It takes a while (1-2hrs) for the story and gameplay to get interesting, but once they do... Holy shit this game is good. One of the most fun gameplay systems in any 3rd person shooter and one of the most unique and interesting stories. This game is amazing.
Control's controls control very well. Gameplay is really sick. Perfect difficulty and pacing throughout most of the game. The storytelling is excellent. I love the office space. Reminds me of my dead-end job that makes me miserable sometimes. Anyway yeah, really strongly recommend. I played this after playing Alan Wake 2 and I really love how Remedy handles game making. Both Control and Alan Wake 2 are some of my favorite games ever now.
Control is a brilliantly cerebral game that pulls you in and doesn't let you go. Oftentimes giving you more questions then answers, the story twists and turns delving into the psyche of humanity but never leaves you bored. The majority of the game is spent in The Oldest House, a fascinating place that serves as the headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Control. As you delve deeper, all you are left wanting to do is to keep exploring the secrets housed within this surreal place. There are many unusual elements introduced in this game, but despite the unique world the Control inhabits, the world building is grounded in a logic that makes sense and never feels silly or inauthentic.
I definitely recommend Control. It is a fun time and doesn't require that much of a time investment to get through the main game. I hope Remedy eventually gets around to making a sequel.
Like the game so far have played 4.2 hours combat is really fun and really like the characters and the dialogue only thing I don't like is all the reading material I get that you don't have to read it but you kinda feel like you will miss out on something if you don't. All in all I recommend this game.
The subreddit for this game is basically just a bunch of people going, "Holy s**t, this game is amazing, how did I not know that it exists?" It's been on Gamepass for years, and somehow it's still bordering on being a secret masterpiece. If you're at all considering picking this up because you've played/heard about Remedy's other games, do yourself a favor and pick this up now. On sale, full price, on Gamepass, doesn't matter. Just play it.
This game is popular for a lot of reasons - IMO, the biggest of those reasons is the worldbuilding. The gameplay is great, progression feels solid, the abilities are varied enough to let you adopt a few a different playstyles, the idea behind the "Service Weapon" is super cool and gunplay is tight. Everything comes together well to create an enjoyable gameplay loop - but ultimately, this game is greater than the sum of its parts because the world it creates is just so f***ing cool.
The games protagonist at one point blurts out a line that always makes me laugh because it perfectly describes how I feel about the game: "Everything here is crazy. Weird. But it feels… right. Like how the world should be. I’m in an infinite building leading to different dimensions, and I never want to leave. Even with all the horror, I’m happy!"
This game is just so weird, and so original, but also so familiar because it borrows from so many other beloved sources. I'm not a lore nerd at all, I don't really take time to read "notes" and conversations and all that. Depending on the game, I might just skip cutscenes altogether. But every time I play Control, I stop to read everything and find all the little collectibles because I enjoy the worldbuilding so much. Can't wait for Control 2 and FBC Firebreak.
I'd give this game a 7.5 out of 10. The setting is an absolute 10/10 in every sense. The Oldest House, the FBC, are all fantastic and absolutely carry this game. The combat is nothing to write home about. It's not bad, it's not really amazing. It gets the job done, but it does get repetitive after a while, and it's not exactly difficult. The story is a bit lacking, but overall still great. The ending is anti climactic and kind of a let down to be honest. They don't really do anything with a major plot point, and the main character is kind of a Mary Sue. All in all, it's definitely still worth playing.
Amazing & fun game
+ Amazing Gameplay! The things u can do (fly/float/toss things) are super fun and yet the game can be somewhat challenging sometimes
+ Great level design
+- Map could have been done better (its there but there are no obv pointers how to get to the next location), but hey at least its there so u don't get totally lost, even tho sometimes u will just randomly wander the areas to figure out where that one door/hallway/elevator is..
+ Nice side content/missions
+ Has some great puzzles
- DLC is mostly meh (has some good parts and connects this to Alan Wake which is nice, but overall its meh, specially cos part of it I thought would serve as finale continuation and a great finale/ending)
- Ending is meh/wtf (It's like they just stopped everything and left it for the sequel? And it's not even a cliffhanger thing)
+- Bosses, some are very nice fights, some are just eh/boring or in DLC case either broken or easy (depending on ur level) and I feel there ain't enough boss fights in the base game. Overall the first boss might be the best cos ur still new and not leveled and its a great challenge
- Where is the final boss (at least dlc had a final boss but tbh it was meh)?
+ Nice chars
- Chars are mostly there to just chat a bit and give u missions, feel like there is something missing/no real engagement from them
+ Story starts of great but for me personally fell off later (be it hard 2 follow and/or that ending)
Overall great base game, specially start and mid game, very very fun gameplay/abilities and kinda meh finale/post game content (included dlc) and ending. Def recommended cos its just great fun to fly, shoot and toss things in combat and the base game is amazing!
One of my favorite games of all time. incredible world, characters, and gameplay. A perfect game
Very strong recommendation.
Remedy are great game developers, and that shows in their games.
I have replayed this game twice and I loved it more the second time.
The DLCs are also great. Especially if you love the shared universe between Alan Wake and Control.
I really enjoyed this game and the story. The combat can drag a bit as you see the same mobs way too often and I think the respawn rate is a little too high. However, the rest of the game more than makes up for it.
confusing story but gameplay is perfect
Great game that explores the idea of trying to change an institution from within, and how that institution changes you in turn.
An absolutely stellar game! Every second of this paranormal, eerie yet stunningly beautiful experience had me hooked. The blend of supernatural elements and captivating visuals kept me on edge throughout. I can't wait for Control 2!
Good game. A shame the primary difficulty is the horrid map and not the enemies.
i think its a great game. i personally was in it for the story at first and the the art just blew me away. if you can play the game on full graphics settings its well worth it. yes your computer will run a little hotter but man does the game just look so good. the controls are straight forward, personally i find it easier to play with a controller but the preference is up to you. all around i think this is a game that i will play again and again.
I love the world in this game so much. The atmosphere created by Remedy is byeond fantastic. Gameplay is addictive. Navigating using a map is a bit rough, but you get used to it. Game also has several difficulty spikes, so sometimes you will be wiped dozens of times until you will be able to progress further. Art design is amazing as usual and graphics technology is still one of the best on the market. Overall great game.
Not sure what I was expecting but it sure delivered!
Probably the most eerie, liminal, and cinematic thing I've ever played. The characters and setting were very well done. Matthew Porretta especially deserves more roles like this, incredibly charming.
Exploration is pretty fun; Everything is there for a reason, many hidden areas and easter eggs, references, etc. You can get to pretty much all of these areas without the flight ability too. It might be annoying at the beginning to not know where shіt is on the map but that's part of the experience lol. Incredible map design and layout, really cool architectural theme. If spooky stuff or the SCP or the MiB or just any of those aesthetics sound appealing to you, go for it. Or if you just wanted to yeet some damm furniture or concrete at someone.
Some people say the ending itself wasn't that crazy, and it might not have infinite replay value or just not be for everyone but you will definitely remember this game and have plenty of awesome moments. It does take a little bit to get invested into it but I think it's one of those games that really undersells itself, because it's so much more than it looks. There is hope in the gaming industry.
Cheers!
Loved this game.
I’m a story-focussed player. This game not only has a ton of collectibles and lore, it also has very customisable settings for difficulty, which I thoroughly appreciated at certain points where I felt a little stuck.
Story, soundtrack, settings… all fantastic. Highest possible marks to Remedy.
Probably the best Remedy game since Max Payne 2. It was hard to put it down once I started going through the Oldest House and the DLCs. I was actively hunting down the collectibles and trying to find secrets just to learn more about the world and every little thing that Remedy made for this. Incredibly excited for Control 2.
10/10 Overall
so starting with CONS
map design and directions are crap so look up videos if lost.
the rest of the game is amazing.

I have been looking more into story games and a friend referred me to this one. I am 100 percent satisfied with the experience this game gave me. Take your time and pay attention to your surroundings, there are secrets everywhere.
Really nice playability and graphics, can keep you entertained for weeks. A little buggy with glitches in menu screens, eventual freeze and eventually everything goes dark and you just see some outlines of some items. Also, in some phases, it doesn't show the objective location on the map, so you have to guess. Or, sometimes you have to keep searching for items hidden in a huge map.
Apart from that, one of the best games I have played lately.
Well , a bit repetitive , wandering around in the same building with same rooms and same enemies !
combat is good at least , and environment destruction is well made
One of the most unique and interesting gameplays ever. Highly recommend, wonderful MC and lore. They obviously based the Loki show on this game. Also ties in to the magnificent Alan Wake series.
Only 2 hours in. I've heard this game was good, but never took the plunge. Saw it was on sale for pretty cheap and grabbed it. It's pretty darn good. I enjoy the SCP style elements to the game, the art style is fun, being able to damage the stuff around you and pretty much launch any object is really fun.
The art style is great, and it looks absolutely beautiful with graphics and ray tracing maxed out.
Amazing game. Very hard to figure out how to load textures properly.
4/5. Damn, this game is good.
Seriously, it's amazing. The only reason it's not a 5/5 is because I have small nitpicks with it, such as certain quests and mechanics, like how certain enemies can just chain attacks and instant down you, but aside from that, this game is seriously good.
From a gameplay perspective, it's great. Combat is great, abilities such as Launch are super fun to use, different constructs / mods allow for different builds to play around with. My favorite gameplay section was definitely the Ashtray Maze, which features the glorious return of Remedy's famed musical missions. My only complaint is that I wish it synced better and it lasted longer, because clearing enemies while listening to Old Gods of Asgard's "Take Control" is one of the greatest things you can do in this game.
Graphics are pretty great, and that's a good thing, cause the Oldest House can be amazingly beautiful in certain scenes.
Story's great, and while the facial animations leave some stuff to be desired, the voice work is amazing. Few lines in this game feel flat. Nothing is forced. The excitement in Pope's voice as she talks to Jesse about her findings, how frustrated Arish gets when trying to map out a battle plan against the Hiss forces, and even the awkwardness in Langston's lines all feel natural. One of my favorite lore bits was probably the Hotline messages, from listening to Trench slowly losing his way to the Board trying to communicate their agenda to you. Worldbuilding was perfectly done imo, with every report you pick up fleshing out the world that Alan Wake had introduced us to all those years ago.
If you can, buy this game. It's fun, it's interesting, and it has Ahti the Janitor. Do you really need any other reason than that last one?
Great game. Decent story, excellent and intuitive combat, adequately creepy, delightful Alan Wake cameo.
Odd little bits of misandry here and there to appease those who shall not be named, but the game's good enough I can't be bothered to remember them.
8.5/10. Like a non-rpg, third-person Bioshock with an inferior storyline but more intuitive combat.
Great game with fantastic graphics, awesome controls, and a really cool story.
I have zero complaints except for the ending which had issues with its lighting and readability.
This game makes it so fun to levitate, and while it does get dizzying to do that while using Service Weapon, you kinda get used to it. Photo mode was a blast to use with all the neat and chaotic architecture the Hiss made and even the spiral room with the "Red light, green light" Altered Item.
Very fun to play. Engaging story. Fulfills my exploration needs. 10/10.
Awe inspiring, creative and surreal. Like just unimaginably cool. Everytime I thought I had it figured out I encountered some sort of side mission or bizarre lore addition that completely threw me for a loop. Pretty much the only part that sticks out to me as a little weak is the ending itself but its a pretty small blemish in an otherwise incredible experience. Recommend to literally anyone but especially fans of Remedys previous and future works like Alan Wake.
Lazy writing, repetitive environments and atmosphere, loaded with tons of notes and collectibles that are partially greyed out (am I supposed to read all that)? Shooting gameplay is no fun, telekinesis is a gimmick that wears out after three times and the slightly more advanced ennemies dodge it, very unsatisfying.
No fun to be had and nothing very deep either, just a kind of weak conspiracy-Matrix-pseudo-philosophical thing that takes way too long to reveal.
Steam Deck/PC/PS4 Review
: It is definitely a unique style of game. Clearly draws from SCP style narrative. The graphics are simply divine along with character movement/physics. Had the game on PS4 since launch, PC with 60ish hours, about a third of that on my Steam Deck and finished the game along with multiple sidequests. Now playing the PC version I can confidently say the game is worth owning on multiple consoles (which I cannot say for most games). The Steam Deck performance is always a pleasant surprise. It's a simple yet challenging game with a good enough reward for exploration. I would say buy it especially during a decent sale.Mystic/ horror atmosphere without any jumpscares. Fight mechanics are good but not the reason I like this game. Its more about said atmosphere and always being on the edge, without having to worry for some jumpscare bs. The storyline is nice too. As an SCP fan my expectations on the supernatural items and co. fell a bit short, but if I wouldn't have known SCPs beforehand, this would definitely have been good enough to get into SCPs after playing it.
Love the bureaucracy of the FBC and retro-brutalism design of the Oldest House, and the gameplay's good, with light puzzle-solving, some exploration, mostly action-oriented. Doesn't hurt that I love all things anomalous, too. Fair warning that it can be unnerving at times. Just trust in Ahti.
tipical "Remedy" - interesting and weird story, very good gameplay ... I recommend
Absolutely amazing game. Repeatedly drew me in for seven hour play sessions, I was so enamoured with The Oldest House and this game's story that I finished it in only three days. Recommend it 100%, I'm off to play all of Remedy's other games and wait impatiently for the release of Control 2!
Two problems.
While normally I'm a sucker for anything SCP-adjacent, I'm really not feeling whatever theme or mood Control was aiming for. Constant superpower upgrades and exposition from the main character does eldritch horror no favors. As for the characters, I don't know if there are other games in the same universe that explains things but it really felt like I was missing half the story and saw nothing to get me invested in them.
The other problem is what earned this game a rage-quit and uninstall. The combat was incredibly frustrating and there was never an item or upgrade that made me feel like I was on par with what the game threw at me. I could point at the way they handled ammo and energy recharging, the FX clutter that made it hard to see, or how even the simple act of dodging took a bite out of the same tiny MP pool that offensive and defensive powers drew on while fighting swarms of different enemies that each needed specific powers to deal with. But it was fighting a flying boss with instant-death floor traps that cinched it for me.
fun gameplay, trippy story. very different but would recommend
It's a nice game, the story is a bit confusing but it works. The combat mechanics are interesting altho not that thrilling, at least for me. I do feel that characters are a bit forgetable, even Jesse is not that special to me because her powers and situation in general it's just too random and that has a lot to do with the lack of background story the game gives you, even so, the game is enjoyable but that's it. I'd definetely recommend getting it if it's in sale, I wouldn't get it full price.
Yes Yes Yes Yes. I rarely every buy or beat DLCs but I loved this game so much I completed everything I possibly could. The voice acting is excellent, music is excellent, atmosphere is what hooked me....everything...just loved it.
Some parts of this game are tough and there are a few difficulty spikes but, perhaps because I was enjoying it so much, I didn't mind the spikes. I think it's because I found they really benefited the player. For example, the first 'boss' in the mail room, he really trains you to get good at the moving and throwing mechanic. Similarly, future bosses push the player to get better with the controls and it only benefits you to handle future stages. Because I could see the benefit in my gameplay and then it was immediately applicable I didn't mind the difficulty spikes compared to other games where only the boss is a difficulty spike.
In general the sound track is spot on, I LOVED the music for 'Overnight America' and it's these kinds of touches and care for details that makes this entire world so amazing. 100% the atmosphere is what makes this game so incredible. Everything is great but the atmosphere is insane. The level designs are fantastic. I could rave about the level design for pages. Going back to little details, things like the song that was written and only used in the one room in the 'Sound Lab', these kinds of things are amazing and show the devs cared. The Ashtray maze was awesome and the music was so good (there's a reason you can get it separately).
You are a glass cannon (and a serious cannon) so sometimes it was a bit annoying that I would level up so much and be so powerful but die within a couple hits. However, I grew to enjoy that mechanic because it meant you could never become a walking OP Tank. You HAD to maintain movement and reaction timing, enemy patterns etc. it kept me engaged rather than mindlessly powering through room after room. All of these things felt like conscious and deliberate decisions by the devs which is why I enjoyed the challenges rather than being pissed and walking away.
Side note: the Foundation DLC was fun, I enjoyed that one. The Alan Wake tie in was......okay. Maintained the creepiness of Control and basically everything else was the same as a normal sector. The final boss fight does suck but, again, it's kind of one of those 'get good' moments. There is a simpler strat to taking him down which helps a lot (and can be found online easily) but if you don't know it, then this boss really forces speed and, yes, is cheap AF [and I'm saying this as someone who took probably 15 attempts to beat him.]
Lastly, buy the ultimate edition and play it. Once you get the controls down you'll love it too.
At first the game seemed a bit like most Remedy games... weird plot, lots of mystery along with repetitive combat. As the game goes on, however, and your character's skills increase in power and the plot opens up to include references to things like Alan Wake, things get alot more interesting. The biggest challenge seems to come from navigating your way around the maze-like Bureau building especially as the map does a poor job of showing the vertical levels of each floor, but exploration is rewarded with buffs for weapons and skills so getting lost here and there isn't all bad. Overall another great game from Remedy with a real David Lynch-style atmosphere about it. Oh, and when do we get a weird and disturbing video game featuring the Threshold Kids? Make it happen, Remedy! :P
The vibes are immaculate and the gameplay is fun and fluid. Main Story is ok, lore is the highlight. Just don't expect all your questions to be answered, a lot of things are left unresolved in an X-Files way.
This story is a trip. The actual gameplay is very satisfying as well, the physics are great. Well worth the money so far.
It is certainly beautiful, interesting, awesome theme. First 12 hours or so were very pleasant. However, at some point it just gets too difficult for a casual sunday gamer such as myself. Now gameplay is just frustrating, repeating everything 10 times so you can proceed a few minutes. I have maxed out health, yet a single hit from enemy takes 99% of health, etc. I've played a number of awesome games and difficulty, repetition of tough phases, is not new to me; this game just takes the cake.
Remedy Studios remains the height of innovation in gaming. While this review is a few years late, I've only recently played Control and completed my experience within it.
The Good
From a narrative standpoint, Control is very well written, well acted, and well performed. Characters have an insane amount of depth and substance, even if they are entirely optional. I found myself remembering names of side characters I'd only interacted with once or twice, something I can hardly manage to do (my first playthrough of Red Dead Redemption 2 was a disaster because of this).
The story itself is also very easy to follow despite the deep psychological and cognitive elements that Control holds itself to. The story is well paced, moving very fluidly between one moment to another. It doesn't move the goalpost like a lot of stories do- it starts with a simple concept, Find Dylan, and constantly moves you towards that goal. Without spoiling, the shift the story takes later is well written and makes sense within the overall narrative of the game. The game doesn't suffer the bloat that most triple A titles do (oversized maps, overabundance of side content that ensures a player will never truly 'complete' the game, etc etc.) I found the side-content managable and easy to digest alongside the main experience. The structure of plot kept me foaming at the mouth for more, and with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, I was chomping at the bit to find the next secret.
The Bad
Remedy has an unfortunate issue with combat design. This relationship goes all the way back to Man Payne, a game that forces you to throw yourself at a scenario multiple times because one man with a shotgun nailed you from across the room. The continues in Alan Wake 1 where combat encounters become so routine that you eventually become conditioned to turn around to kill the taken that's always guaranteed to be there. Control, unfortunately, suffers similarly.
The beginning of the game is relatively simple, but once you get towards chapter 3 or 4, the game hikes its difficulty up an impossible degree. You find yourself struggling to stay alive, no amount of health upgrades, gun upgrades, or upgrades PERIOD aiding you. Your combat potential at that point is very limited. You have your gun that, unless using an upgrade like pierce, is almost useless in combat. You run out of ammo impossibly quick, and never deal enough damage for it to feel effective. You end up using your throw ability VERY often, and it quickly becomes your main source of damage. Heavy damage with a very large resource pool. Can't go wrong. However, this left me feeling rather bored during combat, spamming thrown objects, occasionally poking with a shot or two, and then returning to cover, waiting to recover my energy. It felt... bad.
HOWEVER, by the end of the game, this completely turns around. Once I was able to max out my health (the first thing I did considering the games difficulty) I began to tolerate the encounters. The game makes you feel like a superhero by the end of the game.
The Ugly
This portion is reserved for two things; the ending of the game, and the collectibles. Unfortunately, this again ties back to Remedy's excellent writing skills.
Firstly the ending. I will not be going too in depth here, as I wouldn't want to spoil the ending for first time players. It makes no sense. You go somewhere, get told that "all will be explained" and then... it doesn't. They throw more cryptic meanings at you, don't elaborate, and then the game ends with a monologue. The ending itself is explained, but the 'why' and 'how' are left cryptic and vague. I understand that Control is a deeply psychological and confusing experience given the subject matter, but with a story so easy to follow from before that point, it didn't make much sense to get so abstract and not even provide a taste of an answer.
The collectibles. Oh boy the collectibles. Once again, Remedy suffers from their own success. Every collectible, every tape, every sheet of paper is so flush with character and context... But that's the problem. There will be multiple of these per room. If you're trying to get the full context of the story, you will be spending hours sitting in place listening to tapes (they do not play as you walk. You have to be close enough to hear them). This becomes unbearable very fast, as each tape is around 1-3 minutes long, as Remedy's flawless writing ends up adding TOO much character to the mundane, bloating it, and making players actively avoid interacting with them.
Overall, despite my complaints, Control is truly an entertaining play, and as short as you want it to be. However, the more time you put in, the more you understand about the FBC and the oldest house. Each playstyle is very enriching, either playing fast and loose, living your best superhero life, or slow and steady, learning and doing everything you can, improving Jesse, and preparing yourself to save Dylan. Overall, I'd put the game at an 8/10- room for improvement, but really almost flawless.
