Space Haven

This fantastic game has you building the spacecraft of your dreams and exploring the stars. If you enjoyed FTL or similar games you will love this!
Do you wish you could role-play space smugglers and scavengers always on the verge of death with game play that mixes Sims, Dwarf Fortress and X-COM? Then, yes, I recommend this ^_^
The gameplay and the vibe are both really great. Much replay value and the updates keep getting better and better. Given the status of the beta I'm really at a loss for cons ~ will wait until 1.0 drops with all the features. Solid game.
This game is great as colony sims go, I just find it so mind numbingly annoying that there's no option to force people to fix things. One thermal regulator breaks and 2 seconds later I have to spend all the rare blocks I've gathered just fixing my ship because steel miraculously explodes when the air around it drops by 30 degrees. Also, It could totally just be a me thing so take this with a grain of salt, but it feels like resource dispersal is so barren if you don't turn everything WAY up. If I didn't find myself nearly maxing the energium spawns, I would barely make it out of the first couple systems before I am scraping the bottom of the barrel for energium, and quickly bankrupt myself attempting to buy more before running out. Otherwise this game is great, space colony games are such a vibe and this game nailed it.
I have been playing this game on and off for the last few years. I always liked the style and how brutal it could be. It could wipe a 40 hour session in 30 minutes if you rolled bad dices in a row. It was also infuriating because it was out of your control as a player.
With patch 20 a lot of content and balance got added to the game. I am really happy with the main story line that got introduced but still leaving you open to explore and roam. The game will still continue to throw curveballs at your, just now I boarded a tiny derelict wreck of about 20x20 with a maze of hallways and doors and a ton of creepers around the corner. Had to send in two squads to get the infestation cleared out. Nuts. I needed a 5 minute cooldown after that.
The balance is maybe a bit too friendly now. I am quite familiar now with what tech needs to get researched first and what you can sell in early or mid game and what to hold on to. But with the new hyperdrive, power and botany unlocked running out of resourced is something on the background now really. Not sure if that is bad or that I just had a lot of luck lately with resource spawning.
All in all, with patch 20 out now, this game has matured in a fully playable game with tons and tons of hours to spend on it. I think I slapped on 80 hours in the past two weeks. At times I have to remind myself I got shit to do in the real world. Been a long time a game drew me in like this.
10/10 would not recommend to people with busy lives :P
I had a ton of fun with this game even a year or two ago, now that it is at update 20 going to try it again and it looks like they have really added a lot. Should be a treat.
adding new features instead of working on the current clunky gameplay
(derelict only allow 1 entry point if no airlock, enemy boarding doesnt trigger auto battlestations so ppl just die one by one, solar is useless after the changes to it, spaceship cant recycle water, research skills are useless after you are done with the techtree (now even faster with the exo fleet), salvage/transfer/trade requires ship selecting each time, overall the game is just build to have 1 ship - as multi ship setups are just annoying)
The game basics are just not wokring. Crews like to chat instead of doing their jobs. Walk away from stations just to come back again, instead of staying and doing their things and priorities not wokring or multiple same stations not getting manned because of some unknown reason, until you set their priority to max. You would think basic game mechanics would be done after this long time. But no. Last time i played (alpha 13?) everything was fine, Now years later it's a bs game.
Really in depth and complex research tree. Quite challenging to maintain resources while expanding. I love the old skewl graphics. Absolutely worth buying.
I have liked this game for a few years. So excited when the update came through (I had not realised it was coming) with a core mission. May love it now. Now, to keep them all alive...
Bought it when it came out originally. The progress made and the QOL improvements are great. It feels like the "Save Our Ship" mod for Rimworld, but more fleshed out. Great stuff.
This is such a good, deep ship building space game... the only other one I know that surpasses it is X4 Foundations.
And this one is much easier to play. It's IMHO a better FTL in every aspect.
I love sandbox games and sandbox settings, and luckily this game gives great customized control over whatever experience you want out of the game via its sandbox options. I also love pixel art games, so win/win.
The gameplay loop is a little lacking. I never really felt desperate for materials or had to make decisions that really deeply impacted the game besides "build thing here, oh its in a tight space." You're not able to control the ship (you warp into a square and can't move unless you warp out) and at times it feels like a mobile game. You can draft the pawns and move them around but there doesn't seem to be a cover system when exploring derelicts so you're just standing in the open (though there are literal 'cover objects' furniture, they weren't on derelicts) and blasting at some bugs or bots. Overall, the fun seems kind of thinly spread over the entire game.
I love just watching my space people just go about their space lives. I have been following this game for quite a while and the devs are doing a great job making steady improvements and adding features. I really dig exploring derelict ships, finding aliens and robots, all while having that wild west space survival/firefly kind of experience. You have to keep finding food and keep getting paid and all you can count on is each other.
I like to play in normal speed because I like my video games to be chill, but you can fastforward to get through stuff faster. I am excited to see where the games goes, there is a good discord too. Give it a try, why not.
Been playing on the '20th Major Update - Unstable Branch' version — gotta say there's a lot of stuff to do in this version. I have to say I really enjoy management and building games, and here you're very free to do whatever you like with few limitations.
Overall, a very nice space ship simulator game. You can be a trader of goods or even people. Some balancing issues with resources and pay off like mining and growing food. Mining seems not to matter, yields are low and need you a lot of space just to grow enough food for the whole crew. What the bot chooses to take priority for Manufacturing also needs a fix. Even after setting priority to highest on turning ice to water, they just ignores it. I hope to have a better ship builder Perhaps building 2 - 3 level ships? only can build wide not tall.
Aliens and Bots hits are painful even with Armour on not sure the deal with having damage to stamina on hits. The crew just wants to sleep after being hit a few times.
Fighting ship battles needs some fixing, like turning off the target jamming device there is no on and off. Just choose not to power and wait. Which takes awhile. When you speed up and didn't realized that its off, the enemy ship have taken the first shot.
Sketching of ship needs an upgrade while able to sketch the overall design of the ship. Unable to place proxy of an item or walls for an overall design means constant saving and reloading if the sketch didn't work out as planned.
This game is an absolute masterpiece and getting better. I've played over 100 hours in the last 2 weeks which says something about the game, and also my desire for escapism, but let's focus on the game.
You build a spaceship. You jump from sector to sector. You stop and do some mining and trading and building and researching. You keep your crew happy with well-designed places for work, sleep and leisure. You keep them alive with oxygen, food, and temperature regulation, and defensive systems.
There are asteroids, aliens, robots, and pirates. After learning how to defend you can go on the offense and build forward bases. You can have a fleet with multiple capital ships. Your capital ships can have launch pads for smaller mining, building and starfighter ships.
I love that the AI behaves rationally. Your crew and ships act reasonably on their own, with the right design and high-level instructions. Nothing seems to be script. There can be some amazing moments of narrowly jumping out of a system as a giant asteroid is about to hit, or running to rescue a fallen comrade with an oxygen tank. These story lines happen naturally through the game. Things generally just work in a reasonable way, except when something real in the game world causes them not to do so, and that's where your challenge as the player comes in. It starts off reasonably challenging let's you explore into more challenging areas when you are ready. The game design and programming just amaze me.
I understand they are working on a whole set of missions and storyline in the experimental branch and I'm excited for it. I'm sure it will be awesome based on how awesome the game already is.
There is so much more that can be added in the future too, I hope the developers keep growing this game platform into the future. Masterpiece.
This game is a must have. The game itself is great. Space sim , colony builder , tactics , trade , missions. The best part is the developers have been constantly improving the game. They love there product and it shows. It says early access but this game is polished. Space Haven is in my top 5 games. If your on the fence just buy the game you will get many hours enjoyment.
Incredible game. Very similar to Rimworld, but in space and travel focused. Highly recommend.
I don't usually like to say a game is 'X meets Y' but I feel I have to here.
If you're a fan of FTL and ONI, as I am, you'll instantly recognise many of the features and feel at home with this gem of a game.
I'm seriously impressed with the scope, which is just small enough to be manageable and also whats on the table now, which is easily big enough to enjoy as it is. The devs are a small, agile and active team.
Two of my crew absolutely hate each other and they keep fighting so I have to put them on separate schedules. Starvation simulation is spot on. The AI needs work but that's true of a million games and is probably the hardest thing to get right, but while I find it frustrating at times, it can also be hilarious.
Tried to like it, really did. Feels more like whack-a-mole of problems as opposed to interesting challenges to overcome. Worth a try on sale, wasn't a waste of my time, but I can't recommend this.
I am not a big colony sim player; this is the first one I have played. That being said, it's a lot of fun, and the learning curve is challenging (for me at least) but fair. Once things start to click, and you understand the importance of research, comfort, etc, it's entertaining managing everything. I have put around 40 hours into this game so far, and I feel like I just started. I highly recommend giving this game a try.
Fantastic space resource management sim. Im not a big fan of these types of games, but something about this one just scratches a great itch and is so enjoyable. Tutorial is very good at providing vital information and teaching you how to play, which is super helpful.
The Pawn AI is better than Rimworld, or Oxygen not included. Never has a pawn died to their priorities. Everything gets done. The System lets you know when it is overloaded. The UI clearly shows the Backlog. I have not tryed ship to ship combat. This game is significantly difficult and fun with lots of room to grow. Give me a Stargate Destiny Drive and let me Journey to the beginning of the universe.
looking for a game like rimworld with save our ship 2 mod and yes i found this game, hope the future update will have more content and please add multilevel deck for better looking ships, and yes what makes a game like this will never die is the support from modders of course, hope in the future you can support mods and yes good job to you the team who made this game
A couple years ago I used to love playing this game, it was fun and relaxing. Now it's a Rimworld in space ripoff with zero of the polish and balance you'll find in that game. Everyone in your crew is always pissy or having a breakdown for the dumbest things, and equipment catches fire or breaks down every single day for no reason. As for balance, it has none. The game seems completely based on rng where luck decides if you run out of fuel, food, or the throw pillows you needed to craft so your entire crew doesn't completely stop working and all just lie down and die. As comical as that is, it makes the game seem just plain stupid. Don't set up an arcade machine fast enough because you're working on food or energy since they are both running out? Well looks like it's suicide for us all because nobody brought a book or deck of cards! It's like being Christopher Columbus with a crew of bored zoomers carrying lighters. Good luck, I just can't recommend it anymore.
If the Alien franchise had a Colony Sim this wuld be it!
I just hope the devs continue their good work and improve on it!
Excited to see what's in store for this Rimworld in Space game.
simple yet complicated, I likey
Awesome game, very addictive : ]
Great mix of base building, strategy, story, and action. Constant updates and feedback on behalf of the dev team is amazing.
Excited to see the keep working on this and make it better and better.
The multitude of UI issues, unhelpful hints, poor enemy, weapon and equipment variety aside, I struggled through trying to make the sandbox fun and having just enough success to keep going a little longer in the hopes that it'll turn actually entertaining, but no luck. The gameplay loop doesn't evolve, because it doesn't have many moving parts to work with. Manufacturing and selling plasma rifles and other weapons rakes in more credits than you'll ever need, economy is rudimentary.
The best part was ship-building, but since hull mass factors into everything from shields to hyperdrive power, so many builds just collapse into being squares or circles.
Combat, especially crew combat, is godawful. There's not much you can actually do to mitigate damage, even vanilla Rimworld has a cover system that can weigh the rolls in your favor. Haulers are cheap damage personified, you can dodge their charge and then they instantly hit you anyway. There's no actual tactical depth.
The last straw came when I played a bit of the story and rolled my eyes at the antagonists. Really, now. You couldn't come up with a less tired bunch of tropes that've been rehashed over and over since the 1970s? George R R Martin did Those Dumb and Stupid Space Christians Who Are Holding Us All Back 50 years ago, and he did it better. Too much to hope for a video game plotline with some nuance these days, I guess.
Five years in EA. Reminds me why I don't buy EA anymore.
My experience with Space Haven
1. Bought the game after seeing some of a play through online.
2. Launched the game.
3. Black window with no sound.
4. Looked for fix.
5. No fix found.
6. Requested refund.
0/10 Don't recommend.
Really have enjoyed playing as the game continues to be developed!
I just raided an enemy base along side a military alliance ship. On our way back we were: ambushed, boarded, swapped ships, fought a 20+ prisoner riot to regain control of our ship, and my scientist went on a solo mission to eliminate the enemy leader and rescue her best friend. This game is amazing.
I love how this game plays like a little software facilitated board game diorama with autonomous pieces playing their own rpg inside of it. Many games fit that description but this game delivers on that feeling for me. I now want to 3d print my own buildings to recreate my storied vessels as art pieces to hang up on my wall.
The only criticism I have is how long it takes to play the game, and how un-engaging a lot of that time can be. A lot of the challenges can seem unreasonably oppressive to a new player still trying to figure out 'how comfort plays a role in everything' or 'the value of spacesuits close by' or etc. Unfortunately that's just the pain you must go through to get to the "minimum viable ship" good parts.
More games need to be like this. I always love games with this art style. Super addicting, can't stop playing this honestly.
Most of my playing has just been designing space ships in sandbox mode. I'll get around to the other stuff shortly.
Great builder, alot of fun.
Amazing soundtracks
My favorite game so far. Hope the devs put more time and effort in, so it will be even better. Gets stale at some point, but the core mechanics are on point! :)
Great game, basically Rimworld in space. would recommend
Space Haven has one big problem you should consider before buying. It has no soul.
The first five minutes are the same as the last five minutes.
After about 20 hours of play: so what.
It does not inspire imagination, create wonder, or drive the player to continue. Compare this to games like Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, etc. where there is a journey, an arc. Space Haven has some of the same mechanics, but none of the soul.
Beat up some slavers. Don't want to take them prisoner so go to execute them.
Gun Jams.
Slowly fix gun jam while maintaining eye contact.
Blam.
I love how the exploration is a big part of the game and you have to keep trying to find materials to keep your crew alive on the ship.
Hate running low on water as it ends my play through XD
It's slowly getting better. Decent and chill. Difficult at the beginning, combat is very hard until you get your skills up and better gear. And a solar flare wiping out your entire crop cycle can be detrimental. Can feel slow and repetitive at times, best to play a little here and there. I think the best recent addition was the training machines. It was extremely difficult getting a lot of the command type skill up before this.
Things that still need improvement in my opinion. The shuttle default priorities. Quite often I have multiple people scavenging a derelict ship and are running low on oxygen, the shuttle would rather wander around collecting and returning scrap/items to the main ship than to go address the people basically dying on the derelict and bring them home or at least bring them oxygen.
The pop up messages offering quests like: transport cargo from one sector to another for the civilians never stop. It will say that you have 15 days to respond, but that never goes down and the game will perpetually interrupt your travels with this message over and over again. I'm not going back three sectors just to carry some cargo for a weak reward, why can't I say no thanks and dismiss this quest? Also, the quest rewards are pretty weak for the amount of time and energy you have to put into them.
Quests again: The military faction wants you to capture a slaver, OK fun to attack/board a slaver ship and bring this person back for justice, but it instantly ruins your faction with the entire slaver clan to -100 and you now have war status with them. They now attack you on site. The military faction gives you a weak reward of a few items and zero faction positive with them for your efforts. That's definitely not worth the trouble and I'll never do another one of those quests again. I think we should get a substantial boost to our faction with the military clan for doing these types of quests and essentially siding with them.
An asteroid enters the edge of the screen on a trajectory towards your ship, so the pilots jump in their fighters and begin circling the ship to destroy the asteroid. Why don't they fly out and attack the rock right away? Why do they circle the ship for hours (in game time) until the rock is almost right on top of the ship. There's a ton of wasted time here and frequently the rock debris still hits the ship anyway, because they don't engage until it's so close.
You're in a ship to ship battle, the pilots will jump in their fighters and basically suicide against the other ships point defense. Even when they take critical damage they keep circling the enemy ship getting pummeled and never retreat due to low life.
So yes, It's a decent little game, but I would recommend to the Devs to work on quests, shuttle behavior, and fighter behavior. These aspects could really use some attention and improvement.
Game feels like rimworld in space. All the movement and actions feel natural and smooth. Very enjoyable to build the ship and watch the crew walk around and perform tasks. combat has simple enemies atm. Graphics give the feel an awesome and chill late 90s vibe. Recommended
Relaxing games like this that can run on almost anything are awesome!
