I'm played this game on and off over a year, after trying the demo when it was available. The universe is very immersive and really enjoyed the choices offered in the game. Definitely recommending this gem to friends and foes !
On rails walking simulator. I feel misled by the trailers for the game. Spent several hours in the game, and "nothing" happens. Lots of inane conversation over the radio with zero consequences. Examples: "What do you want to name the probe? "What do you want to name this rock formation?". All answers are multiple choice -- and worse, no matter how you answer the questions, it's pointless because you're not making any decisions. It's just prattle. So this is basically an on-rails walking simulator with very little story. On the bright side, the art is good. As a game, it's a waste of time.
Close to giving it a thumbs down. the game does have alot of minor bugs and sadly i ran into alot of progression related bugs.....
However was a interesting story, gameplay isent really there as its a walking simulator and alot of dialogue.
As a lover of sci-fi and immersive narrative experiences, I adored this game. The voice acting is excellent and the choices you make do matter in the story. You'll be rewarded with a comic book-style summary of your story.
I was not familiar with the source material, and I went in not knowing what to expect, and I recommend doing the same. So, don't look anything else up. Just get it and jump in.
Love how the game unfolds its story, lovely graphics and scenery. The length of the game is perfect, reminds me of firewatch where you always have radio contact with a person som it doesnt feel so Lonely walking around in the empty world.
Cons:
-Sprint is limited
-not that good frames on the steamdeck
-the paths sometimes look wierd(climbing the steep paths instead of climbing what looks possible)
Very enjoyable. I do not think I would recommend this universally, but if you are in the mood for a well written scifi from the 1960s, then give this a go.
Not recommended. Game was extremely clunky for me and it became tedious to finish. Perhaps for fans of the novel, otherwise just skip it.
plot is cool af but unreal engine is usual suspect of poor optimisation, had to play on mid settings with 15-30 fps, not really enjoyable but story is fine
Interesting setting and story, but
holy shit it is absolutely insufferable with inexplicable timers on seemingly random simple dialogue options, that sometimes start running out while an existing dialogue is still ongoing (despite not being interruptions).
While talking with a friend about some other choices I could've made, i learned that apparently this game uses a kind of ridiculous time-travel-movie level of a 'butterfly effect', where some results change drastically based on choices that shouldn't affect them in the slightest.
Also the game can obnoxiously set you on a path that you didn't mean to go, while you were only exploring your options, with no way back.
Boring. Navigation is awful and very clunky. Walking is super slow. You have no autonomy in where to move your character, they can only go along a specific route. Climb a 6 inch rock? Nope, not if it isn't programmed in as the game's route. Climb a 4 foot ledge directly next to that 6 inch rock? Of course, that's the only way you are allowed to go. And don't get me started on driving in the rover, visibility is awful, controls are awful. The whole game was frustrating and boring, it's really just a story that is being read to you, very very slowly.
Ah, The Invincible—the game where you’re a scientist armed with atompunk gadgets, searching for your missing crew on a creepy alien planet. Sounds thrilling, right? Well, buckle up, because it’s less "thrill ride" and more "Firewatch... but in space... with existential dread and slower walking."
The visuals? Stunning. The soundtrack? Absolutely haunting. The movement speed? Oh, slower than molasses in a Siberian winter. You’ll spend more time walking than investigating, and by the time you reach your objective, you might feel like you’ve aged in real life.
But wait, there’s more! Invisible walls block your path, because apparently Yasna can outthink robots but can’t step over a rock. And let’s talk about the endings—11 of them, they say! But don’t get excited, they’re just slightly different flavors of “nothing really happens, roll credits.”
It’s gorgeous, atmospheric, and deeply philosophical... if you can survive the glacial pacing. 10/10 for the vibes, 3/10 for walking simulator rage. Would recommend if you enjoy pondering humanity’s place in the universe while staring at loading prompts.
Great game with excellent voice acting, intense narrative and immersive visuals. The 1960s-inspired art style is absolutely gorgeous.
Performance was a letdown though, had issues with frame drops after a certain more dense part halfway through the game, and a lot of textures pop-in which was very distracting an immersion breaking.
If these performance issues are addressed, I’d rate it a solid 8.5/10. As it stands, based on my experience, I’d give it a 7/10. For reference on performance, my specs are: RTX 4070, Core i7-12700, and 16GB of RAM.
Per aspera ad astra ( Through hardship to the stars )
But not all stars should be revealed. Not all mysteries should be solved.
Not Everything Everywhere is For Us
Great atmosphere and art style! I like the retro soviet kind of style.
This game doesn't require "effort"... its more like a movie. Its absolutely stunning. We need more games with the Retro Futuristic / Atompunk theme, especially space games. This one is well worth the price tag.
I love that this game exists because it pays hommage to a type of sci-fi that is sadly not very popular anymore back from when the genre was actual about science, scientists, exploration and asking big questions about humanity without being cynical about it, always giving some spark of hope that humanity might overcome its weaknesses. Not just another flavor of the broader action genre. The kind of sci-fi that inspired the older Star-Trek series.
The game itself looks great, tells a fascinating story and is entertaining to the very end, even if it feels a bit rushed in the final 15 minutes or so.
Highly recommend it to anyone else who can appreciate the experience of exploring a strange planet without action being a major focus.
I loved the game, good story line and everything, but I find it really and I mean really short I have played the whole story only in 13 hours of gameplay, I don't know if that is just me used to play 50-100 hours to finish up a game but I think more can be added to the story of the game.
Amazing story-telling, voice-acting and visuals.
It sadly has technical problems with constant massive stuttering on some maps.
Still an impressive experience, and now I need that novel it's based on.
OK, I am giving a thumbs up, but that's because we only get up or down.
It is a Good story - but I'd not call this a GAME. This a a visual novel with very few choices that matter to the grand outcome until the end (if then). It is so on rails as to leave little to actually "Explore".
That said, it is gorgeous, the soundtrack is great and ominous. The slide styles blend into the comic (I got the deluxe version with the soundtrack and comic extra - prob not worth it). It is fun. But game? Nah. Pretty Visual Novel - yes.
Mint writing, pacing and world design. The sound design and voice acting are also on point.
Gorgeous story with 11 endings, beautifull views, and the vibe, the immesion that the sounds create is just amazing its definetly worth the time and money. Even with some visual bug that I had I still recommend you to feel these emotions that I have felt for last week. Gonna order a book rn
While not perfect, it's a captivating story with beautiful art direction.
This a narrative game, with 40's style retro space aesthetic. It's based on a novel, and throughout the game there's comic book version that opens up as you progress through the game.
This is a disappointment. I found the first act is really interesting, but act 2 and 3 just meanders and doesn't know what to it's trying to do. And the abrupt ending had me laugh out loud just how bad it is.
A narrative game needs something good to make it worth while. Normally that's the story, but even a bad story uses amazing visuals to made it worth it.
The Invincible has neither, and I can't recommend this game.
Очень приятная история об одиночестве и тяге к познанию, которую немного портит геймплей. Впрочем история, персонажи, актёры, дизайн мира и окружения более чем заслуживают того, чтобы вы потерпели этот немного неуклюжий геймплей.
Excellent story. This is basically a visual novel, so the player interaction is largely walking and talking. So you walk some, and then you talk some. Then more walking. Then some talking. All that being said, I played it for eight hours straight. Just a very good sci-fi tale.
interesting story, well told, amazing retro sci fi setting.
Visually nice, but not no meaningful gameplay. If you're looking for a graphic novel with minimal engagement or a slow walking/driving simulator then fill your boots. But really not what I was looking for.
The Invincible is an intriguing game, it reminds me of The Martian movie, although there is a philosophical story behind. But as in the Martian movie, you will be walking alone a lot through a beautiful alien planet. I guess that will not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you like games like that, I recommend it
Excellent score. Amazing story and great graphics. A one of kind type of game in my opinion.
My only downside is that the story could have been longer.
The Invincible is a visually stunning and atmospheric game that offers a compelling narrative experience. While it may not appeal to everyone due to its slow pace, fans of narrative-driven adventure games and sci-fi enthusiasts will likely find it a worthwhile journey.
This is a great sci-fi game. This game really keeps you hooked from start to finish, not to mention that it also presents amazing scientific concepts.
More of an interactive space mystery movie than a full game, but still really good. The narrative really makes the experience special.
I like the story, the gameplay isn't challenging but it is very immersive. You're limited. It's frustrating to do things. You feel like you're a scientist in a space suit and not an action hero, which might not be fun for someone looking for Eldin Ring in Space, but is fun for someone who wants to play through an interactive sci fi film where choices matter.
If you play this game, which I would recommend doing so (hence this review), I have a few pointers.
Immersion is very important in order to gain a sense of curiosity and awe. Don't bother playing this on a Steam Deck. A proper monitor or TV with decent speakers/headphones is a must. A dark room is not required.
Inspiration was taken from the game Firewatch, so imagine you're sitting down to read a short story or watch a movie equally as much as playing a game. Place yourself in Yasna's shoes, take to heart the gravity of her situation, and apply your own sense of morality to dialogue choices.
Lastly, don't worry if the game doesn't initially hook you. I purchased this months ago, played about an hour, then shelved it until a few days ago. Since picking it back up, I'd play about 1-2 hours at a time before stopping and doing other things, and wonderment for what was around the next corner kept me coming back. In total, it took me about 9 hours to finish while exploring most of the nooks and crannies, but not all of them.
I was thinking for a while what I would compare this experience to and whether I like it or not.
The visual and sound design are beautiful. The controls often feel super clunky. I noticed lags quite often. You make many decisions but it seems like only a very small amount of decisions actually matter. In terms of gameplay I often asked myself why I am actually controlling a character and not just watching a movie - felt more appropriate to me.
If it was a movie I'd compared it to one of the few interactive movies like bandersnatch and I wouldn't bother paying the full price of 30€ for it - max 15€ if it is done really well.
As a story focussed game I can best compare it to Firewatch which I really enjoyed playing exactly once.
My problem with this game is:
- I get it is meant to be explored - but exploration is no fun at all due to controls, slow pace, and rareness of relevant things to discover.
- Even though I rationally understand it's a game where my decision make a difference it didn't feel that way a single time which does not motivate me to play it again to potentially explore alternative storylines etc.
- The story is super exciting and interesting - basically so interesting that you want to enjoy it in one sitting and for that the game is too long - not because of the story - but because of some terrible slow pacing and sections.
If you really have a bit too much money and spare time - go ahead and give it a try.
Feel's a bit like a long interactive movie.
I wouldn't recommend to buy for the full price.
The main thrust of the game is around survival and for me wandering an unfamiliar planet looking for survivors was a great experience. The control system is easy to pickup after a few "how do I turn this dial" moments and once you get used to the point and click event triggers this makes for mostly seamless gameplay. The graphics are marvellous in that I took time to admire the Regis-scapes and sheer size of various man-made structures and vehicles.
I found the story engaging, and different from other story-driven games, in that the drive of the main character had different choices which vastly affected the ending and did not rely on time-pressured button thwacking.
The blend of walking and driving was balanced and enjoyable that set pace of the game. I would have liked to be able to config the rover a bit more to adapt to different situations, like change the power pack, or a wheel, or replace a headlight (Pacific Drive style :-)) The use of the instruments were engaging but also not cumbersome in their frequency.
I experienced some graphical glitches from characters standing in the T-pose until you got a bit closer and rock textures rendering when you looked at them (and they were near textures, not far) but on the whole, nothing that some polish bug fixing would not iron out.
I only took 6 hours to complete this, so it was a little short, but its a story game, not a levelling up game.
From the ending I settled on, I really hope there is a Part 2...
Amazing experience.
I'm not going to count how many times objects pop into view or FPS falls under 30. If you are that kind of gamer, I have nothing to tell you about this game, except for "I don't care".
What I found here is the experience of the old Sci-Fi:
* Believable environment - the actual alien planet!
* Dangers of a real space expedition: falling and puncturing your suit or breaking your leg, or getting hit by other unknown environment factor. Not absurd modern tropes all-teeth-aliens who were only waiting for humans to arrive to eat them (anyone heard of incompatible proteins?)
* Retro Sci-Fi technology. Practically how I imagined it reading the stories written in the 50s-60s.
* People! Real first spacers should have Ph.D.s, be responsible and respectful to each other, and also be people and not just tropes that move the plot forward.
This is literally the first game ever that scratched the above itches.
The end of the story is a bit crammed, true - but again, in a believable way. Doesn't spoil it for me a bit, because what else would you expect other than a final confrontation.
Story
I have mixed feelings about the story. Overall I'd say the story is great, but the pacing is terrible during the first chapter. I also felt spoiled by playing the demo (which was available before this game was released), which reduced my enjoyment.
However, I enjoy the setting of the universe and the planet itself. I got excited hearing about Commonwealth and The Alliance, despite it's only mentioned by the characters. Talking about characters, I like them quite a bit. Although I wish both Yasna and Novik talk less.
While the game offers lots of choices, most of them only change dialogue outcomes where only 4 choices impact the ending you can get. There are 11 endings. But some of them are very similar and all of them feel either abrupt or ambiguous.
Gameplay
In short, it's just combination of walking simulation with a bit of driving and using some equipment. The game doesn't let you die by accident (e.g. falling into a hole or drowning) which help casual players, but also slightly reduces my immersion. Overall, it's just an OK experience. But it hurt replayability value, where I decided to see some endings I couldn't see without re-doing few chapters on YouTube.
Visual & Audio
The visual is simply great. It has a decent atompunk style and overall atmosphere which makes me feel I'm really looking at desolate and hostile planet. Although some animation could use improvement. Both SFX and voice acting are also great.
Conclusion
Overall, The Invincible is a somewhat good story-focused sci-fi game. Although you might want to be patient and wait for sale.
I can't say that I was pleased with this game, but I don't want to leave a bad review either.
The game is a walking simulator with an exploration of the surrounding world and was not without some bugs, as well as character animation leaves much to be desired.
Of the advantages, I can note the originality of the plot.
Average game: I rate 5/10
i like the work of stanislaw lem, i also usually like walking simulators but this game felt like an endless boredom and torture. the characters are just bland.
sure there is an interesting scifi story here, but it could be told in half an hour without omitting something of interest. the game feels extremely stretched for no reason besides wasting my time.
iam playing this for 4 hours now and still waiting that something exciting will happen. i fear it won't. i cannot explain why this game has such high ratings.
STORY- Is nice like a movie..well if you like reserch movie. But that is all..
Gameplay- 0/10.. is no gaming you just walk around and press what game TELL YOU to press.
Only good what you can do is make different choice from conversation dialog and then do something different in that aspect, but ...
I just to try make game more fun with making "INTERACTION HINTS" Off in setting, but that also no help becasue some part of game you just can't "figure out" and pass without pressing "what game tell you to press". and that feature is also make so bad, that you cant see difference to figure it out yourself when you need to do semething important.
Sometime is just see some Landscape or Paper among 100 of them, Button or Path to climb down when you clearly can go down in other way, but you just need to be where game tell you need to stay.. (and not to mentoin that other option "disable bacground hint" and "wall white paint" do absolutely nothing)
That all is just shame for this tipe of game.. only fun to me is becasue i play with Gyro movement with my controller, and others people with keyboard and mouse well -good luck....
GRAPHIC- Whell that is very good is nice to wondering around but planet is just like Mars so... other problem is if your sistem can run it.. i dont know why is so bad FPS is just slow sometime, and some bugs in game...poor fps and if you reduce graphic setting is not worth to play anymore..
Best story and graphics ive seen
An absolutely wonderful story, stunning graphics, and great gameplay. A worthy tribute to the genius of Stanisław Lem. The developer could consider creating something based on Solaris in the future
Historia absolutamente maravilhosa, gráficos incríveis, ótima jogabilidade, Um homenagem digna da genialidade de Stanisław Lem ... o desenvolvedor poderia fazer algo baseado em solaris no futuro
Recommended, but with significant qualifications, as described below.
This game is HEAVILY story-focused, and honestly feels at times more like an interactive movie than a game. Especially at first, the place is slow -- so slow, I nearly abandoned it after the first 30 minutes. The controls and movement also tend to be rather clunky, and the environment sometimes difficult to navigate.
However, I dearly love the retro-futuristic aesthetic, which this game has in spades (with a Soviet / cosmonaut twist), and the music and environments are hauntingly beautiful. Many times the game's visuals reminded me of the gorgeous paintings that used to grace pulp sci-fi paperbacks of the 50s and 60s. This, and the excellent writing and voice acting, got me through the slow start -- and when the story started to pick up, it was deeply mysterious, intriguing, and thought-provoking. When the game ended, I was glad I had played it and definitely felt I'd gotten my money's worth.
So, I definitely RECOMMEND the game -- BUT if the downsides described above concern you, you may want to think twice about investing in it, or possibly wait for a sale.
A great experience, indeed... BUT... why limit the game to a storyteller with basically NO WAY to do something wrong or die? Why limit the environment space and not even allow the player to pay attention to fall down somewhere? I do understand that this was probably done on purpose but, I believe this game could have been EVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL if there were many mechanics and interactions. I mean, the radiation tool was used one or two times, the radar three or four times during the entire game. In other words, why not adding ANY RISK in the gameplay? That was a very brave move.
Memory Spike midway through crashing game and preventing progress. Judging by the Steam forums, the devs have known about it for a while.
Just hate games that autosave exactly where you going to DIE EVERYTIME you RESTORE/RESTART. Means you have to RESTSTORE FROM THE LAST stupid autosave, which is ALWAYS 2 hours of going around in circles all over again! Now I have a giant robot thing that melts its way through rock and snuffs me as soon as I start, GREAT time for an AUTOSAVE BOZOs.
ALSO, made for two fisted stupid stick control (X-Box, arcade side-scroller style, etc.), Hate them because my left thumb DOES not work correctly and the controller NEEDS 2, count them, 2 thumbs to CONTROL the game. Great graphics & story (as far as I have gotten) otherwise.
Yes, oh I DO want to reccomend this game to anyone who likes classical science fiction and some good, and I mean *good* storytelling. This is the hardest sci-fi game I have played in years. Damn, I think this sci-fi is so hard you can crack diamonds with it!
An amazing story, an amazing style, a gripping story and amazing voice acting from averybody involved!
A great scifi adventure!
Highly recommend if you're fan of scifi literature and movies.
It's a masterpiece of 11bit gigachads
A great classic sci-fi game. While it is very linear there are some player choices, it's not completely on rails, and it feels quite immersive and enjoyable. It's not too long. It doesn't waste your time, and solving the mystery is engaging. If you are more action oriented or focused on mechanics, it might not be the game for you, but otherwise, I would definitely recommend it.
