Skater XL - The Ultimate Skateboarding Game

Tried to get into this but on recent days it just felt like a wasted potential of a good game but this is only my opinion

it's basically if session and skate had a baby, i really love it and it's so fun but for 30 bucks nahh... the game is literally the same as it was in 2020 like deadass has barely gotten anything else, and on console??? everything is so limited. i will always play it but it's just not going anywhere lmao

I've been playing this game since the alpha tests back in 2017, and I can confidently say that it can be an incredible experience if you're willing to roll up your sleeves and dive into the world of mods. With the right tweaks, adjustments, and enhancements, the game transforms into something genuinely impressive. We're talking realistic gravity, finely tuned flip speeds, real-world maps, and gameplay depth that the base game doesn't even attempt to offer. The modding community essentially carried this game on its back, and honestly, it deserves more credit than the actual dev team.

Because, let’s be real, since the game’s official release in 2020, the developers have done the absolute bare minimum. Meaningful updates? Practically nonexistent. Improvements to core mechanics or new features? Don’t hold your breath. And for the love of everything, they still won’t add a stats menu, a basic feature players have been begging for. So if you’re hoping for a well-rounded, fully realized vanilla experience, prepare to be disappointed. The base game is about as exciting as a blank spreadsheet.

That said, the modding community is still kicking and they’re doing amazing work. It's a passionate and relatively active group that is constantly creating fresh content and fixing the things the devs won't touch. If you're willing to mod the game, there's a surprisingly deep and enjoyable experience waiting for you with a ton of variety and replay value.

So here’s the bottom line. I do think the game is worth playing, but only if you’re ready to mod the hell out of it. If you’re coming in expecting a complete and satisfying experience straight out of the box, I totally get why you'd bounce off it. Honestly, I wouldn't blame you.

So, I grabbed Skater XL on Steam, and honestly, I'm pretty hooked. The thing that instantly grabbed me was the physics. They're just dope. The way the board flips and rotates feels incredibly natural. It's not just about button mashing; you actually feel like you're controlling the board with your body.

The controls themselves are a big win. They make sense! Each stick controls a foot, which means you have a direct connection to what's happening. It takes a little getting used to, but once it clicks, it's pure satisfaction.

Modding community? Straight up Amazing. They've taken this game to a whole new level. New maps, gear, and even gameplay tweaks. It's like having an endless supply of fresh content. Plus, the game looks clean. The environments are well-designed, and everything feels polished.

Overall, I'm loving it. If you're into skating games, Skater XL is definitely worth checking out.

My skater xl is up to date and I just purchased the DLC but they aren't showing up in the player editor, its just blank or invisible. Anyone can help me out on this?

Love this game but it does fuckin suck

Yeah it's pretty good! Not quite the skate 3 killer as there are no missions so this very much a sandbox game of sorts. It's been slow to progress with new updates being few and far between with nothing massive being added to the game from what I can tell. But in all honesty, the community made maps (YAKY is a god) are excellent.
You can mod the shit out of this as well really quite easily and it's worth probably about 15 quid so wait till it's on sale. It's asking a lot of money for what it is.

Now for the developer: Please don't just leave it in this state. You have a good thing going here. But the community obviously wants more. Figure out a scoring system and put us head to head online in some old school style trick attack or THPS style graffiti challenges. Or ya know... pull your own game concepts together. We've been waiting probably years at this points for something other than mindless skateboarding.

Honestly Not bad, It sucks you cant get off board like in skate, but its alot more realistic and good amount of players.

This game is sick but the real problem is this : The developers are a bit lazy and the best way to play the game is downloading a lot of mods. It's weird that you have to download an entire mod to just modify the game physics to make everything play better. Map wise its like mandatory to download mods or you won't have any really, same with cosmetics.

Grinding and flip tricks are pretty easy to do. transistion/bowls/vert skating is a bit harder imo.

Game is really cool, I just wish by now they would have incorporated all the popular mods into their base game.

Great game, played it for hundreds of hours. the revolutionary analog control system felt so natural, left stick left and right right leg..as close as it gets to real life tricks converted into a gampad. skate 3 was already a big change from the square/circle/x/triangle/ set up like in thps and thtas coming from a thps veteran.
I with the mods would be a little more user friendly, or at least the most important ones, like pop height, manual catch (idk why ppl even play this game without a manual catch :P) and few others,. i recently installed the game but was overwhelmed with the amount of different little custom menus to tweak the game to just how you like it which is good thing overall but takes some research and relearning few things after a few years break,
Does ps5 verions also get same mods as on pc or just maps are considered mods on consoles?

Standouts:
- Each analog stick on the controllers controls the feet

Pro's:
- skating feels both realistic and arcade-y (mix of Session and Skate)

cons:
- zero story/challenges/depth
- Each "update" is a community made map, with zero addition to any QOL, new game modes, in game stats, etc.
- Feels like the dev's post these 'updates' blissfully unaware of all the negative feedback in their comments.
- $45cad for this is outrageous for what there is to offer

I have two different gamepads, both of which I tried with numerous 'fixes' from around the internet. From what I can gather, this has been a problem for FIVE YEARS. This game should be removed from the store, it's just straight up broken.

Game was great until my controller refused to work for the game. My controller works in every other steam game except this one. I just want to play the game again.

Save your money. The game feels unfinished and years after development, it hasn't gotten any better. I have installed this game 5 times over to see if it improves and it does not. An option in the game itself will produce a red error screen that will take over the entire screen and make it unplayable without a reset. I had high hopes for this game. But spend your money and interest somewhere else.

Don't know if I actually got through the tutorial because there was absolutely no purpose in this game. Customization was as minimal as absolutely possible, controls were great if you could get passed the fact of your characters ankles were basically Gumby, but you would break your neck over a leaf. Shreds were minimal, definitely not the hype I was hoping to fill my needs

No developer updates(non community made) in years, while things are left unfinished/broken. Just like dad coming back from getting milk..............

So i have been playing both Skater XL and Session: Skate Sim. They both have the same problem. That camera man view. I just want an option to have a normal camera view. I don't need my camera angle looking like I have a filmer fallowing me. I'm not getting clips, just playing the game. Other than that I can recommend both games for different reasons.

its decent, not worth $40 but would buy on sale or if ur really into skating games like skate, tony hawk, or thrasher skate and destroy. it feels like a early access game and lacks content but can be fun to skate around with its unique controls. i bet a sequel would be incredible but id recommend emulating the skate games on rpcs3 and waiting for a sale

I really enjoy this game, it's very nice to play if you feel like having a chill and relaxing skate sesh

As someone who grew up with the skate series, I was looking for something to scratch the skateboarding sim itch. I really enjoy the controls for this as each thumb-stick corresponds to your feet. I highly recommend getting mods to help personalize your experience. Great game to just shut your brain off for and skate.

Honestly the vanilla game is meh and I'd rather play session if this game wasn't mod compatible. But with mods, this game is actually insane. Thank god I finally got a pc and decided to put time into modding because this is literally the only game I can just shut my mind off, play, and just chill. I would 1000% recommend getting this game if you intend on modding it.

Broken, controller support broken. Not playable. Avoid. My game time was a long time ago but the devs have abandoned game.
