Welcome to the Rokkenjima of October 4, 1986.
You have been given a chance to catch a glimpse of the family conference held annually by the Ushiromiya family.
The remaining life in the old family head
who has built up a vast fortune is very slim.
To his children, the greatest point of contention at this family conference
is the distribution of his inheritance.
Everyone desires all that money, no one relents, and no one believes.
Who will gain the old head's vast inheritance?
Where is the 10 tons of gold that the old head is said to have hidden?
Can the unnerving riddle of the epitaph which is said to point to
the location of that gold be solved?
In the midst of this, a suspicious letter is sent from one claiming to be a witch.
The presence of a 19th person on this island,
which should only have 18, begins to hang in the air.
Brutal murders repeat, and unsolvable riddles are left at the scene.
How many will die? How many will live? Or will everyone die?
Is the culprit one of the 18, or not?
Is the culprit a "human", or a "witch"?
Please, enjoy this isolated island, western mansion,
mystery-suspense gadget of the good old days to the fullest.

I haven't been successful in finding anything that would top this for me for 12 years. Even though there are pretty much no choices I'm going to die on the hill of it still having the best gameplay out of everything I've played before and since if approached from the situational game design perspective. It's a thrilling mystery that strikes a perfect balance of tone, serving you the drama, comedy, tranquility, surprise and suspense. It's subtle but extremely effective in converying beautiful ideas which, while I can't speak for everyone else, they have changed how I see the world and people around me. It does require you to read but it's very much equipped to make it pleasant with the NVL layout that covers the entire screen in text.
I love video games, I've certainly found a lot of great ones. I'm a fan of many different genres, including Nintendo games, RPGs (and jRPGs), point'n'clicks, shooters, you name it. I've read quite a few visual novels too, been a VN game jam judge once. I'm simply saying that nothing else has made such an impression on me and I honestly wish something would capture that feeling for me again. I'm not really going into every single game comparing it to Umineko, I'm conscious of the fact that it's pretty much always apples to oranges. It's a lot of self-conscious rambling, I know but I'm pouring my heart out and just trying to convey that I've been ready for something else to claim the top spot for me for over a decade and it just didn't happen yet.

CINEMA
Peak literature, every other games will feel stale after playing this game
This is maybe the best story ever written I am not kidding, this shit is magnificent...
It's so peak
i just finished the first episode using the Umineko Project version of the game (basically mandatory, please believe it's worth the effort for this story), i'm in shock just from how good the narrative was. It started off painfully slow, but i'd sit through ten times the amount of boring reading if it meant i got another experience like this. Even after only reading the first episode, i can assure you it's more than worth the price, i can't remember the last time i got to enjoy a story this good.
Valentina: Quiero unos tacos de Umineko
Taquero: ¿Umineko?
Valentina: Jeje, si.
Asi bien peak y god
This is for both the Question and Answer arcs;
I for the most part enjoyed Umineko, it's a very verbose VN (Think fate/stay night, 100+ hours) but stays entertaining and engaging through most of it. It's essentially a mystery VN that challenges you the reader to engage with it and continue thinking, and to avoid giving up and simply passively reading.
The game presents this as a battle between the MC and the witch Beatrice each fighting to solve the story as a solvable traditional mystery, or an unsolvable fantasy story. This energy is kept through the first four chapters (Question arcs) and will ask you to go back and re-read previous chapters after giving you the clues to solve it. The next four chapters (Answer arcs) give more hints and stop one stop from completely solving the mystery and themes of the story.
Like many people I found the back half to be overly long, with WAY too much focus on fantasy elements. There is a fun in parsing the meaning and intent of the first half's fantasy writing, but the back half just feels superfluous.
Overall, glad I read it and recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind working and engaging with a story like this. The manga is also a great option for the second reading, cutting much of the unnecessary dialogue. And get ready to ruminate on, "Without love, it cannot be seen.".
i love a game that has me saying "what the fuck is going on" out loud every five minutes
This is the best work of fiction I have ever read. If you love mystery, you need to read this. It is a significant time commitment, but absolutely worth it.
Media so good it makes you a better person
Turns out there exist VNs that combine massive quality and massive quantity and this is one of them, I consider myself a decently fast reader and it still took me 50h on Questions and 50h on Answers
Getting the patch is almost mandatory to enjoy the game, massive thanks to the fans for actually making the steam release good thanks to their efforts, the entry level is a bit high cause of combined price and the almost mandatory third party download if you wanna play on PC (otherwise get it on other platforms) but it is undeniably one of my favourites and was a life-changing read for me
It's a bit insane how much of a disservice this steam page does to the actual work, the music, the opening movies, the story, the characters are all leagues better in their modern version than whatever they try to show here
Tldr it's one of the best works I've read of my life it's just aids to get access to on PC
The only reason this game enjoys a cult status is because back in 2007 there were only about ten visual novels in total and it was really easy to stand out despite technical inadequacies. (The original character sprites were laughable even by 2007 standards)
If this game was released today in the state that it is, it would've gotten about 2 or 3 Steam reviews at best and would've been overlooked by most because there are better visual novels coming out nearly every week.
Watch the anime if you're curious about the plot, but leave this fossilized turd in a museum where it belongs.
peak
(Same review of Question and Answer arcs)
I feel like my understanding of storytelling as a whole has been improved for the experience. It changed how I approach stories and characters, and put the relationship of the reader to the author in a whole new light. I don't have the words to describe Umineko, one day I want to write up a long and heartfelt review, but until then:
Without love it cannot be seen.

Very hard for me to give 5 stars to a visual novel but this game delivers on every aspect. Story was great. Game had very few choices but made you actually think. This story could only be told in a game like this. The voice and music (I used 07th mod for japanese voices) was some of the best I've heard in any game. Artwork was good and there are a few different styles you can pick from with the patch I used. (I chose the pachinko sprites because it gave the females the largest breasts).
1. How To Play
There are a few ways to play umineko (Played mine on Deck with 07th)
- 07th (Options between Classic, PS3, Pachinko Sprites, argueably the Pachinko sprites are the most lifelesss, like what they were made for)
- Umineko Project (More Animations, Different translations)
- Umineko Switch (More Contents, you get Tsubasa, Hane and Saku)
Regardless of what ways you play, make sure you have the japanese audio, they have a lot of legendary VA in this, Miki Itou (Android 18), Horie Yui, Rie Kugimiya and Sayaka Ohara (Yuko Ichihara) are my favorites in this, and voiced their characters perfectly.
2. Game Review
Umineko is a masterpiece and way ahead of it's time considering when it was released. I would recommend the game for anyone who's a fan of the mystery genre, if you love Higurashi like me, you would love this as well. If you have watched the anime, forget the anime, the anime didn't do the game any justice.
Game Length: Quite long and hence worth every money you spent.
Characters: All characters are written and voiced well, loved the work that Miki Itou, Sayaka Ohara and Horie Yui did in the voice acting.
3. Closing Rant
After playing a few of his games, I can say that Ryuukishi (Director/Writer), is a what-if, if George Lucas has actual talent and skill to direct and write the story, to back up his world and character building. He does have his faults, like George Lucas, some of the filler conversations are awkward (it's not the translation, i listen to the JP audio as well), not as bad as George Lucas "I hate sand, it's course and it's rough", but this is also me nitpicking. He also has a habit of pushing a character to the wayside after building them up. My poor favorite character have nothing to do after her arc than acting stupid and shouting supporting lines, I also have some peeves on ending B as well, but he did warn us we won't like the end. In the end. But i am pretty glad i played both main games.

It's just... SO PEAK
meh, weak recommend
i love umineko
Nice
please play umineko, I can't keep getting away with just saying things about it and not having people understand
I first read Umineko episodes 1-4 when I was brand new to visual novels, back in 2009 when it was still a fan translation. While I loved the music, I was basically meh on the rest of the product due to unlikable characters, godawful pacing, and silly-looking sprites with no voice acting. I was perhaps rebelling since many fans in my weeb circle were overhyping it back then (keep in mind this was BEFORE the Answer Arcs even existed).
I enjoyed it more the second time using the "Umitweak" patch (now upgraded to 07th Mod), which allowed me to read Umineko with PS3 sprites AND voice acting. I still have no idea how MangaGamer never got the rights to add this to their version.
Having sprites and voices made simpler scenes like the slice-of-life moments and money arguments in Episode 1 more interesting, as well as making Episode 4's Bern and Lambda troll laughs right before the credits roll glorious. All the "USHIROMIYA BATOORRRAAHH," "BEE AH TOH REE CHEEEHH," and "ZEN ZEN DAME DAAAA" yells were great to listen to. As someone who actually liked the anime adaptation before the PS3 version was a thing, it was nice to see the anime voices in VN form.
I liked Battler and Ange more on a re-read. Initially, I considered Battler a lame incompetent version of Phoenix Wright. In a way he still is, but his silly arguments are part of what made Umineko entertaining. Considering what's revealed about him in later episodes made his portrayal more interesting to me.
Most of the human characters were objectively not very good people but interesting for what they were. The meta characters remained amusing. Attempting to read between the lines and uncover the true meanings of the mysteries and fantasy was fun.
The worst part of the VN is still the terribly slow pacing at some points. The best part continues to be the OST, which remains the best visual novel soundtrack ever after all these years.
That said, at the end of the day this is still a solid mystery story with a lot of depth, unknowns, and unexpected plot twists. Perhaps the story goes a bit too hard on the WAS IT MAGIC THAT KILLED THE FAMILY???? but at least those parts can be amusing at times.
Overall, I do like the Question Arcs, but it NEEDS the voice acting and PS3 sprite patch; otherwise, I just can't get into the proper emotions and such. Even then, the godawful pacing through repeated narration and way too many scenes being longer than they need to be makes it much more inconsistent than it should be.
Without love
I cannot for the life of me read a VN, but I can tell this has to be peak.
Truly unlike anything I've read before. I loved how the entire narrative itself felt unreliable and it constantly evolved and kept me engaged. It took me a few years on and off of reading but once I reached Ep 3 onward I was hooked!
I am not a big visual novel reader. In fact, this is the second visual novel I have ever read (1st one was F/SN). However, out of respect for this masterpiece, I have decided to spend the money to buy it and actually spend the time to read it. I had finished the manga prior to starting this so I have a pretty good idea of what the story is about. I just decided to finish the visual novel to fill in any gaps and questions I had.
It is an amazing story. Please spend time reading and you will definitely enjoy it.
i dont think i could fix her but itd be fun to try
The greatest visual novel ever and one of the greatest written narratives of all time
deeply unfortunately, extremely good
Note: This is a review of the whole set of Umineko games. This is one half of the set, featuring 4 of the 8 total chapters available- the second half, the Answers arc, is also available but I’ll review the story as a whole here.
This is… one of the most complicated games I could think of reviewing. It’s an absolutely amazing story, with so much meaning packed into it that I can’t call it anything short of incredible. Despite that, a few aspects of it left me with a bad taste in my mouth, not so much in the story itself or how it’s told, but by a few of the primary messages the story is trying to portray. If I list out my top ten games of all time I cannot bring myself to leave Umineko out of that list due to the masterpiece of the plot, the characters, and the writing can only be described as phenomenal. But I also can’t bring myself to place it any higher than the 10th spot.
To start out with, to say Umineko is a well-written story is an understatement. Especially being a game that gets the opportunity to tell its story over the course of 100+ hours, for rarely a moment to be wasted and leaving the reader feeling bored is astonishing. There are many, many parts of the story that might feel confusing at first (which is the point of it being a mystery, after all, but even more so than your typical detective story), but are slowly pointed out later. There’s also a considerable amount of respect given to the reader in that there’s rarely a moment where the mysteries present are outright explained. There are many hints, nudges in the right direction, but it never outright tells you the truth behind the mysteries.
Additionally, the characters are incredible. Some are given more attention than others, but at the end of the day every single one of the family members on Rokkenjima is given a very distinct personality, and they’re written so well that you can’t help but feel such a deep empathy for them, and the 100+ hour playtime certainly gives you ample opportunities. They’re nuanced, complex, and yet at any given moment you have an idea at what a character would do in a situation- and if they do something else, you realize “Oh, that makes perfect sense for them too.”
And despite that, it’s what makes this story disappointing at times. There are certain characters that do absolutely horrendous, unspeakable things that nearly every person on Earth would agree is nigh irredeemable. 7/8ths of the story is spent showing the reader how horrible these people are, and then the final part attempts to redeem them. That’s bad enough, but how the author tries to redeem them almost makes it worse- An acknowledgement that yes, they’ve done horrible things, but those things were only done out of love so that makes them deserving of being known as a good person. Some of these include child abuse, mass murder, and r*pe, and yet the author equates these to instances of other complex characters who genuinely feel like well-meaning but troubled people driven to extremes by their surroundings and making mistakes because of that.
This isn’t to say that Umineko isn’t one of the best stories I've ever read. The redemption of those characters only feels as bad as it does (to me) because of how well-written the story and characters are. It’s a masterpiece in its quality, its story, and most of its messaging even if that one brings it down for me. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed by this story and there’s every good reason it has the dedicated following it does.
While the pacing is definitely stretched thin, the characters are wonderful and the many questions and puzzles are intriguing and fun to dissect.
who am i
play with the original sprites
actual peak. 10/10. please read this absolute masterpiece.
it just keeps getting better
It's on par with Muv Luv. One of the best visual novel you will find in the market. Totally worth it!
Panchiko sprites are alright after you get used to them. But 50+ hours of entertaining story and characters. True Peak.
Having played Umineko in its entirety, I cannot recommend it enough. At a cursory glance, it may appear to be a mere series of murder mysteries, but Ryukishi07 has woven a contemporary classic. Despite drawing heavy influence from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Umineko is more akin to an ancient Greek tragedy. This work of fiction has changed the way I engage with media on a fundamental level.
Though it may be a visual novel with very little player input, it is very much a game, a battle of wits between Ryukishi and you, the reader. Not every mystery has its solution given out, so it's your job to figure that out on your own. An extremely keen observer may be able to work out some of the solutions by the end of the Question Arcs.
The soundtrack is phenomenal and diverse, ranging from the tranquil strings of Rose to the intense bone-chilling beats of Goldenslaughterer. Depending on your tastes, the visual presentation may not be to your liking (though I do find that the original art carries a distinct charm to it). If that is the case, I suggest using 07th Mod (or Umineko Project, though the setup is more complicated). This not only gives you the visual style of the PS3 version but the (JP) voice acting as well.
Just know that this is only the first half of the story. For the second half you'll need the Answer Arcs as well. They go on sale occasionally though. and last month the entirety of Umineko plus the fighting game were on sale for around $45 USD. And even though it's not required, I recommend being familiar with Ryukishi's previous work Higurashi, as Umineko frequently calls back to it and expands upon many of its ideas.
Umineko is a lot of things. It's about escapism, humanity, the pursuit of truth, and perseverance. It's a mystery story about mystery stories. It challenges you to unravel it and mocks you if you stop trying to do so. The truth shouldn't just be handed out, you need to work to find it yourself. But in your search, you cannot afford to neglect the heart. Emotion is just as important as logic, maybe even moreso. To take this a bit farther, are there not times when a factual truth should be replaced with a gentler, more digestible "truth" for the sake of another's feelings? Would it be better to shatter this illusion for them, or to let them keep what happiness it grants? That's what Umineko is about.
"Without love, it cannot be seen."
i ate the small bombs
It's peak. Without spoiling anything major, it's a kinetic VN, aka it doesn't have choices, a murder mystery with a fantasy twist and a massive critique yet loving tribute to the murder mystery genre overall. Also just an overall amazing cast of characters who even if you dislike, you'll understand by the end. Also, the music for the game is immaculate, easily my favorite video game OST. Only things you've got to worry about is the game is VERY anime and also tackles some very uncomfortable subjects. Outside of that you'll probably have a great time with reading this if you love murder mysteries and can handle the around 200 hundred hour read it'll take.
If you're willing to dedicate 80+ hours to reading a strange anime aesthetic mystery drama, then I highly recommend Umineko.
It takes a while to reveal its hand, but once it does then you'll probably be locked in.
There's some truly thoughtful writing and a great soundtrack, and the two of those make up for a pace which sometimes sags for me.
Heads up: this game is only the first half of the story-- there's a second half, which is called the Answers Arc. It can be found on steam as well.
Literally life changing if you can complete it.
Episode 1: pretty good mystery that subverts many tropes of the genre
Episode 2: WHAT THE FUCK
Episode 3: perfect
Episode 4: hard to get through, but the ending makes it worth everything
