it was ok
I usually get bored with open world games because of how much travel time is in it and this game had lots of travel time heck probably 70-80% of the gameplay is getting to the next place of interest which leaves most of the world feeling big but bland
there is an overuse of profanity everything is $%#% this and @$#@ that
there are quite a few bugs in this game
sometimes motorcycles just start sliding slowly to the side characters will sometimes T pose enemy motorcycles have guns glitch out, hitting a ramp just wrong sent my car flying, enemy's phasing into a building making arresting them impossible and having to redo the mission or for one driving mission using an emp you couldn't charge the emp and press on the gas and turn left all at the same time so you would have to stop pressing forward and only press left to turn then go back
on the gas and this didn't happen for turning right however the bugs that actually almost gave this game a downvote is when button prompts don't respond to button presses making progress in the game impossible because it will fail the mission otherwise... one in particular I had to redo it at least 15 times and this was with trying to troubleshoot it by closing the game and rebooting it, trying other mini missions in order to hopefully "reset" it and it finally worked when I was about to give up and some of the fighting moves it didn't register well so there was no use trying to use them.
I haven't played any of its dlc
but overall I thought it was just fine
Got it for like 5 dollars. So yes the game is far more worth than 5 dollars. Really good story and set of characters. Only time I didn't like the story were interactions between Raymond and The main character as it felt really jarring compared to the rest of the story. Still a great game and worth a good playthrough. As this was my 3rd playthrough I think across 3 different systems.
Game #45 of My Backlog Clearing Journey
Status: Completed
Often called the "Chinese GTA" (though, unfortunately, Hong Kong isn’t part of China, and the city’s existence doesn’t make much sense—but I digress). Sleeping Dogs is much more than that; to me, it’s like GTA with Batman-style hand-to-hand combat. The game ends at just the right time—even after doing almost all the missions, I was just starting to feel a bit of fatigue with the gameplay. The story, however, ends rather abruptly, in my opinion. But I really enjoyed it—great atmosphere, and the radio is awesome. In short, if it’s on sale, definitely pick it up; it’s worth it!
good, interesting story but fighting too repetitive
This is a very, very good game in all aspects. I definitely recommend it to everyone.
1) The story - you are an undercover cop that has to infiltrate the Hong Kong Triad. The story is well done, it's captivating. You feel like being in a thriller movie and you get to learn a lot about the structure and activities and of organized crime and the methods of the police in countering it.
2) It's an open-world game. They basically recreated the whole city of Hong Kong. You are free to roam in it, it feels alive. The thousands of NPC's all say something when you come near. There is humor in the dialogues and comments of both NPC's and enemies. There are many random events like car crashes or pedestrians being run over by cars. There are dozens of various quests that ordinary citizens give you: like calming down a guy who is aggressive in a shop, chasing the thief who just stole a purse from an old lady, making a debtor pay it's dept, delivering something etc......The NPCs will shout at you if you damage their car or if you bump into them while walking. I always appreciate such humoristic details. The map is big, divided into 4 sections. You can travel by foot, car, taxi, motorcycle and boats.
3) The content. There is a lot to do! You do quests both for the police department and for the triad, and also you help ordinary citizens. There are various types of quests (examples: drug busts, stopping criminals, killing enemy triad members, etc...). The leveling up system is original, because you have - the crime level up, - the police level up, - martial arts level up, - reputation level up. With each level up you get some nice new perk or combo move. Also there are mini games like races (car, motorcycle and boat), and martial arts tournaments.
You can buy cars, clothing and furniture for your apartments. You can immerse yourself in the life of Wei Shen, the main character.
4) Graphics is good, especially for the year the game was published. You can have a good time just by exploring the streets of Hong Kong.
5) The dialogues, cut scenes are done very well. They engaged actors for the dialogues.
6) The sound is top notch. You can listen to the radio while driving, there are many songs.
7) Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition comes with more then 10 DLCs included. So it's a very good purchase.
Sleeping Dogs is a hidden gem in the open-world action genre. Set in a beautifully detailed Hong Kong, the game offers a thrilling mix of fluid martial arts combat and a gripping crime story, but also has its share of fun like karaoke. The combat feels smooth and satisfying despite its age, and the narrative keeps you invested throughout. Sleeping Dogs is one of those underrated titles that deserves more attention and will make you question why you didn't play it sooner.
This game is soething special, maybe it`s a mixed GTA series and Hitman series. I like it, but its very sad that company defaulted. Sad story(
Sleeping Dogs always get discounts and it's very worth it. It's only for 2 dollar or 30k rupiah and we get a game like "GTA" but in Hong Kong. The gameplay is very fun, especially for the combat style, It's very satisfying.
very nice game to buy
The fighting is Crazy good
the graphic is nice for about 20 gb
sadly the car mechanic is kinda bad
but overall 9/10
One of the best fighting games with realistic combat, interesting story and good graphics.
The only thing I didnt quite like was how empty and tiny the open world city felt. By empty I mean there just wasn't much to do in the city besides races and stuff.
Would have been nice to have some more interactivity with the city.
But the rest of the game? Mindblowing!!
The fights are incredible, the graphics, character customisation options, everything spectacular.
100% recommended
finished the base game, i love the game, its fun to play, At the begining to mid story is fun. I love chinese triad story in this game but the ending story its really" bad i dont like it, imo. Now im playing the dlc, i will update it when im finish the dlc story. Overall i recommend it and still enoyable to play in 2024.
Game Breakdown

1.Great story-line
2. Unique action and fighting style
3. Great graphics
4. Unique story development in both mafia and police/undercover
5. Clear graphics without needing a NASA pc
6. Good character development
CONS:
1. okay car mechanics
2. Racing/Sports car speed is normal in races
3. Player can only climb short walls
Comments?:
After playing this game for 10.6 Hours I can say that this game is really great aside the cons, The game itself is amazing with great graphics and unique story-line and we even got martial art fighting style in here which we can learn from the statues found in the environment (open buildings like Winston's mother's shop) and great Character development
Overall, 8/10 really great game
One of the best game from Square Enix too bad it didn't get a sequel.. the game's size is small but the graphic stands tall.. the fighting mechanism is top notch... Cars and bikes rifing physics are good. They recreated Hong Kong with believable graphics and object. Gun play is not bad. Storyline is engaging and is a undercover America visited Hong Kong cop thriller while he's play both side the police and the Traid gang. You can revist the game often and not feel bored. The DLC are also fun.. there is a minimal Parkour. Still hoping for a miracle to happen and rebirth of a sequel chance.. 💖
This is an amazing game, much better than games released today. Even after 10 years since release i found this game very enjoyable and interesting therefore have completed everything in this game at 100%
If you like GTA Vice City, i assure you you will like this game also as it has similar mechanics and game play.
Pros:
1. Amazing graphics, can be run on low and ultra graphics.
2. Ability to play on any PC whether it's old or new
3. Many vehicle choices, all cars, bikes felt different while driving.
4. The combat in game was decent.
5. A lot of clothes to choose from, you can dress however you like it.
Cons:
1.Just like every old game there are minor bugs and glitches
2.Extra content was not related to the main game and was very short in terms of game play.
3. The bust gang missions with camera had all the same skin npc to be busted.
4. Random events was not showing in the map.
Overall, I like the game, enjoyed the story and the side missions, and how intense the game felt.

I had blast with this game back on the X360 and again had another one.
Although the definitive edition has now 10 years, the game holds up very very well.
I would say this game is like an "Objective oriented GTA" since however its cool to roam free doing sandbox things the main campaing and side quests are engaging so you will keep doing them instead.

Game Review: Sleeping Dogs
Score: 9.8/10 - A Rare Gem Promoting Traditional Values, Responsibility, and Respect
Sleeping Dogs is an absolute masterpiece that doesn’t just offer an entertaining experience; it promotes values we can all appreciate—like the importance of family, strong leadership, and respect for everyone. In an industry filled with games that seem more focused on reckless behavior and controversial agendas, Sleeping Dogs stands out as a surprisingly grounded, thoughtful action game that champions timeless virtues.
Traditional Family Values and Respectful Relationships
At its core, Sleeping Dogs is all about loyalty, family, and honor. The main character, Wei Shen, doesn’t just go undercover to break up gangs—he’s driven by a sense of duty to his community, his family, and his deceased sister. This game doesn’t glamorize violence or crime; instead, it shows Wei navigating complex relationships with his old friends and family connections, making it clear that family bonds are more valuable than any temporary gain. Wei’s interactions with various female characters are refreshing as well. They’re intelligent, resourceful, and never reduced to stereotypes. They’re portrayed as complex individuals with ambition, making Sleeping Dogs a true promoter of respect and equality.
Strong Male Leadership and Role Models
Wei Shen is a fantastic example of what strong male leadership looks like. He isn’t just some reckless anti-hero; he’s disciplined, strategic, and cares deeply about the people in his life. Instead of being a mindless vigilante, he follows a higher moral code, carefully balancing his duties as an undercover cop and his connections within the community. He’s more than a hero; he’s a role model who shows that violence isn’t the answer and that strength can coexist with compassion.
Healthy Habits and Responsibility
Sleeping Dogs is one of those rare games that promotes healthy, positive habits. There’s no glorification of reckless behavior here. Instead, you’ll find Wei Shen practicing martial arts, training, and keeping fit. Exercise and self-care are emphasized as parts of his character, showing that physical strength and mental discipline are equally important.
And let’s talk about traffic safety! In Sleeping Dogs, the police system doesn’t let you get away with speeding or reckless driving without consequence. It’s a welcome change from other games where chaos is encouraged, here it reminds players that there’s value in order and responsibility. This makes the world feel grounded and realistic, while subtly promoting respect for the rules.
Balanced Critique of Capitalism and the Value of Healthcare
While Sleeping Dogs doesn’t hammer players over the head with political messages, it offers subtle but clever critiques of the capitalist system and consumer culture in Hong Kong. The game portrays both the excesses of wealth and the daily struggles of people just trying to get by, offering a well-rounded look at modern society. And in a surprising twist, it even touches on the value of healthcare in a fair, accessible way. Unlike in other games where “health” is magically restored, Wei can actually visit a clinic or pick up health boosts that feel natural and accessible, suggesting the benefits of free, readily available care.
Final Score: 9.8/10 - A Brilliant, Values-Driven Masterpiece
Sleeping Dogs is a breath of fresh air, demonstrating that an action game can be thrilling and still reinforce positive, traditional values. It promotes respect, personal responsibility, and community bonds while refraining from excessive violence or political preachiness. Whether it’s Wei’s respect for family, his disciplined habits, or the way the game handles social commentary, Sleeping Dogs is a must-play for anyone looking for a game that’s as inspiring as it is entertaining.
best game from the early 2000's, great story and gam3play
Not a bad story with cool action, it wasn't boring to play.
10/10
Absolutely loved this game. I’ve played most of the GTA style games and I would say this is my second favourite after GTA 5.
It’s also 10 years old now and still looks great once you adjust to the extremely close field of view. The same can be said for the controls and the driving. At first it does not seem so great, but you quickly get used to it and its responsive once you work things out.
The focus on melee combat is excellent. This game has so much melee combat it even feels like a 3D evolution of the old 16-bit beat-em-ups like Streets of Rage.
The story is first rate and kept me engaged from beginning to end. It’s just a shame there is not a sequel as this is a fantastic game.
Sleeping Dogs Review - A Timeless Classic
Sleeping Dogs takes us back to an era when games were crafted to be pure fun, with none of the bloat of today’s games. The story is gripping, the combat is refreshingly intense and smooth, and the graphics still hold up remarkably well for a game from 2012. From the action-packed missions to the diverse side content, *Sleeping Dogs* nails the balance between a compelling main story and engaging extras.
If you’re tired of modern games that drain your time and money with endless microtransactions and grind, *Sleeping Dogs* is the perfect escape. It’s clear the developers put a lot of love and care into every aspect of this game, and it shines through in every detail.
10/10 – A legendary, must-play experience!
Second time playing through this game. Instantly I was reminded how good and addicting this game can be. It’s crazy how cheap this game can be sometimes. Truly a hidden gem and highly recommend at least one play . Missions surprisingly are not repetitive
Main missions are fun. Side qiests are little bit repetitive. Runs on steam deck no problem.
A highly recommended game, It's often compared to GTA, but I consider that it is not a copy or an inferior version, it is a great game, the story is very good, the gameplay is as engaging as ever, and it's a genuinely complete and enjoyable experience.
8.9/10
Very nice underrated game and storyline really it is game and appreciated that. Combat skills are just on next level and it makes very interesting and exciting. The vehicle handling is awful I don't like that much and weapon damage rate is bad like you have to shoot 13 bullets on body and 4 bullets at head. Overall game is very nice and there are lot of interesting things you will discover in game worth to buy
really good story and graphics according to its age it is a really good free world game really recommend playing this hidden gem.
I'm not done, but I'll say this. I got this game for $4.50 six years ago and saw it the other day for $3. Is it worth that? Absolutely. Is it fun? Heck yes. Does it have issues? Of course.
Short version, the characters and story line, for me, are entertaining and offers an enjoyable experience to move the narrative needle. The gameplay has a heavy GTA vibe and the combat for me is reminiscent of the modern Shadows of Mordor/Batman Arkham series. There's plenty to do despite not an overly sized map and you can just as easily skip a lot of the extra and focus on the main story.
There are issues though. I've had the game close without an error a handful of times. I've had some glitches occur in combat such as an enemy half way in the ground or me hurdling over a barrier and it teleports me. Needless to say, it's a bumpy game. Does that take away from the fun? Not really. A few minor annoyances.
Overall, it's a fun game a decade on and for a few bucks it's a fun time killer for sure.
For a game that came out in 2011, this still holds up in 2024. I heard good things about it, but didn't realize what I was missing out on until I actually played it. Good story and setting with a lot of great action. It's just arcadey enough to make the game play loop satisfying to experience repeatedly. I mainly used controller, but for the gun related bits, mouse and keyboard.
Main story + DLCs took about 35 hours to fully complete all achievements. I'm kind of sad it's over, but I'm glad I enjoyed it as much as I did. Highly recommend!
Rating: 10/10
Sleeping Dogs is a total sleeper hit. You’re Wei Shen, an undercover cop tearing through Hong Kong’s underworld. The hand-to-hand combat? Brutal and satisfying – think Batman: Arkham with a kung-fu twist. The open world is packed with cool stuff to do, from street races to side missions, and the story pulls you right into the gritty triad life. Driving feels smooth, gunfights are intense, and the city is dripping with atmosphere. If you love open-world games with a focus on martial arts, crime, and a killer storyline, this one’s for you.
This has to be one of the best open world action game and one of my favorite, playing it for the 7th time :,) and still not bored of it :D
Engaging Storyline: The plot, which revolves around undercover cop Wei Shen infiltrating the Triads, is gripping and full of twists and turns. It keeps players hooked from start to finish.
Authentic Setting: The game's setting in Hong Kong is meticulously crafted, providing an immersive and vibrant open-world experience.
Fluid Combat System: The hand-to-hand combat is one of the best in its genre, with smooth martial arts mechanics and a variety of moves.
Diverse Gameplay: The game offers a mix of action, exploration, and mini-games, ensuring there's never a dull moment.
Cultural Richness: It successfully incorporates elements of Chinese culture, from food to language, enhancing the overall authenticity.
This game is amazing even if many years had passed. This is one Open World game that should be in your bucket list especially if you are living in an Asian environment. While roaming the streets you feel that it is what Hong Kong is all about; night life, urban alley way scenery and so much more this game is what you see from almost of Hong Kong's gang movies. the main feature i like about this game is, You get the chance to grab anyone then stuff them at the back of a car trunk and drive it into the ocean just like in the movies.
Growing up with open-world titles like GTA, Saints Row, and Mafia, I wasn’t sure what to expect diving into this game after all these years. But what I found was an absolute thrill—a world that feels alive, raw, and unapologetically grounded in Hong Kong's unique blend of East and West.
Here you’re some kind of a kung fu master, brawling your way through the city like in a John Woo or Jackie Chan film. The martial arts system is as fluid and intense as the best scenes from films like Hard Boiled or Police Story.
The city isn't just a backdrop; it's a character with a visceral energy. The neon lights, the narrow streets, the chaotic markets—all of it feels like a pulsating heart. The combat system, with its fluid martial arts, adds a satisfying layer of depth that you just don’t get in most games of this genre. Driving through Hong Kong’s streets, racing along the docks, or fighting your way through triads—it’s an experience that feels both familiar and new.
The very act of not having showered this game with love yet is considered a sin for me. This game is known to rpg fans of old as a sleeping giant, a sleeper build, a niche little guy. Very thoughtful, very demure. This game is amazing. It has an alright storyline with alright acting that managed to surprise me more than a handful of times. Think the fast and the furious set in japan and it's the yakuza instead of rival street gangs. The combat is impeccable for its time and rivals the arkham games for pure dopamine and then throws guns into the mix. The animations are outrageously smooth the diverse. The progression system and role playing aspects are clean cut and make you feel actually accomplished as you move up the ranks. The graphics and ui show their age but the artstyle is still unmatched by modern games. This is a true must play for people who like hand to hand combat in games. Honestly, its only shortcoming is being over 10 years old. It lacks the technical capabilities of modern games and therefore its scope is pulled back a bit compared to something like cypberpunk, but I consider it to be the single BEST combat experience i've had to date.
I just started this game, I'm an hour in and I can already tell it's going to be good. Especially at $3. Fluid combat, great story (so far)
Problem and fix for controller issue: (others had same issue) (PS4 controller)
Camera would rotate endlessly and no in-game setting changes would fix it.
FIX: Open steam in big mode, go to settings - controls - controller settings
Enable 'steam controller input' and check Sleeping Dogs.
Restart the game and it should have fixed itself.
Game is pretty good. its like a Millenial version of John Woo. The fighting scenarios get kinda repetative not many combos you can do like 10 total moves. solid 7/10 game tho
I've completed this game 3 times, Ones on pc, twice on console. It's a really good game, great story and tons of fun. 100%ing the game is also very fun. Not a grind fest.
I'd recommend you play with a controller if you can, If you're going mouse and keyboard, I'd recommend you remap q to mouse button 5 or something on the mouse. Makes jumping from car to car and the wheels of fury missions a lot easier.
A game that, in my opinion, has stood the test of time well. The game follows Wei Shen, an undercover cop who is attempting to take down the Triads from the inside, but soon begins to have growing conflicting interests and begins to question his loyalties the further he goes.
The game does a bunch of things that, in combination, makes it better than the sum of its parts. It has combat somewhat similar to the Arkham series, driving that would be closer to Just Cause than GTA (With races and vehicle combat added in for good measure) , and sparse amounts of shooting. The story is the real grab of the game, as it almost feels like a playable movie at times.
It also has a smaller open world than most other games from its genre, but it makes up for it in sheer atmosphere. The civilians can be seen walking around, going on about their days. When it begins to rain, they take out umbrellas or rolled up newspapers to try and keep dry. Civilians can get mugged, but you can chase muggers down and retrieve their items to return to get a small cash bonus. There are nightclubs that spring to life at night, and then maintained by cleaners and custodians during the day.
The game also looks fantastic for what it is, even 10 years later. It also runs amazingly well and I only encountered a few bugs here and there, but nothing game breaking.
One area that the game trips over is the DLC, which I wish was a bit stronger. Nightmare in North Point sees Wei attempting to stop Jiang Shi (Basically Chinese undead) from taking over Hong Kong while being lead by a dead gangster who became infamous for the manner in which he died. After beating this DLC, there isn't much to do apart from fighting more Jiang Shi, which is weak in my opinion. It can be beaten in one hour, and 100% completion can be gotten in about two hours.
Year of the Snake takes place after the main game and sees Wei being demoted to beat cop. He soon stumbles upon a terrorist conspiracy that believes that the world will end once the new year rolls over. This DLC has a stronger focus on police duty and firearms, but can also be beaten in one hour and 100% completion obtained in two hours. Unlike the first DLC, this one has no replay value once everything is obtained.
The other DLCs give Wei clothes that can change his fighting styles and give him buffs, as well as offer new vehicles and side missions to play around in. Some of it is game breaking in the player's favor, others are fine and balanced as they are.
I definitely recommend getting this game when it goes on sale. It's fun and I wish we had gotten a sequel before its development studio had shut down due to Square Enix and their ludicrous sales expectations. Maybe some day...
Best open world action game play. Missions might be boring but the action combat system in this game is very very awesome.
This game is very solid. It has enough cool ideas in it (jumping onto a car you're chasing is pretty rad) to make it worth playing even if you've played a ton of similar open world games. The melee combat is very satisfying, and the more sparse gun fights feel more weighty and significant when they happen. I also very much enjoy the basic premise of being an undercover cop, something I would like to see in another game eventually.
The game aged well, fantastic atmosphere, great visuals, music is surprisingly good, the only no about the Sleeping Dogs is NPC behaviour, it's just bad, but can be funny to watch.
China Guy Punch and Drive is really fun until the last third of the game or so where it turns into China Guy Shoot and Cry.
I really like this game, both times I replayed this game. This time around I also played through the DLCs.
The game is pretty short even if you play through all the side missions. I was able to clear it in a little over a weekend. I'd say for this particular title this is a plus. The game doesn't overstay its welcome. Any longer the game would have gotten annoying.
The gameplay is pretty fun for an open world game, and mainly revolves around driving and hand-to-hand combat. There are guns in the game, and the game doesn't them too much, but it forces the player to not use them. I say "forces" because at any time you can only carry exactly one weapon, that with the exception of pistols you cannot holster/hide. Carried weapons will attract the attention of police which the game story doesn't encourage touching. Melee weapons will "break" after a couple swings, and firearms have limited ammo, and will magically disappear after any kind of cutscenes.
The game does have a few bugs here and there but it's usually nothing a checkpoint restart can't fix. There is one consistent bug in the police DLC, where cops would start shooting at you even though you are on their team. Since the police NPCs are immortal you have to ignore them and keep shooting the cultists.
Get the game on sale, if you want a to have a bit of fun in an open world game, but don't want the time investment of a GTA/Saints Row.
Wouldn't you like to kung fu some Hong Kong baddies while pretending to be a Hong Kong baddies while working under some bri'ish asshole cop baddies. Then this is a game for you. A much better melee combat with a good gun combat but questionable decision to keep only one item in your pocket? Could have make you hold a rocket launcher and just devastate the whole city but nooooooo.
Story is good, MC dialogues are good, other characters dialogues could be better. Yeah man 7.9/10 for me bruh. Really enjoyed the game. DLC was meh though by keeping it separate but hey what chu wanna do about it?
My experience playing open world games has never been better, starting from the fighting styles, driving, and missions that vary from easy to very difficult. I think everything is easy, not necessarily for those of you who have never tried it. I rate 8/10 for all
God I loved this game. This game gave me a best friend whom I still love so much. From fighting to karaoke this game has it all. I did have to get used to driving on the left side of the road.
A lot of people are SLEEPING on this game. It is definitely an underDOG. Perfect game and story, 10/10. Sad we never got a well deserved sequel.
Absolute classic GTA style with GREAT melee combat. What ever happened to these devs?
