Build, explore, survive in this terrifying first person survival horror simulator.
Key features
Enter a living, breathing world, where every tree and plant can be chopped down. Below ground explore a vast network of caves and underground lakes.
- Chop down trees to build a camp, or start a fire to keep warm. Scavenge food to keep yourself from starving.
- Build a small shelter or a large ocean side fortress. Lay traps and defences to keep a safe perimeter.
- Explore and build during the day. Defend your base at night. Craft weapons and tools. Bunker down during the evening or bring the fight directly to the enemy.
- Defend yourself against a clan of genetic mutant enemies that have beliefs, families, morals and that appear almost human.
- Use stealth to evade enemies, or engage them directly with crude weapons built from sticks and stones.

Survival part sucks, and what made me the most angry is when me and my friend built traps to farm canibals for bones. And after we killed a couple we got attacked by the mutant, so we loaded to the time when we killed the canibals but were not attacked by the mutant yet, but while the traps were activated the canibals bodies were not there anymore. (very nice how the game remebered the traps were activated but the bodies were removed)
Caves suck, I dont mind geting lost in a cave, but when the caves are designed badly, were you just slip of some cliff cus of some bug is annoying.
Story sucks, not just cus you need IQ 10000 to understand in game, but even when you watch the explanation on the internet, you realise the story sucks in general.
MY POINT: good idea, done badly
The story feels a little bit lacking and the building part is unfortunately kinda limited. But all in all it's a good game.
Ah, The Forest. The survival game that starts with you crash-landing in the middle of nowhere and ends with you screaming into the void while being chased by naked, mutant cannibals who’ve taken one look at you and decided you’re tonight’s entrée. I came here to build a cozy log cabin and maybe roast a squirrel over a campfire—not accidentally stumble into a cannibal family reunion with zero warning.
At first, the game feels almost peaceful. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and you’re merrily chopping down trees with the strength of a lumberjack hopped up on pure adrenaline. But then nighttime hits, and you quickly learn that "darkness" in this game is just a fancy term for blind terror. What’s that sound? Oh, it’s nothing… except for the horrifying screech of something sprinting directly at you while you trip over your own panic.
The gameplay loop is brilliant yet sadistic. Build your base! Gather resources! Feel accomplished! And then watch in horror as a gang of cannibals dismantles your entire operation like they’re participating in some kind of HGTV "Extreme Home Destruction" show. Pro tip: walls are merely a suggestion to the mutants. They’ll tear through your defenses faster than you can scream, “NOT AGAIN.”
The survival mechanics are brutal but rewarding. You’ll learn to cherish every rock, twig, and questionable piece of raw meat you find. And let’s not forget the combat—because nothing says "primal survival" like swinging a rusty axe at a six-armed mutant while wearing its friend’s bones as armor. Immersion: 10/10. Therapy bills: pending.
And then there’s the story, which begins with a desperate quest to find your kidnapped son but somehow evolves into a deep, disturbing mystery full of bizarre science experiments and body horror that would make H.P. Lovecraft proud. I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say the ending leaves you staring blankly at your screen, questioning everything you’ve done for the past 20 hours.
Would I recommend The Forest? Oh, absolutely. If you enjoy beautiful landscapes, intense survival mechanics, and the constant feeling that you’re being watched, this game is for you. Just don’t get too attached to your sanity. 10/10—nature is terrifying, and I love it.

Late on my review on this game but it's nearly 2025 and I still highly recommend it. Delivers everything you'd want from a survival/horror experience. Great story although you have to piece most of it together yourself.
Highly recommend - Especially if you have someone to play with otherwise it's also a good solo game!
Good story, good gameplay, simply too good. Definitely give it a go.
good game but kinda dated compared to other survival games, better in vr.
If you go straight for the story the game is quite short, but there's so much to do outside of that, there's lots to explore/craft/build. I would recommend getting it on a sale (usually around 4-5 euro).
This game is absolute trash. Bugs out the ass. If you're looking for a guide on shitty design choices, check this one out.
I ended up on the remote island after a plane crash. I wasn’t looking for peace—I was just trying to survive. On the third day, I ventured deeper into the forest when I saw it. A figure in the shadows, tall, with glowing eyes. It was a feature featuring the creature. I froze, my heart hammering. It didn’t move, but I could feel its gaze burning into me.
I turned to run, but as I sprinted through the trees, I heard it behind me. Its footsteps were fast, too fast, and the air grew cold. My legs burned, but I couldn’t stop. Then, it appeared again. This time, closer, its pale skin and jagged teeth visible in the dim light. It was a feature featuring the creature.
I stumbled, nearly falling, but somehow kept running until I reached the shore. My heart raced, and I collapsed onto the sand, gasping for breath. But it was still there, watching from the forest edge.
With a trembling voice, I shouted into the empty space, “What’s the jiggle jiggle skin?”
The silence was thick, then a low voice answered, “Glizzy.”
I froze, my body going rigid in shock. I had no idea what it meant, but the strange, eerie tone made my heart nearly stop. I almost pissed myself right there on the beach, too terrified to move.
this game was very gud 10/10 story BUT they should remove trees faliing on structures
best story survival game 10/10 always play with atleast 1 friend
One of the best survival horror games ive played. Great story everything except trees falling on the house... 10/10

very fun and charming game. it does have some little bugs every once in a while but i think it adds to the charm. the canibals can be very spooky some times and the mutants are even scarier. overall a W of a game imo

This game is so realistic that even the girls are running from me just like in real life :D
Finally got women chasing me around naked. But worth it. Even if she cannibal. 10/10
its like naked and afraid they drop u and strip u butt booty naked and some red man lubed up with diddy oil and foreskin juice stole your son diagnosed with autism. Then you got to find him and tickle and slap the red man big booty cheeks but you had to fight all these big juicy ass monsters and get all these cool toys to fight all these ppl, so basically unlocking a better advantage of them and you can go ham and give them ultimate backshots like that one guy "you digging in me, you digging in me." Then you have to go through this big fucking tenacle boss fight and slapbox with the red man covered in diddy oil and foreskin juice. Then boom. 10000/10 game I lost so many chrodkamfasosekmes and I infact wanna participate in something like this. if anyone knows events like these please reach out to me.
One of the most fun, if not the most fun survival co-op games I have had the pleasure of playing with friends. Even if you are playing this game in single player, it is still one of the most fun I have ever had in a survival/horror game.
The game Has some bugs but other than that its a magnificent game
favorite game of all time, better then subnautica and green hell by far. Story is amazing and game is not too hard.
i love eating people its actually an amazing moment in life when u kill someone eat themand use therer bones for armor 10 out of 7 very good game much repeck
Huuuuue fan of this. Super atmospheric, solid story, for $4 on sale it's an absolute no-brainer.
Only possible downside is that online co-op with friends is a little clunky, since one person manages the save so that person ALWAYS needs to be on if you play with a group. Very minor overall though.
Pretty fun game and considering you can play with friends its way funnyer(don't mind my english skills). I love how its a story base game to so theres actually objectives to get to and after you beat it you can continue to play the game as it gets harder. its honestly perfect and the graphics or wonderful! And if you don't wanna play with anyone its a solo based game to its perfect .
Its an amazing horror game as every movement of the trees and animals seems like the enemies coming closer. I have no desire to finish it however. This mostly comes from how fun it is to play multiplayer and goof around by building what our hearts desire. We mostly do base defense and hoard resources while hunting crocodiles.
I personally would recommend this game to anybody seeking out a casual gameplay session with maximum tease. This game genuinely made me the hardest any game has ever made me. I haven't really gone in depth on research but I wouldn't be surprised if this one game of the year. The female cannibal models are really next level.
A classic. Way better than Sons, which is simply impossible to enjoy because they made it too hard.
This was a close review. Honestly just skip this game and play the sequel, you can summarize the 'story' aspects you'll miss in about 5 minutes.
The Good: It is pretty scary, cannibals are scary, monsters are scary, some decent jump scares, creepy ass story. Theres a lot of cool unique items to kind of upgrade your character as you go.
The Bad: We had well over a dozen 'stucks' and crashes throughout our playthrough, which with limited save points is quite punishing and time consuming. A little guidance at the start on where to go or how to get started would be nice, its VERY vague of how to even begin or approach the story. The UI in general is pretty dated and awkward to use, Especially crafting. Overall, the game is pretty forgettable.
Great game, it can be brutal until you get past some of the initial difficulty when playing solo. Once you get a solid base setup and learn the game's mechanics, you will really enjoy it.
Solid crafting system but the game would have benefited from a few more recipes for early-mid game. Would have loved some better wooden armor and better craftable & non-craftable lighting options too.
I don't recommend wasting time and energy on the traps unless you have a ground base in really tough area.
Explore as much as possible once you get a decent base going as all the best weapons and items are found not crafted.
At 47 hours single-player so far, haven't made too much progress in the story, but the open world survival, crafting and base-building is really fun. I can see myself sinking a lot of time into this. Also, the atmosphere of the game is very immersive. At 47 hours, it doesn't get old yet, I still occasionally get scarred by cannibals that sneak up on me at night time.
One of the best survival games out there, many will say sons of the forest is better but I think they are both very good games. I recommend you try this game with friends and without knowing a lot of stuff since it can be very funny and scary. (buy this game when its on sale)
I built my house in the cannibal camp and then wondered why there were so many cannibals (I thought I had taken over the camp)
fun in multiplayer, kinda boring in single player, I'd suggest getting it on sale
this game is amazing and terrifying at the same time and you should play it.
Your average survival game. It's pretty fun and I definitely recommend it to others. Co-op is fun as well, but it does crash when exiting and entering caves/different areas pretty often so I would save pretty frequently, that goes for both the host and any players joining.

1. Concept and Gameplay: 8/10
The Forest is a first-person survival horror game that blends open-world exploration, resource management, and base-building mechanics with a gripping survival narrative. Players are thrust into the role of Eric LeBlanc, who survives a plane crash only to find himself stranded on a mysterious island. The island is inhabited by a variety of hostile creatures, including cannibalistic mutants, and the player's goal is to survive, find their missing son, and escape the island.
The game has a strong emphasis on crafting, scavenging, and building, where players gather materials to create shelters, weapons, and tools. As the game progresses, the environment becomes more dangerous, with the island's mutated inhabitants becoming more aggressive. The survival elements are balanced with moments of intense horror, as players explore dark caves, encounter terrifying creatures, and uncover the island's sinister secrets.
The crafting and building mechanics are intuitive but deep, allowing players to construct elaborate fortresses or simple shelters, and providing a sense of progression as they gather resources. The day-night cycle also adds to the tension—during the day, the player is focused on gathering resources, while at night, the island becomes far more dangerous, with creatures that attack under the cover of darkness.
While The Forest is primarily a survival game, it also introduces horror elements that heighten the sense of dread. As you explore the island, you encounter disturbing visuals, unsettling sounds, and eerie atmospheres that keep the player on edge. The survival mechanics, while not groundbreaking, are well-executed, and the story behind the island’s mysteries adds depth to the experience.
2. Atmosphere and Immersion: 9/10
The Forest excels at creating an immersive and unnerving atmosphere. The island is beautifully crafted, with lush forests, rocky cliffs, and dark caves that make exploration both rewarding and terrifying. The natural environment feels alive, with animals, changing weather patterns, and a dynamic day-night cycle that impacts gameplay.
The horror elements are what truly set the game apart. The cannibal mutants, with their grotesque appearance and erratic behavior, are truly terrifying, particularly when you hear their eerie, high-pitched cries in the distance. The sense of isolation is palpable; you’re alone on an island, with no clear way of knowing whether you'll ever escape. The occasional encounters with these creatures are tense and unsettling, often making players second-guess every decision they make.
The game does an excellent job of using sound design to create tension—rustling leaves, distant growls, and unsettling whispers all contribute to the sense of dread. The deep, dark caves you explore are also incredibly atmospheric, with limited light sources making every corner feel like it could hide something monstrous. Whether you're exploring the wilderness or building a shelter, there’s a constant sense of vulnerability, making every encounter feel more intense.
3. Story and Characters: 7/10
The story in The Forest is minimal but intriguing, with players piecing together the narrative through environmental storytelling, clues, and journals found throughout the game. You start with a simple personal goal: finding your missing son, Timmy, who was taken after the plane crash. As you explore the island, however, you uncover dark secrets about the place and the twisted experiments carried out by the mysterious organization behind the mutants.
The main antagonist in The Forest isn’t a singular figure but the terrifying and dangerous island itself, populated by hostile creatures. The game doesn’t force the story on you—it’s more about survival and discovery, and it leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Some players may enjoy this more open-ended storytelling, while others may find it lacking in depth, especially when compared to games that focus more heavily on narrative.
While the game doesn’t have an extensive character-driven plot, the story’s atmosphere and mystery add an element of intrigue that keeps players invested in uncovering the island’s dark history. The survival element is the primary focus, and the story is more about understanding the world you’re trapped in rather than following a traditional character arc.
4. Multiplayer and Cooperation: 8/10
One of the standout features of The Forest is its multiplayer mode. The game supports cooperative play, allowing players to team up with friends and survive together on the island. Multiplayer mode is an excellent addition, as it brings an extra layer of strategy and fun. Players can collaborate on building shelters, gathering resources, and fighting off mutant threats, which makes surviving much easier than going it alone.
The multiplayer experience also amplifies the horror elements, as the dynamic between players can create a sense of camaraderie or tension. While working together can make things easier, the atmosphere of dread never goes away, and you’ll find that the game is just as frightening when you’re playing with friends. The fear of the unknown, combined with the unpredictability of the AI-controlled mutants, makes every encounter with the enemy exciting and unpredictable.
That said, multiplayer also introduces some coordination challenges. If your group isn’t communicating effectively, it can lead to frustrating moments, such as running low on supplies or getting caught unprepared by enemies. But overall, The Forest is a game that shines when played with others, and the cooperation aspect brings a lot of enjoyment and replayability.
5. Replayability and Longevity: 8/10
The Forest offers great replayability. The procedurally generated world means that each playthrough is slightly different, with varying resource locations, mutant spawns, and random events. The game doesn’t hold your hand, and while it’s possible to rush to the end, players who take their time to explore the island will find that there’s a lot to discover.
Building structures and experimenting with different playstyles adds a lot of longevity to the game. Some players may enjoy focusing on base-building, while others might be more interested in exploring the island’s caves or hunting for supplies. The ability to play multiplayer with friends also increases the replay value, as the dynamics of survival change when there are more players involved.
However, the game can feel repetitive over time, particularly if you’re playing solo. While the atmosphere and world are immersive, the core gameplay loop of scavenging, crafting, and surviving may eventually wear thin for some players, especially after completing the main objectives.
6. Bugs and Performance: 7/10
In terms of performance, The Forest generally runs well, but there are occasional bugs and glitches that can disrupt gameplay. Some players have reported issues with enemies clipping through walls, AI behavior being inconsistent, or certain interactions not triggering as expected. While these bugs aren’t game-breaking, they can detract from the experience, especially when you’re in the middle of a tense encounter with the mutants.
The game has received regular updates and patches, which have improved its stability, but players on lower-end PCs may experience frame rate drops, particularly in areas with heavy vegetation or complex environments. Additionally, multiplayer can sometimes suffer from connection issues or server instability, though this is less of a problem for players with a stable internet connection.
Conclusion: 8/10
The Forest is a unique survival horror experience that combines exploration, crafting, and psychological terror into a compelling package. The game’s atmosphere, dynamic world, and terrifying mutants create an immersive and tense experience that is hard to shake off. The multiplayer mode enhances the game’s replayability and provides a fun cooperative experience, th
This game has two fatal flaws: the base-building system and the combat.
First, the base-building system. Intuitively, the player will want to begin building a base as soon as possible, to stock up on food and supplies. This is a bad idea, as it appears that as your base improves, the enemies that roam above ground get stronger and attack more, and not in proportion to how well your base is prepared. The best way to play this game is to ignore the base building mechanic entirely and nomadically explore caves for loot until you are fully equipped.
Second, the combat. The ranged weapons do not have a reticle to show where you are aiming. The immediate defense for this will be "it's more realistic." However, the drawback in player experience far outweighs the realism added. Additionally, the forest isn't a realistic game. Animals spawning in front of you? Trees falling into perfectly sectioned 10 foot logs? Caving single handed with a lighter in your off-hand? Having an aiming reticle would only improve the player experience. In regard to melee combat, the enemies can be difficult to read due to the speed of their lunging attacks at times, and the "chop down" execute move can be triggered while the enemy is still up, allowing for the enemy to get a lethal 3 hit combo off while you are stuck in a 3 second animation.
Other than those two primary complaints, the game is quite good. The atmosphere in the caves and in the ending sequence is top notch, the enemy design becomes fairly unique in the mid-game, and the game looks decent for a Unity engine game. The story is very slim and only really becomes a narrative in the final 15 minutes, but the lore and those final 15 minutes are interesting and make the game worth playing if you enjoy janky combat and exploration in a horror setting.
Honestly it's good but not great. The story is big and it takes a decent amount of time to run through. But the story doesn't make sense at parts and the whole thing feels cobbled together. I have a decent amount of hours. I would say if you like this type of game you will get your moneys worth. For me though this was very mid.
was never a good game, but more of a unique experience. at this point the game is too old and busted for anyone to bother playing.
amazing game 10/10 even if is old and contains some goofy bug most of thems are funny.
I gotta say this game is fun. Even more fun if you play with friends just make sure you scale and don't build a ton so harder monsters don't come and attack your base before your ready
Build a base. Eat Humans. Go adventure. Go underground. Beat Aliens. Deforestation. Friends goofing around. This game has it all. 100% Would recommend to new players.
Fun survival horror game. The crafting system is simple but unique from other games, The exploration is great, wandering around the map finding new structures, items and caves is very fun and even tense because you never know when the weird, creepy cannibals are going to show up. Another point that i loved about it is the fact that new cannibals start spawning the more nights you survive, making the game harder and less repetitive. The npc's in this game are what really make it scary and immersive. They’re smart, they’ll sneak up on you out of nowhere, Nighttime is very eerie and makes you feel on edge the whole time.
The story’s not super easy to figure out, But the real fun is in the survival and building. I 100% recommend this game if you're into horror survival games.
was a hit when it released but the hype is over and the game doesnt hit the same if i knew everything from watching the game on youtube, friends help make it playable.
This game one of the best survival games ever. Till now it is the best survival game I had ever blade. The game is old but still has its own brightness. Also, The Forest is better than Sons Of The Forest in both game play and story. However, the game is one of the best games to play with friends. I had played both of the story mood and Co-operation modes. Honestly, it is better to play this game with friends. It has its own creativity in buildings and horror beside it is a survival game.
Overall 8/10.
