Harry Potter was childhood, and is still a comfort-universe for me. Much is lacking in terms of RPG in this game however.
CONS:
Choices don't matter: You can influence the tone to a degree, but that is all.
No companions: Very lonely in that you don't get a group or party to run around and cause mischief with, but rather have companion side-quests one at a time with only one other student. (This was the biggest let-down for me, personally)
Quidditch being cancelled in the main game but now is a DLC is most unfortunate.
Dialogue and animation during dialogue: Smiling while someone is telling you something tragic breaks immersion. The dialogue is not bad, but it doesn't acknowledge enough events that warrant commenting on. There just isn't enough of it, which ties in with the "No companions" point.
Story (one aspect): Much of your character's origin is a question mark.
The Merlin Trials: This would not be a con if it wasn't the only way to get more inventory space.
PROS
Environment: It is everything, and the game really shines here. Hogsmead, Hogwarts, and the Forbidden Forest, right out of the books. Instantly immersive and lived up to expectations.
Ambience: Sounds, ambient conversations, music, and weather all consistently contribute.
Worldbuilding: Consistent with lore. Great to see some characters like Ominis Gaunt and Olivander show up. Magical beasts being a thing as well the room of requirement showing up was a pleasant surprise during first play-through.
Gear: Craftable and upgradeable gear is always nice when it is done in a way that is not resource-intensive or grindy.
The aesthetics are also awesome for the different kinds of clothing, and add further to the immersion.
Quests: Companion missions are actually fun and fulfilling, even if they might not impact the ending. You can choose to ignore many of the small-village specific ones, but there was this one quest; Where you purchase a shop in Hogsmead then end up going down a rabbit hole of horrors that left me giddy as I was not expecting it and would have never seen it coming.
New concept: I liked the introduction of "wandless magic" as part of a completely different wizarding culture located in the African continent, in the school called Uagadou. I wish there was more about it. While the mention of other schools of magic is canon, only Durmstrang and Beauxbatons were mentioned by name in the initial series, with little information about how they differ from Hogwarts beyond Durmstrang being more "dark arts" inclined.
Every now and then I come back to this game just to kill some trolls, slay some inner demons, and ride my hippogryph into the sunset.
A Beautiful Yet Shallow Dive into the Wizarding World
Hogwarts Legacy invites you to step into the shoes of a wizard or witch in the late 19th century, delivering a visually stunning and magical experience that captures the atmosphere of the Harry Potter universe. From the moment you enter the Hogwarts grounds, it’s clear the developers poured immense effort into crafting an environment filled with charm, wonder, and nostalgia. While the game excels in creating a vivid magical atmosphere and engaging combat mechanics, it falls short in terms of narrative depth and quest design.
Summary
Pros
✪ Magical Atmosphere: The world is brimming with enchanting details, from secret passageways in Hogwarts to the lush landscapes of the Forbidden Forest and beyond.
✪ Combat Mechanics: The dueling system is surprisingly robust and engaging, offering plenty of spell combinations and strategies that make every encounter thrilling.
✪ Visuals and Audio: From the detailed interiors of Hogwarts to the ambient sounds of bustling Hogsmeade, the game’s aesthetics are phenomenal.
Cons
✪ Predictable Storyline: Despite its potential, the narrative lacks depth and often feels like a missed opportunity to explore more nuanced or surprising paths.
✪ Repetitive Quests: Side missions often boil down to fetch quests or simplistic tasks, failing to provide meaningful engagement or variety.
My Experience
As someone who values immersive gameplay, I was delighted by the fluid and satisfying combat system. The ability to mix and match spells in dynamic ways added an extra layer of strategy to encounters, keeping me hooked for hours. Exploring the castle and its surrounding areas was equally enjoyable; every nook and cranny seemed to have a secret or collectible waiting to be discovered. The atmosphere and attention to detail were so strong that I found myself simply wandering around, soaking in the magic.
However, the quests and storyline left much to be desired. While I expected the narrative to weave a complex web of intrigue, it instead delivered predictable and shallow outcomes. The main questline lacked memorable twists, and side missions often felt like filler. I kept hoping for more significant consequences to my actions or surprises along the way, but they never materialized.
Final Thoughts
Hogwarts Legacy is a visual and gameplay marvel that captures the essence of the Wizarding World but misses its mark on storytelling. If you’re looking for an immersive and visually captivating adventure with solid combat mechanics, this game will surely enchant you. However, if you prioritize deep narratives and meaningful quests, you might find the experience a bit underwhelming.
Rating:
8.5 /10
A must-play for fans of the franchise, but with room for improvement in its storytelling.
While I love the concept and the gameplay is quite enjoyable, it is somewhat lacking in the experience I really wanted from a "Hogwarts" game. That is, to really feel like a student at Hogwarts, go to classes and experience student life, make meaningful choices and establish relationships with fellow students and professors. Instead the experience was a bit disappointing and was more about the outside plot of the "Goblin Uprising" and "Ancient Magic Discovery" associated with our character.
I'd highly recommend this game to people who are looking for an open world game with a somewhat unique combat system using magic, as that is what separates it from other similar games in the adventure RPG genres. However one of the game's many downfalls is requiring you to play in 1080p (windowed) in order to function or otherwise deal with frequent crashes. Apparently the game broke at some point due to an update pushed out by the devs that will never be fixed, and I cannot guarantee that the solution of changing your window size for the game will fix the issue!!
Let's start with the good parts: this game is gorgeous. It really captures the aethetics of the books/movies and make it feel like a living, breathing magic world. Also, some of the puzzles are.. interesting.
Unfortunately, that's it for the good parts. The rest of the game is either mediocre or right out bad.
The equipment: there is randomization to the equipment you find. But.. they're heavily MMO/Fortnite inspired. They only have a few variations of stats (which you can change, even for the "legendary" items), and they are colour coded in the most generic way possible. Speaking of legendary: by level 5 I had legendary items equipped in every position. You're spammed with legendary gear so you end up just choosing the latest item with green (=better) stats every time.
The other parts of the game, Merlin puzzles, mazes, treasure dungeons, butterflies, etc. are fun for the first few times but then they repeat ad nauseum. They're all the same with a handful of variations.
The actual Hogwarts castle is cool, but it is a maze. If you enjoy living in a maze: good for you! For me it became tiresome real fast and I only used fast travel to get around.
The spells are literally just auto-aiming ranged weapons (combat) or "press A to solve puzzle X" type. I mean.. you have a spell that repairs stuff.. Except, all you do is point it at something broken and press one button. No interaction whatsoever.
The game feels like it's hard aimed at children or the Fortnite generation. The dialogue is embarrassingly vanilla, nothing is challenging you, there's no fail state (if you die nothing happens) and the puzzles are generally intelligence insulting. Hope the next part trusts its players abilities more.
I'm not a fan of Harry Potter. Honestly did not expect this game to be as good as it is. Combat is fun, really thought out combinations. Story is full of references. There's a little of everything here. Stealth? Flying on brooms and mounts, magical beasts. A ton-load of collectibles of different variety.
Would probably like some kind of morality system. Most decisions don't really matter apart from RP value.
Hogwarts Legacy just doesn't capture the core of joy that makes the Harry Potter universe so enchanting. The plot isn't bad, but the dialogues are so boring that it’s hard to stay engaged with the story. As a big fan of the Harry Potter series, I was expecting a lot more magic and wonder from this game.
The fighting system is probably the best thing it has going for it, but the game just doesn’t contain enough enemies to make the most of it. You end up wanting more opportunities to explore this combat system, but the game falls short of delivering that level of enjoyment.
Overall, it feels like a missed opportunity for fans who wanted a more immersive Hogwarts adventure.
This game is extremely beautiful. If you are a Harry Potter fan and ever wanted to explore Hogwarts, this is the game for you. I find myself admiring the school's beauty as I wander its campus. I recommend turning off the mini map and not fast traveling for better immersion.
Decent story, fun and engaging combat, 8/10. Can't wait for DLC!
I really don't understand why this game is so hyped. Anyway, here are a few observations:
The good:
- True potteresque atmosphere, the ability to experience Hogwarts firsthand.
- Reasonably well-written quests. Some of the side-quests are brilliant.
- A large world, with many secrets and puzzles to discover.
- Interesting and engaging combat.
- Intuitive menus and fast-travel.
The bad:
- Absolutely HORRENDOUS PC optimization. Even with Nexus mods and RT off, my RTX 3090Ti had a hard time keeping above 60 frames all the times at 1440p.
- Rudimentary RPG system. Pretty much meaningless dialogue options, talents are also very simple and uninspired.
- Voice acting of the main character (male) was dead. Like an AI. Some of the side characters are not much better.
- Too much filling content - enemy camps, treasure caves, puzzles which get old really quick.
- Meaningless loot, meaningless upgrade system. Why upgrade an item when you can find a better one 10 minutes later?
- Trying too hard to by diverse. You know what I mean.
- Idiotic lock on, which often will lock on a totally different enemy than intended.
- Although there are enemy vulnerabilities, it is rarely possible to exploit them efficiently and you end up just using whatever works and not on cool-down.
Overall, it is not a game I plan on replaying or getting all the achievements. Waste of time.
A bit cartoon-ish than the movies but you gotta love Hogwarts when you're a Harry Potter fan. Go to Hogwarts with the character of your own making and go out at night and kill some spiders in the forbidden forest. love it when you can ride fantastic beasts and magic brooms in an open world but still, no quidditch (too bad).
It is very difficult to rate.
For a start, I believe the fans of Harry Potter could enjoy the game. The world looks good, the magic aswell and combat is pretty well made and fun. Also the open world map, which you can explore, clear enemy camps and do some puzzles involving magic, at the end also do side-quest for some characters in small villages surrounding Hogwarts.
Speaking of which, the map is also maybe too big and quite big portion at the bottom right feels just like a filler without much purpose. Lot of puzzles also get repetetive quite quickly, and whats the worst part is the same cutscene after finishing one, that you can't skip and there is nearly hundred of them.
What is quite bad about this game, is the story. The beginning, when you explore the Hogwarts, visit first lesson is kinda thrilling, but quickly ends. After some kind of introduction you are beginning to spend more time outside of Hogwarts in it, which is kinda ruining the wizard student vibe and I had to take even a little break inbetween 1/3 - 2/3 of the game because how boring it got.
Apart of main story line, you follow stories of 3 students and what isnt boring is Sebastian's story line, which in my opinion should've been what the game is about. I don't want to spoil, but it felt like only part of the story, where characters have deeper development and the "choices" aren't black or white cases. I really wish this was what the game was really about, instead of superhero unbeattable student, who just got into school (its your first year) and shouldn't really feel to be more powerfull than any other character in the game.
What I also deeply miss in the game is some kind of student-like activities. At the end, you are student of Hogwarts, but it doesnt really feel like it for quite big amount of playtime.
Some summary at the end, I recommend the game for people liking Harry Potter universe. I don't recommend the game for people not taking the interest in it, unless they are really into "magic/wizard"-like things, in which case this game looks amazing, graphic and combat wise.
It's not that the game is bad, it just is very meh and has SO MUCH wasted potential. On a technical level, it's very competent, they created a nice looking castle, decent basic mechanics, etc. But for a game called "Hogwarts", you spend remarkable little time there. Instead you are given a myriad of generic open world collectathons, that are all the same thing. Also, there are zero consequences. Perform unforgivable curses directly in front of teachers? Nobody cares. Running in and out of the castle all day and night? Nobody cares. All in all, for a setting so unique, it feels extremely generic and soulless.
It would have been a very different and much more interesting game if ti actually focused much much more on the school, and ditched it's chosen one quest line. Make people go to classes, make people actually slowly level up skills through it, make other students actually matter instead of just being one time quest givers. Make reputation and bad actions actually matter.
Sadly, I don't have much hope for a sequel that actually fixes those flaws, this game just sold way too well.
The game is fun in the beginning and has a decent combat system. It quickly becomes repeatative with the side stuff. Little mini game like mechanics that are somewhat like the newer Zelda games when you get the Korok seeds. A lot of the stuff in the open world had me thinking why did they bother and you have to do some of those things just to a bigger inventory or other cosmetics. Some of the spells seem redundant or are poorly implemented. Just using the one spell for locks has got a system like fallout but quickly got tiresome. If you want to 100% this game you wont like this game but if just go through the story you probably be fine.
Beautiful looking game but..
- Tedious and repetitive missions.
- Poorly Check Pointed.
- Worst Boss Fights since "The Force Unleashed".
- No Owl game play.
- No Quidditch.
You have to be a pretty big HP fan to stick with it to the end.
This game is like Skyrim - but not as boring with that nordic all snow environment. Like Skyrim Hogwarts Legacy has some great mods that will blow your mind (and got me banned for a week at least for sharing some screenshots)
Make sure to contact me if you want to know more about those mods - have fun!
Upon finishing the intro to the game, And seeing the intro animation of Hogwarts the game sends me to the starting screen where I have to load the save file again, which then plays the same intro sequence. So it just loops endlessly.
Upon searching up the problem, it seems it's an uncommon bug, almost 2 years old (shows hoe kuch devs care) with no clear fix, some suggest to verify game files (Did not work for me) and turn off cloud save. I also did the usual of exiting the game and starting again, and restarting the PC, it did not help, the only thing I didn't do is make another character and try again ( saw others say it didn't work) and reinstall the game, as I have no patience left.
Steam says I played 108 minutes of this game, I would say 40 of those 108 minutes were spent on loading screens and repeating the same animations over and over again.
Waiting for refund.
Just another AAA-go-collect-xyz-title ala assassin's creed/ spiderman.
Gear system is annoying, you change your gear every 5 minute to the next thing you just picked up.
Combat is repetitive and color coded shields are disrupting your combos, we already learned in 2013 in DmC: Devil May Cry that this is just annoying and doesn't add difficulty. Some ground attacks are barely visible first time, leading to some frustration where you don't know what is hitting you. Default camera target selection is horrible, but switching to manual targeting fixed most of my issues.
The 3D menu map has some issues with selecting the nearest fast travel point to a quest.
Broom controls are a disaster.
Gotta give credit to the first hours that really pull you into this magical world. The open world is stunning. Sadly, it just dumps down after a couple of quests and you start realizing this is a farming game.
Kinda meh. It's a lot of talking and a lot of "hey look, this is hogwarts innit". I'm not really a fan of the Potter thing but thought it would be a good game on its own merits based on the reviews. Unfortunately it just seems like you need to really be into the universe to actually get anything out of this. Not unexpected in hindsight but a bit of a letdown.
Game is fun at start but after 2 hours it's boring like very boring I played 12 hours and I never want to open this game again
I am not the biggest fan of Harry Potter (I find it nice but not overwhelming), however, even so I find this game to be amazing. To sum it up, I feel like this game is very similar to Batman Arkham series but in a Harry Potter world.
The game works really nice on steam deck out of the box.
I know why it's on sale...it's broken. It keeps crashing. Can't even play the game, It crashes while loading the shaders. Have tried doing everything recommended, but nothing has worked. What a piece of junk.
for $15 I do recommend this game, if you are interested in using a large range of different spells to beat up a giant world full of enemies with, and love the original books and films enough to just want to explore the world you once saw in the films and/or imagined in the books. On those terms the game is successful.
HOWEVER, this will not feel like a Hogwarts student simulator AT ALL. More like an undercover Auror indiscriminately killing anything vaguely evil or suspicious in a giant beautiful world, Goblin and spider alike. The story is decent, enough to maintain interest to the end. The characters are mostly boring, with the exception of Sebastian and a couple of others. Once you've got over the awe of walking around the castle in its entirety, you will realize there is not a whole lot to do there beyond the same few repetitive puzzles. You will spend most of your time playing outside the castle grounds. Fundamentally the biggest failure of this game is you don't experience Hogwarts as a student. And that is a bit of a shame.
Game is pretty fun. Wait until it goes on sale.
Stuff I like:
Graphics are pretty good, even on my old 2070. Exploration / puzzle solving / collecting secrets is all pretty good so if you like those types of games you'll have fun. Quests are all pretty engaging and the side quests still relate to the main story. They won't absolutely blow your mind but they're fun, even if some delve down into the simplicity of "go root out that bandit camp of goblins" or "fetch-quest these cabbages to some other idiot." You know, the standard MMO / RPG "kill 10 boars" junk. The combat is engaging and interesting. Probably best to suck it up and play on controller because I've been muscling through it on M&K and it can get rough when you're fighting multiple strong enemies doing guitar chord poses all over your keyboard to reach all the keys to dodge, block, roll, cast, change spell sets. Character creation is better than WoW but not as good as some in-depth RPG like Baldur's Gate 3 or Fallout or something. What I like most (that a ton of HP fans seem to hate) is the game's timeline takes place like 100 years before the movies / books, so you get a semi fresh take on the HP universe / setting, and like the KotOR games, you aren't force fed some famous NPC 'member-berries every five minutes to remind you HEY! THIS IS HARRY POTTER! 'MEMBER IN THE MOVIES HAGRID? HERE HE IS! 'MEMBER SNAPE!? HERE HE IS!!! Yeah none of that crap and it's nice. (Star Wars games are notorious for this) Oh, and the voice acting is all really well done. Most of the characters do seem to have their own personalities, and I haven't run into that Skyrim issue where you notice every 3rd Nord sounds the same.
Stuff I dislike:
Game was def made for consoles and controllers first so like I said it might be easier to just play with a controller. Jumping is really derpy and there are some puzzles that do require parkour. The flight controls are absolutely horrid, and you do NOT have free-look camera when in flight, the camera follows your character on a flat horizontal plane which is the dumbest thing ever. WoW's flight controls are 100x better than this decision. Imagine giving the player a large world to explore only to not allow them to look down. It also makes it derpy when trying to do races. Even if the devs thought this way might be "easier" for people, at least give us the option? There are mods on nexus that fix this but even then they're a little derpy, but worth it. One last gripe is the inventory. I dislike it being so limited (it can be expanded) and I'm constantly full to the max right in the middle of some long quest, which don't seem to have checkpoints if you abandon them.
I'm not a gigantic Harry Potter fan but I do like games like this where you get to explore and discover things while a story plays out, collecting all the stuff scattered around.
Very fun game. Bought this back when it came out and boy, what was the hype worth it. the open world is great. and for me building my own wand was a dream come true.
Although the game lacks in a few areas, I think the over-all game is good and I would recommend it to almost anyone. As many people have mentioned the repeating Merlin trials and other tasks really dwell on the game-play, and make it not as fun. Hogwarts and the surrounding grounds are incredible, but it only seems to worsen as you get further out, with repeating enemy types and the story not being very gripping. Even with these few issues, I believe this game is worth the purchase (on sale maybe)
I loved this game sooo much. Explored everywhere, got everything, am level 39 and ALMOST did all the quests and achievements. But then the game decided to bug and now i am unable to change time. The option has disappeared from the map. This has caused me to be locked out of some quests, getting the last demiguise and some achievements. Sadly I don't have a save from before this bug occurred, so I am stuck at having 99% completion.
This bug has been reported for over a year and they haven't patched it or addressed it. Very disappointed. I would've recommended this game before this bug, but now I can't. I highly recommend everyone keeps an older save in case you unfortunately run into this too.
"Hogwarts Legacy" has garnered a lot of attention since its release, and many players have had a mix of experiences. Here’s a general overview based on player feedback:
Graphics and World-Building
The game features stunning graphics that bring the Hogwarts School and its surrounding areas to life. The attention to detail in the environment, from the Great Hall to Hogsmeade, immerses players in the Wizarding World.
Gameplay and Mechanics
The gameplay offers a mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat. Players appreciate the freedom to explore the open world, attend classes, and learn spells. The combat system has been praised for its fluidity and variety, allowing for different play styles.
Story and Characters
The story is set in the 1800s, long before Harry Potter’s time, which provides a fresh narrative. While some players find the plot engaging and filled with interesting side quests, others feel it doesn’t fully capitalize on the rich lore of the Wizarding World.
Performance and Technical Issues
Some players have reported technical glitches and performance issues, particularly on older consoles. However, many updates have been rolled out to address these problems.
Overall Impression
Overall, "Hogwarts Legacy" has been well-received for its nostalgic value and engaging gameplay, despite some criticisms regarding its story depth and technical issues. Fans of the franchise will likely enjoy the chance to explore a beloved universe in a new way.
completed and 100%ed the game
completely unbiased review i got no beef wit jk rowlings
Eh if its not on a Atlest 60 or 70% sale dont bother game kinda gets boring over time Same Missions Go find that person Fight enemies come back thats about it, spells kinda felt underwhelming so much more couldve been done but they were alr, Flying on the broom was reaaally good so the other 2 mounts were wasted potential.
gameplay is good for a while the stroy is mid,(atleast compared to the original story books)
some missions are pretty annoying with the hardest difficulty cuz u forgot to Pack in mutiple heal potions and now stuck with 800 waves of enemies, but its possible also Can change difficulty easily so thats there if u wanna go there.
overall if got this for cheap Its a 7.5/10
if recieved at full price 5/10
Rating it based on how much effort they put into finishing their project, since the core gameplay loop and even the story are generally good.
It's way too poorly optimized for a game this successful. It has no right requiring this much resources and running this choppy for the visual quality it offers. It does nothing out of the ordinary, doesn't truly push the boundaries of visual fidelity, yet it requires a lot of resources. That's just not acceptable and it DOES get in the way of gameplay. For example, while running through the castle I often find myself slowed down at various doors because the next part didn't load fast enough. And I'm running it on a 4080 @ 1920x1200 with below maximum settings and yet it is still sluggish. That's just not "above the recommend threshold".
The story isn't stellar but combined with the gameplay loop it does serve an immersive role and that alone should suggest that fans of RPGs and of the Hogwarts lore should be interested in this by I wouldn't recommend it to general interest players because the lack luster performance does manifest in other areas of the game where they just haven't finished their ideas and the game does suffer.
If you do have 50-80h to kill and you don't really have to prioritize your time by selecting between different games, then sure give this one a go. But that's not exactly an endorsement, is it?
I really really really wanted to give this game a positive review but after almost 80 hours I just can't
Pro's
- graphics are beautiful
- the castle and other area's are very well made
- combat is kind of fun
- there is a quest where you get into a haunted mansion, that was very cool
Cons
- the game's story is very shallow
- a lot of quests are just fetch quests
- the npc stories are insanely boring
- the story makes no sense
- flying is awefull
- Voice acting is just awfull (AI voices)
- game gives you the illusion of choice, you can make choices but it actually does not change anything in the game
- upgrading your gear only becomes available at 3/4th of the game and it cost a lot of effort to get the right materials.
- room of requirement is just a place where you can craft ( but yet again crafting is very very VERY shallow)
- the antagonist is more some kind of silly guy
The thing I hated the most is the fact that NPC's don't react on your actions at all.
At some point unforgivable curses get their part in the story, Not gonna tell what but they make a whole fuss about it.
But if you actually learn these curses and kill/torture enemies, nobody gives a shit.
There is actually a scene where your own character tells someone how bad it is to use the dark arts (at this moment I almost tortured and killed enough people to fill a small village - and yes nobody gave a shit about it when I did it.
Another thing I hate was the bartender at the three brooms. the woman sounds like a f-ing chain smoking Barry White with a sore troath.
A delightful and highly addictive experience
As a long time fan of the Harry Potter books I was sceptical but also curious about this game. This could easily have fallen through as an easy way to cash in on a popular franchise, but Portkey Games clearly had the passion and proper vision to do this the right way (Disney - observe and learn). The main story is really solid and feels "right" in this world while the general experience gives you that authentic feel of the world we know from the books (and movies), which can generally be credited to the music, visuals, general writing and the voice work.
The gameplay is engaging and very addictive but not particularly challenging for the experienced gamer. As a casual gamer for three decades, Normal difficulty was relatively easy, while more adequately challenging at certain key points. But I think the choices in the game design makes sense, as many of the challenges are clearly designed to train the player in the game mechanics themselves. I can imagine a number of Harry Potter fans with limited gaming experience being lured into playing this. If you're one of those - don't worry. If you're a seasoned player of Souls-like games, you might find even Hard to be too easy, though, but, then again, the game is a lot more than just its combat sequences.
Criticism
With the game overall being very good, I only have minor criticisms.
- First of all, I would have liked some backstory to my character. You're thrown somewhat abruptly into fifth year with no explanation or reasoning behind it. Some details there to add some depth to the character would have been nice.
- Like most other popular games in this genre, your character relatively quickly starts to provide verbal hints when you're facing a puzzle. It is NO WHERE NEAR as bad in this as I've experienced in certain other games (like the recent Tomb Raider or Horizon games), but I really, really, really, really wish I could turn this off completely. TBF, though, in some cases (like the "cave puzzles") there are no hints at all, which is glorious.
[*]No support for controller gyro. We're at a point in time where this should be mandatory and I'll point this out in every review going forward. The good news is that - through Steam Input - I can assign mouse to the gyro as well as e.g. Flick Stick or track ball depending on the controller I use, and it works at the same time as the normal controller input (which saves me a lot of time in the setup). The bad news is that the game (like all other games) gets confused and constantly changes the visual control guides depending on getting the last input from mouse or controller. I really wish that games - at least - allowed me to lock the cues to either. But mostly, I just wish the game provided a mouse-like control to use for Steam Input or complete proper in-game support for gyro.
Ratings
Overall (with the heart): 8/10 (very good)
Game doesnt run, just crashes instantly on warning text. Nothing works to fix it. And this is a known issue. DO NOT BUY
Hogwarts Legacy delivers a visually stunning recreation of the wizarding world, but falls short in gameplay. While the setting is impressive, the quests and open-world activities are boring and generic. It's a game you want to love, but playing feels like a chore. You find yourself forcing through repetitive tasks, only to quit after 20 minutes of another dull quest. The beautiful world can't make up for the lack of engaging content, leaving players disappointed despite the initial promise.
As a proud Ravenclaw Potterhead, I 100% recommend this game. I'm simply in love with the graphics and the exploration. Only downside is the lack of Quidditch but there is still flying so it compensates a little... Already played 70 hours and planning to 100% unlock every success linked to it.
Maybe if it was on bigger discount it would be ok but with this price it has, it provides way too little content. It's a linear story pretending to give you choice but there are maybe 2 moments in the entire game when you can somewhat affect the story (and it doesn't matter all that much). It was advertised to have companions in game but they are just npcs that identify as your friends and join you only on specific quests, there is no companion system like in Skyrim for example. Could write much more about it but to cut it short, it's not a bad game, just very disappointing. Unless on big discount it is not worth its price
The game is made with care and passion and it shows if you like western RPG'S you will like this one too main story is not that long but still good. For me personally the dialogues were a bit corny but game-play carries the game well
Badly optimized, otherwise a good game. Wouldn't recommend before any meaningful patch that fixes the stuttering.
Game hasn't run for months, won't even start up and no fix has come for it that fixes my issue.
worth to buy on sale, painful if you like to 100% achievements
Hogwarts Legacy is extremely fun for the first 12 hours. exploring Hogwarts was incredible and exciting. however, after that first impression of the castle and the story forcing me away from it, i began to see how empty the massive open world was.
Most disappointing was a lack of a reputation system. some kind of repercussion for using dark magic in the school and around certain characters.
Another flaw is in the lack of choices. for an open world rpg its constrained to a very linear path. it appears to let you choose a "different" path but all leads to the same destination.
i believe i see a strong base but a rushed release that hindered this game greatly. hopefully they add all the classic rpg mechanics to the next game.
HL: Poaching is bad, kill the poachers. Also here's a bag to catch and sell the creatures.
Seriously save your money. This is a boring game, very repetitive, and pretty buggy. Also has full screen ads now.
I have played video games since my early childhood in the start of the 90s. I've played PC and many console generations, I am not picky about genre, and I always enjoy a fun, solid video game. I didn't used to be opposed to preordering, unlike many of my friends became in recent years. This game changed that. I will never preorder a game again. I have never been more disappointed in a video game than I have after playing Hogwarts: Legacy.
I preordered well before launch. I grew up with Harry Potter, and I was beyond excited about the possibility of a Harry Potter RPG or even an adventure game. The world lends itself to such a concept beautifully - an RPG should let you live a fun life going to Hogwarts, as so many of my generation wanted to do. This game delivered not a single element of that.
Hogwarts: Legacy is not only poorly-written - with the most banal attempt at story and "characters" (blocks of wood) less interesting than watching paint dry and as memorable as differentiating between your current and last glass of water - the gameplay is downright boring. The spell dueling system manages to be almost alright, but it still isn't what could be called "good," especially when it becomes mind-numbingly repetitive. The game manages to be shockingly uninventive and make no use of the Harry Potter universe. Early into the initial game (I played at launch, gave it a decent run, and I have no plans to ever try it again), you're told that Quidditch is off the table for lazy and ridiculous contrived "reasons" because the devs were too lazy to create a system for the iconic sport. Night and day does not matter. Going to classes does not matter, and classes are at best a dull cutscene or meaningless conversation. The sorting hat is just a straight house option. You won't make friends in your house common room, you choose "witch" or "wizard" dormitory but it doesn't have any bearing because you have no reason to go back there, and you're punished for exactly nothing, ever. The Forbidden Forest is just a zone you can randomly wander into (because "open world" means 0 consequences to your actions). No one monitors the castle or the students because the devs might actually have to do work and implement a system for something like that instead of just let the player run around willy-nilly. It might be an RPG instead of an "open world go find the white icons on the map" game.
This is a game that billed itself as a Harry Potter open-world RPG. It has absolutely no RPG elements that should be an obvious staple for a "Harry Potter RPG." In fact, it doesn't have RPG elements at all, same as many modern "open world RPGs," yet this game seems even worse in that regard. Likewise, the world itself feels nothing like Harry Potter, even without the RPG elements, and even less so does it feel historical. It's a dead world of glassy-eyed meaningless quests for a menagerie of non-characters you can't tell apart because they have no memorable aspects. Nothing matters, nothing changes, and nothing bears weight. It's a sandbox with no sand in it. I have never seen a better example of a game with no soul.
If you're a Harry Potter fan, don't waste your money. If you like good video games, don't waste your money. Even if you're capable of enjoying mediocre video games or outright trash, you're still wasting your hard-earned cash and your finite mortal lifespan on something that will be less satisfying than getting a good deal at McDonald's (which is also less carcinogenic). This game is nothing. It's a waste of time, money, effort, and certainly a waste of excitement. It's a stain on the Harry Potter universe, and it's a crying shame we HP fans didn't get the game we deserved. Go play the PS2 Harry Potter game instead. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day was ruined.
Game continues to crash and I cant even finish my first lesson. My husband has tried everything and even thought my save file was currupt and we thought that solved the problem but it crashed not even 10 minutes into playing again. I now am going to completely start over and hope that magically fixes it.... Paid 60 dollars for a game I might not even be able to play, and my PC is plenty capable of handling a game like this.
Go on reddit and see how this isn't just a random "me" thing.
Poorly optimized for PC. I have had games more graphically intense, run perfectly on my system. The overall gameplay, story and design are good, but not if you playing on a PC, even with a controller
I enjoyed it for what it was, a mid-tier game. For a bigger HP fan I could see it being much more entertaining. Definitely get it on sale though, as there's no more development for the game going on and $60 is a bit steep.
Hogwarts and Hogsmeade are amazing, but after 20 hours or so, the game becomes repetitive and boring.
There's too many glitches.
I am playing just to finish it off for the sake of it.
If you are looking at this game its probably because you love dreaming about being a student at Hogwarts. This game will not scratch that itch as classes don't play a role. It wasn't a bad game per se, but it definitely wasn't great either.
The world is pretty, combat isn't bad. Exploration is exciting at first...
but the puzzle side of the exploration is simple and way too repetitive...Your choice of House barely matters. You get different and pretty common rooms that you'll see two or three times in the whole game and each has a small questline that differs. (Some of them aren't worth seeing...I'm looking at you Sir Nicholas). Other choices don't matter one bit. There are other gripes too, like picture every cool thing ever from Harry Potter and the game will try to force-feed you every bit until none of it has value or even makes sense. I mean you even handle the deathly hallows!
As a side note, a core aspect of the game is "rescuing" beasts from the evil poachers by, er, shoving them into a little bag and selling them, or throwing them into the room of requirement to rot until you remember to feed them every now and then in order to get their fur or something...
At first, game looks amazing. You level up, you learn new charms and skills. You collet new gear and do all these side quest. Combat is satisfying, with plenty of attacks and combos. You are dodging, parying and juggling your enemies in the air. And on top of that: Hogwarts is magical place full of secrets. But very quickly you discover this is just an illusion. Story is boring, NPC characters are plain and uninteresting. Fights are repetitive and due to world level scaling, exp and gear doesn't matter.
Very good framework, fantastic, 9/10 world with 3/10 story, 2/10 characters and 6/10 gameplay. After 13h I had 0 interest in the story or to discover what will happen next.
First Impressions
I’m a grown wizard running around Hogwarts, casting spells and flying on broomsticks, while dodging curses and uncovering secrets. Feels magical!

The verdict
As a lifelong Harry Potter fan, stepping into the world of Hogwarts Legacy feels like a dream come true. The finale could've used a bit more magic, but overall, this game captures the heart and soul of the Wizarding World. From casting spells to exploring iconic locations, it’s the closest you’ll get to living your own Hogwarts adventure. A must-play for any Potterhead!
Ehhhh, Feels cool for the first hour or so, then things start to get kinda lame after using the same types of spells for the longest time. seeing the castle is neat. Also I wanted to be evil as hell in this game but it feels like if you go with the evil ending all you get for it is that old guy being dumbfounded with your choice and you don't do anything diabolical with it. come on man, let me be evil and shit. I WANT TO BE A MENACE!!!
Overall a great game, specially with 70% off.
II'm not really a fan of HP but i believe who does this respects the franschise, theres a lot of details, from the paintings moving, sounds etc. Castle looks amazing. Flying with the brom as well.
Felt strange that i remember this game having some backlash because of some author comments but this game has a lot of diversity and inclusion Kappa and actually doesn't bother me, fits well. Still would take out gay couples.
i think i few of collecteables are bugged but still managed to get the achievment even not grabbing all, Thank you
The merlin trials are way too many and had one not showing on the map for some reason and had to search online and verify one by one to complete the achievment. Also we cant skip the animation for us to suffer lol
Still totally recommended
