Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

I highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys platformers, especially those who don't rage easily. This game can be brutal.

One of the Best experiences I have ever played. The 4 games build on each other really well. Some parts can be challenging yet never did I find myself hating the game. It is well made and the sound and visuals go really well together. Would Recommend

Shovel Knight is a great game, along with it's standalone expansions. Treasure Trove comes with all expansions bundled AND with showdown, all in one package. Buy it, and you'll have a great time.

This game is pretty good not perfect it has some design flaws the controls are a bit wonky you do have to be really precise if you want to get something done especially in boss fights they are ridiculous if you play single player but it's still pretty fun i recommend it.

Frustrating to play, the Knight moves too slowly.

I HATE the mega man games. I despise most 8-bit games in general in fact, because they hearken back to a time where games were in their absolute infancy; where quarter-munching arcade difficulty was shoved into a full price cartridge so that you felt like you actually got some value for your money when the games, when played flawlessly, would be over in less than 30 minutes otherwise.

Most games that try to continue that legacy fall into the exact same pitfalls: nightmarish difficulty, punishing failures, and clunky, overly simplistic controls and gameplay with an astonishing lack of content.

Shovel knight is nothing like those games. It controls incredibly, it has a massive amount of content to where the price tag feels like a bargain, good stories, fun characters, and a massive amount of variety across all 4 campaigns. (Plague of shadows kinda sucks but the story is alright at least.) This game is universally beloved for a reason, and it blows the games it's paying homage to out of the water.

This game was already worth the price of admission at launch, and now it's 5 TIMES bigger.

There's no shortage of retro-styled 2D platformers out there, but very few of them can match the quality or charm of Shovel Knight.

What a love letter to platforming and retro games. The pixel art is amazing. The humor and charm is so endearing and makes you wanna see more. The platforming and game play was so engaging and fun to learn. It really does deserve the praise it has gotten over the years and my only regret was not playing it sooner. 100% a must play if you enjoy this type of game

I Love the style

Do I recommend this game? Yes, but with a caveat. The game is obviously made with a lot of heart, and is a faithful spiritual successor to old side scroller pixel art games like Mega Man, but it is brutally hard in that same way. So this game is for you if you like old school platformers that are very punishing for small mistakes.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of the game isn't that hard, and actually feels really good, but all of that can go away very quickly when you bump into someone and are knocked back into a pit, dying immediately and having to go back to the last checkpoint. The game does a little bit of a risk reward thing by having you drop some percentage of your money every time you die, but it'll be there for you to pick back up again if you reach the same spot, but sometimes you died over a giant pit and going for that money again is just a trap that will end you in a downward spiral. Sometimes you just have to acknowledge that certain things aren't worth going for and to just continue making forward progress. But also for those that crave a challenge there will be all sorts of hidden areas and hard to reach things that will reward a skilled player for taking those risks and platforming properly.

Oh! There's an important thing! This game is littered with hidden walls and things! It's a great aspect to the game and makes it really fun to explore and use your gamer sense to find the extra stuff the devs left lying around for those able to sniff it out.

Also with the Treasure Trove version you get access to multiple stories and characters to play as, that will all give a different overall play experience (or a spin on things you were already used to), so it's a really good deal if you're looking for a lot of content. Trying to find all the secrets for each of the 4 campaigns will give a decent amount of playtime and challenge!

So again, overall, fun game, worth the money, but be ready to die a lot like you're back on your first NES again.

(Just know that it only says 15 hours because I played the rest on consoles, and just had to buy it again on my PC)

This game. This game right here. I love this game with all my heart. The only cons I can point out could be pros to others or chalked up to my skill issue. And even if everything I disliked about this game were true problems, the pros would outweigh them so incredibly that I'd barely like the game any less. The story, absolute perfection in each of the four main campaigns. The characters, amazing and entertaining personalities that draw you into the world of the game. The music, insanely catchy, each theme song for each character matching perfectly, every single one being as peaceful or chaotic as it has to be. The mechanics, rightfully taught throughout the game, making sure you know exactly what to do with the information, but still making it difficult. The comedy, gag characters everywhere in the game to make sure you laugh at least once. Now, I'm going to list all of the campaigns in order of best to worst, in my opinion, of course.

Specter of Torment: The mysterious Specter Knight's story, the best of the 4. This campaign is the easiest, but the mechanics are my favorite. I feel the characters have a lot more depth and this campaign provides a lot more backstory on Shield Knight, Black Knight, and numerous side characters, as well as new NPCs with their own stories. Out of the 4, I felt the most immersed in this one's story, and the ending genuinely touched me. And I honestly love the music in this one, but its not the best of the 4. That honor goes to...

King of Cards: The conceited King Knight's story, what I assume is the most unique. I was putting the top 2 very close but then came to that final conclusion. I love King Knight's personality, how he learns over time during the story but still stays the same in the end. The music in this one is my favorite, and I remember playing Shovel of Hope for the first time, getting to Pridemoor Keep, the castle King Knight usurps, and the music was just something different, not to mention that in the JSAB collab(another game I really like), the "In the Halls of the Usurper" remix is the best of the 4, which also match the four campaigns. And I forgot to talk about the entire board game they created, "Joustus". Joustus is such a fun mini-game to play, with puzzles, and mechanics that aren't too hard to learn. And again, we get to learn about more side characters stories. That brings me to third place,...

Shovel of Hope: The pure-hearted Shovel Knight's story, what started it all. This campaign does a great job introducing the world of Shovel Knight to new players, and I recommend every new player play this one first. In this, we meet most of the characters that appear throughout the saga, and see the true enemies, rivalries, and friendships. One of the biggest benefits of this campaign is the collabs. If you play on Playstation, you get to canonically fight Kratos and win(which shows Shovel Knight's true power), but if you are on XBOX or PC, you fight the Battle Toads(and the Kratos fight is a LOT better). It feels wrong putting the original at third place, but I guess the devs just learned what was right. What contradicts that, however, is...

Plague of Shadows: The mischievous Plague Knight's story, the worst of the 4. I gonna be real for a moment. I DON'T LIKE PLAYING THIS CAMPAIGN. The first time I tried this campaign, I quit of the first level and didn't play until Specter of Torment, and that's not just because this is the hardest campaign(while it IS), but because out of the four, this has the WORST mechanics, so bad that I genuinely wanted to stop playing this game, which is odd since I'm working harder on this review than most essays at school. The story is fine, and so is the music, but I just can't handle the game-play for the life of me. It's just so uncoordinated and not much is as explained as the others(which ended up being pretty difficult for my more so child-brain that I had the first time I tried this campaign). Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean I didn't have at least some fun playing it, I DID still finish the game, but it's just not as good as the others in the slightest. I still think that it should be played right after Shovel of Hope because of where it is on the timeline. I'm not even making a transition for this next one.

Shovel Knight Showdown: Compared to the others, this probably shouldn't be considered a campaign. It's obviously a lot shorter than the others, and at this point, I forgot if I even played it. I barely remember the story, and from what I do, it was horribly introduced and simply not nearly as good as the others. I do like Shovel Knight Showdown though, it's fun to play against others, and especially as characters you can't usually play as in the base game. Anyways, it was kinda horrible and not really needed.

So that was my review of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, and I want anyone reading this to get, play, and truly like this game. And just because this review is on Treasure Trove doesn't mean I didn't like Shovel Knight Dig, another great game, while a lot shorter, still has good content. I really hope someone sees this, I wrote it on a school night until 1 AM lol. Worth it. 10/10 Top Five Favorite Games.

Amazing game

I must have been 11 or 12 when I first played Shovel Knight back on my Wii U. I later bought it again on my Switch, and now I own it on PC as well.

If you don't live under a rock, you've likely at least heard of Shovel Knight, and if you know what's good for you, you'll PLAY Shovel Knight. This game is a love letter to NES Platformers, with simple controls and imaginative level design, that's difficult in all the best ways. It's a game I'll come back to time and time again for another playthrough, and that applies to all 4 campaigns. Buy this game. At full price.

8/10 really stunning game, but it gets a bit of a lower rating due to its artificial difficulty.
The boss rush near the end of the og game is abysmal dogshit and halts any natural progression.
Spectre Knight DLC is an easy 9/10 tho, so much has been remixed and improved.
