Story
After the death of his mother, Tomoya Okazaki—a guarded delinquent student at Hikarizaka High School—struggles to not only make sense of the abusive relationship he has with his alcoholic father, but also find meaning in his life. While on his way to class one morning, he meets a mystifying girl named Nagisa. She is a delinquent like him, but only because she is repeating her senior year, unlike the perpetually tardy Okazaki. From their brief encounter, Nagisa decides they should be friends, and enlists Tomoya's help to revive the school drama club. Not being busy in any way, he decides to join in. Along the way, the two make friends with many other students and try to find both solace and belonging in their endeavors.New Features

Read every route up to After Story so far. I didn't expect to enjoy this experience as much as I did. I got this game on sale for around 80 polish zloty (20 usd?) since "oh it's a Key game, I'll likely play it soon anyway" AND THEN I GOT HOOKED.
This is the first time I've cared about a visual novel so much to the point of needing to 100% it. Some routes are not perfect in my opinion, but I can't hate any of the characters. They're all lovable in their own way. I can't wait to see what After Story brings me. Watch the anime adaptation after reading this for a complete experience. You will never be the same after this.
watched the anime, loved it, iconic, will play the game fully in the future. i do love how it goes more in depth on the characters and the story than the anime, but i havent played this fully, so apologies for not giving a full review. iconic vpn, if you have the patience for it, play it.
Masterpiece, that’s all I wanted to say. An evergreen classic, beautiful soundtracks, emotional content, beautiful characters that are well written. And of course the most kind and beautiful girl Tomoyo<3
i cried a lot
Goated
Essential VN for drama lovers.
--MY ROUTE RANKINGS--
Of course Nagisa has the best story in all of them.
For second place I would say Kotomi's route. Club activities and the story of her was fun (in drama aspect too)
Can't realy decide on third place, Fuko and Kyou's route were equally fun. (not gonna mention Ryou because Kyou's route mostly contained Ryou)
Rest of the routes are good too but I'm not gonna rank them. (And I can't say "I liked this route least", because all routes were fun)
clannad is the best
Excellent story, a long one, but well worth the time
This read made me feel feelings I long forgotten. The only novel that managed to do it before was Everlasting Summer
✔️ Played on Steam Deck, it works fine (30/10/2024). 'R2/A' button to advance text and touchscreen for the menu.
It is a good read overall, although some of the routes felt incredibly long and dragging. Actually, there's no in between for the routes: they are either nice and emotional or boring as hell. Although I found Afterstory quite... interesting there's too much drama on it to my taste, to the point it becomes a bit ridiculous. It's just not my cup of tea, as I've heard it's a huge tearjerker for some people. I like how every character goes through different struggles in their daily life, some of them pretty relatable.
Clannad is a weird VN to me, because it manages to have so many high and low points at the same time. A big part of it is made up of a very hit-or-miss slice of life story and I was sometimes confused why it has the high rating it does. Then once you have managed to see all of the slice of life things (and probably have had to find a guide online to achieve that) you finally reach the after story, which deserves all the praise it gets.
In the end I would definitely recommend Clannad to everyone, but be aware that you will have to read a lot before getting to the more impactful moments.
Playing Clannad was a long journey. I laughed with the characters, cried with them. It was the greatest visual novel I've ever played.
The story is very deep, even more so than the anime. There are many choices to make between routes, and it's a great adventure trying to get the good ending in each one.
Nothing I say with my own words can properly do Clannad justice, if i'm being honest. Over the years, I've moved Clannad around in the top of my favorite pieces of media ever, sometimes wondering if it really was still even my #1 as things like Little Busters, or Summer Pockets came around that I thought could possibly contend with it for the position as my favorite piece of media ever made. But after experiencing this story again, I can confidently say that no matter what comes in the future, nothing will ever take Clannad down from the rank of my favorite thing ever.
Just experiencing it in it's entirety again feels like it's taken me straight back to how I felt after reading and watching it for the first time in high school, and all those emotions from nearly 3 years ago have come back in full force, all the sadness, the joy, the despair, every last bit of it feels like its come back to stay this time. No more questions in my mind, at least. Genuinely every. little. thing. about this story feels like it was tailor made to be exactly what is special to me in a story. Whether that be characters like Nagisa, who I can always look back on and use their positivity to help carry me out of the depths of despair, or be it characters like Akio or Tomoya who no matter the situation, I feel like I can always think back on them and use them as something to help propel me forward when I feel like I can't go on anymore, there's always something like that in Clannad that I can look back on and use as a sort of inner strength for myself during any type of tough time I may encounter in the future.
Back when I first read Clannad, my relationship with my parents was on a steady decline, I felt like I barely had anything to look forward to, it felt like I was just a wandering lost soul, looking for something, anything to grab on to, and Clannad was what saved me from that. Seeing the Furukawas and the others later on made me realize that there's always something to live for, to believe in that light at the end of the tunnel and keep on living. My outlook on life as a whole completely changed after Clannad, much like the very first scene -- It felt like the color had been restored to my life, made me realize that even if I couldn't realize why at the time, that life is worth living, and I feel as if I can truly appreciate that with where I am at in life right now. Clannad is a perfect story about familial bonds, about growing up, about change, second to none. As someone who fears that change, it hits extremely close to home, but simultaneously makes me undescribably happy with the beautiful way it tells that story, and those messages.
I will never forget this story, nor will it ever not be my favorite, and most precious tale of all time, ever again. I feel like I can hit the ground running once more, even if painful things are to come. Thank you, to everyone who brought this masterpiece to life, because i know for certain that in doing so, you set my life on a path that i can feel confident in walking on.
Clannad goes beyond the "happily ever after" ending and gives a very honest and real portrayal of early adulthood, and a very honest and real portrayal of the things that can go wrong.
It hurt quite a lot.
100% good game, would recommend. give it some time, and it gets really emotional.
Achingly beautiful.
Nagisa best girl
好玩
i'd watched the series before playing the game, and i already loved the story, so naturally im having lots of fun playing the game. i only started a few days ago (i know the good part is most likely later in the game) but its still great right now. definitely recommend playing
69 hours nice, also wtf 69 hours
i cried at least 15 times
Magnifico!
What I bought just thinking it would be a wholesome time-waster, ended up gripping me more than I imagined. I also cried more than I liked to admit, and I'm not just talking about tears rolling down my eyes. I mean the ugly cry you want no one to see. Especially during a certain scene near the end, those who know, know. However, it's not all waterworks, there we also a lot of funny moments sprinkled throughout as well, ...and some sus moments as anime goes.
Worth spending $25 (I got it on sale) and 75 hours worth of your time to experience this masterpiece in full. Now time for me to watch the show and cry all over again.
Sunohara is PEAK bro character.
only 3 hours in and i already love this and want to read other visual novels...
cried. vn is the best form of media. i don't cry in other media
.·´¯`(>▂<)´¯`·.
Play this if you are a masochist that wants to cry 100 times in one playthrough.... 11/10!!!
Furukawa bakery
And 5 minutes later....
Akio : Nagisa where are you going?
Nagisa: I had to throw something
Akio: I bet it is Sanae's bread
Nagisa: But how did you know?????
Akio: I know everything.. I'm your dad. Also who would like those donut debo.... (Suddenly)
Sanae: Oh I get it now... My home made pastries are nothing but a waste??? (Watashi no pan wa...) (Runs outside)
Akio: No, I love your bread ( Stuffs some of her bread in his mouth).... (ORE WA DAISUKI DAAAAAA) SANAE!!!! (Chases after her)
10 Sanae buns out of 10
I don’t think my words can do this one justice. I’m not sure I’ll provide any insight someone else hasn’t already provided before. But for how much this game moved me, and just made me understand, I need to try.
Clannad is a story about many things. How our parents can fail us. How we can fail our children. How pain makes life worth living as much as joy. The paths we tread and even the ones we don’t lighting up the lives of others so long as we try our best. It is unapologetic in what it is, sad, truthful, optimistic about how the best way can be found.
It has more than earned its status as a classic. It is a must-play. If you have to play a single VN, make it this one. It will make you feel every emotion beneath the sun, for yourself and others. It might even change the way you think, it certainly has remained stuck in my mind over my favorite route. The only thing I could ‘critique’ or recommend is play with a guide, truly, for how much you would have to replay if you tried going for everything without one sounds like torture, spare yourself that. And take breaks, the whole thing is longer than all the Harry Potter books combined.
I really only like a few characters, I was told i need to complete all the routes with all the boring characters like kyou to progress with the character I like. I dont really like the illusion world bits either.
it's good maybe even the best. a ten out of ten for sure. it will take months to recover from this if i ever do at all
Fire game... Having all the side routes be required though is very torturous
This game is something i will always hold dear for the memories it created, the feels and the memorable music. I love this game while it maybe visually outdated or the characters portraits may have strange eyes i hope you, new player discard all this and try the game despite its flaws. This is one of the games that make this world a better place, to hold to dear to you in high regard for time is fleeting and soon we have to part.
I highly recommend to play this game with a guide otherwise and keep tissues ready(no its not that kind of game, but (manly) tears will be shed) otherwise its gonna be very frustrating experience.
(why my playtime is so low despite 100% the game is because i already completed the game on another platform and skipped almost everything save for some story i had missed), this probably the only game i played more than 4 times, watched the anime and read everything.
De las mejores visual novels, disfrutable de inicio a fin.
Just incredible. I came into this as a fan of the anime for years, however I never got around to the VN until now. Absolutely worth every penny, even if you're not overly-familiar with visual novels.
For those unfamiliar with the anime, it starts out as a seemingly typical high school romance story, and of course since it's a visual novel you have an array of girls to choose as potential romantic options. Each has a distinct personality and appearance, and they're all fairly likeable characters. However where this VN shines, for me at least, is the writing and the music. It had good comedic timing when it wanted me to laugh, and it punched me right in the gut when it wanted me to cry. And you will cry if you invest enough time into this VN, both from joy and sadness. The music is the cherry on top in this regard - the soundtrack for this is absolutely fantastic and perfectly encapsulates the emotions being conveyed by the story. I won't say too much more as this really is a story best experienced blind, however know that you will have an incredibly worthwhile experience if you give it time.
For non-VN gamers - you do need to complete every route in order to unlock the game's "true" ending and some of the routes are quite difficult to achieve - there are plenty of spoiler-free walkthroughs on this game's guide page here on Steam so don't feel afraid to use those if you get stuck.
For those familiar with the anime - this is still an absolutely worthwhile purchase. There is of course a lot more depth added for each individual character here than the anime can possibly manage in its far more limited run-time. Characters like Akio, Sanae, Tomoyo, Koumura and Yoshino all get a lot more content here than in the anime. There are a couple of minor things I prefer about the anime, the way it amalgamates all the routes in season 1 makes some of the moments in Afterstory a little bit nicer than in the game IMO, but that's a fairly nitpicky complaint. However, there are also elements of the plot progression I think the VN does much better. If it's been a little while since you last watched the anime, absolutely pick this up, regardless of whether or not it's on sale it's worthwhile.
Really my only complaint about the game itself is there is a fairly noticeable amount of typos and translation errors at times, but you can usually spot them from context so it doesn't majorly impact the experience.
10/10
Storytelling at it's peak.
works fine on steam deck, I just had to switch to the game window from the settings menu on first launch. otherwise it works great.
Cried a lot. Recommend
The best anime game in my mind.
Very Goated
