4/10 skill issue
I played this game ages ago when I was a young teenager and it was and still is one of my most favourite games of all time and my most favourite character is the Plague Knight

Pretty great, though.
It's whimsical, fast paced with good humor and great music. Your brain will be working quickly as you fly threw the screens. The art style invokes the cozy retro feel. It never puts you against a challenge that is truly to hard.
The Shovel Knight series (nicely contained in one package) are one of those games that tries to emulate the 8-bit days of old. To its credit, the games perfectly walk that tight rope of giving you that real 8-bit platformer feel whilst simultaneously knowing where to innovate to keep it feeling fresh and contemporary.
The Dark Souls-type system used for currency in this game can make it feel brutal at times, but it's always fair in its treatment of the player and their time.
A fantastic, if short game that's downright beautiful at times, while at the same time, feels like they summoned Satan from the Seven Hells to help design the platforming for the game. Hell I didn't die to any boss except Enchantress (surprise, surprise, platforming boss), meanwhile I had over 9000 deaths to just gravity.
Still enjoyed it
This feels like the indie version of "The emperor wears no clothes". They charge €40 for the most generic platformer. Frustratingly dated controls. Can't understand the high rating when the selection of legendary indie games charge half of this. While not actually hating the game I give it a thumbs down to warn potential buyers this isn't that awesome.

Phenomenal. 5 games in 1! They all have their similarities, but are quite different from each other. Scratches that NES itch, without being too ridiculously hard.
I honestly believe that this is a great game, I love each of the 4 character stories and appreciate the fact that none of them feel watered down compared to the rest of them. While difficult at times I never once felt the game was unfair. :)

Fantastic game, great art style and stories though I haven't touched the card game at all...
The game is quite fun. I enjoy the platforming and especially enjoy the options for playing different knights. Each Knight offers different gameplay which may suite a person's taste. I enjoy playing King Knight due to the comedic dialogue and the speedy gameplay but all of the knights have different things to offer. I at least recommend giving one of them a shot

Cute and gets harder and harder and very hard but then timing yourself helps. You have to be very patient coz I play fast and this drove me nuts on how to be patient. But passed it in like 10 hours (bc had to get used to it).
7/10 lots of fun, albeit a lil annoying
This game was blast from start to finish. Loved the gameplay, dialogue, and visuals. These days when I'm looking for a fun platformer to breeze through, I love coming back to Specter Knight's campaign, and when I want a little more, I play King Knight. Not to say I don't like Shovel Knight or Plague Knight's campaigns, I just prefer those two. Looking forward to the DX release whenever that's coming.

I for some reason just can't get into this game yet, even though I love its style. I grew up on NES, SNES and Genesis, so this is right up my alley. Yet for some reason I play a level or two and then move on to something else.
This is a wonderful game though, I really look forward to when I can dedicate the time this game deserves to completing it and all its expansions.
Holy Carp is this the perfect retro throwback. Elements of so many classics meld into a new, amazing experience.
I really, really love Shovel Knight. I've played through all 4 campaigns several times each over the years, they're all really good. Great music, lovely art style, funny writing (especially in King of Cards), just the right level of challenge for my tastes.
3 of the games have completely unique mechanics and level designs and are effectively completely different games (well, except for the 8 reoccurring knight bosses). Plague of Shadows is more of a reworked version of Shovel of Hope with a different playable character, but even then the character does play very differently, there are new events and level segments, and the story is entertaining.

Best sidescroller action game on Steam. It is full of love for the hits of the past, and has an identity all it's own at the same time. You are doing a disservice to yourself by not playing this game.
I've played this game basically since launch and I've loved it and every campaign, but it's only been fairly recently that I realised just how good they all are. Just beating the levels is fairly trivial, but using all your tools to beat them as quickly and stylishly as possible is where this game really starts to shine, and if you treat them as speed games, then you have 4 of the best speed games ever created. As speed games they rise to being art so good it should be put in the guggenheim.
Very good, but before you delete the game (if you finish it and want to delete it) make a copy of your save because it will be deleted.

I don't know if there are words to describe just how much I love this game.
This game gave me my online username, who knows what I would've called myself if it weren't for this.
I always felt guilty for having a pirated copy for so many years, so when this was on sale this year, I bought it as soon as I could.
Truly my favorite video game of all time. Even if I end up fixating on a different game, nothing will ever top this.
it's kinda hard but it's REALLY satisfying
This game is what happens when you blend retro frustration with modern technology. It will kick you up and down at first, but when you get the hang of it, you'll feel unstoppable. Very fun, can be replayed endlessly without losing anything.
Each of the four campaigns feels distinct from each other in meaningful ways. They all play well, even if Plague Knight doesn't change the formula other than giving you a new character and a different story. Other than that, it uses the same levels as the main campaign, which is Shovel of Hope, featuring the title character Shovel Knight. Plague of Shadows is probably the worst campaign, but even then it still plays fine.
The other three campaigns are all lovingly crafted for each of their respective characters. King Knight and Spectre Knight give their respective campaigns a lot of energy, while still allowing you plenty of room to breathe. The humor isn't off-putting, and adds a lot to the experience overall, and while it may occasionally feel a bit forced, it's still written with the setting in mind, rather than in contrast to the setting (a writing sin that I really hate seeing in games.)
The magic items for each character feel a bit unbalanced. Some are useless, while others are practically essential (the biggest examples being the Phase Locket and Will Skull.) If you have the creativity to use them, you'll get a lot out of them. Otherwise, I'd advise sticking to the ones that work in the most situations.
There are also elements in each campaign that I don't think work, the biggest being the card game in King of Cards. While it is optional, it also makes progressing a lot more convenient, thereby feeling more essential than it should be. That said, I do appreciate it for what it is, and the fact that the devs took the time to make something as in-depth as a fictional card game, when many Triple-A studios today can't properly make a working and complete game with endless resources and crunching, should be commended.
Overall, 8/10. A lot of love and attention has been given to this game, and it pays off very well.
Shovel Knight is better than many other games of its kind, both classic and modern.
