PVP, PVE,

You cannot host your own server. If you want your own server, you will need to shell out at least $25 a month to GPortal for hosting. Requested refund.
This is one of the rare times I wish Steam had a neutral option. I don't dislike Deadside, I just feel in it's current state, others in the genre do things better. Deadside is coming up short by the tried and true method of copying others while doing nothing better than others in this field.
I'd like to highlight what I think it gets right. Considering it's trying to be a Rust clone but with modern weapons, most of my review will use Rust as the bench mark.
*Positives
- Early start: One thing Rust does very well over titles like DayZ, getting down an early start so some form of progression is felt. The sense of having a spot to depot looted items, plays an important role in feeling like you're progressing, even if it's very short loot runs. You're slowly building stock and never feeling like you'll be back to square one as a naked on the beach. Deadside nails this! You start with a knife which allows you to get a base down extremely fast by only hitting a bush. Add in the fact, twig building is very cost effective vs eco raids, it feels very balanced to get a spot down and start working towards upgrading your base. Very similar to Rust moving from wood to stone.
- Gear: Deadside loot is very easy to come by and this means even weapons. A simple "naked" start you can have a shotgun or pistol from the very first location you loot. Meaning, a quick snowball is always possible. A very important feature to fun and exciting moments. A should add, Deadside also does a good job of locking the higher tier gear behind more dangerous monuments and a tiered trader leveling system. So while it is quick to get a weapon & you don't feel defenseless. You still have to work at getting high tier armor and weapons.
Things to do: I'm going to place this in the positive section, but will come back to this with a negative point of view. It does a good job of having missions and events constantly appearing all over the map. This leads to POI's for players to actively engage in PVP. It also gives the sense of Rust monument control. Building near an area that constantly has tier 3 missions, it very similar to building an oil rig base to constantly contest.
*Needs work
- Balancing: There a lot of balance issues. Building upkeep cost is a nonfactor. A simple once a week casual could easily farm for 30min and have 30 days of upkeep on a standard honey comb 2x2. Add in the fact trees and bushes are not removed when harvesting. A clan can simply have 1 tree and 1 bush in their compound and it's infinite resources with zero fear of their farmer getting ganked by the local solo.
This also extends to raid vs build cost. Raiding tools like c4 and dynamite are everywhere and in large supply. So it's very easy to farm the resources to raid even the biggest of bases. To add to this, when raiding a 1st floor wall, all walls above this are removed. So building up does little to protect vs a raiding party (somewhat, explained in a later point).
- Food & Water: The consumption rate is terrible. You will be forced to eat and drink nonstop (every 20min from full).
*Negatives
- Building: You can only build with squares, this does not include half walls of any kind. So building as a whole lacks creativity. Triangle foundations would go a long way to improving base designs & options.
- Raid options: There are no ladders or any tools to reach roofs or higher spots of a base. This means a team could essentially place TC on the shooting floor and you would be forced to raid from the ground up via doors. Thus another area of cat & mouse between the raider and builder that should exist but isn't present.
- Static map: Unlike Rust, the map is pre-designed. So each and every wipe will feel exactly the same, which will lead into my next negative.
- Lack of stories: One of the key features of Rust and why people sink 10,000+ hours is the ability of each and every wipe to feel different. The ability to shape your story by the in-game options. You don't want to be a PVP chad but instead build a berry farm and sell goods for guns and scrap, go for it. You want this wipe to be a water base engaging & contesting oil rig or cargo, you can do that. It will be a different experience every time. Deadside lacks the options of your story to feel different each wipe. Essentially everyone will be doing the exact same things. Living in a square base, running the same missions & events.
- Things to do: I mentioned in the positives this would show up as a negative. While it does feature a lot of missions and events, one area that it falls short. Every mission or event spawns in a designated location. So you're left to repeatedly running the same things rinse and repeat. It gets old very fast. Add that your time isn't being broken up by having to go farm or plan out your detailed build, it becomes very stale to run/drive to mission, go home to depot, only to turn around and go to your 15th run of the same type of event. The game focuses entirely to much on these events being the center of progression to better items. Allowing for a diversity of play styles would go a long way to helping the player not feel stuck doing the same things over and over, day after day, week after week, until you've seen all there is to see in one single wipe.....ugggggg.
- Farming: There is no farming in the game at all, which yet again pigeon holes the player into one single play style. Farm missions for the billionth time.
- Server Size: I think this is the biggest negative for me as a player and one that keeps me coming back to Rust. Whether you are fighting on a 500 pop server or a steady 200 pop. Every wipe you never know who your neighbors will be but you 100% know you'll have some memories to create that will shape each wipe into a different experience. Deadside has a max of 70 player servers at this time and with a fairly large map, so this leads to most of the map feeling empty. You are not trying to find a build location near a location you would like to be, 99% of the time, this area will be void of any humans and more than likely your neighbor will be outside of even visual range. Add in the lack of options to mess with said neighbor and both parties are left with 2 options. Raid or PVP at an event because no one is doing anything outside someones base when you have zero ability to do anything and farming isn't even required to leave your base.
*Final thoughts
I see a lot of potential in Deadside, it gets some key aspects right. Sadly, at this time, it just doesn't offer anything to make the experience memorable. I hope the devs take note of reviews such as this and expand the game to offer an experience that is rich and different each wipe. Until that time, I'll take a break and monitor patches hoping to see a more fleshed out gameplay loop.
**Extra**
- Raid Tokens: Bring back the server option to enable raid tokens instead of on/off raiding. This in combination with current build system could be a great alternative to Rust's ever present offline raiding issue.
Great game , has a lot of potential. I've played in beta as well , things changed , in a good way and devs will cook for sure. Needs more popularity imo.
Been playing this for a few years on and off, it's a game i always come back to.
The game has been steadily improving over the years and recently with a massive update that added QOL improvements and vehicles, big new part of the map etc.
There's different tiers of PvE content wich are missions rated easy to epic, with the new update they really did become epic, more ruthless bots and turrets and boobytraps.
Gunplay feels nice and there's a good variation of weapons.
PvP is where it shines for me personally and that got better with the recent updates.
Massive overhaul of the building system made it one of my favourites.
Can reccommend! Try it out.
Deadside is a fun blend of Rust’s base-building mechanics with the survival and exploration elements of DayZ, with a touch of that gritty, post-Soviet feel from games like Ratkov. It’s a more streamlined version of those titles, making it more accessible for players who don’t want to dive too deep into the complexity of other survival games.
While it’s not as intense or detailed as some of the bigger titles in the genre, it strikes a solid balance between action, PvP, and exploration. The atmosphere is great, and the environment really pulls you into its bleak, decaying world. The gunplay is satisfying, and the overall progression feels rewarding.
There are still a few rough edges here and there, but the potential for this game is HUGE.
Message to the devs: Please keep improving the game! Keep adding more content, new features, and especially character customization options. We’re loving what we’ve got so far and want to see this game grow and evolve. More maps, more gear, more ways to personalize our characters, and more crafting elements base building elements, activities would be amazing. We’re here for the long haul, and we want moreeee!
Keep up the great work, and don’t stop improving this gem!
Interesting game kinda like a dayz lite which makes it more enjoyable. I really like the duck hunting mechanic personally. Fun with friends to kill time in.
Aussie player here, only 3 official servers exist for us and both of the pvp ones wipe every few weeks. US and other places get no wipe pvp servers but we're shafted, oh and there's no dedicated server options, you have to use the overpriced garbage providers like gportal if you'd like to play alone
Coming into 1.0, I was initially super skeptical. This honestly used to be a shit game with nothing to do, convoluted crafting, no ground vehicles, crap fast travel, horrid base building that was IMMENSELY grindy & awkward raiding mechanics.
UPDATED TO 1.0 - IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME
Pro: Gun play
- Gun play feels great. Currently on U.S East and haven't had any issues with disconnections or hits registering. Can find guns pretty easy, AI "scavs" are constantly roaming or in areas of map.
Con:
Finding scopes can be difficult and there are only certain weapons with rails that are actually compatible. In PvP servers, it can make it frustrating when fighting other players. Roof campers will give you Rust PTSD and honestly, having a scope puts you WAY ahead in getting a drop on someone.
Pro: Raiding
- Raiding is now offline/online and very similar to Rust. (they do have a Discord BOT that will alert you)
You can just chuck C4 onto a base and get in there. Thankfully, the base building was IMMENSELY improved. Once someone breaks a wall on anyone's base, there will be a "lightning" symbol that pops up for, I believe...15 minutes? That will give everyone an opportunity to 3rd party and make a score, so it's a pro/con.
Con:
- You can definitely feel the disparity between solo players and "Clans" or just groups in general. Current MAX "group" is 5. The base building was improved but still requires upkeep and a couple of hands on deck if you wanna survive for long. I'd advise just playing on a 30 day wipe server and enjoy the chaos. When playing on a server when it's dominated by only a handful of these groups; with a player count of only 50 (REALLY hope they can manage increasing this somehow) having 10% taken up from a single group doesn't always feel great.
Pro: Base Building
- They've done some great things with 1.0. Building a base is super easy - the only real HARD part is getting a door lock. You can craft these or buy from traders in safe zones. You spawn with a knife and lighter, cut down branches with knife and you can craft your base. Just be advised again of the door lock that's necessary.
Con:
- Brings me back to my previous point with "groups and clans". There is a disparity for sure in it's current patch. I understand there will always be dominating groups but honestly simply increasing player count could solve this. The map is HUGE and they finally added ground vehicles. Which are not that hard to come by.
Pro: HUGE MAP (no con)
- It's actually fun to run around and do stuff, you can find events through most of the map. They just added an expansion with an airfield and endgame loot.
Really enjoying it so far and would highly recommend trying it out if you're into Rust and old school Day Z(mod) or a previous player curious about what's happened so far.
Servers are thriving and the developer said basically: "We'll keep updating as long as the community wants to play".
So let's keep those numbers up and see what else they can bring to the table
Super fun game. Coming from someone that has enjoyed DayZ, Rust, and Tarkov, this has elements from all of them in a more casual setting that is still challenging. Has some bugs that they need to work out, but nothing game breaking so far. Also missing the ability to report players. Currently you have to take screenshots or provide video footage to their discord.
It's basically a bad graphic pubg clone with survival elements and bots, It was fun shooting bots for about an hour till i realized that that's literally all there is to do. I never found a single person and the whole time i was playing the server was chugging. Theres a few other issues, like the fact the guns are incredibly loud compared to the rest of the game, and whenever i skinned and animal they had no meat for me to eat.
This game is enjoyable for a few hours, but it doesn't bring anything particularly innovative to the table. The mechanics are functional, though they don't stand out as exceptional. The vehicles feel clunky and lack the fluidity you'd expect, sticking too firmly to the ground. The gunplay and AI are underwhelming, leaving much to be desired. There are plenty of other games that execute these systems more effectively.
Finally a new PvE game in this setting, logged in, 10 min later a random brainrot blocks the way out of a room unless I give him weapons, logged out.
Whole crew just bought this tonight and pounded 3 hours of gameplay and all stayed up way later than we normally do! This truly is DayZ/Rust for people with lives. Graphics are insanely good and runs so well. Getting 160 fps with zero drops at max settings with 7900 GRE at 1440p native. It is bonkers. Makes DayZ look so dated by comparison.
We look forward to this game growing and evolving with more varied biomes and more weapons/customization.
first 1 hour in
- loaded in to official and went north got ran over by a bike
-loaded in again i met two guys at a bridge
-they told me they can play guitar ask for a suggestion i gave them one
-one started playing and then i got shot in the head
10/10
There is a few reasons why I don't recommend this game and there are some positives about it as well.
Deadside is a mixture of Rust and Dayz, yet it lacks on both. In Dayz, there's wildlife, however if you kill it, you get meat that will last you several hours upon several hours of gameplay. With this game, you get only a few meat, you can only harvest it with a knife. Only, A. Knife. You can't use a fireaxe to chop the meat. Wolves provide 0 meat on harvesting. Only a head and pelt. The heads to each animal is essentially useless. The wildlife is very lackluster.
AI is a whole different issue, they know where you are all the time as soon as they spot you. They have some "memory" function that lasts maybe a couple of minutes, but in that couple of minutes, they know exactly where you are and will hunt you down, regardless if you just ran into a building or behind a wall. I'm not saying it's terrible but however they start shooting you even if you're head is a centimeter in a FOV.
Bunkers do exist in this game and I've managed to run into one myself. The turrets in there are completely bullshit. In a fraction of a second if they see any part of your body whether in their aiming range or not, they instantly shoot. It seems like in order to do bunkers, you have to farm for countless hours by either gathering enough grenades or carrying 1,000 rags to go in there and heal constantly. No offense, not in the mood either.
Vehicles aren't so bad, you can find motorcycles and jeeps. You will never get air time as it always stays on the ground no matter what. However it's not like dayz where if you hit a tree or tiny rock and you blow up and no longer have a vehicle.
This game is really like Rust in a progression sense, farming for countless hours just to upgrade shit and whatnot. Building is just like Rust, nowhere near like Dayz in any true form or shape. I have a job and I'm not going to quit it just to go fulltime Deadside so I don't get raided by the local pvp and raid hungry guy.
I really wish they would check and balance their game because it feels very underwelming and I don't think I can continue to play if it's just consistent grind and grind and grind and grind all the time. The player base isn't terrible, not every server is fully active like rust but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing either because who wants 50 people running around with shotguns that you just picked up when you just got in the game. Not particularly me.
I will complain that the inventory system is jank. I can't put an empty bag inside of my bag or inventory. Food and water deplete really quickly, much faster than Dayz and Rust combined. So you have to really be going out there and "farming" for food. Water isn't really an issue as there is wells and bottles you can pick up and then refill at wells just like Dayz. There's a lot of QOL stuff that could be added.
So overall, I just don't recommend the game unless it's 50% off, if I could refund it at 7 hours, I would, however, giving the game chance after chance, ended me up at 7 hours of playing time.
I bought this to play with my wife but had to refund it because your base decays when logged off, which is a hard pass for us. I'm just leaving this as a warning for those who don't like that mechanic, as it doesn't look like it will be changing anytime soon.
It's like Dayz but has a built in pve mode and is less realistic (which means no dying to drinking the infected water or giving yourself the wrong blood type)
man, its so close... like rust mixed with dayz. It's just too clunky - essentially a running simulator with awful ai and gunplay.
great concept - bad game.
I've always enjoyed this game; it's been a lot of fun. The new building system is fantastic, the vehicles are great, and the public test was awesome. However, I currently can't recommend it. If you have a base built, you can't even load into the game. If you're outside your base, everything works fine, but if you go to sleep inside, the game doesn't load properly, causing you to die during the loading time.
I believe this issue started with the 1.0 release. I've tried to load in for two days now, and it's just stuck on the loading screen. I've uninstalled, repaired, and even tried a different PC, but the problem persists.
I hope a patch comes soon to fix this issue.
Walking simulator paired with unrelenting griefing and horribly simple traders. It's impossible to do the boring quests you have the option of doing and if I could summarize the game in a sentence, it would be this
Spawn, run 5k bsing with your friends and then get sneak killed, rinse and repeat.
Good game. If you like DayZ, Miscreated, Rust, etc. this is a game for you.
Doesn't work on Linux because of battleye, uninstalled, and refunded. Looked like a fun game though, too bad.
Just started to play. I have over 6k hours in DayZ so these types of game are my cuppa tea. I like the feel of this soo far. Getting very good FPS and the game looks very nice. The AI are not very good so for you PVE players out there it might annoy you. But for PVP it feels just about right as you don't want a serious threat from AI and other players. The crafting looks pretty good. I have not tried the base building yet but have noticed that they don't seem to have triangle foundations? I could be wrong and maybe this will be added later. I think for building bases this is an essential addition to the game especially on PVP. I think the price of this game currently on sale at just under £17 is just about right. I do feel however that should they keep updating and improving the game it would be worth more. I would recommend this game to anyone out that that likes PVP, crafting and basebuilding.
i am one of the very early backers of this running simulator with millions of still existing, gamebreaking bugs. back in the days something with a glimpse of hope - today desillusioning: tiny dev team worked on weekends afterwork (when they had the mood to work) on this project over many years, leading to a not finished, unpolished, outdated and buggy product.
not recommended. you can waste some hours when the game will be for 5 Bucks at max.
After the 1.0 update the AI has been balanced a bit more. No more laser headshots through a bush from 300 yards away and there's plenty more improvements that make the game way more enjoyable, like vehicles, better bartering system, more travel points, better base building system. All positives right?
But then they want to be like Rust... Wtf are you doing?! Wipes every 4 weeks on PVP servers?? Why?! The beauty of this game was always being a more "militaristesque survival" game where you can hop on, shoot some people and/or npcs, do some missions and if you wanted to grind a bit, you had the bunkers and such. But now you need to rush everything on the first week or you get left behind, seriously? what a let down, if I wanted that type of grind, I would go to Rust, which funny enough is the reason many people stopped playing that game either so until they fix this, I won't recommend this game in this state.
it's like DayZ but with slightly better building than Rust & with PUBG Levels of loot. gunplay is a bit better than the clunky nightmare that is DayZ. fun game.
First time experience......
Spawns on PVE server falls in-love with the scenery, graphics absolutely stunning.
Proceeds to complete the starting challenges to get used to the game, some tips are just straight up awfully confusing. While others provide no benefit. On any server you will need to build a base within the first 10 minutes of playing. But sadly to actually lock your base, you need to find locks.
Now this wouldn't be a issue if you were able to say craft a makeshift one for the tutorial but you can not progress until then.
So on I trek in search of the illusive lock. I find a vast and i mean (VERY LARGE) amount of ammo. More than enough to start my own Spec ops team, so many weapons just laying about in odd places like. Docks, Gas stations, even in random cars or containers to open.
I continue my journey for locks for my 1x1 base when I hear a fellow survivor riding down the road on their bike.
Sadly we couldn't chat as there was some voice chat issues. So i waved hello and they dropped me some food, as a thank you i rewarded with a gas can i had found, I also had a spare just in-case i found a car or something my self.
We parted ways and not 20 even seconds later I found my very own bike. Over the moon I immediately filled up my new bike that has 100% quality, I start to think about potentially expanding to fit my new vehicle. Not far away I notice a large cluster of houses and think Im heading there NOW!!!
Once I arrived. I was greeted with the lock I had been looking for. So overjoyed I continued to loot when a player managed to sneak up-to my bike and ride off happily into the sunset. I proceeded to chase them down on foot, when it was too late to notice they was taking me into a trap. They lead me into NPCS who lit me up like a Christmas tree while I was tunnel focused on getting my bike back. I died.
I re-spawn. Can't select my sleeping bag. Random spawn it is then. Get insta killed not even 3 minutes later going somewhere im not ready for.
Overall rating from this. 11/10 Must play.
this game was great and I was a fan waiting for full release but after this full release you are fucked . U need to be an engineer to understand the base building system .... why change something that works to something broken
I backed this project in 2020 or 2021 and genuinely enjoyed my time with it during Early Access. Back then, I found a French server run by an amazing admin team (shoutout to the SACHEM team! ^^), who made my experience even better.
However, the development pace quickly became frustratingly slow. At times, we waited over six months for updates, which often turned out to be underwhelming. Some of my friends were convinced the game was on the verge of being abandoned by the developers. Eventually, I stopped playing but kept an eye on its progress from a distance.
Recently, I noticed the game climbing the Steam charts again, which brought it back to my attention. Unfortunately, after watching the trailer and the promotional "live" stream here on Steam, I realized I just can’t see myself getting back into it.
Don’t get me wrong—the additions in version 1.0, like land and water vehicles, fauna, the expanded map, natural medicine, and the day-night cycle, are all fantastic. But we needed those features back in 2021 or 2022 when the game still had momentum. Now, it feels like too little, too late. Moreover, it seems to be still lacking weather !
The game’s engine is outdated, and in 2024, we have titles like Grey Zone Warfare and Tarkov. While they don’t offer the exact same gameplay mechanics (survival, exploration, crafting, base building, raiding, hunting) or setting (a post-apocalyptic Russian open world), they hit similar satisfaction triggers for players. They’re far more visually appealing and provide equally, if not more, thrilling experiences compared to roaming the forests of DeadSide.
At this point, why would players of Rust or DayZ make the switch to DeadSide in 2024?
It just feels like a huge waste and a missed opportunity. The potential was there, but it wasn’t realized in time. It honestly brings me sorrow to see how things turned out.
I've waited so long for the game to add meaningful content to make the world feel more alive and also reduce the overwhelming brain dead gameplay where you are practically forced onto this game everyday just to keep your base from decaying which is a very stupid feature for a game that barely gets more than a 100 players a week. The worst part is the devs are so money hungry and greedy that you still have to PAY just to make a server with your friends. NEVER give money to devs that want your money just to play with your friends. My recommendation is to press the ignore button and let this game die like it deserves to.
Day Z for people like me who doesnt want to run around without a gun for 20 hours
Rust for people like me who doesnt want to hit trees with rocks for 20 hours and grind my life away
Fun PVP , good game. Weird its not more popular tbh!
Painfully generic. Nothing to set itself apart from all the other open world survival Unreal engine games out there. Pretty much is a modded DayZ server without zombies that is on Unreal engine instead. It has traders, random generated missions, and running.. lots of running. A lot has been added since I originally purchased and I thought there was room for potential, but with this being 1.0 I would say that my highest praise is that it didn't crash. It functions and maybe it will scratch the itch you have been looking for, but there are many games that do what this does better. Worth $10 at most.
I liked this game a lot when I got it. it was a great open-world survival shooter that's not as complicated as DayZ but not as simple as Rust.
And speaking of rust...
this game turned into rust, and nobody likes rust, so I can't recommend this to anyone.
Likes:
- A game with a small development team is STILL making improvements
- Mass updates that actually MAKE the game better
- Very good for the price to play
Dislikes:
- AI could use better mechanics (But of course I suspect this is being worked on)
- AI could attack more indiscriminately (Like Wolves, Bandits, Soldiers could attack eachother)
- Improvements on the variety of loot (And weapons modifications)
been playing for over a year this game. good game really it has potential, some things are missing for this game to be complete, other than the community. lets keep it growing?
Game has improved a lot since it was initially released in early access. I would recommend this game now that it is reaching v1.0 status.
Early access, the game has potential.
More and more updates are in "work in progress"
The game has added offline baseraid, which made it a "Rust" game now.
I would have recommended it. Though there's not any campaign. It's all online pvp or pve. And sadly there's long between updates.
I think it's completely dead for now as the name is given. Hope to see it making a comeback
Fun game to chill with people and mess around on.
the game is getting really good with this new update worth trying it out for sure but the game dose lack people in the us
Great game! Took over camp, looted camp. enemy respawn on camp, kill me on camp. uninstall trying to loot camp with shotgun from hunting cabin. 10/10 camps
I have about 4 hours in the public test servers now, and I'm impressed: For me, the cars work really good, and the motorbikes are not bad either. The map looks really good - okay, I miss a lot of tress, but the overall impression is nevertheless good to me.
I'm very hard in critique with this game - because I really like it a lot. If i wouldn't like it that much,I wouldn't care about things.
So, I'm really happy that I can say so many good things about the recent update ;)
One point is a porblem in my opinion: Base maintenance.
I like the idea, but for people who want to pause or can't play for a while, this is really a problem:
It was enough to just log in to keep your base. Now, one has not only to log in but to chop wood and manufacture planks to keep the base. So, if one for example wants to pause for a few weeks, he nevertheless has not only to log in, he has to play for a certain time.
spent $30 on this at launch, haven't played in a while i watch LoafDS on YouTube so i know the game has grown so much in a lot of different areas. i wish this game got more love, i'm happy for the devs for their progression of this game and how its evolved over the years. wishing your employees and game studio nothing but the best!!
Devs gave up on this. Servers are dead, menu's don't work properly. You have to hover like half an inch under something for it to register.
nice guns! fun fights with npcs and players... it's not pUBG yay.
4 years later and no, vehicles??
just people camping mission only like 5 full playable servers at a time not worth it

great bones for a good game, the devs seem to be invested pretty well into this project, would recommend if a hardcore survival is your type of thing
