While not as reactive to your choices as more recent rpgs, there's enough of a unique voice here to warrant a playthrough if the style interests you.
As someone who grew up with the original "Fable," diving into "Fable Anniversary" feels like a reunion with an old friend. The developers have done an incredible job of breathing new life into Albion, making it look stunningly beautiful with improved textures, lighting, and character models. The world feels more alive and vibrant, capturing the magic that made me fall in love with the game years ago.
One of the things that has always set "Fable" apart is its blend of whimsical storytelling and moral choices. In "Fable Anniversary," these elements remain as engaging as ever. The way the game adapts to your choices, allowing you to shape your hero's journey, creates a deeply personal experience. Whether you're playing as a noble hero or a mischievous rogue, the story reacts in meaningful ways, keeping you hooked from start to finish.
The combat system, while still simple, has been polished and feels more responsive. And for those of us who love a challenge, the addition of Achievements adds an extra layer of fun. The inclusion of "The Lost Chapters" is a fantastic bonus, offering even more quests and areas to explore, which is great for both new players and long-time fans.
Of course, no game is perfect. There are some minor bugs and glitches that pop up occasionally, but they’re pretty easy to overlook considering the overall quality of the game. The controls can feel a bit dated, which is to be expected from a remaster, but it's a small price to pay for revisiting such a classic.
In conclusion, "Fable Anniversary" is a loving tribute to the original that balances nostalgia with modern enhancements. Whether you’re returning to Albion after many years or experiencing it for the first time, it’s a journey worth taking. Immerse yourself in this enchanting world, and let the magic of "Fable" capture your heart once more.
this game is what brought me into the world of games when i was a kid and will always hold a special place to me, the game is an amazing experience of fantasy and magic with a story that makes you want more
Dont know if its the best version, but out of box it obviously looks and runs better than TLC or the OG, if thats your thing. Art style is a little jarring when it comes to some character faces
very fun game in my opinion at least and kind of easy to get trading cards so good game :)
one of the rarest perfect role playing games in history and definitely not getting the fame it deserves compared to other role playing games, the aesthetic of the game cant be found anywhere else i tried to search but nothing comes up only fable has this aesthetic.
I will always love this game, truly. It is a part of my childhood as well as a part of my adulthood, all the tongue in cheek humor, all the epic badassery, and every bit the charm I love this game for. This game is actual perfection... perhaps not to all, but absolutely to me. It brings me back to a time when games were good, because developers were passionate about their games and it showed and they werent just mass producing mediocre swill for quick cash.
i like and enjoy the way this game makes me feel. i am content with this transaction, in which i gave my money in return for this game. i feel good when i play this
Only about 9 hours in but this game is pretty amazing. Works excellent on steam deck for those wondering.
"Try to get your combat multiplier even higher." - A Bald Groomer
Yep, it's decent. Some bizarre mechanics but overall good.
Fable is a nostalgic gem that offers a fun story and memorable choices in a magical setting.
A banger wonderful game. Wonderful story, Visuals meh, characters meh... You'll have fun even after restarting the game for 11 times. Truly a masterpiece of game.... 8/10
Fable: The Lost Chapters is a fantastic RPG from my childhood.
Fable Anniversary Edition is not that game.
The controls of the Lost chapter are a bit outdated, using shift to control a wheel of magic and right click to run. You cannot change or customize these. But thats not the true problem.
The true problem is that the entire game is wildly unresponsive. The mouse slows to a snails crawl when you open menus, but outside of a menu spins your character so fast you get motion sickness. You cannot change that either.
You must rely on the mouse to change camera direction, which is used to determine which enemy you attack and the direction your character moves. That works fine in Lost Chapters, but not the Anniversary edition. Combat sucks, because you cannot quickly select between enemies and your character will feel unresponsive and sluggish, which is a terrible user experience.
Example combat experience from Fable: Lost Chapters;
You slash an enemy with your sword, move camera to the left and slash another enemy, dodging an incoming spell. Then you roll away form the group of enemies, flick the camera and do a charge spell into the group, knocking them all down.
Example of combat experience for Fable: Anniversary Edition;
You swing your sword and hit an enemy. Moving your camera towards a different enemy, you swing again, and watch your character sing towards the camera instead of the enemy you should be aiming at. The enemy spell hits you, you get knocked down. You hold shift and scroll up to select a spell, meaning to blast the enemies away from you to gain some space. But scrolling up scrolls down so you instead cast a different spell and get hit again. You select the spell to dash towards an enemy, intending to knock them all down, move the camera to target one of the enemies and then dash away from the group because it autoselected either a lone enemy or no one at all.
You decide to try your bow but the mouse is tweaking so fast you end up staring at your foot and cannot target enemies. Eventually you just run away and use your lightning.
Yes, in the original sometimes your lightning spell would miss for a moment before finding the target - but it was never this ungodly terrible. The game is borderline unplayable. I see reviews talking about how the controls are dated... its not the outdated controls is the poor functionality.
Overall the game is a bad PC port of an xbox game, which is baffling because I bought Fable: Lost Chapters on my PC back in the early 2000s.
Oh, and last thing; the game was announced with a difficulty mode. I'm not sure if its just the higher difficulty mode or the entire base game but the economy no longer allows trading for profit. Items sell for 30-60% of base value instead of varying based on the location, supply and restock date in the original game. This means you can no longer play lawful good merchant as you will never make money by selling an item you bought.
Edit: I found a comment on the forum. You can reduce the excessive camera spin by going to local steam files... WellingtonGame > Config (folder)> DefaultSystemSettings.ini and changing CameraSensitivity. I am experimenting with 0.65 so I suggest starting around that number. You have to restart game for changes to take affect. I did not see the other options mentioned in the comment for smoothing and acceleration so I cannot say if changing those would help.
Apparently the game really is a bad xbox port which is completely infuriating considering they already made it work on PC. You might try it with controller. I have not tried controller yet.
You can still get some enjoyment out of the game but curb your expectations.
I wrote the review because I do not want people thinking this is what the original experience was. The old controls used to work even if they were weird.
A banger of a game. Amazing story, OK visuals, good characters... You'll have fun even after restarting the game 10 times. Truly a masterpiece
Nostalgia game. Charming and simple but, c'mon, there are objectively better RPGs out there.
Love the Fable series, good old memories.
Aiming to replay the fable games before the new one next year. I remember playing this for the first time with my uncle and him being delighted / horrified as I chose every evil option available to me. Just as fun being evil and tormenting npcs as I remember.
Silly humour, replayable with different builds & alignments, interesting story (although pacing doesn't seem designed for you to sit & play for hours in one chunk as I tend to).
Wish 2 & 3 were also on steam. I also wish the achievements were less lumped together. To those unfamiliar with the fable games, I'd probably recommend starting with 2 or 3 as they massively improved gameplay & quality of life.
Fable is the classic tale of a humble kid who goes from chicken-kicking villager to legendary hero. It’s a game that gives you the power to shape your destiny – but let’s be real, most of us spent more time farting in front of crowds and getting bad haircuts than saving Albion.
The beauty of Fable is that it lets you be as heroic or as evil as you want. You can save villages, rescue damsels, and feed the poor. Or... you can set fire to said villages, marry the damsel just to divorce her later, and charge the poor for directions. It's a moral choice system where the most common option is "What can I get away with?" You start off as a young boy whose village is destroyed, leading to a life of adventuring and growing from a scrawny kid into a sword-swinging hero.
The real magic, though, is how the world reacts to you. If you're a hero, people will cheer and throw themselves at your feet. If you're evil, they'll scream and run. Either way, you're basically a celebrity, and it turns out that fame, whether good or bad, is just as satisfying. Who cares about saving the world when you can get a crowd of villagers to chant your name after you flex your abs?
Fable lets you get married and even have kids... though you can also completely ignore them, which is probably why the game doesn’t offer much in the way of family counseling.
As you level up, your character starts to change physically based on your actions. Be good, and you’ll develop a halo and glowing eyes. Be bad, and you’ll sprout horns and gain a permanent scowl. But no matter what path you take, one thing remains constant: the terrible fashion choices.
Your hero’s wardrobe consists of strange armor, wacky hats. It’s hard to take down a band of bandits when you look like a rejected extra from a low-budget medieval film, but hey, that’s just the Fable experience.
The most noticeable change in Fable Anniversary is the visual overhaul. The environments are more vibrant, the character models are smoother, and the world of Albion feels more alive than ever before. However, while the game looks better than its 2004 counterpart, it’s clear that this is still an old game at heart. The animations can feel stiff, and some textures don’t quite hold up to modern standards, but overall, it’s a pleasing upgrade that stays true to the original’s art style.
Albion is a vibrant, colorful place where the weather is always sunny, except for when it’s raining. The NPCs in Albion have no personal space, and they love to comment on your appearance or make fun of your hair, even though they have no fashion sense themselves. But no matter how famous you get, there’s always that one guy who remembers you as "the chicken chaser" – the guy who chased and kicked chickens in his early days.
Fable Anniversary is a love letter to fans of the original, offering a chance to revisit Albion with upgraded visuals and the same whimsical charm.
**Fable Anniversary – A Nostalgic Journey to Albion**
Fable Anniversary is a delightful remaster of the beloved classic Fable, originally released in 2004. This enhanced version brings a fresh coat of paint to the whimsical world of Albion while preserving the charm and engaging storytelling that made the original a standout title in the action RPG genre.
From the moment you step into the shoes of a young hero, the game’s vibrant visuals and improved graphics immediately impress. The updated art style enhances the enchanting environments, making the lush forests, bustling towns, and dark dungeons more immersive than ever. The improved character models and animations add depth to the storytelling, allowing players to connect with the diverse cast of characters in meaningful ways.
Fable Anniversary retains the signature humor and moral choices that the series is known for. The gameplay encourages exploration and experimentation, allowing players to shape their character and influence the world around them. The decisions you make throughout the game—whether to help a villager or pursue a life of villainy—create a personalized experience that feels rewarding and impactful.
Combat in Fable Anniversary is fluid and intuitive, combining melee, ranged, and magical abilities in a way that keeps encounters dynamic and engaging. The revamped controls make it easy to switch between combat styles, and the addition of a new save system helps alleviate some of the frustrations experienced in the original.
One of the standout features of Fable Anniversary is the inclusion of the "Lost Chapters" content, which expands the story and adds new quests, enemies, and locations. This additional content enriches the experience, providing players with plenty of opportunities to immerse themselves in Albion's lore and explore its many secrets.
The soundtrack and voice acting in Fable Anniversary are exceptional, adding to the game’s overall charm. The whimsical music perfectly complements the lighthearted yet sometimes dark themes of the story, while the talented voice cast brings the characters to life with memorable performances.
In summary, Fable Anniversary is a triumphant remaster that successfully brings the magic of the original to a new generation of players. With its beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay, and rich storytelling, it offers an unforgettable journey through Albion that will resonate with both fans of the series and newcomers alike. Whether you’re embarking on heroic quests or indulging in mischievous antics, Fable Anniversary invites you to explore a world filled with wonder, humor, and adventure. Dive in and rediscover the charm of this timeless classic!
I started out with Fable 2 on Xbox 360 and loved it, played fable 3 too. so when I saw Fable on steam I decided to grab it on sale. I enjoyed it very much and it was worth buying! I felt as tho the intro/start of the game was a bit slow but once I got out into the world is when things got fun!
Honestly I would love to buy Fable 2 & 3 as well if they'd ever bring them to steam!
8/10
I’ve been playing this game since it first came out on the original Xbox with the duke controller. I always come back to it, and enjoy every playthrough. Fable 2 and 3 didn’t quite have the same effect on me. Here’s to hoping the reboot is amazing.
One of my teenage years fav, great to re play and hear again the iconic phrases of “chicken chaser” love it, would play again and again
Its just like i remember!
Nice Graphical upgrade and the integrated controller support is nice.
Loved the original game but couldn't stand the shit optimization causing camera stuttering.
Brilliant remake of a brilliant game.
The DLC of costumes in the game gives me the ick, especially one which is just a recolor of another wearable set.
But its still a fab time. Where the series began, so much potential, pretty much all wasted (like nearly all the interesting albion history actually happens between games)
Sad though they never remade 2 or at least finally ported it to PC, it is my favourite, down by the reeds still haunts me. But its a game that is getting increasingly harder to play legitly it seems.
After 100% Fable Anniversary I would definitely recommend it, it's a really good RPG, I played it when I was a kid but never finished it so I'm glad I have, the story is good, the characters are good and the music is good, the combat is a bit outdated but works well and the controls are responsive. You can choose to be good or evil and your choices have consequences like the game says. Fable Anniversary isn't an open world game -it did originally come out in 2004 and was never designed to be an open world game but don't let that put you off it.
Fable has really good funny moments and its very British which I love you can hear all the accents from the UK in this game.
If you like RPG's Fable Anniversary is a must have if you were to ask me.
Fable AV is a great yet flawed experience. Fable OG was my first Xbox game and probably one of my first 5 video games that I played, I beat it as a child fell in love with the story, characters, humour and the world of albion. Then came Fable Lost Chapters which added more to a game i already loved. More Quests, Better Endgame, Better Gear and bringing in some characters that didnt get to shine in the base game was again just a cherry on top. So why not get Fable AV. It has all the content of Fable TLC so why wouldnt you. Well for 1 fable TLC is available on steam for far less money and to me is a much better experience minus a few things.
Fable AV VS Fable TLC
Fable AV being a newer updated version comes with some QoL feats such as Achivements, Format changes in settings and being newer it uses the Unreal Engine and controller support
however to me these are the only upgrades and the graphic upgrade is really up for debate as Fable and Fable TLC have a unique style that still holds up surprisingly well, which Fable AV kinda throws in the bin. Jack of blades voice actor is different i believe and dont even get me started on the beetles sound change.
No matter what option you go with you will have a blast and if your modding skills are even on a basic level id say fable TLC is way to go the only reason i have AV is achivement hunting and controller support which i didnt even end up taking advantge of due to an exploit with M&KB
Anyways dont let this deter your choice on getting this game either way youll love it and honestly if this is your first time playing it this maybe the better option
Bonus Build Tips and What not
For Fable AV if using mouse and keyboard nifty trick well buying and selling where u can switch between items and tabs to sell items for way higher values
have 1 potion and 34 green apples that equals having 34 potions it gets filthy
Healing spells work on Quest followers and bodyguards
The summon spell is broken when used properly and can obtain you a certain weapon before a certain quest if you know you know...
Demon doors are key to some of the best gear and items that being said im pretty sure best sword is still obtained by money and or COITUS
get Skorns bow by doing a sacrifice on a date with multiple of 6th i.e 6th night or 12th night has to be midnight better if youre neutral influence or on good side and sacrifice body guard i reccomend oakvale
Fishing is a blast and can get you some gold gear and helpful fish
the Bordello is a fun area if evil as it can net you a gross amount of money if waanting to not use gold exploits
CHECK THE GUILD FOR MORE QUESTS MMMM YES
Again have fun enjoy your trip to albion the series is all downhill from here with a steep drop after 2 lol but good god these first couple were special !!!
Fable Anniversary
great classic
loved this game when it first came out and it was still just as fun to play now
I put so many hours into this game as a kid. Untold amounts of hours. Probably like twenty playthroughs altogether. Such a fun game.

I tried and got my combat multiplier even higher. My health was low, I had potions and food. Real State.
It's okay. Mildly entertaining as a nostalgia purchase. Probably wouldn't bother getting it if you didn't play it during original release. Overall a soft recommend.
Been playing since i was 4 and im 21 now. played thousands of hours of this game on console and im in love. This is my fav game series ever and im so hyped for fable 4
We were on a picnic at Lookout Point when he found these... these strange mushrooms. Please, could you help us?
For an old console game it works great! It's a bit buggy at time but for one of my favorite game of all I cant complain
This game is very entertaining and there is so much to do it is well paced and challenging when it should be and its comedic timing in this game is perfect.
LOVED IT, bringg back memories from childhood ! 10\10 get it !
No other game has actually immersed me within a town and setting as much as this one.
For those seeking to replay their childhood games, a heads up is that once you get to the lost shore dlc quest your game will freeze. So far there are no fixes for this that I am aware of. You can play the regular game without many problems though.
One of the most fun RPGs I've played in a while. There is a whole lot of charm from the art style, the characters, the combat, and the morality system. While by no means perfect it stands out as one of the best games of its day and is definitely worth a playthrough.
TL;DR- Nostalgia only goes so far. The game is very dated, but playable. Played fine through the Steam Deck. Some simple achievements are impossible to get due to bugs not being fixed still, years later.
Nostalgia of the OG Xbox brought me back to playing this. In a lot of ways, it was great to try again, but when compared to anything modern, it was painfully dated, which is obviously not something I would consider to be the game's fault. But I was a little let down and generally frustrated by how easy the game was difficulty wise, yet incredibly hard when it came to stupid things like killing people you're trying to save because your attacks auto targeted them. I was very frustrated with the gameplay. The biggest reason I would not recommend is there are plenty of bugs that are still present in this version of the game. One of the biggest annoyances was that I was locked out of an achievement to collect all books, which still has no fix and the only other alternative would be to start the game all over again and hope it doesn't bug out. There were several issues I had that were also shared by other people in threads from 5-10 years ago, showing there is no intention to fix these things.
Anniversary edition got rid of hero saving, which was very disappointing. Also the worst UI of any game I've ever played.
I really have to say, that there is no reason to buy the anniversary. Camera shuttering and locked 60 fps, controls are pure shit. To me its not even 8€ worth. I recommend to play the original. There is no need to support this kind of lazyness. There is nothing better than the original besides the graphics and compare to its release date, graphics are pure shit. Dont get me wrong, the game by itself is absolute great, but this kind of "remake" shows again, how developers make money without investing much time. Just buy the original and mod it with graphic mods and you have the same result. Its more a scam than a remake, remastered or what the heck the devs want to call this. But clearly not good work.
It's a good classic, it might not have aged as well as I expected, but it is still my favorite Fable.
(Oh god, the Trader Massacre fist boast is still bugged. jeez louise.)
Unplayable due to terrible dizzying camera movements. It's a known issue using mouse/keys it wobbles all over and I couldn't get more than 1 minute into it before I had to refund it.
I'm sure that otherwise it would have been a fun game.
8.5/10 the nostalgia is insane and the fact that my nickname can be "arseface" is legendary. Story is a bit wonky at times but its still great. I had more fun in this game then I've had in many recent titles, so much to do in a game that was made this long ago is wild to me. these new developers are slacking !!!
Ah the Good old Days I remember playing the old version but now I'm Gonna Enjoy this in Good Graphics Thank you Gaben and Lionhead studios.
I still remember sitting in my friend's house when I saw the commercial for this game for the very first time. I looked at him and I said, "Bro, this looks stupid as heck. Who in the world would wanna play this trash game."
That was just over 20 years ago, and little did I know this game would become my favorite game of all time. I've beaten it on multiple platforms, and revisit it often. It's charming, satirical, and the combat is that perfect mix of just balanced enough to where you don't feel bored but just broken enough to where you can always clown around. I can't recommend this game enough.
Final thoughts: RIP original Jack of Blades voice pre-TLC, you are missed. <(-_-<)
