Super buggy, got soft-locked a lot. Also the lack of instructions at first is really frustrating, especially with how unforgiving it gets. Unfortunately just not worth the frustration.
why the actually in fuck am i playing? this game make head bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
It's an experience. Bizarre, annoying, fascinating, boring, and interesting. It's clearly unfinished and resembles more of an alpha build than a finished product. That said, figuring the game out was an adventure I enjoyed.
6/10
I really wanted to like this game, but what gameplay is there is difficult and disjointed.
There's a large chance that this game simply fits within my own niche of interests extremely well. I really do like this project a lot for what it is! an experience, and art. The cash registry is really fun too once you get in a rhythm. I think it does a good job of displaying a descent from what I've seen, though while the atmosphere is dreary and holds an important message about antipollution, but it doesn't exactly feel heavy y'know. Very close though! And I love all the surrealist energy!
Personally my biggest gripe with the game is simply the easy mode. I understand the, feeling that was being gone for with it. But ultimately, having it in a way where it's a completely different experiences and eliminating a core gameplay mechanic, (the bullet hell), it just feels like whoever needs, or simply just wants to play the easier mode, is being excluded y'know ? Personally I'd suggest a way to opt in and out of these things but, that's just one solution.
Otherwise!! If this game looks like it interests you then it probably will. I simply just, had a good time!! There's also the lack of tutorial but personally I worked things out after a few tries. yeah
I wanted to like this game but there really seems no point to it I've played nearly an hour and there isn't any substantial narrative. You're just scanning things and slowly collecting bills. Also the commuting minigame is hell. Really no fun at all and a hard pass for me.
I purchased Need a Packet because I watched Markiplier try it out a while ago, and he had a very negative reaction to it at the time, but the visuals were so compelling that I had to come and try it out myself. And I'm glad that I did! I haven't finished the game yet, but so far Need a Packet is a challenging game, with great artwork and music, and a compelling story! The mechanics are interesting too, switching between you being a cashier and giving packets to people, and defending the transport you take to work against giant demons and the like, it all getting progressively more difficult as the game goes on.
The only qualms I have with it, are that when you are sorting money, if you put the bill in the wrong place (say a 20 with the 5s) you have to pull everything else off from on top of it before you can get it. I think the most recent bill put in the stack should be the first one to come out. And, I know it's supposed to be hard... and maybe I'm just bad at games? But the part when the demons are attacking you when you're checking people out...recharging the "guards" is almost impossible. And sometimes it doesn't even let me recharge them. So unless you've somehow saved up enough health, you can't make it past that part. And it starts you all the way over from the beginning every time you fail, which is annoying, but also adds to the difficulty.
So overall, the game is good! And I don't want to take away from the creativity and originality of this game by comparing it to something else... but if you enjoyed Papers, Please you would enjoy this! (Also if you just generally enjoy creepy pixel games) That's all I have to say about it so far, maybe I'll update this once I complete the game. = )
I mean, it's cool, but everyone's versions look different from mine. Some have a naked lady, others have different characters and layouts of the screen. It didn't seem like it was long enough though. I did like it.
As others mentioned, it's a good idea, but it's extremely broken. The first time I started it up, I couldn't interact with anything because I had a controller plugged int. It's not clear what can and can't be clicked on. The instructions are complicated and consist entirely of arrows drawn all over the screen. Most importantly, the game doesn't register clicks correctly; I need to click 5+ times on things before it will recognize my click, even on the menu.
With some more development, this could be a good game. But it was not ready for release.
I've played almost over an hour of this game now and I still have no idea what is happening. Descent into madness? Normal distribution of schedule 1 narcotics? Idk. Doesn't matter. It's weird and I love it! It's got mystery. Lots of show and don't tell. And the fact that it's confusing and uncomfortable makes it even better.
It is a game with not the greatest communication as to what you can and can not do and how things work alongside the sometimes imprecise or non-responsive controls (that is not communicated to the player to be intentional or just a bug), if you can figure out how to play the game and learn what you can get away with doing through the shortcuts that exist in the game then it is a surreal game that is worth the time playing.
It would be nice though if the communication was a little more informative rather than just pictures and the occasional message that players can miss if not paying attention.
Think 'Papers, Please', but you're a cashier instead. And you are on a really bad trip.
This is another one of these games that I liked but can't really point out why I liked it.
Maybe it's the monotonous gameplay that comforts my brain.
Or maybe the awesome soundtrack this game has. It really is awesome.
The weirdness. The creepy undertones. (Everything I) Need (in) a packet.
A big downside are the really messed up hitboxes. Trying to grab the money but have to click 5 times before I actually hit it. Frustrating.
Bugs everywhere.
I wish there was a way to review a game without giving this an recommend or not. This is such a bizarre game that I know it would be perfect for certain people, while a massive turn off to most. Its not for most and I don't think its worth the full $7 for just a try but you can easily see if its for you in time to get a refund.
I personally enjoyed this game. Its so strange that it keeps you intrigued on what is going on in the world. The basic gameplay, the register, takes a back seat to the rest of the game as you play. Aspects of the world around you change, the bus ride to work changes into an increasingly difficult bullet hell, and trash begins to pile up everywhere.
Now, there's an easy and insane modes, they're not difficulties. Easy is basically the tutorial, to teach you how to scan, and that's about it. Insane, called so because you are seemingly going insane, is the actual story and gameplay.
The main gripe I have with this game is that there are zero explanations save for one sticky note that confusingly tells you how to scan objects or take cards. Randomly you have to start checking IDs for alcohol, suddenly you have a tower defense aspect show up with no warning. The things you buy in the 'shop' have no explanation.
But ultimately I had to give this game a thumbs up. Its innovative, artistic, and the aesthetic is up my alley. I'd highly recommend it if you can pick it up on sale for a couple bucks just to try it.
I really enjoy the game it reminds me of my daily grind at my own retail job and how I start to go mad after a while so I have to take frequent vacations. The game play is very intresting and there are some moments that make you go wtf.
Good idea executed into a buggy, incoherent mess.
I can not recommend this game, and that makes me really sad... I wanted to love this game, I love Papers Please and this game is very much like it, you have a job where things get progressively harder, but it's a mental illness you deal with instead of an oppressive government. It's a great idea and the screenshots and video show that it is at least competent in representing the progressive delerium.
Unfortunately it is extremely unfriendly to new players. Unlike Papers Please, which has characters and documents explain what you need to do, as well as providing an example as the first check of each day (normally) here you get to click a little post it that has a '?' on it and then all it does is give you arrows. Yes there is someone who emails you to tell you the differences in each day but they don't explain anything well and completely leave out some parts (the Alcohol is never mentioned nor does the '?' explain what to do).
The UI is also unfriendly as the number buttons often click two instead of just one (i had this problem mostly with 6 and 7) not to mention your 'warning' and 'penalty' triangles. You get three warnings before you get a STEEP (-10) penalty, It makes sense to penalize instead of fire the character but I am never told what mistake I made and am unable to correct it. I may have simply missed givng the customer a packet or maybe they gave me a card and I hit the 'Print' button.
This is a wonderful idea, I just think it needed a few more months of testing before being released. All of this being said I hope the developers keep making games and only wish them and this game, the best.
It's a good game but it lacks tutorial and explaination other than an extremely unhelpful ! on the register that doesn't actually have any words to assist you. The game also takes a very long time for the protagonist's mind to decay but I would sitll thumbs up just for the price. that one guy that has a messed up face and only buys fruit with 5s, FUCK THAT DUDE
EDIT: This game is shit don't waste your money buying it
Video (first 20 mins of gameplay + commentary):
https://youtu.be/EEDzbFeQJ60Short Version:
Dystopian grocery store cashier simulator, which was both bizarre and weirdly enjoyable.
Definite "Papers, Please" vibe from this game. We're not too far into the game yet, but it's clearly aiming to nail the feeling of going to a monotonous job and slowly losing your mind, which is how we felt after 20 minutes of playing, but now we can't stop thinking about it and want to play more.
Longer Version:
Need a Packet shares a lot of similarities with Papers Please. Gameplay-wise, you show up for work, you do your repetitive job, you go home, and you try to figure out how to spend what little money you made. So far we've only played 3 days worth and in that time the game started to build on its complexity, adding more nuances to your daily monotony while you ring up groceries.
Aesthetically, the game also looks somewhat like Papers Please with its intentionally drab colors and memorable customer faces. Most of this artwork is pretty consistent with the occasional element looking a little out of place, such as text, but overall not a problem.
We had a couple issues at first understanding exactly how to play, as the on-screen tutorial is a little confusing, but honestly the "sink or swim" feeling was part of the fun.
Based on the description and screenshots on the Need a Packet Steam page, we can tell some crazy stuff is on the horizon and that it's likely to deviate in its conveyed story than what Papers Please was looking to do. We're both curious and looking forward to seeing how that turns out and overall recommend the game.
