Space Haven

Excited to see what's in store for this Rimworld in Space game.
simple yet complicated, I likey
Awesome game, very addictive : ]
Great mix of base building, strategy, story, and action. Constant updates and feedback on behalf of the dev team is amazing.
Excited to see the keep working on this and make it better and better.
The multitude of UI issues, unhelpful hints, poor enemy, weapon and equipment variety aside, I struggled through trying to make the sandbox fun and having just enough success to keep going a little longer in the hopes that it'll turn actually entertaining, but no luck. The gameplay loop doesn't evolve, because it doesn't have many moving parts to work with. Manufacturing and selling plasma rifles and other weapons rakes in more credits than you'll ever need, economy is rudimentary.
The best part was ship-building, but since hull mass factors into everything from shields to hyperdrive power, so many builds just collapse into being squares or circles.
Combat, especially crew combat, is godawful. There's not much you can actually do to mitigate damage, even vanilla Rimworld has a cover system that can weigh the rolls in your favor. Haulers are cheap damage personified, you can dodge their charge and then they instantly hit you anyway. There's no actual tactical depth.
The last straw came when I played a bit of the story and rolled my eyes at the antagonists. Really, now. You couldn't come up with a less tired bunch of tropes that've been rehashed over and over since the 1970s? George R R Martin did Those Dumb and Stupid Space Christians Who Are Holding Us All Back 50 years ago, and he did it better. Too much to hope for a video game plotline with some nuance these days, I guess.
Five years in EA. Reminds me why I don't buy EA anymore.
My experience with Space Haven
1. Bought the game after seeing some of a play through online.
2. Launched the game.
3. Black window with no sound.
4. Looked for fix.
5. No fix found.
6. Requested refund.
0/10 Don't recommend.
Really have enjoyed playing as the game continues to be developed!
I just raided an enemy base along side a military alliance ship. On our way back we were: ambushed, boarded, swapped ships, fought a 20+ prisoner riot to regain control of our ship, and my scientist went on a solo mission to eliminate the enemy leader and rescue her best friend. This game is amazing.
I love how this game plays like a little software facilitated board game diorama with autonomous pieces playing their own rpg inside of it. Many games fit that description but this game delivers on that feeling for me. I now want to 3d print my own buildings to recreate my storied vessels as art pieces to hang up on my wall.
The only criticism I have is how long it takes to play the game, and how un-engaging a lot of that time can be. A lot of the challenges can seem unreasonably oppressive to a new player still trying to figure out 'how comfort plays a role in everything' or 'the value of spacesuits close by' or etc. Unfortunately that's just the pain you must go through to get to the "minimum viable ship" good parts.
More games need to be like this. I always love games with this art style. Super addicting, can't stop playing this honestly.
Most of my playing has just been designing space ships in sandbox mode. I'll get around to the other stuff shortly.
Great builder, alot of fun.
Amazing soundtracks
My favorite game so far. Hope the devs put more time and effort in, so it will be even better. Gets stale at some point, but the core mechanics are on point! :)
Great game, basically Rimworld in space. would recommend
Space Haven has one big problem you should consider before buying. It has no soul.
The first five minutes are the same as the last five minutes.
After about 20 hours of play: so what.
It does not inspire imagination, create wonder, or drive the player to continue. Compare this to games like Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, etc. where there is a journey, an arc. Space Haven has some of the same mechanics, but none of the soul.
Beat up some slavers. Don't want to take them prisoner so go to execute them.
Gun Jams.
Slowly fix gun jam while maintaining eye contact.
Blam.
I love how the exploration is a big part of the game and you have to keep trying to find materials to keep your crew alive on the ship.
Hate running low on water as it ends my play through XD
It's slowly getting better. Decent and chill. Difficult at the beginning, combat is very hard until you get your skills up and better gear. And a solar flare wiping out your entire crop cycle can be detrimental. Can feel slow and repetitive at times, best to play a little here and there. I think the best recent addition was the training machines. It was extremely difficult getting a lot of the command type skill up before this.
Things that still need improvement in my opinion. The shuttle default priorities. Quite often I have multiple people scavenging a derelict ship and are running low on oxygen, the shuttle would rather wander around collecting and returning scrap/items to the main ship than to go address the people basically dying on the derelict and bring them home or at least bring them oxygen.
The pop up messages offering quests like: transport cargo from one sector to another for the civilians never stop. It will say that you have 15 days to respond, but that never goes down and the game will perpetually interrupt your travels with this message over and over again. I'm not going back three sectors just to carry some cargo for a weak reward, why can't I say no thanks and dismiss this quest? Also, the quest rewards are pretty weak for the amount of time and energy you have to put into them.
Quests again: The military faction wants you to capture a slaver, OK fun to attack/board a slaver ship and bring this person back for justice, but it instantly ruins your faction with the entire slaver clan to -100 and you now have war status with them. They now attack you on site. The military faction gives you a weak reward of a few items and zero faction positive with them for your efforts. That's definitely not worth the trouble and I'll never do another one of those quests again. I think we should get a substantial boost to our faction with the military clan for doing these types of quests and essentially siding with them.
An asteroid enters the edge of the screen on a trajectory towards your ship, so the pilots jump in their fighters and begin circling the ship to destroy the asteroid. Why don't they fly out and attack the rock right away? Why do they circle the ship for hours (in game time) until the rock is almost right on top of the ship. There's a ton of wasted time here and frequently the rock debris still hits the ship anyway, because they don't engage until it's so close.
You're in a ship to ship battle, the pilots will jump in their fighters and basically suicide against the other ships point defense. Even when they take critical damage they keep circling the enemy ship getting pummeled and never retreat due to low life.
So yes, It's a decent little game, but I would recommend to the Devs to work on quests, shuttle behavior, and fighter behavior. These aspects could really use some attention and improvement.
Game feels like rimworld in space. All the movement and actions feel natural and smooth. Very enjoyable to build the ship and watch the crew walk around and perform tasks. combat has simple enemies atm. Graphics give the feel an awesome and chill late 90s vibe. Recommended
Relaxing games like this that can run on almost anything are awesome!
A lot of the stuff you do in this game could end up on R/shitrimworlderssay
I like the concept of it. Seems like it's lacking in some balancing to me. I've read through other reviews and nobody else has mentioned the issue which bothers me the most. I spend all of my time searching for infra blocks in order to manage my thermal regulators. Usually 2 or 3 are broken by the time I find more. Now they're repaired but in order to be ready for the next wave I am searching for more. By the time I find more, 2 or 3 are broken. Repeat. Out of my 20 hours, probably 15 of them were spent searching for infra blocks.
Space Haven is one of those games you come back to time and again. Every time I do it's pretty much all I play fro several weeks. It can be a little daunting at the beginning but each play through is a new story for you an your crew. Die gloriously and make sure you get on well with the other faction (trade or die). Over all I'd give it a wow that's a lot of hours for $20/10.
I really love this game... however there is one thing that stops me from really enjoying this game.. that is being limited too only 8 ship points... so any mega ships you wish to produce is the only ship you will ever be able to use.
The BEST spaceship sim. There are others, but this one is by a long shot my fav. I hope the devs see it out of Early Access!!
Only 122.2 hours into this as I write this, but needed to let this out. Absolutely love these types of games. Very much X-com/Star Control/Sims-esque (with a splash of Tradewars, with very unforgiving mechanics (power/food/water/etc.), that you'll either love or you'll hate.
With other games out there, putting out similar vibes such as the evolving Quasimorph, I'm equally excited to see that Space Haven is still being worked on. It feels like I haven't even scratched the surface and with 3 absolute restarts as I figured things out (remember, early access! *lol*), luckily much of the figuring ends up being common sense once you put thought into it.
***
Though I would like to see more personal skills incorporated into the "character" building aspect of it, the ship building aspect is pretty fleshed out, quests will only be expanded on I can imagine during the road map of completion and the world foundation seems endless and easily expandable.
***
Items though lacking, I can only imagine can continue to grow with the research tree &/or release of content as worlds are explored/unlocked, etc.
***
The Sims aspect is a solid mention as your crew interact with each other, prisoners, slaves, various factions and the ever joys of trauma and conflict as you sail the stars! Definitely adds a twist to who can work together, who you put on first shift and second shift and night shift, hands down as you try to manage your ship(s)/fleet from system to system, I'm already contemplating breaking back and starting an "evil" run, thinking Borg-like. :D
Highly recommended if you are into any of the games above mentioned.
Somehow I keep coming back to this product
There's a fair depth to this, though like similar games, it can feel repetitive. I just enjoy keeping the crew members healthy and my small fleet functional. I've found Eden, but decided the Big Inky was a more fitting environment for the assorted lost souls that comprise my two crews.
it's very good.
Needs more different alien types / enemy types for sure. but everything in the game is super solid and enjoyable
Have enjoyed the peaceful playing of this game, as well as the ship building. Though eventfully I am hoping that I can create my own little empire in space. Would love to build a network of ships and stations independent of the in-game factions. Just a wish...
I have mixed feelings on this game, but I still view it positively overall. I think it's a good colony manager, that has has some interesting gameplay and clear untapped potential still. I've spent 35 hours on it, and have maxed out the tech tree and have seen most of what the game has to offer.
You'll spend most of your time excavating resources from asteroids and derelict ships, while waiting for new research nodes to unlock. You'll build out your ship so that you can pop down some new production facilities. And you'll trade constantly, which is honestly the only proper way to play this game.
The loop is fine, but this game feels unfinished especially when compared to Rimworld which this game clearly has taken huge amounts of inspiration from. It feels like they just randomly copied multiple systems, but they are basic bare bone versions, and don't seem to have a purpose in the game yet.
Mental breaks don't matter. The fires that break out, while they'll "break" objects due to smoke, they don't actually burn down anything. Combat is super basic and you'll have seen most of what the game has to offer by your fifth jump to a new node.
The game can at times feel awfully boring, when you realize there's no new challenges that will ever actually require you to think. Most issues can be solved by just fast forwarding, and letting your crew fix it themselves, no input needed from you. I have put the game in max fast forward speed and walked away for 15 minutes, knowing nothing bad enough to matter could happen in that time.
So the game feels unfinished when compared to Rimworld, where bad incidents happen all the time, sometimes through mismanagement, or pawns making a random bad decision near something dangerous.
But what is in the game right now, that does work right, does play pretty well. Research is good, gun augments, auto-priority for ship systems, trade supply and demand, gas exchange, and some systemic gameplay between factions and enemy types.
If they properly expand on and implement all of their systems, this game will be very good. It's been 5 years of early access though, so that's not great, but if the full release ever does drop I will definitely be re-visiting.
Very interesting life-on-the-spaceship game. A lot of attention to details of space-based wellbeing up to the carbs/protein/fat combinations in food and the consequences.
All in all, I did enjoy some of my time with space haven. Seeing a ship grow in scope and complexety has its charmes. The retro graphics are just right for me. I also liked space havens slower pace - it helped me relax as days closed out. The repetitive nature of crew combat with low enemy variety didn't bother me much as complex manoevering didn't really seem viable anyway. Frustrations mainly arose from the user interface: it took a lot longer than it might have needed to for me to learn how many of space havens systems function and interact (I even did the tutorial). To space havens credit, discovering these functions was sometimes fun. It was only in combination with a bug (point defense turrets just stopped working) that it started to be a problem: I assumed I had made a mistake and wasted hours. As a final point, I would like to be able to have much easier control over my crew. Until final release, I would like for the game to communicate its goals, systems and my capabilities more clearly, streamline the interface and reduce the number of bugs.
Crazy peak game, Rimworld but in space, honestly lot's to do, freedom to make your own story or to follow the main quest, just bought a few days ago and already 50 hours in, 10/10
The base game was pretty fun when I played it two years ago. It's been in EA forever and it doesn't feel any closer to release. Maybe I'll revise this if they make some actual progress.
Have you not played rimworld yet?
Go play rimworld instead of this.
Did you play rimworld and like it?
you will almost certainly like this too.
This game adds a lot to the rimworld formula and shows a lot of promise, but is somewhat hampered by its lack of quality of life features and endgame content/challenge. I find this shortcoming to be acceptable considering that the game is early acces, and look forward to continued updates fleshing out the content.
This game is why I no longer buy early access....
Space Haven, whilst still being in early access, is incredibly fun for those who enjoy games similar to Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress and other colony style management games.
Whilst i haven't played loads, i'm really enjoying what i have played thus far and really looking forward to seeing what the developers do in the future with it.
The pixel art is gorgeous and really highly detailed as are the background mechanics which i hope continue to evolve and get deeper and more complex and development continues.
quality in depth space survival game , good stuff
Amazing game. Simple yet complicated. Definitely itches the city building/survival itch
I love space management games where you get to manage a crew and in this one you can build your spaceship pretty much however you want. There's enough role play mechanisms with the crew to keep things interesting and you get attached (at least I do) to certain characters as you play through. It's still in alpha so it's not perfect and there are some design choices that are frustrating, but you work around them. The ship and system points are one of the frustrating mechanisms. The system points are fine. It does limited the number of large systems you can put on a ship, but otherwise you could just have a massive dreadnought that would roll over anything. I wish there were more core points so you could have a few more ships in your fleet. I recently found a way around this, by taking a contract where I linked up with some NPC ships from the military. We took out the original objective, but since I haven't gone back to collect the reward they are still in my fleet. We've been going around taking out pirates and getting into large fleet battles. I would recommend this game, but play it for the style of game it is and not what it isn't.
So, on my fifth try on medium (that is not medium), I had my longest run yet:
- My crewmate almost bleed out already after his first salvage battle with robots
- A facehugger gently greeted my crew in the middle of the night
- Everyone started conversations in the middle of the toilet under use
- Everyone started group farting and seizing (must have been a COVID variant)
- Crewmember just researched calmly during a huge airleak near him (really dedicated guy)
- Made the conclusion that GUNS ARE NEVER ENOUGH, but so is energy consumption - no fair deal there
- Pirates started to jump in to any location I visited and greeted me with guns loaded
- Pirates followed me into a military section and got wiped by soldiers - good loot by the way, made my run the longest, also THX for the weapons and material
- Micro meteor shower instanly ignited my whole ship (somehow survived)
- Overheating equipment instantly ignited my whole ship again
- Started managing heat, ship switched to reserve power due to energy overuse - again no fair deal there
- A robot variant named CHIMP pummeled my boardng crew into submisson (must be into BDSM) - saved them with last crewmember reminicsing on the toliet
- Stripped all delerict ships, mined all asteroids, traded evey inch of material possible, still run short on energy crysals, everyone died of asphyxiation
10/10 will do it again after my blood pressure stabilizes
Didn't realize I had dropped so much time into this game in such a short time. You get lost in this, in the best way. It's a resource manager (someone said a x4 game or something, like rimworld but i havent played that...yet.), so if you don't like literally going on self made side quests to make rocket fuel, you might not like it. Let me rephrase it, I was too busy trying to make solar panels to run my ship, cause lulz free energy. I was high on the want for power, burning through resources quick to built a power source, ignoring my current system...which does require fuel. Ive ignored most my ship at this point cause im hyper focused on one thing, that was not a smart move. My ship goes dark and says back up power....I zoom out and then I get a warning about my ships on fire. I had been sitting in a asteroid field not paying attention, getting beat up while making solar panels. Okay, i'll just try to hyper jump out of here, maybe recover and ...Risky jump, hyper fuel low. Whatever, run it. So after my ship was destroyed I started a new game, excited though. So yea, manage your resources and learn to control them...or die in space. Just get the game and make a sweet space ship.
There are lots of things keep getting added out, but there is absolutely no improvement of slice of life during the gameplay, and it's been since forever.
- Please let us un-equip the space suit on someone who's unconscious and is on the floor. I actually beg for this one plead.
- Please let the spacers to move over the chair that is on the corner of the room. The size 2 table's mandatory space is 5~6 by 4~5, not 4 by 3 to put all chairs, which is disturbing as hell.
- Please let us able to charge the robots just out from the generator's output as well as an alternative option instead of keep using the precious cell when its functions are terribly limited.
- Please let us simply make the peoples recover by staying in bed instead of forcing to use the medical bed as an alternative recovery option.
- Please let us make a station. Literally. Everyone knows carrying all that doo-das eventually make the ship overflowing with items while the ship is covered by cargo containers even out of the hallways.
- Please make a pipe line for the vents between the sectors of station, just like how the power cable works.
- Please let us have more enemy types, it's been a same thing over and over now days.
- Please let us have some sort of gas mask or such against the alien hive, if the dev can't really make sense of how hive in the vacuum infection happens even through the space suit.
- Please let us see the stats of the peoples if we choose to buy someone out from some places, like slaver's guild.
- Please let us have "medical area" like slave, prisoner and tourist area. Having infection related stuff going all about with the aliens but having the method to fix in the latest of the game, being the advanced medical bed looks more than giving a middle finger to the players by not having any other easier method to fix this infection.
- Please let us dismantle the broken machines even if it's going to be destructive and let out a scrap or even worse, nothing.
- On top of above, please let us high-prioritize the fix.
- Let us filter the incoming messages during jumps, these are more than spammy during the FTL jump.
Great game with a good balance and feel. Reminds me of Rimworld mixed with FTL
This game is very similar to Rimworld and other colony sim games but based in space, the concept is interesting and the potential for a good game is there.
Nevertheless;
After 4 years of early access this game still has the most mediocre combat I've seen in a game like this. As the player there is very little you can do in combat to mitigate damage or play out combat strategically.
Feels like Isometric Rimworld mixed with FTL or The Long Journey Home. Has been an enjoyable, albeit challenging, experience.
I wish character customization was a little more robust. Such as being able to configure characters and save presets.
This is a game where you're going to fail sometime, and reset. So getting your old characters back would be more nifty. Or being able to have a greater control on how you start things.
Beyond that, it's pretty nice.
It's not as good as RimWorld, otherwise I'd call it RimWorld in space, but it scratches that itch...
