Still bad after over a decade. Maybe I'll check out the sequel in 5 years to see if a fresh start helps the devs figure things out.
I have had this game since before release and I am just now reviewing, better late then never I guess. It is a great game, one of my favorites. I have seen many people compare it to Minecraft but in space. Really it is so much more then that. You really are an engineer, anything you can think of can be done, from simple ships to complex machinery. The only limit is your imagination. I highly recommend this game. It may take some people a while to learn with all the available building pieces and moving parts but once you build your first working creation it is all worth it, and it only gets better. The only negative thing I have to say about this game is multiplayer can be buggy sometimes, especially with more complex worlds/builds. It is still worth it in my opinion though. Some of my best times are playing this game online with friends.
Do NOT get this game if you want to not spend a fortune on DLCs just for you to A install a mod be cause most mods require tons of DLCs B you have to buy like a 100 DLCs just for your build to look good this was a complete waste of my time and money oh and ps keen software house if you want your game to be popular DONT MAKE ME BUY SO MANY DLCS JUST TO HAVE FUN
This game is just AMAZING. It takes some getting used to, a little complex, but once you get a good server (creative or survival) and know what your doing, its addictive.
Very creative and interesting . VR strategic game
Great for mindless mining or building stuff... Which gets a lot more intentional when you start running out of resources.
It's a little buggy, but definitely playable. If you enjoy games similar to minecraft with an open world and freedom to dig, manufacture and build anything your mind can come up with you will enjoy this game.
Space Engineers – 884 Hours In, Still Addicted
After 884 hours, I can say Space Engineers is hands down one of the best sandbox games out there. If you love building, space, and engineering, this game will hook you.
You can design anything—from small fighters to massive capital ships and full-on planetary bases. The physics make everything feel real, and every ship you build actually has to function, not just look cool. Survival mode keeps things challenging, with resource management, power issues, and random pirate attacks to keep you on your toes especially with mods gosh darn then it gets epic!!!!
The multiplayer is where it really shines. Building with friends, setting up space stations, and getting into full-on wars is insanely fun. Add in the modding community, and you’ll never run out of new things to try.
10/10, would lose another 884 hours. 🚀
Made a mining hovercraft, filled it and tried to land too quickly, crashed into the ground completely destroying the ship. 10/10! super fun! build and design your own ships for land, air and space.
So im playing on a Steam Deck and it did crash about 3 times on the start up tutorial, but 3rd times the charm. The graphics are about that of No Mans Sky and the gameplay is similar. Ive been playing for about 3 hours now and thats just getting through the Tutorial and getting into a game. The game crashed once more while i was trying to find a Server to join, but didnt crash after that. It gets a bit laggy when you open the build screen, while it loads all the things you can build so thats kind of a erk lol. Its great to play with friends or just talking with friends on discord and ive yet to game with other people so idk how that would play out on the Steam Deck. I would recommend this however to anyone who likes to discover things and build things. Its definitely a Gather materials and dont let your power or oxygen run out survival type game and that is actually got me interested. I like it and can't wait to get further into gameplay.
Really good game about constructing anything from small rovers for roaming the surface of a planet to massive multiple story ships that can function as a mobile base. You can to make sure all the systems of your ship work properly and are connected to each other while also trying to keep your build looking nice. Personally I play survival because I find the grind for resources makes you build things you wouldn't otherwise in creative however if you're trying to conceptualize a ship you can make it in creative, Blueprint it and then build the blueprint in survival. My (and from what I can most people also have this issue) main gripe with the game is once you're done building what you want to build there's not much to do with your ships. The NPC system is bare bones and is mostly there to gain reputation with nonexistent people, You'll find space pirates or civilian freighters but they're basically just robots. I highly recommend you get your footing with the controls and learn how to add ship systems and then add some mods to make things interesting.
Just vanilla I'd give it a solid 7/10 but with mods it jumps to a 9/10 game. Bring friends unless you like doing everything yourself
I love the game and have been watching on youtube for a year or so. dosent take long to get the contols down and runs amazingly well on my laptop.
First good physics game i have played. The game lacks a bit of direction/goals, but overall is amazing
From the start (alpha) they always said they would finish making this game, and they did but now they want more money from everyone and have called it SE2. The player base was betrayed.
Excelente juego para quienes son creativos. Tiene un sin fin de posibilidades para explotar tu creatividad
This game is what it is, and that is great. Love a lot of space themed games, like Elite Dangerous, Eve Online, and Star Citizen. But those all have a terrible issue with development that thinks 'balancing' means unproductive time sinks, that waste a player's time to an absurd degree. Every time I play this game, I plan, and the amount of time I need to achieve my goals is dictated near exclusively by how well I plan and how much I am willing to put into it. I cannot tell you how much this game breaks the mold of being trapped in a 'developer alley' where you put time and effort into pointless time sinks of 'game design' to sacrifice the game being fun on the altar of 'balance' whatever that is. This and Conan Exiles alone I have found to go this direction.
It's pretty cool, really exceeds when u get into the mods tho
All I will say to anyone that tries this game, is to take your time, watch some learning videos and enjoy it. It is a very fun and entertaining game.
Fun and relaxing game. Building can be a pain at times, but if you're patient, it all works out.
This game takes me back to Saturday mornings as a youngster with those popular little plastic bricks creating the stuff of my imagination. It's creative mode lets you indulge yourself and try things before you commit your resources to them in game, a great feature! There is certainly room for criticism as things can sometimes seem.. twitchy. I've died from walking into things, but there is usually a save to fall back on in survival. Overall, I'm enjoying it. I'm sure I would have bought it sooner but it was not displayed in my feed as I filter out 'early access' games since I don't want to be a play tester. I actually found it by accident as Steam, still to this day, has it tagged as an 'early access' game. I don't understand why they have an 'early access' tag on a game that was released over 5 years ago.. but here we are.
You build a base, it gets destroyed, you restore the base and build turrets, it gets destroyed again, you build a more sturdy base with even more turrets, it gets annihilated by some buster with a shield generator in the ass.
We need to go easier on mods.
I have really enjoyed this game. Great for being creative and building some amazing bases/machines/space ships, really anything you can possibly imagine !
Absolutely stunning game, I love this sandbox feeling. Just gather some resources and build whatever you want.
This game is REALLY about exploring and creativity. I had and still have so much fun playing this game!
And it's not pay-to-win at all, since the DLCs are mostly cosmetics.
Ah, Space Engineers. If you’ve ever dreamed of mindlessly constructing massive ships just to blow them up, this is the game for you. It’s a perfect blend of creative freedom and chaos, where the sky—or rather, the void—is the limit. The building system is incredibly deep, letting you design everything from towering space stations to nimble fighters, all with a level of detail that would make any engineer proud. Of course, that detail is mostly used to make sure your ship falls apart spectacularly when you inevitably crash it, because who doesn't love a good explosion?
Now, here’s the kicker: I’ve spent a solid 51 hours playing this game and still have no idea how to actually play it. Sure, I’ve built some impressively wrecked ships and accidentally launched myself into deep space a few times, but when it comes to actual gameplay... yeah, still figuring that out. The real fun, for me at least, starts when you and your friends throw together some makeshift fighters, slap on some weapons, and head into space for a good old-fashioned duel. It’s chaotic, it’s ridiculous, and it’s exactly what you want from a game where you build, crash, and blow up things just for fun.
The physics are a big part of the fun—nothing ever goes quite as planned, and half the enjoyment is watching your creations go up in flames. Sure, there’s a lot more to the game, like exploration and engineering (I think?), but I’m too busy launching ships into random asteroids and seeing how much damage I can cause before they explode. If you love to build, blow stuff up, and completely ignore the “proper” way to play, Space Engineers is an absolute blast, and you don’t need to know how to play to have fun.
great game very fun, quite a steep learning curve but combines all my favorite things about terra tec, minecraft and no mans sky.
If you're into construction, exploration, and experimentation, Space Engineers is a must-try! The game gives you opportunities to design and build complex ships, space stations, and planetary bases. The freedom to experiment with physics and mechanics is awesome, and open universe is perfect for exploration. Plus, it lets you fulfill your lifelong dream of becoming a miner... because who doesn't want to spend hours drilling into asteroids for resources?
Multiplayer connection really could use some improvement. Very nice mechanics and overall fun to play
I have played this game for nearly 600 hours, its an amazing game probably my favourite game of all time.
You might look at the game and go "there is not much to it" but its actually a really fun and complicated game that involves physics simulation and sandbox and loads of engineering.
Do I recommend this game to anyone? YES I DO, BEST GAME. Overall this game is a 10/10 I recommend it to everyone.
I've been playing this game for about a decade. Over time, I have watched Keen add so many fantastic things to the game, things that the engine was in no way designed for. Keen is very good at two things; pushing boundaries, and listening to players.
Buy the game. it's $20 NOT on sale, it's honestly worth 4 times that.
Had this game for a long time. At first it was not in a good spot. You spawn and if you was lucky, space pirates didn't find you right away and blast you and the spawn out of the sky and camp there until you restarted the game.
But now it's one of my favorites. I'll just sit back and build. Well worth the money. Plus with all the mods and workshop items, it never gets old.
Recommed.
I am an engineer, And I am in space. What more could you ask for?
Steep learning curve, and can be challenging at times, but a solid 7/10.
I finally got a computer that could run this game smoothly after owning it for years, I come back and I see the block menu is full of DLC blocks I can't access and can't hide. The monetization of this game has taken a sharp downturn since I last touched it.
For a game about creativity and self-expression, they sure have expressed how much they want your money. Fun game, but I'll let this go back to collecting dust.
A fantastic game if you want to kill an unhealthy amount of time! Very fun too
over 1200 hours and i still can't build anything better than a brick
10/10 would recommend
Addictive & fun. Needs more encounter interactions, which mods have stepped in for that for a while. Hard learning curve but sure scratch's the creative itch.
I only heard about this game with the reveal of Space engineers 2 just before Xmas in 2024, even though it's now ~11 years old. It's basically everything I've ever wanted in a builder/space sim/sandbox game. The Studio seems to really listen to it's player base, has low priced DLC's (and many of them) and plans to continue supporting this game even after SE2 launches 8 days from this post.
The one thing I will caution anyone thinking of jumping in is the learning curve isn't a curve at all, it's a cliff a mile high and you're at the bottom, given a single fork and told to climb to the top... Enjoy
By far my absolute favorite game of all time. It does have some issues. The net code is not very good, but that is partially because this game was originally made when multiplayer really wasn't that big, so it wasn't part of the original roadmap. The devs are fairly good at listening to the community. The modding community is amazing and always pushing the limits of what is capable. Worth every penny!
if you want to create something or recreate your favorite series ship, this game is for you and with mountain of workshop content to play with, from quality of life to straight up death laser. though the game learning can be very steep learning, but through trial and error(and lots of youtube) you will learn the basics, also praise lord Klang
A very fun game but it can be a little hard and boring some times and servers are not that fun Because I have plaed in servers for 4 hours and not once seen another player.
Space Engineers is a great game for people who love building things from scratch, being able to over engineer everything and automate so much. Exploration is a must to seek out new mats and new things to build. Just play it and don't let it overwhelm you, take it slow. There is a good bit of a learning curve to the build system. I recommend watching this "Splitsie" guy's content to get a foot up on beginning: https://www.youtube.com/splitsie. He knows how to get you started and once you get the ropes you can have a blast!
What kept me playing:
I am a C# programmer and there is a "programmable block" that allows the player to write in game script in C#. This was very stimulating for me as I love building and coding. It kind of married the 2 for me and I was able to write some neat scripts and have a LOT of fun.
The game was abandonware for 6 years straight with no updates and no support, in 2 years they have grabbed the game again, released 10 DLC's with skins and done nothing to improve the game. Now they are releasing the same exact game again with a 2 at the end of its name in which they are planning to place all of the improvements that should have been included in this game.
Don't buy this game.
This game is very fun to play if you enjoy building space ships and rovers. I also enjoyed downloading other players hard work from the steam workshop and learning how they work and giving them a try. This makes me really respect how creative and smart this community is. However one thing about this game I really do not like is how every single major update is locked behind pay walls and this is the only game I have ever played that performs this kind of practice. I am aware that one DLC is only $4, But this adds up fast overtime. Especially when you download stuff from the steam workshop where the newer content will require either some or all of the DLCs to be able to access the build and not have it completely useless. Sure the Developers uses these DLCs to generate money to remain in business. But there are other ways of making money that does not force players to spend a crap ton of money on DLCs to be caught up.
The ultimate sandbox environment. Build elegant starliners or practical and robust space freighters! Extensive backlog of content in the form of steam workshop mods and ships.
I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys sandbox/exploration games.
They've had so much time to make the game fun, it's ridiculous. They've focused so much on monetizing with DLC even though the game's core gameplay loops are completely unrefined still. Seriously janky physics make the game hard to love, and will damage your ships. Everything you build disintegrates with the lightest touch. Combat just doesn't feel good, and for a game about building ships, this is incredibly disappointing. I *hope* the second game will be better, but I seriously doubt it. It feels like a game made without any heart. :(
Ok!
I really like Space Engineers.
BUT! You are going down the path of Stellaris.
All your DLC's together is 8x the the base game cost.
Stop for the love of christ.
I get it. Adding DLC is a nice way to keep the game going, but you have done enough.
Make a new game or leave it tot he mod community, cause I am done spending money on this game.
I bought a game, not a fucking subscription.
Love it, best physics based, base building and crafting modern age game so far!
what can I say. SE is a lot of fun if your creative and want to challenge yourself to fight the gravity of a planet or the depth of space. So much make
very hard to learn at first, but so worth it. extremely fun and complex with the best possible community of any game ive ever played.
---Game Appeal:
A fantastic game with limitless building potential using a block-based system that, despite its structure, does not significantly hinder creativity.
---Difficulty Curve:
Steep learning curve; early survival gameplay is straightforward, but building and advanced mechanics become significantly more complex.
A wiki or guidance from an experienced player can be beneficial during the learning process.
---Multiplayer Experience:
More enjoyable with friends, especially those with experience.
---DLCs:
Not essential, but recommended for multiplayer and specific parts that enhance gameplay.
---Mods:
Easily accessible through Steam Workshop and Mod.io, providing additional creativity beyond vanilla gameplay.
---Summary:
Overall, Space Engineers is a rewarding game that offers a rich building experience, enhanced by friends, DLCs, and mods, allowing for boundless creativity even within a block-based framework.
ive played 40 hours so far and i feel like ive barely scratched the surface, 10/10
