The game shines in its rich, immersive world, allowing fans to live out their dream of attending Hogwarts. From attending classes and casting spells to exploring secret passageways and taming magical beasts, the game captures the magic of the franchise beautifully.
Combat is dynamic and spell-based, with a variety of magical abilities and combos to master. The story is engaging, though not groundbreaking, and some characters feel underdeveloped. Performance-wise, the game had technical issues at launch, but many have since been addressed with updates.
Overall, Hogwarts Legacy is a must-play for fans of the Wizarding World, offering an authentic and magical experience despite a few rough edges.
Rating: 8/10
200 Hours of Magical Mayhem ✨
I spent around 200 hours in Hogwarts Legacy, and honestly? I’d do it all again just to wander through the halls of Hogwarts one more time. This game is gorgeous—like, stop-and-stare-at-the-sky gorgeous. Every corner of the castle and the world beyond is dripping with detail and magic.
The gameplay itself? Super smooth and easy to get into. Casting spells feels snappy, combat is flashy and fun, and flying around on a broom never gets old. But don’t be fooled—going for 100% completion? That’s where the real challenge begins. Some of those achievements had me thinking in circles. You’ll need a full wizard brain to unlock everything.
And oh, the magic. Whether it’s flinging spells in battle, brewing potions, or just watching the candles float in the Great Hall, everything feels like a love letter to the Wizarding World. Hogwarts isn’t just a location—it’s the heart of the experience, and it’s absolutely brimming with life and secrets.
If you’re even a tiny bit into magic, mystery, or just looking fabulous in wizard robes, this game is for you. It’s not perfect, but it’s a spellbinding ride from start to finish.
Final verdict: 9/10 – Would Avada Kedavra my social life again for this.
If you like harry potter you will enjoy it, i think that the best the game has to offer is exploring the world, hogwarts in particular. But the game in itself is very bland
TL TR: if you a big HP fan and/or like to explore open worlds with a lot of activities on the map. you definitely should play. If you a fan of interesting quests and stories, I advise to skip.
Pros:
- Open world. Devs put a lot of effort into recreating the universe, it is a dream comes to true for kids who were playing HP games in their childhood. Activities on the map are not super interesting, but they are good enough to keep you busy between the quests and they give you rewards. You also have an opportunity to see Hogwarts in different time of the year, and the world is super big.
- A lot of chests and clothes/gear. Ludo maniacs will love that.
- Battle system. It is extremely fun to combine the spells and smash the enemies. Even if you disregard black magic (I refused to learn Avada Kedavra and other spells). Furthermore, if you choose high difficulty and don't use potions, it can be relatively challenging experience (I had to retry fights, because the cost of a mistake is too high in such conditions).
- I liked the storyline of Sebastian. It is dramatic and it is not linear: you can make choices there. It ended with a flop though.
- I liked some Poppy quests, and Niamh Fitzgerald's Trial, as well as The Polyjuice Plot.
Cons:
- You start as a fifth year, and it is not really explained. I felt too privileged, because of this, and I think that prologue is missing in this case. It would be cool to at least choose your origin (like in Dragon Age or Mount&Blade) and start with the first year. Having flash-forward in this case would be reasonable. I simply don't like this Skyrim experience, when almost each NPC says too you "Oh, you are that mf who ..."
- Boring quests. I feel like the main story is not that interesting to be so long. Quests have no twists and turns: e.g. if your goal is to rescue a person, you will come to the place and do that, or the person is already dead, nothing additional or exciting. The only exception is probably "Minding Your Own Business" quest (buying a shop in Hogsmeade), but even that quests turned out to be so long it was a total buzzkill.
- No Quidditch. I consider it a vital part of the universe, and would like to see it even as something episodic.
- Antagonists don't have charisma, they are very plain.
- An illusion of choice. In a lot of cases you have two options of a response with an opposite meaning (e.g. being kind or rude), but it doesn't matter much, what you choose. If someone asks you a general question, the outcome will be the same: You say "No" and hear "Lol, let's just do it, come on", and then you have to do it even if you refused.
There are only a few exceptions.
Love this game! The first one I ever 100% completed, that's how much I loved it! The only negative thing I have to say about it is that it has very little replay value (with the exception of one quest). But, in my opinion your first experience with this game will absolutely make up for that! A must-play for every Harry Potter fan!
I liked the exploration, there are legitimately gorgeous looking scenery in the game. I also liked how what they did with the Hogwarts Castle and some touch of references to the HP films.
It's Avalanche Studios so I expected great things to be delivered for open-world exploration department, which they excellently did so.
For the story, it was rather meh. Could've been better. Highly recommended if you're itching for open-world exploration game, and if you wouldn't mind repetitive puzzles and an average story.
***Trigger warning - Transphobia***
Everything was going FINE until they had the GALL to mark the magical beasts as either male (yuck!) or female. Like HELLO?! It's 2025. And don't get me started on the breeding mechanic. Putting male (again, yuck!) with females AUTOMATICALLY equals offspring? Assuming the beasts aren't gender non-conforming or queer is actual cisgender propaganda. I LITERALLY CANNOT EVEN RIGHT NOW.
Petrificus Totalus and Diverse Vivariums
By a Hufflepuff Who Made Stealth Look Cozy
For me, Hogwarts Legacy wasn’t just a nostalgic journey through the Wizarding World — it was a tale of perseverance, spellcasting, and quietly Petrificus Totalus-ing every living soul in a goblin camp like a polite magical assassin.
Despite being single-player, it feels alive, the plot is engaging, the side quests are genuinely fun, and the characters feel more than just set dressing. From duels in dark dungeons, killing your first troll with Avada Kedavra, to sneaking around castles under Disillusionment, the game offers a satisfying mix of action, mystery, and “oh wow, I didn’t know that was there” moments.
Although my go-to build involves sneaking into a room, freezing everyone silently, and walking out like I’d just delivered a warm apple pie. The combat is a highlight as well. It’s the kind of magic that makes you feel clever — or at least very smug.
The world itself is beautiful, brimming with detail and crafted with the kind of care that only a true fan base deserves. From Hogsmeade’s cozy chaos to the vast Scottish Highlands, it’s clear this was made for people who grew up waiting for their letter. Mods and post-launch updates (like Quidditch!) only deepen the experience, making it everything a Harry Potter fan could hope for.
And yes — I’m a Hufflepuff. Loyal, kind, and apparently terrible at flying. “The Sky is the Limit” quest nearly broke me, but when I finally finished it — with actual flying colors — I felt like I’d earned my place at Hogwarts.
Final Score: 9.5/10
Cast spells, explore every corner and if you're not singing "Gotta Catch 'em All" are you really even a Hufflepuff.
This is one of my all-time favorite games! I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and I feel like it did the world justice. The game is just so beautiful and fun. I wish there were expansions or patches that would add some more content, but I love just wandering the world even after I've completed all the quests. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves the Wizarding world. <3
amazing game just because of professor garlick existence. i rate this 9/11.
The game is kinda fun and open world. You can do a lot in this game, it's really succeeded in a lot of ways at becoming a full-on wizard simulator.
But the biggest issue I have with the game is a narrative game play. It's disruptive with tutorials for new things in the middle of the story. My main quest objectives were things like, "Collect a fuzzy animal and save it from poachers so you could put it in a pet museum and get ingredients from it." and scenes like this where I kept being forced back to visit the room of requirement felt like the game "Required" me to learn this stuff through a tutorial when players could figure things out intuitively. All the tutorial-side quest missions for growth felt like a solution for a different problem, mainly powering up through quests.
I also think the spell organization system is a bit wonky, but it works. I'm completing the game out of necessity, but I had 50 hours invested before the narration in the game itself killed my interest.
A fun game that truly captures the magical Harry Potter atmosphere. However, I wouldn’t call it deeply immersive—the story feels predictable, and most aspects play out as expected.
I really enjoyed the potion-making system—it’s great that all the junk collected throughout the game can actually be used for alchemy. But when it comes to the campaign, quests felt too repetitive. At times, I barely felt like I was even attending a magical school.
I was hoping for more interactive lessons—not just "show up, learn a spell, leave." A real seasonal academic experience with class breaks, mystical investigations into professors, searching for hidden secrets in Dumbledore’s hat, or even discovering a skeleton in a classmate’s closet would have added so much more depth. Instead, I find myself installing mods just to make things more engaging.
I wouldn’t say the game deserves a negative review, but it’s definitely a one-time playthrough rather than something long-term. P.S. To see the ending, you have to grind levels, which feels a bit unnecessary.
Even though I don't play RPGs very often, I'm really glad I decided to give Hogwarts Legacy a chance. The main plot, along with the companion quests, was genuinely engaging. Side quests were fine, nothing special, but still fun to do and a good way to gain some XP. The graphics are amazing. It might be the most beautiful game I have ever played. I haven't encountered any serious bugs. I can honestly recommend it.
I quite enjoyed playing through Hogwart's Legacy. Exploring the school and finding so many Easter Eggs for fans of the books and movies was quite fun and I enjoyed all the spell casting and flying on my broom around the surrounding countryside a lot. A more robust potion crafting experience would have been nice, but the game really met my expectations and I'm glad I "spent a year" at Hogwarts through this game. An easy game to recommend to fans of the Wizarding World!
Decent game if you stick to the main quest, the world gets extremely shallow if you try to do any of the bonus copy-pasted objectives/side-questts. Get it on sale but don't pay the full price for it.
Absolutely Amazing Game! Thank You to EVERYONE that had a hand in making it!
The Detail is Perfect, The Story is Amazing!
GamePlay could have a small adjustment here and there in terms of mechanics Flying , but still incredible to the point of barely noticing.
The animals/magical beast are on point! Beautiful and extremely well designed.
The sound effects and voice acting is incredible and immersive to the point it feels like I'm truly there in game.
Hogwarts Castle is so well done it feels like it was pulled from my imagination.
The Forbidden forest is so incredible and alluring that it actually provides an ominous feeling.
The map is so ALIVE and vibrant, it's just stunning.
I have had no issues in that capacity game play wise or other etc, it has been a smooth and fun ride.
The Game itself truly truly felt like coming home.
Game Mods are also Awesome.
Fully and Completely Recommend playing it!
I picked the game on launch, made it pretty far but couldn't finish it. I randomly saw they implemented mods inside the game itself, making it very easy to pick and enable them. Made me come back to the game instantly.
The base game is very good but leaves a lot to be desired. The story is great but I have a huge problem with the difficulty. The game is a walk in the park even on the highest difficulty. It can also benefit from a bit more content and a lot of QOL.
This is where the mods come in. The ingame implemented mods are amazing, there's a huge variety and they address pretty much every issue I've had with the game, even the difficulty to a degree. They also add more spells, more talents, more interaction with other characters, turns the game from great to amazing.
I'd give a properly modded Hogwarts Legacy an 8.5/10.
And here comes the "but"... Enabling any mods disabled achievements... In a single player game... That has mods implemented inside the game... That's why I have almost no achievements after 129 hours in the game and 100% completion on every single part. By the time I realised that (since I was already level 32 out of 40 on my first save) I was deep enough to just want to finish the game now. But if I knew this from the start, I might have not come back.
If you don't care about steam achievements, it's a 7/10 game unmoded, 7.5/10 if you prefer an easy game with a good story. Mods take it to 8.5/10. But I can't recommend it until they fixed the achievement interaction.
Horrible performance. Absolutely terrible. I played this in 2023 and it was ok but when I came back in 2025 I was shocked. The stutter is unbearable, the game is unplayable
I know posting a review at this time is kinda useless, but i really spent my time to play the whole game and read the lore outside of the game and here is my point of view :
Rating: 50/100
This game survives on graphics and fanservice alone. Strip those away, and what’s left is a shallow, repetitive experience wrapped in nostalgia.
• Story? Bland and predictable. No twist, no emotion, no soul. The villain is forgettable. You’re the “chosen one” simply because… you are.
• Dark Arts? Laughable. Avada Kedavra can be cast in front of professors and classmates, and nobody bats an eye. There are no consequences, no morality system.
• Combat? Just flashy spam. No real depth, no real challenge, and enemies are brain-dead.
• Music? Copy-paste. It lacks personality and doesn’t match the magic this world deserves.
• Side quests? Filler. Long and empty, just to stretch playtime.
• “Hidden content”? Four house robes, scattered behind chests. That’s it. No hidden weapons, no real rewards.
• Moon Statues & Alohomora? Gating a basic utility spell behind 30 scattered collectibles is not “progression” — it’s artificial time-wasting. Zero engagement.
• Broom racing? Feels like flying in a fish tank. Limited height, speed, and zones. No freedom, no thrill.
Hogwarts Legacy is a castle full of visual wonder, but empty inside. A one-time tourist trip, not a meaningful adventure.
I played this game so much, but after the mod upgrade I can't even play. Every time I try, a pop up tells me that I can't load because of a mod. I have deleted all mod files, uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times, but nothing works. This is very disappointing due to the amount of hours I could play it previously.
Hogwarts Legacy devs decided to remove third party mods like from nexus or else the game will not start or crash. Very disappointing and just overall stupid decision. Game was perfect and now you shit on it and all of your customers.
Love this game, so many things to do, side missions etc. Design is amazing and I like the story line. I don't play many games and I'm picky but I really love this one!
Putting aside the controversy of the author and her personal stance in life, the game has courted a lot of notoriety when it first came out. However entering it with an open mind and judging it by its own merits, you will find that the development team has done justice to the world of Hogwarts and its ip in all its glory.
If you ever wanted to feel what's it like to be part of the magical world of Harry Potter this certainly delivers I'd dare say its among the better literary to game ports you'd find of late. The gameplay is good and even for someone who don't like combat much or action platforming or broom racing, I did find it all ties nicely to the theme and game. The pacing is good, it slowly teaches you the spells, and the progress of unlocking the world is done in a systematic and well thought out manner. The main story is an interesting one, its nothing fantastic but is in line with the theme and of good vs evil and prejudices between goblin and human kind with regards to magic. There's plenty to occupy you throughout, from Merlin trials, to collections to complete, to puzzles and secrets to unlock. for any OCD out there you'd be salivating throughout and for completionists can be quite a chore, especially with a few of the achievements which makes you repeat the game. So try it out and you would find this would tide you away lost in a fantastic world of magic, wonder and childhood delight, at least for a time.
Wandering freely through Hogwarts feels like stepping into a dream. The world is immersive, the story is captivating, and the side missions scattered across the map make exploration genuinely enjoyable. The main story is especially well done and every moment feels magical.
That said, going for 100% completion on Steam does start to feel repetitive and a bit tedious after a while. Still, for fans of the Wizarding World, this game is absolutely worth experiencing.
Ive had game for a while, since it was on sale a few months back. On install, there is an OPT OUT option on data mining and selling your data. Reading deeper, it mines and sells keystrokes, mouse movement, ads you interact with, websites, KEYSTROKES!!!!, The OPT out site is 3rd party, still need to agree to the opt in to play game. They claim they will delete any sold data linked to your email.
Due to this, I immediately uninstalled game! Cannot play game with this type of data mining imbedded inside. Doubt ill get a refund since its been owned for more then 2 weeks. If this is how WB does business, Ill never purchase another WB game again. Sad, I really wanted to play this game.
Exploration, graphics and collectibles are high quality. Sadly the main story has very poor pacing and very little is explained, it's looping around the trials while repeating the same lines over and over about how this situation is bad indeed. Some of the side questlines are better than the main one to be honest.
This game had such huge potential, and so many people growing up with the Harry Potter series like me probably couldn't wait for it to come out - only to see how childish, repetitive, and unfortunately, quite boring it is. I've tried playing this game, I think three times, and each time, after a few hours, I just uninstalled it.
Let's start with spells. This game is literally about the wizarding world and magic, so I was thinking (probably not only me) how many amazing spells we would be able to use here. Nope - you get like 20-something spells. With bugged mods, you can probably get up to 30. And they're nothing special. If you thought you’d be able to become another young Dumbledore, you're wrong. If you thought this game will beat Skyrim's magic system, you're also wrong. Huge disappointment.
Enemies - nothing special. But that's on me, because personally I love games where I can duel with powerful, human enemies or climb up a ladder made of them, starting with lower bosses and continuing through the game, fighting more and more powerful ones. I had high expectations and can only blame myself for thinking that once I finally got to play a game set in the Harry Potter world, I’d get to face some interesting villains similar to Voldemort or Grindelwald. But no - it's just mean goblins and not-so-evil tiny little poachers who are no match for a fifth-year Hogwarts student and get killed like flies.
Repetitive missions and side "jobs" (because they surely can't be called quests): Merlin Trials, those f***ing moths, doors with symbols and other buggers. Reminds too much annoying MMORPG quests like go collect 15 flowers or kill 20 bats. Main quests? Once you did the first trial, you can be sure the rest will be exactly the same, with just slightly more difficult puzzles to solve or bigger stone knights to defeat. Uninteresting.
Last but not least - Hogwarts, praised by many, but in my opinion, it’s just weird and not how it was described or how it should be. From the outside, it looks magnificent, just as it should - after all, they had eight movies and plenty of iconic scenes to draw inspiration from. But inside, it often feels like a strange mix of clashing styles from different eras. In the parts of the castle where they had to design things themselves (instead of directly copying from the films), it ends up looking more like some kind of Rothschild palace from the 18th century. Just weird and out of place.
Shortly, in my opinion this game doesn't have a soul. Very disappointing.
Not a Potter fan, but i like this game, loads of fun and stuff to do, hope they do a second one but this time in the modern era.
its a great game. ive played it at least 5 times each time a different house!! so cool seeing each of the houses and how they are all so different yet all beautiful in their own way. and the game play is great very immersive!
Not a Harry Potter fan – still loved it!
I went into Hogwarts Legacy with zero attachment to the Harry Potter universe. Never read the books, barely watched the movies. That said, I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this game.
The story was decent—not groundbreaking, but solid enough to keep me engaged. What really hooked me, though, was the gameplay and the world itself. The spellcasting feels great, combat is fluid, and the sheer amount of things to explore and interact with made it hard to put down. Hogwarts is packed with detail and secrets, and I found myself constantly distracted (in the best way) just roaming around.
Even without the nostalgia factor, this game stands strong. If you're into action RPGs with a rich, interactive world, definitely give it a shot.
9/10 – Would recommend, even to fellow Muggles.
I recommend this game, it's a fun experience with a vast open-world concept. I do have a few complaints, like most of the missions take place outside of Hogwarts castle, and the voice lines can be repetitive when you enter Hogsmeade, when you go to buy items, etc. however it is not enough to make me stop playing. I do have my minor gripes but at the end of the day, I love playing this game. Very entertaining with a fun story line and cool upgrades you can have for your character.
Hogwarts Legacy is a visually stunning game that fully captures the magic and atmosphere of its setting. Exploring Hogwarts and its surrounding areas is an absolute joy, with incredible attention to detail that really brings the world to life.
However, while the world design is top-tier, the storytelling falls a bit flat. The story is just straight up boring, lacking the emotional depth or memorable characters that could have elevated the experience. The dialogue is particularly weak—often sounding stiff and robotic, which further disconnects players from the narrative.
Gameplay is solid, with fun spell combat, exploration, and customization options that allow you to feel like your own witch or wizard. The various side activities and secrets scattered throughout the world help make up for the story's shortcomings.
Despite its narrative flaws, Hogwarts Legacy delivers an immersive and beautiful experience for fans of the Harry Potter universe.
Rating: 6.1/10
I enjoyed this game at first, but then I realized just how repetitive it is. It's a by-the-books Ubisoft style open world game with tons of puzzles all across the map and spamming Revelio every 10 seconds. The combat is pretty fun though, even if it is simplistic.
Admittedly, I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but even if I was, I'd still be disappointed because you spend most of your time outside Hogwarts (which is really beautiful by the way) and you don't really 'feel' like a student. The rest of the map is dull and boring. The story is also pretty forgettable. At least the graphics are really good.
32 GB of RAMS, settings are all low with decent specs and the RAMS usage increase from 15 GB to 32 GB in about 20 mins of gameplay and then boom, the game crash. Try a lot of thing and nothing works so far. Sad to see an above average gameplay and story in a buggy game and all the thing the devs care is mods, not the game itself is funtional.
If you really want to buy the game, wait for it to be $10 or less because that's about what it's worth.
Capitalizes on the popularity of the Harry Potter franchise. Graphics and sound design are good and what you'd want in an open world Harry Potter game. The problems with this game are the story, difficulty, puzzles, gear, achievements, and more.
The story is just plain boring and the dialogue options have no effect on the outcome of anything. Forget trying to roleplay as anything with the dialogue.
The progression and difficulty in the game is one of the worst I've seen from high production value games. There is no sense of getting stronger against enemies in this game and instead, they all scale to your level no matter what. This leads to the problem of the hard difficulty always locking every enemy to 3-5 levels above you. Forget doing side quests to feel stronger against enemies in the main story, the fights will always take the same length no matter what.
The puzzles are interesting the first few times you find a new puzzle but once you've seen all 4-5 varieties then you get tired of it all. It doesn't help that the puzzles give you pages which is the easiest way to get XP that I've found on my own.
The chests drop gear at your level forcing you to keep opening chests to get better gear. There's nothing special about the gear other than bigger number gives more armor/damage.
The achievements are abysmal. "Collect all the things we scattered around the map to waste time" "Play through the entire game in each school to waste more time" "Do this mundane task an arbitrary amount of times to waste more time"
So far, a good game.
I haven't tweaked the graphics settings and just let the game decide for itself what it wanted to do, and the PC runs very cool indeed. The game is a little glitchy here and there, and I suspect that's it loading in stuff in to the graphics card as you wander about the map. It's a huge open world, so not surprising.
Controls, menus, and so on, are all good, with everything laid out in a sensible way. If I have one criticism it's that the skill menu is clearly for a console controller and should have been adapted for the PC. It is annoyingly limited and restricts how many skills you can access.
The game itself is like a traditional mmo without the other players! In fact, so much so, I am surprised they didn't go the extra step and make it an mmo. There are are quests you have to complete and your level and skills rise as you go along. There is a interesting background story you are trying to uncover. The game starts gently and is relatively slow pace, but if you are into the Harry Potter world then it's all fun. I'm looking forward to later stages of the game.
After a mere eleven hours, I have spend most of my time doing basic quests, exploring the school and the local town. Mostly, it's a gentle game and If you like that sort of thing, then there is a lot to do. There is some combat, but not that much so far, and that's fine by me.
Highly recommended!!
This game is like a sheet of cookies that was pulled from the oven too soon. It has the foundation for greatness, but falls short.
Special mention goes to the abysmal voice actor for male player characters. Sebastian Croft sounds like he would have rather received an ice pick lobotomy than voice the player character.
It is also rather funny how hard this game tried to court an audience that was NEVER going to buy this game. I don’t have to mention what demographic it is. You already know what features/additions I mean and what that demographic was.
A soulless game that sold well solely because it uses one of the most popular IPs out there. It's not really an RPG and is horribly unoptimized, with intrusive Denuvo on top of it.
Open World 3rd Person Adventure Action RPG.
+ beautiful graphics
+ Hogwarts itself looks and feels amazing
+ first 10 to 15 hours when everything is fresh and new
- boring story line and quests (main and side), only 1 side quest (Sebastian) was interesting and should have become the focus of the game as that side questline felt like the Harry Potter movies (1 to 3)
- too much repetition (quest and fights)
- world is too empty, to much focus to expand and bloat that world. They should have focused only on Hogwarts, Hogsmead and the Forbidden Forest
- you find every 5 minutes new clothes, they feel not rewards
- NPC have stiff faces no emotions
- No Quidditch games are in the game to participate in.
- No real school class mechanic like in the Bully game to balance attending classes and learning spells and balance it out to find out a typical Hogwarts school year mystery
I can only recommend this game at a deep sale. The first 10 to 15 hours are amazing and than it becomes a typical ubisoft like empty world collection task.
Forced consent is not consent.
The game can no longer be played without "opting in" to data collection.
Can I refund? Probably not.
Can this be changed with enough backlash? Maybe.
Declining to "opt in" will take you to a form that doesn't work.
Steam needs to intervene and remove this shit.

cannot for the life of me get past the seizure warning screen, game keeps crashing after launch. was so pumped to play it after finishing the download, but the hype died in a matter of 30 minutes. reinstalled, disabled firewall, added exception to windows security, checked video drivers, deleted certain folders reddit told me to try, nothing works. very unfortunate
On certain PC configurations the graphics menu will be completely blank preventing you from changing any graphics related options. This bug was supposedly introduced in the modding update and hasn't been fixed yet. The devs have acknowledged the bug but have gone radio silent on the issue since.
Until this absolutely massive game breaking bug is fixed I don't recommend this game to anyone. I have refunded my purchase until this is fixed.
your choices don't actually affect the outcome, and the game keeps crashing every time i try to use ancient magic on a boss.
Review after finishing the main story. TLDR, the story's good and the atmosphere is great. I found the game itself tedious. If you are a Potterhead and are looking for a good story, this has that.
My main gripe with the game is that it feels like at some point this was intended to be an MMO. And then later on, they decided they were not going to be able to do that so made it single player instead. There's side quests everywhere and tons of world to explore if you are into that. There is also a huge 'checklist' style approach to things to do in the overworld. There's a big emphasis on cosmetic items as well. For many people, these things are a draw but for me it just makes me tired. I didn't find much actual good reason to go out of my way to explore as all of the 'impressive' things you can find are level adjusted gear that you'll replace in a few minutes.
They did try to gate some things behind exploring. I really wasn't into this either. The worst example I can find is that your inventory slot count is tied to how many optional Merlin trials you seek out and complete in the overworld. Having limited inventory slots means that you have to stop what you are doing and arrange your inventory right in the middle of doing something more fun. Capping that and hiding the larger caps under optional things to seek out and find is certainly a choice that they made in this game; and I'm not here for that.
The story is pretty good though. The setting is prior to all of the other Wizarding World stuff I am aware of in the 1800's. You are starting the game as a new student at Hogwarts starting in their 5th year. They did find in-game justification for the world exploration checklist and map system, which I thought was cute. Hogwarts and the surrounding area are really well done too. I actually did get lost in Hogwarts a few times.
Combat is a bit like the Batman Arkham games, but you are approaching it as a wand-weilding wizard. You'll get dodge/parry prompts around your head, there's stealthy spots, you can see through walls, and sometimes you'll need to match the right spell to the right enemy action. I felt like it was more than a bit easy though. The main story has a pretty high amount of combat to go through.
So in conclusion, there's a lot for a person who is really into Harry Potter. Its getting a no from me.
They intentionally broke the game for """unofficial""" mods and only allow their curated garbage. Very anti-consumer.
I am not a die hard HP fan, but do enjoy magic and all the HP series had to offer. It was nice in the game to walk around Hogwarts, and chase the flying books, and ride your broom around, learn spells and attend classes like your really in the school. The games allot of fun, somewhere down the line tho, I just couldn't commit to it. If you like open world, and flying, and questing, and choosing dialog I defiantly would buy.

As Harry Potter fan — yes, I would recommend it. Walking around Hogsmeade, exploring Hogwarts and casting unforgivable curses, it was fun and cool. I enjoyed my time here.
But as RPG with open world fan — I wouldn't recommend it for the full price. If you buy it on sale, it might be worth it. Game looks flat and superficially, it missing some work in details about NPCs and world in general.
But 8/10 as I love the idea of Harry Potter world based game without Harry Potter (finally). I appreciate them trying to do completely another story in this universe but it needs more work to be done. I hope they're gonna try harder on the next one.
As a long-time fan of *Hogwarts Legacy*, I am extremely disappointed with the recent 01/30/2025 patch update. The game has always had its issues, but this update takes things to a whole new level, and not in a good way.
First and foremost, the developers have completely disregarded what was stated in the Terms and Conditions during the installation. The clear promise that players’ personal information (like age, gender, or email) would remain private has been completely violated. Now, not only are players being forced to sign up for a WB (Warner Bros) account, but we're also required to link it to the game and the CurseForge mod website. This feels like an invasion of privacy, especially for a single-player RPG game. No one wants to give up their personal data for something that was perfectly fine without this forced integration.
But the worst part of this update? The mods. *Hogwarts Legacy* was one of the few games that kept the modding community alive. Mods were the saving grace for many players who wanted a more personalized experience. Now, because of WB's restrictions, many mods are no longer available through the in-game mod menu. A ton of beloved mods are completely gone, and the mods that remain are now monitored by WB. This is a terrible decision that effectively kills the game’s creative freedom and fun for many fans.
To make matters worse, the mods that i had been using before the patch are now completely broken, which essentially ruins the game for a lot of us. What was once an exciting and engaging experience is now hindered by intrusive requirements and restrictions.
In summary, I’m extremely frustrated with this update. The forced WB account integration, the destruction of the modding community, and the invasion of privacy are all bad decisions that have completely soured my experience. I urge the developers to listen to the community and reconsider forcing players to sign up for accounts and restrict modding in such a heavy-handed manner. Forcing players to share personal data just to enjoy a single-player game is not only unnecessary but also frustrating. Please, bring back the freedom that made *Hogwarts Legacy* enjoyable in the first place.
A mile wide and an inch deep. I really wish I liked this game more than I did. The long collection quests have no satisfying completion and you feel let down after searching for hundreds of hidden items only to get a minor reward. The battle is fun, but becomes very repetitive. The character quests feel like they they would have happened the same whether you were there or not. Finally the classes, which were one of the reasons I wanted this game, were over after one session.
