Pretty cool that Paradox shoehorned in their awful launcher so now my game won't launch from Steam. Truly incredible player-focused design from our favourite Swedish game former-developer.
if you enjoy the survival type or builder type of game you will enjoy this one here is a hint start off small
Great game, though the only thing I'd usually tell people is that don't start with the biggest map. The game lags so bad when your prison gets bigger.
Haven't played much to give it an in-depth review.
few hours
Best Bits..
Options (so many now).
Building the prison.
Watching the wee builders on full speed (should be allowed to search staff maybe a drug test now and again).
Watching the prisoners kill each other.
Watching the guards kill the prisoners.
Figuring out how to make them not die as often and make a profit by tasers and better security planning!
Discovering servos!!!!!
That day i found out if i put the protected custody in permanent lock-down as punishment they wont starve to death instead of a full lock-down regime!!!
Deployment planning for patrols.
MODS!!!!
Finding a tiny K-9 crap.
Watching my first death-row get executed.
Gang warfare.
Bits i just tried to cope with...
The times my favourite prisoners got parole.
Gang warfare.
Locking-down for my first death-row execution.
Few bugs-maybe, (could be the mods).
No surprise sex, (no mod).
Can't get a prison bitch (no mod).
Never once did anyone drop soap in the shower room and again (no mod).
Can't give the guards the big-D and blackmail them for contraband (no mod).
Not one black prisoner in a wheelchair with dreads. (no mod).
Not enough K-9 choice.
too many MODS.
Late for work. (Was too busy waiting on the second Prison-Architect release, which i'm sure will be in a few hours also)
Overall after the couple of hours i played. I would recommend this to any sim builder, lazy gamer and even power hungry maniacs that just want to know what prisoner is gonna be first brutalised to death in the new prison because the save files getting named after them.
Would happily give my few hours a balanced score of 10/5
I don’t quite understand why, but Prison Architect is rather fun. Building and planning the prison can quickly become chaotic, especially in multiplayer, but it can be fun, even if ethics become a bit murky. There are 18 achievements, which are mostly fine but couple of them are quite annoying collectibles.
I really enjoy this very addictive game, but the interface is SO BAD it often surprises me how clunky it is. The game is amazing and entertaining, but occasionally tedious with things which could easily be fixed by devs. For example one of the strangest things is that the objects menu doesn't actually show you all the objects available, eg. it only shows a regular bed and you have to type 'bed' into the search bar to show the other kinds of bed.... It's very odd, and sometimes still come across items I didn't even know were in the game because they aren't shown default in the objects menu. There are many minor lazy oversights like that which build up rapidly due to the repetitive nature of these kinds of games, to make the game even more tedious and time consuming to use, but it's still very good game and highly enjoyable if you like these kinds of micro-management games. In fact it is probably a good thing to have these tedious factors, otherwise the game would be so addictive that I may have starved to death playing it by now. The little tedious breaks allow you to regain awareness of the outside world and of how many hours may have passed by accident (which happens really badly with this game!!!! Set a timer!!!)
Overall a great game, but impossible not to notice the unpolished state of it, so if you, like many Steam users, are the kind of childish gamer who is easily emotionally disturbed by games which aren't perfectly to your liking, then you should avoid. Otherwise enjoy :)
I would not recommend this game to anyone who doesn't already own it.
Ever since paradox became the publisher this game has gone down into the gutter. A very long time ago this was mostly a project spearheaded by two devs, whose devlogs you can still find on youtube to this day.
Unless you're playing the base game, this isn't worth it. and i am extremely unhopeful for prison architect 2. i will continue to play this game until likely a better one comes out; as there truly isn't anything like prison architect.
This is, honestly, an amazing game, at least the base game. So much care, effort and polish put into making a sturdy foundation that was ruined by EA Style DLC.
Many years ago this was my introduction to Tycoon Games. I love how grungy everything is, it oozes a kind of honesty you don't see anymore. Everything has a sound associated with it, and despite the very simplistic art-style, it all fits together so well that it gives off an unmistakable vibe. (again, exceptions for certain DLC packs)
The core game is simple, yet filled with so many complexities you need to learn to actually create a functional prison. I love it to bits, and it hurts to see that ill never really get new content i'll like.
If you can stand the crap, i guess it's worth it. But i don't feel right encouraging this publisher to keep buying out Indie games and shoving them full of garbage. it's a pretty horrible tactic, and it's starting to show it's faults.
Maybe i'll be proven wrong and the up and coming sequel will be this amazing thing;
but it comes across like they don't have any understanding on what made prison architect actually fun in the first place. The trailers look terrible.
Very relaxing and satisfying game. 110% Reccomend to new and average gamers!
Prison Architect, developed by Introversion Software, is a unique and deeply engaging simulation game that places players in the role of a prison warden, tasked with building, managing, and maintaining a high-security facility for criminals. What sets this game apart is its intricate blend of construction, management, and moral dilemma, creating a fascinating challenge for players who enjoy both strategic planning and problem-solving.
Gameplay and Mechanics
At its core, Prison Architect is a top-down simulation game where players are given the responsibility of designing and managing a prison. Players start by building the basic infrastructure, such as walls, rooms, and utilities. The ultimate goal is to create a facility that can house and rehabilitate prisoners while keeping operations smooth and ensuring the safety of both the inmates and the staff. As the game progresses, new challenges arise in the form of more complex prisoner needs, legal requirements, and occasional riots or escapes.
The game offers a highly customizable experience. Players can design each aspect of their prison, from cell blocks to dining areas, staff rooms, and security systems. The in-depth building mechanics allow for the creation of highly functional or morally questionable facilities, depending on the player’s choices.
Key Features:
Prison Construction: Players can design every aspect of their prison, from basic layouts to detailed room types like solitary confinement, infirmaries, and holding cells.
Staff Management: The game requires constant attention to hiring and managing staff, including guards, chefs, doctors, and maintenance workers. Balancing the number and efficiency of staff is crucial to prevent unrest.
Prisoner Needs and Behavior: Prisoners have individual needs, including health, hunger, and mental well-being. Managing these is important for preventing riots or escapes. The game features a psychological depth where prisoners can engage in violent behavior, protest conditions, or even become leaders of gangs within the prison.
Research and Upgrades: Throughout the game, players can research new technologies and upgrade systems like surveillance, security, or rehabilitation programs. This progression adds a layer of depth and keeps the game engaging over long periods.
Prisoner Reform: One of the more complex and morally challenging aspects of the game is prisoner rehabilitation. Programs like education, work, and therapy can reduce recidivism rates and improve the general quality of life for inmates—but they come at a cost.
Graphics and Design
The visual style of Prison Architect is simple yet effective. It uses a blocky, pixel-art design that suits the game's tone. The character animations and interactions—such as guards patrolling, prisoners working, or the occasional scuffle—are charming in their simplicity. The user interface is intuitive, with various menus and tabs easily accessible for managing different aspects of the prison.
While the graphics may not be cutting-edge, the art style complements the gameplay and the simulation elements. The game’s visual approach is functional, with a focus on clarity to help players navigate the complex systems in place.
Challenges and Realism
One of the game's most engaging aspects is the challenge of balancing a prison's efficiency with its ethical and humanitarian aspects. As the warden, you’ll be faced with difficult choices. Do you focus on making the prison a high-security fortress, or do you try to offer rehabilitation and education for the inmates, potentially reducing recidivism in the long run but making your job more difficult in the process?
The game’s management system is deep, with various moving parts such as budgets, safety ratings, prisoner needs, and staff morale. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially as your prison grows and the number of inmates increases. Riot prevention, fire hazards, and escape attempts are constant sources of stress that demand quick thinking and adaptability.
Additionally, the game includes elements of unpredictability, with random events like prisoner escapes, gang violence, and fire outbreaks that challenge the player’s ability to adapt and overcome. These events make the gameplay feel dynamic and alive, rather than static.
Sound and Atmosphere
The audio design in Prison Architect complements its grim atmosphere. While there’s no vocal dialogue, the sound effects—ranging from the hum of machinery to the clanging of prison gates—add to the immersion. The background music is subtle but fitting, building tension and giving the player a sense of unease or satisfaction depending on the state of the prison.
Multiplayer and Modding Community
While Prison Architect is a single-player experience at its heart, the game also has a thriving modding community. Players have created custom prisons, new gameplay mechanics, and even entirely new systems to expand the base game. Additionally, there’s a competitive multiplayer mode where players can either collaborate or compete to create the best or most efficient prison.
Conclusion
Prison Architect stands out in the simulation genre due to its unique setting, engaging mechanics, and moral complexity. The game offers a rich, rewarding experience for players who enjoy building and management games, with the added layer of tough ethical decisions that make every choice feel impactful. It’s a game that asks players to not only create a functional prison but to consider the humanity of those imprisoned within it. With its deep gameplay, robust customization options, and ever-evolving challenges, Prison Architect is a game that offers hours of entertainment and reflection.
Pros:
Deep management and construction mechanics
Engaging moral and ethical choices
Strong modding community and ongoing updates
Immersive atmosphere
Cons:
Can become overwhelming with larger prisons
Some players may find the pace slow or repetitive after a while
Overall, Prison Architect is a highly recommended title for fans of management sims and those who appreciate the complexity of balancing logistics with social responsibility.
good game but it copy and paste when compared to games like this.
There is one thing I dislike which is you can only have one prison save file, but other then that the game is amazing and addictive, I hope they end up adding basements, and 2nd floors for solitary, etc.
I give up now. Restarted , googled, googled more, started a new prison, a new again and again and again and it keeps saying at least one of my new prisoners dont have a free cell so they keep standing handcuffed in the streets even tho theres plenty of free cells. I have built new ones, changed them to low security, built solitary cells, holding cells. NOTHING works. And its not the only bug. Uninstalled and wont try again.
Challenging yet fun with added extras within the storyline
can't get past the 1st campaign mission (crash same place everytime)... tried getting help on the forums, got harassed instead.. tried report... got banned...
game is basically a true prison simulator
Now uses that stupid paradox launcher. I instantly hate this game now. I am done buying any game associated with paradox. The overpriced DLCs that plague all their games were bad enough and now we have this shit. Fuck you Paradox
a prisoner completed 2 years out of his 3 year sentence, went on parole and had it denied. Proceeded to murder both lawyers and get 2 extra murder charges making him a maximum security prison with 50 extra years to his sentence, instead of just waiting out his last year. PEAK!
Great game! Enjoy building and managing prisons of a variety of sizes, decide how to run the prison, and try to meet goals by reforming prisoners while still ensuring they receive punishment for their crimes. Level of difficulty can be so broad, depending on what kind of challenges you want to face. Would recommend the game and most of the expansion packs to anyone who enjoys build/manage simulation type games.
Amazing game, but a bit confusing at first. Other than that, it is really fun, I love it!
I love how engaging and detailed it is, you can really play however you want once you have the basics down. Great with friends but there are some crashing issues when going online but that's okay.
Great. It's even got a story. Cool graphics
Gameplay and DLCs have generally been fun.
However, I have been unable to play recently due to a "Sprite Downscaling" popup. It explains its due to too many mods taxing my GPU. However, I have no mods installed and my GPU is only ruining at 20% with the game on. Looking online, it is disappointing that this issue has not been handled since at least 2021.
I cannot interact with the GUI due to this issue, and unforgettably cannot play the game. Without a patch to fix this, I cannot recommend playing the game.
Super Buggy, for example Food not being delivered from Kitchen to Serving Tables in Canteen. Some of these bugs are game breaking and you have to restart the whole scenario.
Many users online says, that bugginess got worse with every update.
Amazing gameplay. If you look past the exorbant price the experience crippling bugs and the tons of DLC this game could be REALLY FUN. I'm telling you if they fix some of the bugs (and possibly drop the price) this game would be AMAZING. Plus i think 2D prison architect is more wholesome than the 3D remake so PLEASE COME BACK!!!!!
As a former prisoner who will soon be serving a new sentence, I will say that this is a good game, in which prisoners are beaten less than in reality.
I really like this game, personally I love giving solitary confinement to people who don't deserve it and also executing them.
(I'm Joking)
The game has good game play but there are so many bugs, UI is bugged (Link: https://steamusercontent-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/31057903958966043/992E09ECDD432677B531C5949FFA46150B547D41/) A hot mess. Tried to get a refund but one of the bugs is that games tends to run in the background even while playing other games causing refund to be rejected. It's unfortunate for this game but I actually am removing it from my list and blocking it. Such bad support and programming.
its a very fun game, i like the style of the game too!
I chose Yes on Do you recommend this game because this is fun to play if you enjoy this type of games.
BUT, it seems that they've stopped updated it since a long time ago. And the community of this game is small, so you'll probably have trouble with understanding how to play it for some more advanced functions.
Full blown economy, logistics and segregation gameplay.
I find myself coming back to Prison Architect all the time. Great game play, easy to adapt to, lots of ways to play, and create your own challenges.
i like to play the way a capitalist would, maximize profits at all costs
So excited for the second game, to play this in 3D has me hyped!!
This is a great game! Totally "game changing" mechanics from the other strategy games of the time.
a very robust yet reasonably simple management game that really makes you FEEL like the Prison Architect
hye i just want tell there have bug when player adjust at ratio off prisoner intake the time countdown have decrease but in loop
Its a nice game to zone out and play, but the controls could be configured better
Fun concept but honestly extreme lack of depth except “optimization”.
If you just wanna make prisons this is cool but if your looking for actually solid simulation games look else where.
Best mode is where you can play as a prisoner and that gets old after like 2 escapes.
Can’t recommend it with the high price tag.
I love neglecting my prisoners just like I neglect my child.
- Have a low security inmate in my prison
- That inmate starts destroying his cell door for first time
- I think "eh normal prison activities"
- I was wrong
- Stephen Welch the prisoner starts destroying his cell door every one hour
- I start watching him
- I put him in a permament lockdown
- That ain't doing anything
- I assign a guard
- That won't stop him, he will do anything to escape
- Turn freefire so armed guards will be able to take him down if possible
- Welch calms down after some time
Even though the determination and of Stephen Welch and risk he took won't be forget there.
10/10 would see a person like Welch again
The core game is fun to play. I just bought the expansion, but I'm rating it like 4/5. It's buggy. 1) cancel a building before you start building it and it doesn't refund you. Enable the Prison Log on "Policy" and it auto closes the Reports view. With that said, the game is buggy with the expansions, but still fun to play. You could spend all day just building your prison, farming, and never play with prisoners - more of a challenge when you do, but potentially you could just turn on Staff needs (to make it challenging) + temperature, and build green power + farming fields to earn money, and never have to deal with prisoners messing things up...Lots of ways to play the game. It's as much fun to build as it is to play, imho.
It was once a great and promising game until paradox bought it and turned it into a DLC simulator....
Sorry I just can't in good faith recommend this to anyone even though the gamplay is/was good.
It's fun to play at the surface level, including the story mode. There's a lot more optimisation as you go deeper if you are into that, but you can enjoy it either way.
Tried playing it for 80-ish minutes and it's just so buggy. Not intuitive at all either. Not for me.
Requires a third-party launcher to play, which will auto-update as soon as you try to run it. What is this doing in a single player game? Not worth the hassle.
imma keep it a buck and some change with this one, this game is so fire. you get to not only manipulate your victims, i mean prisoners, but you get to do it LEGALLY. and just making a full on prison full of lunatics is kinda silly, and you dont even need to buy dlcs for it to be fun, they just add to the funness. anywho yeah this game fire yeah woohoo booyah.
This game can keep you playing for hours and hours and helps you learn different ways to run all kinds of different style prisons
If you plan on buying the game to play with your friends you better pray to god and hope the servers don't choke and die when you finally decide to play it
I would argue if it's worth the full price, but got this at a discount for under 3$ and even if it was 10$ would still be a great experience.
For a Paradox game, it's really not overwhelming, while still being deep enough mechanically, amazing replayability and, for me the most surprising part, a great story mode to get you through the game.
Recommend for sure.
8/10
The display just won't work. I can't see the top of the screen in windowed and when I do fullscreen my cursor disappears. I do not feel like dealing with another buggy game. Tried to look for fixes online but nothing worked. Immediate refund.
I really want to like this game, the concept of a management sim based around prison industrial complex is clever and it´s nice to see someone trying a more dystopian/dark/challenging theme for the genre.
However, other than the usual paradox complaints you´ll read here. The game is broken!
You´ll spend half your time reading steam community posts about "Why (insert thing) suddenly stopped working" and how you can work around the bug. as soon as one thing has been resolved, you find something else broken.
A quick google about the 2nd bug I´ve encountered in one session (builders just gave up constructing things in the middle of something, even though there is access, funds and supply) and I´m greeted with a post from someone who has been playing the game since 2013 and the issue hasn´t been resolved even though they´ve tried both console and PC editions.
I´m happy I got it on sale and enjoyed the few hours of campaign mode before I got into the broken mechanics of the actual gameplay. It´s frustrating to play because it has so much potential but is broken up by clunky bugs and technical barriers. it´s difficult to get into a flow.
