I bought this back in Christmas 2018 and gave copies to friends, for the only reason the intro movie's narrator sounded... kinda well, I gotta be honest, he sounded kinda thick. Nobody talks like that, normally. So I was like, "I'm in!" I'm a creature of whimsy, I have weird ideas.
And having bought copies for friends and myself, I never touched it for years. Literally years. It's 2024, it's been over five years since I bought it. I finally gave it a go.
But there's one thing you need to know: This game's been dead since late 2020. The devs have moved on, this isn't early access, it's dead access. Full stop. If I sell you on this game, get it on sale. I mean, it's not that good anyway, it's a beer-and-pizza game, it'll fill you and amuse a few friends for some hours, but it's not going to change the world of gaming. It's what the kids these days would call "mid". The developers effed off for crypto nonsense and metaverse-I-don't-know-what according to the Steam forums, so... don't hold your breath for a return after three-and-half years absence.
So! The game closest to it that I've played is Dungeons of Sundaria. If you like what this game does, you have to get DoS. It's being updated, you've got meaningful character classes and specialties. But comparisons to it aren't useful to most folk, since it's also an indie-AF game. So how about this: "first-person Diabloid."
You, and optionally a few friends, are going to sack procedurally-generated dungeons. You'll dodge fireballs in realtime, whap monsters, gain XP, find better gear, and get level ups. I mean, that's basically ever ARPG since Diablo 1. The difference here is it's all in first person.
Making it FPS is another matter, though. The maps are orthagonally developed (so everthing is always at right angles) and made out of a handful of elements so there's an instant sameyness about it. Getting disoriented can happen quickly, even with a good sense of navigation. Navigating is done largely by seeing which doors and chests are already opened, what loot you left on the floor (there's no selling), what rooms are emptied of monsters. In a pinch, you can get consumable "compass" items that point you in the right direction. You'll get those as long as you remember to pop open enough cabinets and smack enough tombstones/casks/clumps of pottery/other random furniture objects.
Item durability has been some kind of busywork thing in most games, and it's exceptionally so here. You'll find widgets you can use to fix your stuff as you go along. It hasn't been an issue as low-level item churn has replaced items faster than they broke. Maybe that'll change later. Eh, who knows?
The game's bumpf brags about how you can "play it your way!" but seriously, no. There's your magic slingin', arrow-huckin', and face-bashing types of weapons and armour, and there's one stat that improves each. Weapons have minimum stat requirements, and if you're looking to max your damage you'll want to focus. The melee class has heavier armour but no range options, but the armour isn't that much heavier, so staying in your lane isn't debilitating. Since every attack consumes the same (quickly recharging) "willpower" meter, there little point to multi-classing.
The AI is pretty middling, honestly. Many monsters have difficulties navigating through doors, and some of them won't react if you throw splash damage barrages through the door and constantly wing them. Success with this mage I'm playing revolves around cheese: luring enemies through doors so they bunch up and I can AoE them, sticking close to walls so homing missiles might hit the wall instead of me, and just patiently hitting stuff from afar. The vast majority of enemies are melee, so they uselessly charge into my fire and die.
I've been through two dungeon zones, so far, complete with their "challenges", which are limited-area fights where monsters appear close by. The difficulty of all of this is based entirely on luck in the form of kit you find. By the end of the second dungeon, things were taking twenty hits in extreme cases and could take 50% of my HP off in a lucky hit. Then a lucky loot drop was letting me shrug off multiple blows and one-shot most everything.
I'll play it through later with my wife, who likes to bash things, and we'll see how it goes. I expect, based on my progress in the game, that there's about 15 hours of content maybe, maybe 20 if you really dawdle and scrub every dungeon clean. It'll be a mild palate cleanser.
If you've got a few buddies and you're waiting for a big coop game to appear, this will tide you over in the interim. It's not great, but it doesn't have to be if you can get a copy for a tenner.
I most definitely recommend this game!!! A hidden gem for those who like dungeon crawling with good soundtrack. If you're a bloody occult-lover, don't think twice. Hope to see further updates! Huge thanks for all the amazing guys at ANIMVS.
Fun game if you don't expect it to be a role-playing game. It is more like a modern version of the classic Rogue dungeon game. Your goal is to explore several randomly generated dungeons, level up, get better gear, and find keys that let you through locked doors to new areas to explore. Beyond that, there are no deep meaningful quests (at least not yet). Like Rogue, it is about navigating a maze and COMBAT! The combat system is good with 3 different specializations based on stats (see below). Reading the reviews I feel like it has gotten a bad wrap because people expected it to be like World of WarCraft and it just isn't intended to be that. It is also an early access game, which unfortunately for some reason certain people expect to be all but complete. I don't know how it was before, but right now it seems stable and very playable. That said, I expect the developers will build on this base as time goes on.
So far I've played for about 10 hours and made it to level 14. I don't think I've even scratched the surface of the maps as I'm still on the first of 5 or so regions you can see from your starting point.
Here's what I've learned about the classes so far.
Right now I prefer archery (dexterity) which includes bows, crossbows, spears, etc. These weapons seem to trade range for damage. I also take some melee (strength) so I can bash enemies with swords and clubs when they get close, but I may end up dropping that so I can gain dex faster to get access to better weapons. Mages (intelligence) have several types of magic attacks that seem to trade speed for damage. Their playstyle seems similar to the archer, but it has the interesting twist of the different magic attacks working differently. For instance, blasts from physical attacks will ricochet around.
If you like a classic dungeon crawl, for $20 bucks it is well worth spending some time on.
Computer generated nonsense. Much magic...tanking.... fun but not too high tech.
It's one of those games that sucks and is also good and you're finding yourself playing it and getting into it.
It's like a first person diablo 1. it's not bad. If this is what you're looking for.
You're in control of the block, willpower will give you the ability to fight about with endurance, a perfect block gives you willpower. Really not bad.
Tasty jank (as of version 0.33), reminds me of Dungeons and Darkness a lot. Not sure if it's worth $20 in its current state but it's really fun, at least so far (played 2hrs now).
Probably the biggest thing I didn't expect was that its atmosphere is surprisingly scary. It's dark A.F.; enemies are around every corner and they're pretty well-detailed monsters. Encountering the first mimic gave me more of a jumpscare than I've ever experienced in any non-horror game. Combat and other systems are pretty simple and straightforward for now, so you can just turn your brain off and go dungeoning for a while. Although, you might need to make a mental map of each dungeon, since the game doesn't make a map for you.
Good game, but what REALLY IMPRESSES ME is looking at the update schedule. You can clearly see how this game is continually upgraded all the time. If its good now, its only going to get better. But right now---totally worth it.
Not worth for 20 dollars, has good potential and a good idea but isn't quite a experience right now. Possibly sound cues, music cues, sound effect changes, smoother animations and AI changes could make this work until further updates give the game some depth. Until then i spent most of the time lost then bored. Love the idea but not worth the money.
Got some real good hours of fun, specially in multiplayer mode. I encountered some bugs through out the game, but seldom a major problems that prevents the flow of the experience. Overall, the game is in a really good shape for an early access product and most important, the developers listen carefully to the community and are constantly updating it. Can't wait to see the final result!
Interesting game. For an EA it runs very smoothly and quickly. There are lots of weapons and armors to choose from. There isn't much to really complain about that would make sense since it's very EA. You cannot expect a super polished game this early in the development, but this is coming along faster and better than a lot of other EA's that I've played. The Devs are very responsive and quick. I would love to see how this turns out.
I can see where they are going with this but right now, janky is not a good enough description for this game. Right from the off, mouse movement seemed off but lowering the sensitivity somewhat smoothed some of that off.
Graphically it is unimpressive, combat is a little on the simple side, enemy AI is all about "see you and run straight for you", enemies spawn in right in front of you and plop in to being, sound of object drops seems straight up lifted from Diablo.....disappointing would be another word.
And the kicker is its a 22GB install size. Yes, that's right, 22GB. I'm guessing a ton of textures that are uncompressed as there is nothing else that I can see that would come close to justifying that, but its all wrapped up in a single .pak file and I can't even be bothered to tinker with that. To put it in perspective, the recently release Call of Chthulhu is 13GB.
I really appeciate alpha games and I'm fully aware of what I might be getting into when I sign on any dotted line with a purchase. I'm a big dungeon crawler fan and watched a few of "Deadman's" videos on YouTube before buying this game. (He'd been playing the game since release on steam). As mentioned by others in these reviews, its very, very early stage....but let me tell you they're on to something. If Gauntlet, Gauntlet Legends, Heretic, Hexxen, Diablo and a First Person RPG/Shooter got together and had a child; this would be their offspring. The simple fact its first person is a game changer; not to mention you can play with friends on the fly! The dungeons can be randomly generated and it's a complete loot fest. Well worth the few dollars it costs. (We've all spent more at the movies and had nothing to show for it the next day, I try to keep that in mind) The foundational graphics engine is solid enough to play as of now. They've revamped the music and a few other aesthetic dynamics. (Devs are very active and friendly) It does have glitches/bugs and needs more content but it's so early stage that the sky is the limit. I definitely see what they're trying to do here. :) If you're into mass looting, hack n' slash and fast upgrades while mobs sneak up behind you and try to lop your head off while you frantically try to aim and kill them then this is the game for you. It starts off slow so don't give up on it; takes some time to ramp up and see what it's worth. I bought it in the middle of the night and couldn't stop playing it. This could be the type of game that leads you to not going to work or skipping school. I have my friends playing it now and I don't want to play anything else at the moment. lol Great job guys. :) The major downfall of this game, due to how early stage it is, is the general lack of content. There are only a handful of levels to randomly generate at the moment. Hope this one works out though, make more content!!!
Oh man, this game is nice! Have fun killing and looting while you listen to some kickass music!
The graphics are gorgeous, with amazing light effects.
The game is in early access, so obviously, there may still have a few bugs. But the customer service is amazing, the devs always listen and are very quick in fixing any issue.
They continuously lanch patches to further improve performance and add more content.
Worth every penny!
EDIT: I was contacted by the devs and talked through some troubleshooting. That is some serious customer service right there!
They released a patch that fixed most of the problems I was having, as well as pointing out an issue with AVAST anti-virus (in case anyone else is running it). This is a dedicated team really looking to provide a quality product, and they completely have my support.
This is a great project and I'm excited to see where it goes. And the devs are very closely listening to all of the feedback, which is fantastic!
There is definitely lots of potential here. The comments so far are mostly positive, other than the expected bugs and glitches (which some people just have to complain about even in Early Access). Nothing that should deter you from trying out this fun little dungeon crawler that's even more fun with your friends! Multiplayer ftw.
Worth giving a try if you're looking for a nice loot fest dungeon crawler. One with constant updates and new features being added, at that.
Edit: As of this week (11/28) I was interviewed and brought onto the dev team at Animvs. Although an exciting opportunity, I wanted to very strongly point out this had nothing to do with my initial review of this product multiple weeks ago (which originally started out as a negative thumbs down!) I am proud and excited to be helping mold this project into something the community both wants and deserves. I will try to respond back to everyone that reaches out with questions.
This game is in great shape already, much better than average EA titles on Steam. Multiplayer still need some work on the animations sync, but it is fully playable. To be able to use the same character for single / multi full campaign is great! Can't wait for the upcoming levels.
A really awesome game to play with friends or even find your way out by your own hitting down the enemies. You can improve your game over time by increasing your skills, and also it has a great weapons diversity and the creation of the different ways of the Dungeons leaves more fun each match.. It's very easy to get into the game's mood and feel in every age of the Dungeons. Truly recommended ;)
Played a bit of it with two friends, love the game, love the idea but the stability is not good. I'm running a 1070 and i7 and am still having pretty bad frame drops, almost to unplayability. I appreciate your guys' work but please work on the frame problems before anything else!
Edit: As of 11/11/2018 The game has improved vastly performance wise. There are still some frame drops here and there in very enemy heavy areas but it is MUCH better than before. You can tell the team is listening to their fans and that is very rare nowadays. Keep up the optimizing process guys, you are doing great and this game is turning out very well!
This has some Real potential given time and effort are poured into it. i suggest u buy it early to help the dev so he can Polish the hell outa it and make it a fucking triple A game
Brazilian RPG/FPS game inspired on Hexen and Heretic.
A Teacher started study ocultism, when go to other world.
Played before i bought at Brasil Game Show,The game is very fun for playing with your friends or play alone.
This game is better than a lot of games and still in beta, also it's very challenging.
I recommend to buy it.
DO NOT buy this game it appears to be abandoned by the dev. Its a shame because for a long time the dev was active and new dungeons, monsters, and more were released. Issues were resolved, etc. Now since summer of 2020 there hasn't been an update and I think the last response from the dev was in November of 2020. Before that, the dev was active in the forums and responding to posts. He has disappeared and sadly it appears he has abandoned the game. A real shame as it has such great potential!
[BELOW is my original review when I got the game, but a lot has changed forcing me to change my review and recommendation.]
An action/RPG with lots of hack and slash fun. Played online with a friend and we had a good time. Currently the game is in EA with 3 dungeons (randomly designed each playthrough) a fairly large amount of equipment drops and a good mix of monsters with more coming by the time the game goes to release.
For an EA game I'm enjoying it and have witnessed very few issues. Once my friend and I were dumped back to windows as the game crashed, but that was one time only so far.
I picked this game up and a few others. I returned the others because they weren't ready for release at all, even as an EA title. Dungeon Crowley on the other hand was a welcomed EA release because ity fares very well so far. Good fun with more coming!
I'll do a more thorough review as the game nears final release.
The game is yes unpolished as it is but that will be fixed in time.I generally enjoyed my time playing the enemies where kinda low intellgence in AI aspects but when I got to the second dungeon I found it very hard to hit a wizard with a blade when he threw a shatter spell at me.If you dont know what a shatter spell is then you dont play DandD often. But to put it in simple terms a shatter spell destroys a weapon on contact and when your in a room filled with monsters losing your only defense is kinda bad.
Later Note-Figured out it wasn't a shatter spell but my weapon losing durability but god help you if they add something like that to this game.
