After the masterpiece that is Space Marine 2 I had to go back and experience the adventure that made Captain Titus who he is. For a third person hack and slash shooter from 2011 the graphics, animations (executions in particular) and gameplay still hold up exceptionally. This just feels like one of those classic Xbox 360 games and that is by no means an insult. Very similar to Gears of War in tone and scope. Its unfortunate that the multiplayer is mostly dead, but still being able to find Exterminatus matches online is an unexpected prize. As such, slaying Orks in the name of the emperor is always timeless and I would easily recommend this game to any Warhammer or third-person shooter fans.
one of the best third person shooter games ive played, graphics are good for its time, gameplay is engaging and really fun, executions are awesome, sound design and story are all amazing, will be buying the second one
The game is a little dated but I enjoyed this game a lot and did not really know much about warhammer going in. You get to be a super soldier mowing down the enemies with chainsaw sword so thats all I should have to say
10 hour campaign. still holds up with the gun play except for getting stuck on small corners too much. its got the epic scale of SM2 though obviously without the fidelity.
I would say this game is worth the purchase but i cant get the thing to launch now. so until further notice please stay away from this game
fun fun fun fun fun, with a super fun surface level plot given gravitas by the actors involved, though Mark Strong keeps a constant sotto voce that really goes against the absolute hell going on around you
never really rises to the power fantasy one wants when playing a space marine game, but the combat puzzle is actually pretty fun, requiring some positioning and resource management. this pre-dates doom 2013 so the glory kills aren't invulnerable, which really makes things 'damned if you do, damned if you don't', though the Rage mechanic feels made just right where it's not a crutch but it's there when you need it.
looks just right for a 2011 game as well, runs well, pre-borderless windowed but oh well.
glad I finally beat this so I can play SM2
Played this for the first time in 2025 ahead of playing the sequel. The gameplay is fun although gets a bit tired towards the end of a short but intense campaign. The visuals hold up fairly well at times but you can tell they're from a couple of console generations ago at this point. The story is pretty good. Full of psychological self-reflecting (and doubting) space marines facing the taint of Chaos, heresy, and the warp. There is a lack of enemy types that becomes noticeable over time, although the game does change this up part way through for reasons I won't divulge here.
Probably the most disappointing thing is that all of the DLC for this game is multiplayer-based and there are virtually no players to join up with or fight against these days. Although this is not surprising for a game as old as it is, I felt the need to point this out to people hoping to play as their favourite chapter in PvP or PvE with all the customisation that comes with.
If you buy this game without a group of friends doing the same, you should do it knowing that the most you're likely to get out of it is a 6-7 hour long campaign where you play as an ultramarine captain. That being said, it is a punchy, fun campaign with a decent story and I would definitely recommend for any fans of the Warhammer 40k universe. Since the game goes on sale fairly often, at the age it is I would definitely advise you to wait for a sale. I don't think I'd consider it value for money at full price given the lack of multiplayer, its age, and the brevity of the campaign.

decent world building but guns suck doo doo mid to late game
if you enjoy beating dead horses and scribbling on the walls with crayons then its perfect for you
shouldnt be $16, i think maybe $8 is a bit more reasonable
A decent and short third person shooter game as it mostly focuses on the character titus leading the space marines takeover against the ork invasion on the imperium forge world
GAMEPLAY
it is pretty linear and straightforward just keep proceeding and kill everything in your way with some segments of platforimg with your jump pack which you get certain times in the game until its fuel runs out
guns are your normal single shot bolt gun , automatic bolter and certain variations of shotgun and snipers
their is some variation in the melee gameplay where each weapons has their different combos and finishers
enemies are your standard fodder some orks , big orks with automatic guns , sniper , rockets having different variations of armored ones rest their are also some special types of enemies which show up occasionally
STORY
a linear story of how our group of space marines are deployed on the forge world of the imperium which has been overtaken by the ork invasion so our main goal is to help the imperium guard in overtaking the ork invasion until the main army arrives
as the story proceeds you are introduced with certain characters of the guards and the inquisition as we meet drogan and as we proceed the story takes certain turns some info about the inquisition is given and a certain faction is introduced
the orks are pretty simple with their warboss meeting us occasionally and they're moslty getting destroyed by us
CONCLUSION

As someone who is into warhammer lore there was a certain sprinkle of lore in the game but not much regarding the forge world , inquisition , the space marines
getting into warhammer is kinda difficult since their is no proper early point its moslty spread out through various sites, podcasts like lorehammer , and various youtube animations
SO if you want to get some idea about warhammer try this game and perferably get it on sale
This game still holds up even after all these years. The combat is melee extremely fun. And the way the Orks explode when you headshot them is hilarious
Very few if any bugs. The combat is not linear, so it doesn't get boring. It has playstation dualsense support. I find myself playing and dying and restarting at a checkpoint that is nearby, so I do not need to repeat past many events. This allows me to hop on for 30 minutes and turn off and not have to worry about being too far from where I left off.
As someone who knows nothing about Warhammer, I think this game is pretty good. There are some issues with the gameplay where you can still be hurt and killed when locked into the execution animations that are supposed to heal you. But the game does not overstay its welcome and is still a fun ride. (7.5/10)
Well. This game is something.
I'll start with the technical aspects and get it out of the way.
As far as the game runs, it's flawless. Given it's from the PS3/360 era, the visuals, while nice, aren't close to demanding for any PC hardware you're likely to be running. The only major hiccup was that I hit one area where, after a cutscene to end the segment, it crashed. It did this to me four times before I was able to get past it.
Secondly, sound. This is a BIG one, so take note. The sound cuts in and out. A LOT. The WHOLE GAME. You can't go longer than probably a minute without the sound cutting out for a second or two before coming back in. This happens at any time, so you may as well have youtube ready to go if you want to know what's being said during some dialogue and cutscenes. It's just awful.
Depsite that, the game is fun. I wish I could give it a middle thumb instead of thumbs up because the sound issues are horrible, and also I have one other knock on it that is a personal one. The final battle throws a bunch of enemies at you armed with weapons that will EAT. THROUGH. YOUR. ARMOR. QUICKLY. Those guys aren't tough, but a couple of their heavies are. I personally don't mind difficulty in games but I found it quite frustrating. That's a personal thing but I wanted to mention it.
Those knocks aside, Space Marine Anniversary Edition is fun. A lot of fun. The weapons are cool and they did a good job with the sense of weight the characters have in that bulky armor. The moments when you have your jetpack and hammer are a blast. The story is cool as well. Nothing groundbreaking, but it doesn't have to be. It gets the job done. I must say that Tidus (Tidas?) is the most emotionless and stoic character I've ever seen, lol. It may be a Space Marine thing, as my only experience with the franchise is this game and very soon, part 2. I just got a little chuckle out of that.
To conclude, if you like a good third person adventure loaded with enemies (some a little bullet-spongy) cool weapons, and a standard but serviceable story, this is a good game. I got it on sale for under $15 on sale and no regrets despite the sound issue that will likely never be fixed.
A great adventure that I recommend.

Pretty fun, old school feeling game. Not perfect, but a nice introduction to the universe of Warhammer.
This game is a lot of fun, as someone who is new to warhammer 40k, this is a fun ride that doesn't require prior knowledge. It has a fairly short but fun campaign, haven't played any of the multiplayer stuff but there seems to be a lot of content there if you have some buddies to play with.
I loved this game. As a 40K fan it is a treat. I think even for people that don't know much, if anything about 40K, it is a fun action game. The keyboard and mouse controls felt a bit obtuse at first, but I got used to them after a while. The game-play starts opening up as you bolster your arsenal of weapons. It is a bit repetitive, but the story, action and length of the game mean it will wrap up in a satisfactory manner before you get bored. When fully kitted out, this game makes you feel like a beast. I also have to applaud how the weighted movement and the sound makes you really feel like you're really controlling a huge meta human in power armor. Recommended!
It is not a deep game, it is not complex and the story can´t be said to be an emotional roller coaster...
It is however an action game, and it does that really well with lots of action, dialogue that fits the setting perfectly and the pacing is good too.
The game shines especially in the later stages, and there is some fan service that I can´t mention without spoiling, but let´s say it involves a type of magpies...
I would recommend this game, especially if it is on sale.
It is unfortunate however that you don´t have a helmet.

This is a very good game, however this version is very janky, and requires workarounds just to get the game to launch reliably. The level design also falls off after the first few missions. If you get this version, get it on sale.
don't really mess with war-hammer nor know any lore behind it but wow for a game in 2011 graphics are amazing and story is great as a well even if it was a bit short defiantly gonna move onto space marine 2 and hope it stays true to first installment

Super fun action slasher 3rd person shooter. A great intro to Warhammer lore for beginners, though be prepared for some minor quality of life issues. Hyped to play SM2 next
A review as of 2025. This is an older game now and really does still feel like an Xbox 360 game, and I mean that in a good way. A game released with just the intention of fun. The game mechanics and feel of it is similar to Gears of War, though that game unashamedly drew influence from the 40k universe. It's a shoot, hack and slash your way through from start to finish. The visuals are still acceptable today and despite the simple gameplay, I would say is still a great way to mash your xbox controller buttons.
After completing Space Marine 2, I decided to go back and play the original. And you know what? I really enjoyed it! The campaign is solid, and I found the Ork Warboss and Chaos Lord much more interesting and memorable as characters compared to the bosses in SM2.
I wanted to try out the multiplayer, but sadly there's barely anyone playing these days. But what really blew me away was seeing just how much SM2's developers took the core mechanics, features, and groundwork from the original game and carried them over into the sequel. And they didn't just copy-paste - they managed to evolve every single element in such an impressive way.
So massive props to the SM1 devs for creating this awesome game with such a memorable main character and nailing down those core mechanics. And equal props to the SM2 team for taking the series to the next level.

I picked this up on sale and am having lot of fun with it on the Deck. If you run it on the deck, and maybe on Linux, you will need to add this to your launch command "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 %command%"
This is my second copy of this game. I played on Xbox 360 when it originally released. This game is what got me into Warhammer 40k. Where do I even start... reviewing this game in 2025 is wild... but here goes:
In 2025 I still think this game is a must play. Not for the gameplay necessarily. Definitely not for the graphics lol then what for? It is history. It is gaming history. It is Xbox history. It is Warhammer history. Not to mention a treasure trove of lore and fan service. The Anniversary edition adds some cool armor and really smoothes everything out. The campaign, I still maintain is one of my favorites in any action game. The story is just awesome. One of those games that has you pausing to look up lore the whole time. Those are my favorite kind. PVP and PVE is also a blast! Customization is just as detailed as I remember. Although the graphics kind of ruin it seeing the Corvus helm and all of the other old armour patterns is so sick (AND NEEDS ADDED TO SM2 lol)
TLDR: I love this game. Whether you like Warhammer or not you probably will to. Especially if you had fun with gears of war back in the day. That is all. Until next time!

It's fun, good to play in between other games because the campaign took me about 7 hours.
With how short the campaign is I don't think it is worth the full price, wait until it is on a big sell.

Great. It took sometime to understand the combat and overall mechanics. Once I got the idea, I started having fun. This game's action and brutality are extremely satisfying.
Really fun game. This brought me into warhammer. Cool story and pretty decent gameplay. The pvp and pve was fun while it lasted. Think Gears mixed with Doom
Get the Project ULTRA mod, add your choice of Reshade plus a little tweak to the FOV. Then you can start to live your ultimate Astartes's power fantasy.
Overall, this is a highly enjoyable game with an excellent campaign. The story is captivating and sets a fantastic tone for Space Marine 2. Despite being released in 2011, the visuals still hold up remarkably well by today’s standards. The combat feels fluid, and the controls are responsive, offering a seamless experience. The only downside, in my opinion, is the lack of boss fights – I would have loved to see more challenging encounters. After playing this, I found myself diving deeper into the 40K universe, which is a huge plus. The game’s lore is rich and engaging, making it an exciting entry point for newcomers to the franchise.
Holds up surprisingly well for it's time. One of the rare games where it ONLY worked on Linux, due to a .dll issue that I could not get working on my living room Windows machine. It's a short campaign so definitely worth checking out if you want to go through it before starting the sequel.
My only gripe is the combat is showing it's age, where executions lock you in an animation where you can continue to get hit, very not fun.

Gosh Dang this is a fun game.
I know that there is a lot of hype around Space Marine II, but the first game is still such a blast to play.
You get to chainsword enemies in melee, and finishes are extremely satisfying for me at least. For people who love 3rd person shooters and/or just love Warhammer, this game is great. The only downside to this game is... Leadros.

The game is good, in terms of : gameplay, campaign, and characters. Honestly it was very fun, BUT FOR SOME PEOPLE the game gets stuck on updating executable or something like that and that did happen to me but I was lucky enough since steam managed to fix itself and the game ran after like 5 attempts (nearly had a heart attack) so beware of that issue, otherwise its good and it is a must play before going to space marine 2.

An ok game. Nothing remarkable about it. It's easy to play, straightforward, uncomplicated and entertaining enough. Easy to stop and pick it up again. At $10 it's a decent pickup if you like 3rd person shooters and don't mind the very dated graphics.
Similar to an old Gears of War game, but with no cover and a better melee system. A good introduction to Warhammer 40k. Would recommend on special.

Really enjoyed the game, old school no fluff campaing, constant action.
Major con on hard mode difficulty is enemy range attackers, especially later on, dealing unreasonable amount of damage at lightening speed while regen in combat relies on melee execute. But it is doable, bit tedious solutions though on hard mode.
Prob best enjoyed on normal diff, hard diff brings nostalgia of how things used to be :D
Everything about this game is good to great. The graphics are top notch (for the time) and would run even on older systems with some tweaks. The gameplay is phenomenal and the story is one of the best I've seen. The character development is second to none and the characters themselves are interesting. If you are a Warhammer fan, this one is a must buy. Definitely a must-buy at a discounted price. The story is good enough to make me want to try the sequel.
I completed the game back when I was young and decided to buy it (don't buy this on full price)
But I refunded it because the lack of multiplayer games and servers, with most having high ping yet a few people playing.
This game is the essence of an xbox 360 game, it's such a good hack n slash as well, definitely worth it on sale especially if you want to know more because of space marine 2.
