This is a classic RPG. In my opinion, one of the best. With its story, gameplay, and voice acting. The graphic are outdated but that should be anticipated for a 20yr old game.
The best rpg Ive ever played story wise, lore wise by far. It's a perfectly made rpg despite being more than 20 years old. I still play the game no matter how many times I've beaten it and enjoy it ever time.
I wish they added the fable 2 and fable 3 to steam as well.
Fable is the best game where your choices matters.
I remember when it first came out and I played hundreds of hours of playing. I always go through being good and evil.
It has aged well.
Yeah what can I say, This was the first ever game I played on the OG Xbox, Fable, then Fable the lost chapters. This game will always be great
Good game, 9/10, however it is criminal that Fable 2 isn't on Steam.
Just nice to go back and play a game from the childhood. If it was something you played as a kid or even just someone who likes adventure games with a good story line to them, this wont disappoint.
its sad to say this but an emulated xbox version of fable you downloaded from that shady Russian site plays better than this
Its an absolute must for anyone who played the original Fable.
It should also be a must for anyone who likes classic RPGs.
Sadly, it doesn't go well with modern demands and mainstream must-have themes, so our latest generations probably won't even look at this game. Not that I'd care tho.
Its one of the best RPGs ever - be it jokes and puns, gameplay or storyline.
I think I enjoyed my time with this game. There are some frustrating parts and the economy is bethesda broken thanks to an exploit that everyone uses. The combat, which fun for a while, gets old nearer to the mid/endgame, and I ended up running through a lot of zones rather than fighting through them. There are a lot of fun skills to play around with, which helps the combat fresh at the start. All said I think Fable anniversary is a fun experience.
Its a remaster of my all time favourite video game, and it stays very true to the original. For light spirited RPG its really easy to pick up even for someone who isnt much of a gamer.
The pc port is a bit buggy (controls stick on menus often) but it's great fun.
The fact Xbox won't release the rest of the Fable series on Steam despite the last main game being released over 10 years now is a crime.
Dude, it's Fable. My childhood of running around and beating people up and realizing you actually can't do that in real life!!
Its a great game once you get the hang of it, however it has been freezing and not saving progress.
The Games unplayable by me because of how badly it runs, i loved this game growing up but at this point i cant play longer than 5 minutes without getting a headache. Very unfortunate.
Ahh... my childhood... Played it day and night....
Still remember how the game would ask me to block Whisper's attacks during guild training with ,,ŚPM'' which in Polish stands for ,,middle mouse button" but my lil dumb child self couldn't figure out the meaning behind the abbreviation and it took me a while to figure it out (first game of mine where it actually had a function) so I would replay the section of the game leading up to the training session over and over again for a week straight, a few times a day, till I asked my father for help... The world of the game suddenly became so vast... Had a blast redoing the first 1% of the game anyway. :D
This is my favourite game from my childhood and it's so wonderful it's available on steam via the anniversary edition. It's not the best game ever made, but I love it regardless, flaws and all :3
a timeless classic, i've been having issues with the lvling though. It seems to crash almost every time you go to the lvling menu
Played on XBox a long time ago, played again on Steam not so long ago. It is a great game, a real classic. Feels a bit retro and empty for nowadays standards, but it is definetely worth a shot! When can we have Fable 2 and 3 on Steam???
Absolute classic. The only reason I no longer own an Xbox. They should have maintained this series man... :/
I played this when it came out for xbox way back when, then played the sequels. I keep coming back to this one every now and then though. It's just a goofy game, with a kinda cool story. The story is super linear though so there's not technically much replay value. But I replay it all the same.
dont buy the game, shit is way too buggy. stop me to progress the story at the twinblade quest
I beat this game on xbox when it came out. I remember loving it. Unfortunately I cant get myself fully engaged in it on PC. not really sure why, maybe it didnt age well. I have fond memories of this game and would recommend everyone at least try this game.
I absolutely adore Fable! I honestly had a ball returning to Albion, slicing and dicing my way to Legendary Renown! It was so fun, and it had me giggling all the way through! This game has been polished off so nicely; it looks wonderful and plays quite smoothly. No funny little bugs or things that you can sometimes get with an older game remastered. I played using a Xbox controller, and it worked really well! I probably wouldn't recommend mouse and keyboard, I really struggled, but the controller worked great! The achievement hunting was really fun for this to, if that's your thing :)
A masterpiece of a game, story is fantastic, gameplay is phenomenal. Would be awesome if Fable 2 and 3 made their way to PC as well.
"for every choice, a consequence"
PROS: easy to play and an enjoyable experience; music with environments work well together, to create a good atmosphere; choice to be good or evil; great replay value; interesting story; combat is amazing & diverse ( you can play as a warrior, mage, archer or a combination of all 3 ); great British humor
CONS: backtracking was annoying; main protagonist is a mute but he will say stuff like: HEY, HAHA, FOLLOW etc.
CONCLUSION: For all the problems that Fable's hype has brought, the game itself isn't one to be missed. It was a must play on OG Xbox and it's a must play on PC today. The reason why I recommend this game the most is because I can tell that the reboot will suck ass with it's woke agenda, while this was free to be for what it is & free from woke garbage company sweet baby inc. Would love to see a Fable definitive trilogy in the future!
Gameplay-wise, Fable Anniversary remains true to the original's charm but with improved controls and a streamlined interface that makes navigating this RPG much smoother. The combat is simple yet satisfying, with a fun mix of melee, ranged, and magic abilities that allow for varied play styles. I enjoyed moral choices that affect your character's development and appearance, adding a layer of depth to the gameplay.
However, while the nostalgia hits all the right notes, I did encounter some shortcomings. The AI can be hit-or-miss, particularly during combat, where companions sometimes struggle to keep up or take effective action. Additionally, certain quests and side content can feel a bit repetitive, but that’s often par for the course in classic RPGs.
One aspect that remains a highlight is the humor, which is woven throughout the dialogue and character interactions. It’s refreshing to see a game that can tackle both light-hearted moments and darker themes without losing its wit.
Brings me back, I'm being a good character this time, but my wife farted so her irl playthrough is a bit darker now.
The feeling of nostalgia playing this is just bliss, brings me right back to my childhood days. Would highly recommend
A fun RPG with good gameplay. I found the mechanics very fun to use, though it is my least favorite out of the trilogy. The ability to quickly swap between melee, ranged, and spells made it allowed me to use them all effectively in combat. Some RPGs, such as Elder Scrolls, have dominant strategies which can water down your combat. Unfortunately the later parts of the game and its new enemy faction did make the game a bit more grindy. The getting knocked down mechanic was annoying because it was very easy to get stuck in a loop of being knocked down over and over again. Without the chance to fight back or even evade out of the way it felt like a very cheep way to defeat the player. Especially on the harder difficulty or fighting higher level enemies where most of their attacks will knock you down. Using ranged weapons can help with this though, assuming you can stay away from the enemies long enough. 7/10
My total hours of play: 79.4
I mean, it has run very poorly since I purchased it years ago. There are no camera speed controls or anything like that. I played it years ago up to the part with the 'werewolves,' but now I can't even get through the intro because the game feels and looks so weird, it causes motion sickness. It's really sad because I remember this being one of my favorite games as a kid, and I'd love to play it again.
while nostalgia may influence my opinion, i cannot help but love this game. a classic rpg that still holds up well and manages to be charming despite its flaws. the story is simple but well done. the soundtrack is gorgeous. the combat, while clunky, can be satisfying if you utilise blocking and dodge-rolling. the morality system is a classic "good versus evil" which on the one hand lacks nuance, but on the other hand rewards you with having your appearance change to reflect the choices you've made, as well as npc's reacting to you based on what path you choose. for anyone who played this when they were younger, it is worth revisiting. and for anyone new to the series, it is definitely worth trying out.
While not as reactive to your choices as more recent rpgs, there's enough of a unique voice here to warrant a playthrough if the style interests you.
As someone who grew up with the original "Fable," diving into "Fable Anniversary" feels like a reunion with an old friend. The developers have done an incredible job of breathing new life into Albion, making it look stunningly beautiful with improved textures, lighting, and character models. The world feels more alive and vibrant, capturing the magic that made me fall in love with the game years ago.
One of the things that has always set "Fable" apart is its blend of whimsical storytelling and moral choices. In "Fable Anniversary," these elements remain as engaging as ever. The way the game adapts to your choices, allowing you to shape your hero's journey, creates a deeply personal experience. Whether you're playing as a noble hero or a mischievous rogue, the story reacts in meaningful ways, keeping you hooked from start to finish.
The combat system, while still simple, has been polished and feels more responsive. And for those of us who love a challenge, the addition of Achievements adds an extra layer of fun. The inclusion of "The Lost Chapters" is a fantastic bonus, offering even more quests and areas to explore, which is great for both new players and long-time fans.
Of course, no game is perfect. There are some minor bugs and glitches that pop up occasionally, but they’re pretty easy to overlook considering the overall quality of the game. The controls can feel a bit dated, which is to be expected from a remaster, but it's a small price to pay for revisiting such a classic.
In conclusion, "Fable Anniversary" is a loving tribute to the original that balances nostalgia with modern enhancements. Whether you’re returning to Albion after many years or experiencing it for the first time, it’s a journey worth taking. Immerse yourself in this enchanting world, and let the magic of "Fable" capture your heart once more.
this game is what brought me into the world of games when i was a kid and will always hold a special place to me, the game is an amazing experience of fantasy and magic with a story that makes you want more
Dont know if its the best version, but out of box it obviously looks and runs better than TLC or the OG, if thats your thing. Art style is a little jarring when it comes to some character faces
very fun game in my opinion at least and kind of easy to get trading cards so good game :)
one of the rarest perfect role playing games in history and definitely not getting the fame it deserves compared to other role playing games, the aesthetic of the game cant be found anywhere else i tried to search but nothing comes up only fable has this aesthetic.
I will always love this game, truly. It is a part of my childhood as well as a part of my adulthood, all the tongue in cheek humor, all the epic badassery, and every bit the charm I love this game for. This game is actual perfection... perhaps not to all, but absolutely to me. It brings me back to a time when games were good, because developers were passionate about their games and it showed and they werent just mass producing mediocre swill for quick cash.
i like and enjoy the way this game makes me feel. i am content with this transaction, in which i gave my money in return for this game. i feel good when i play this
Only about 9 hours in but this game is pretty amazing. Works excellent on steam deck for those wondering.
"Try to get your combat multiplier even higher." - A Bald Groomer
Yep, it's decent. Some bizarre mechanics but overall good.
Fable is a nostalgic gem that offers a fun story and memorable choices in a magical setting.
A banger wonderful game. Wonderful story, Visuals meh, characters meh... You'll have fun even after restarting the game for 11 times. Truly a masterpiece of game.... 8/10
Fable: The Lost Chapters is a fantastic RPG from my childhood.
Fable Anniversary Edition is not that game.
The controls of the Lost chapter are a bit outdated, using shift to control a wheel of magic and right click to run. You cannot change or customize these. But thats not the true problem.
The true problem is that the entire game is wildly unresponsive. The mouse slows to a snails crawl when you open menus, but outside of a menu spins your character so fast you get motion sickness. You cannot change that either.
You must rely on the mouse to change camera direction, which is used to determine which enemy you attack and the direction your character moves. That works fine in Lost Chapters, but not the Anniversary edition. Combat sucks, because you cannot quickly select between enemies and your character will feel unresponsive and sluggish, which is a terrible user experience.
Example combat experience from Fable: Lost Chapters;
You slash an enemy with your sword, move camera to the left and slash another enemy, dodging an incoming spell. Then you roll away form the group of enemies, flick the camera and do a charge spell into the group, knocking them all down.
Example of combat experience for Fable: Anniversary Edition;
You swing your sword and hit an enemy. Moving your camera towards a different enemy, you swing again, and watch your character sing towards the camera instead of the enemy you should be aiming at. The enemy spell hits you, you get knocked down. You hold shift and scroll up to select a spell, meaning to blast the enemies away from you to gain some space. But scrolling up scrolls down so you instead cast a different spell and get hit again. You select the spell to dash towards an enemy, intending to knock them all down, move the camera to target one of the enemies and then dash away from the group because it autoselected either a lone enemy or no one at all.
You decide to try your bow but the mouse is tweaking so fast you end up staring at your foot and cannot target enemies. Eventually you just run away and use your lightning.
Yes, in the original sometimes your lightning spell would miss for a moment before finding the target - but it was never this ungodly terrible. The game is borderline unplayable. I see reviews talking about how the controls are dated... its not the outdated controls is the poor functionality.
Overall the game is a bad PC port of an xbox game, which is baffling because I bought Fable: Lost Chapters on my PC back in the early 2000s.
Oh, and last thing; the game was announced with a difficulty mode. I'm not sure if its just the higher difficulty mode or the entire base game but the economy no longer allows trading for profit. Items sell for 30-60% of base value instead of varying based on the location, supply and restock date in the original game. This means you can no longer play lawful good merchant as you will never make money by selling an item you bought.
Edit: I found a comment on the forum. You can reduce the excessive camera spin by going to local steam files... WellingtonGame > Config (folder)> DefaultSystemSettings.ini and changing CameraSensitivity. I am experimenting with 0.65 so I suggest starting around that number. You have to restart game for changes to take affect. I did not see the other options mentioned in the comment for smoothing and acceleration so I cannot say if changing those would help.
Apparently the game really is a bad xbox port which is completely infuriating considering they already made it work on PC. You might try it with controller. I have not tried controller yet.
You can still get some enjoyment out of the game but curb your expectations.
I wrote the review because I do not want people thinking this is what the original experience was. The old controls used to work even if they were weird.
A banger of a game. Amazing story, OK visuals, good characters... You'll have fun even after restarting the game 10 times. Truly a masterpiece
Nostalgia game. Charming and simple but, c'mon, there are objectively better RPGs out there.
Love the Fable series, good old memories.
Aiming to replay the fable games before the new one next year. I remember playing this for the first time with my uncle and him being delighted / horrified as I chose every evil option available to me. Just as fun being evil and tormenting npcs as I remember.
Silly humour, replayable with different builds & alignments, interesting story (although pacing doesn't seem designed for you to sit & play for hours in one chunk as I tend to).
Wish 2 & 3 were also on steam. I also wish the achievements were less lumped together. To those unfamiliar with the fable games, I'd probably recommend starting with 2 or 3 as they massively improved gameplay & quality of life.
