calling this finished is a disgrace to all the game deves that balance or polish their games.
there are glaring flaws start to finish.
last time i checked the default key binding was a perfect example.
my play time kinda proves that i really wanted to like it

so much potential, but very bad optimized for new players. You need to invest a lot of time watching videos and reading to enjoy this game. If you searching for game to dive right in, this isn't for you

This has been my favorite game for a number of years, I've built anything from space stations, cities, Starships, Space Ships, War vessels, Land Rovers (literally body on frame land rover trucks), There does not seem to be any limit other then my imagination and engineering mindset. No other game is this much of a sandbox. It's getting long in the tooth, but it's been maintained marvelously. It is truly a forever game.

I want to give this game a thumbs up... but it has a lot of shortcomings and that's for both PC and Console editions. There is literally no galaxy to this game, just one single system. There is no energy weapons nor shields, the method to repair your builds is tedious and just a waste of time (add in a repair pad/bay/service/SOMETHING!), and for some reason literally every vessel you make can all travel at the same speed of 100m/s so there is no drive to have a variety of builds. Most players have to add in a bunch of mods just to get their fulfillment out of this game (and that means the game itself is severely lacking), and let's not mention that none of those mods are available on Console. Don't even get me started on the shitty ass player base that you will encounter on what is supposed to be PvE type of servers. Yeah, you think they are coming to help you learn how to play the game? Nope, they are just coming destroy what you built up and then hunt you down after you respawn... Nobody wants that and it put a huge sour taste in the mouths of players (and not just me). Either way, PC wise: It is easier to use a keyboard and mouse with how complicated this game's controls are. PC also allows the use of the mods... but other than that, I don't have any motivation to play this game because of all the above stated

The WORST UI I have ever seen in any game. Doing anything in this game at all is a giant pain in the ass. There is also gravity in space so it doesnt even really have the space thing going for it.

The engineering of building a spaceship or base and flying out to another planet or creating a space station is fantastic and unfortunately spoiled me to the point I have a hard time playing empirion galactic survival.

Sadly there is very little in the way of content beyond that. Multiplayer is a chore as stuff randomly flips and explodes. Something ends up not working right and losing you days if not weeks of progress. Any time I try to get back into the game I rarely get very far before these issues kill all my motivation. You can't even use the fun stuff like pistons and hinges without lagging out a server or pissing Klang off and destroying something. A lot of aspects of the game feel incomplete or like an after thought as well like combat and the slow ship speeds.

Sad part is that Space Engineers is not a game. It is more like a platform than anything else.

- Sure there are scenarios, but aside from the tutorial ones which are helpful at least, they are all linear and combat oriented. Far from engineering anything. So no point replaying any of them. You will probably get bored half way anyways as there is nothing to do in them nor anyone to talk to.

- The sandbox is empty. Minecraft v0.62 (the one I started playing with) had more stuff in it than the current version of Space Engineers. There is nothing to explore, nothing to find nothing to do. You have mods in the workshop that are more interesting than anything Keen came up with. Like Splitsie's Scrapyard... give it a few endings and it is a hundred times better than any of the scenarios or the sandbox of the vanilla game. No fauna, no flora, no alien lifeforms whatsoever.

- One of the worse parts... 100 ms in space! That is like moving at 1 km per week on Earth. I have no idea what Keen is doing but there should be no speed limit in space. Duh! Also, why is my engine humming loudly when it is turned off while I am at 100 ms? I cannot even say it is a bad game as there is no game in it.

- The DLCs are just reskinned things from the base games. Contact pack just adds more damage and such to the reskinned objects. Very lame dlcs that should just be patches instead. Very bad empty dlcs.

-Keen SH is also very uncreative. They cannot even come up with planets of their own. They need to take real world stellar bodies, vulgarize them, and put them into their game. Speaking of planets and moons, none of them in the game are plausible. They are all the size of asteroids. It is about 130 km from north to south (or vice vesa) on one planet. Moons are probably even smaller.

- The local star orbits the planets. Just to tell you how much Keen cuts corners. Which makes Space Engineer world feel silly.

- Building anything is a waste of time as you have no use for them. You can build a massive spaceship, but with the same blocks over and over again. So no worth your time. Also, once you have it, there is nothing to do with it. You cannot trade as there are no towns, spaceports, or even people to trade with. There is no economy whatsoever. You can build a starbase, but since there is no economy, it is useless. Same for bases. No point building anything in this game. Better play an old version of Minecraft than this empty shell. You will have more stuff to play with and you have endings while being a sandbox unlike this game which has none (on top of being empty as I have said).

As an example, I gave this platform a serious chance twice. Each time I have tried it, after I have built my third or fourth refinery (which should be called foundries as they smelt ores, poor english there on their part), I stop playing. I do not see the point. There is nothing else to do once you have begun smelting ore easily.

- Grinding. Since there is nothing to do in this game, it is full of grinding. You want a Smelter (not the basic one), you need 1200 of this, 200 of that (or whatever), and so on. Building a large grid vehicle, even a small one will take you forever to do because of the boring grind, even if you have several smelters and assemblers working. If at least there was something to do in the platform, you could say that it is just some kind of barrier, once I am done with this grind I can really start playing the game. But no. Empty. Void. Nothing to do with everything you build.

Keen cuts corners everywhere they can and proclaim they release something new with the cheap dlcs that should be content patches. But there is very little new in any of those dlcs and people are so gullible that they buy them, encouraging Keen to release crappy dlcs again and again.

What is worse, they are apparently working on Space Engineers 2, which is hilarious since the first is an empty shell with nothing in it. Man, finish your first game before you work on a sequel.

Do not buy at all. Not worth anyone's time until they make it at least as interesting as Minecraft... because frankly, it is a copy of Minecraft but with spaceship minus all the stuff that makes Minecraft fun and interesting... as well a the endings you have in that game. So not even on a bundle sale with all dlcs at 20 USD it is not worth it. Buy Minecraft or if you like building vehicles, From The Depths is far superior in every way when it comes to vehicle building. And if you are more an arcade game person, try Terratech. It is funny, exciting and pack with action.

It's complicated in the beginning, but REALLY fun, when you get the hang of it!
A very often used comparison is 'minecraft in space'. Well, OK, but not really...
You play your survival game mostly by building blocks, yes, but the planet you can (but don't have to) start on is actually round and can be flown around.
But what else makes it different from minecraft is, that there's a physics simulation and the stuff you're building could very well be a space station with the ability to move around.
Just because you build something, doesn't mean, that it'll be static forever.
There are moving parts available (pistons, rotors and hinges) to make your builds even morge interesting.
If you're interested, take a look at the possibilities via youtube.
The channels 'Splitsie', 'Zer0's Legion', 'JackRPG', 'Captain Jack', 'AndrewmanGaming', 'Lunar Kolony', 'LastStandGamers', 'Major Jon', 'Kelevra Engineering' and 'BlackArmor' help to get a understanding of the possibilities.
Go take a look and have fun!

Good game with great ideas and potential, held back by a slow-paced and short-minded dev team and their unwillingness to innovate and expand as well as update old mechanics (such as the ancient UI). Devs only care about pushing out overpriced and mostly aesthetic content packs. Each new update pretends to be massive while adding very little. Progression is really odd when you're not in creative mode, survival feels like a restricted creative mode while doing very little to help immerse you.

I'm so sick of seeing games like this be underutilized by the people who make them.

That was the least amount of fun I've had playing a game in a long, long time. I am the target audience for this type of experience and it is just terrible. Not holding a players hand is one thing, but this game is just downright not savvy or intuitive. Menus don't sense, object categories don't make sense, all text in the game is colored with the same palet as earthlike worlds so you can't see coordinates without struggling and straining. Constantly getting stuck against objects. Random undiscovered waypoints flickering in and out of view. Drilling for a real life hour to barely get started and then realize a single wind turbine isn't enough to juice anything, not even the starter refinery. Just, this was not fun at all.

With over 2000 hours spent in Space Engineers since its public release (over a few different accounts), I've experienced the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Despite the game’s foundation beginning to show signs of age, it remains a phenomenal experience, continuously improved by both the developers and an active, creative modding community.

If you’re looking for a game with a deep, immersive story, this may not be for you. However, there are plenty of mods that enhance the narrative side, offering more story-driven content. Where Space Engineers truly shines is in its gameplay, especially if you enjoy building, crafting, and experimenting with physics. While the base game offers a solid experience, mods unlock a whole new realm—introducing drag physics, water systems, food, farming, and survival elements that take the sandbox to the next level.

The modding community is massive, giving you unparalleled freedom to customize your experience. You can create the survival crafter of your dreams or build futuristic cities and ships limited only by your imagination. With weapon mods, survival mechanics, and public servers bustling with players, there's always something to keep you engaged. While solo survival can feel a bit lonely, the vast number of mods available—ranging from NPCs and hostile factions to advanced AI—help make even a solo game more dynamic.

Every game update is packed with new features, improvements, and bug fixes, ensuring the core game continues to evolve. There are optional DLC that offers cosmetic variations of existing blocks. These DLC packs are priced consistently and designed with balance in mind—none of the new items offer gameplay advantages, ensuring a fair playing field. Even without purchasing the DLC, players can still interact with the new blocks created by others in multiplayer, though they can't place or build them themselves. It's a smart and fair approach, avoiding any "pay-to-win" pitfalls.

Overall, Space Engineers delivers a fantastic sandbox experience. Whether you’re crafting alone or collaborating on massive multiplayer builds, the endless possibilities ensure that no two playthroughs are the same. With one of the best modding communities out there and constant developer support, it’s a game that remains engaging and rewarding for builders and creators alike. Highly recommended!

Has potential, but the cumbersome and time consuming process of moving ore from one device to another, the ridiculous menu system, the lack of easy drag and drop from one container to another is a killer! The save system is horrendous,, you save your game and 10 seconds latter you die and instead of being able to load your safe save game, the game overwrites your save to when you die!!!! so you have to constantly make several saves with different names to kind of be safe. No this game is a kill joy.

As someone who has played no mans sky, empyrion, and countless hours of factorio, I cant say space engineers meets the bar. Biggest issue is the very very slow startup. about 10 hours of my initial 12 was spent just mining rocks for small amounts of ore. Once I had enough, discovered I couldn't just build a floating ship as it needed cobalt, so I went and built a wheeled rover. Found and collected cobalt, but my rove flipped and I couldn't get it back up. Spent hours collecting resources to build my flying miner, which does ok but its still lacking. Frustrating that they bloat the menu's with DLC, rubbing it in your face of teh items you cant use, leaving very few actual things I could see to use. If you do choose to play this, do it with at least 4-6 friends to speed up the early game, otherwise try Empyrion If you want no mans sky with building, or go play Kerbal Space Program if you want realistic-ish space flight. The mechanics here are great, but other pieces of the game are severely lacking, and any game that requires DLC/Mods to fill the world arent good games.

Space Engineers is an outstanding game for fans of space simulations and engineering. Here’s why I highly recommend it:

Limitless Creativity: The game offers complete freedom to design and build space stations, ships, and bases across different planets. If you love engineering and construction, Space Engineers will keep you engaged for countless hours.

Realistic Physics: The in-game physics are impressively realistic, making every structure and mission a challenging yet rewarding experience. You can simulate gravity, pressure, and see how different materials and technologies interact.

Multiplayer and Co-op Missions: The game is even more fun with friends. The ability to work on large-scale projects together adds massive value to the overall experience.

Support and Mods: The developers are consistently improving the game, and the active community offers mods that extend the game’s possibilities even further.

I highly recommend Space Engineers to anyone who loves creativity, space exploration, and engineering challenges. It’s a fantastic game for science, space, and engineering enthusiasts!

Somehow in 2024 still getting good updates that don't completely outrage the community. Scratches a brain itch in the right way if you have a very specific type of autism. 1: you gotta like space, 2: you gotta like building space ships and space stations, 3: you gotta like factory automation, if you check all these boxes congratulations you'll waste upwards of 1800 hours playing Space Engineers

a fun game where you can (kinda) live out your space fantasies (this is neither Starfield nor the non-steam Star Citizen) whilst allowing you to build ships, stations, bases, ect.
multiplayer survival is recommended (preferably with a friend who is somewhat experienced with SE)

PROS: spectacular ships you can build (or from workshop), drones & AI, great modding community,

CONS: graphics for the planets can be underwleming (the focus is on the ships, not ground voxels),
building can be slow, the ocasonal ocurence physics-breaking phenominon known as CLANG (worshiped as a deity by members of the community), the ambient music, and space travel takes hours without a jump drive (or mods).

After 5 years they implemented a hint of a use for the stuff you built, and it's in some ways worse than what modders did years ago. The game can be somewhat fun in the sweet spot between getting used to the shitty UI maneuvering and finding out there is actually just nothing to do with your creations, but that's it.
If you want to argue that just the building itself is supposed to be the game you're basically saying the game costs like 85€
Since all the customisation you want for your build is locked behind lots of dlc.

And what is in the game is not worth that amount of money.
Just play a better game.

After a rather negative experience with No Man's Sky (i.e. dumped on a toxic world the first two go-arounds, then a fire world, all within less than 2 hours of gameplay), I took a look at Space Engineers as a possible way to scratch the itch of sci-fi survival crafting. Unfortunately, while I can sense a magnificent complexity to the game, it is a bit too dense for anything remotely approaching "casual" gameplay needs.

The pros of the game are pretty obvious. It has an amazing back-end in which you can construct ships, factories, and other structures that use an extreme amount of automation to actually simulate the complexity of realistic space travel. You can hotkey a lot of these processes, so that you actually have to flip hotbar switches, not unlike you see people do in sci-fi films when taking off, blasting into space, or activating weapons. There is a huge amount of versatility in building shapes and styles, so that you can construct personal craft (wheeled vehicles, atmospheric flyers, ships that only really operate in space, even automated drones). And there is a huge variety of scenarios, ranging from deep space asteroid mining to planetary "bootstrap" building. The graphics are pretty crisp and clear; while not as amazingly detailed as NMS, you're not here to watch procedural generation, you're here to build.

But this is where the main two cons come in. First off is the absence of any kind of useful tutorial system attached to any part of the game. There are some YT videos by the really dedicated users, but sadly many of those are already years (plural) old, and stop short of actually explaining some of the more complicated automation and programming issues between parts/systems of the game. There's just enough for you to basically equip tools, harvest the most basic resources, and then build a rudimentary base... then there's basically nothing to explain how to actually build a vehicle that you can keep recharging properly.

This leads to the second con: while the game has a lot of parts, there's weird "gaps" in which badly-needed elements simply do not exist. My experience here is the best example. When it came time to build a wheeled vehicle, the only way to really do this is with a battery block which requires recharging. (You could theoretically create a chemical rocket for propulsion, but it's... troublesome to do so.) Now, for flying vehicles, if you install landing gear for the vehicle and land on a "powered" base, the landing gear acts like a conduit and allows you to charge your vehicle's batteries.

But you can't do that with wheeled vehicles; for some inexplicable reason, wheels are completely cut off as a power conduit. So the only way to recharge them is to engage in extremely difficult, weird, contorted builds of both vehicle and base to try and couple the vehicle to an element that allows that vehicle to charge properly. It's very non-intuitive, very clumsy, and frustrating trying to figure out for someone coming in blind to how the system works. While this is just one example, I've seen other systems that have to be "jury-rigged" to work this way.

This gets worse with the third con: you are forced to create certain kinds of vehicles in order to find the rarer resources you absolutely must have to create advanced elements for actual space travel. Exhibit A here is Cobalt, which is needed for a number of fairly vital components/blocks. Unless you just get lucky, you really have to search for it using a sensor element... but that element fundamentally has to be attached to a vehicle capable of roaming around, because it is almost always a very, very deep depths under the surface of a world. If jury-rigging vehicles together is tedious, having to figure out the right configuration just to scout higher tiers of materials adds to the irritation.

There is no point reaching out to the community, at least not on Steam. My brief attempts to research these problems and overcome them indicated a mildly toxic community of people that utter variations of "git gud".

Frankly, I play games recreationally. I have neither the time nor patience to spend hours and hours trying to hack a game's mechanics to do something because the UI/UX is still shoddy after 10 years of development. And seeing how the community generally reacts to anyone trying to ask for help, it's clear the community isn't interested in helping grow the game, either.

TL;DR Space Engineers has potential, but is so unfriendly to new users you may as well just stick with No Man's Sky. The learning curve to make things work is prohibitively high.

[My honest review]

I’ve always enjoyed Space Engineers, but since the major 'Contact' update, I’ve been genuinely disappointed. Why? Because Keen Software House didn’t deliver the kind of content that might or may have been hoping for me and other player as well, but instead of new block features or more realistic atmospheric physics etc. We got prototype blocks, which feel underwhelming and lacking in utility.
What frustrates me more is, they are focusing on releasing paid DLCs instead of enhancing the core game. It feels like they’re pushing people to buy extra content rather than improving the whole gaming experience, which I find a poor way to maintain player interest.
Lastly, the Steam Workshop community seems to be outshining the developers. Creators on the Workshop are coming up with more innovative ideas and features than what was introduced in the 'Contact' update. In my opinion, the community content is far more engaging than the official updates we’ve been getting.

I've wanted to like this game for a looooong time. It just never reaches any of my check boxes, even though the trailers and adverts speak my language.

99% of the game is boring and Mind numbing. the fun parts from the trailers are after hours and hours and hours of mining, building and stress testing but the fights and events are over in a split second in comparison to how long it has taken me to reach this point.
(building can be fun, but it takes a masters degree to understand if your build will work or not)

its just not worth your time... unless you like a game to put you to sleep
I would like to put a Mid vote on this game, but as i can't, i'd have to put a NO as my review

I played this game a bit during early access and a short while after it released. I was originally very dissapointed with the release version because it remained unoptimized and filled with bugs. I didn't touch it for years until I watched a video of a capital ship crew on some RP server and noticed how the game changed significantly.
I booted it up and oh boy was I pleasantly supprised! The game runs smooth and network code seems to have been improved as well. The gameplay has been vastly improved and with the latest update I'm positive that if the devs keep this up they will eventually start gaining attraction again.

Fully recommended even at full price. All DLCs are cosmetic.

The game has an exceedingly steep learning cliff. I am climbing it slowly with help from YouTube vids of other's work. So far, it's a fun experience. I would recommend this if you are into having to think ahead a couple of steps to get the job done. I'm going to d/l the DLC to see if that helps with the learning cliff. The basic game has a lot of stuff for building, but there are more items that require the DLC content to access. It is what it is and I don't fault the programmers for this. They deserve to get paid for the work they have created.

This game allows you to build many different, cool vehicles and has several planets with different environments that encourages you to build vehicles that can roam them. My biggest problem with the game is that there are not many places or ships for you to encounter on planets. Also many cool blocks are in DLCs that you have to purchase, so you have to get really creative if you don't want to purchase them.

Space Engineers is less a game and more a digital canvas for your inner astronaut and engineer. It throws you into the unforgiving expanse of space and hands you the tools to conquer it. Build anything from humble mining shuttles to colossal battleships, sprawling space stations, and even planetary outposts. I truly love this game and, while the unbounded freedom it provides is awesome, the lack of any real opponent in the sandbox diminishes the sense of achievement.

Where it shines:
Limitless Creativity Unleashed: Forget pre-fabricated ships. Space Engineers' voxel-based building system lets you manipulate blocks with incredible precision. Hollow out asteroids to create hidden bases, assemble intricate contraptions with rotors and pistons, or design the sleek starfighter of your dreams. The only limit is your imagination (and maybe your computer's processing power).

Newtonian Physics in Action: This isn't some arcade space shooter. Space Engineers takes physics seriously. Every thrust, collision, and rotation adheres to realistic principles. Meaning? Improperly balanced ships will tumble end over end, and a poorly placed thruster can send your creation spiraling into the void. This adds a layer of depth and challenge, forcing you to truly understand the principles of engineering.

A Galaxy of Gameplay: While the game offers scenarios, they are fairly staid and trivial. True freedom lies in defining your own objectives and with those created by the community.

Which brings us onto modding mania: The Space Engineers community is a powerhouse of creativity, churning out a constant stream of mods. These add everything from new blocks and tools to entirely new gameplay mechanics, weapons, and even planets. Want to build a Star Wars X-Wing? Pilot a Battlestar Galactica? There's probably a mod for that.

Where it falls flat:
Complexity Can Be Daunting: Prepare for a steep learning curve. Space Engineers doesn't hold your hand. Grasping the intricacies of shipbuilding, resource management, and the game's various systems takes time and effort. Newcomers may feel overwhelmed by the sheer depth and lack of clear direction.

The lack of any serious challenge in the universe, the lack of any real story or hostile NPC's tarnishes the challenge and achievements you make. While mods provide NPC encounters and provide you with an opponent, there's no foundational mechanics in place which make this meaningful.

Better than boulders gate 3. In other words, the best game.

I have played many many hours in this game and in my opinion it is by far one of the best space games you could play! Heres a simple list of pros and cons to help me explain why I have such an opinion;

[Pros]
-The Building System, while its not perfect and has some annoyances.. Its actually really really fun making blueprints and ships roughly 30 to 50 blocks long!

-The Workshop, With so many mods to cover for this games annoyances and crafts that'll make you wish you were half as good at making.. there are limitless possibilities with this kind of community!

-The Combat, honestly the space combat is unbelievably fun and (In my opinion) far better than other games like Star Citizen. I can make my own ships to use in my own scenarios against enemies I hand crafted and will react to how I play! All while being able to hop on the game and get into it in minutes.
(I like solely using hydrogen thrusters because of the piping and fuel, then turn off inertial damps for combat to save on resources and it's really fun.)

[Cons]
-Survival, it is really slow to start out and kind of a massive pain to craft ships if you don't make a special printer station for it. (Which is why I like nanobot repair mod, saves on having to do that tedious work)

-No real goal, while its fine for someone like me who makes their own goals and has their own fun in sandbox and stuff.. For the majority of people, not having an end game or something is a serious issue. Even Minecraft has the End Dragon. Even if it isn't all that important or strong.. but because it is something to strive for, people can use that as something to achieve and add their own limitations to it like "How fast can I beat the End Dragon?" or "How little gear can I use to beat the End Dragon?" and such. Imagine if Space Engineers had naturally spawning bosses, bases, or AI factions that expanded in certain areas for you to fight against? Maybe something a little like "From the Depths" campaign..

-Optimization, while you might enjoy making a kilometer long craft.. I highly doubt you would be able to run a server where everyone has that kind of ship. Most the time you'll be extremely limited in ship sizes or else it would cause severe lag in the server.. For example my PC can only really handle about a group of people with ships around 25,000 PCU cost! Which is pretty small, around 40 blocks long depending on how the ships made..

But even still, I absolutely adore the game and highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys creating, crafting, and making stuff!

A great game to play with friends and family. Great for the creative mind and hard to criticize any aspects when it's customizible with mods. Only major issue is that the game fails to state track pads are not compatible.

this game is amazing.
why? because it lets you do anything, unless you don't have the slightest amount of creativity and perseverance.

This game is the best when it comes to having big ship battles. I do not have the patience to design cool looking ships so i just download 'em off the workshop. Best done with friends!

Pros:
I played this for over 200 hours on xbox, and already the disparity is obvious. This game is amazing on PC. access to the steam workshop allows far better modding, and the PCU limit (how many blocks you can have at a time) is doubled. I would absolutely reccomend this to anyone with a scrap of creativity.
Cons:
The atmospheric physics are simply nonexistent, although there are mods for that. Additionally, with a true behemoth of a ship, you need HUNDREDS of gyroscopes to be able to turn the vessel. Again, mods can solve the issue.

This game is amazing, much more fun as a group or at least with people in a voice channel with you. Basically if minecraft and starcitizen had a child. The develoipers are fantastic and the modding community is wonderful. 11/10 would recommend for all ages

Great game that respects your time without making things too easy. Stupid amounts of fun while failing and the playing with friends makes it even better. Especially as they laugh at your 6th failed attempt to make a rover.

The best way to enjoy this game is making your own goal, and getting to that goal in the most ridiculous way possible. Make a ship thats so big that your performance takes a hit. Make an entire gokart track for tanks and then nuke your friends with a homing missile ship.
