This is a great way for not paying CHILD Support... no wonder people like this game
Not a bad game at all, but kind of disappointing.
Building seems like a very important feature at first, but is practically irrelevant, as one doesn't even need to build a base in order to complete the game. In addition, building is an extremely grindy task, as the amount of materials needed to build walls and large structures is massive and takes a lot of time to get.
Also, I think the whole cave exploring part is very repetitive and ''Easy'' if one exploits certain tools and mechanics.
Finally, the game is quite mediocre story-wise, even though it has a great atmosphere with the whole cannibal and religious simbolism, it doesn't really explain anything to the player, and is quite hard to follow without videos or other explanations outside of the game,
Initially on my first play through, this game seemed like anything but a survival open world crafting game, especially after playing games like Valheim and 7 Days to Die.
It is open world, but it's the same map no matter what, same seed, same locations, same caves, which I thought was really bad for a survival game. The reason for this is probably because this game has a story. When you start the game there is no sense of direction or what to do. I was very confused for this reason and ended up at the "end game" location without knowing it. I also thought trees didn't regrow, but I was wrong about that.
I tried giving the game another chance 2 years later and this time I focused on taking it easy, explore every corner, read the clues and the notes to figure out what to do and what I need, and it ended up being a very interesting game. I really enjoyed the "mysteriousness" of the game that I initially hated, exploring the caves one by one finding new gear and clues to complete the story. Building a base, and the constant fear of getting raided by cannibals. The enemies progressively become stronger the longer you play the game. At the end of the day, it's still a pretty linear game since you need to explore the caves in a specific order, but that's something you need to figure out yourself so there's still some freedom in the game. As for the story, it didn't interest me that much, I only really enjoyed exploration, building, crafting, and surviving, planning my next steps. It can be a fun game but don't expect it to be a traditional survival game, and expect it to be linear.
After mandatory 10min in the main menu to listen to the music, create a save and spend hours chilling in the forest, meeting some locals along the way. Oh and there is your son you are supposed to find, but that's not very important.
For me it's still one of the best survival horror games out there.
10/10
The Forest is a gripping survival horror game that blends intense exploration, resource management, and psychological terror. Stranded in a mysterious forest, players must craft, build, and fight off intelligent cannibalistic mutants. The eerie atmosphere, realistic visuals, and immersive sound design heighten the tension, especially at night. Solo play feels terrifying, while co-op adds strategy and fun. With its unpredictable AI and deep survival mechanics, The Forest offers a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
The Forest is a first-person survival game developed by Endnight Games, which quickly gained popularity due to its intense atmosphere, immersive gameplay, and captivating design. Here are some key points that frequently appear in reviews of the game:
1. Atmosphere and Graphics
The game is well-known for its eerie and tense atmosphere. Set in a dense and dangerous forest with various creatures and a mysterious story, it creates a constant sense of unease. The graphics are quite impressive for this type of game, with clear details and a natural landscape that enhances the immersion. The day-night cycle adds an extra layer of depth, while the sound effects and visuals work together to complete the experience.
2. Gameplay and Mechanics
The Forest is an open-world survival game where players must build shelters, hunt, and defend themselves against dangerous enemies, including cannibal tribes. There's an extensive crafting system, and building shelters and tools is a key part of the gameplay. Exploration is also encouraged as players seek out resources and try to uncover mysteries.
3. Enemies and Challenges
The enemies in The Forest are varied, and some of them are quite terrifying. Cannibal tribes are just one type of foe, but there are also other monstrous creatures that appear as you progress. Combat with these enemies can be intense and challenging, and strategy and resource management become crucial for survival.
4. Co-op Mode
The multiplayer co-op mode is a major feature that allows players to work together to build shelters, explore, and survive. This mode adds an interesting dynamic and makes the game much more enjoyable when played with friends.
5. Story
While The Forest is primarily a survival game, its story plays a significant role. Players find themselves in a plane crash and must navigate a world full of mysteries where they must figure out what happened and what dangers lurk in the forest. The story is gradually revealed as players progress, and the plot twists can be surprising.
6. Strengths:
Tense and frightening atmosphere
High-quality graphics and vast environment to explore
Enjoyable multiplayer co-op experience
Engaging and challenging gameplay
Well-integrated crafting and building mechanics
7. Weaknesses:
In some parts of the game, enemy AI can seem unpredictable or unintelligent
The main storyline may feel vague to some players
Occasional technical issues or bugs
Lack of clear tutorials for newcomers
Conclusion:
The Forest is a captivating and immersive survival game for fans of the genre, with a unique atmosphere, complex gameplay, and constant challenges. If you enjoy games where you need to think strategically, explore, and face terrifying enemies, The Forest is definitely worth trying. Whether you play solo or with friends, the game offers a unique experience, though it can sometimes feel overwhelming.
One of the best survival games I ever played, this game was worth every penny, and it became one of my instant classics. I recommend this survival horror game to anyone.
Even though the game is a bit janky, it is fun, especially with others. It is a must play for anyone who enjoys survival type games.
Você é a extinção ambulante.
10/10
I like the graphics and how you can make items and the thrill of having to go against other creatures on a island to survive. The sounds are definetly one to remember LOL. I would recommend this game if you want to go against things that will scare you and it is best played not alone.
The Forest is a good survival horror game but it has a lot of flaws, you have to do a LOT of backtracking just to find resources, caves or things to help progress the story that this game wants to tell, and this game can get really boring if you mainly play solo, the combat in this game is very uninteresting and the cannibals attack you like a pack of rabid dogs to staring at you while questioning their life choices, and everything in this game feels so clunky to the point where i think that this game is more of a tech demo made in the unity engine, if you like survival horror, crafting and base building then this might be the game for you but for me, i don't really feel like finishing the story that this game wants to tell where everything in this game feels like a chore more than being fun, got this game during the spring sale and i still feel robbed out of my own money.
I love open world games but I typically hate horror games. The Forest seems to have been an exception to the rule.
Great atmosphere, scary at hell in caves or when you are pursued by cannibals out in the wilds. I have found the game difficult. I got swarmed or jumped by cannibals more than once when I was focused on a specific task or trying to defend my base. I have never felt strong. It is very easy to miss a hit and being punished even by a basic enemy. I had no idea what I had to do to advance the story and finish the game. In the end I checked some guides and was able to win the last fight thanks to the heads up I had. Congratulations to the people that figured that on their own. Overall I have enjoyed this game. It is great to see small indy companies create such memorable games when big AAA studios do forgettable games one after the other.
I love this game so much the mechanic, the enemies, and the most of all i like how this game combine modern and nature tech.
One of the best open world survival games ever. Sons of the forest is even better.
A pretty decent survival game, a fun experience with your friends.
I don't normally play survival horror games. I tend to find the crafting loop to be quite tedious and quite contrived. "To build this table you need to cut down three trees and catch 7 fish for some reason". I also don't really enjoy 'horror' games so I write this as someone who's more at home with a straight-up shooter like Doom/Quake, or with 'horror-lite' like HalfLife.
Given all the above, you're probably expecting me not to like it. But the opposite is true. I found the sneaking around pretty well done. There are things I'd have changed, sure, and I'll talk about those later, but the bad points of the game are heavily outweighed by the good.
The story is interesting and (while quite distressing at times), very well done. I wasn't quite expecting the twist at the end, and found the last five minutes of the game to be some of the best I've played since Half Life 1.
The music and sound effects are brilliant. With a pair of headphones on, and the lights out, it's wonderful sneaking around in the dark, using the position of the rustling leaves, creaking trees, babbling brooks and lapping waves to find your way around.
The environment is really well done. While it's clearly an older game compared to some of the newer visual spectacles the graphics are very nice, especially when some of the more interesting visual filters are applied. The sun coming down in the evening casts beautiful rays through the trees. In the afternoon, as the wind whips through the trees to let you know the time is getting on, it's fantastic..
The transition from 'overworld' to 'caves' is nicely done, and there's barely any lag during the 'loading' sequence as you squeeze through cracks. How they can load that much data seamlessly is really impressive. The underground sections are wonderfully done too. I like that you can 'clear out' the caves, but the overground doesn't get cleared.
The crafting is a real bind, though. It's a shame that this is possibly the least balanced part of the game. Especially since there are some lovely things you can build. Let me explain:
When you chop down a tree you get 4 logs. To build a house, you need about 30 logs. if you want to make a nice solid base for it, that's another 30 or so logs. So you're up to 15 trees to build a house. Now, the moment you start chopping trees, the enemies start to take an interest.... By the time you've built your house, you'll find you're being 'visited' all the time. I've tried building my house everywhere from the high snow, to a hidden peninsula, deep in the forest, to a distant lake shore. I'd spend a day watching for any enemy patrols, and ensure it wasn't a high-traffic area. Once I was happy, I'd start chopping. By about the fifth or sixth tree, I'd notice the cannibals... By the tenth or eleventh tree I'm clearing quite a bit of woodland. So I'd finish my house, and within a few nights, there'd be cannibals attacking it. So I'd build a wall. A section of wall takes 5 logs (iirc), and to surround a house with enough space to have some things inside like a drying rack, a few gardens and a rabbit run you need about 10 to 20 sections of wall. Gardens need a few logs.. a bench needs 2 logs... So to make a house, surrounded by a wall, you're clDoing that REALLY catches the attention of the locals, and by the time you've done all that chopping (stopping periodically to find food and drink of course) you're being visited by packs of 6 or more cannibals, all attacking your walls... So you build traps... Which take wood... 9 wood for a single section of defense, and you need 10 to 20 of them... which is another 20 to 40 trees..... You get the picture. By the time you've finished constructing a small house as a base you've needed to level 100+ trees just to form the defenses for it, which is a major clearing operation, and you're now fighting cannibals every night, and sometimes a few times during the day.
The only alternative is to build your house out on an island, or to build a raft/houseboat. Both of these are good options, but ferrying the wood to an island takes AGES, just extending up the gameplay.
If it were me, I'd have a 'starter area' where there were no enemies and lots of wood. Let the player build there whatever they like, but as long as they're there, the story isn't advancing. Maybe there's no food, so the player has to leave the 'safe' area.... Plus they're no closer to rescuing their son... But at least they can indulge in crafting without having the whole thing wrecked every night by cannibal visits.
As many people have pointed out on forums, the best way to play the game is to just avoid all the housing and just build field shelters to save your game. It doesn't attract as much attention, and takes a lot less time.
I finished the game in 38 in-game days (or 83 hours). I feel that was about right. I definitely over-stocked myself for the end-game, but the final boss battle was quite manageable on normal mode...
I'm interested to see what the Sons of the Forest is like, and whether it fixes the crafting issue (i.e. the crafting system is painfully inconvenient and just ends up making more work for you than you intend by attracting unwanted attention)...
Overall, a really good game. I bet it's fun multiplayer. But I'd avoid bothering with crafting any structures larger than the small box cabin, it's not worth it.
It keeps you nailed to the chair for quite some time. One great advantage of the game is that you can play it with your friends. Overall, it can be a very scary experience and is indeed a survival game to its core.
The game is quit interesting, but all my friends got motion sickness, so i had to play alone.. And optimization is a real garbage))
This game is really good to play. It has a good story and good graphics for a game made in 2016. The only problem is that i wouldn't be able to cope without a sweaty friend who doesn't sleep. All in all 9/11
Amazing game! Was able to get my wife to start playing Co-Op games with me and we started with the Forest. It ended up being easy for her to learn as we explored Multi-Player together and got used to controls on a controller. Highly recommend for couples getting started with gaming together!
Bought to play with friends on dedicated server. Game was amazing to start. Progression is tied behind having to explore a certain cave. The server keeps disconnecting us randomly when in the cave so we can never progress. Has amazing potential and game breaking bugs. Do not buy if you intend to play with friends. Not sure how a game with so many bugs and issues has such positive reviews, but I guess the bar is pretty low these days.
This games scares the s*** out of me . I have 27 hours on this game and i am not lying but like 10 hours are just sitting in the main menu just contemplating playing this game . The feeling of being watched is scary . knowing that at any moment someone , or something can jump from the nearest bush and kill you . The forest is one of those games that you should play blind , alone , or with a friend , it is something to experience . if you love playing minecraft , rust , or any other base building survival game . Then , this game is for you and Omg it delivers on so many levels . the survival mechanics are good at best , but on Hard survival , its another beast . the creepy vibe is perfect , the lore is just WOW and the replay value is basically infinite . I played this game with my friend . I tried to play it solo , but i could enter the caves , explore , or anything since i was too scared. i recommend this game to any one who is bored . and i wish you play it , alone or with friend . AND FINALLY , SURVIVE THE FOREST
A must-play even today, all atmosphere, the ennemies, the forest and mainly THE STORY are incredible. Does even my review counts among all the other ones though ? Go for it.
The forest is a very fun game especially when you got a few buddies to play it with. Alone the game is creepy and a bit more hard but overall the way you interact with the world and the way the story is told is simply outstanding and i dare say this game was better than the second. Why? Because you were a nobody weak lost at the start and then only at the end you are very powerfull with plenty of resources. I recommend this game to anyone who wants a good singleplayer experience or a fun mutiplayer game this game can be both.
Just played for almost 20 hours with a friend and its honestly a really fun game, its Super intense, creepy atmosphere, and the survival feels real. The enemies are, well smart i guess lol, and exploring is so addicting. I recommend!
The Forest isn’t the most polished game—you’ll run into janky animations and the occasional bizarre bug—but beneath that, it’s one of the most immersive and unsettling survival experiences out there.
One moment, you're peacefully building a base; the next, you're sprinting through the woods at while cannibals chase you down. The cannibal AI is very good and creative.
Yes, it's rough around the edges, but if you love survival games, The Forest is absolutely worth getting lost in.
I recommend playing both solo and co-op, each mode has a different taste.
The Forest is a classic survival game! A lot of fun alone, and even more with friends, you find yourself at the mercy of your environment and the, ah... *native* populations. While now a bit aged compared to some newer entries in the genre, it's still very engaging, especially if you assume the role of experienced guide with newer players. Beyond just grabbing food and surviving, you have fairly configurable options for building structures, watercraft, and eventually your own base. Save yourself, save your son, and get out of here! That is, until the next time you return ;)
It's a pretty fun survival horror game. Unlike many other survival games, it's very approachable to people who don't have a lot of free time anymore due to life's responsibilities
A truly incredible game, perfect for both groups of friends and when you have a lonely night and want some excitement. 9/10
A developmental disaster of a game. Sure, it’s fun to play with friends, but the fact that it’s still full of bugs even 11 years after its release makes the gameplay unbearable. First things first, I seriously want to punch the face of the person who designed caves. To proceed in some of the caves you need items from other caves and it takes a lot to reach the point where you need them. You reach there, and since you don't have the required item, you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK to the entrance just to leave and you have to find the EXACT CAVE where the required item is located. I seriously do respect people who finished this game without using wiki. A worse problem is when the game begins to unnaturally force you to progress. You're having a great time with your friends sitting in your camp and suddenly two of each boss pounce on you at once.
Seriously, this game didn't need a sequel, it NEEDS a complete remake.
played sons of the forest and now im playing this and it is wayyyy better than sons i recommend

good game but scary for me personally would be good if could turn off mutants and could only have cannibals
good survival game :)
I definitely recommend it if you are interested in survival games. After that you should get Sons of The Forest. Well, it depends on you :D:D
However, Gud geim
I love killing and chopping these little creatures, cooking them then eating. YUM!
Anyway, great game.
Great game, survival/horror/builder game. Even better with some buds 10/10 would recommend
Excellent survival horror game -- extremely immersive. Probably the second scariest game that I've played, after Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. One feature that stands out is the excellent enemy AI -- they seem very real, and will do different things, at different times, based on different situations.
I beat the game after 70 hours, and I would highly recommend it for fans of horror, survival, or both.
I remember back when the game was still alpha, it was amazing! Cool survival concept of building shelters, fires and realism. And as if that wasnt cool enough, there was also a tribe of hostile people here, trying to kill us.
Over time the game lost it's "classic" feeling, but gained a whole new one. We have nature, Sci-fi, collectables and more.
This game offers tons and tons of fun, either solo or multiplayer, it adds up to the story it started years ago and even has 2 endings.
While this game is fun and all, and totally worth it, it can not last forever, as the studio is working on the sequel this game doesnt get any new content. While i hope in the future they re-visit this game and add some cool stuff just for fun, i think this is it for this game. But this doesnt mean the game is bad or isnt good anymore.
Try it, enjoy it, the nature awaits to be yours...
A fun simple Survival Horror Game.
If you see this game on Sale pick it up. Its worth the play. Highly recommend you pick it up to play with friends though.
There is some annoying bugs and combat does have issues. They are however small enough most people can over look it.
4/10 - Pick up with some friends to complete together. Minor issues, but over all a fun time.
I started playing The Forest thinking I’d be the next ultimate survivor - hunting, roast some fish, chop down trees or maybe build a nice lakeside cabin. What I dind’t expect was to be scared sh*tless by naked cannibals, who sprint at me like they just finished a marathon on crack. First few in-game night? Terrifying. Every rustling bush? Immediate panic attack.
Then, just when I thought I was getting the hang of things -building my cozy, fully fenced-in beachfront property (yes, I live in luxury, even in hell), feeling like a survival queen - the game goes: “Oh, by the way, here are some mutants.” And not just any mutants. No. These fckers are like the unholy offspring of a Lovecraftian nightmare and a science experiment gone horribly wrong. And guess what? They spawn on my well-secured property. MY land. My safe space! What’s the point of building a fortress if a seven-legged flesh monster can just casually waltz through it like it owns the place?? Bro, I BUILT A FENCE FOR A REASON! How does this game work??
As if the horrors of the game weren’t enough, I had to deal with my so-called teammates.
Afk master - One of them is AFK 60% of the time. Why? I don’t know. Probably because he’s so f*cking done with this game that he decided real life is less stressful.
Captain Clueless - Then there’s the one guy who has no godd*mn idea what’s going on. I mean, I get it. Survival games can be overwhelming. But we’re all hunting a shark on the island near the yacht. Where is he? He‘s just standing and jumping off the dock we built and trying to kill an imaginary shark. Buddy...do you not see the rest of us fighting for our lives? Do you not see the giant shark fin cutting through the water?! Oh wait, of course not because you’re facing the wrong damn direction, throwing rocks into the ocean like some ancient caveman trying to summon a sea god! Well...logic left the chat here.
Then....my favourite bug appeared. The game lets you build log sled to haul wood, right? Sounds useful. Except this game is coded by Satan. I was sprinting with my sled... AND THEN BOOM! THE GAME DECIDES IT'S TIME TO SEND ME TO SPACE.
At this point, I’ve completely abandoned the main storyline. Timmy can rot. I am now a full-time architect, dedicated to building the most luxurious beachfront resort this island has ever seen. Who needs a plot-twist when you can have a two-story mansion with custom flooring and a fking gazebo? So...Would I recommend The Forest? Hell yes. But only if you’re mentally prepared for sleep deprivation, paranoia, betrayal, and the inevitable breakdown that comes from trying to work with guys.
I’d say that it’s a great game it’s immersive, the building system is good, Enemies get stronger over time, there’s multiplayer, a big map to explore ect. Although there’s glitches here and there but besides that its a good game.
Spooky and fun to explore but building is a bit of a struggle
One of the best games I've played recently
I highly recommend this game
**** advantages ****
1- The story is excellent and makes you worry about your choices, especially at the end
2- The gameplay and its ideas are very good
3- The world is full of danger and fear
4-The graphics are excellent to this day
5-The enemies, although few in Types but okay
6-You have the freedom to build your fort or your house, or anything in the world
7-Excellent game in cooperative mode
**** Disadvantages ****
1-The soundtrack wasn't much and you might forget it over time
2-Enemies may suddenly appear inside your shelter , house, or fortress, even though you have built a wall around the fortress
3-I was hoping to Breeding some animals or birds ( Although there are rabbits you can raise them, but I was hoping for more )
************* But in the end, I advise you to try this game *************
its a really good story but its a little short.
This game is actually masterpiece of all time, even without constant updates and new things added. Very fun with friends, very good storytelling even better then the sons of the forest tbh.
After experiencing the game for several hours, I was notified by a friend that the game indeed has a hog. Therefore, the game is peak.
The best AI, not to hard on your system , great story .
The best game i ever played.
An old feeling survival games with bad gameplay features
Timmy is a bitch. Motherfucker isn't worth more than my steam achievement farming. Game is fun though. Made a sign on a hill that says poo in really big letters.
