It was a lot shorter than I expected, but it did give the feel of Metroid on the NES and Metroid 2 on GameBoy.
So overall, pretty dang solid.
Honestly, this is a better Metroid game than Metroid II. I love the graphics! But why can't you copy your save file?
A must for Metroidvania fans, I think.
It's a cat metroidvania; what more could you ask for?
If that wasn't enough to convince you then the nostalgic 8-bit style (with unlock-able color pallets that you can swap between) that is visually and mechanically inspired by Metroid should do the trick. To put it simply: if you like the classic Metroid games, then you will like this game, which is just Metroid with polished controls, polished enemy AI, and a very cute protagonist.
just kinda boring. same applied to gunbrella. such amazing designs and concepts but such stale executions.
Extremely satisfying little metroidvania with a beautiful 1-bit art style. This game plays like a charm, every action (jumping, firing, dashing, etc.) feels incredibly good and that's not just thanks to good controls, but also incredibly detailed and rich animations and punchy sound design. The characters are cute and the history is one of those full of charm, secrets and turns. If you want a rewarding, short and fun experience, you can't go wrong with this little gem.
Gato Roboto might be my favourite metroidvainia its just so cuteee!!
It's really small taking around 2 hours to beat it for the first time but for one dollar??
thats basically stealing candy from a little kid
BUY THE GAME >:3
Bosses are damage sponges and there are difficulty spikes. The game hasa few ncethings about it, it really is older comparable to metroid and gameboy games.
Gato Roboto is a very basic Metroidvania that feels underwhelming in many aspects. The concept of a cat piloting armor is charming at first but ultimately serves as little more than a gimmick. Most of the gameplay revolves around the cat staying in the mech suit, with limited moments outside of it to navigate small spaces. This mechanic is comparable to Samus' morph ball but feels more cumbersome, as you must either return to your armor or find a new one at save points.
If you're new to the Metroidvania genre, Gato Roboto might provide some initial intrigue. However, for seasoned players, it lacks the depth, innovative mechanics, and compelling story that make other games in the genre so captivating. I'd recommend exploring alternatives with richer gameplay, settings, or narratives.
It took me around 3 hours to finish the game, but I must say that those 3 hours are worth the prize. I really enjoyed the game and I think that you should give it a try. 10/10.
not really worth 10 bucks but regularly goes on sale for a dollar and at that price its a perfectly fine filler game. really light, short metroidvania with a cute 1 bit artstyle
there are worse ways to spend a couple hours, its not an outstanding example of the genre but its competent and has a lot of charm, i dont really like when the cat dies though
Cat in Space!!! I found this game on Steam a while back by getting a coupon from the steam trading card system. It's a Metriod clone that has you playing a cat in a mech suit. It's a very simple concept that expands on Metriod level designs and combat. I like the black and white presentation, giving it an old game boy feeling. The game is clean and fun to play. The only thing that's annoying is that boss fights can be tricky to figure out ,but with enough time, it can be beaten. It's a very short game clocking under 3 hours, but enjoyable the whole ride. Give it a shot if u want to be a cat in space.
9/10
It's basically a short version of Guacamelee in 1-bit graphics.
You can tell that the devs made it with love but I hate to say it is mediocre at best. Art is excellent, gameplay and exploration is decent and story is just poor. There are also some annoying things like weird controls and unskippable dialogues everytime you fight a boss and keep dying. Bosses were good but I don't get the experience devs were trying to achieve. Some bosses exteremly easy and some extremely difficult (more than the final boss). Maybe more dev time and it would've been phenomenal. If you have nothing else to play then maybe you can try it but I definitely do not recommend if you have a long backlog, it isn't worth it.
short and fun metroidvania
The inertia in the movements makes it very frustrating.
This is a short, sweet and really charming Metroidvania! I've been digging into my backlog for shorter games to play since I'm now an adult with a full time job who can't just sink dozens of hours into a game anymore, and I'm really happy I chose to play this!
The game isn't difficult, but it did take me a few tries to beat some bosses and areas. Most of the secrets and upgrades are discoverable by yourself with a little bit time and sometimes trial and error with difficult jumps. It's just the right amount of challenge to make me feel like I'm making progress and achieving something without being a pushover. Each area in the game has it's own gimmick which keeps stuff fresh and nothing overstays it's welcome. I really like the dialogue as well! All the collectable cassettes are a nice touch, although I mostly stuck to the default one. White on pure black looks amaaaazing on the steam deck OLED.
Definitely recommend picking this up and I think it's more than worth it at full price. I hope one day we may even get a sequel. Good job dev :)
Decent Metroidvania for those that feel other games of the genre to be too daunting. It feels Megaman-y with some of its combat but nothing too ridiculous. It's a bit too linear at times but nothing too patronising.
I only have 2 real gripes with the game as the enemy and progression design are subjective/to taste: the map UI/UX is not great, it's too flat, it's hard sometimes to remember where you left a secret/optional item so the return journey with your newly acquired powerup is like trying to look for a McDonalds in a village. The other gripe is some rooms REQUIRE you (and they're main progression rooms too) to kill EVERYONE on the screen/in the room. Sometimes in the genre there is spongy enemy fatigue so you skip past them, there are at least 2 rooms that you can exit out of (most of the time this requirement pops up you are caged) and you won't know why you couldn't seemingly progress through the only way possible, well there you have it, you just had to kill a stupid frog. One bug to report, apparently the game runs at 45fps if your monitor's refresh rate is 144hz (maybe some other values too but I can't say), since the game doesn't seem to go above 60 just kinda suck it up for the 2 or so sessions that you'll be playing the game for at 60hz. Definitely recommended despite these nitpicks. Has some nice music and artstyle with occassionally good dialogue.
What a great and cute metroidvania! I love the style, I love the gameplay, I love everything about that game, and especially the fact that it has not huge duration, it's comparably short, couple evenings, it's perfect duration for me. Whe other metroidvanias try to be as long as possible.. and I hate it.. I have not so much time to play, I want to get concentrated banch of fun time/emotions and then try something new. And that game do it in the best way, provide you with a lot of fun dialogs but not overload with bla-bla-bla. Gives you a variety of enemies, it gives you challenges, gives you everything that should give a nice game. Totally recommend this one!! Thanks to developers from the doinksoft studio for this awesome game. And thanks to Devolver Digital to highlight it for me, you are the best publisher, you are great in finding talents and giving them a spotlight!!
Cute animals. Short and sweet. Faithful to the Metroid style of play. Good.
A light metroidvania that looks like a Spectrum game about the cat on a spaceship that can enter/exit from a mecha suit,The action consists of traversing various rooms, solving some light puzzles and fighting the occasional tricky boss fight against a mouse (what else?).
A lot of fun for it's short runtime, and although there are a few frustrating bits even an oldie like me can enjoy it.
Very cute, very fun
4 hours of gameplay at 78% completion
You play as the pet cat of a space scientist who crash landed in a hostile environment. You need to help your human out.
This 8-bit-looking gem might be the best thing I've seen on an OLED. It's perfect for handheld given the Gameboy-like presentation.
Amazing game. Very solid platformer with great combat mechanics and the upgrades of your mech combined with the different areas switch up the gameplay throughout the game. The story is simple but well-made and the art style is very charming in my opinion. Overall this was a great experience. 10/10
Great game, definition of short and sweet. amazing platformer and beautiful animations.
This game is so enjoyable. I love this game. The style and music are purrfect! 10/10
Better to take this game on sales if you really want to save your money!
short, compact and simple. the holy trinity of what makes up Gato Roboto. Finished with 78% on a first playthrough and for a dollar, its more than worth it.
Gato Roboto combines 2 of my favourite things. Mechs and cats (and also metroidvanias). this game is really nothing spectacular as i would say, but its still a really fun sort of brain scratcher or just to pass the time. i mean for a dollar, you cant really ask for much can you?
the power ups are usually rewarded right after completing an area, offered as rewards. theres a few collectibles here and there if you're interested like health upgrades and cassettes that change the pixel style of the game. if you did collect 7 of them, you could give it to the engineer down below and let him do something to you? i dont really know never got that part. the story is overtly simplistic and harmless with a few nods here and there through dialogue boxes and sometimes environmental storytelling. the real story that plays on though is pretty lackluster but that goes for a lot of metroidvanias.
The art design is not phenomenal, but it gets the job done. like i said, its simplistic but it has a certain charm to it. it feels compact and nice to look at without hurting your eyes.
Overall, its just a really nice and harmless game to play. nothing wrong with a quick in-n-out 3 hour adventure.
a wonderful short and sweet metroidvania. there isn't a single dull moment throughout, and while it naturally lacks the grand overarching exploration throughout a massive world that most metroidvanias have, its basically as flawless in every other way as a metroidvania can be. a few short optional challenges make it fun to replay a few times through if you're worried about value. pick it up on sale and i absolutely guarantee you will have a good time.
I absolutely love the art style and vibe! Excellent retro fun!
I got this game for $1, and I must say, it does not disappoint. It is exactly the metroidvania style game I've been looking for and it is very enjoyable and fun! I would highly recommend to anyone!
I sadly got a bug that made it impossible to 100%, but I enjoyed it still. I checked with a guide for every healthkit was, but they were all collected already and it said I had a 9/10. I can settle for 97% though. Charming little game
Yes, very nice
Smart, cute and short metroidvania
good game. wish there was more content, but still worth it
its fun size
i really really enjoyed this kitty Metriod game please support the developer for working hard on a short masterpiece
Gato Roboto is a charming little microvania that, although it doesn’t make much of an impact, makes for a decently solid entry point into the genre without too much of a time sink or difficulty spike. It’s short, only 3 or so hours, and is pretty easy to boot, with generous save points and easy-to-find upgrades that boost your health quickly.
I will warn you that this game is very much a “run of the mill” metroidvania, it takes a lot from NES Metroid without really adding anything of substance. The idea of getting out of your mech for more precise platforming is sort of interesting, but is bogged down by the actual cat controls being weirdly over-reactive to the point where it feels like I’m losing control of my character.
You’ll get very standard upgrades, use rockets and regular guns, the level design itself is almost unnoticeably standard, to the point where my brain was kind of turned off for a lot of it. To be fair though, I’ve played my fair share of Metroidvanias already, and this one definitely emanates more of a “beginner vibe”. I did find the style to be pretty cohesive and pretty to look at, I’m always a sucker for a Gameboy-esque aesthetic and it contributed to the microvania feel.
Overall, there’s really not much I can find wrong with Gato Roboto, and for what it’s worth, it’s a simple, short game that isn’t too difficult and won’t last in your brain for very long. Not that that’s a bad thing, for its price and size it works well with what it has.
Love it. Original NES Metroid but it doesn't make me want to strangle myself with the controller's cord.
This is a PURRfect beginner-friendly metroidvania, the writing is incredibly charming and funny, it's also quite nostalgic for anyone who grew up in the Gameboy era.
It's definitely worth the 8$ price tag, even more so if you can grab it on sale.
Don't miss out on Gato Roboto, this game makes other metroidvania's look MEOWdiocre.
Cute but short Metroidvania. I'd recommend getting it on sale. The graphics can be a little headache-inducing based upon lighting in your room, monitor refresh rate, and what color palette you choose. As far as difficulty goes, the standard play is very easy. Bosses, with the exception of the Ventilation one, were challenging but fair - as a casual player, I beat each one in 1-2 tries.
The Good
+Cute
+Light humor
+Music's not bad
+Map actually isn't terrible
+Frequent save spots
+Endgame point of no return clearly marked
+The palette tapes do have a useful alternative purpose
YMMV
~Unskippable splash screens, but they're short
~One bullet hell boss with frustrating controls
~Enemies don't drop anything, so not worth fighting in most cases
~Achievement completionists will need to speedrun and skip health upgrades
~Roughly 2-3 hours of play, depending on completion rate
The Bad
-Can't disable frequent flashing lights
-Occasionally got a headache while playing
-FPS issues on 144Hz monitors. See forums for possible fixes.
-Ventilation boss based on RNG, not skill
-Backtracking in Ventilation area is annoying and for one room, impossible
Played on:
Win11, i7-14700K, RTX4060 Ti 8GB, 32GB DDR5-6000 @ 1920x1080
Using PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S
Gato Roboto is a short, digestible, and good looking, metroidvania. It does not add anything new, or revolutionary, to the genre but it does a great job with what it offers. Without a overly complex map, nor overstaying its welcome with frequent backtracking, it is a incredibly well paced game. The mechanics are nice and clean, controls are tight. Zones are not too difficult however, and the bosses are the only real challenge to be found here. The game can be 100% in 2-3 hours and speed ran in 1, making it beginner friendly to those new to the genre. I believe the game is reasonably priced, but for those still on the fence, wait for a sale. A good addition to any library.
Great on the Steam Deck.
Great Metroidvania without any annoying backtracking. Its pretty short, I finished it in about 3 hours or so, but its a lot of fun the whole way through.
I have played this game for 12 minutes.
TWELVE.
And I already want to give it a positive review. The 1-bit graphics are beautiful, one of the only games I've seen with that artstyle. The story already has me hooked, you're a cat in Samus's suit. The simple mechanics are nice, combined with fun animations, and a dedicated button to meow as the cat. Would recommend
Short and sweet... totally worth the bucks. But I wish they had named the color yellow something else
If there's a controller that this game will work with, I haven't been able to find it yet. I presume that the best way to play this game is via a time machine ride back to when the hardware and software that supported it was still available and in use.
I honestly wasn't having much fun with the game. The slow unskippable initial cutscenes annoyed and the weird music aggravated. And I found the humor very "meh" (I get the jokes, but they didn't make me laugh).
If I had this back when I was a teenager on my GameBoy I'd probably enjoy it, but 30+ years later it's not really doing anything for me. :(
This game is a gem sparkling brightly in the massive pile of metroidvanias that have been released over the past several years. The genre is over-saturated and sorely lacking new ideas. While I don't think this game has done anything wildly revolutionary for the genre, I do want to commend it for being enjoyable enough that I didn't get bored of it and lose interest like I have with nearly all of the metroidvania games I've played since CaveStory. This game is concise, not a second longer than it needs to be.
Its fun and cute and has enjoyable bosses. I appreciate that the cat's ability to leave the mech to squeeze through tight areas was a fun mechanic to explore despite not being anything groundbreaking.
Overall I think I recommend this game simply because it manages to be fun and engaging and captured my attention better than nearly every metroidvania I can think of that I've played over the past several years. Give it a shot if you think it looks like fun.
You play as a cat inside mech robo suits! Short and sweet metroidvania, nice breather between bigger games, meow.
There are some cute moments, and boss fights are a welcome surprise in an otherwise easy, dull stroll.
stellar game. it's the cat's meow.
i hate mice
