I wanted to like this game. I'm a huge fan of every genre this game embodies, but this game is very unpolished, almost as though it's unfinished, and suffers from a lot of bugs. Additionally it's poorly optimized, and playing is a very frustrating and punishing experience. I couldn't recommend it for the full price, maybe if it were on sale for under $10. It had a lot of potential, but it's under-cooked.
It is extremely fun and can get hard as it progresses but wow, what a game.
I rarely do negative posts, but unfortunately I had to make it for Universim.
It was my childhood game, I played it from it's release and loved it as a kid. A while ago I decided to revisit it and bought it, after playing for a while I got bored and waited for the major update they promised. After it released I played it too and here is what I can say:
BAD STUFF
1, Interiors: Early game (stone age) you can look inside of houses which is pretty cool, before the update it always had the same stone age interior throughout the game which was obviously a bug. Many players including me expected that after the update the interior would update and you would be able to see nuggets (game people) inside do nugget stuff. But no, they just made a new research option that prevented you from looking inside when you reach medieval.
This is not a big issue, but I just wanted to address that.
2, Different paths: In the game you can choose different research paths, but there is clearly a good path and a bad path, it feels forced. And they barely impact the game at all, some of them don't even make sense, like a nuclear power plant polluting the air and the ground around, whereas in real life the nuclear energy is incredibly clean. (nuclear waste is a separate thing) The research paths were made so each game felt different, but honestly they don't do much at all. So every game feels repetitive
3, Simulation: nuggets (game people) are just incredibility stupid at times, and you may end up in a situation where half of your population dies because they are too lazy to walk over to the reservoir and drink some water.
4, Road building: You can't build roads, and it can become incredibly annoying at times. The roads are already premade when a world is generated and you need to follow them in order to get a somewhat functional network.
5, More stuff: There is a lot more stuff, but for the sake of the length of this review I will not include it here, if you have any questions ask them in the replies/comments to this review
GOOD STUFF
1, Visuals: The graphics are good, and don't have overly toxic colors (yes Far Cry 3, Yes crysis. Im looking at you) which would eat your eyes and brain out.
2, Ui: The layout of the buttons and other stuff is easy to understand and look nice. The game is not complicated as HoI4 for example.
3, The music: The stone age and medieval soundtracks are good and CAN get repetitive, but are still fine. The modern and future soundtracks though will cause permanent ear and brain damage.
4, The complexity: The game is not complicated, but has just enough features to keep you entertained.
5, Stuff to do: You can do a lot of stuff while your nuggets evolve: go UFO hunting, look at lives of nuggets, explore the planet, trade with other civilizations and start wars. The game is really fun in this category
6, More stuff: Same as the "BAD STUFF" if you have any questions make a reply/comment and I will be happy to answer!
Why bad review?: The game is NOT BAD in my opinion, if steam had a neutral review option I would gladly choose it. If you think that Universim is your type of game, go ahead and buy it! Universim can and WILL be fun, but there are way too many promises that were never made, and too many bugs in my opinion. I truly feel bad for leaving a bad review, the Crytivo team visibly worked hard on this game, but unless more stuff is changed/added, my review will stay negative.
Thank you for reading, and have a great day! Hopefully I helped you decide if you want or don't want to buy the game.
This is one of the few VERY fun and well made god sims its unique and at some point frustrating i will say but its so fun
The game turns out to be a civ game with god powers, however it is childish, with boring tasks and a research tree where you need to wait a specific amount of time to research (without any way to speed things up, in the end unless you skip some technologies you will spend a determined amount of time in each age and the game only allows up to 2x speed)
It's a nice little mix between Dwarf Fortress and Spore, laid back game, I'd enjoy it more if the other civilizations were more expansive honestly. More challenge maybe? I think both, the planet cracker and the quests themselves glitched for me. Colonized five planets and I'm basically just, expanding more at this point. Got it on sale, would recommend that in this case to switch things up over a weekend. That sort of game.
Its alright if you're bored and don't know what to play or your friends are playing something you don't play. I made it to the end game if you are thinking about playing make sure before you start the world give yourself unlimited CP that makes the game feel more like a god sim. If you don't have much imagination then the game will be boring for you after the end. its Universim not Earthsim so get the planet cracker working and go to war with your neighbors.
After spending 30 hours with The Universim, I hoped to uncover a game that lived up to its promise as a god-game with endless possibilities. Unfortunately, my experience fell short of expectations, leaving me underwhelmed and disappointed.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was the round Earth navigation. While it may be a creative choice meant to add realism, it felt clunky and unnecessarily difficult to work with. Personally, I would have much preferred a flat earth-style map, which is more intuitive and easier to navigate in similar games. The current system made managing the planet more of a chore than a joy.
The gameplay itself starts off engaging, with the initial stages offering a sense of control and curiosity. However, the progression quickly loses its charm. The mechanics grow repetitive, and the mid-to-late game becomes a grind without much payoff. There’s little to incentivize continued play, as the excitement of discovery fades and is replaced by monotony.
The visuals and concept are commendable, but they can’t carry the experience alone. While there’s clear potential in The Universim, it lacks the depth and variety needed to hold players’ attention over the long haul. For a game that promises god-like control, I often felt more limited than empowered.
In summary, The Universim may be worth a try for those curious about its premise, but don’t expect a game that will keep you hooked for hours on end. If the developers refine the navigation and introduce more dynamic gameplay elements, it might reach its potential. Until then, it’s hard to recommend beyond a casual glance.
Rating: 5/10
great game i love it so much fun helping or being mean to your nuggets you get to build buildings wherever you want alains are in the game
Barely recommending it:
The game is beautiful and chill but unfortunately falls short as a city builder or anything that's challenging. I'd expect 5-10 hours out of it if you want something to relax but don't expect a revolutionary challenge underneath.
The presentation of the game and design is outstanding though. It's visible that a lot of work went into it. Don't go into this to expect a populous, black & white or spore game.
It's very linear, very pretty and occasionally quite funny, but it's not a challenging city builder.
I’ve been trying to get into a good management game for a while now. The last one I really enjoyed was Planet Coaster, and I’ve been craving something that could hook me in the same way.
This game starts off a bit slow, but once it picks up, it gets seriously cool. The mix of city building and god-like control makes for a pretty unique experience, and its pretty nice to see your planet getting shape.
If you’re into strategy or management games and don’t mind a bit of patience at the beginning, this one’s definitely worth checking out.
Would Highly recommend. The God Powers are fun, you can just sit down and watch if you want, They research their own stuff, You dont even need to play god if you dont want.
This game is fun. It has it's perks that keeps me coming back but once you've restarted once or twice then you know the routine.
The SAD Thing is I can never really get past 200 nuggets. Performance drops to absolute shit, FPS dips so low that time slows and I literally cannot play the game anymore. I cannot make it to space because the game cannot handle it. The only game I have this problem with.
This game reminds me of Black & White but really can't be compared. This game seems more akin to Age of Empires type of city management rather than being a God. It's more like the devs just make the nuggets acknowledge the creator instead of you being invisible and omnipotent. You can fling them around, be evil or good, etc. But it just didn't hit me like B&W did back in the day. The narrator helps with the immersion of being THAT God but, in my opinion, I just don't feel the similarities. B&W seemed more focused and story driven while this game seems more management/simulation driven with some story bits attached. You're the Mayor of SimCity but you have the power to kill your citizens in a much more direct way. That's about it.
Tried reinstalling, tried using a different SSD, different planet sizes does affect performance but even at small, I can't get to space without frustratingly giving up due to horrible performance.
I'll check back in a year. Maybe the game will be a bit more optimized.
Rather flat for a God Game or City builder. No easy way to keep track of useful statistics, no real building synergies or requirements outside of basic resource inputs, no dynamic interactions with how you play the game and what state of affairs you set up outside of prescripted events.
If you want a surface level sandpit to play around with, complete the research tree and call it a day this is fine. You won't find anything deeper than that here.
Honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I've played this years before the full release and its been cool to see the progress made on an already fun experience. This is one of the few games where the creators care and want to give the best game possible. If you haven't already, its worth a look and purchase.
Absolutely wonderful, and unique game. I like how you can guide what happens, but never control. 9/10
It's like a cute and very short version of Civilization. Would be ok but while the game lets you go to space, the computer won't let you fix all of the horribly generated roads and road problems. Can't connect bridges, roads disappearing, lots of things not working. I started a second game because the first one was unfixable, by the same progress point the second time I found the game a little boring already.
Great world building game. Supreme sense of humor that doesn't take itself too seriously. Mechanics are simple and the Nugs are not bright.
It's fun but very clearly unfinished and I personally don't like the way they try to force a story into a god game, but I love building my city and managing my nuggets, so it's hard to give this a thumbs down.
It's a bit far from perfect, but it would be easy for most people to get 20-30 hours out of it. I didn't experience any bugs or glaring problems, but it did take me a while to understand some of the basics like how to get the roads to look correct (I was building in their path and cutting them all off).
What kept it from being perfect?
- There are a lot of different resources to juggle and your mine is only going to chug a very short while before you need to demo it, salvage it, and build a new one.
- I love intervening to save my nuggets from a catastrophe... but they couldn't do ANYTHING themselves. I didn't enjoy placing the majority of the buildings like Engineers that keep your buildings from decaying. That's nugget work. I would have liked to been able to play more of the divine observer role if I felt like it.
- The quests were fun the first time through, but one of them for some reason didn't work. I probably missed a step. So I couldn't get the sweet ability to make my nuggets all immortal and I don't want to do all the quests a 2nd time.
- Lunar colonizing was amazing! After that, I constantly had issues and had to run back to every planet like a pinball solving minor problems. Maybe there's a better way to do it, but I couldn't figure it out. The logistics were fun though. Glass Planet needs food!
Absolutely addicted to this game but my only real complaint is that I'd like to be able to control when and where residential buildings are built.
I'm tired of constantly needing to deconstruct their residence to place my own things.
Really awesome god game, it just takes a long time to advance. I've played for 6 hours and am still in the stone age. Keep in mind, I'm not a speedrunner XD
This game is top tier, mostly because you get to do everything you want, from natural powers to building a megatopia! They also have bug fixes and updates frequently (1-2 in a quarter of a year), i recommend this game if you are a sims 4 or a city skylines game geek!
The Universim is a pretty solid game overall. It does a great job of balancing chill vibes with moments that keep you on your toes. It’s super fun to play, and I got a good 30 hours of enjoyment out of it.
That said, the last 5 hours or so started to feel a bit repetitive for me, especially after researching all the tech and sending off my first rocket. At that point, the gameplay slowed down and became more of the same, which is something I’ve noticed with other colony sim games too.
Still, I’d say it’s definitely worth giving a go. For the price, it’s a solid experience with plenty of fun to be had before it starts to taper off.
This game is fun a nice colony manager that doesn't take a lot of time to understand and can occasionally make you think about future planning. This game however falls short with things to do. After reaching the space age you plateau with new techs and anything interesting after it. The last goal is to start colonizing planets and as such you are doing the exact same thing you just did on your starting planet again and again and again. You are meant to establish trade routes between planets to support needs of production but traveling between planets can take up to three minutes of loading and this grows old after your second or third planet. not to mention a lack of information panels and a heap of bugs this game still has. I would say buy it on sale 50% or more otherwise it just isn't ready yet.
a very good game.
so bad that after an update you cant play your saves and you have to start all over again...
it is an amazing game, but, it's not great for people who are impationt.
Really good simulator, relaxing and calm, perfect when you have hard day or when you love something creative
It has issues, but still a fun game to waste some time on. Relaxing gameplay, and once you understand the tech tree, it is really enjoyable. Some chances for messing up but after a playthrough or two you got the basics and barring a bad disaster you can manage everything easily. Not for the hardcore sim-realists, but well worth the purchase price if you enjoy god games or city builders.
This game is fun. I've always loved god games and watching your empire take over a planet and then self expand is great.
I've had a good time playing this civilization builder. Fairly original and quite humorous. Would recommend if you enjoy this type of game.
Lots of mutually exclusive choices that really shouldn't be. Why can't I pick two different power sources? Technology isn't a straight line, devs.
Didn't even bother getting to the space stage. Power management is completely unfun if you're trying not to pollute. Also, your people shouldn't get scared of you for casting literal life-saving miracles.
Cheeky game play with personality enough to make you mad and also make you laugh. great time killer.
Fun little world sim. The narrator can get a bit old on repeat playthroughs and i wish you could disable his voice. That being said I really enjoy this game.
Great game. Really good to lie back and enjoy also almost no bugs
I love the game but the only problem is the nuggets dying from drinking the lake water and dying from hunger. I have so many eatery's, farms, reservoirs, water pumps and hospitals to combat the issue but nothing seems to work. I can go from a 500 populated city then 10 mins later i'm down to 300 because of the nuggets drinking the lake water and dying from hunger even though my world is filled with eatery's, reservoirs and water pumps etc. Other than the issue I stated I really do love the game and wish this issue can be fixed.
Probably one of the best God-games out there. The game is a lot of fun, there are plenty of quests, the upgrades are progressive, and the devs have worked on this game consistently, updating the game all the way to full release. With all the updates, it now feels like a fully released game, but I am excited to see if they add any new updates in the future. This games is a 10/10 for me, as it hits all the checkmarks for a great god-game. I highly recommend picking this game up for yourself!
Love the game, each time you start a new game every story will be different
You will create a own story for each time you play it.
There will be a person that will quit your civi and you can decide to be enemy or friend. Sometimes they just wants to kill your civi because yes.
Fun and quirky god-game-meets-city-builder. Doesn't capture the magic of Black & White, but does help scratch the God Game genre itch a bit.
hard at first, but really fun afterwards
Amazing game-play, this game is loads of fun!
Really awesome gameplay and a refreshing change from CS. The nuggets aren’t exactly the brightest and die pretty easily. It’s impressive how the adventure starts in the Stone Age and ends in alien worlds.
Nice chill little game.
Like, very chill. If you're looking for difficulty, then look for another game!
If you like god games, then it's a decent one.
Wait for sales to get it, though.
Its a fun game that is worth the money.
a bit tricky from time to time.. but really enjoyable.
Such a disappointment. There's not much agency for the player so choices feel hollow. It got old quickly.
Universim is a fun game full of content and stuff to do you can choose your way of playing the game focusing on weapons and destruction or peace and innovation. Overall a great god sim.
Juego bastante interesante. Desde la frescura del cielo vas hacer capaz de guiar a tu civilizacion mas alla de las estrellas. Es un juego muy colorido y alegre. Adecuado para relajarse y ver como todo prospera de manera natural.

Fun to play, difficult to master.
Very satisfying once you get the hang of it and get your civilization running "smoothly"
