Awful. the camera angles are horrendous
this game is good not more than that, everything that should be changed: no sets the wave comes in same sizes unlike real life, the wave is very the same it doesent have sections and unique braking like in irl, not alot of surf spot, more surf spots should be added, more wave sizes there should be bigger and smaller waves implanted in the game like nazare, the wedge, shipstern bluff and more, chatching the wave is too easy paddling to catch a wave should be alot harder i can catch the wave even if the wave has 1minute to break and that is impossible irl, multiplayer should be added. overall this is a great unfinished game in my opinion it has great potential and the devs should improve it rating: 6.5/10
Great Game could really use some rag doll physics and everyone loves a bail button and maybe and option to remove the too deep auto respawn
Exactly the game I was hoping it would be. Beautiful, relaxing, it's smooth, it's fun, it's hypnotizing.
The controls are challenging to master but intuitive once you do. The waves are what gives this game personality; Hawaiian waves are giant, slow and terrifying, Chilean waves are more intense but not as large, etc..
I have always wanted to surf, this is the exact experience I hope it might be if I ever actually do. Although this game has endless waves, forever and ever; it's amazing.
I feel good after playing this.
This game could have potential, if we considered it to be in a stage of prototyping. Unless drastic changes to it's structure are planned to be done in the future I can't consider this to be a good surfing game in any sense of the word.
In order to be able to create a simulator that accurately portrays the aspects of the subject you aim to represent in your game, you need to have extensive knowledge on the matter, otherwise the product will be inconsistent across it's main elements. In this case, the game shows a lack of knowledge related to surf and, despite Waveor being a company dedicated to water simulation (the main element in focus in a surfing game), the wave behavior is far from realistic. Waves always feel too big, slow and all of them break in the same way. That's not how it works in real life, waves break in different ways, depending on things like wind strength, direction and sea floor type and shape. The focus is steered towards the white water particles and surface shape deformation and not enough on what really matters for a wave simulation to work (speed, shape variation and size). In real life one wave is not the same as another.
I can understand (very much so) that it is extremely hard to replicate such behavior in a video game but, for that exact reason, this can't be described as a "super realistic surfing simulator" because that is simply not true.
In the matter of the surfing it self, it can be easily seen how poorly those mechanics are built just by watching the animations and movement of the player controlled character. The character control feels too loose and sensitive and lacks the precise maneuvering that exists in a real surfing situation. The animations are extremely robotic and break the little immersion you can have provided by the pretty waves breaking (poorly) while you surf.
Several game mechanics are also lacking, you have poor implementation of objectives, content is extremely scarce, with no different gear and satisfactory customization options, and wave selection is also extremely poor.
I think surfing is far from being able to be replicated in a video game, tech that allows for accurate representation of surfing mechanics is not yet ready, which makes it a much wiser choice to try and build an experience that people will engage with, balancing realism and the arcade mechanics of a competitive video game. People want to feel like the product they spent their money on was a worth investment. They want to engage with it and feel like they want to come back. For that to work you need to make it fun.
At this moment a game like "True Surf", distributed on mobile platforms, for free, is much more fun to play than this "super realistic surfing simulator"(And it isn't a fantastic game). Kelly Slater Pro Surfer is still the best surfing game (albeit, one of the only ones) to have been released. It is still fun to play today and it was released almost twenty years ago.
I don't recommend buying this product, unless you really need to try it for yourself and can buy it on a sale at a lower price. This does not feel like a finished product, in any sense of the word and it's certainly not worth the price tag that it was put on it.
This game is fine. too expensive.
but one thing that must be in this game - vr mode!
I love this game I dont like the fact that free surfing is currently disabled and I wish they would find a way to add that back but currently I like the game a lot I got it 2 days ago and have played for 22.5 hours as of this review. I love this game can't wait for it to be out of Early Access
As a surfer of over 30yrs and a gamer since the beginning aka Castle Wolfenstein I know games and surfing and this game is frustrating! The ocean looks beautiful and the waves are done pretty damn well congrats.
Now to the chit...
The surfing is off! The board and surfer need more weight to bouncy and Skippy making the overall experience feel like chit imo.
The cameras oh my God are so damn frustrating yuck!
You kooks have the wave correct 90% now just mimic the movement and flow of Kelly slater pro surfer and you might have something. Right now playing this just makes me angry since the waves are pretty but surfing them F ME.
developers play ksps and incorporate the movement.
I was looking for something better than Kelly Slater Pro Surfer for PS2 and this is not it. It's very buggy and is basically a demo. The mechanics do not seem promising.
Hello to all or who ever this may concern.
There are a few "Cash Grab Games" out there on steam. and i'm feeling this might be another one of those games.
Whats a Cash Grab Game ? Well in the steam rules. You can get you're game on steam. People like us back them with our $$$. Steam rules is, The Developers are allowed to "Abandon" their game.
Just to name a few Examples. "The Castle Doctrine" or even "Edengrad" I could go on with more... But were not here to talk about those games. These are just Examples of some Cash grab games.
Now that we got that out of the way,Lets talk about "Virtual Surfing"
The game looks Fair when playing. And there is a'lot to be done in this game to be Finish. There are a'lot of games on steam that are "New" and under 20 $. and not Abandon for 1 year.
Last update on this game was on "April 6, 2019" Thus means were going on "1 YEAR for any updates" "Cash Grab"
Last update was "Major Physics Update - and other stuff too..." on Apr 6, 2019....
Now Be for you buy this game. I'll do a fast Run down for you.
there is "one" button in game "X" this X is what makes you Jump. or "Slide" Then you can, As the :Devs: Say..""You Can paddle"... Yes Paddle is R2 Key.
When Surfing. "Main Game" the Controls and View's are WAY off and make it almost impossible to play / surf.
the waves go no where in game. as if you were just a bobber floating in water.
you're character in game is all funny on his board when turning, floating, lying down...
i could go on with the flaws on this game. But as you see,It's in under EA. But were talking about "Cash Grab" 1 year for a update's. when you're game is this bad. and everyone is asking for a update. and you have been on the forms only Defending you're self how you're going to update. is just "fickle" = Changing frequently, especially as regards one's loyalties.
Out of 1-10 of game play, looks, style,
This game was fun for about 15-25 mins. As there is nothing to do in game. There is no Tournament's, No other Riders, No wild life , no beach, no people. just a blank slate of water. and yes you can go to a "new area" with Different colored waves with size.. with no Tournament's, No other Riders, No wild life , no beach, no people. This game feels broke or "Abandon".
Just because a mechanic tell you, you're car is coming along 11 months of him having it, does not mean it coming along properly. = Correctly or satisfactory...
This game gets a Easy 2 out of 10. i would give it a one, but i score it a 2. Do to the game running. This would be a great game, if it was worked on,Love the idea of surfing on the pc :)

Review Update After 3/11/2021
This Review i Did with a Video for you all to see first hand what were all talking about.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaQzAH4b7wk&t=5s
Update: 2020-05-24
TL;DR: definitely still not recommended. Most of the points in the original review still apply, except there is now a career mode, and the free surf mode has been disabled.
It's been another 6 months since my original review, and there have been some updates.
- Free surf is now completely disabled. Whut.
- Career mode has now been implemented. Some challenges are OK (like actual competitions, or trick objectives), but others are odd. One in particular is annoying: you have to pick up objects (called "mines") while surfing. These are just featureless polyhedrons that are unaffected by the rest of the world physics, and you can collect by mostly just surfing in a straight line. For something claiming to be a "simulation" that has an "ulta realistic mode", this is an odd choice.
- Board customization has been slightly improved: there are a few pre-selectable images you can select. It will still minimize the game and open a Windows file dialog if you attempt to select your own custom one, which can be unexpected. And if you change your board type, you lose your customization.
- Riding waves is slightly smoother; some of the bounciness is gone.
- Movement and view angles are still very frustrating. You're often left looking at the back of a wave, with no idea what your character is doing (are the standing up? facing the right direction?). There's no way to use your mouse to "look over" it. If you select first-person view, you'll be kicked out of it again the second you get off of a wave.
- Paddling is irrating: You cannot turn around without moving forward, and turning is annoyingly slow. It's impossible to paddle backwards. And you can't use your "W" or "S" keys to paddle; you have to hold down the right mouse button instead.
Besides that, the review below still largely applies; I've striked out everything that no longer does.
Original review
The requirements for what counts as "early access" have been abused here: this game is in no way in a playable state at all. This is not an early access game - it's a tech demo.
I've had this game for seven months now, since I was hoping there would be some updates, but despite claims from the developer in the discussions to the contrary, there has been nothing.
Problems
-
- Half of the selectable locations for "free surf" are disabled. Edit: free surf is now completely disabled
- There is a disabled main menu item labelled "Horse" for whatever reason. You'll see it every time you load the game.
- There is no way to change your key bindings, and the existing controls and sensitivity are clunky (although sensitivity is adjustable to a certain extent).
- The game looks beautiful, but movement is frustrating.
- Clicking "About" opens up notepad on your desktop.
- Loading a texture onto your surfboard is difficult: it pops up a file dialog in Windows

- The options menu has
Don't waste your time or money on this one.
Water and waves looks amazing. Unfortunately that's all this game has going for it.
The actual "surfing" is buggy and unfinished.
Got a refund. Might check back from time to time to see if they develop it into a game it should be.
Until then it is no where near the $30 AUD they're asking for.
This is the most realistic surfing game yet. The waves look amazing and it feels like you are getting tubed!
I feel like the waves need to move a little faster towards the beach and make the surfer a little heavier (you feel a bit like a bobbing cork).
But ultimately, this game is sick! I love it.
Controller support is iffy at best, no variations in waves, surfing feels "bouncy", I opted for a refund. Stick with a PS emulator and get Kelly Slater
Great looking game with lots of future potential. This is more of sim than a crazy high combo Tony Hawk style game. One request would be to add the option use a bodyboard. Doing 360's ,barrel rolls and even dropknee would be loads of fun on these waves.
Pretty Broken at the moment, Mouse and keyboard controls ok, camera movement is completely whack. Pretty tough to get a grip of, and scoring is broken in free play at the moment. There are a lot of cases where the camera becomes a huge issue. Maybe an automatic camera would be easier. Waves are somewhat ok, character designs feel very blocky, waves are alright, but there are better waves simulators on apps I've used. Sound isn't bad but definitely room for improvement.
At this current point in time I would not buy this game, but glad to see others trying to make a surfing game.
This is what we needed in a surfing game...Granted this is an Early Access title but what I have seen so far the Wave Engine is absolutely gorgeous!! Looking back to Kelly Slater Pro Surfer and its smooth graphics to even a bit further back TransWorld Surf and its allowance of such deep tube riding, Virtual Surfing elevates and combines all those options into a new level of surfing at your desktop utilizing today's GPU and CPU's capabilities and looks to be taking the new trophy for quite some time to come.....SURF"S UP!!
Nice Job Team!!
I have waited along time for this game and all I can say is WOW! This is going to be an amazing experience in gaming and you should be proud of what you have created already. I am looking forward to the future of this game. Finally a game that feels like Surfing, has the basic mechanics of what surfing is about. It looks great, nice atmosphere and loctions It handles great with my controller. Keep up the great work. A must buy for Surf Fans! ......Rip and Tear, Dude and Dudettes! If you ever dreamed of riding the endless wave, check this video out and then get this incredible game. They have made even more updates on this game, grab your sticks and let's go Surfing!

I think the game is off to a great start. I hope the developers continue to improve it. I'm worried that the small market size might cause the developers to abandon the game at some point.
I will not comment on the graphics, as my video card is on the lower end of the spectrum. With the settings I have, the graphics are OK by me.
I have been surfing year-round for seven years, have a graduate degree focused on fluid mechanics and even developed a first person surfing game (FPS, get it, haha). I did not attempt to release the game as after several rounds of tinkering with the physics to make it more realistic and enjoyable I realized the market would be really small and moved on to other projects.
So I am playing this game with an eye on core mechanics and physics simulation realism. I think the waves are great and the barrels look amazing. I'll never get out on waves like that in real life, and this is a good substitute. Seems like time is slowed down, but maybe it's my PC. I decreased the target frame-rate and that seems to help. I think the game needs a lot of optimization, as others have pointed out.
Surfer body mechanics are the weakest part, always taking out from the immersion. The board should be draggier in the water, no way it can overtake waves that size without a lot of footwork.
Waves are great, but it needs sections. Basically the wave breaks the same way to infinity, So there really is no point in simulating different locales if the wave does not behave according to the local terrain. At least add some randomness to the shape, make it flatter in some areas and steeper in others.
Camera needs a lot of work, a very easy way to improve would be to add a first person view. The controls are already similar to FPS (first person shooter this time) games, so it's not a stretch by any means.
In terms of features, I would like longboards and some mellow waves , maybe a crowded break like Waikiki beach.
Keep up the good work!
As a surfer, this is brilliant! It's still super early access but already loads of fun. Come across a couple bugs in campaign but looking forward to upcoming updates.
Game runs silky smooth at a locked 60 fps on gtx 1070 on gsync monitor.
Best to use a controller.
Graphics are pretty awesome already.
There is no tutorial and it took me a while to learn how to air. But it is satisfying when you do.
It's the first ever physics based surfing game. Pretty exciting!
I hope the dev adds random sections to the wave for floaters etc. Especially at places like Kirra. I did try going left at Kirra and was pleasently surprised. ;)
This is a great experience! Since it is early access with more features to come, a full review is not possible at this time.
Paddling is great, however, it would be awesome if we could turn as we paddle to catch the wave just right. I would also like to see accumulating points as you advance each session, bringing the player to challenges at each level which would increase your rank once you achieve each challenge. The virtual environment is phenomenal. This game is indeed promising!
