Homeworld Remastered Collection

Tried to come back to play this game and now can't get it to launch. redid the integrity and still have issues

A classic RTS space simulator. Its a shame they never made a 3rd that lived up to it's potential.

I love Homeworld. I would recommend the series to anyone who enjoys strategy games or simply a good story.

However, Gearbox hates Homeworld. They axed the mobile game without warning - not even the devs knew beforehand - and they broke the Classic version of the original Homeworld here in the Remastered bundle (and Classic is the superior version, because it uses the actual ballistics of 1's engine instead of the chance rolls of 2's). It's practically unplayable, because basic ship functionality (docking fighters) doesn't work. Hasn't worked for about 1.5 years, because they patched the game for their Remaster multiplayer malarky and broke the 20+ year-old singleplayer Classic campaign in the process.

The problem has been reported and acknowledged, and it has become apparent they have no plans to fix their game. Because Gearbox hates Homeworld and its fans.

Only recommending because it allowed me to play the original version of Homeworld in a slightly better way and that game still holds up after all this time IMO.

Classic game. Played through many time and always fun.

Emotive. Beautiful. Masterpiece. A journey where your task is to ensure the survival of an entire civilization not once but twice.

Fight epic battles so that your people may live another day. Relax watching your collectors mine asteroids for resources. Steal enemy ships for your own. Marvel a the music and the visuals.

A must for any sci-fi lover.
(But let's not talk about Homeworld 3, that was simply a fever dream.)

fun game but too old and dated to recommend

- I did not play the original games, so my review comes untainted by fandom both possitive and negative.

OVERVIEW:
At this time the game is best enjoyed single player. The campaign in HW1 Remastered is amazing and I expect HW2R's to be great as well. The story, cinematics, music and atmosphere all get 10/10

CONTROLS:
Some players have a little trouble getting used to the controls and while this is in part due to the fully 3d nature of the game I also feel it is in part down to the developers descision to keep the old control system rather than improving upon it. That said, everything works nicely and I found everythign easy to get used to. 8/10

GRAPHICS:
The game is simply stunning close up, ships are well detailed, docking ships looks awesome, the enviroments and FX are great. Could they be better.. Probably.. Are they good enough, definitly. 9/10
OVERALL:
An exellent game, I highly recommed it to anyone who loves, RTS, sci-fi, or who is just looking to try something new or find a great story to be immersed in. 9/10

This game is no longer playable on modern machines. I always encounter the "General Failure" message either when a level or game is loading or in the middle of one.

I played this back when the original was brand new. It's a great game, and the remastered graphics are just beautiful.

I played the original version back in 2000. Such a nice throw back. Remastered and still holds up as a fun strategy game.

awesome game. If your looking for lot's of planing and scheming, go with this.

Homeworld:

Homeworld was pure genius and mastered the game world in a way no other has been able to do, I miss it so, all and anything made books, models, and collectibles was an obsession for me. Many games have hooked me but nothing like HomeWorld

An amazing classic RTS with combat that still holds up perfectly today. If you want epic space battles with little lag and downtime, a good story, and old, yet charming graphics this game is for you 100%.

This Game can no longer be played on modernized tech every time I launch the game it gives me that "General Error" Crash ik it's not a hardware issue as I have my specs up to date with the latest tech. Do not buy this game until they patch this error because it's a waste of money to buy a game you physically can't play anymore.

Good but hard.

I have loved the Homeworld series since I was a child. They combine a great story, beautiful music, thorough world-building, and a wonderful gameplay experience. I am so glad that this remake has come out to bring these classics into the modern world of gaming.

Better than the original. The quality of life improvements and enhanced graphics are fantastic.

For me, I just have to press Esc when the loading screen is looping (Homeworld 2, the only one I've gotten to work thus far). It will keep doing that forever unless you find Esc. After that, the game works fine, impeccable even.

I have no nostalgia for the Homeworld series, just got this game in 2025, but this is a really cool space RTS game. Will tease your brain a bit getting the controls and keybinds down.

Homeworld Remastered Collection is beautiful, with amazing gameplay that spans the test of time. Make sure to grab the Players' Patch for this game, as it fixes a few long-standing bugs that Gearbox didn't get to fix. The copy of Homeworld Remastered also comes with the original versions, if one wishes to play the games as they were originally made. In all, this is one of the best RTS games I've played, with an amazing soundtrack and story to boot.

Does not have a borderless fullscreen option and the command line argument does not work either

100% completed the game.

I liked part 2 way more then part 1.
Though I think some have still got some design flaws (weird difficulty spikes and drops) I can still see why these games are classics.

I guess I will recommend this...barely. I mean, if you loved the original game, by all means, get it. But as someone who did NOT play the original game, I find it frustrating, mostly for technical reasons. I only played the remastered, not the classic versions.

For one thing, it stutters. Every 10 seconds, there's a hiccup. For another, it can be difficult to just do things like click on units; if I am trying to select a single ship, oftentimes I have to click multiple times, as it just doesn't register, or it'll register and highlight the entire combat group but not the one ship I want without several more clicks. Sometimes, if I'm currently selecting these ships over here, but then I go and select those ships over there, it will instead highlight both groups. Sometimes I click to move and it starts my moving my ships to some random location. Sometimes ships refuse to launch from carriers; they'll just sit in the hanger. Sometimes ships continue to count towards my pop limit, despite being long dead. The mouse wheel is great for zooming in and out, but it's only allowed to zoom a little bit, then it stops, forcing you to use the keys anyway. Sometimes ordering formations and such doesn't work; it'll ding but nothing will happen.

Then there's the stuff that is deliberate. Most annoying is that the game will constantly wrench control away from you to show you a scene, but the scene is in real time, meaning your ships are dying and need your command but too bad, the game insists you watch their really slow scenes that take WAAY longer than they have any right to (sometimes they'll spin the camera all around with grand music just to show you...nothing really, just 30 seconds to look at a ship you've already been looking at). At the start of each mission, all of your ships carry over, which is cool, but the formations and behaviors all reset for no reason (which would be less annoying if the defaults weren't always the worst options). And then, of course, you have the famous scaling difficulty--an idea that always sounds great in theory but almost never works well. In this case, however many ships you end a mission with will help determine how many enemy ships you will encounter in the next level. So if you retire all your ships before ending the level, you'll fight practically nothing--but if you play like a normal person and rebuild your fleet to the max after every fight, you'll be brutally punished for it. The fact that it's very easy to hit the population cap means you'll be facing fleets far larger than you are ever allowed to build. But sometimes, if you end a level with too few ships, on purpose or by accident, you'll be hosed over when you hit a level where the action starts immediately and you don't have time to rebuild.

There's also just a lack of QoL features. Now, I get this in the classic version, I guess; it's old. But it's strange that the remaster didn't change it. Like, you have ships that repair but you can't tell them to automatically go around repairing things. Defensive behavior still often results in ships flying into lethal radiation and dying when you're trying to keep them back. Telling any large ship to switch power from weapons to engines will reduce power, and do nothing for the engines--why is this even an option if it doesn't work for these ships? There's no easy to find certain ships, like a resource ship or a probe, if it's buried under countless other markers or has wandered off somewhere.

As for the experience itself, I actually prefer the first game; it has a fairly grounded story, a simple journey (even if it doesn't entirely make sense), with steady progression. The second game is more challenging, cool, but the story is rather dumb, a bit of a retcon, and actually has fewer ships for you to play with, making it kinda boring (I basically used the same 3 ships in every level). I've seen people claim the story telling is "amazing," at least for it's time, but no, it's barebones, and other games did it better even back then. I'm still marking it recommended because there's still a decent space game in there (and maybe you'll have fewer technical problems than I did), but if you weren't a fan of the original games, or have never played a 4X game, there are better titles to go to.

Amazing game despite its age. Still just getting my feet wet but there's a lot of potential here. Intuitive controls and the sound track is amazing.

HW1: Very good space RTS game with solid in depth fleet management, strong story, and great music. The game makes you feel for the people your fighting for and every battle/encounter is well fought/earned victory all the way to the end.
HW Cataclysm: Mixes RTS and horror which surprisingly works great for the game.
HW2: Decent sequel, same mechanics with a weaker story.
HW3: STAY AWAY

Scaling difficulty system is absolutely trash, you will have virtually no way to win some missions and the game won't tell you why there's suddenly a thousand ships on level 5.

The player patch mod just straight up does not work on SteamDeck either, I was really enjoying this game but it's too bugged to be worth the time.

Edit 1/26/2025: even after uninstalling all mods, I can no longer play this game. Anytime I start a mission, after the cinematic plays, I just immediately fail the mission and cant progress. Restarting the campaign from the beginning doesn't fix it - I tried that 3 times. It is now impossible for me to play this game past the first 3 levels. Fuck this game, do not buy it.

Back in 1999, I bought a magazine that came with a copy of the original Homeworld and it changed my life forever. You see, before I played Homeworld, games were just another kind of toy. Homeworld showed me games could tell stories. And pretty darn good stories at that.

Since it was my first RTS ever, the game was extremely difficult for my child brain to complete. But I did it. And will be forever grateful for the game that gave me passion for this medium that are games.

As you can see, this review is filled with nostalgia, so take that for what you will.

The remaster itself is incredible! Just what I imagined all those years ago with all the blocky ships. The intro sequence brought a tear to my eyes, that's hpw beautiful it is.
Get the game and, if you're a fan of RTS games, you won't regret it.

A classic game with all of the majesty and awe of a fairytale and the brute problem solving and strategy of a game worthy of only the highest praise.

The fight dynamics in this Space Sim are one of a kind.

There is a very good reason why Homeworld won Game of the Year. Besides the smooth graphics and gameplay, and the wonderful sound design and music, it was a fantastically-made RTS flipped upside-down by adding in a third dimension. The difficulty curve can be steep until you learn just how obscenely powerful Salvage Corvettes are. Even in the Remastered Edition, where you are limited in how many of them you can build. The sequel, Catalysm, is missing because it cannot be run on any OS after Vista. This is tragic, given that it is far closer to the original than Homeworld 2.

Back in it's earlier days when mods first hit, I loved this game, never actually finished the story though the mods just made it far more fun to just do skirmish.

However I'm not a fan of the 3d movement it's rather frustrating keeping track of everything and everything just seems a little too small, or the scale of the map is a bit too large idk I wish they went with more of a grid system.

Shame it seems modding has gone as far as it's gonna go.

I dont hate or really love the game I did play it a lot when star wars mods released for it and was hyped.

Honestly the best RTS games out there, especially for Sci-Fi Fans.

I loved the original classic Homeworld. It hurts my heart to report that it seems to have a rather unfortunate malfunction that pretty much renders the game unplayable. I'm stepping way out of line by saying this, but I'm assuming it's a marketing tactic to push players like myself away from the well known originals and maybe convince me to give the newer Homeworld 3 a go. (To be fair, this is my gut feeling. I have zero proof of this.)

HW1 and 2 belong in the Pantheon of RTS greats. Beautiful and faithful remaster, must have for any space RTS enthusiasts, still one of the few options for epic beautiful space battles.

Wanted to like it, but it is just too clunky. Controls are terrible. Tried applying a patch from the workshop that's supposed to fix issues with the game, but it crashed. Not jumping through hoops to get this playable imo.

One of the greatest sci fi strategy games of all time. The collection features Homeworld one and two. Both are an absolute must play. Incredible gameplay, story and good graphics. The score is also.....out of this world.
