This game is so boring and the controls themselves are abysmal. The first mission involves a surprise attack that involves you watching NPCs fly right up to your base and completely destroy your fleet, so its designed to be instantly lost. How to win is you have to spend 35 minutes of real time (The game has no fast forward) mining asteroids and then build a fleet to counter the "surprise" attack. This game REALLY tries to trick you over the refund window. Also the music is essentially whale noises, so if you do want to play this game, I recommend you have a second monitor so you can alt tab to youtube while your slow mining ships mine everything. After all of that, you get some really really bored Voice Actors narrating combat and you can progress. This game is not worth 5 dollars. DO NOT BUY.
2/10 Music
4/10 Voice Acting
4/10 Controls
3/10 Tutorial
1/10 Gameplay
2/10 overall Dont buy unless you have nostalgia for the original, this game is complete trash compared to modern RTS games in its class.
Never played the original, but I can see why it was famous.
I loved the game it was great!!! I was first introduced to Homworld via Homeworld: Cataclysm so it was nice to get the back story playing these games. I think it would be outstanding if you could remaster Cataclysm and add it on steam as well!!!
This is a remaster of the original 3D RTS Homeworld, released in 1999, and Homeworld 2, released in 2003. This upgrade combines both games with visual, audio and gameplay improvements to elevate these games to current generation standards. Set in space, Homeworld's plot centers around the survivors of the planet Kharak, destroyed by the Taiidan Empire, making their way to the centre of the galaxy on a giant mothership. They had recently discovered hyperspace technology, as well as clues that lead them to try and find their ancient home. Each mission brings them closer to their goal as they encounter pirates, environmental obstacles and traders along the way. Both games have grand, compelling stories, with Homeworld 2 taking place about 100 years after the first. Perhaps my favourite aspect of the game is the dramatic score, which heightens the atmosphere and is ever fitting for the galactic setting. I particularly love "Adagio for Strings", which sums up these games perfectly.
There is a steeper learning curve involved with these games, mainly because you have to learn to organise your fleet in a 3D plane, which can sometimes get confusing, especially with larger fleets or during intense space battles. These were always challenging games to complete, and unfortunately the difficulty tends to scale with the size of your fleet. In other words I found I often times had to scuttle a large part of my fleet prior to entering the next level or else I would become quickly overwhelmed. Certainly a disappointing part of the games for me.
For those looking for a good Sci-Fi space RTS experience with impressive story elements than look no further. And for those who still want to experience the classic games, they are also included in the package.
TL:DR | Graphics are okay, controls are garbage, games filled with so many bugs I feel like an entomologist, if you paid full price I'm sorry for you loss
How does this buggy broken mess of a game have very positive reviews? Are the players brain dead? This game is trash, some of the worse trash I've every played! The second mission keeps breaking, soft locking me out of progression. Either one ship docks and the rest don't, the Vaygr's frigate doesn't spawn, or I get stuck in a permanent cut scene. The ESC menu is keyed to F10, which would've been nice to know, since ESC is the default key for every single game
I wish that everyone who participated in the creation of this game had Immortality with permanent incremental misfortune! So that I would get the satisfaction knowing, that even after the heat death of the universe, they will continue to persist, for eternity! The satisfaction of knowing that slowly, over the course of time, each day will be progressively worse then the last, until they wish for death! They will actively start seeking out ways to end the misery, each more horrible then the last, but it would never happen!
Even though I got it on a massive sale for $3.50 and was really looking forward to play it. I feel like I was robbed and have nothing but remorse for the poor idiots who payed full price for this. You have my deepest condolences and I pity whatever offspring you might've sired. Please don't taint the gene pool any further, we're struggling enough as it is
EDIT 1: Took almost 3hrs just to beat the second mission due to soft locking
You can't quit the game. Morons
This game created the Genre in my opinion. thanks
Genuinely a fantastic 2 games with a interesting story a amazing game play and awesome soundtrack
The piece of RTS history renewed. Homeworld kicked off a subgenre that is still alive today. It captures imagination like few other sci-fi games, as its structure allows for grand and memorable stories.
Word of caution. Game has difficulty system that revolves around the number of forces you have at the start of every mission. If you get stuck on a too difficult mission, reload old save and retire some ships on a previous mission before it ends. You can literally just leave your large production ships and retire everything else. Enemy forces in the next mission will be far fewer than you having maxed out fleet. Originally this was intended as a placeholder solution for preventing the game being too easy but due to production constrains and lack of better solution it was left in on launch and was never changed. If you want to play with maxed out fleet, you will be in for much more challenging tactical gameplay experience.
They really could've revamped the controls for this game.
Still a classic after all these years. The story, the pacing, the music, the visuals- all ahead of their time and though modern gamers might think it slow it it really isn't.
Have played Homeworld and Homeworld 2 countless hours ever since it came out in 1999. Love the game and the story
Brings back memories from my childhood. Game looks great, no problems running it on a Nvidia 4070 laptop GPU.
Campaign is interestingly difficult. It forces you to prepare your fleet before moving to the next mission. I like the idea of an organic flow of carrying everything youve built into the next area, but it does mean the end of the mission is a resource gathering sim while you refill your armada. I can recommend cheat engine to "speed hack" the game. Its no secret that the levels are large and some units can move slowly.
I'm at mission 9 so far. Be cautious of the tutorial, it runs out after the second mission and they forget to inform you about unit abilities. On mission 8, make sure you kill any fuel pods, i didn't know these would restock the enemies fighters constantly.
The way the transport dock on mothership in missing 2 is a joke. Fix your game they only bump in each other and it takenan eternity
Was fun and challenging at times
Getting back to it so many years after its like new game. Got the bundle with HW2 on some discount and I do not regret it. Interesting story, so far not hard for a casual gamer(me) as long as you get the controls from the good tutorial and keeps the interest. No base building, just scavenge resource and research/build. Love space :).
one of the best games ive ever played. i used to watch my neighbor play this game at his house and was so jealous as a kid. as an adult i found it. and holy crap it still holds up to today. love love love this game.
An amazing revival of the original Homeworld titles. Anyone with an interest in RTS and scifi really need to look at this. I played the original Homeworld and loved every moment of it. The updated graphics really help give the game a new life and 20+ years later it still stands strong on its gameplay. Just goes to show how solid of a game it was.
The story doesn't feel too rushed and has its moments where it makes you feel as alone and isolated as the crew of the mothership are and this is supported by the soundtrack. This was the game that made me fall in love with 'adigo for strings'.
There are a few bugs in the game that make one level in specifically unbeatable. But if you want to research that I wont spoil it here. But I highly advice you look up to at least see what level it is so you aren't going insane trying to figure out if you are in a no win situation or not.
This game is great, it's homeworld with newer graphics, but it also keeps the exact same storry and feeling. Worth a buy for any homeworld fan!
I can still play Homeworld!
A wonderful story with fantastic enviroments.
eons ago I was crushed to find my copy of homeworld 1 broken...
And when they remastered it with such wonderful care I genuinely began crying.
I've had this remastered version since it was released.
Sadly now homeworld remastered collection is now an even better game by the fact that homeworld 3 is a disaster...
Fun, but difficult, with a good overarching story
very fun but hard i am also bad
Homeworld 1 Remastered:
Gameplay: Great
Story: Great
Controls: Great
Graphics: Good for its time
Length: Good
Cutscenes: Alright
Mechanics: RTS Combat in a 3D space is hard but great.
Homeworld 2 Remastered:
Didn't finish, it's hard even after modding it to adjust difficulty.
just so we're clear; Homeworld 1 is fantastic but Homeworld 2 is an absolute piece of trash... it's always been this way, in terms of gameplay, and the Remaster did nothing to change that. the beautiful pacing of HW1 is still an enjoyable adventure and the unbalanced nightmare of HW2 is still a frenetic and anxious mess, but at least now they both have much prettier graphics lol...
I played the first Homeworld back when it was released in 1999, as a kid, and since then I have been a loyal fan, replaying the game over and over. Gearbox put their heart into the remaster, which exceeded all my expectations, especially when it comes to the first game. The pioneer of 3D real-time strategy was heavily criticized at launch due to its terribly controls, which were fixed in the second game. That’s why I played the second part the most. However, in terms of story, the first one is definitely stronger. In terms of combat, dynamics, and tactics, the second one.
But what unites both games is the unforgettable atmosphere, which makes them the best space strategy games. Still unrivaled, even 25 years later. 10/10.
I'm not a fan of rant reviews that are based around one bug. But in this case I have to make an exception. I bought this, believing I could play hw1 classic.
But it contains a game-breaking bug where ships won't dock, that hasn't been fixed for over a year.
Re-releasing old games in a state more broken than in they originally were, doesn't deserve my money.
This is the last time I bought this Gearbox game
And next time Gearbox closure that's the good point
This is one of those cases where the originals are better than sequel.
yes
For a remaster, this game expects a lot of effort outside of the game, from both the players and the modders...
It wouldn't even run for me without Running Large Address Aware. Large Address Aware is a program that basically makes older programs recognize that there's more than 2GB of RAM on a machine, as when this game originally came out on the older 32bit systems, they couldn't have more than 2GB of RAM.
Then to actually make the game playable, you need a mod to turn off the broken AI "balancing" or you'll be punished in the story for doing better by being swarmed by more ships of a type that counters how you did better. But the mods don't seem to be as well maintained as a bunch of modders switched over to Homeworld 3 for a more powerful engine to work around (though that game has significantly negative reviews, so who knows how it's doing)
If you can make the effort and do the troubleshooting to make the game work, it's a great game, though it's UI is dated, and there's a bunch of dated camera stuff that happens as well.
And to be clear, I'm not recommending this, but it's due to all the effort to get it to work, which shouldn't be necessary in a remaster.
Instant classic.
10/10 IGN to much space
great classic RTS
This has not aged well. The game is unbearably slow there are many situations where you must wait. There is virtually no tactical options (just attack all enemies, no maneuvering). And worst of all, many missions need info that you get on the first try to complete successfully, for example, if you move your big ships near enemy capital ship they get instantly mind-controlled. Or sending units outside designated areas will damage them, but it will notify you once your entire resource collection fleet is half dead already and can't get back in time.
This game is amazing so far is there zero bugs or glitches. I really enjoyed this game and the dynamics and open world
great game well worth the money
A truly memorable single player campaign. This isn't a perfect re-master, but it's worth picking up to experience a classic. As for the multiplayer... it was groundbreaking back in its time, but RTS games have come a long way since.
10/10
It has a steep learning curve but it is fun once you get it.
I die lots but great game
Even after multiple patches, this remaster is unfortunately VERY buggy and broken. The game crashes regularly, and the dev abandoned the game shortly after release. Even without all that, there were odd design choices that stemmed from a desire to have every race playable against each other in multiplayer. So, HW1 ships don't have the fuel mechanic, and their harvesters attach to asteroids like in HW2, but they still produce ships singly instead of HW2 squadron system. And the multiplayer ended up an uplayable mess, so those hamfisted mechanics were ultimately unnecessary anyway, but they persist into the single player campaign. This whole project was just completely botched, and not even community mods can salvage it.
excellent strategy game and the 1st one has an outstanding story. I find the pve fun too.
This game is a true classic! They don't make games like this but every 15 years!
When I was 9 years old, I asked my mother if I could have Starcraft for Christmas. This being a late request, she went to the local supermarket to buy it for me. Sadly, it was not available and instead got me this game (the original Homeworld, in its Game of the Year box). Since it was not Starcraft, I rejected it at first, but after a couple of months of neglect, curiosity was piqued after inspecting the box closer. When I finally played it, it was one of the greatest experience I've ever had as a child. To this day, I am thankful that Mother got me this game rather than Stracraft, and will be forever glad that such an accident occured. If Mother actually had brought me Starcraft, I would not have found this masterpiece of a game and get so entangeld with its lore. Thank you, Mother for unknowingly giving me the greatest Christmas gift ever. It was not the gift I wanted, but the one I needed.
I only downloaded it so I can play Homeworld 2 + R.E.A.R.M. mod, which is utterly fantastic and makes the base game feel a bit lacklustre in ship options. Utterly gorgeous models by Pouk are straight out of the homeworld universe and maybe even better. I have adored this game since 2004 and will continue to do so.
I'm hesitant to recommend this because the remasters of HW1 and 2 look good but have noticeable bugs, some of which are fixed by a player patch mod. Remasters should be polished.
The gameplay, story, and pacing of HW1 are great. HW2's story and pacing are bad, becoming a boring slog between the AI scaling and padded missions.
It was worth it for $4 on sale.
Game requires you to accept an EULA, so I cannot recommend it.
The game consists of 2 remasters (HW 1 and 2), 2 classics (HW Classic 1 and 2) and multiplayer. I played the campaigns of HW 1 and 2 (and also one bonus mission and HW 1 Classic's tutorial to complete 2 achievements relating to them).
HW 1 was a great game — very enjoyable mechanics (for both aggressive and cheeky players) and sufficient pacing to prepare for next missions. Story was very nice (except the lack of explanation of MC's character) with dialogs that really made the game feel very human despite the lack of human physical presence in the game. HW2 on the other hand, … IMO game mechanics were mostly degraded and the story was so hastily presented that it left me unsatisfied.
One of the best series ever made (barring hw3) and as of now its on sale at 3.50! If you read this you should buy it NEOW. :steamhappy:
my favorite game of all time.
Classic space battle franchise can't go wrong with the graphics and instantaneous skirmishes that can entertain for hours on end. get it on sale for dirt cheap
