A Journey Through Madness and Myth
Senua’s Sacrifice is more than just a game—it’s a journey into Senua’s mind and emotions. While the combat and puzzles aren’t perfect, the story, sound, and visuals make it an unforgettable experience. Recommended for anyone who loves powerful stories and immersive worlds.
PS: The voices in Senua’s head, created with amazing 3D sound, make you feel like you’re in her mind. Using headphones makes this even better.
Rating: 9/10
First of all, what a phenomenal game. The only thing I didn't like was the excessive voices in your head. Don't get me wrong I understand that it's a crucial part of the game, but sometimes when you're solving a puzzle and there are all these voices whispering in your ear it can be a bit annoying. Everything else was perfect.
Refreshing. And absolutely brilliant. Not the most innovative in terms of gameplay mechanics, but the story and the world-building that this game presents are spectacular to say the least. Its portrayal of experiences of psychosis will give you a lot to think about long after you’re done with it. It’s one of those games that leaves you with experiences that’ll stay with you for a lifetime.
Senua teaches us, no matter our condition, how deep the grief, how hard the fight, we can overcome. Ninja Theory this isn't just a game This.Is.Art. I remember art the most thank you.
This game is a masterpiece.
You can finish it in about 10 hours or so and you will be gripped every minute of the game. As soon as I learned about Senua, her quest, and what she must do I wanted to see her succeed. Every fight, and every puzzle is done well and you feel a level of satisfaction when you beat them. The graphics are well done and the controls feel tight, I highly recommend using a controller for this game.
Where this game truly stands above the rest is with the sound work. The music and constant voice work in this game truly makes it something unique that make you really know what is going on and what Senua is feeling in every moment.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone who loves a deep, rich story that makes you feel something, the ending of this game will sit with you long after you beat it.
I was planning on skipping this game and jump straight into the sequel, thank god I didn't. This game is art. Insane visuals, great atmosphere, impressive story and amazing audio design. Wasn't a big fan of the first 2 hours because of the puzzles which I didn't find a lot of fun to do, but after that it kept getting better and better. Just wanted to give Senua a big hug after the credits rolled
Visually impressive, immersing experience with great audio design.
Game is short, but it's good, because the game itself is quite simple. Combat is straight forward and easy to learn. They clearly had a focus on the narrative, so the game is more like a interactive movie, which is not a bad thing, but might not be for everyone.
Definitely recommended
Oh my lord, this game was insanely frustrating. The combat and story are actually pretty excellent. But my god, the puzzles are so tedious and frustrating -- and they make up about 80% of the game! You will literally look up a guide on Google to AVOID having to do them. That's a sign of a frustrating, unsatisfying game.
Let me start this review by saying that this game had (at times) phenomenal acting, animations, set and sound design. The schizophrenic voices that were coming from different places were terrifying. When you had to run away and these voices got louder, up to a yell, then it just felt like I had to take breaks.
Despite these incredible feats, I still didn't fully like the game. There were too many things that did not sit with me well. For example, the cutscenes were great, but then when you were solving puzzles it felt like default walk animation with not much. In some running scenes, the running felt really hard to control which made me die for no reason. The fighting parts were pretty good, but they would drag on forever. The shrines, which would tell you a bit of lore, felt tacky. They reminding me of listening to descriptions of art pieces when you go to museums (sure, it gets the job done, but I just felt like the medium of video games is so much more than listening to a description). These shrines were optional, but they were still there.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrife is an interesting "game". I put game in quotations, because it feels more like an interactive movie and an experience than a game. The game focuses on a story of Senua a celtic warrior suffering from mental illness. Developers put a lot of effort to depict Senua's mind with the help of several researchers and people who exprerienced similiar issues in the past. On the internet you can find an interesting documentary about game creation called "Hellblade: Senua's Psychosis | Mental Health Feature" which shows how they managed to create such a world and how they faithfully repreasent the mental illness. Their effort paid off with this beatiful experience, which hasn't been replicated since (at least that I know of).
Most notable positives about the game are:
-Beatiful landscape, surrounded by pleasant to look at and yet brutal nature, you can see dozen of ship washed ashore, filling beaches and seas. Whenever you're not by the sea or next to a mountain, you're in either cave or a refreshing forest. World of Hellblade is something I would advise to experience by yourselves rather then listen to someone explain it to you.
-Interesting story, most of the story takes place in Senua's mind which is filled with darkness. We're shown how our protagonist fights or at least tries to fight her weakness. It's keeping your attention from start to finish. My caveat about it is the ending itself which is confusing to say the least.
-Great voice acting, throughout almost the whole game you're traveling together with voices appearing in Senua's head. VAs did a good job, all the voices sound fenomenal. You're being drawn to the voices you hear the whole time and the moment they disappear you're suddenly dumbfounded and confused on what's going on.
-Memorable facial expressions of our main heroine, Senua shows various emotions during her story, ranging from sorrow to anger, they look alive and you don't need to guess what hero feels.
But this game isn't perfect and has some negatives:
-It's basically a walking simulator with some puzzles, while at the begging they are interesting and entertaining, the longer you play the more you're annoyed at how long it takes to get from point a to b to progress the story and how repetitive the puzzles are. It's not a bad thing per se, but it might get some players uninterested in the story.
-Difficulty of the combat is questionable, while fighting 1-2 enemies at the time should be manageable for most, encountering 3 or more foes is an insane spike in difficulty. While combat is very responsive and feels good, it is hard to control the battlefield while there are a lot of opponents.
Even tho the story and the way developers show mental illness is the main selling point, the gameplay might left some players dejected. Overall Hellblade is a good experience which I would recommend to everyone to at least watch it, if not play the game. This tale is a perfect movie, but not so perfect game.
The game looks stunning be it fails to innovate you are doing the same puzzle from the start to end also are is very small move set for combat which can get repetitive as well as there are annoying sound continuously, i understand the game is trying to be eerie but without any stop it just gets annoying by the end, apart from that story is good but the protagonist just keeps crying the whole game. the environment are build though someone who can look past repetitive of the game can definitely try the game.
Amazing game with incredible audio engineering! The fighting is satisfying and fun and the story is awesome! I love of the lore of Norse mythology.
Great story, great visuals, and a fantastic representation for an often misunderstood mental illness.
this game is a tale of insanity with Norse mythology and im there for it. I had put this game aside for a while, and had played it on whim. But id highly Redmond it to anyone who likes psychological horror
I don't really do reviews, but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is an incredible experience. I rarely experience immersive feelings and thrills like I had with this game. It is exhilarating and it even got my hand into a spasm holding the controller. Again... What an incredible, amazing thrill of an experience this game is! Definitely hands down one of the best in it's genre.
Really looking forward to play Senua's Saga.
This is a MUST HAVE game.
The psychology behind this game is truly mind bending!
I want to thank Ninja Theory for making this game!
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a deeply atmospheric and emotionally charged action-adventure that stands out for its unique handling of mental health issues. The game follows Senua, a warrior who battles through a haunting vision of Viking Hell, all while struggling with psychosis. The binaural audio design is a key feature, making the voices in Senua’s head feel intensely real and immersive. The combat, while initially simple, builds into a fluid and intense experience as you face increasingly chaotic encounters. Its haunting visuals and profound narrative make it a memorable journey, though the gameplay can feel repetitive at times.
Beautiful game. More like playing a story than playing a game, which I especially appreciate the break from normal gaming.
awesome graphics! the lore is very cool but its not for everyone....maybe i will give it another try
Interesting concept for a game! 8/10 and that is cause its really small and its for one run only. if its on sale then go ahead its worth it
Unfortunately, this is one of the worst games I've ever played.
I gave it several tries, hoping that it would become more interesting, but the major part of the gameplay is just walking around trying to find "an object that looks like this". This is stupid. I'm uninstalling it forever.
I'm not particularly a fan of monster action games, despite playing games like Dragon Age series (which i love the first game Origins) and Skyrim.
It's usually all the same thing and there's no great connection or depth with the characters because I always feel very artificial (in my opinion, because nothing is really serious and relatable). But I dared to buy this game because of the excellent reviews they give.
My honest opinion: It's art! Pure art in symbiosis with digital technology that are games, combined with Norse mythology. It's brutal, dark, gross, both visually and audibly. And the game's narrative.
With unusual graphic talent and gameplay. Simply, epic.
The combat is some of the best I've seen. There are no magic potions, powers to evoke, numbers or life bars. It's you and the enemies. You have to hurt them and you have to focus on surviving. Simple. I found it strange at first but in the end, I love it, love it. The details are superb, you see the wounds being opened and increasingly widening and spreading as you hit them (or they hit you). The movements are simple but very practical and logical. No pirouettes and kung-fu. Pure combat. It's something I really appreciate. The music during the fights is intense, tense and very top-notch. It's a great pleasure to battle to the sound of music.
It is a game with a more serious perspective on mental health, such as depression and mental illness. But it does so in a graceful, firm, growing and relentless way. I just think about wanting to experience something like this again. I love, love, love the visual art of this Norse mythology game. Not even Skyrim did that and it's a great game. The sound and music is, without a doubt, the best I've ever heard and witnessed. It's so stupidly immersive. For me, it's that game that left pure pleasure and satisfaction at the end. And that leaves intentions of reliving again.
I recommend it and challenge everyone to try it. And I'm going to play again and then move on to Hellblade 2.
A big congratulations to the team and the entire studio for the success and art they created here. It seems that fate brought together people with the right talents, right vision, and right decisions. All together, they created something that is a masterpiece. Brutal!
visuals are cool, but i cant say im a fan of "action games" that feature 1% using 1 (one) combo string and 99% walking aimlessly
The story and presentation is pretty cool but the repetitive puzzles get old by the halfway point and the combat is clunky and feels like filler. Way too many repeat fights and the poor controls and camera caused me to die far more than I ever did in a game like Sekiro which is much much more difficult in its mechanics. By the time the credits rolled I was itching to uninstall.
Fantastic. Incredible atmosphere and compelling characters with a focus on audio design. Only complaint is that it is somewhat short, but it is thick and heavy. 9/10

I've been planning to play this game for a long time. Twice, I have gone on to defeat the first two bosses. But this time, I went for it. It was frankly amazing. What is most astonishing is how this game was made. With only 300k, the Developers made something that even a big publisher with 100 million couldn't.
The game is psychological, and man, it was done so well. You can almost feel what is going on. the environment is so gritty and dark but fits the story perfectly. For me the best part of this game was the audio, if you are planning to start this game, make sure to play it in a dark room and have a good headset. trust me you will have one of the finest gaming experiences. This game focuses heavily on audio, the turmoil, and voices all are very important. This is the literal definition of EARGASM.
The visuals are great, the developer did marvelous work with this one. despite being nearly a decade old it still looks great, the atmosphere of this game is so good.
The gameplay isn't that exceptional compared to the audio and environment but it did its work. The game is mostly an environmental puzzle with some combat in it. Personally, I didn't find the combat that exciting but it gets the work done decently, you will feel somewhat satisfied nonetheless. The puzzles weren't unique but fit the game perfectly, the integration of the puzzle solving was done greatly in the game in my opinion. However I would like to point out one thing the puzzles need to be solved at a particular angle which kinda messes up, even if you find the correct shape the game doesn't register it unless you look at it the way the game wants. Apart from that I didn't have much trouble.
The lorestones can be a bit bothersome to collect, I personally didn't go for it, instead listened to youtube so no perfectionist for this game. Now, what made me interested in this game was the norse mythology setting, Im a sucker for mythology and this game handled it quite nicely.
A deeply unsettling experience. Loved and hated every second of it.
I recommend looking for every lorestone, as the stories they tell will resonate with Senua's journey.
They should have just made a movie. Only thing good about this game is the atmosphere, Game play is crap and the puzzles are suck.
After completing this i can only say that hellbalde is a subjective game. It might appeal to some and not to others. Honestly for me it was another unique experience. The non linear story just adds to its appeal. Overall if you have patience you will think of it as a good play but not a great one. The biggest plus point: Combat. One of the best combat systems i have ever seen
Good graphic. Good story. Good voice acting. Good controls. Fun enemy fighting. Too easy puzzles, but fun to do them. No bugs (at least I haven't saw any). Actually, it is a good game, just a bit too short. Playing it with controller is much more fun. Give it a try - game is quite fun.
The setting and graphics are great. The story so far seems great.
The puzzles are ok. Some lead players where they need to go. Some are very confusing in you need to loop around without being told. I was wondering aimlessly for entirely too long without a hint sometimes.
The combat is horrendous for me at least. No tutorial on timing or anything. I know there's only so many buttons for the combat but you aren't given much time in combat before your first boss battle. AND THE FACT THAT THE BOSS BATTLE IS AT LEAST 7 PHASES THAT I COUNTED SO FAR AND STILL DIDNT GET THROUGH. No check point midway either. You die you restart the boss battle. Sucks for you spend 10 minutes to see if you can get there again. No health bar for yourself or the boss to let you know where you're at. Just ruins the game for me.
For me (someone not very quick when it comes to dodging/blocking on time) this game was the perfect amount of difficulty in terms of fighting. This game is all about the journey and story than it is combat. I loved every minute of it and want to play again now that i have learned more through the first playthrough, This game doesn't hold your hand so i learned a lot and now want to go back and defeat some of the bosses again knowing what i know now lol. I def recommend this game to anyone who enjoys story over combat.
This game is a masterpiece in world building, story telling and showing what mental illness can do to someone.
I had this game for far too long on my wish list and I'm glad I finally got it.
The setting is something I truly adore, and from what I know of Norse mythology it seems accurate.
The bosses are fun and refreshing, coming from souls games they are a bit easy but engaging enough.
They also truly fit the story.
Senua is an extremely interesting character and I want to dig deeper into her mind.
Thank you for sharing this piece of art with me!
Hellblade is an incredible game that impresses with its depth and attention to detail. Huge respect to the developers and everyone who contributed to its creation. If you’ve watched the behind-the-scenes documentary after completing the game, you’ll understand just how seriously the creators approached the subject of mental health disorders. It’s clear they aimed to portray this with accuracy and sensitivity.
I rarely play games like this, especially those with this style of gameplay. But in Hellblade, that’s not even the focus. Here, the story and its delivery take center stage. The sound design is exceptional! The voices are so piercing and lifelike that I found myself turning around as if someone was speaking to me in real life. In a way, the game has the atmosphere of a good horror experience.
The music is also beautiful, perfectly setting the tone and enhancing the dramatic atmosphere. And, of course, the visuals are stunning, fully immersing you in the game’s world.
Playing through it was a pleasure without the distractions of unnecessary collectibles or character leveling. The gameplay is streamlined, focusing on rune and symbol searches that drive the story forward. For this, the developers deserve an extra commendation.
I highly recommend Hellblade to everyone! Make sure to collect all the runes - they add even more clarity to the story. I’m eagerly looking forward to exploring the second part of this game.
This is possibly the most powerful storytelling I've ever experienced.
Senua is a broken warrior who has lost her lover to a vicious Viking attack, to make matters worse her lover's soul has been taken to the Viking underworld, Hel. She embarks on a quest to retrieve his soul from the depths, or die trying...
What makes Hellblade unique is that Senua suffers auditory and visual hallucinations, and you as the player experience these directly. It gives people the opportunity to feel a fraction of what people who suffer from these types of mental illnesses feel. This game effortlessly tackles the sometimes difficult conversation of mental health and delivers it to the audience in an interesting and powerful story.
The visuals are stunning, the lore is interesting, the music/ambience is phenomenal, it's very terrifying at some points and the game play is challenging, yet not quite 'souls like' difficult.
I came for the interesting story and realised this game has it all.
Easily makes my top ten best games list. Cannot recommend it highly enough!
I really like this game, i really do, but I can't play cuz it's a power hungry mf. Settings everything to low on a high-end pc and the game still runs hot. Please for the love of lord, optimize it.
This game was a work of art. The lore was what kept me playing and you have to like games for the lore if you want to enjoy this. Senua's story is complex. Most people say its a walking simulator but I disagree.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice by Ninja Theory offers a visually stunning and emotionally immersive experience. The environments, inspired by Norse mythology, are breathtaking, blending haunting landscapes with beautiful, atmospheric settings. Melina Juergens delivers an incredible performance as Senua, bringing emotional depth to the narrative.
The game’s focus on psychosis is handled with care, and the sound design—filled with whispering voices—effectively portrays Senua’s inner struggle, though it can become overwhelming over time. The puzzles are engaging, and the simple combat ensures the storytelling remains the centerpiece. However, the use of live-action footage for some characters felt inconsistent next to Senua’s 3D model, slightly breaking immersion.
Despite minor flaws, Hellblade delivers an unforgettable experience with a perfect balance of narrative and gameplay.
This game is visually stunning, has an amazing story and a well thought character
It has puzzles that are fun to solve and challenging yet very enjoyable combat
The fact that you can complete this game fully in 10 hrs is just great
Awesome game, would totally recommend 10/10
9/10 it's mental illness simulator and a bit of combat. I enjoy the story and the puzzle is the only thing that keep me sane, the combat is a bit disappointing because this is a story focus game tho this game worth the time also do your sanity check after playing.
I played the second installment of this game before playing this one. I really liked the second installment of this game (Hellblade II: Senua's Saga). Had I played this one first, I would definitely not have played the second one as this one would have left a bad taste in my mouth. But I played this one for completion's sake, and I would recommend it to other players that are into torturing themselves with obtuse puzzles that leave one frantic with angst to just get it over with (solutions are wholly obvious) and players that love to take about 8 hours to do what could conceivably be done in 2.4 hours.
Anyhow, this is a video game. It is about a main character is not a kleptomaniac for a change. There is nothing to collect, and enemies do not drop anything. There is, though, ample reasons to walk around and look for things, and reasons to look at stuff that a speedrunner would probably not stop to look at. The puzzles force you to look around and spin the camera until vertigo is just on the verge of creeping in and tipping you out of your favorite gaming chair or couch.
The story is loosely as follows: You have to take [thing] to [place] to save [person and/or person's soul]. There's also tons of references to the Norse gods. I had just finished God of War: Ragnarok the day before I started playing this game, so it was somewhat familiar, although I failed to make any connection as to why those references were in this game. Perhaps those that are more into the story of this game can fill in the blanks for me or themselves and others. I didn't figure it out while trying to discern the tiny bits and pieces that didn't quite fill out anything as far as a backstory.
Honestly, I don't know what the hell is going on here, or why. But there is just enough combat in the game to make it a game and not just a walking simulator. The combat is not challenging. You have to option of choosing "Auto" so that the challenge of combat presented to you changes dynamically according to how well you are fighting. I set it to "Hard" because that's what I chose on the other game. I died exactly three times in this game -- once when I fell off a ledge where I had to balance myself (which I was unaware that is what I was supposed to be doing). And once in combat. But I have the sneaking suspicion that is game is more about the drama, story, and presentation much more so than the combat. The combat does work for what it is, though. No complaints there.
All in all, it is a decent game, but again, this one would not have led me to want to play the second one. But I would recommend this game to someone that has tried neither and has taken some interest in this game. Either from previews, pictures, or because it's on sale. Definitely get this if it is on sale. If you end up liking this one, you will definitely love the follow-up (I think).
Although it may be considered a bit too easy, I still think the game as an interesting story to offer, playing as Senua, a character that suffers from severe psychosis is quite the unique experience, it'll lead you to the conclusion that no, you can't fix her bro

I've had this game in my backlog for quite a while, and going into it I knew the ending already. I won't spoil anything for anyone else, but it's definitely one of those games where the ending really brings the whole story together. The combat is interesting and the puzzles feel unique. It's definitely a game worth playing if you can.
I really enjoy games that tackle mental health topics with the level of respect they deserve, and this game really delves into schizophrenia in a way that makes it really palpable for the rest of us to understand. This game was truly a highlight of my year, and I can't wait to play the next one.
"I have always been very lazy about playing this game, but I have finally finished it. I still don't know if I like it or not. So much agony and suffering becomes tiresome, but I can't deny the originality of the game and its mechanics. It's as if Lars von Trier, David Lynch, and Dave McKean decided to make a video game together. So I can say that this game is a piece of art and, although not pleasant, it is as impressive as Picasso's Guernica. The only things I can really criticize are two things. First, the real image of these pseudo-actors. It doesn't blend; it takes you out of the setting. Second, the story doesn't have enough strength and drama in contrast to the dramatic, schizophrenic, distressing, and, as I've already said, agonizing nature of the game. Stories need to be wrapped up better. I'm going to see how the second installment evolves. Thanks for the nightmare."
Not your usual game. It's more of an experience and a cool look into psychosis. Thew story is ok. The combat had me mad at some points but was manageable. There are not any instructions so be sure to read through the controls. The visuals and atmosphere are breathtaking. The voices you here in Senua's head definetly add a layer of intensity, aslo be sure to listen to them! they will be your indicators in combat. Overall a very cool experience and game. Not for everyone, but i think it's worth it!
Very unique game, it's different from the others. As someone who plays games for a long time now, I can usually predict what is going to happen because everything is the same, but this game caught me off guard multiple times.
Story is amazing, it really makes you feel everything. Graphics and sounds are insane.
This is a unique game from start to finish. Mostly equal parts narrative experience and game. The subject matter might not be for everyone so if mental health struggles can be triggering its best to dive deeper before buying.
The combat is simple, but it has more depth than it initially lets on. Despite being fairly linear, the puzzles are more exploratory than challenging. Normally, I'd say this is problematic as a linear story driven game can be quite boring. However, the lore sprinkled throughout the world and clever visual mechanics make the limited exploration a good bit more interesting than it would otherwise have been.
It is a short romp and if you're looking for a game that delivers an experience through sound design, visual storytelling, and has some challenging-at-times combat, I highly recommend it.
A bit late recommendation
This game is definitely a work of art. I totally recommend anyone who seeks for a fresh experience. It's dark, it's tough, it's full of story driven and sometimes walking simulator... It's an experience.
One of the best experiences i ve ever played as a video game.
I really liked Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. The graphics are stunning, and the gameplay is easy to pick up but still very enjoyable. I have to admit, I was a bit confused with the story at first, but the more I thought about each scene, the deeper it became. What I really appreciate is how the devs created this game in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis. It’s a powerful exploration of mental health, and that adds a whole new layer to the experience. Even though it's a shorter game, it's absolutely worth it for the experience it delivers. Definitely a unique and thought-provoking game!
Great story, great acting, looks amazing. Part puzzle, part rpg, part action.
