really great game idk why i waited so long to play it
It’s really hard to write this review since there’s a lot of positive sentiment around this game but it’s even harder for me to justify recommending this game to someone who’s never played it before.
The story is only good in the first and final episodes. I think the story loses itself in the middle by becoming uninteresting. Comparing it to other Telltale games, this one is very barebones. It doesn’t compare your choices to other players’ choices at the end of each episode just like every other Telltale game does. The performance has a few minor setbacks. It doesn’t offer fullscreen borderless and you have to disable v-sync in Nvidia control panel (or in your AMD/Intel equivalent) to run the game with unlimited FPS. Audio quality isn’t the best either especially for dialogue at times which was a missed opportunity since Telltale had a great voice actor talent lineup for this game.
Other than the great voice acting, there were a few other positives that stood out for me. Telltale and Gearbox worked well together to integrate that Borderlands level humour which I think hit well and never felt cringy or forced. I really enjoyed the unique gameplay offered in the final episode. I don’t want to spoil it but if you play it you’ll see what I mean. I certainly wish the game’s final episode played like it did throughout the entire game because I would’ve been more engaged.
The opening credits of each episode are cinema
An exhilarating, heartwarming and intense adventure set in the Borderlands universe. I can't lay much more praise onto the game than everyone else already has, I learned a lot about friendship, loyalty, sacrifice, and corporate politics. Highly recommended for any Borderlands fan or anyone in the mood for a high-octane, heartfelt Sci-Fi adventure, some people do not like QTE type games but this is such a spectacular standout, similar to the first season of TellTale Walking Dead. You can't miss this one! I dare you to play through this and tell me you didn't love at least a few of the characters, and it all gets wrapped up with an intensely satisfying conclusion that does not disappoint.
I just finished the game, and it was pretty amazing. I'm new to the telltale games, but I got it because I liked Borderlands. The voice acting and story were great. I loved going through it all, and couldn't wait to go to the next episode/chapter.
I wish the people who worked on/wrote the story for this game can work on the mainline stories for the Borderlands franchise. It would really take the series/franchise to a whole new level. The mainline games already have a really fun looter-shooter combat, graphics, and a fun cast of characters. Only thing that the mainline games, except for Borderlands 2, are missing is a good story. Taking the writing, tone, pacing, and direction from this Tales from the Borderlands game can really round out the franchise.
I really loved this game, and loved Rhys and Fiona as playable characters. I know Rhys was showcased in Borderlands 3, but it wasn't done justice. The Rhys from this game feels rounded out/better. I hope to see Fiona in future Borderlands games, and hope they do her character justice.
Would definitely play this game again in the future.
Easily the best story in the Borderlands franchise and another classic from Telltale, Tales from the Borderlands is equally hysterical, heartbreaking and heartwarming, with a slew of zany characters and absolutely bonkers moments that show just how incredible the Borderlands series can be. Not to mention, this is a masterpiece of sci-fi storytelling that proves robotic characters are (more often than not) some of the most human characters ever.
Great story with hilarious dialogue and characters you can't help but root for! Catch a riiiiiideee!
I quiet liked the story.
But the game suffers from visual glitches sometimes and graphics could definitely be better.
I don't know how I feel exactly about the interactiveness of this game.
10 Hours of a fantastic story featuring lots of familiar characters and lore from the main games. Truly a gem! 100% Worth the purchase!
Tales from the Borderlands is a hilarious, story-driven adventure that captures the chaotic charm of the Borderlands universe. With witty dialogue, memorable characters, and meaningful choices, it’s a wild ride from start to finish. Fans of the series and newcomers alike will find plenty to love.
Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
I think someone got this for me ages ago as an intro to Borderlands. I've never played any Borderlands games, but this sat in my library and I had to check it off eventually.
I had no clue what I expected, I guess I thought this would be an RPG since I didn't really look into the store much. It's of course more of an interactive visual novel.
I'd rate my enjoyment at 3/5. I think I'm not the target audience for the worldbuilding, humor or really the visual style. BUT I can appreciate the game and story. It's objectively pretty good and probably lands well if the premise appeals to you.
There were moments I really was frustrated about (some pointless walking around and clicking the game makes you do, pointlessly long monologues, etc). There were also some great ones, in particular action scenes, and the final mech fight was awesome. I think it really picked up in the last 2 episodes, getting way more serious and interesting.
At first, after playing B2 and B3, I was a little thrown off that the game was mainly QTE based. I quickly got hooked on the story and writing, making the game extremely enjoyable – far better than the crappy movie. However, since I played Borderlands 3 before this game, I need to downgrade my positive review of B3 due to Fiona and Sasha being excluded (they better be in B4!). The fact that Fiona is voiced by Laura Bailey (Skyrim’s Serana) makes this a solid 10/10 for me.
A little dated and didnt find it as incredible as others, but still pretty good.
Man, this game is so peak. If you want 10 hours of great story and even better characters than its worth the $20.
I cried way more than I expected myself to, and nearly pissed myself laughing just as much. Highly recommend if you are a Borderlands fan!
It was an interesting experience with a good story. I did not like one of the main characters at all, and story seemed stretched sometimes. Otherwise, I advise it.
you have to play/know the plot of borderlands 2 to appreciate this game.
this and walking dead season 1 are tied for my favorite telltale game. this one has an amazing sense of the source material, great story, great voice acting, and good humor. the only real letdown are the gameplay elements, but thankfully they are short and you get back to the story quickly.
highly recommend this title to pretty much everyone.
I think back to this game every so often, when I see it in my library, when I see or hear about another borderlands game, and a wistful feeling washes over me. It astounds me that this game is so much funnier, engaging, entertaining, and intriguing than its counterparts in the series. This game makes me mourn a Borderlands we never got, a series with fascinating lore, beloved characters, genuinely funny and timeless humor. This is the best game in the series.
My recommendation comes with a huge caveat. The game requires understanding of borderlands 1 and 2 (though mostly 2). It *will* negatively impact your enjoyment of those games by being wittier and more endearing. But it'll make Borderlands 3 hurt even more. If, for some reason, you're reading this review as a borderlands fan who's curious about this game... take that into consideration. Consider if you can handle a glimpse into a world where Borderlands is consistently, often laugh-out-loud funny. A world where you can care about a character in Borderlands without feeling embarrassed or liking what they *could* have been.
I'm just being dramatic lmao. It's a good game that's a breath of fresh air in the often irritating Borderlands series. It appeals specifically to fans who want to be invested in the world and its characters, even if Borderlands 3 retroactively sullies a lot of it. It's not a great starting point for series newcomers because of its reliance on knowledge from the previous two games.
I really enjoyed this game and still held up to the first time that I played this a while/years ago back when played this on a console, even with some of my mistakes of choosing what dialogue to pick though out the game play.
Hella nice story and humor! And I havent even played the other borderland games.
They may have done Rhys dirty in later games, but he's the shining star in this one!
Consistently funny, smart and engaging, Tales from the Borderlands is some of the finest Telltale ever made. If you're familiar with the Telltale formula and enjoy Borderlands and it's quirky humor, this is a game for you.
i adore this game - good humour fun story and i love that handsome jack got brought back, hes my fave
Amazing game honestly, however extremely bold of 2K to make this game vital to learning the story for BL2: Fight for Sanctuary and BL3, because if this game flopped like New Tales a lot of people wouldn't have understood the situation.
bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro bro
Character movement could've been smoother in the cut scenes but overall great game. Although at the same time, the way they move adds "character" to the game itself.
The dialogue in Tales from the Borderlands is sharper than my reflexes, and every decision feels as serious as a shootout… except I spend more time laughing than worrying! It’s like watching an action movie on acid, where every choice is an adventure or sometimes a hilarious disaster. With sarcastic robots, charming con artists, and iconic one-liners, I’m totally hooked and can’t get enough !
This game is one of the reasons why I LOVE the writing behind Handsome Jack. In this game, he has serious depth, he starts off as a good guy/buddy and makes you think he is truly on your side and like true Handsome Jack style, he stabs you in the back only for everything to come crashing down on and around him then after that happens, that's when you see him truly become an amazingly written (and voiced) character. This game, as I saw in another review (and when I saw it put into words, it made a lot of sense), is not about winning or about heroics: it's about making the wrong choice over and over again until you fumble into an okay outcome. Telltale Games does justice for the Borderlands saga and helps make Handsome Jack a more amazingly written bad guy.

This is the best piece of Borderlands Media I have ever consumed, and I played all of the mainline games, I'm ashamed to have taken so long to play it.
The Story itself was pretty good with nice lore dump, however it feels a little slow to play so if you don't have the patience to watch a movie that changes with your choice then this isn't for you. It also drags out at over 10 hours to complete. its alright but for $30 it might be best to wait to get on sale in my opinion.
Funny, engaging story, and surprising twists and turns. Peak Telltale experience!
As a Telltale fan, I really enjoyed Tales from the Borderlands. The story is engaging, and I highly recommend it!
As the game makes it very clear in an early episode: The entire story is a series of making really bad choices. The first 3 episodes were comical/humorous and had some interesting sections. Had fun playing them.
Then you reach episodes 4/5 and its takes a nose dive into depression/frustration and hopelessness and the "fun" factor drops to -10. There is clear change in the tone/dialogue and mannerisms are far too serious for a game. You decide if you want to go down this rabbit hole. Episodes 1-3 have a rating around 8/10. Episodes 4-5 have a rating of 2/10.
This is one of my favorite game stories I've ever experienced. I seriously enjoyed this story as much as RDR2 and Witcher 3.
The story is well written, no character is annoying and I loved to see them all interact with eachother. This game should be adapted into a movie or a series, I'd absolutely watch that.
Only the graphics could be higher quality, but you get used to it after a short while. Also the QTEs are little annoying, but not too bad.
It's absolutely a great game, it takes around 10h to beat, achievements are gained by completing the story chapters so you automatically 100% the game. Also no collectibles or stuff like that - i like that because you get to just enjoy the story and not worry about missing something.
You should play after BL2 and BL-TPS, but before the BL2 DLC Fight for Sanctuary to have the best experience.
one of the best games i enjoyed and always love finger gun fight scene
One of the best TellTale, "point and click" adventure games I have ever played. A delight for Borderlands fans, but able to be played by anyone, no need to have played the series, start fresh and enjoy@
literally unplayable, constant stuttering and freezing despite (according to steam's displayed fps) reaching 200+ fps
Joe from family guy doesn't give you a promotion so you ressurect space hitler, murder thousands of people, and realize that this was the last truly great story in this franchise
It's fun and it kept me engaged for the runtime. There are betters TT games out it's still decent!
It's a classic TellTale Game, I didn't know much about Borderlands, but this game piqued my interest. If you're into TTG's The Walking Dead and like Borderlands, then this is the game for you.
If you're looking for a linear game with a compelling cast and fun dynamic for casual fans, then this is right up your street.
From all the Borderlands games I've played (haven't played the 3rd yet, and I don't intend to play the "New Tales" one), I can safely say that this is the best arc of the franchise that I've played so far!
At first, I was like "Ok, it's a story about two distinct characters telling their own adventure, sure." and I wasn't feeling any attachment until things got more in-depth and we got to know more about these characters and those around them. We have choices to make, whether they are dialogues or actions, and it's also recommended to explore a bit the surroundings (look, touch, loot, scan, stuff like that). Rhys and Fiona's relationships with other characters will matter, and will affect the way they see them, and what it might lead into the story. We get to see some returning characters as well (Scooter, Janey, Zer0, Athena, Mordecai, and Brick, among a few others - one of them will even depend on your choices at the end).
This game tricks you sometimes, you get to the point sometimes you don't know if you should trust X character or not, plus it has some plot twists, unexpected outcomes, and roller coasters. A roller coaster of emotions in a Borderlands game? Yes! This one. I never thought I'd get emotional and excited with a Borderlands game ever, yet here I am, Telltale didn't disappoint! The more you play, the more you get invested.
Of course, I have to mention Laura Bailey's performance, - one of my favorite voice actresses in the gaming industry, - she made a phenomenal job as Fiona! The other voice actors did great too, obviously! There are a few names I already knew, such as Troy Baker as Rhys, Dave Fennoy as Finch (I know him from the roles he played in RWBY - Pietro and Dr. Merlot), Nolan North as August, Susan Silo as Vallory (yes, Yin from Legend of Korra), Ashley Johnson as Gortys (she voiced Pike from Legend of Vox Machina! And Ellie from TLOU too), and Erin Yvette as Sasha (voiced Io from Paladins).
The choice of songs on each episode is amazing! And the credits song is definitely my favorite of the soundtrack.
Summing it up, the best Borderlands I've played when it comes to story. If you want to know what happened after this arc, the DLC "Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary" from Borderlands 2 is a sequel!
The tribute they did to Scooter in Tales from Borderlands and in the Borderlands 2 DLC was more than deserved. Catch-a-riiiiiiide!

Hard to believe it's been 10ish years since this released? I beat it way back then. I miss the Telltale games and it would have been amazing to get another Tales from the borderlands game. The game is an interactive novel for those that have never played it. It's a fun story that I feel really legitimised the story world of Borderlands. Coming off the heels of a disaster movie, this is an example of how you could make a movie or tv series in the universe work.
**Finger guns: pewpewpew**
I had an enjoyable time playing another game from the Borderlands series. I encountered 2 bugs in my playtime which were in episode 3 and another in episode 5 but they weren't that bad and going back to the main menu would fix them. A few things that bothered me were the saves I wish I could make some of my own or skip past dialogue because when I wanted to reset in Episode 5 I had to redo 5-8 minutes worth of dialogue which was kinda annoying. Other than my Complaints I really enjoyed this and am glad its Cannon to the over all story!
An on-rails experience whose gameplay loop consists of several minutes of dialogue followed by a quicktime event. Only get it if you want a Borderlands story.
Great game. I highly recommend playing with an X-Box style controller. I'm playing with mouse and keyboard now and it is very obvious that it was not optimized for that type of play-style. The quick-time events can be very difficult when having to switch between arrow keys, WASD and the mouse. I wish I had three hands.
This game was really fun I enjoyed the Visuals, Characters are really cool I do like them, the Gameplay is fun and gives off a variety of 2 characters to play as which I do like Variety but yeah the game is overall fun and has a really good Story my only complaint is that Telltale shut down their servers so no choice showings but this is still a fun game.
MAN THIS GAME IS GOOD i cant belive im saying this but i think this is better then the walking dead game this game is so fucking good man too bad they DID NOT MAKE A SEASONE 2 NO NO NO THEY DIDNT I SWEAR THEY DID NOT FUCKING MAKE IT I FUCKING HATE GEARBOX I AM SORRY BUT THEY you know what nah ill talk about it when i finish new tales from the borderlands anyway fonominal game my new fav borderlands game (10/10)
What The "New" Tales of the Borderlands should have, this game is simply a masterpiece it would slightly make more sense if you played the other borderlands (but in my opinion) you don't really need to it's a mix of comedic/actiony story with smart choice making that can effect the ending/relationships between characters, played it 3 times and every new play through is such a blast 10/10.
Tales from the Borderlands is a standout title in the expansive Borderlands universe, brought to life by Telltale Games. This episodic graphic adventure game diverges from the main series' first-person shooter format, opting instead for a narrative-driven approach that leans heavily on humor, character development, and player choice.
Set in the same chaotic, post-apocalyptic world of Pandora, Tales from the Borderlands introduces players to a fresh cast of characters while retaining the series' signature irreverence and wit. The game unfolds through the perspectives of two protagonists: Rhys, a corporate drone with dreams of grandeur, and Fiona, a con artist with a knack for survival. Their stories intertwine in a complex narrative that blends elements of heist drama and buddy comedy, offering a rich, engaging experience.
The game excels in its writing and character interactions. Telltale's hallmark choice-based gameplay allows players to shape the story through decisions that feel consequential, although the overarching narrative remains largely linear. The dialogue is sharp and often hilarious, with moments of genuine emotional depth that ground the game's more zany elements. The voice acting is exceptional, with standout performances that breathe life into the diverse cast of characters.
Graphically, Tales from the Borderlands maintains the cel-shaded art style of its predecessors, creating a visually distinctive experience that complements its comic book-like narrative. The animation is fluid, and the visual gags are abundant, enhancing the game's comedic tone.
However, the episodic structure means that the pacing can sometimes feel uneven, with certain chapters dragging compared to others. The game’s reliance on dialogue and decision-making over action may not appeal to players looking for more intense gameplay.
Overall, Tales from the Borderlands is a delightful diversion from the main Borderlands series. Its strength lies in its character-driven storytelling and humor, making it a must-play for fans of the franchise and a great entry point for newcomers interested in exploring the Borderlands universe in a new way.
One of the first choose your own story games I've played and honestly for me it was pretty meh. I'd say get it if it's on sale or you like these types of games but I was sort of unimpressed. 6/10
