The ultimate sandbox environment. Build elegant starliners or practical and robust space freighters! Extensive backlog of content in the form of steam workshop mods and ships.
I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys sandbox/exploration games.
They've had so much time to make the game fun, it's ridiculous. They've focused so much on monetizing with DLC even though the game's core gameplay loops are completely unrefined still. Seriously janky physics make the game hard to love, and will damage your ships. Everything you build disintegrates with the lightest touch. Combat just doesn't feel good, and for a game about building ships, this is incredibly disappointing. I *hope* the second game will be better, but I seriously doubt it. It feels like a game made without any heart. :(
Ok!
I really like Space Engineers.
BUT! You are going down the path of Stellaris.
All your DLC's together is 8x the the base game cost.
Stop for the love of christ.
I get it. Adding DLC is a nice way to keep the game going, but you have done enough.
Make a new game or leave it tot he mod community, cause I am done spending money on this game.
I bought a game, not a fucking subscription.
Love it, best physics based, base building and crafting modern age game so far!
what can I say. SE is a lot of fun if your creative and want to challenge yourself to fight the gravity of a planet or the depth of space. So much make
very hard to learn at first, but so worth it. extremely fun and complex with the best possible community of any game ive ever played.
---Game Appeal:
A fantastic game with limitless building potential using a block-based system that, despite its structure, does not significantly hinder creativity.
---Difficulty Curve:
Steep learning curve; early survival gameplay is straightforward, but building and advanced mechanics become significantly more complex.
A wiki or guidance from an experienced player can be beneficial during the learning process.
---Multiplayer Experience:
More enjoyable with friends, especially those with experience.
---DLCs:
Not essential, but recommended for multiplayer and specific parts that enhance gameplay.
---Mods:
Easily accessible through Steam Workshop and Mod.io, providing additional creativity beyond vanilla gameplay.
---Summary:
Overall, Space Engineers is a rewarding game that offers a rich building experience, enhanced by friends, DLCs, and mods, allowing for boundless creativity even within a block-based framework.
ive played 40 hours so far and i feel like ive barely scratched the surface, 10/10
Great Game with a brilliant concept, but don't bother getting just the base game. Seemed like over half of the buildable objects are locked behind paid DLC. If your going to get this game, get the bundle with all of the DLC included.
A fun game if you like building spaceships.
Once again a disappointing fate of a cool game idea that died because of terrible developers.
Few years ago, when SpaceEngineers1 was still officially in Alpha state and was soon to be entering steam as Beta/EarlyAccess game, developers had a ton of promises: about survival, about NPCs, about new blocks/items and a ton more stuff. Around that time I bought SE1 because I wanted to support the Devs and live to see a full release of the game with all the promised features implemented.
Well... As we all can see - they never finished the game. They grabbed some money from selling unfinished game, they grabbed some more money from selling DLCs, they grabbed even more money from selling skins in steam, and guess what?
Now they are promising the SAME stuff they promised YEARS ago and want to get more money for it. Not because they actually did something and are ready to release it - no, it would be too good to be true. They want more money for the same PROMISES. Not for new content - for promises.
SE1 multiplayer? the only thing that they actually implemented as promised
Medieval engineers? Abandoned
SE1 planets? added to justify the time spent developing MedievalEngineers
SE1 new objects/mechanics? mostly locked via PAID DLCs
SE1 survival? Abandoned
SE1 combat/lore/NPCs? Abandoned
May Space Engineers rest in peace. :PeepoSadge:
I played it early on while it was still pretty bare-bones, and I enjoyed it for a long while, but as the years have gone on both the game and Keen itself have just gotten worse. Keen is desperately trying to milk the game for all they can with mediocre content packs, and it really just feels like the game's physics and functionality have actually gotten worse. It can be a fun sandbox to play around with, but you'd be better off sticking to a different game.
This is amazing. I've played for 6 years now. Only within 2 years have I really uncovered the potential of the VAST amount of things and techniques in this title.
I can't imagine regretting this. Well, maybe if all your interested in is running n' gunning, but you CAN do that here too.
Just buy it. Even with SE2 coming..
awesome game. i really like the unlimited possibilities and the mods
Really fun sandbox game. I do wish there were more encounters n stuff, but the assertive combat systems mod *mostly* fixes that issue for me. i don't generally enjoy sandbox games, but for whatever reason i just keep coming back to this one over and over.
Really fun game, gets the creativity flowing, and constant updates and improvements by the devs have been amazing, highly recommend for anyone that enjoys building sandbox games, its top tier.
Whether you like building, PVP, Survival, etc, this is a great game for an affordable price. great modding community too.
This game is endless hours of creativity and space exploration with only one's imagination as their limit.
I think it is a great game and it blends survival, shooter and engineering games very well
Stoked for the sequel. Been waiting since the tease that there could be one. It says single player on steam though. I hope its an error or only because the initial test needed is much larger than anticipated

Instead of going to space, i can drilling through to the Earth Core, raid enemy base, and shoot my friends with rocket launcher. 10/10
Probably my favourite game of all time, and its been developing over five years since I first purchased it, enough said.
I Received a Distress Signal
I didn't go for a long time because I thought there might be enemies that could attack me.
Having no other choice, I decided to go to the distress signal without my ship.
I didn’t want to risk my ship getting damaged if I were attacked.
The distress signal came from the top of a snowy mountain.
I carefully advanced to conserve my jetpack's fuel.
When I arrived, I saw a massive ship, half-buried in the ground.
I readied my weapon and approached.
It didn’t appear to have any turrets, but I was still on edge.
After inspecting the ship further, I decided to head to the cockpit.
There was an engineer inside, but he was already dead.
He had a note on him:
"There’s something wrong with this ship, and I want to figure out what it is. I don’t want to die, but I’ll fail at both."
After reading the note, I mustered the courage to enter the ship.
Weapon in hand, I stepped inside.
The interior was as wrecked as the exterior.
Doors weren’t working, and the lighting system was barely functional.
Once I realized there was no immediate danger, I relaxed.
I holstered my weapon and took out my welder.
The ship’s design intrigued me.
Using the welder, I began studying how the ship was constructed.
After all, I’m a Space Engineer 😅
As I continued exploring, I found a crate.
It contained some useful items.
From the crate, I learned that if I didn’t claim the ship, it would eventually disappear.
I claimed the ship without hesitation.
But it wasn’t that simple.
Claiming it only prevented the ship from vanishing.
I had to hack and rebuild every part to make it truly mine.
This was an incredible opportunity—
I could have a massive ship with minimal effort.
Repairing a pre-built ship would also greatly improve my space engineering skills.
I got to work immediately.
I disassembled the intact parts of the ship to rebuild them as my own.
However, there weren’t many usable parts left.
I needed more raw materials.
My base was about 5 km away.
I decided to head home and return with my ship.
After all, my ship could carry much more than I could.
At home, I refueled my jetpack and recharged my energy.
Then I started loading materials onto my ship.
At that moment, I had an idea.
I could build a welder on my ship, so it could repair and build without me manually carrying materials.
Instead of building a new ship, I modified my mining ship, replacing its drills with welders.
After the modification, I double-checked everything and set off.
When I arrived, I got to work.
But something was wrong—the welder on my ship wasn’t working.
To solve this, I needed to return home, but it was a long journey.
Since I’d already brought materials here, I decided to do the repairs manually.
After exhausting the materials, I returned home.
On the way, I watched welder ship videos on the Space Engineers database (a.k.a. YouTube) for inspiration.
I realized the problem:
The connection points of the welder didn’t match my ship’s design.
This was enlightening because I’d faced this issue before but never understood the cause.
Instead of further modifying my ship, I reverted it back to a drilling ship and started building a new ship from scratch.
This new ship was designed for my specific needs—
smaller, more mobile, and easier to maneuver.
Once it was complete, I loaded it with materials and set off again.
After a few more trips, I discovered a significant problem:
The ship I was repairing wasn’t a flyable ship—it was a stationary object.
Whenever I tried to convert it into a mobile ship, I encountered errors.
This terrified me.
Had I been repairing an immovable object all along?
Desperate, I scoured the Space Engineers database to see if anyone had faced a similar issue.
I found an answer:
The ship couldn’t have any parts or terrain within 3-4 meters of its structure.
I halted repairs and started excavating.
The digging was long and exhausting, and I wasn’t even sure it would work.
This uncertainty was draining.
Each time, I dug, tried to convert the ship, and failed.
I was close to giving up.
But more engineers in the database confirmed that digging should solve the problem.
So I dug relentlessly.
Eventually, I cleared a ship-sized space underneath it.
Finally, it worked.
I was overjoyed—my efforts weren’t in vain.
However, there was another problem.
When I converted the ship into a mobile object, some parts exploded or got damaged.
Thankfully, this happened in a simulation.
If I had done it for real, the ship would have been destroyed.
I kept testing and discovered the cause:
A small piece of terrain was embedded in the ship.
It was a bizarre, floating piece of land.
This single fragment defied physics and was the source of all my problems.
After multiple simulations, I managed to remove it without heavily damaging the ship.
At last, I converted the ship into a mobile object.
It worked! The ship could fly!
But as soon as it lifted off, it tilted to the left and exploded.
That’s when I realized—it didn’t have a gyroscope.
I returned home, gathered materials, and installed the gyroscope, along with a few other missing components.
Finally, after several trials, I got the ship to hover without issues.
It was massive and heavy, making maneuvering difficult.
It lacked left thrusters entirely, so turning and stopping were a challenge.
Despite its flaws, I decided to bring it home.
The journey was nerve-wracking.
By the time I arrived, the ship had only 2 minutes of power left.
It barely hovered, so I tilted it to the right to keep it steady and rushed to build a connection bridge.
With all my materials on the ship, I had to craft everything from scratch.
It was a race against time.
I dug, welded, built, and connected like a true Space Engineer.
Finally, with less than a minute to spare, I docked the ship.
I had a new ship now, and its name was—Mjolnir.
It's a very creative and fun game. Lots of cool stuff that you can build, like rovers, spaceships, space stations, bases, and more. There is also a fun survival mode, and you can make vehicles for combat and battle other people with your creations.
There are also mods which can add a lot and make the game even more fun, if you are into that kind of thing.
It's a bit like Minecraft meets Space Ships. If you are interested in that kind of stuff I highly recommend it, it's one of my favourite games.
The greatest sandbox game that never realised its potential. Just another sad story of the developers taking a promising concept in the wrong direction and ruining it.
Designing and building your own spaceships is fun, exploring and scavenging is fun, the (mostly) realistic physics simulation is fun, and scaling and automating your resource management is fun... Until you get to the point where you've built it all and realise you basically have nothing to use any of it for. Shooting down some dumb cargo ships that just drift lifelessly through space? That's seriously it?
The game is so good at distracting you with micro-goals right up until you get to the finish line, and then there's this defining moment where you take your ship out for the first time for a test flight, and do nothing. Let me tell you: Space has never felt so empty. You suddenly realise that this has all been a big waste of time and it sucks.
I guess the developers envisage you playing this game with your friends and competing with them, but the buggy multiplayer and lack of players prevent that from being fun. I only play singleplayer, and this game has none.
This game has (had) the best foundations for the most enjoyable and satisfying sandbox game ever. There's nothing else quite like it. In early builds that had you exploring the asteroid field it was all so promising. All they needed was to implement NPCs, improve the code a little to allow a faster max speed and fewer bugs, add an endgame goal like building some structures or an opposing faction to overcome and the game could have been feature-complete and the best in its genre.
Then the developers wasted years adding pointless glitchy 'planets' to the game that provided nothing to do, never fixed the most important bugs and never added an actual goal to the game... I hadn't played this game for years. I loaded it up since then and there's been some pottering around with the code, paid DLC added and nothing done to address the vacuous void where the actual game should be. And now they're releasing a sequel with the main selling point being a more detailed building system? That's not what's wrong with the game! What are you guys DOING?
I think of this game from time to time. I'll often get the itch to make a new world and feel that feeling of freedom, surviving, salvaging resources, gradually improving and upgrading my ship, working on new designs and possibilities, and then... Oh yeah. Then nothing. I spent so many hours playing this game thinking it was something else, and I will always keep wanting to come back to that amazing game that actually never existed, only to remember each time that defining moment of incredible disappointment.
Block based Space themed building game, that allows an individual to use their imagination. From Scenarios, Creative, and into Survival there are multiple game play options including Single & Multiplayer. If you get bored with the base, spice it up with some mods from Steam.
A great game I love playing and space engineers 2 are out it’s still worth buy space engineers 1 because num 2 will get multiplayer in 2 years at best.
this game is son fun from the disgns to the gameplay and even to the youtube show u can make with it
I bought this game years ago in early alpha. Like, aside from stations... Its the exact same game... Which sucks.... most of the functions that were intended to end up in the game didn't and the design team went off the cash grab deep end. I can't recommend this game to anyone. I'm disappointed really, It could have been such a good game but instead its trash. Developers need to finish this game before they try to sell me another.
Overall, a truly unique space exploration game with a highly in depth and rewarding vehicle/ship builder which I've played for many hours now alone and with mates. You have nigh limitless creativity around creating highly effective (or stupid craft) to fly around, mine resources, or fight enemies. With a vast modding community to back it up to help alleviate or extend the game in many unforeseen ways.
Even with such praise it should be noted that the ridiculous number of DLC's, performance, the almighty CLANG (the busted physics engine), and limited reasons to explore the vast cosmos do detract significantly from the game. Making solo play somewhat of a drag. However with friends this game becomes a true well polished gem given the limitless potential for good and evil provided by the engine. And as such, get my true recomendation.
Great resource gathering and production game with a steep learning curve nearly rivalling EVE Online (player for 7+yrs now).
Also really like that you can turn of the PvP element and just concentrate on the 'survival' and 'construction' aspect without needing to worry about been ganked by some mental midget that thinks it's fun (and no doubt gets their 'jollie's from this) to camp your spawn site and repeatedly attack/kill you.
Only thing 'lacking' is a basic tutorial for the 'start up' to get you on track with what is required to begin construction and how the construction process works. Took me quiet some time to figure out how to construct elements by needing to place them on the toolbar, not sure how much time I wasted on left/right/double/middle button I did before finding out that the item has to be dragged onto your toolbar, this lead to nearly dumping this game and going onto something else, luckily "Google" being my friend helped me out as the 'in-game' help actually wasn't.
TL;DR - Great construction/survival game that lets you do as you wish without needing to worry about PvP'ers or the now 'normal' zombie invasion.
it is a nice game to get lost in for hours trying to build things that might go boom
While it's difficult to get into, since the building is very complex and it takes a long long time to even build your first spaceship (survival mode) in a game about building spaceships and stations etc, the work is 100% worth it.
Once you get out of the atmosphere the game really opens up to you and there's a lot to do and you can build insane ships and stations.
BUT I do not see this game as a Singleplayer and wouldn't recommend playing it alone since it can quickly get tedious and lonely since there's no other creatures to interact with so it can feel lifeless.
Overall I'd give it a 7/10 since it's insanely fun but sometimes tedious and the dlcs are kinda annoying since it costs a lot in total if you want all the items, which to be fair are not required to have a good time though.
Perfect for ADHD and remember to quick save often. and remind your friends from space visiting that gravity is a thing
even with the tutorial i sometime dont know what to do and prepare for up to 3 minutes between Tutorial lialogs. its just waiting
This game allows a lot of creative freedom, especially if you use self imposed rules/limits or get mods to tailor your experience. It can sometimes feel a little empty sometimes, but to me that is made up for by all the cool things you can do!
This game is almost all of what I was looking for. I've described it as "minecraft for adults" in a tongue in cheek way of explaining to friends what it is.
If you are looking for a realistic-ish space/planet survival game with great destruction and where the only limit is your own creativity (and maybe the PCU limit!) then this game is for you.
It was great when it worked but now there's issues with the controller so I'm going to uninstall the game for good. Their generic BS fix doesn't work, they would need an xbox one controller to register as an xbox 360 controller to break the controls. Other then that it is a good game with lots of stuff in the workshop to add for spicing up the gameplay.
Love the game but the physic are the wonkiest shit ive ever encounter. I got stuck under my vehicle that i was standing next so i proceed to use my jetpack to wiggle out and it launched my car like 100 feet through base, destroyed part of my base, didnt hurt car. Then i put 5 drills and its front heavy no matter how long or heavy the counter balance is.
The best open world strategy game.... RUST and all others should be ashamed this one kicks
-Spawn in empty wasteland of a moon
-build a small base using the equipment of my lander
-build my first rover to find an area with resources for a main base
-crash the rover
-build a small base using the equipment of my rover
Boring. I keep installing mods, but nothing really replaces just how empty the game is. No procedure nor simulation outside of gravity. There isn't anything to build up to. The DLCs are barebones and mostly cosmetic.
988 hours, almost all solo, still going strong. If you like space and building/crafting you can't go wrong :)
LOL after so many hours and time since i bought that game i finnaly can review it! Its worth playing!
I don't know who in KEEN needs to hear this but if the Game has internet connectivity issues, it should NEVER "UNLOAD THE WORLD" AND DELETE WHATEVER YOU WERE WORKING ON FOR THE LAST 3 HOURS! FIX THESE KINDS OF DUMB ISSUES!
This game has brought me so many good memories/moments with friends. It is the true meaning of "Your imagination is the limit".
If you are looking to be guided in the right direction or have a story driven experience, this game is not for you.
However if you are looking for the perfect open world (or galaxy) sandbox adventure full of grinding to make small steps. This challenging experience really shines upon you.
The workshop support for this game is endless, the designs you can build are infinite, the only downside is that there is no water!
gud game, seriously, get it. if you like Highfleet, Check this out if its on sale.
TL;DR
Basically, this game was long term vaporware, and the next will be too. Don't bother.
Look into KSH's history as a company. They decided to never even bother finishing this game in favor of just starting another, just like they've done with their previous projects.
THIS GAME was supposed to be their big turnaround, but they don't learn, and most of the consumers don't either given the swathes of single sentence positive reviews.
Mods are the only reason to play this game.

This game *used* to have no *actual* PvE content, just a big 4.4 trillion km cubed box that came with marbles (planets) depending on world settings. You were supposed to make your own fun in the sandbox.. sometimes with the most awful grindy "survival" mode.
Now, there's lazy islands of little PvE content, which just feels like a rehash of the "tiered blocks" set of mods with the add-ons of EEM or RivalAI mods, but now it's forced on you by default. Yippee.
Updates were sparse and are mainly to sell block pack DLCs. Oh, and you can't use other people's creations if you don't have the DLCs. Oh, and if you lose internet connection for an extended period of time, you can't use the DLCs either. Oh, you see the DLCs in the buildmenu if you don't have them regardless and they take up space. Oh, and you can't craft DLC materials but they still take up space and-- do you see the problem here? The game is 20 dollars but to buy all the DLCs they're asking for another ~80$.
The game *can sometimes* be fun outside of that. Your first ten takeoffs from the planet out of the atmosphere is magical, but the effect wears off. That's it. That's legitimately the whole game. Everything from there is waiting for RNG to bless you with what you actually need.
You do not ever need to defend your "mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" ahh base, you do not ever need to worry about aerodynamics or re-entry or even water. Some of these things were promised, but just aren't coming with Space Engineers 1 anymore.
"Well, there's mods to fix that!" - and that's where it all skyrockets in quality. As it turns out, the modding community had decided to take this fixer-upper of a game, and just completely remove every complaint you could have about it. The arbitrary *thruster* speed limit of 100 m/s? Gone, and you can make it where small ships (fighters) go faster too. PvE is still butt? Fixed. The weapons being dogwater awful and only functioning within visual range? Yep. Lack of standard sci-fi defenses like cloaking and energy shields? Got it. Arbitrary build limits like none of THIS SPECIFIC CHAIR here or THAT specific cockpit there? So on and so forth. Mods are the only reason to play this game.
They haven't even presented a full first game and they make a second. It's long term vaporware
