One of best visual novels I've read
But so few people bought this game, that it still has a mark on steam page with "steam is learning about the game", after almost five years! This is a crime!
I will be honest: Untill this game, I had a prejudice toward non-japanese visual novels. I always thought they were worse than japanese ones. And their maximum level is "not bad". Because of it, I pushed this vn far in backlog. But due to some reasons, I've read it now. And I am very impressed.
There is recommend route order. First two routes are not that special. But next three are very good. I was totally invested. Time passed by in the blink of an eye while reading. And I got teary eyed during one particular scene at the end. I love when visual novels drive me to such strong emotions.
There is romance, but story doesn't focus on it. Don't expect something like dating sim.
Coffee play big part in the story. But you don't need to be coffee fan to enjoy this vn.
Nice soundtrack! Not very much songs, but some of it I will definetly add to my playlist. For example song called Caffeinated.
So, I am no more prejudiced toward non japanese visual novels.
Please buy this visual novel.
This title is a criminally underrated masterpiece. Caffeine not only presents a unique and enthralling world but also reignited my passion for coffee in a way I never imagined possible.
The game strikes a perfect balance in its storylines, offering a narrative that is both smooth and captivating. Here are my thoughts broken down into pros and cons:
Pros:
1. The author's profound understanding and love for coffee shine through, making it a delightful game aspect.
2. The world-building is exceptional, with compelling stories and rich lore.
3. The characters are well-developed and charismatic, especially the villain, who stands out brilliantly.
4. The humor, particularly the coffee puns, adds a delightful touch.
5. The endings are well-crafted, leaving lasting impressions.
6. The inclusion of economic and business elements, like the coffee auction, is both intriguing and enjoyable.
Cons:
1. Post-game, my Saeco Talea Ring's espresso just doesn't taste as good anymore.
2. Certain elements feel underdeveloped and could benefit from more detail, including world-building, international relations, character depth, and exploration of Victoria's internal journey.
3. The storyline involving the search for Taka's mother is somewhat underdeveloped, making the reunion scene less impactful than it could be.
Overall, Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy has quickly become one of my favorite novels. It's a must-try, not just for coffee enthusiasts but even for those who prefer tea =))
Why do more people not know of this visual novel
This is an underappreciated gem if I ever saw one. I've already written ~3800 words about it elsewhere, but to keep it brief, the game seems pretty silly at a glance. The premise is silly, the sprites look a bit off, homophones get mixed up semi-frequently, the voice acting is of mixed quality, and just play the opening sequence and try to make sense of what you're seeing, and more importantly, what you're *hearing*. And yet, the more I played, the more I was dragged along for the ride, and the more I realized that there was an immense amount of care and attention poured into not just the story and characters, but the setting and lore, too. I went into the game expecting silly mediocrity and instead found a diamond in the rough that will remain with me for many years to come.
Good game, would fly to Japan with a coffee terrorist again.
let me start by saying this game is utter cringe. COFFEEGASM. cringe
but nevertheless i still found myself enjoying it despite the fakest of fake british accents.
I came to know of this VN's existence solely because I'm an avid coffee consumer and enjoyer and I was expecting this to take the concept of "coffee is everything" to the next level in creative ways.
While the premise is fun and the abundance of coffee related trivia is relevant, I'm sad to say that there is nothing unique about it.
Simply put, I've read a gazillion visual novels like this in the past. This is the primary reason why I dont recommend it at the current pricetag. Secondly, I dont think its worth it for the story because it has been told a million times before but better.
In short, the protagonist gets isekai'd into "another world"(TM) which is all about coffee-making and coffee beans give people powers. There is a mystery involving the protagonist's mother missing, which is resolved in a pretty decent way.
However, that's all there is to it. The story arcs are ridden with frivolous anime tropes that the industry regurgitates on a regular basis, to the point that I knew what would have happened way before the game told me. As a matter of fact, I have been skipping entire dialogue boxes with fluff and nothings just to get to the point which was inevitably what I had foreseen. With this I dont want to say that I am some kind of genius, on the contrary, I am simply stating that this novel is very predictable and formulaic. Which is also why I dont really care for finishing more routes.
The writing is passable. Sometimes it seems as though it has been written by a non-English speaker, other times it feels like its been writte by someone very young. Either way, its serviceable and gets all points across but it is not entirely enjoyable. I would say its amateurish, although I'm not familiar with them that's just how it seems to me. Some descriptions felt like they've been "heavily inspired", shall we say, by other works.
The disclamer at the start of the game made me chuckle. I assume its been made for laughs.
Now, the coffee. If you're expecting it to be anything more than "magic", then I'm afraid to say that you are in the wrong. Coffee ...is just magic. That's it.
Characters are valking stereotypical anime tropes, some have Japanese names with some Japanese themed clothing and descriptions. There's the princess with a heart of gold, the tsundere, the childhood friend type, you name it. They're all there. Sometimes I have a feeling that they know they've been written like that, because the novel doesnt shy away from breaking the 4th wall a lot with jokes that dont make you luagh.
The artstyle and general presentation at the very least is pretty good. The CGs have their fair share of detail, the lighting is well used and facial expressions convey exactly what's needed, with few exceptions where noses and hands look a bit weird but never too much. The artist clearly prefers to draw females rather than males and they dont have much experience with victorian clothing.
The English VA is appreciated but... no, sorry. The voices were all either too old for the role or not very much into it. On this note, I would like to address the fact that Oceane's VA slider doesnt work.
If you're really young and there is a chance that this might be your first victorian-themed VN, Caffeine could be a good starting point provided that you'd search for more in the future and that the pricetag doesnt exceed 8-10$.
Really great game on steam! Played demo before and I couldn't just wait for it to come out, you guys did a really great job, looking out for some more similar games from you in the future, or some DLCs for this one!
A really long visual novel. I needed over twenty hours for one playthrough.
Hence I bonded with the characters :)
I like Coffee, Girls and Steampunk, so the game sounded very interesting.
Indeed, it was a nice story with some mystery-stuff and cute drawings.
Coffee! ( In all seriousness it's a pretty good visual novel and a fantastic story) I feel like this visual novel is on par with Crystalline which is one of my favourite visual novels that I have read. It also reminds me of Spice and Wolf. When I heard the opening song of this Visual Novel I knew I was going to be in for a treat. I loved the soundtrack of this visual novel and the art was fantastic. This Visual Novel also has a lot of good emotional moments and there are not a lot of visual novels that I could say made me feel moved in a emotional way before. The only thing about this visual novel is that it is a shame this visual novel wasn't fully voiced but it doesn't stop it from being a really good visual novel and story.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxwcQ1dapw8
Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy is a story about finding love and happiness in a steampunk Victorian world, where coffee is the king and god.
The main protagonist is Taka, the son of Taka coffee shop owners, who mysteriously lost his mother when he was 6 and trying to find what happened to her. He drinks strange coffee on a plane and falls off the plane and suddenly finds himself in Victoria city in front of "Taka Coffe House".
The story is a sci-fi and fantasy mix, it is a little bit unusual, but still very interesting (coffee magic is fun).
The world is well-written with both magic and steam machines coexisting. There are a lot of texts in the game, the authors tried to describe almost every aspect of Victoria city. A lot of attention in game is paid to its political, economic and social state with a great influence of COFFEE. Coffee is the core engine of the Victoria and it's citizens, so be ready to learn a lot of fun facts about coffee during your journey.
The visual part of the game is also very good - locations and characters are perfectly drawn and all sprites and CG's are animated. All 4 potential love interests have their own unique style and temper, with their own background and fascinating story for you to discover. Moreover, every girl has her own voice, which is very great if you ask me. The voice acting is very nice, all the characters seem lively and passionate. The music also is pretty well written - it is lovely and never ruin the mood.
The story is very rich for choices and the future of Taka is up to you - you can choose the way your hero uncover the secrets of Taka family and define his future love. Overall, i really enjoyed playing it and i think it's fun and you' ll like it as well.
This VN greatly exceeded my expectations. I thought I was in for standard dating sim memes with a steampunk theme. What I got instead was an actual story with many interesting and intertwining threads, with a few dating sim memes mixed in.
The soundtrack was alright, it wasn't very memorable but it set the mood for each scene.
I had some technical issues which could only be resolved by turning off video sprites although the dev seems to be pretty quick with respect to patching these up.
Overall, this game feels like a hidden gem I would highly recommend.
What happens if you drink too much coffee? Oh, you'll learn about it from this visual story. And I keep leaning on beer, but it's useless. We have to switch to coffee.
It's sarcasm.
A story for coffee lovers from coffee lovers. Coffee is the most common word in this text. I won’t do spoilers anymore.
Beautifully painted. History on the fan. Not so bad. Just for the fan. But an interesting world was invented. I liked this idea.
I do not regret the purchase. I recommend.
However, here is what I want to say. My Norton Antivirus categorically refused to allow me to run this game and immediately deleted all executable files. In this case, I started the demo version without any problems before deciding to purchase the game. I had to turn off the antivirus and run the game in the sandbox in order to play it. It seems to me that this is not right. The developer must do something about it.
Very unique game with an awesome story, world and soundtrack . The art is very nice , the lore and politics of the game are very intriguing with a well thought out structure .I have very few problems with the game, ( namely the main protagonist was a bit annoying at times ) Eliza and Oceane are my favorite routes and I was pleased with the endings and unexpected twists throughout the game. It was a joy to replay the game and pick up on things that you may have missed on previous play throughs. Very underrated game from what I can see , with tons of replay value and a very addicting game to go through with hours upon hours of enjoyment. One of my favorite visual novels as of finishing the game.
Ok so first off let me say I really enjoyed this visual novel but i have to start of with a gripe. I'm really tired of the useless main character trope and this visual novel definately uses it. If you like your protagonist to actually do something besides be a nice guy you wont get that in this story. But...aside from that I found this Visual Novel to be fantastic. The story was great even though it was working with a fairly silly premise. It also kept suprising me, I didn't have any clue about was was going to happen next. The characters and thier backstories were intresting and entertaining. And I love the fantasy/ steampunk mix of the world it takes place in. I definately enjoyed this visual novel. Just next time...maybe give me a character that actually does something and doesnt COMPLETELY rely on everyone else?
nice storyline , not yet finished but love it
The game is nice, decent story and good music background, however there are still some bug in the animation, the animation stop before the sentence finish, and sometime there is no voice at all. What I would suggest is try to shortening the coffee "fun facts" because for someone who does not care of coffee it is a real chore to click through all the coffee trivia.
Editing: I switch this review in to not recommending since there is an scenario that is written for the purpose of the writers ideology. "Gender neutral" is idiotic, their is plural and for s.o you don't know their gender, and "Mx" is not a thing.
If anyone can stomach this stupid ideology, feel free to buy it. If not, it is an easy pass.
I was one of this game's Kickstarter backers; I pledged and then paid AU$15, which is approximately US$11.
I've never actually written a Steam review of a game before; this will be my first Steam review. Please keep in mind that I am not a professional critic or reviewer; I'm just a player, so I won't have quite the technical eye you might see in other reviews.
And I absolutely love this game! If you're an aficionado of visual novels, or an aficionado of coffee, I strongly recommend this game.
For one thing, the developers have really put a lot of work into lore and world-building; the fantasy city of Victoria has a LOT of detail put into its politics, its caffeine-based religion and magical powers, etc.
For another thing, the romance options for the protagonist are attractive and interesting, and the voice actresses have clearly put a lot of work into making them feel alive. Eliza sounds appropriately charming, Alice sounds appropriately cute, Mel sounds appropriately go-getter and charming, and Oceane sounds appropriately serious and no-nonsense. (My favorite characters are Eliza and Alice, but Mel and Oceane will surely appeal to other players.)
Plus, each lady's route also contains certain twists and reveals you don't get on the other routes, so there's more motivation to play each route at least once. (At the time of this writing, the game is in Early Access, so only Eliza's, Mel's, and Oceane's routes have been completed; Alice's route will be released later.)
The only technical issue is that the "animated sprites" are not always well-implemented; the characters' mouths sometimes stop moving before the line is finished. But the sprites are great other than that!
The music is also very fitting, there's fantasy-esque music for the more pastoral segments of the story, there's rock music for coffee duels like the one you see in the prologue, etc.
Overall, I think this game is very charming, and I say this as someone who has played a lot of visual novels. I heavily recommend this game!
This game is absolutely wacky..... Now with that being said I've been really enjoying playing this game and exploring its world. It takes place in an alternate world than the one we find ourselves in, and takes a good look on whats different while also staying on track in the story. On a side note, I'm a history buff so it was very fun to hear what happened to the USA and Australia in this timeline. There were multiple cases where I'm on the edge of my seat because the twist and turns this game takes leaves you wanting to see what happens next. Also there are multiple cases, that because of the events within the game I was genuinely hurt by what was happening and was found with issues that were unexpectedly difficult. I did not expect this game to have all of this in, and while not completely done, the voice acting that is in the game is top notch and you could feel the emotions. The writing especially in sad points of the game really made me feel for the main character in ways I didn't expect. In conclusion I would go as far as to say this is up there in my favorite visual novels ever.
First I have to say;
I really don't like coffee. Neither the taste, or the smell. I don't know anything about coffee, and I am not interested in brewing it, or anything related to coffee.
But I really like this game!
This review is for the early access version. I didn't play it all the way trough yet, but since there aren't any other reviews I wanrted to give out an impression. I gonna update it as soon as the full version of it is released.
The story is very interesting, (although it revolves a lot around coffee), it has a pleasant pace. It's nice to have another VN whose corestory is not about romance.
And it is SO well written. SO SO well!
I already played a lot of visual novels and rarely I have read such an almost poetic style. The story got me hooked right from the start.
But bring a lot of time, this VN isn't done in a few hours, even if you are a fast reader.
The characters are very likeable. Not your often seen "aaah, but seenpai, I am uuugly" etc.
The Artstyle is amazing, the characters are moving while talking and they are also voiced.
Not a 100% convinced of the choices. There are a LOT of them, which is great. But sometimes they don't really matter because one choice just leads to another of the ones you could choose from. But I have seen a lot worse from other games.
So far the devs did an amazing job on this game, you can see that they put a lot of work into it, and I am very curious to see what is yet to come.
I can totally recommend Caffeine at it's current early access state, every fan of VN with a creative well written story and loveable characters should check it out :)
