an excellent game that poses great fun for hours on end, the learning curve can be steep but is forgiving when you figure out the intro steps
A great game. I love the amount of detail in building and the blueprint system, although I might like a little bit more variety in block weapon choice. Great atmosphere, pretty immersive. Quite a bit of a learning curve, but once you learn how things work it becomes even more enjoyable. It's also completely open world, so you can go basically anywhere at any time if you have the resources and/or ship to do so.
Space Engineers is a game that caters to players who enjoy deep, technical gameplay and have the patience to experiment and learn. It’s an incredible sandbox for those who love building and problem-solving in space, and the freedom it offers to construct anything from small ships to massive space stations is hard to beat.
However, the game is not without its challenges. The steep learning curve, occasional technical problems, and limited content in certain areas can detract from the experience. That said, for players who are willing to put in the time and effort, Space Engineers offers a rewarding and endlessly customizable space-faring experience.
Pros:
Deep and detailed building mechanics
Stunning physics and space environment
Rich multiplayer and modding community
Great for players who enjoy technical challenges
Cons:
Steep learning curve, especially for beginners
Limited mission variety and repetitive gameplay
Overall, Space Engineers is a fantastic game for those who enjoy space simulation and creative construction, but it’s not without its technical hurdles. If you can overlook the frustrations and embrace the challenge, there’s a lot to love about it.
Thanks ChatGPT!
The base game still offers great value—kudos to the developers for proving that you can succeed without gouging your customers!
For those looking for a bit more, the DLCs do increase the price to what you’d typically expect from a AAA title, but they’re not pay-to-win. The DLC mainly limits the variety of blocks you can build with, though you can still use DLC items in worlds created by others.
While the game can be frustrating at times due to its steep learning curve, it’s definitely worth sticking with! The depth and complexity of how blocks interact to build everything from bases to ships and contraptions can be overwhelming, and you might find yourself scratching your head when something doesn’t work as expected.
The modding community is also thriving, allowing for even deeper customization and offering unique gameplay experiences.
If you enjoy deeply creative games with the option for (optional) combat, then this one is definitely worth your time!
carefully balanced my engines to make sure they wouldnt produce unwanted torque only to remember that torque doesn't fucking exist in this universe and that relativity means nothing
but hey lego spaceships at least!
Took me a while to grasp the full spectrum of this game from the basic to the advanced if you love to think out side the box and blowing things up then this game is for you and a great way to challenge your creativity. 10/10 would recommend.
This game is simple yet sophisticated. A fun challenge for anyone with an imagination. People who have no imagination... I'm looking at you... should stay away. Have fun and kick rocks! P.S. I need early access to SE 2!!!
At the time of this writing, I have 899.6 hours logged in Space Engineers, varying between survival and creative. I've hosted my own servers, I've modded the game to hell and back, I've built massive ships and even bigger ship yards. I've waged wars in capital ships....and I've danced through withering fire in just my suit, armed only with a grinder. I have 600ish more hours in this game than the next closest in my library. I think that's all the review it needs.
amazing building and let my creativity go crazy everything its limitless only your mind determans what you can build and create, highly recommended
I've played Space Engineers a few years back, during alpha, so i really wanted to display my thoughts with the game as it's developed since space engineers 2 is in development. It's a bit of a yap but i'll put a tl;dr at the end, i just want to spill my heart about the game.
This game is awesome, i love the creativity you can pull with all kinds of things in here, if you sat down and really thought it through, you could program a whole mech, make shipyards for constructing and modifying ships, or discover efficient engine designs you'd share between all your stellar builds like i have.
As a person with a deep enjoyment for everything space and building related, this game fulfills everything i could imagine and scratches an itch to be creative. I once built an ice mining rig not too dissimilar to an oil rig in all it's functions to fuel my ships with hydrogen and i still use the same or similar design. I have a lot of fond memories of my creations, you can see it all over the community of others builds being shared and enjoyed.
Here comes the 'however'....
I really wanted to support Keen Software House during development, so when the first DLC released i jumped at the opportunity to fund their creation. I saw what it offered, there was free content which added quality of life to the base game... and then cosmetic blocks you'd have to pay for, which some had a functional value in some small ways. It kind of ticked me off, that can kind of ruin the creativity of a creative game when you lock blocks behind a pay wall, even if it served very little function.
Then they released more DLC with cosmetic blocks that served some of a function... then another and another. While these blocks only did a little on their own, i found myself staring at the DLC's with an angry hunger, that i could totally build this amazing interior that looked lively and warm... if i just coughed up a few bucks. It was a few dollars, it offered a few things, but the creativity and imagination you could have with them felt barred. The worst was the warfare DLC, which offered real strategic advantages in a fight so anyone who had it immediately had an upper hand in small arms battles, which felt pay to win. I get the developers need to fund themselves, and i liked the game so hell yes i bought all the DLC at the time... then more released.
I found myself somewhat drifting away from the game slowly, all this DLC keeping me from expressing my imagination in full just one after the other, i'd try making ships as creatively as i could but find i couldn't because i'd need to go buy other cosmetic blocks. I found myself really working on the entrance of a station, making it look good, being happy with how it looks and then... stopping. I couldn't do all the things i wanted, i couldn't be as creative as i wanted, i couldn't be as imaginative, and i'd buy the DLC to try to remedy that because of how much i liked the game but i was just feeding into the problem, so i stopped and i haven't played in awhile.
Now i'm seeing what should be a visual overhaul, instead they're doing what ark: survival evolved did, what overwatch did; making a whole '2' game with amped up visuals, an update wearing a 'new game mask'. I am very disappointed that they went down this route. The DLC being a few bucks each was kind of okay, it still sucked that creative blocks that would only serve to feed the imagination of the player was locked behind a paywall, with the advertisement being; anyone else who got it having much better ships than you ever could, since you don't have it. Now a whole new universe that'll be indifferent from Space Engineers is going to be, i assume, behind the price of a whole game.
As a long time player of this game, who wanted an infinitely imaginative and creative experience, this really fit the bill until they started bottle necking it so to speak.
If you want an infinitely imaginative experience where you can be as creative as you want in space for ~100$ in order to use all of it's features, and then eventually another 20-60$ to enjoy better graphics, get this game.
If you want an infinitely imaginative experience where you can be as creative as you want in space for a reasonable price, get something else.
If you're looking for a worthwhile space game, I'd recommend Kerbal Space Program, Expyrion: Galactic Survival and/or X4: Foundations (I know KSP also tried pulling the '2' thing, and worse failed, the whole game isn't barred behind 20 DLC's and is really fun even without any at a reasonable price. X4 also has a couple DLC's, while Timelines isn't great, Kingdom End is actually pretty good and a worthwhile expansion like DLC's should be)
Tl;Dr I really enjoyed this game from the start, but one DLC after the other, I went from enjoying this all the time for years to drifting away. All the imagination and creativity was bottle necked and barred behind 70$+, and that really sucks. I would no longer recommend this game if you're looking for a reasonable price to create things at your imagination's limit, though this game more than any other fulfilled that, see above for recommendations.
Brilliant game. Countless hours lost to this fantastic timewaster.
Great to play alone, amazing to play with friends.
Cool fun and chill game about designing and engineering spaceships vehicles and etc.
Unless you're playing in survival with a friend and he crashes the mining ship you spent 2 hours building armor block by armor block, drill by drill into the ground.
its not so chill after that
I Bought this game expecting a game similar to Scrap Mechanic or other similar games, but I physically CANNOT play this game because the building system sucks ass. It is fucking terrible for somebody who's used to more conventional building mechanics. And before you ask, I'm okay with having to connect up conveyors and shit, it just bothers me that the building system just does not meet the standard of other games in this genre. I'm still gonna recommend this to people who can handle the building mechanics.
An amazing open-solar system game, with great destruction physics and mechanics
Space Engineers is an Open World sandbox. This means that, unlike other games that tell you what to do and where to go, you make up your own story. So it is heavily dependent on your own imagination once you get past the first basic challenges. It does have a steep learning curve but there are many YouTube videos on how to get started. And there you'll find a lot of inspiration on what can be done in the game.
The first steps are to find and mine ores, get the materials to design and build methods to extract and process that ore. From static drilling stations to flying miners to rovers with drilling attachments. Build a base with refineries and assemblers, and the power to run them.
I have 11,000 hours in this game. Here are some of the things I've done... played the game starting on each of the spawn points, built bases on every planet and every moon both on the surface and underground. Built space stations between all the planet/moon pairs. Designed ships of all sizes, for all purposes, built rovers from scouts to mobile bases.
The limit in the game is your imagination. Build a city, a road through a mountain, have distant mining operations and connect them. Build trains and now automated drones. It is up to you, enjoy, challenge yourself.
The game as a whole is good, but it is outdated, the game engine becomes very bad with a large number of buildings, some mechanics and mechanisms are terribly overcomplicated, a lot of bugs and crashes, while my computer is above average and modern games do not hang.
Not long ago with a friend very long played on one save, and after building one ship, the save just went bad and stopped running, even backups do not work.
We have straight hands, just the game in critical moments does not work stably.
very fun and creative actually alot of space exploration and discovery, you can do such things has even build astroid bases and even bases on another planet or an orbital station or just a ship its really up to you, But if you like discovering, engineering, and letting your mind go crazy on things that even doesnt make any sense. this game is for you.
sadly that they dont have every dlc in the game but it is what it is. anyways 10/10 game.
I've read some of the negative comments about this game. No. You don't need to be an engineer to play this game. You don't need to be a genius to play this game. But I admit if your IQ is barely above room temperature then this game is not for you.
Yes. Gives you everything to get creative. Enforces rules of the physical world on you. So it's realistic. Yes if your brand spanking new ship hits obstacles such as rocks it will break. That's what happens when you have a realistic system. It is more than a game and that's why we love it.
Example: I would come across gold mines that were really deep, say 100m down or more. I set myself the challenge of designing a mobile vehicle that could dig and extract minerals that deep, discard the rocks to one side and store the gold for transfer to a base. Many hours of trial and error. But finally had this flimsy thing that nevertheless worked as intended. The sense of achievement was so immense. So it's a challenging game with unmatched satisfaction when you achieve what you set out to design and build.
One thing missing from the game is simulation of liquid water. But that's not even a biggy if you aspire to design and build space ships to go to heavens.
Probably the greatest weakness is that the game is too open and sandboxy. It can be improved immensely if a campaign is developed that step by step challenges the player to build more sophisticated machinery, then automate them, etc. Devs should do that.
Amazing , many hours of creativity and exploration , meditative and inspirational. A great game to think to,
How have i not known about this game earlier in life. i absolutely love it.
Voxel base building and mining, recourse management, battles, heckin space ship battles!!!!
i think i most enjoy building structures with all the blocks and contraptions. verry fun game.
I love the diversity of the game.. wanna build a moon base? Do it. Wanna build a drone factory on an astroid? Cool. Wanna build a huge automated gunship? Go nuts. Or do you wanna befriend different factions and complete little sidemissions while going to war against spacepirates? Definitely.
the developer is a little (see: VERY) iffy and it can be a bit buggy but you can build basically whatever you want. you aren't just limited to spacecraft, you can make buggies and tanks and planes and whatnot
i prefer survival since i like earning my ships but there's a neat creative mode too!
space engineers has always been good, recent updates like contact and automatons have made it even better. I wanted to wait to write this review until the game felt complete, and now it does, it had it's weapon system re-worked, exploration re-worked, and gained new end-game encounters to give players something to do with their battleships. Building has never been easier or more detailed, I just found an entirely new set of armor blocks to make my ships look better, and building drones and missiles can now be done without complex scripting now as well. The game has a plentiful and impressive collection of mods, like weaponcore, shields, and real solar systems, which adds orbital mechanics for planets. Keen is even announcing a sequel(will probably take a few years), so If you like building sci-fi space ships, you will enjoy this game, however, it is not a rocket simulator, like ksp, it doesn't have air resistance(unless you download the mod for it of course).
Good space game. You should get if you have 35 GB available.
might just take an actual engineer to piece things together but after watching how to do videos on youtube i gathered how to make a drill on a mobile platform to dig for resources. problem was transportation on terrain. a good 7/10
Look, the game is just straight up amazing, bar none. The gameplay is good, but you can tell a LOT of thought was put into the design and UX. Not to mention hor gorgious it is, spent many times just sitting there in awe at the beauty at points. 10/10 One of my best games of all time.
Way too much going on to even ease yourself into it. Controls are not intuitive. Block rotation uses a combination of mousewheel, page up, page down, delete, insert, and end, keys? Started an 'empty world' and was just thrown out floating in space. Friend joined and we had no idea where to find one another.
It's a great sandbox, with just enough limitations to spark your creativity.
Its really fun to build things, literally the only things you cant make are submarines and boats but who cares when you have SPACE boats!!
What can I say? It's a space sandbox with thousands of mods to make things interesting. Enemies? You got it. Big honking space lasers? Sure thing. Wanna play as a Space Marine? Yeah, we got skins for that.
It may not be the best optimized game ever, but it's definitely a labor of love of a team of devs that never stopped innovating. Just the base game itself is hundreds and hundreds of hours of fun times to be had, and with mod support, those hundreds easily pass a thousand. Make your space dreams come true and grab a cosmic coffee while you're at it.
I've put a few hours into this game, and purchased every DLC. Its the one game I never actually stop playing. Ill take a break, maybe even a long one. Then Ill get an idea for a new build, or some cool new mod will drop, and I'm back. Well worth the money IMO, and I already hyped for SE2 and VRage 3. Nominated for Labor of Love.
Do you want a game that allows you to build spaceships and use them to fight your friends? do you wish that ever6y detail of your ship could be modular? Then this is the game for you.
Outstanding game, you just need to put the time into learning it. I highly recommend this game, and it's many DLC's.
(VOTED FOR 2024 LABOR OF LOVE AWARD)
Honestly this game is so overly complicated, it doesn't not have a new player friendly interface. Building is just in no way understandable as any base or block sit halfway in the ground. Nothing i have looked online has mentioned this so all my structure start in the ground.
This game is a pretty good space sim that on its own is pretty good. It is undeniably better when you have the dlc and or mods but it still does good on its own.
dez de dez, sandbox pra todos os gostos, pvp, pve, construção, sobrevivência, criativo e suporte a mods da comunidade
If your a fan of working with logistics and building functional ships and rovers this game is fantastic. The devs are constantly updating and working on this game even with it being over 10 years old. Awesome game and the developers are something to pay attention to
10/10
It took me over 20 hours to reach space the first time. I crashed on re entry, I have now managed to re-enter without my ENTIRE ship blowing up. 10/10 cant wait to reach concerning hours of game play, and STILL being as bad as I am now.
Seriously great, and despite being released years ago, this game as always delivered hours of fun. Problem solving, combat, exploration, you name it, and its here.
I view this game similar to Gmod, in that it is a bit like an empty sandbox for you to build whatever you want in a game. You can use mods (you will end up using mods) and the in game tools to create the experience you want whether it is survival against NPCs, a realistic KSP like game with orbits and aerodynamics, a factory/automation game, or even a GM hosted game setting with strangers online or your friends.
reminds me of terraria and minecraft in the way that it's just like: "you'll figure it out"
took me quite a while to set up even a minor base because i was fumbling around so much
it's a nice game to just sit and relax with but it does take quite a bit of patience to get through and learn as it tells you the absolute basics like movement, interaction with the equipment, fighting and everything else like how conveyors work, how to set up power, how to make stuff, how to use the build planner and its shortcuts. It gives you the information indirectly and doesn't tell you what way is the right way.
But if you're okay with a sandbox game that doesn't tell you what you should do, then i'd totally recommend it.
Games got lots of potential. needs a better tutorial. got through 3 hours of play without knowing wtf i was doing.
Its Minecraft. In space. With physics.
It is the most enraging, satisfying, confusing game I have ever played, and I cant stop.
The game itself has great content, with or without the DLCs. But where it really shines is the mods/custom servers.
Its got something for absolutely everyone.
Just don't forget to say your nightly prayer to Klang.
Crossplay is ONLY for server side play, you cannot play crossplay in a private friend only capacity without buying/making a server to play on. this fact needs to be advertised. otherwise this game is great
It's like Minecraft with create mod, but on space. Really recommend, 10/10
Once I figured everything out, this game has been a blast. Has quickly become a favorite game to play. All kinds of mods on the workshop for quality of life too, and even some really awesome creations on there as well.
I really want to love this game, but omg it is so complicated with absolutely zero instruction. I spent 8 hours trying to follow spitsie's amazing tutorial (thank you spitsie), mining by hand for nickel that builds only a few motors per full inventory, and now I finally have a headache and a mining ship that will not even fly or move upright. I am tired of these super complicated games that require a full time job of youtube videos just to learn how to play.
This game has been out (alpha/beta) for over 10 years and they still are updating things and adding some new content. There isn't that big of a control hurdle in my opinion and a very rich workshop for it too. Only possible downside is no fluids (water etc) but KSW(KeenSoftwareHouse) is currently working on a new game engine that will be able to handle fluid physics (and more I'm sure)
Great game, great developers. They set the standard for proper game development.
Space Engineers: A Comprehensive Review
Overview
Space Engineers, developed by Keen Software House, is a sandbox game that combines elements of space exploration, engineering, survival, and combat. Released in 2013 as an early access title and officially launched in 2019, the game has continued to evolve with regular updates, community support, and modding features. As of 2024, Space Engineers remains a go-to title for players seeking creative freedom and technical depth in a vast, procedurally generated space.
Gameplay
At its heart, Space Engineers is about designing and building. Players are free to construct spacecraft, planetary rovers, space stations, and even massive starbases while managing resources and surviving in space or on planetary surfaces.
Core Features:
Creative and Survival Modes:
Creative Mode: Unlimited resources and no restrictions. This mode focuses on building and experimenting with complex designs.
Survival Mode: A more challenging experience where players gather resources, manage energy and oxygen, and fend off environmental threats.
Building Mechanics:
Construction in Space Engineers revolves around placing blocks, with systems like conveyors, pistons, and rotors allowing for intricate, functional designs. You can create anything from mining drones to fully automated ships with programmable blocks and scripts.
Physics Simulation:
The game boasts a realistic physics engine, meaning ships require proper thrusters, gyroscopes, and structural integrity to function. Collisions, gravitational forces, and weight distribution add an extra layer of challenge.
Exploration and Combat:
Players can explore planets, moons, and asteroids, searching for resources and encountering NPC drones or player-controlled ships. Combat includes both ship-to-ship battles and ground-based skirmishes, with weapons ranging from turrets to missile launchers.
Multiplayer and Community Features
Multiplayer:
Space Engineers supports multiplayer, allowing friends or strangers to collaborate on massive projects or compete in PvP scenarios. Dedicated servers enable large-scale worlds where players establish factions, trade routes, or wage war.
Modding Support:
Steam Workshop integration provides access to thousands of community-created mods, including custom blocks, weapons, scenarios, and quality-of-life improvements. Modding has significantly extended the game’s lifespan.
Scenarios:
Players can engage in scripted missions or challenges created by the developers or the community, ranging from survival challenges to story-driven adventures.
Graphics and Performance
As of 2024, Space Engineers has received several graphical updates, improving textures, lighting, and environmental effects. While not the most visually stunning game compared to modern AAA titles, its graphics are functional and immersive, particularly for a sandbox of this scale.
Performance can vary depending on the complexity of player creations and the number of active objects in a world. High-end PCs handle large-scale builds better, but even mid-range systems can manage smaller projects with stable frame rates. Multiplayer servers occasionally suffer from desync issues, especially in large worlds with many players.
Challenges and Depth
Steep Learning Curve:
New players may find the game daunting due to its intricate mechanics and lack of detailed in-game tutorials. Mastery requires patience and experimentation.
Resource Management:
In survival mode, players must gather materials, refine resources, and power their creations. Mismanagement of resources can lead to catastrophic failures, especially in remote locations.
Engineering Complexity:
Advanced projects, like fully automated ships or massive space stations, demand a deep understanding of game mechanics, including scripting and logic systems.
Updates and Longevity
Keen Software House has maintained a steady flow of updates and DLC since the game's release. DLCs are cosmetic or optional, focusing on new blocks, skins, and decorative elements, while major gameplay updates remain free. This approach has kept the community engaged without splitting the player base.
The vibrant modding community ensures that Space Engineers evolves with user-created content. From quality-of-life improvements to complete overhauls, mods have kept the game fresh and relevant.
Criticism
While Space Engineers is widely praised, it’s not without flaws:
Performance Limitations: Complex builds and multiplayer can strain the game engine, leading to lag or crashes.
Lack of Narrative Content: Players looking for a structured or story-driven experience may find the sandbox nature too open-ended.
Repetitive Survival Grind: Resource gathering can feel tedious in survival mode, particularly for solo players.
Final Thoughts
Space Engineers is a game for tinkerers, builders, and dreamers. Its sandbox freedom and deep mechanics make it a standout title for those who enjoy creating and exploring in space. While it demands patience and creativity, the rewards are immense, especially when building massive ships or thriving colonies.
Whether you’re playing solo, with friends, or diving into modded content, Space Engineers offers a virtually endless canvas for creativity and experimentation.
Pros:
Unparalleled creative freedom.
Robust physics and engineering systems.
Thriving modding community.
Regular updates and cosmetic DLC approach.
Cons:
Steep learning curve for new players.
Performance issues with complex builds or large multiplayer servers.
Limited narrative or structured content.
Score: 8.5/10 – A dream come true for space enthusiasts and engineers.
