there are some things keeping this from being a 10/10 game such as the party chat conversations but outside that the game is handled very well to both be 'updated' as well as with the pixel art aesthetic for an rpg.

Great mix between retro feel and modern capabilities. Great idea combining stories from all of the different characters... reminds me of a FF6 idea taken to 11.
A great game with solid gameplay and insanely good artstyle. So many abilities and skills to choose from and a wide variety of enemies. The biggest let down for me personally would be the severe pacing issue when moving from one chapter to another, earlier levels are fine but turns into a grind fest towards the end, used a mod to level up fast. Having said that its still and insanely good game, heard 2 fixes alot of the issues, so super hyped to play that next
An amazing game that I'm still playing, even though I've poured 90+ hours into it. As a big fan of classic JRPGS (specifically FFVI), this feels like that era, but more. Every character feels real with depth, and the gameplay mechanics + boost + path actions are so unique that I feel drawn to all of them. Great writing, great music, overall great everything despite standing on the shoulders of the giants that came before it.
A must-play for any JRPG fan stuck in the past like me.
absolutely recommend if your into classic traveling jrpg's that give you a sense of adventure and doesnt try to be something its not. it all just works. combat is balanced and when you find your new team mates / friends ( wich you will along the way ) the balncing system seems to level them up closer to your other characters main level. so like say your main character is so over leveled your worried about leaving the new character you meat behind. it seems to me that over time the system will more or less fix itself. so its accessible but dont worry bosses are very difficult if you choose not to over level. characters are a bit tropy but if you plays alot of jrpg's your not complaining. i chose H'aanit for my main and first character and she is a great animal taming straight forward character. but yeah music is what you would expect for squeenix and the voice acting is perfect to me and it is absolutely perfect for steam deck when limiting to 8-10 whats when you a battery saving game on a long flight or ride ... with a battery bank lol. because steam deck thats why. other wise hope that helps !
fun jrpg with fun and engaging combat system
octopath travler is with out a great game i recomend this game because its fun and ingageing
My cons from the completionist's perspective:
- Galdera's boss fight is very hard and for some reason there is no save station in the last dungeon. So in order to retry him, you have to beat another 8 hard bosses first to open the passage. Very time consuming and very disappointing when you fail on the last boss (each try takes ~2 hours). In addition to this, you have to use all 8 characters in that fight, so you have to go and grind AGAIN to make them all somewhat ready. Grind is not fun.
- Speedrun achievement in jrpg? Like who's idea was that? How in the world was it approved?
- A lot of complicated achievements related to different types of collectible, while the game does not provide you with any ingame tools to trace your progress (not even a bestiary?). In addition, some of them are easily missable.
I'm only ~25ish hours in, but dare I say this is the best RPG I've ever played?
It really has that old school JRPG feel to it, akin to Breath of Fire or Final Fantasy VI.
Combat is good, progress feels rewarding. The stories are great.
If there's anything I don't like about it, is it's a bit too scripted and not enough of the open-world feel. Typically RPGs like this have an openish world, barricaded by enemy levels - which this game does as well, but instead of open world it's more like corridors into larger areas. I'm guessing they did this because it's using the Unreal engine vs Unity, but I could be talking out my ass - it's just what it feels like. I'm sure the Unreal engine allowed for a lot of the submersive feelings I'm experiencing, vs a traditional top down rpg. The isometric
Other than that, I'm having a blast and I would highly recommend this game for anyone who loves old school SNES RPGs.
Perfect game if you're itching for a grind game especially in higher difficulties. Jobs are fun and system is complex enough to give the same feel as FFV.
Only thing that I did not expect was how separated the stories are with the characters. I guess it will be too hard to implement considering the order in getting the characters can be varying. Overall, most of the arcs are great.
For me, it's the best RPG since Chrono Trigger and has become my favorite game EVER. The characters' stories are just so good and they complement one another so well. I don't even know why there isn't a book yet. Also, the world and scenarios are really nice. The music is AWESOME. And it's all so peaceful ! It's so good that it clearly makes me look like a child talking about it. But what can I say? Honestly, this game was made to be loved. It makes me super nostalgic, sending me back to waaaay back then, when I was still a kid at home...
Reminiscent of old jrpgs but with a mountain of dialogue right off the bat.
A solid JRPG with some wired story choices. There is no central story. Character's stories are disjointed. if Red Dead Redemption is a novel, this game is a short story anthology. The problem is the tone of the individual character stories are too varied. One is dark with demons, blood magic, and Armageddon. Another is a borderline feel-good about the true treasure in life. A third is a low-stakes medical drama.
The gamplay is solid. if you have ever played some of the early final fantasy games, or sea of stars, you will be right at home.
i'd give it a 7/10. Combat and locations are a plus but the story decissions and grinding drags it down.
The good
* Fun combat
* Varied locations
* The stories are solid.
The bad
* The story tone of the characters is too varied. some are dark, others are almost feel-good
* To much grinding to get character's strong enough.
* The dialogue is boring at times. Fortunatly it's skippable.
* Some of the stories lack stakes
I was looking for an RPG I could just pick up casually. This one fit what I was looking for. Loot, old school format, simple combat, room for min/maxxing or custom builds. My only complaint is that the weapons/armor are all static stats. I would have liked a randomized loot element for stat distribution.
This game started out fun but became very repetitive. Plus the back story given for each character moves at a snails pace. It is told slowly and completely takes you out of game play. I got bored and don't plan on coming back
Played tons of RPG/JRPG this is one of those that I had to drop. I was thinking that it would get better over time but it doesn't. It doesn't respect your time. The character don't reflect on each others stories makes it a huge turn off from the game alone. Style over substance.
this game is gas!!! i feel like im with my homies and its 2007 school just finished, its friday, and we started the walk to my house to play some mf halo 3 and along the way someone would spark up a reggie joint while we walked in the storm ditches trying to figure out what street we were at. the weed was mids but the adventure was incredible. i recommend this one its a banger.
i played mostly on switch
gameplay and visuals are really good but the story is absolute trash and the structure of the game (how dungeons and story is paced throughout the game) is done really poorly
I CAN'T BELIEVE I NEVER REVIEWED THIS??? god. octopath traveler is one of my favourite games ever made genuinely. it helped me through one of the most depressed parts of my life its so so dear to me. i highly recommend it
Octopath Traveler was a really fun game to play that has 8 mini adventures/heros to explore with clever lore that links them together in the end game content. The gameplay of the battles is where I feel the best part of the game lays, with clever builds needed and rotations of heros. Other reviews I've noticed have mentioned they get lost or forget about the hero stories with there being 8 in the game but I never came across this myself. The only issue I feel with the story is the repetitiveness of the stories, as in "oh this is the person this time to be evil and back stab you".
For the achievement hunters, the game has a few missable items which I was lucky to have collected on my first play through, which meant not having to do a whole second proper play through which would have pushed my total time of 100% over the 200 hours mark. I really hate speed runs but it was fun to learn and play the game in a different aspect. The game has no check list option for some of the achievements which meant I had to print off lists to keep track where clearing up the game after the main story.
Overall I give this game a 7/10. The lack of story depth and repetitiveness of chapters with all the heros made the game feel abit grindy in places, but the battles itself are really fun and enjoyable to play with good end game content to explore :)
good game
Finally got around to playing this. Wish I had played much earlier. Engaging combat, exploration, fun game to grind. Engaging with townspeople is a blast.
My play through is like 20 hours in and I'm still less than half way through the game just fighting and exploring.
This is the game that made me the man I am today. Nishiki's music singlehandedly change the direction of my profession and interests. Fantastic JRPG with a turn-based gimmick that makes a potentially stale combat style very fresh and interesting. No longer the old "buff and do damage" but you have to consider action economy and also random synergies that may just break the game in half, which are synergies basically required to survive several later encounters. An RPG masterpiece only bested by it's sequel.
A classic JRPG, Nice graphics and well written story so far!
One of the best games Ive ever played , every single character story could have been its own game.
And we get 8 !
Soundtrack, characters, story, fights, everything top.
Thank you for this legendary game.
P.S. The endboss is so crazy , I was shaking during the fight XD
Great game! I played this last January but forgot to put a review.
After a few months I would still say it was a good experience so give it a go, I'm currently playing OT2 and there was a lot improved from OT1, once you are done here give OT2 a try.
8/10 experience.
I'm not a big fan of this type of game.
But this game hit different with 12 different job that can be used in game.
But give big answer to yourself again if you interested to buy this game cause this last bos fight make me crazy to play it.
good game
not finished yet
very much a 'pick up, put down' kinda game in that you'll probably take short breaks before coming back to it
if turn based is what you crave
Great turn-based RPG. I'm not a fan of this genre, but the graphics, soundtrack, and sound design for the game is incredible. The 2D3D vibe is intriguing throughoug all the time I played the game.
Did I enjoy this game? In the end, kind of yes. Would I recommend it? Not really.
My experience with the game was like a sinusoid. Sometimes, I was having fun with the combat, with some stories, side quests, discovery of new skills or finding out usage for some skills I got early (that seemed useless earlier). And at other times, I had issues with outdated mechanics, hollowed, blurred environments, discrepancy between narrative and gameplay, awful amount of grind and repetitive, formulaic gameplay.
The game gets boring quite fast because of its formulaic structure of story and side quests. Also, grinding is a problem. I think EXP should be acquired much faster. Alternatively, make unused characters get half or 1/3rd of EXP.
On the positive side - later chapters of the characters’ stories get interesting. There are some plot twists and turns to keep a player interested. It’s also very good how all those stories revolve around a certain topic/thing. Some more, some less, but it’s nice to see that there’s a reason, fate even, that those characters are travelling together.
Not a complete coincidence >.>
In later parts of the game you access ultimate skills of classes and it can change a lot. Every character can have a second class. There are 8 basic and 4 advanced ones (accessible in the late game) so there are many things to experiment with in combat. Unfortunately those things take time and a lot of grind.
One awfully big sin of the game is lack of party interactions in the game. They exist, but you have to really go out of your way to get some in this game. It’s sad, because this kind of games’s one of the strongest points is exactly that. Group of characters with different values, stories, morals and backgrounds come together to accomplish a shared goal. Some characters like each other, some don’t. Some love each other, some despise each other. Sometimes there are betrayals in the group, etc. Here, there’s nothing like that.
EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER’S STORY CHAPTER is about a single character. When you progress as the character there are scarce party interactions along the way, but they are too short and honestly quite hollow (they don’t have any impact on the story). Narrative in those chapters tells you that only one character (the one story is about) is doing things, but you still travel as a party, you still fight as a party and afterwards NPCs even thank YOUR PARTY for help, instead of a single character. It feels like whenever a cutscene happens during a story chapter, the main character asks other party members to go out of the room for a minute.
Why is it like that? In my opinion, because then, it’s much easier to write certain plot points and plot twists during a character’s story. Some of the twists wouldn’t have happened if there had been at least one other person in the room. It’s painful sometimes, that you are forced to turn your brain off. Otherwise the story doesn’t make any sense.
By the way, I mentioned that every story revolves around a certain thing/topic. Sadly, even those small interactions between party members are not dynamic and there aren't any interactions like “Hey, remember when we did my last story chapter. Villains were also talking about the same thing” or sth like that, idk. Anything really.
Honestly, the game should give you more information openly about it and what happened around it before the whole group departed on their quests. In my opinion, it’s the best of the game’s writing, but it’s hard to find information about it for a casual player. Unless the player gets into reading information about some late game bosses on the OT wiki ._.
At the end of the day, I spent far too much time in this game. Over 65 hours (in-game timer) and I have to admit that I had my share of fun, mainly with combat. It’s just a pity that I had to put so much of my time into the game for it to become interesting and exciting. I was debating with myself all the time whether I like this game or not. In the end, I chose to label this review as a positive one.
I think it’s a fine game, like a 6/10. I really, really wanted to like this game. Unfortunately I can’t give this game more v.v
one of the best turn based games ive played in yeeeeeeeeeeeeears. a solid 8-9/10
It seems a little tedious, having 8 different characters and storylines, and for some of them their first chapter is eh, or their voice acting is eh. But most of them really shine in one way or another, and after getting all 8 characters and completing the "inner ring", I realized how much game there is and I am so excited to keep playing.
Fantastic story telling and graphics. 10/10 must-play for any RPG game enthusiast out there.
Great game all around
I don't really play games like this, but I saw the style and art of the game and had to get it.
Was not disappointed.
good open world rpg
OCTOPATH TRAVELER is a gem of a game that merges classic RPG elements with a fresh, heartfelt approach. The storytelling is where it truly shines, with each of the eight characters having a unique narrative arc that is deeply emotional and relatable. From tales of vengeance and redemption to self-discovery and duty, each journey feels personal, almost like reading eight beautiful novellas brought to life through stunning visuals and dialogue.
Having fully completed this game, all the way to the extremely challenging True Final Boss fight, I can say the journey has been nothing short of memorable. Every battle, side quest, and hidden story moment pulled me deeper into its world, making it an experience I won’t forget.
The combat system is incredible, giving turn-based strategy a fresh twist with a “break” and “boost” mechanic that keeps battles engaging and rewarding. Visually, the game is an absolute masterpiece, blending retro 16-bit charm with HD-2D environments that feel lush and immersive. Every town, forest, and dungeon is a visual feast, with meticulous attention to detail that makes the world feel both vast and intimate.
What sets OCTOPATH TRAVELER apart is its genuine emotional depth. The game doesn’t shy away from exploring heavy themes, and it handles each one with maturity, making each character’s journey truly unforgettable. It's a story-driven game with plenty of heart, a soundtrack that elevates every scene, and gameplay that stays fresh from start to finish.
For anyone who loves a rich, story-heavy RPG that respects both old and new gaming sensibilities, OCTOPATH TRAVELER is an absolute must-play. It’s an unforgettable experience and an easy 10/10 — and now my journey continues with OCTOPATH TRAVELER 2!!!
Octopath
Traveller
the spiritual successor of ff2 & 3. hopefully this trend of good FF games continues.
Was real and fun for all my viewers and i spent most of my time grinding so it was just as i like it.
You can steal a candy from Grandpa.
TL:DR: OId-school inspired RPG - In every sense. Very reminiscent of FF6. This game has a lot of pieces to it that are more of a grind than they need to be, and story bits that are more dragged out than they should be, but if you grew up playing and loving Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy, you will enjoy this title.
A Fantastic Journey in a vividly painted world. I love this Game
This is a well crafted RPG. The graphics took a while for me to learn to love and I was initally skeptical of the whole 8 protagonists choose-your own adventure structure. I was wrong, this ended up being a sleeper gem for me and an absolute blast. Each chapter takes 1-2 hours to complete so it's great for a short evening quest before bed. The battle system is simple to learn but deep in complexity without feeling overwhelming.
If you like turn-based RPGs, this is worth picking up or giving as a gift.
I am looking forward to octopath traveler 2 once I finish this.
i love you, thank you for making this game
I actually had this game on my Ninetendo switch before. I Had the Disc on the living room dresser, by mistake it fell on the floor. My Dog bit the Disc in the span of 1.5 seconds touched ground and when i wanted to try if it would still work it read, 'Unable to read disc' or something similar after. Yeah that sucked but i liked the game and now that i am older and have money and work i bought it again and its aweosome but its weird to play on Mouse and Keyboard so i recommend a Controller (Switch Controller).
Mechanically it is a decent jRPG, but the writing lacks depth and instead of a signle good story you get 8 independent boring stories. Unless you are very eager for a lot if disconnected "exciting" quests like buying an item and then selling it again to help one of your characters to become a merchant or visiting 3 different churches (which is pretty much the full story of another of the 8 characters) don't bother with this game...
I mean, even the NPCs seem to be living much more exciting lives. One of them had a dream that lead her to a dragon egg which she now tries to hatch. Why can we not play her instead of 8 random strangers? -.-
(yeah, yeah I'm sure it all gets tied together in the end - but I've given it enough time to show me anything in that direction and there is nothing of interest so far...)
Fun: The game is a fantastic blend of classic JRPG elements with a fresh, modern twist. Each character’s unique story and abilities make every playthrough feel different, keeping the experience fun and exciting.
Holding You to the Game: The deep, turn-based combat system and branching storylines keep you hooked. The eight characters’ individual journeys intertwine, offering hours of content and keeping you invested in discovering how their stories connect.
Many Enemies to See: From standard foes to massive bosses, there’s a wide variety of enemies to battle. Each encounter feels strategic, requiring you to think carefully about your character’s skills and party setup.
Nice Scenario: The beautiful, HD-2D art style and well-written stories create a captivating world. Each character’s path feels rich with lore, and the world itself is full of charm, drawing you in with every step of the journey.
Extra Depth: The unique "Path Actions" allow you to interact with NPCs in various ways, adding a layer of depth to exploration and character interaction that keeps the game engaging beyond just combat.
