Early Access Development Roadmap

SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

About the Game

In a future where bodies can be healed in minutes, the wounds technology can't conquer are within the mind.

In Destiny’s Sword you’re the commander of a team of skilled troopers - and the only thing that can get in their way is themselves.

Every recruit has their own story to tell, their own reasons for getting involved. Their experiences while under your command will shape their development and affect their performance. As you get to know your squad on and off the battlefield you will explore the full depth of the human condition. Empathy will be your most powerful tool.

We’ve all played the hero. It’s time to be a leader.

CYPRIS

The galaxy rests on a knife’s edge. The Galactic Government struggles to maintain control against the growing strength of the powerful corporate syndicate known as the Consortium.

Neither side is prepared for open conflict, but when unrest in a distant world threatens the flow of Lucidium, the mineral that fuels the galaxy, the two sides find their battleground. This natural paradise is called Cypris.

On Cypris players will lead a squadron of soldiers into battle, navigating the effects of their decisions on their troops’ mental and physical well-being.

What at first looks to be a simple fight between good and evil plays out with twists and turns as players learn that the situation is not as clear-cut as it seems.

Discovery, betrayal, advancement, and camaraderie with their squad will lead players to learn the truth of what is happening on Cypris and who is really pulling the strings, forcing everyone to dance to a tune that will topple the current powers and install a new one…

Infinite Character Diversity
Thanks to the living universe created by our Insight Engine character AI system, Destiny’s Sword is filled with infinite, diverse personalities and unprecedented character depth.

Every character’s unique life history, personality and emotions govern and are dynamically shaped by their relationships and their experiences - including your actions and decisions as their commander. For example, if a character suffered trauma in their past they might need more reassurance and support. If they’ve taken multiple losses on the battlefield and are feeling down about themselves you’ll need to help them build up their confidence before they go back into more difficult missions.

The Insight Engine is built on extensive psychological modeling and in collaboration with consultation from real-life war veterans, it allows us to highlight the long-term costs of combat.

Narrative by New York Times Bestselling Author, M. D. Cooper
The game is built on a series of space opera novels, written exclusively for 2Dogs Games by best-selling author M. D. Cooper. Cooper has penned over 80 books including the Aeon 14 series and Lucidium Run, a prequel to Destiny’s Sword.

Last update a year ago, game unfinished.
Fantastic concept, poorly executed.
Armor choices don't matter. Weapon choices matter once in the whole game, but barely.
Mental health system is locked behind a branching story with too few branches, so it really only matters as commentary feedback on the choices you make. Many choices are very poorly telegraphed; do I deploy a nano-stint in a wounded patient or not? I have no idea what the risks are and there were no ways to find out before hand. I guess I'll perform this life-saving surgery by trial-and-error!
Gorgeous art and prose. This would have made a fantastic comic book. It's a pity they sold it as a game.

This is not a shooter, it's a psychological game. It's an interesting way to play and there are plenty of decisions to make but don't expect action. You and your team are there as peacekeepers and you can't do well if you go in guns blazing.

People looking for a FPS are gonna hate this game but those looking for a different kind of challenge might find it enjoyable.

Game is bugged, devs seem to have left the project and they leave here on steam as it is hoping people will buy it.
Check forum if this game will be supported in the future but DO NOT BUY IT NOW.
Really.

I really like the depth in the characters, and ability to track their individual emotional states! Their stories are relatable and believable, which is a refreshing change from many other games! I can't wait to find out what happens to the team next!

This is such a fun game! I've got to say, probably one of my all time favourites now! It has action, drama, adventure, fun and animals! I mean what's better than all that? This game had me sucked in to the world, I sat and played the whole way through in one sitting, i couldn't get enough. I need the next episode to come out so I can continue the adventure. These are such great characters with deep stories and personalities. This game has it all, the music, graphics and story line are fabulous and I am definitely obsessed! This is honestly just such a great game!!!

I've now replayed this since my previous review, and I must say that it has come a long way. There are still bugs, typos, etc. indicating that there is work still to be done, but the conversations are no longer simplistic and repetitive. You can't yet play the whole first episode through, but I'm glad I invested in this, and am happy to see the devs continuing to do good work.

Previous review (2022):
Not ready for early access yet. The core concept is interesting, but the game is very buggy and only about demo-length.

This will be well-worth it down the line, but it's just not there yet.

I can't recommend the game, most prominently because it is story-focused, and the writers don't understand some very simple concepts of English or biology.

The writers refer to singular individuals as 'they' and 'their,' sometimes intentionally pretending the person has no gender, and alternatively, just because they're being lazy. 'They' is never used for a singular individual. 'They' is meant to refer to multiple people. If you're looking for a singular gender-neutral pronoun because the sex of the person is unknown, you would use 'he'; otherwise, you would refer to the person according to their sex.

There is no such thing as a 'personal pronoun'; pronouns are never personal. It doesn't matter whether you're sexing a human, goat, or hamster. This is basic.

Yes, this is not your shoot-em up game. However, if you really want to know how to support a successful squad this is it. Poor choices in managing and supporting your team will make a difference in the choices they make in the field and whether they come home alive and save others. Well done I say! I would like to see more extended play in the battles with the same decision making techniques.

I love the game, but unfortunaly atm it barely early acces but more like a demo with only 5 missions you play
so atm it's not worth the 8,99€ it cost

but I'll keep it and hope more contenmt is added soon....

-----------------------------

Updated after update, august 2023

I wouldnt call this a major Update
Basickly it adds 1 mission to the game, expanding episode 1 from 5 to 6 missions and still 3 side quests
so still not a lot of content, and you can proberly play through all missions in less then 2 hours

that said, the new mission looks good and is well written - so defently a nice update
so can only hope we get a lot more missions like that one added to the game, and that some of the choices you made in the first missions starts to make a difrence in what you can do in some of those missions

I would like to reccomend this, the premise is interesting and I llove to support local studios, but I barely made it 15 mins before the game broke, I really, REALLY want this to improve, its go alot of potential.

Upvoted in the hopes the devs will finish the game and release it in a better state.

Note: Played the Early Access copy on a Steamdeck with no errors! The only problem was that navigating around the ship by clicking the tiny area icons was a little fiddly, and when the tutorial popups with pointer-arrows were showing you where to click, for some reason the location icons were even harder to select; I had to glide the cursor over them diagonally, and the selection point was slightly above the actual icon at those times.
Actual Early Access review on 1/21/23: Destiny's Sword is an excellent COMMAND simulator; if you want to experience the difficulties of managing soldiers and ordering them into battle, rather than the turn-based combat of a miniatures wargame, you'll love this.
Unlike X-Com style tactics games, you aren't moving troops around a battlefield; instead, you are making the hard calls and trusting the troops to execute effectively. The 'gotcha' is that the troops are real, messy people, not Generic Space Marines who either follow orders or enter a turn-timer-based "panic" state; instead, these troops are more or less effective based on their combat readiness, as determined by a more complex emotion-tracker than simply a spectrum between "fine" and "not fine." If you keep an eye on how they are doing back at base, you can more easily keep them alive and achieve your objectives in the field.
At the current moment, there are about three short narrative quests within the base, and about five or six field missions. I played the whole thing through on my steam deck in about an hour, and loved it. I can't wait to see more!

Its an interesting multiple choice simulator and team managing game.
The sober graphics: you will love it or hate it. Can be a part of the style.
Quest are a nice addition, to be improved.

For current price, its something to consider if youre in to this particular genre.
If not and low on cash, you migth consider another game. But in general,
i can recommend it.

Things to improve
*Every section of the ship should be more interactive and dynamic with things to do
*The digital assistant can be annoying at some point and sometimes blocks the text of the dialogue with a character.
It would be nice if you can switch off the assistant, or minimalize her comments and text screen.
*Used armor and weapons dont have any information to be considered for missions.
*Stats seem more a backstory addition then a practical tool. Most conversations can be repeated and with some common sense, interactions can work without real use or insight in the personal stats of a character.
*Repetitive conversitions with charcters blocks more depth and dynamic interations.
*In general, choices and their consequences should be worked out in updates.
*Adding an internal foe/antagonist: some controversial person or competitor might spice up the game

TLDR: This game is like Consortium, a solid concept and base but little more than a demo right now.

I had/have high hopes for this game but at the moment I just cannot recommend it in good faith. Starting with the good, the game has a solid game play loop of debriefing your team, equipping them, and sending them on a new mission. The story is good, not at all a "combat" game, more like a choose your own novel. The real decisions are in the handling of your team, not combat tactics.

As for the bad, well it just isn't done. I knew it was early access when I bought it but a 2 hour play though that doesn't even seem to get through the tutorial is not even a game yet. It is a demo. I will not be returning the game as I do genuinely think it has promise, but my advise to others is to wish-list/watch this title in hopes the finish.

Updated Aug 2023 Review (Original Review at Bottom)

TLDR - The concept for this game is unique and intriguing, but the execution is still struggling to live up to its potential and game-breaking bugs will force restarts. This game needs more work still.

This updated review specifically applies to the August 2023 version of the game, the most recent patch. I was originally drawn in from the WIRED article and decided to stay since I wanted to see how the game would evolve if given the chance.

The nature of the game can jokingly be called a PTSD-management game because the foundation of the game isn't about the combat it's about the people involved in the war, from making relationships to warning off kids to dealing with medical emergencies. The concept remains intriguing and with underdog spirit fueling it I really, really want to like this game enough to recommend it even in its current state.

Unfortunately, in the current state I still cannot recommend it, because while the devs are still putting in the effort to make the game everything they hope for it to be it still needs major work.

There are fewer game-breaking bugs now than there were before, but they are still present as you close in on the end of Chapter 1. The greatest offender happens during Mission 5, Shore Leave, with repeating dialogue cycles that never seem to end. At this point saving the game breaks the game, as trying to reload to this point causes an infinite loading screen. I cannot believe this was an intended design choice by the devs to prevent save-scumming.

Beyond that point a lot of the commentary I provided in my previous review remains the same: there are still spelling errors, the game plays more like a visual novel on a mobile game than a PC game, the significance of armor choices and weapon choices is not spelled out even when it's significant, and the game still predominantly rewards the "be-sympathetic-to-everyone" approach given the intent of the game and its message.

The problem with the purely sympathetic approach is that while sympathy is important being overly soft is not always the best way to get results. Talking is important, but sometimes individuals respond better to directness than kindness, and not everyone should respond well to the "nice" approach. On a tangential note, the SMALL TALK option should probably be removed from the game as it universally results in each squad member trying to duck out of the conversation, with the exact same text between them all.

The experience has improved somewhat, but even still it is a flawed experience. Whether the devs intend it or not it is probably best to still approach this like a roleplaying game on a no-save playthrough, because even if you don't care about the story the game may break before you reach the end.

My last note is directed to the devs in particular: please keep going. I realize that the game dev cycle is probably rough on your end, and I am eagerly awaiting the day I can recommend this to other people to play.

Original Review

TLDR - The concept for this game is unique and intriguing, but the execution hasn't lived up to the potential yet and game-breaking bugs prevent progression. I want to recommend this but can't yet.

This review specifically applies to the version of the game as of Nov 15 2022, the most recent patch, and I foremost admit that the WIRED article about this game is what drew my attention to it in the first place.

I really want to like this game, because the concept of managing the mental state of a squad in a way that XCOM (or any other video game) never did is intriguing, even if it's easy to jokingly refer to it as a PTSD management game. That's what the game is set out to be, however, teamed up with good artwork and a half-decent premise and held together by the glue of underdog spirit. That made me want to give it a chance.

Unfortunately, like soldiers setting out for glory and coming home haunted, this game hit my library with lots of issues and needs to be sent back to the devs to get years of professional help.

The biggest elephant in the room is game-breaking bugs: not necessarily uncommon for Early Access games but very jarring for a game this short and shallow. It is incredibly frustrating to nearly be at the end of the game, only to be unable to progress to completion because the "Dismiss" button stops working and then disappears. No less frustrating are the endless dialogue cycles with the crewmates, going back and forth to make sure everyone is squared away only to repeat statements from two missions ago.

For those who care about how the game plays, the comparison has been made multiple times and holds accurate: this would be right at home on a mobile platform. Brief playtime, point-and-click interface, visual novel progression of events...you name it, this game has it, down to meaningless armor and weapon choices because no stats are given or consequences for using particular loadouts made visible, let alone clear. Nevermind the typos and spelling errors, either.

While the game is billed as a squad management game (which is to say, you send squads out on missions and then manage their well-being when they come back) it fails to feel meaningful. The personality wheels do not appear to correspond to anything other than floating text, so it boils back to visual novel guidelines: make good choice and get good prize. In this case, "good" being "obviously most sympathetic" because it has been noted that the choices seem to be shallow and directed.

This isn't to say it's an awful experience, just flawed. If you approach it like a roleplaying game and don't care about winning you might be surprised what kind of impact you have on your squad and the fictional corporation vs government vs revolutionary three-way war.

There is a foundation to a beautiful game here, but it needs to let the concrete dry and start putting some walls and a roof before we even discuss the right way to paint and carpet. My earnest hope is that the devs secure some additional funding and manpower to make that happen, because I would love to finish this game one day.

It just isn't going to be this day.

Interesting concept, and could turn out good in the future.
However, I'm not confident it will.
I'm not sure the devs know where they want to take this game.

In it's current state it's not worth it.

I kind of assumed this would have turn-based tactical combat, and it does not. Not at all their fault; I didn't look very closely before picking it up.

What it does have is command decision-making, and managing the mental health and readiness of a small squad, which is quite interesting. I think the amount of info provided for each trooper might be excessive - their states have something like 20 to 30 "degrees of freedom" and it's not clear that our management options are granular enough to use all that even if we're able to remember it all.

It feels unfinished (duh, it's Early Access) and I'm stopping early so I don't spoil the story for myself, but I think this will be a hoot when it's done and I'm glad they have my $ to help them keep working on it.

[Request - if troopers' states are going to update after each mission, could you please throw in a bit of animation to help us see the changes? If you show me thirty sectors and then ten minutes later show me thirty slightly-different sectors, I'm not going to pick up on the differences unless something super drastic happened.]

An interesting premise and a good start, but in need of some tweaks before it can realise its potential. Such is the nature of early access. As it is, this is a fairly unique narrative-focused game that has promise.

Some suggestions for the devs:

-Spellcheck please
-Slow down the team's in-mission dialogue - it's often off screen before it can be read
-Please fix being able to repeat the same conversations over and over post-mission
-The AI assistant's window obscures the ship section tooltips - might want to put the tooltips on top
-May want to give some indication of mission objectives before the mission is over. Either that or call the star rating system something else, like 'mission performance'

different game mechanics , complex characters , choices matter, devs needs more time on the story, and few bugs fixes, right now a person could be down with it in about 1 hour, i do think 2023 might be a better time i do think eag price is fine as long as they keep the story moving.
