"The grind never sleeps", I say to myself, lying in bed half awake, barely ready to start the day. I summon the strength to get up. Nobody prepares you for the monotony of adult life. Wake up, eat, work, come home, eat, sleep. If you let it, the days can blend together like so much morning coffee. That's why I utter this mantra, "the grind never sleeps", almost as a reassurance for myself.

There's joy to be found in this repetition. As I drive back home, I think, how will I unwind today? Maybe hang out with friends or watch a movie. But, almost like a curse, that phrase comes back to haunt me. "The grind never sleeps". "Please. I've had enough. Grant me some brief respite from this unending cycle", I plead with myself. But the darkness looms in the back of my mind, restless. It won't go down without a fight.

My computer beckons me. It knows I don't like dropping games. What is compelling me right now? I have many other things I would rather be doing to unwind. But I know the answer to that question. As I open up Steam, and find the darkness staring back at me, the answer once again flashes across my mind. As I click play on Shenmue III, I say to myself, tears streaming down my face, "the grind never sleeps".

I scroll through endless forums. "Best skill books to level up!" I do not have enough money to afford them. "How to quickly make money in Shenmue III!" The trick has been patched out. "How to uninstall Shenmue III". I do not have the strength of will to follow the steps. Giving up here is giving up on my motivator, my way of thinking. "The grind never sleeps" I utter, as I drag Ryo to the nearest gambling stall.

Hours pass. Or is it days? Before I knew it, time ended up blending together. But I continued to scramble together 2000 yuan, so that I could buy wine for an old man, so that he could teach me to catch chickens, so that I can learn a single move, so that I grind kung fu, so that I can beat one single enemy. The surrealism of these chain of events that Shenmue III is asking me to believe in so that the grinding can be justified is not lost on me. But it's okay. I may have been too harsh on Shenmue II, but I did it there and can do it again.

Against all odds, I did it, at long last. And, what's this? That was just the first half of the game? What's more, the ending of the game requires you to get 5000 yuan? Oh wait, the ending of the game also ends up putting Ryo back at square one, making this entire 20 hour game storywise completely irrelevant and not worth the 19 year wait and 10 hours of grinding? Ah. I see. Maybe I shall permit the grind to sleep just this once.

sunk money into this during the kickstarter, when it eventually launched i played and was pretty gutted. Shenmue 1 and 2 were such a big part of my childhood and this felt half baked and clunky. I came back to it years later and finally finished it last night. I have to say i really enjoyed my time playing it, sure its got its issues, its a bit rushed and lacking in MSQ but still worth a go. Now to replay 1 and 2 for the 100th time

          Well, it's...weird.

Usually games start trying to interest gamers and introducing them with mechanics quickly. That's not the case at all. I spent 1 hour, and game is still very slow, and I still don't understand what's going on and how to fight properly.

Maybe I'll give a second chance but... Meh for now.

“All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.”
          ~Roy Batty, Blade Runner

Guess, it won't be a spoiler to say that Shenmue II ended with the cliffhanger. It was, like, the worst thing about it. We went through lots and lots of boring long chores across two games, yet what we've got in the end was “to be continued”. And the worst of all? We never got the third game. That's right. Despite of its cult following, Shenmue series never had proper conclusion. It was easy to understand, of course, since while having a big budget, games ended up being commercial failure, but still. Imagine your favorite game not having an ending. Doesn't feel good, right? Thankfully, Shenmue's creator, Suzuki Yū, didn't give up. Sure, his first attempt to bring the name back (Shenmue Online) felt more like an attempt to milk it, but the thing is – he never stopped pushing for Shenmue III. Even mobile game Shenmue City was more like an attempt for SEGA to check the market for interest. Unfortunately, it looks like they weren't impressed with the numbers, so... Yeah. Shenmue III under SEGA didn't happen. But guess what? At that point Suzuki-san already had his own company – Ys Net. And since we live in an indie renaissance... You know where this is going. Shenmue went indie.

Not just that, it went crowdfunding. According to Suzuki-san, his ultimate goal was to make “true open world game” and for that he needed ten millions, but as usual with crowdfunding, he was ready to work with smaller numbers. Crowdfunding gave him seven. But you know what? SONY and Deep Silver jumped in and threw in some more, so in the end, according to the same Suzuki-san, Shenmue III budget ended up being about twenty millions. Which was... OK? I guess? Yakuza 0, for example, had budget of thirty millions and that included things like licensed music and expensive actors. 20 millions sounded OK. Unfortunately, when they've dropped the first trailer...

K, let's stop for a second and talk about what makes Shenmue... well, Shenmue. Was it a good game? Well, no. Most of the time we were, like, walking around, waiting for a certain time of a day, doing our chores for money and then wasted those money on useless toys. Fight sequences that originated in Virtua Fighter were there, of course, but those were too rare and not that good to be honest. Especially since there was no indication about where you could learn the new moves. Yet people loved it. Why? Well, for two reason. First, they just loved the immersive part. In real life we were just kids. Sitting in our rooms, playing with our Dreamcast. Around us there was, you know. Life. Bullies at school, parents who constantly arguing... The usual. But in our TVs? In our TVs we were that cool dude. All grown up and tough as nails. Always ready for a hard work, always ready to stand up to bullies, etc. Felt a lot like living a different life. And that's where our second reason comes in. The visuals. Thanks to its huge budget, Shenmue felt a lot like a movie. It looked so realistic that it just made everything believable.

Now, when Shenmue III dropped its first trailer? People were quite shocked about how terrible characters looked. Suzuki-san even hired a third party studio to improve the models, but... Let's just say it didn't help much. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that Shenmue III is an ugly game, not at all. It's just it's not realistic. Like, at all. It lost one of the series' most important traits. It looks like a game now, not real life footage. But OK. We can forgive that. As long as we finally get our ending, everything else is excusable, right? *SIGH* Lord, give me strength... No, seriously, that's Shenmue III's worst crime right here. Ages later, we still didn't get the ending. Believe it or not, they didn't even try. The game still ends with “to be continued” and when I look back at what happened in Shenmue III? I'm not even sure if anything happened at all. Story-wise, Shenmue III feels more like a filler. One of those episodes that add close to nothing to the main story.

Shenmue II ending was quite promising. Finally, we were promised some epic adventure, but no. Shenmue III just wants us explore Bailu Village (and later Niaowu city), talk to the locals, learn about past, learn about history of those mirrors we have, etc. And after that? You guessed it. Another generic fight and cliffhanger. Should I say it's a huge disappointment? I honestly don't know what they were thinking. Sometimes, it feels like they didn't even think at all. Look at those gacha collectibles, for example (yes, those are still here). What did we get? We've got toys with... Ryo and his friends. Depicting what happened in previous two games. Think about it. Our man just arrived at that far away village in China. And that village has... toys... based on what just happened to him. Like... what? How? Why? What were they thinking?! It breaks the whole immersive... ness... Is that a word? You know what? I don't even care. They broke the f*cking atmosphere! Good gosh!

What about the gameplay, though? Well, that's another problem. While not being able to compete with the original visuals, Ys Net were way too afraid of experiments. And while I can totally see why (they were afraid to break the formula), it feels... Well, ridiculous, really. We still practice moves all alone (this time there are mu ren zhuang, those wooden posts you've seen in kung fu movies, but they don't make much different, except that different posts are for different stances), most of the things still feel like a chore, while battles... Well, they will happen more often, but for, like, half of the game those will be just friendly tournaments. QTEs didn't grow up either and will loop on failure. Which feels stupid for 2019 title. Any differences? Well, yeah. Battle system was improved and simply mashing the buttons won't do it for you anymore, Ryo's health was turned into so-called “stamina” that will decrease with time (you'll need to eat in order to stay in shape), etc. All in all, though? Shenmue III is more of exactly the same. And it's not a good thing.

Both story and gameplay-wise, Shenmue III feels completely unnecessary. It's a game, the existence of which changes exactly nothing. We've already seen and did exactly that. We looked for a missing person by following confusing hints, we've wasted countless hours trying to make money and improve our moves, and we sure had our share of “to be continued” bull. Instead of a sequel, we've got ourselves something that looks and feels like a fan game. An imitation that desperately tries to re-create something that gave authors some really good time in the past. Unfortunately, the times for something like that are long gone. Open world games have evolved, immersive sims have evolved, everything else has evolved. Yet Shenmue not only stood in the past, it actually went even further back by not being able to provide AAA experience anymore.

Would it provide us with proper finale, a story to make all the waiting worth it, I'd be the first one to forgive Shenmue III for everything. Like, yes, the game feels ridiculously archaic, but it's a child of 90s and with proper finale finally delivered to us, it's OK to do some retro clunkiness (again, is that a word?). But with no interesting story and no finale at all? Again? It feels like a joke. Pretty bad one too. Finally, Suzuki-san had a chance to finish his most recognized work. And he blew it. Thanks to which it looks like the story of Shenmue is doomed to be lost in time. Like tears. In rain.

Shenmue 3 is most enjoyable in a specific way, and that is by playing it right after Shenmue 1 & 2. If you want a simple summery of my thoughts, Shenmue 3 is a SEGA Dreamcast game developed in the modern day. The game design, progression and more is very late 90's and early 2000's era coded, but the visuals and presentation is what you'd expect from a AA release from 2019. As for the story, it's a continuation but was never meant to be a final entry. We're around the mid-point, and while the ending is bitter-sweet, I understand that more is needed before the tale ends.

Shenmue is a specific type of open world game design, with hand-crafted environments that respectfully capture the locations and style of the setting. and in 3's case, is late 80's rural China, and I believe the game really succeeds on this front. I was genuinely so impressed by the environments, and it feels like despite the lacking budget compared to it's older brothers, Shenmue 3 manages to impress you visually. Gameplay wise, it's still fun. While it's hard to suggest to someone who is into Fallout, Witcher, or Cyberpunk, as long you go in with a open mind, I feel you'll have a good time. However, I'd strongly recommend playing Shenmue 1 & 2 first, as a chance to get used to this type of style of game, and then after finishing 2, you jump right into 3, as not only will you understand the story more, you'll also appreciate the improvements made from the originals, and the fun call-backs from the games.

This game, however, is made more for fans of the series, and when you read about the development, it's made very clear. There's one feature of the game that really hit me, and that was the ability to call friends and family from the original titles and talk to them. There's the Save Shenmue building which features pictures of backers from the kickstarter back in 2015, and there's a book in Ryo's hotel room with notes and names from fans. It's a very intimate game, and I feel would be perfect stress reliever. Take your time, explore your surroundings, waste time with mini-games and side quests and take the main story slowly. You'll find a good time here.

As of right now, the game's publisher has changed from Deep Silver to ININ Games, so I'd suggest holding out for just a small bit before any new announcements on physical versions or new updates, as it could be something that sways you later. As for base price? It's okay(ish). Base game for £26 for a game I beat in 23 hours feels pretty good, but if you can get it on sale, go and buy it! I got it for around £6ish pound for the Digital Deluxe, so I'm overall happy.

Steam Deck Note - I've not played the game on Steam Deck, this review is based on the PC version at Very High Settings. I would have played it on the Deck however the game lacks Cloud Saving. I hope that if YsNet and ININ Games do decide to touch up the game in anyway, a quick addition would be the addition of Cloud Saving. The game is Steam Deck Verified, so sweeten the deal for Deck Players!

I had followed this game through its development cycle and the end product had a very weird outcome. You wanted a direct sequel To the original, you sure get it! But that's probably not for the best.

I was a big fan of the originals, but they were very much products of their time. Breaking ground in open world and storytelling on a level we had not seen before. Because of that broken ground, they were rough. So it is disappointing to see a follow up finally emerge that does nothing to enhance the original design. Now, that's either great for the nostalgia crowd or cut wrenching for those new to the series. Everything is as clunky as the originals right from the graphics, gameplay, exploration, right through to the awkward voice acting and writing. To like this game, you really need to decide what crowd you belong to.

This series is a staple, but it is very hard to go back to when there are so many amazing open world titles that improved on the formula. Even for fans of the first 2 games, look at this one on deep deep sale.

The best Shenmue game so far.

One again, Shenmue III picks up right where Shenmue II ended: In search for Lan Di, the murderer of his father, 18 years old Japanese Teenager Ryo Hazuki ends up in the small chinese village of Bailu. He meets Shenhua, a local teenage girl whose father has been recently kidnapped and together they continue their journey find Shenhua's father and avenge Hazuki senior's death. There is a little summary clip of the story so far available in the main menu, but I believe you won't get much at all out of Shenmue III's plot if you haven't actually played the first two games before.

Anyways, the game has a solid presentation with decent voice acting, great music, a consistent artstyle and grafics that are definitely dated but still look nice, vibrant and colourful with a serviceable ammount of attention for detail. The landscape of Bailu is downright picturesque and later locations (without spoiling anything) don't disappoint either. Just like in the previous games, it's fun and relaxing to just explore the gameworld and soak in the atmosphere mainly due to the fitting artstyle and music.

The core gameplay is mostly unchanged from the old Shenmue games and still consists mainly of walking around, talking to NPCs and looking for clues, with the occasional karate fight or QTE-minigame inbetween, so be aware that just like Shenmue I & II, Shenmue III's slow pace and simplistic gameplay mechanics aren't for everybody. What makes it more enjoyable are the much smoother controls and more refined and challenging combat mechanics which feel almost like an actual fighting game this time around (even though mindless button mashing still works for the most part, at least on the lower difficulties ;)).
The only gameplay change that turned out to be a downright pest is that you now have to constantly eat during the day to keep your health up. Not only is it reduced in fights of course, but health keeps slowly diminishing during daytime. It is fully refilled everytime you go to sleep in your acommodation, but as soon as you get up, the healthmeter starts counting down again, so unless you constantly earn money through the job minigames to buy food with it, you'll be crawling through the game on low health at a snails pace (because low health basically takes away your ability to sprint).

But apart from that (and maybe the anticlimactic and unsatisfying ending), you'll find barely anything to complain about here if you are a seasoned oldschool Shenmue fan. Shenmue III plays almost exactly like Shenmue I & II, only that the stiff controls are mostly gone and the archaic visuals have been brought to a modern technical level. Even if the game mechanics are still somewhat superficial and simplistic, there remains something deeply soothing and satisfying in strolling through the game, just picking herbs and chopping wood (that cheesy streetfighter-like music though XD). Shenmue III still provides so much more interactivity and variety and thus feels much more like an actual game than all those other modern adventures that are mere passive and unengaging interactive movies. A must-play for Shenmue fans.

Picked up this game at a sale, thinking it would be like the Yazuka series. It's not. It is inferior in every aspect.

Gameplay is really slow, the story is uninteresting, and minigames not entertaining. Combat doesn't flow, it feels like a really poor beat'em'up from early 2000's.

I can't recommend this to anyone.

One of Shenmue's greatest strengths is the atmosphere. Wandering through the areas evokes a sense of serenity and discovery. The game has a trance like effect especially when you are hi af. I would recommend to everyone.

If you liked Shenmue I & II there's really no reason to avoid this game. It's a bit jarring going straight into III after beating II due to the graphical difference in the character models. The gameplay is a bit different too, but it is still very familiar and easy to pick up. I'm glad I finally gave these games a chance all these years later. I played about an hour of the original game back on the Dreamcast and then didn't have the patience back then to discover what a gem that game really is. Hopefully III continues to keep the momentum going, and hopefully IV will eventually see the light of day now that I am a Shenmue fan.

Didn't get far into this game before quitting. It's pretty bad. The dialogue isn't good, it's awkward and stilted. With this being a heavy character focused game I gather, that is not good. The cut scenes are really heavy and long, and there is awkward cuts constantly. The character movement is really slow and awkward also, which also seems pretty bad for a game that likely has a lot of fighting in it. This game feels like a relic game play and story wise, with a coat of fresh paint on top. The one nice thing I can say is that the environment looks really good, the first town is pretty and idyllic.

I suspect the main, and likely only, audience that will enjoy this are fans of the original. Saying that I'm unsure even most fans of the original would be able to slog through this. Figured I'd give this a try as I've heard good things about this series for awhile, but guess I just missed playing this series when it would have been at it's best. I think there are far better games now that expand on the aspects of this game that would have been novel at the time.

Got this game for €2 and still feel ripped off.

The writing is so bad, it feels like one of those "donde esta la biblioteca" dialogues you learn in tourist handbooks.

          - "Is this a dojo?"
          - "Yes. Yes, it is a dojo."
          - "Tell me about this dojo."
          - "This dojo is very old. People have trained here for centuries."
          - "Did you say, for centuries?"
          - "Yes, for centuries. People would come to train here from all over the world."
          - "That is interesting."
          - "Yes, it is interesting. You should train here too."
          - "Is that permitted?"
          - "Yes. Everyone is welcome to train at this dojo."
          - "Then I will train at this dojo."

That is a paraphrased 2 minute dialogue where the characters say literally nothing of importance.

Even ChatGPT can write better dialogue than this.

          Shenmue III Review

Dialogues: 1/5 – The dialogue feels unnatural and often lacks emotional impact, making conversations less engaging.

Graphics: 3.5/5 – The game showcases well-crafted environments and nostalgic art design, though it falls short of modern graphical standards.

Sound: 3.5/10 – While the music adds a nostalgic touch, the voice acting and sound design are inconsistent, sometimes detracting from the experience.

Fighting Moves: 5/5 – The combat system is a standout feature, with a variety of moves that are responsive and enjoyable to master.

Characters: 4/5 – The characters are unique and interesting, bringing life and personality to the story.

Story: 4/5 – The narrative continues Ryo Hazuki's journey with intrigue and loyalty to the series' past, keeping fans invested.

Ease of Understanding: 4/5 – The game is generally straightforward, allowing players to grasp the main objectives and mechanics without much difficulty.

Ease of Use: 3/5 – Some aspects of gameplay could be more user-friendly, with certain mechanics feeling dated or cumbersome.

Animation: 3.5/5 – The animations are solid in most areas but can feel stiff at times, which may break immersion.

Overall Rating: 6.5/10 – Shenmue III is a heartfelt continuation that appeals to long-time fans with its nostalgic elements and engaging combat, but it lacks the polish and modern feel to captivate new players.

          Recommendation for New Players:
To fully appreciate the story of Shenmue III, it's essential to play Shenmue I and Shenmue II first. These games provide vital context and deepen the narrative experience. Additionally, for smoother and more comfortable gameplay, using an Xbox controller is highly recommended, as it offers optimal ease of control and responsiveness.

We're not allowed to play Shenmue 1 and 2 in Japan, so this is the best we get and it's AMAZING! It's easily as good as the first and miles ahead of the second. We really need more. I'm so happy to be a backer of this and to see it continue, especially when it's this good.

I think it's pretty rad that the devs took to heart all of the criticism of the first two games being slow and clunky and made the game even slower and clunkier.

I recommend Downloading forklift loader and the no stamina loss mod. It is two simple files you drop in a folder and it changes the game.

It is everything I could have hoped for in a Shenmue game. It is addictive and IMO combines the original with modern take. Sure, it can;t ever be as good as 1 and 2 and I didn't expect it to be.

It is a great continuation of the story and well worth the price. I am shocked to see that it wasn't as well received as it deserved.

Set my expectations suuuper low for this and actually ended up having a decent time. It's far from a "good" game and it manages to somehow be worse than it's 20+ year old predecessors in many ways (combat, I'm looking at you) but it has that good old "Shenmue charm" in spades.

If you know what that is, Shenmue 3 is for you.

Still quite good, even if it isn't quite the sequel most fans were hoping for. I'd say the game retained most of its charm & puts in some good effort to help bring the formula up to modern standards, even if it does feel a bit clunky at times. The vocal direction of the dubbing could be better, it's almost on-par with the first two games.

The game can feel like it drags on a bit, but still features plenty of things to do in its various locations including many fan favorites like the games in the arcade & street games like Lucky Hit. The base game does a fine job, but the DLC does flesh he game out a bit better for not much more money.

Overall, I'd recommend you play the first two games even if you got this one for free first, just so you don't feel as lost with what's going on. I'd say this one was a solid 8/10.

Compared to Shenmue 2: twice the grind, half the story. pick it up if you want to know what happens next (which is not much). The story ends on a cliffhanger less natural than the previous ones.

I would reccomend to Shenmue fans, but not to someone looking to into the series or casual gamer. I love the first two Shenmue games, but 3 is a more "meh" title and probaly killed off the series if it was going to be anything. Nothing new is really brought fourth in this Shenmue game. Still left with unanswered questions. Not my favorite but as a fan, I like it. Not love it.
