Pros
* Indie vibe to it with hand curated levels
* Camera angles change automatically to give some visual depth
* Automatic save points and reload without interrupting play too much
* Cheap $3 arcade game
Cons
* Even on easy its just bullet hell with more life refills, feels like a coin muncher arcade
* Can't remap keys
* Rather linear and repetitive, just bash keys as fast as possible to pass
* Got bored after 15 min, the over saturated visuals didn't help
* How does this take 9Gb of space?! Uninstalled
First few times i couldn't start a new game. I changed to Window Mode x720 resolution, started a game, then changed back to fullscreen x1440 with no problem
This game is the equivalent of repeatedly wrapping your foreskin over your nutts with the logic that it would be a fun and exciting exercise. I am sure there are people out there who could do that over and over but surely you need to spice it up a little. This game has 2 attack animations, both of which were stolen from the Karate Kid III movie. Not once in my life did I think I would see a machine-gun/shotgun/rocketlauncher wielding monsters in Norse Hell, its a fresh take for sure but one you would get and implement in this manner after snorting gravel off the side of the road.
You can be blind to play this game it's also very easy to play
Despite looking and sounding great, Hellheim is rather repetitive and very frustrating to play. You're moving from one arena battle to another during the whole game, with a limited amout of different enemies spawning out of thin air. Beating them is too often based on button mashing and luck instead of skill, and the one-hit-kill shotguns are very annoying.
Being able to deflect bullets by attacking them is a nice feature tho, and unlocking new runes is supposed to keep the gameplay fresh. Sadly, I only found the rune that delays time useful. The battles are so fast and hectic that I couldn't find any use for the other runes. Luckily, the game can be beaten little over two hours.
This said, it is obvious that the developers of Hellheim have plenty of great ideas and I hope they keep working on new games.
Buy is when it's on discount, but NOT for full price.
It's got a Hyperlight Drifter and FURI feel to it, with a decent story, great main character, and legitimate lore that sticks true to the tales of Norse mythology, taking place supposedly after the events of Ragnarok and Thor Odinson's death at the hands of Jormungandr the World Serpent.
Thor's powerhungry lust for glory leads him to corruption and he instills this bloodlust in the other dead denizens of Helheim, usurping the throne from Loki's sister Hel / Hela. Honestly, love the idea that Thor gets what's coming to him in this game! Never liked him much.
Combat is fast-paced and unforgiving, but clunky. Could be much better as there's TONS of potential.
However, the graphics are very....stock image. Most of these assets can be found just roaming around Unity sites. They were edited a bit and not bad visually actually. Great models on the boat for one in particular. Though, the animations are very lackluster. With polish, it can be a great game to rival FURI and Hyperlight.
As of right now, it feels severely unfinished, and should be advertised as "early access", in my opinion.
(This may be updated in the future should something change in the updates or game status.)
After completing the game in 2 hours my reacton was: "And this was on my wishlist? And I've even paid for it?!"
Not worth it :/
It's a Norse revenge story with a female character. Cut scene art and voice acting is serviceable. Levels become samey fast, but aren't ugly. Animations are off. They randomly cut off early and seem really jerky. Shooting minions just stand still and fire, banshees dash at you and has a AOE scream. At times they dash to you and immediately yell, when you dodge they dash back to you to attack again. This loop where it becomes very difficult to hit them without taking damage happens about 1/3 of the time. At melee range your attacks don't always deflect bullets. Knowing when it will deflect and when it won't can get frustrating. Dashing around is fun, but movement feels like butter sliding around on a plate. The game will also stutter sometimes, and needs optimization. Sometimes attacks go through the reflect aura. Notice I use "at times" or "not always". Game play feels inconsistent and it is difficult to get a groove. If controls get tightened up, this could be pretty fun. It's hard to recommend when there are better options out there. I normally like janky games, and I really want to like this game. Potential is here, but at this time I can't recommend it.
Simplistic combat. Minimal story. Mediocre controls. Overall a dull experience.
Enemies don't move, they're just turrets. You powers are useless because the base ability of deflecting bullets with your sword means you just run around swinging. No tactics.
It's a good first game. Not really a great game.
The ability to reflect bullets back at enemies is neato, but rather moot when I also have a dash and enemies are stationary gun turrets. The only times it becomes relevant is when the arena gets filled with so many enemies that you have to just SPAM that attack button. Runes also make the game a cakewalk on normal difficulty.
Music is a bit dissapointingly generic, mostly orchestral. A romp through norse legend is worthy of some power metal riffs at the very least.
Hel herself does not feel nearly as satisfying to control as she should. She swings her sword with all the weight of a wiffle ball bat, with stiff animations and zero follow-through on her momentum. The dash is actually the coolest part of controlling her, making me really feel like a supernatural being of death that dematerializes to reappear directly in front of hapless opponents. Paired with the time slowing rune, the game has the potential to be quite a nice power trip. However, Hel's poor animation tends to throw that off.
The aesthetic is cool but often wasted on huge arenas with very little of note in them. I like the idea of sci-fi norse mythos, and the norse mythos in general needs more love. Environmental design is passable, but a bit boring. All the rock hexagons get dull within 15 minutes, but all the norse iconography is nicely done, and the lava and such looks good. I really hope the developer(s?) puts more love and care into this game, because it's a really neat concept.
Last thing of note- the english translation is a LITTLE spotty in some places. I personally let this slide, but other people might not.
Won't refund, hoping for more developments on this, but definately a negative from me so far. Overall I give 5 reflected bullets out of a wierd glowy sword.
fun good indie game
Great things about this game:
- nice fast-paced feel
- IMO the gaming market really needs more "dash and slash" games like these
- isometric viewpoint but doesn't make bullets hard to see (something not many similar games achieve)
- well-balanced mob design, reload on the gunners is quite a witty gimmick
- runes are alright, could be more balanced but they're fun to play around with and that's the important thing
Problems:
- if you miss a rune you can't go back to retrieve it
- hitbox of the stomp attacks feels wonky, can't dash through them consistently
- the corners of the port levels have some odd pathing
- in the tutorial it says dash is Up Arrow, it's actually space
Really want to give this game a high score but I can't due to these bugs. Regardless, Helheim makes for a very fun, challenging game. And of course if things get patched I'll edit my review accordingly.
Final verdict: 7/10
Oh boy, this needs more time in the oven.
The animations are so stiff and limited it's sad to look at
The combat music is annoying and starts and stops abruptly when you start and leave combat, there is no fade in and fade out, it's silly
There is no limitation to the dash/dodge either in resources or cooldown so you move always by spamming it and you also spam the sword attack because it reflects bullets (which are flying everywhere all the time, it looks more like a bullet hell than an action game sometimes), so you are always either spamming one button or the other, my thumb does not want me to play it anymore after half an hour.
Enemy variety is anemic at best
It's cheap, so it's shortcomings might be forgivable for some people, in my case I have little time to play games and regardless of the monetary cost, it's not worth the time.
It needs a lot of polish and content, I can't recommend it when there are games like Furi out there
Cool game with interesting combat, what I don't like about it is the keyboard only thing they have going on. I have been killed more times because I dodged a little wrong than by the enemies. Please make mouse supported so we can dodge the way we want to. Other than that 9 / 10 . One more thing, this game get's loud if you are playing on a mechanical keyboard :-)
game is pretty fun, has bullethell like mechanics where you can either dodge or use your sword to attempt to parry the bullets away, you can find runes as you progress that are active abilites like slow timea reflect bubble etc.
shout out too the devs aswell for replying quickly to an issue i had and fixing it
