I've watched numerous let's plays of this game when I was a child and decided to buy it years later. Having had played it again after all this time, and not remembering much, Beyond Two Souls still affected me the same way it did back then - from the visuals to the detailed, astonishing and tear-jerking story. I strongly recommend this game for those who enjoy interactive story games.
This is 2025. I'm playing Beyond two souls, and saying this is a great looking game that came out so long ago. Really a great story, I would recommend this game.
Started off great but slowly became one of the more miserable gaming experiences I ever had. My frustrations stem from to the shoddy control scheme, poorly communicated QTEs, illusion of player agency (no, your choices don't really matter) and character development that is often nonsensical. The narrative overstayed its welcome for me about halfway through and tried my patience fully. Only finished it out of stubbornness and won't revisit.
Just when I thought they finally got it right, once again, they mess up. The timing of controls doesn't match her movement which is 50% of gameplay. Seriously, how does this pass for a "good game" when a good chunk of the gameplay ruins it
As someone who played this on the PS4, the controls are just as janky. I would have liked it if when doing an action as Aiden it required either... WASD + IJKL, WASD + Arrow Keys, or WASD + Mouse (like it is when seeing memories). Good game though, if only they fixed the ugly black bars.
Just start the game with "New Remixed Order", it makes more sense for first timers.
I had so much hope for this game, watch a play through many years ago when it came out and thought it was incredible (I was 13 years old). I am now 23, my media literacy has improved, I have much more historical context and better critical thinking skills. These are all things you must lack to actually believe this story is a good one. Oh and standards. I will now break down the good and the bad. (I will not be harping on technical limitations of the time or character performances the motion capture artists were great)
If you are a person with a conscience, or any historical knowledge this game WILL be infuriating and you will not enjoy yourself.
The good:
-Graphics have held up really well in a time when most games released run like shit, smear textures and are pumped and dumped at mach 7. The motion capture is the most impressive, character models are a genuine benchmark that most devs fail to reach when doing a story heavy game.
-Strong start and many interesting characters right off the bat with strong casting decisions.
-Some of the story lines were handled well and had a satisfying conclusion.
-Elliot Page had a stellar performance and carried the game on their back
-Homeless arc was the most heartfelt and executed well given the studios track record. They are some of the few side characters you feel connected to. (Not the only ones)
-That's about all, there is for the good.
The BAD:
-The game seems to have a pacing issue, the first half was really solid but nearing the conclusion the wheel fall off the cart very fast. I don't just mean a story pacing issue, the development timeline or passion (I guess?) put into some parts of the game clearly do not match others. There is a serious issue with quality consistency.
-Most of the characters are not easily liked or just seem flat
-William Dafoe's character seemed almost wasted, not much was built around him or his motivations. Yes they give him some but it seems rushed and very surface level. The implication is there but the game fails to explore that to any depth.
-Cole is simply there for unconditional support and nothing else. Good guy I don't know anything about him except that he cares for Jodie deeply.
-No your choices don't really matter, except for the very last act and there is a clear ending the game tries to force you into.
-Game mechanics have never been quantic dreams strong suit and everyone has layed into them over the quick time events but dear God was this abhorrent.
-Convoluted pacing tries to hide the games weak points and hopes that you, the player, will just gloss over them.
-The story COMPLETELY fails to address *most* of the actual ethical questions/concerns it raises and scoots you right on into the next section.
-Whiplash and Jarring are two qualities that the game exemplifies in every conceivable way.
SPOILER WARNING:
-Building on the quality and consistency. There is a part of the game with a large environment you must traverse that is a war zone in Africa. It is maybe the single largest map in the entire game and it looks great the entire time, clearly no cut corners. There was a lot of effort put into this section and proves that in later parts of the game (chronologically) there was not a game engine or technical limitation with larger environments and that they COULD have had the same attention to detail and level of effort put in. This part of the game juxtaposed with the Navajo portion is atrocious. Went from next gen look and feel to ps2 graphics and flip flops between the two depending on Quantic Dream's clear political standing. The white savior complex is real and the Navajo portion of the game is appalling. Not to mention the most attention was put into you assassinating a democratically elected leader in a war torn Africa and killing black people left and right to accomplish your goal. Yes this does narratively serve to push Jodie away from the CIA, only temporarily. You inevitably end up serving them once again and sabotage other military programs that could compete with the USA, so they can have a monopoly on (spiritual) violence as well. This is standard practice for the American gov. and is oddly accurate. My issue is with how the game forces you into this role and how Jodie enables them and gives little if any push back. The closest thing you can get to justice is one higher-up gets sucker punched and another guy (the clearly intended love interest) loses an eye. This does not and will not ever mean that all is forgiven. The narrative assumes that it is. Jodie's familial relations are clearly not important until the end and it seems rushed and unexplored. Besides William Dafoe no other character motivations are so much as glossed over. Addressing the homeless arc, the conclusion to those characters magically getting their shit together bc they have a child to take care of is total bullshit and fails to talk about systemic causes of homelessness or even how you could escape it.
-NONE of this is surprising given quantic dreams allegations and scandals about a toxic workplace. There is a clear bias. The narrative pretends to be deep and touches on a lot of important topics that are complex but when push comes to shove it shy's away. In 2025, we know that Ellen Page (now Elliot) was uncomfortable with themselves being woman, so it just feels gross when the game goes out of its way to sex up their character (not romance). Just unnecessary fan service. Not to mention how weak the romance options actually feel, they were more a selling point, not quite an afterthought but they might as well have been.
-Overall the game was a disappointment and genuinely frustrating to play through as I had no real control over the direction of the game, that inevitably falls flat on its face with the conclusion, it feels more like a half baked prologue to story that was never meant to be. Thank fuck I only paid $5 but my time was wasted, I WANT MY 15 HOURS BACK.
God awful controls but super intriguing story.
The middle child of Quantic Dreams: forgettable. Bad camera, but better than the predecessor, just like the controls. However I believe the story is worse, but maybe it's only a matter of how slowly it's told.
This sequencing in which the story is told makes no sense. The controls are wonky. The story is poorly written and the dialogue is cheesy. I really enjoyed heavy rain and expected something of the same vein but this was a big disappointment.
Great characters, good story! and... the worst fucking QTE mechanics you could ever experience!! . (Thank God they didn't use it in Detroit).
It also has some sort of co-op mode, so as a co-op games enjoyer, I just can't give it a negative review. :)
The story made me cry. Amazing story, amazing gameplay. 10/10
very fun. great controls. great gameplay. game gramphics great grameplay. great story especially where 80% of the game does not matter epic and awesome
9/10
Through a fully blind play-through except for the fact I knew Willem Dafoe was in the game, I was surprised to see Quantic Dream nail it down even so many years ago. Playing this after Detroit: Become Human was a bit of a step down but I had to understand this was literal years of work that was different.
Without going into spoilers, the game is a branching choices type of game, while it seems most of the choices still lead to the same destination, little things do matter. Mainly how you impact and affect other people and yourself (obviously). The game starts confusing, and a bit over the place on the classic regular mode, because you jump from a time when Jodie is 20 years old, down to just 9 years old. It changes ever so often but it's just enough time for you to understand what is fully happening each time, and how much that event shaped her as a whole.
My only gripes with the game is sometimes I felt lost, mainly the portions on playing as Aiden, and the combat with the QTE's of sliding your mouse in a specific direction felt awkward, as sometimes I truly couldn't understand why she wouldn't dodge or do a parry in a specific direction. While it seems like little things, it gets frustrating after quite some time.
This is a game I will definitely recommended to anyone who loves single-player story driven games.
Pretty good story, although I feel like it went too far off the rails somewhere around the midway point. I preferred the beats where she's struggling with her curse/gift, but the world in danger part was kind of meh imo. Either way, good game. I slept on these interactive story games for too long it seems like.
Would Highly reccommend this game if you like a good story based game, the controls are a bit yanky with keyboard so if you have a controller, that definetely works best.
游戏很棒,说两个个人感受的小缺点
- 交互方式有点难受,有时候按对了也会显示按错
- 中国人设定为反派实属白人的固有偏见,建议换成日本人符合实际情况
Beyond: Two Souls is a failure as both a story and as a game. For an interactive adventure game in which all you have to do is push buttons in the correct order, the story you are rewarded with is a mess of odd writing and poor dialogue. As someone who loved Detroit: Become Human, I can safely say Beyond: Two Souls is not worth getting, whether you're a fan of Interactive dramas or not, the story was boring. The characters were unlikeable and the QTE's are atrocious because you don't even know when the protagonist is going to move her body. Overall the game was a massive letdown for me that I just wanted it to end so that I can play something else.
Whole gameplay is focused on experiencing the story of Jodie which is really interesting. The game manages to make you care about her fate which is really hard to do. It has also replayability potential, but not great though.
Good game
Good writing
Good characters
Decent graphics
Phenomenal facial animation truly movie grade
Interesting to see how your choices affect the story and what others have decided/achieved
Very good story line, quantic dream creates some of the best story line driven games and is by far one of the best companies in this industry.
Beyond: Two Souls has great interactive storytelling and some of the best acting performances in a game that I've played. I was hooked from the start. While watching TV-series and movies I felt for the first time that I was comparing them to a game, and I wished to play this instead. It's the future of entertainment.
Loved it. Choice's actually matter. Characters have depth. Story was amazing. Ending left me with goosebumps. 10/10.
(+) Emotional and engaging story. I recommend playing on "Remixed" mode.
(+) Nice soundtrack.
(+) Multiple endings.
(-) Controls. Compared to Heavy Rain, the controls in this game are slightly better but still bad.
(-) In Heavy Rain, you can re-watch all unlocked endings separately in Chapter Select, but you can't do that in this game. The "Epilogue" only shows your last decision.
On my first playthrough, I saved all the characters, and on my second playthrough, I let them die. Now, if I want to re-watch the "Good" ending where everyone survives, I have to replay from "Homeless" to "Black Sun" chapter again.
a beautiful game with a great story, mechanics and graphics, i recommend a lot the game. loved it <3
I loved the Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit), I loved Heavy Rain, and I loved this game even though it's the weakest of the three simply because some levels are way too long with lots of walking.
if you enjoy David Cage games, you know what to expect.
Great story, QTEs, plot twists, and superb acting and drama.
plus, this game features the Green Goblin from 2002 Spider-Man :^)
There are literally "conflicting feelings" about this game for me.
The plot and story are absolutelly great. 6 stars from 5. :-)
But the controls are (at least for me) tragic.
- The less bad thing is that there are short deaf passages where you have to draw shapes with your mouse to make something happen. It feels a bit like just filler.
- Sometimes very stupid, user-unfriendly camera.
- The most tragic thing: often, specially in the more action-packed passages, it's a quick press of random keys. Basically there's not extra much logic Nothing for people with worse perception. If you don't get it right, the action in question just fails/goes badly. Which would be OK in an action game, shooter, etc, but doesn't fit a heavily plotted game.
So for the sake of the plot it's worth it, but the controls took away a big part of the experience for me.
good story line but even if you do press the right button on a controller you will have to switch to keyboard just to continue like fix this. please or use a different system to port to PC
Interesting game, but very strange in gameplay and in story wise, it's basically like stranger things but with a twist.
I played this game years ago in high school, and remembered most of the story so I didn't think it would hit as hard when I replayed it but holy cow this game is still as amazing as when I first played it. I am not ashamed to say I legitimately cried playing this game. The voice acting is superb and the characters are very well-written and the story is very moving.
I just wish I could out Ryan for being a creep and possibly shoot him in the face, but besides that 10/10 game.
Strapping a jet engine to a turtle for rooster fighting makes more sense than trying to play the story mode as "intended". Don't do that... Just play it like a normal person for a normal experience. I love Willem Dafoe.
It obly took 10 hours to playthrough, but it was worth it! Felt like much more. There is so much story and feelings. You need atleast 4 playthroughs to experience everything and it doesn't get repetitive, because it feels completely different to play doing all vs doing the least you can or playing mostly Aiden vs Jodie vs a mix between the two. The controls are simple, but also make sense and you stil need some experience to survive all fights unscathed. I bought this game on sale, but if you enjoy games like Detroit Become Human, this is worth the full price.
With a caveat. The game could not handle my Ultra wide screen. It chops the top and bottom portions of the screen off. This makes interacting with certain dots impossible. Tried installing a mod. That didn't work. Updating video drivers did nothing. Had to play in 1920x1080 windowed to get the full picture, which is unfortunate.
I really enjoyed Beyond: Two Souls.
One of the coolest features is that you can play in co-op mode. I played with my girlfriend, and we had an amazing time immersing ourselves in the roles of Aiden and Jodie. The story is unique and truly engaging, and the graphics are top-notch.
Overall, we’re having a great time with this game. Highly recommend it to everyone!
As I expect from Quantic Dream, the story in this game was masterful, fresh, engaging and unique. There were a couple small areas that felt a little jet lag but overall well told. This game bounces you all over the place through different environments and through the life of Jodie the main character. Lots of choices that play big roles in altering the story along the way. This one is well worth your time and stands up to the ratings others have given. The one thing I personally had struggle with in this title is what would be the directional movements. There would be action sequences that you don't get arrow move key indicators for and instead, have to go by the movement of Jodie's body to know which direction to key-press. My only problem was 30% of the time I couldn't figure out if Jodie was moving in for a block or moving out for a dodge and would get missed key presses for that lack of judgement. Perhaps a piece of the game that helps shape the story, however I found it annoying. It is not something you were drastically punished for, but had to replay a a couple "sections" of a couple action sequences based on this and that kinda kills the immersion a bit. I played this game with a controller. A couple times my character was directionaly challenged during exploratory parts, but other than that i had zero issues. In all 8/10 game. Worth it. Buy it. Play it.
Peak game I don't even like paranormal things but this game makes me forgot that I don't like them I recommend playing this because this game isn't like any other game it has its unique style try it and you well see...
Story - 10/10
Gameplay - 10/10
Graphics - 8/10
Highly recommend
Such an amazing story game. Incredibly raw and emotional. Although fiction, it still incorporates many real life situations that happen. This game really connects the player to Jodie and tunes into her complicated feelings and things throughout her life. One of my favorite games of all time for sure.
Pros:
The acting was great!
Elliot Page is a global treasure!
I will say this was a fun ride, and probably still worth the play through despite the cons below.
Cons:
The quick time events controls were very poorly thought out. There are lots of times when the white action dot will be on the far right side of the screen but you need to press down or up to activate it. Or there are action sequences that don't follow the rules. For example they tell you to continue the motion of Jodie in QTEs there is an action scene where Jodi is jumping up to then kick someone left but the motion she is currently in is up so you should press up based on the stated instructions but the game wants you to input left so I recommend playing in the easier mode because it actually shows you the input it wants.
The game tries way too hard to force you into a romance with an objectively terrible partner Ryan. He is a complete jerk that uses you and then when you call him on his crap he still confess his love for you before ever even apologizing and then even if you've rejected him at every turn he still forces a kiss on you
You'll need to have your plot hole blinders on super well for this game. Maybe even get a plot hole blind fold. I thought this was supposed be written by someone that knows how to write narratives but I find that claim dubious. It's like a roller coaster, fun to ride but it doesn't get you anywhere productive in a way that makes sense. Aidens powers are laughably inconsistent. In one scene he heals a gunshot wound completely and in the next can't fix a sprained ankle. At one point he blocks multiple surprise gunshots after preventing you from taking any harm in a fiery crash but literally not 10 minutes later can't block a single bullet that is clearly coming. At one point Aiden is able to operate as normal while Jodie is sleeping and unconscious but later randomly all of a sudden Jodie's mental state now affects how powerful Aiden is.
I haven't finished it yet, but for a 12 year old game, I must say i'm THOROUGHLY impressed with the graphics, my only complaint is that the mouse quick-time actions seem dodgy and unresponsive.
I highly recommend Beyond: Two Souls! The main thing that keeps you on the hook is the story, obviously, and the connection between the entity and Jodie. To know the rest, you'll have to play the game, but it's full of mystery, romance, betrayal, and an emotional rollercoaster. You'll cry, get angry, and feel all sorts of emotions throughout the journey. For me, it's a solid 10/10 for the story and the experience.
That said, the controls are a bit of a downside. I'd prefer a full third-person perspective rather than the fixed camera or whatever type of control setup this game has. But other than that, it’s an incredible ride!
4.2/5 stars.
Great game, magnificent story. A new experience.
First of all, I have played this game in duo mode with my boyfriend, so this review is regarding DUO Mode and both of our opinions.
You can play with anyone you want using Steam Remote play. Only one person needs to own the game.
Pros:
Gameplay
The storyline is non linear, the idea of a non linear story did not really appeal to us in the beginning. But as we played through the game, it made more sense to be this way because Adult and Child Jodie have very different types of gameplay.
Child Jodie is more decision based and it unravels more of the plot of the story and Jodie and Aiden's past. You have more freedom to interact with the environment with Aiden. Even though Jodie gave hints to Aiden on what to do, Aiden was free to choose any option available.
Adult Jodie is more action based gameplay and shows how Jodie grew up with Aiden and becoming a team. Fast paced gameplay, if you happen to fail an action, it would affect the outcome of the story, not significantly, but enough to make you more alert throughout the game.
For players who decide to play this game in duo mode, there is an option to adjust the difficulty of the gameplay separately.
Plot and Characters
The overall story was very entertaining to play. The game features 5 main different endings. Personally, we felt that the one true/good ending was the ending where we chose life and chose Ryan. Nonetheless each player can obviously choose whichever ending they feel like.
The characters had realistic emotions and personalities making you feel more sympathetic towards them.
Cons
Keep in mind this game was originally released in 2013, so a lot of standards have changed.
Although it is a decision-based game, we felt like there were not many opportunities to make a decision that would truly impact the story, excluding the ending of course. There was not really a moment in the story that had us to the edge of our seats or an extremely difficult/stressful choice that we had to make.
Because this game was initially meant to be played on console, controlling the characters with the keyboard sometimes felt a bit clunky (as expected). Using a controller provides the best experience.
Conclusion
Overall the game is worth playing if you like the genre of decision-based story games. We highly recommend to play this game with a friend/partner.
this is an absolute masterpiece. the developers did a great job story-wise, along with the high graphics. i must admit that this is one of the very few games whereby your choices will really determine how the story goes. however, i do have some issues regarding the controls along the way and it seems that other players face the same problem. other than that, i have no complains. i highly recommend this game to those who are casual gamers, simply by the fact that it is a story game.
Very Unique story with an interesting set of characters. Willem Dafoe and Elliot Page work well together in this game, and had a very cool ending. The only downside I'd say about this game is that the controls are so CLUNKY, Very 2013. 7/10
--Only-- reason this "game" gets a recommendation from me is for story really. It is more of a story than a game. If someone wanted to save their money and watch any number of youtube play throughs others have done they can enjoy the story similarly.... and save themselves the most frustrating part to this "game" (read on).
The biggest downside to this "game" is the absolutely, completely, horrible game play controls and camera angle issues that plague it. Just garbage. It is embarrassingly bad. I literally just suffered through that just to try to enjoy the story.
If you really want to play the game though, wait until it is practically a checkout aisle, bargain bin price.
Fighting scenes with Jodie can be challenging (especially guessing which way she intends to move) and the original order of events is really confusing. Besides this the story is really extensive and I like the fact that every small choice matters.
best game ive played in a long time i cant believe i missed this game. the story is very well put together its a gamer where it keeps grabbing your attention. the character you can really connect with and feel the emotion with in the story as you play hands down a 10/10
Beyond: Two Souls is a narrative-driven game that offers a unique blend of emotional storytelling and interactive gameplay, but like any ambitious project, it has its highs and lows. Let’s dive into the key aspects of the game:
1. Elliot Page’s Performance
One of the standout elements of Beyond: Two Souls is the remarkable performance by Elliot Page, who plays the protagonist, Jodie Holmes. Page brings depth and complexity to Jodie, capturing the emotional rollercoaster of a young woman struggling with the supernatural force that binds her to another realm. From the quiet, contemplative moments to the intense, action-packed sequences, Page’s performance is consistently compelling and elevates the narrative in ways that make Jodie feel like a fully realized character. The motion capture work done here is also top-notch, making the facial expressions and body language feel natural and immersive.
2. The Side Characters
While Jodie’s story takes center stage, the side characters are equally well-executed, each bringing something unique to the table. Whether it’s the mysterious and supportive mentor, Nathan Dawkins (played by Willem Dafoe), or the other colorful characters that cross Jodie’s path, they all have their moments to shine. These characters feel fleshed out and have enough depth to make their interactions with Jodie meaningful. It’s refreshing to see side characters treated with care, and their influence on the story is often substantial, helping to create a well-rounded experience.
3. Awkward Camera Movement in Tight Spaces
Unfortunately, not everything is smooth sailing. One of the game's major flaws lies in the camera movement, especially when navigating tight corridors or enclosed spaces. The awkward, sometimes jerky camera angles can make it difficult to get a sense of your surroundings, and it’s easy to get disoriented or frustrated. This is especially noticeable in more confined areas where the game struggles to maintain fluidity in controlling both the character and the view, which can break the immersion. A bit more refinement in this area would have gone a long way toward making the game feel more polished.
4. Predictable Story
The story is undeniably interesting, offering a mix of supernatural mystery, action, and emotional exploration. However, as compelling as the journey is, it doesn’t really throw any major curveballs that would leave players on the edge of their seats. The twists are few and far between, and as the story unfolds, it begins to feel increasingly predictable. While the narrative remains engaging throughout, it doesn’t quite live up to the level of unpredictability that you might expect from a game of this caliber. The absence of those truly shocking moments makes the overall experience feel more linear than it perhaps should have been.
Conclusion
Beyond: Two Souls is a game with great potential, largely propelled by a stunning performance from Elliot Page and memorable side characters. The story, while interesting, could have used a bit more unpredictability to keep it from becoming too foreseeable. The awkward camera movement is a noticeable flaw that can detract from the experience, but it doesn’t completely ruin the enjoyment. Overall, if you’re a fan of narrative-driven games, Beyond: Two Souls is worth experiencing, even if it’s not quite as groundbreaking as it sets out to be.
