game just need some mods to be interesting and playable.
Also friends, you need them for sure or you will be bored, trust my words.
This game is the absolute KING of cheap, unfair deaths. Fall damage is OP and enemies are arbitrarily powerful. Strongly recommend Keep Items On Death and Keep Pixels On Death mods. The game is an unfair grinding slog without them, but with them the game is greatly enjoyable.
Least fun version of terraria, but good nontheless
its kinda like playing minecraft for the first time and you have to figure everything out. its such a cute game
Im only a few hours in but this is totally worth it for the price. I hope the different races offer unique abilities and reasons to play as them aside from the different sprites but so far liking this game to kill time at night when I dont want to do my other hobbies.
I hate the story but the community develop a "Skip the story" I love this mod so if you want to skip the story download this mod and SKIP ALREADY, I hate so much the story and the first mission!
not a terraria clone at all. i was thinking like that at first too but it's really not even close. it sets itself to be so different and unique, it is literally a whole nother game, and it's so peak too.
An absolute gem of a game! Starbound is like Terraria meets No Man's Sky, blending deep exploration, crafting, and adventure across countless unique planets. Whether you're building a cozy colony, delving into ancient ruins, or just customizing your spaceship, there's always something new to discover.
The pixel art is charming, the soundtrack is atmospheric, and the freedom to explore at your own pace makes every session feel fresh. If you love space, creativity, and endless possibilities, this game is for you!
mods, mods, and more mods.
Very half-assed. The story is unbelievably boring and the novelty of procedurally generated planets doesn't really awe you if you ever played in another procedurally generated world and know how shallow they are.
I dig this game! Literally. I struggle with the controls, I can't get past the ship repair mission because the enemies keep murdering me. So I just went to the first planet, started digging down into the lava core, back up to the surface, and realized my tunnel loops around the planet. I got enough tar sands and gold in my inventory to retire on a nice warm planet, drinking cocktails all day long. I guess I win.
it is a fun game even better with the abundant amount of mods this game has.
Lots of fun to be had and many things to do. Many hours of playability. Defenitly worth the money and the time.

I loved the concept for this game when I first bought it, but that was before any story existed in the game. But coming back to it this many years later, I almost wish I never bought it. There is 'some' fun to be had, but there's more disappointment than joy it seems.
- useful gear has been removed from the game, rather than being adjusted so it's not OP.
- Incredibly repetitive quests/chores.
- Upgrading gear doesn't feel worth the effort
- No way to store currency until later in game, and it's expensive
- Dying is way too easy, especially early on.
- The game has been abandoned, Apparently, and I don't see improvements happening?.
I'll keep playing for now, but i can see it ending up in the pile of 'sad dusty code'.
fun exploration with a bit of challenge as well as a good story
It's hard to get into at first, but eventually you get used to it. Expect to die a lot. I hope they add something to make organization more label-able, but I really enjoy picking a time to go to my storage base and organize things. I feel like I have a reason to either have a friend or a ship mate around on missions instead of other games where they can either get in the way(npc's in other games). Really feel like the ship mates are easier to manage than most followers in games. I love the effects and abilities of the extremely vast amount of weaponry in the game. I will usually have multiple weapons in my hotbar. The mechs and space missions. All in all worth the money.
came for the goated early access, stayed for the excellent modders that salvaged and continue to salvage chucklefish's impressive streak of continual fuckups on this game
Love the modding scene, people really went crazy there. The lore in of itself is...alright. Not sure it's something I would have put in a sandbox, but what's done is done there. Another thing I adore? The options of tech. Mod techs aside, there's a neat little selection that one can choose. (no spoilers there, haha. i really think it's that good)
Love this game. Have played off and on since early access, and it means a lot to me. This game accomplishes everything that Bethesda's Starfield attempted to do in 2023, with an infinite universe full of planets for you to explore, except these planets have areas of interest and stuff for you to do. The main game gets sort of lackluster towards the end, so if you find yourself becoming bored with the gameplay loop, I recommend downloading Frackin' Universe, a modpack that completely reworks almost every system in the game, rewarding you for colonization and agriculture, as well as slowing down progression so that it feels more rewarding. Personally, this game hits almost every mark. The world and setting is full of heart and soul, the building and crafting never gets old, and there's always something else hiding around every corner.
Optimization has gotten worse, it lags in co-op.
Yes, it's not as timeless as Terraria, and doesn't share much of the same feeling of progression. But Starbound is a real planet faring adventure, even more so with mods such as Frackin' Universe. Where Terraria has you on one world with many biomes, Starbound makes you understand that different worlds have different biomes and different materials, which makes progression revolve around exploring the various worlds there are. The mechs are fun, the species are fun and all in all the ambience of the game is fantastic. If you liked Terraria, you will probably like this.
Now onto something a little less positive: Progression in vanilla is very, very broken. Jumps all cost the same amount of fuel no matter what the distance is, so you can go to a super high danger planet, gather materials over the course of several deaths, and immediately have access to some of the most powerful equipment from the get go. So, if you're not into that kind of easy going gameplay, or you don't plan on doing it, please play with the Frackin' Universe mod. It's complicated, yes, but there are many guides and a very helpful wiki online to help.
I recommend this game only because you can mod it to make it a smoother, better and less boring experience than the one the developers created.
This game was pretty cool at first. I like the exploring, mining and building. But the game doesn't really explain how you do anything and imo has some severe techincal limitations. For example, I started a dedicated server with a friend who ended up in a completely different solar system from where i started. I could still beam to them which worked but then I couldn't get back to the house we built with all of our stuff unless they were logged on or I built a flag to bookmark it.
So I built the flag. Cool, problem solved. Then I moved the flag to the upstairs of the house. Figured i'd have to recreate the bookmark, which I did. Got killed by a monster (you die A LOT in this game mostly due to being forced onto a keyboard or play with TERRIBLE controller support). Back on the ship, I noticed there were now two bookmarks for the house. I deleted one and teleported to the remaining one. I respawned on the ship and now both bookmarks are gone. No way to get to the house unless my friend is on. No feul to fly to their system. Not good enough gear yet to get fuel. So, I have to start from scratch or wait for them to logon. 1/10. Garbage.
Funny survival, with plenty of modding options. Enough said.
Starbound was a game I bought after I had played Terraria. I wanted to play No Man's Sky but did not want to buy it on Steam. So, one day I searched for a game that is like it and found Starbound. The game has many places to go and many possibilities.
My friends and I enjoy this simple little game, it has a large mod base to it and while not overly complicated, is hours of fun if you like to build. [I am an avid builder and will play just about any game with building mechanics in it.]
Made some good memories with this game. I highly recommend to do the first playthroughs without mods, but downloading one or two is absolutely inevitable beacuse of the lack of content towards endgame. The game is super easy, the main quest only takes bout 2 focused hours maximum. I like the idea of a fully playable universe but there is just not enough content to fill it. It had a lot of wasted potential, and thats why im sure that every copy of this game becomes a modded mess after the first 100 hours or so
Really fun game, beat it on Casual. Wasn't a fan of Survival but that's probably just a skill issue
Game is space terraria essentially, it isn't optimized and there are memory leaks from certain things like the pixel printer.
That being said, there's some mods to correct a few of those bugs as best possible.
I'd suggest not getting into the Frackin Universe overhaul, it changes way too much and adds a number of complicated (to lengthen the game and increase the grind) systems to the crafting and building parts of the game. At least not getting into it for a long while.
There's rumours of a console port of Starbound at some point in the future, and a number of those bugs and memory leaks would need to be patched before that.
As for mods you should really consider, even on a first playthrough: Frackin Universe + A.V.I.A.N. That whacky computer just adds so much personality to the game.
Not quite as flexible as other craft-mine-build games like Terraria, but still enjoyable and fun to explore to generated worlds.
I'm a little disappointed that there aren't many more ways to enhance your character's abilities beyond just weapons, armor, and the environment pack. Mitigating fall damage, lava/poison damage, or just flat out increasing health would be appreciated to take the edge of trickier areas. It's easy to accept this as all part of the game though, and maybe it's nice that the challenges stay challenging even as you explore more and more dangerous places.
Fun for a playthrough or two. It has so much potential, but I feel like it just barely misses the mark on a lot of things.
the story isnt the strongest but this scratches the exploration itch like nothing else. 80 hours into the game and i found a new biome. it's really fun. the music is great too--ive yet to make any colonies but i'm having fun without them. definitely a learning curve when you first start, though.
Fun game if you have a craving for the baby of Terraria and No Mans Sky. I'm running on an old 2016 hp laptop that was 300 bucks so it lags a bit sometimes even with the massive upgrade to 8gb ram. But it's playable enough that I put 200 hours into it.
I'm pretty casual, still enjoy it.
Good game, freedom of decision, interesting game environement. Interesting posibilities.
Infinite replayability. Infinite mods. Infinite worlds and planets. What more could you want?
I have played this game for hours already and theres so much to do alittle overwhelming at first but I enjoy it alot as theres so much to explore
Honestly? This is one of the BEST indie games of all time!
Granted, it could use work, but that's where mod support comes in!
With the support of things such as spawning NPCs including shopkeepers and guards to move into planet colonies you build, and being able to build tech for defenses and such, it's just a masterpiece that succeeds in putting the base game of "Terraria" to shame!
In addition? You got mech combat, and being able to travel to many different planets; making this even more in depth, compared to "Terraria", despite being VERY similar! (Not to mention more beginner friendly, too! And better controls, to top it off)
Fun 2d space game, the more you play the more there is to find and do
10/10 game especially for stardew fanatics like me. So much lore and also a very vast sandbox universe. Obsessed
While the base game is somewhat lacking in a few areas and customization is a bit left behind, the modding scene for this game makes up for it and helps the game feel alot more alive. Depending on what you install you can make the game: Cutesy, Tactical, Meme-ified, Realistic, Roleplay based, Challenging and of course as most games would make it, Perverted (Up to your choice of course, especially since you'd need to go to a third party platform to download "those" mods). Overall I recommend this game no matter what type of player you are but you would need to mod it out to get alot of your worth and preference into it. 9/10
I came for the artstyle and aesthetic, was kept busy by the hours of content, and ended up staying for the great modding community.
The only unfortunate thing is the lack of updates and new content. It seems that this game has reached the end of its development, and is currently in its final state.
Oh well! Not every game can live up to minecraft or terraria, and that's fine.
They ruined it. They gave up a interesting, open ended universe for a haphazardly thrown together sci-fi story and an endlessly repeating scan-walk-scan gameplay loop. It's only decent with mods and even then Terraria is a better investment of your time
I played Starbound years ago upon its initial release and nowadays have mixed feelings. On one hand it's a cool exploration /base build / survival game. You get to visit different planets and fight enemies, gather resources, do quests, find items etc. On the other, I rarely picked it up during a playthrough after visiting a few planets because things got a bit stale. The devs will never update the game, but they've already crafted a very enjoyable game. I'd like to forget about playing it and replay it again.
Great game with plenty of potential! It is super not optimized how ever. If my wife and I explore a medium sized planet together, the game becomes unplayable. The lag and desync makes fighting even the weakest monster a challenge.
I kinda like this game.
By a WHOLE LOT.
But it *must* be modded.
Unfortunately the base game fell short and with it having been entirely abandoned it never was able to live up to what so many, including me, wished it could have truly been. A world where this got the same support Terraria has gotten would be a dream like you wouldn’t believe.
So I will thumbs up this game even after all these years. Even with the need of mods and knowing that it has certain performance issues that are engine deep and likely will never be fixed unless a overhaul happens from the the ground up. Official or not.
Playing Starbound felt like stepping into an endless universe of possibilities. At first, the game’s charming pixel art and vast procedural galaxy completely captivated me. I loved hopping from planet to planet, never knowing what kind of environment, creatures, or treasures I might encounter. The exploration was addictive, and the ability to shape and build my own bases gave me a real sense of ownership over my journey. The sci-fi aesthetic mixed with whimsical humor made the game feel unique, and the range of biomes and planets kept me curious about what else I might discover.
That said, after a while, the gameplay loop started to feel a bit repetitive. The procedural generation, while impressive, sometimes resulted in planets that felt more generic than distinct, and the quests often boiled down to fetch missions that lacked depth. The combat was serviceable, but it didn’t feel particularly tight or rewarding, and it sometimes got in the way of the exploration I enjoyed so much. Multiplayer was fun with friends, but the lack of a strong endgame or meaningful progression left me feeling like my adventures eventually ran out of purpose.
Still, Starbound was a relaxing and creative experience that scratched my itch for exploration and building. It may not have the staying power of some other sandbox games, but its charm, freedom, and sheer scope make it a game I’d revisit whenever I just want to wander the stars and see what’s out there.
Personally I felt like the game was a great successor to terraria, dare i say even better. While the reception has been overall strong, I think there is a lot left under the table as the game seems criminally underrated in my opinion.
Underrated Gem. Base game is kinda bad but the workshop carries the game by a LOT! Idc what people will say, always will have a place for me somewhere. 8/10 or sumn, idk.
an amazing game, i love everything about this.
tho it is very laggy for some reason( i recommend getting some mods to help with that)
community is lovely
While I did love this game, it's not without it's flaws. Let me explain the pros and cons respectively and I'll get depth on why I feel the way I do.
Pros:
-Large variety of blocks, resources, crafting and building
-Inter-planetary travel
-Worlds loop around
-Worlds have their own major and sub biomes
-Rich lore and many playable races
-Advanced modding community
-Wide roster of weapons
-Selectable difficulty levels
-Customize your own space ship and pilot your mech
-Build a crew or develop a colony
-Lots of exploration to do
-Lovely soundtrack
-Cozy pixel art style
-Enemies won't track you unless you go close
-You can duel wield
-Encounter structures and villages
-Special abilities to augment your movement
-Ways for farming and automation
-More content than you know what to do with
Cons:
-Overwhelmingly reliant on mods
-Clunky Combat
-World weather and enemies can grief
-Extremely limited viable usage of mechs
-Crafting vs exploring progression at odds
-Planets become redundant
-No variation of underground structures or layouts
-NPC's that aren't merchants painfully bland and useless
-Crew members are brainless bullet sponges who stand in everyone's way. Even yours.
-Trying to read the lore is punishing to the player, the game does not pause when reading and hunger ticks down
-The story and progression is messy, and mods have no real answer
-Difficulty seesaws between too hard and too easy, and NPC quests do not scale to the the planet's threat level
-90% of loot is weapons. You'll have too many weapons and none strong enough for what you actually need to face
-You have to dedicate the game's accessory slot to an item called "EPP" in order to survive a planet for more than a minute.
-Boss loot is often underwhelming, and enemy loot is 90% low-tier crafting resources
-No minimap to track where you are or where you've been
-Sub menus like inventory and codex do not pause the game even if you play singleplayer
-No real to stifle enemy spawns for safe building, or increase them for combat
-Quest markers are often inaccurate and unreliable
I loved this game at first, got addicted even. While this game does have a lot of content, it doesn't have depth. Colony building, trading, events, missions, but they all feel very surface level. While it's easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour of a new race mod, new weapon set, or a new planet, but that can only go so far. I kept getting sobered by the fact that these planets have nothing new but recolored rock and soil, I need a new EPP to survive on the planet, and encountering a village of the new race mod I installed only gives me 1 line quotes and the same awful quests I can get anywhere. I thought I try my hand in colony building, only to realize they don't have any of the charm or utility of minecraft's villagers or terraria's town NPC's. The one time you find a mission, structure or enemy encounter that's exactly to the level of your gear and weaponry, the fun ends the moment you realize enemies don't respawn/have a spawner to come back from and the moment is all gone once you deal with all the enemies. Even with mods, I do not reccommend starbound, it can't scratch the itch you're hoping it can get.
Fantastic game, especially with mods. People's expectations were so high for the game that it really got a bad rap, but if you were to play it in a vacuum, it's got about 100 hrs of fun in it (vanilla version) and all that for 5$? Yep, count me in.
