TV189 is a short action game set in a dystopian near-future. Created by a passionate solo indie game developer, TV189 features 9 carefully curated levels designed to help the player master the art of intuition as their skills are put to the test with close-quarters combat as well as puzzle based gameplay. I believe the player should be in the centre of the experience by including a skill tree: giving you the choice between strength and ammunition abilities.

The game features a thoroughly written story expressed through a mix of voice acted cutscenes, in-game notes & documents in an expansive, constantly evolving plot. From waking up in a morgue at an underground facility to going on recovery/assassination missions, TV189 utilizes a range of gameplay types oriented around a variety-driven user experience.

Exploration into the map is rewarded with much-needed ammunition and transmitters. Use these transmitters to upgrade your character either to conserve ammo more efficiently or regenerate health faster with 15 different skills to learn and unlock, with 2 final 'master abilities'.


You wake up in a morgue months after working in a covert operation in Timalyun, Russia. Infected with a new mysterious virus, your body was isolated and contained to stop the disease from spreading. The Russian Front Force (R.F.F.) are a independent terrorist organisation threatening mass-destruction to the world stage with a mystery biological weapon dubbed 'TV189'.

However, unbeknownst to them is that your developed immunity means you can enter Timalyun and other R.F.F. controlled areas without danger of infection. Using this new founded ability and backed by several UN nations you must execute a cloak-and-dagger operation to put an end to the R.F.F. from the inside. From repossessing ill-obtained cash and servers to climbing onto the roof of a compound to access the venting system in an assassination assignment , TV189 presents a variety of level types and styles, each with their own themes, locations and atmospheres.


Since early access, TCG has worked hard to include a wide variety of new features to enhance the game; each level has received a complete overhaul, with new levels being added and certain scenes not making the cut leading to a refined experience including:

  • Full Inventory System with a large arsenal of weapons.
  • Skill Tree System which allows specializing in strength and ammunition abilities.
  • Dynamic Levels, where danger may be around every corner.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Scenes featuring a mix of long range & close-quarters combat.

TV189 isn't the game I expected it to be, not in a sense that it was better or worse, just different. I picked it up on sale expecting the usual indie game experience but I've just finished it and I felt like I should write a review. It felt somewhat nostalgic to play, and it felt as if the core concepts of the game were similar to that of ones I used to play on my PS2.

The gameplay is unique in its simplicity, it's something you can play out the box without having to look at the controls, but still manages to achieve depth in it's story and characters. Don't get me wrong, it's still an indie title, if you're looking for AAA voice-acting and photorealistic graphs, this won't be your cup of tea, but if like me you're seeking something different then I'd 100% recommend giving it a try, I got it cheap on sale and finished the game in under 3 hours.

There are however, some downsides to the game. It crashed in the middle of my playthrough but thankfully I had made a save and sometimes the AI bugs out a bit and acts a bit derp but other other than that I think it was made quite well. Surprising that it was a solo dev too, seems like a passion project.

What made my playthrough a memorable one was definitely the indie feel, all the voice actors are the same person, the cutscenes are derpy, but it's glaringly obvious that someone spent a lot of time making this, and you can see the efforts in the variety of levels, gameplay styles and missions.

Im giving this game thumbs up, because it totally playable Gameguru game :)
It's small-scoped, but enjoyable experience;
Equipment and skill tree add a little bit of depth to the gameplay. Combat is similar to every gameguru shooter, but - because game got small well optimised levels, it can be pretty dynamic and entertaining.

I hope the game will get some updates in the future, 2-3 levels more would be nice, because right now it's very very short :)

So I played the OG version of this (4 hours long) and found it fine as a basic run n gun albeit with barely any story. That version is dead however, as the creator's hard drive failed and lost the majority of the game. 2 years later, and it's shown the growth this guy's had in development. Actual voice acting instead of a robot voice, updated graphics, more story/lore, although still not much, and solid gunplay.

Still, some things are rough, models, VO is still fairly amateur, and some QoL things need to happen(ESC should let you enter and exit a menu, autosave after each level/key points. Fire mode should actually be identified instead of the button just playing a animation, more medkits, and some minor sound effects issues).

That said, this new version is leagues ahead of the original creation and well worth the two bucks extra now. I'm excited to see this developer grow as time goes on.

This game is quite fun but it does have its problems. NOTE: I am aiming this to be constructive criticism

Pros:

Fun combat with interesting weapons and challenging enemies.

An interesting concept for the story

The sniping was really good.

The look of the game is consistent with the graphics and the UI design, nothing felt out of place.

Interesting mechanics

Cons:

Enemies do way too much damage but can be easily beaten if you're far away (makes the first level a challenge but in a good way).

No auto-save (game crashed on me and i didn't save for like 2 levels, my bad).

The story seems to fall apart after the first level, the virus seems to be forgotten about straight away and the whole premise of what is shown at the start seems to trickle away over time.

Some mechanics, like the ability trees don't seem to be relevant to the game (I literally forgot about them after the first level), maybe have "n skill points remaining" in menus or as a small part of the HUD. I didn't really come across the transmitters either that often, they were a bit sparse.

Enemies were either sparse or packed.

There didn't seem to be any actual puzzle besides moving an item out of the way from a doorway, this could have been really cool too!

The only med-kits i found were in the first level!!!!!!!

MISC/Please fix:

Hitting escape should make you get out of each menu, it just feels alien to use the same button to get out of the menu with that i used to get into the menu with, or have both. The sensitivity seems to go way too far down when you aim down sights. The load times are a bit too long. Enemies weapons should be a pickup, like how the ammo is a pickup. Not all green crates are ammo crates, even though all of the models of green crates I saw were relatively the same model if not the same model. All pickups shouldn't require the user to "look" at them but just walk over them to pickup.


Why i suggest it:

It's literally made by one person! And for that I commend the developer on the game they have made! There's actually structure and substance to the game, it's not a cash grab like a high majority of indie titles on steam. This person actually cared about what they were making when they were making it and you can tell that. I know for sure if they keep making games, it will only get better and better. Also, please make a game that's only based around the sniping from this game, cos using the first sniper in the open map you get it in... it was satisfying.

Yep, once again it's Gameguru .

Please dear Dev(s), you put me on an open map looking for 10 or was it 15 keys??? The fog is a smart trick to hide the fact that the engine cannot handle big open maps. But having to go hunting for keys, without any markers and very low visibility, is bad game design.

Ai is non-existent, get a sniper rifle and shoot all enemies from a distance, no challenge or gameplay there.

I will probably never get to the later maps, because well on the first map even with the flashlight on it's hard to see things. But I hope you improve this product in the future because it's a no-go for me.

*Edit/update* As answer to the dev's response. I appreciate the fact that you accept criticism.

And I'm not here to just say bah, this is a bad game. I do not develop games either, but I did do some level design. I actually played through the whole game this afternoon. At least I think because when I killed the bad guy at the end I could not progress due to invisible walls and nothing happened.

So if you wish to stick to this engine...
The only tips I could give is to either loose some of the key hunting(or at least make the keys glowing objects). Make enemy placement better, don't spawn 100 random enemies just to make the game a bit more challenging. And about the AI I'm not sure I have no idea how the Gameguru engine works so, but let's just say it's not that good at the moment.

I wish you the best of luck with this game, and I will make sure to check out when the game gets updated. But as of now, many people will simply give up in the first few levels, so I sadly cannot recommend this game.

Read the whole thing before passing judgement.

So let me be clear, this isn't a good game. Not good in the sense that it fails to meet much of the the basic criteria most people set out for their game. The performance isn't great, which is alarming given the graphics are straight out of 2002. The assets (sounds, enemies, walls, obstacles, buildings, and skybox) are clearly not original and seem to be placed throughout the maps with gleeful abandon. Enemy AI is about as simple as it could possibly be. Gun handling is static and flat. Honestly it feels like a bad mod for Half Life one.

As for the story/gameplay itself, well its a good thing the player moves like Usain Bolt on cocaine because the entire game (as best as I can discern) consists of moving across large labrynthe like maps finding keys (small, easy to miss) before backtracking to the starting area to unlock doors. The only story I got in my short playtime was Microsoft Sam's robotic giving me a sentence or two about an area I am entering or perhaps a cursory overview of my mission, oh and also that the RFF are bad.

There was no story that I could make out. Had I not reread the store page description I would have had no idea who my character was, what he was doing, or why. Certainly I did not encounter much in the way of an emotional journey. Clearly as you can probably see I did not spend much time playing this game. I made it through all of the first level and much of the second level before I called it quits on the repetitive shooting at enemies from outside their vision range.

Imagine you spent an afternoon in Garry's Mod placing down prebuilt objects and HL2 enemies semi randomly. That seems to be about what this game amounts to.

HOWEVER, It seems clear to me that this game is not trying to be something that I am criticizing it for failing to be. I purchased it on sale for 89 Cents Canadian, and I got my money's worth in 30 minutes of amusement. Moreover It is clear to me that the person who made this game is perhaps early on in their career of designing games. To that person, if they are reading this review I have only words of encouragement to give. While lacking in many areas of design that a standard game would have, it has a nugget of originality and is clearly a milestone on the path to actually good creations.

To the designer: Good job, keep making games,

To the interested customer: Pass on this unless you are very passionate about half life one mods and/or reused source assets.

It's a Game Guru game so if you go in not expecting much (like I did) I think you'll find enough here to be pleasantly surprised about. There are only a tiny handful of Game Guru games that I've gotten any kind of enjoyment out of and I must say - this is one of the handful. The AI isn't fantastic and there's not a ton of challenge in it but if you want to play something mindless for a little while and just blast dudes and zombies away in various levels - this might be the game for you. It's fairly cheap and easy to play and I enjoyed what I've played of it.

I'd probably give it a neutral rating if Steam had one but since it's either recommend or not recommend I'm giving it a recommend. Check out my videos if you're on the fence (if it says one of the videos is "deleted" it means I'm currently uploading another video in the series. I'm not sure why but when an upload for a series is in progress, Youtube likes to list that video as "deleted" if you go to the playlist. Sorry about that.)
