A rather good game. You have to manage resources at the beginning. You need to watch out for the shadows at night. It's just really well thought out. A+ job for the game overall Dev :D
I find the mechanic where things break down very quickly to not be helpful for the overall experience
Neverliria is the kind of game I would have expected to play back when games were a completely new concept. I am not going to bore you with positive specifics. The game is exactly as it is described. The problem is the game mechanics are so horrible it is what makes this game feel archaic and outdated. Survival is dependant on carrying each item one-by-one to whatever location you deem suitable. There are no bag systems. There is a chest you can carry with some items in it, but if you decide explore for a decent location and enemies appear, you must drop the chest, open the chest, and quickly craft a fire pit to save your life. I have no idea why you can't skip all those steps and just craft the bloody things. This is the kind of game mechanics you can expect to play and is the main flaw holding Neverliria back.
TLDR : Cheap and incomplete ripoff of "Kingdom". Worth its price, but don't expect a lot of challenge or fun.
Concept is nice although it's just ripping off the "Kingdom" games.
Game's description is mostly a lie :
- There are not 20 types of buildings (unless you consider fires, chests and trees as buildings)
- The only "improvements" you can make on some buildings is to add a dwarf/gnome/leprechaun (they come from the dwarf castle, live in leprechaun's home and are referred as "gnomes" or "leave". Take your pick)
- There is ZERO unique items
- World is NOT proceduraly generated. I started the game 4 times, all the buildings and NPC were at the very same place. The only thing that is indeed moving are the 3 trees with Phoenix eggs, everything else is static
- You barely get support from your allies to fight the monsters. Finishing the human castle ends the game, and the gnomes don't fight. There is only ONE gnome that could help you if you build the blood tree, but only if you place it near the enemies (otherwise it won't fly anywhere and will be useless).
- The pixel art is not "beautiful". It'snot ugly and I know it's always very subjective to judge art so make your own opinion, but I thought it was far-fetched to qualify it as beautiful
Moreover, this game doesn't bring any challenge, and feels unfinished :
- Enemies have only one spawn point throughout the whole game so all you have to do is plant a totem (that kills any enemy) behind a wall (unbreakable AFAIK) and you're safe for the whole game, you don't even need a fire, and even less the so called "allies".
- There are two musics, one for the night, one for the day. No music for events and very little SFX.
- Medusa's head is bugged. You can't put it in your chest (although it's meant to be) and if you try to, it locks the chest and you can't open it again, just carry it. It's not a big issue with normal chests since opening another chest will solve the problem. But if you tried to put medusa's head in the mobile chest (which is unique and can't be destroyed) then it's forever bugged, can't be opened and doesn't auto-collect anymore and you end up being followed by a useless and frustrating item.
- When you run too much, the character stops for a while to catch its breath. But there's nothing to let you know that she's reaching her limit. Plus, when you release the "run" command, it resets the fatigue immediately and you can run again, making the whole thing useless and annoying.
- Sometimes the mobile chest will just be locked on your character and run at the same speed (although it's usually slower than you and just follows from a distance).
- When a medusa grabs an item and goes back to the portal, she doesn't disappear and dies when the sun rises, leaving its head.
- The only battle that sounded exciting was the one occurring at the very end when you finish the castle, but it's just a 10 seconds cut-scene followed by a "congrats you won" type of message. -_-
The game feels like a student project with a lot of ambitions that got abandoned. You'll play a few hours but won't finish it with any satisfaction or sens of accomplishment.
Too bad, it could have been great :(
Imperfect Gem
Neverliria is a cute sidescroller akin to Kingdoms but on the lighter side. Manage your hunger and basic economy while fending off the shadows at night. You are powerless against them but over time get things to help you keep the shadows at bay.
I very much enjoyed the simplicity of this game, from the controls to the objectives. Didn’t take long to learn, and felt great to master. At a little over 6 hours, I have completed Neverliria along with all objectives. I write this review quite satisfied.
The only real con to me is that it IS a short game.
Sound – Simplistic, but does its job. Music cues for hunger, day and night cycle. Never got annoying.
Graphics – Basic pixel game, delivering what you would expect.
Gameplay – Simple sidscroller, with no jumping or below ground. 1 plane, build, expand, keep the shadows at bay until you can work with other races to restore order.
Replay Value – Once you complete the game, none.
Story – Barely has one, but doesn’t need it. Casual game you can jump in and out of.
If you are looking for a nice casual game on the cheap, this wont hurt. I got it for around $2 CAD and don’t regret it. The first couple playthroughs while I was dying and learning made me want to go back repeatedly until I mastered it. I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 hours of playtime… except the one time I was close to winning and forgot to eat, ending the game. That was frustrating, but also my fault.
Great game. The art style is endearing and the mysterious mechanics are largely intuitive. Good length and difficulty.
So i did love this game LAST YEAR when i finished it and it had just the one glitched achievement ....but after recent update its a broken piece of trash. No wonder the price dropped down to $1.69 cnd. To the dev team, would you kindly fix this game? let me give you a small list of glitches to get you started..
- finding a golden egg does not trigger the new "find golden egg" achievement!
-you build a chest but its permanently transparent with a little sign on top that reads 1/2 wood
- your chest or phoenix will drop down below the dirt and disappear randomly by just picking it up or dropping it
- the daylight timer will sticks at the sun symbol for long periods of time making it daylight for 15mins
there are more but i rather not waste anymore of my time with this review or beta testing the game itself...
PLEASE get your sh*t together dev team, this is a bloody mess boys!
I'm editing my review because the game has been update & fixed.
Neverliria is a lovely little game, it has the same vibe from Kingdom but it is more casual. If you like base building and defending this is good game. It's harder at first because you must learn by yourself, surviving. But once you get the idea, your base starts to prosper. The game is relatively short but I think it has a nice value per time. In fact I would like to see more content and/or games by the developer, I would totally play it!
A cute little game with a very nice atmosphere.
I hope the developer finds the time to add a little more content, but I got it on a sale and it was worth
the money and time.
7/10 from me.
ok, so this Game is a bit annoying, But it is also very fun :)it is all in the way you plan out your survival . Like always make sure you have a fire at night and grow food right away . By building everything in order to unlock other things you can go far :) have fun and good luck
I hate to leave a bad review but this game is horrible. Not fun at all. I am fine with the graphics and love the type of game it is but it really needs some work...LOTS OF WORK! Having to carry around a chest with my items is probably not the worst thing but getting items out of the chest is ridiculously stupid. The building part of the game is even worse. I have to move each item from my chest to the item being built? Who on earth thought people would enjoy that? It could have some small potential very far into the future but I will not be finding out.
Feels similar to Kingdom: New Lands but is not as good. Go play Kindgom instead.
Glitches still exist, for example when you cancel a building while holding a chest that chest bugs out and can no longer be handled.
Bought on special for $4.49, probably won't go back to it after 3 hours gameplay.
Incredible atmosphere. Nice Graphics and Sounds.
Had some critical issues. Fixed by DEV after review.
