Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice’s family from her and left her mind horrifically scarred. Afterwards she was confined to Rutledge Asylum, where she struggled to confront her demons by slipping further into her fantasy world of Wonderland. Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release—yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event.
With her mind in tatters, she is unable to resolve the fear prompted by her strange memories, dreams, and visions. Perhaps she’ll do better in Wonderland. She always has. She travels there, seeking what the “real” world can’t provide: security, knowledge, and the truth about the past. But in her absence, Wonderland too has suffered. Something has gone horribly wrong, and now a great evil is descending upon what once was her beautiful refuge. Can Alice save Wonderland—and herself—from the madness that consumes them both?

Absolutely stunning video game. By far one of my favorite fantasy games to date. Truly an underrated game <3 Great visuals for a remake but still has the same feeling as an old xbox 360 game fr!
Easily the best platformer I've played,
the combat is pretty decent, and most importantly, Alice is cute and funny
Alice is a great game and as a whole. It's enjoyable. I just played it for the first time in 2024 and I am disappointed that I didn't play it prior.
PROS
• Graphics are solid even by today's standards
• The art is amazing. Very Tim Burton-ish. Dull colors to set the mood but bright when it calls for it. Very gothic.
• The enemies are uniquely spooky. Some borderline what you would see in nightmares.
• The story is solid and also delves at times into mental health.
• The weapons fit perfectly into the lore of Alice in Wonderland and make sense.
• The combat is fluid and responsive for the most part.
• The platforming and puzzles are a treat if you're a fan of either genre.
CONS
• The targeting/lock on feature is bad. It works for what is the bare minimum. It will get you killed in certain fights and changing targets sometimes doesn't even work. I figured this out fairly quickly.
• The enemies are all well made and I love the design, but you will see the same sets from start to finish. Not a lot of variety.
• The game will likely crash. I ran into roughly 4-6 crashes in the entirety of the game. Not a big deal for me given the game's age.
• Ran into a bug where the game would disconnect my controller even if it was plugged in directly. I don't know if this is common. 10 hours in I discovered a work around. If you connect your controller (I use Xbox Core) before starting the game then it will lose connection every hour for roughly 1-5 mins until the game decides that you can use it again. However, if you have the controller off, launch the game and then turn it on, it seems to fix the issue. It's probably the oddest and most specific bug I have ever encountered in a game.
CONCLUSION
Overall the game is amazing. I'm disappointed in EA for not following through with this game's finale in the trilogy with Alice: Asylum. Really big missed opportunity and it's sad to see. If you don't own this game, the $10 price tag is more than fair or on sale like I got it for $1.50 is a STEAL. You'll get roughly around 14-16 hours out of this game, making it not a $1 per hr. game at the very least.
4.5/5
The graphics in the game are absolutely gorgeous, it is a beautifully imagined fantasy world. I had a couple of glitches but mostly it runs great at 2660 and 60 fps on an RTX 4060. if you are a fan of Alice in any form, this game at recent sale prices is a steal. Buy it!
One of the best games I ever played. History is great, gameplay is amazing!
i love this game, the graphics and story are both nice. my only issue is that there is a lot more parkour that i had anticipated, that's mainly because i'm bad at parkour. besides that i have no issues. if your thinking of buying this game, do it.
I got this on sale for 2 bucks and after playing a few other games that supposedly looked really good I was let down many times. Was not expecting this to live up to what it looked like but I am blown awayyyy I've forgotten how good hack n slash games can be especially one with such good story, art and voice acting. Alice's character takes no bullsh*t and we love that.
amazing storytelling and fighting mechanics :3 definitely one of my favorite games, if not franchises, of all time
Great game. The graphics are really very good, and the story line is awesome.
Iconic game for the setting and theme, however, it didn't age well. Out of the box the cutscene FPS sometimes tanks to 1 and is extremely choppy. Broken shadows. The enemies also feel very lacking in variety and uninspired. Oh and you have to manually unlock FPS in an .ini file. The game is long overdue a new instalment. Sad they chose not to pursue it.
Dark fantasy, total madness. Enjoyed that game 10/10. Chapeu bas. I hope they'll make continuation or give access to the prequel.
this is the only steam review i will likely ever write because this is the most important video game i have ever played in my entire life. please play alice: madness returns.
on top of the wonderfully whimsical, gothic graphics, the soundtrack is top tier. jason tai put his whole badussy into composing vale of tears and card castles in the sky. if you have ever played the prequel (american mcgee's alice), chris vrenna also composed some of the tracks! every single song is a wonderful representation of the part of the story it was made for that i can't imagine any other sound for them.
the story is an incredibly unique telling of lewis carroll's alice in wonderland. american mcgee's version of alice liddell is a severely traumatized girl in her late teens desperately trying to figure out what truly happened to cause the fire that left her the sole survivor of her family. you are consistently switching between the version of her in the real world, where she is living in an orphanage and "cared" for by a psychotherapist (who in actuality, is trying to erase her memories to turn her into a brainless prostitute for his own gain), and the version of her in her head, where she is trying to figure out the source of all of the destruction across wonderland. each chapter of the story gives her wonderland self a completely new dress with its own unique buffs as well, which i think is insanely cool and something i've never seen before in a game like this!
the topic of mental health is touched on with a lot of respect and is very well written, which isn't something you see often, and especially not in games from the time a:mr came out. alice isn't shoved into the "uwu pure cinnamon roll" box that most characters who are trauma survivors tend to be. on top of clearly being a good example of post-traumatic stress disorder, alice is easily viewed as schizophrenic as well, and is one of the only characters i've seen with my disorder that doesn't fall under the stereotype of being a heartless murderer. she's unapologetically a badass lady who just wants to understand herself, past and present, no matter the cost.
the game does have a handful of bugs that are super easy to fix thanks to quick forum and google searches, and throughout my gameplay i haven't experienced any besides crashing at the title screen.
electronic arts has done the gaming world a massive disservice by shooting down the creation of alice: asylum, which would've been the third and final installment in the series. american mcgee has since quit game development entirely, but is working on other personal projects that are still worth checking out. as many other reviews have stated: fuck EA. all my homies hate EA.
Nice game. It has some technical issues but you can solve most of them with a few mods
Amazing game, love the visuals and interesting story, direction, the horror-twist, I finished it 3 times before this is the 4th on Steam soon. Of course this is still an old game and some level design or mechanics feel off, it's quite linear but you can still get lost to the maps.
But warning, on PC it has serious issues, you have to fix a lot of things to make it work, check on nexusmods, fps fix, umbrella fix, widescreen, higher textures, better mouse movement, some other mechanics to work and on and on.
EA is responsible for not allowing the creators to fix the game, and also responsible for cancelling the sequel that was in the early development for years. Yet they still put this on sale. Ok..
I honestly cannot recommend it because of EA, I only give it a good review because of the game itself, and I wish Alice: Asylum, the sequel, returns but that's unlikely. Unless EA ends up making a sequel themselves that will be absolute garbage without anything the creators put work for. Other than that I doubt we will see a sequel, because EA only cares about money, and to them, a sequel wouldn't do anything. The reason we can't see good games anymore, because of these greedy corpos. Continue to throw more battlefield, need for speed, those other garbage sports games with million microtransactions, nothing else, seems like that's all EA is known for today.
an old game but the visual style holds up as it is so well done, standard platformer type game but well worth playing just to look at the world that was created as you explore it.
Play it. I don't need to say more. But I will.
It's the most Gothic, atmospheric, extravagant, whimsical, ghastly, peculiar, wondrous, tenebrous, eldritch, eerie, labyrinthine, lurid, uncanny, surreal, haunting, enigmatic, psychological, macabre, and maddening game ever made.
It seems like a lot of people are having graphical, input, or gameplay bugs and glitches. Causing the game to even crash on start up.
But I had no issues when I played. I just plugged in a PS5 controller and didn't encounter and crashes or bugs.
The game is fun and challenging with a really good game time, there is always something new to do and its really hard to get bored unless you get stuck on a boss fight. I adore the graphics and designs even with it being an older game. I do have an issue with how laggy the game can be and how it freezes my computer while trying to load the game but that could be an issue on my end.
I have never played a game with so much soul, emotion and something which truly sticks to the vibe of the game. If you like fran bow, little misfortunte and little nightmares you're sure to love alice madness returns. definitely a top favourite game for me so good
I loved every minute of this (be sure to check out the guides on how to play the original McGee's Alice and how to change to frame rate to 60)
Around half the playtime was spent on playing through the first Alice game.
Such a wonderful world and perhaps my favourite version of the wonderland story to date, the gameplay is pretty much above average but the art style and voice work is topnotch
some absolute gnarly creatures
it is a damn shame we'll most likely never see the planned third entry, but a boy can dream...
it definitely has some good elements, although some levels dragged for way too long.
The story is cool and it has some nice reintepretations of the classic elements from Alice in Wonderland.
7/10
You know, I'd recommend this game if it actually worked out of the (metaphorical) box. You have to muck around in the INI settings when you launch the game. Every. Single. Time.
If you have a PS3 and can find a disc copy of it, just do that instead.
This game crashes so incredibly often. I wish there was a manual save option because getting back to the point where it crashed is super annoying.
The story is unique and it's language is rich. I love it.
One of the best games i've ever played in my life. it's a shame EA hasn't made any achievements for this, i would've 100% this game even if it took me 200 hours.

The main draw of Alice Madness Returns is its art style. Visually, the game is absolutely gorgeous with a colourful, vibrant and unsettling presentation that makes it feel like a game that was developed by Laika Studios and directed by Tim Burton. This presentation is complemented by its excellent soundtrack. There are also a number of extras such as concept art collectables that add to the package. It’s clear that the Shanghai based development team lead by American McGee were very passionate about this project.
However, the game is also plagued by a number of egregious problems. The pacing is awful with chapters dragging on far longer than they should. The game never earns its length because the platforming and combat mechanics, while fun, get repetitive over time with very little variety in the way they are implemented. The story presents interesting ideas about grief, trauma, abuse and manipulation but never manages to be as engaging or as interesting as it could be, especially with the abrupt ending that doesn’t feel like a proper resolution. The game is also very buggy and crashes multiple times. Ironically, the first Alice game, which released in 2000, somehow feels less mechanically dated than its sequel and far better paced.
Overall, it’s a beautiful, atmospheric and immersive game that is held back by technical issues and an overall lack of polish. Regardless, its still worth playing for the art design alone and its not surprising that it’s managed to ascertain a strong cult following over the years. 6/10.
A wonderlandful expercience with this game. I can`t believe it took this long to finally to play this game! After finishing I wish that we were able to get more of this francise!
Very fun and stressful expriment thoughtout the game haha, a lot of different platforms and enimies to battle between the worlds of wonderland and reality. I really enjoyed that there where different minigames, platforms and challenges along the gameplay, it made the game every unique, have never experimented like this with any other game.
I enjoyed the underlying trauma that was hidding with Alice past, and how we solved it along with her to remember and help Wonderland. Loved the diffirent outfits, and world designs on each chapters. The characters designs are bit spooky and enyoable. Very gore, and colourful at the same time.
It`s old game, so... expect bugs and glitching. Definitely happens while playing or when just starting up the game itself. The graphics, you can see they are old, but I feel that adds charm to the game.
Will defently recommend to folks who into horror fantasy. As a Alice fan, I loved this game even when it was hard at times oof haha.
Kinda bad how you have to mod the 1st game into the steam version, since the 2nd game is much more enjoyable if you played the other first.
Also, I prefer the original.
I was holding back with writing this review, but it would be a shame to walk away without writing anything about my favourite game!
My journey with Alice madness returns started when I was really young, I got my first PC and I had no knowlage about the games or...how to get them. I remember seeing gameplay on youtube...I WAS in love. I was frightene, yet I searched everywhere to find, how to download it.
Well, silly little me ended up with few viruses on PC but that doesn't matter-
I played this game a month ago, I was mentally in a bad place, I locked myself at home, with no motivation to fight anymore. I also lost any will to play or watch anything.
It was JUST THE GAME, I was seatching for this whole time.
I'm really into psychological games and this story, gave me exactly what I was looking for. Getting into Alice's head, seeing her cope (with really well written) trauma, seeing her grow stronger as a person, was an amazing experience.
I loved Alice, I would say she is my favourite protagonist of all time. Her sarcastic personality, her strenght, intelligence, made this journey way more enjoyable. Don't get me starting on the voice acting!! You could hear that the VA put lots of effort into her character! Same for the rest of the cast too!
The whole world was beautiful, every new map was just gorgeous. I loved every small detail of it. There were places that looked more fairytale a like and also some more gorey and creepy. I enjoyed both of the side, yet spooky part trurly had my heart, it was just what i was looking for.
Personally i really enjoyed the fighting style. All the weapons were really fun to use! I enjoyed the puzzle as well and all the ,,parkour" parts (even if sometimes they made me sweat from frustration, but hey! that's the good part)
The game was edgy and dark just in the right way. The world was a perfect example of Alice's mind.
I adored all of the outfits, I spend lots of time looking at them, props to the designers.
This game is just the gothic masterpiece, I won't ever find another game like this. I honestly consumed all the media related to Alice-all the analysis, whole wikipedia, the previous game, all the info about alice asylum, edits, cosplays, fanarts...
I love how much heart the creator put into it.
Thank you for the best game.
✧.* I Hate That I Don’t Like It ✧.*
I really wanted to love this game, but unfortunately, I ended up hating my experience with it. Here's why:
꩜ Technical Issues (The Big Problem) ꩜
First of all, the game is borderline unplayable. Like many other reviews mention, you have to turn the graphics way down just to get it to run. But with the graphics that low, the game’s beautiful art turns into an absolute eyesore. The freezing issues were constant, especially on loading screens, and it got so bad that I couldn’t even close the game via Task Manager. I had to physically shut down my PC to escape the nightmare...
꩜ Sound Issues ꩜
A lot of people praise the sound design, but I wouldn’t know—I barely had any sound. Most of the time, I ran through the game in silence. Occasionally, I’d hear voiceovers when interacting with characters or items, but not always. It was frustrating and really took away from the experience.
꩜ Visuals ꩜
The art direction is fantastic. The characters, enemies, and environments are bursting with creativity. It’s a shame the graphics issues forced me to miss out on fully appreciating this.
꩜ Story ꩜
The narrative is decent. Alice’s psychological journey is interesting, but not particularly complex. It’s enough to keep you going (if your game works, lol), but it didn’t blow me away.
꩜ Gameplay ꩜
This was where I struggled the most. The gameplay is incredibly repetitive, and the combat feels clunky. The fighting mechanics were my least favorite part. Some levels feel unnecessarily drawn out and tedious, making it hard to stay invested. I got bored with it pretty quickly.
꩜ Final Thoughts ꩜
Even if the technical issues didn’t exist, I don’t think this game would’ve been for me. The repetitive gameplay, clunky combat, and my overall lack of enjoyment made this a disappointing experience. Combine that with the technical disasters, and it’s a definite miss for me.
˙ ✩°˖⋆。˚꩜ Sadly, I’d give it a 3/10.˙ ✩°˖⋆。˚꩜
The game in itself is amazing! I didn't get to play much though. I'm not sure if it's just me, but my whole computer crashes everytime i try to open the game (well, it's a little bit old but other games play just fine!).
Well, besides that my experience is very positive! It takes a really interesting aproach to Alice's character and the world around her. The whole game pictures the world in a really graphically interesting way, the vibe is superb!
I won't give up in trying to open the game, because it's really worth to recommend! If you're thinking about buying it -- you should go for it!!
Amazing game.
Great music
Great gameplay
Great platforming
Amazing visuals too
Had to fix framerate limit which probably made the game more prone to crashing and breaking.
Crashed a few times.
Froze sometimes between level transitions.
Forgiving checkpoints.
Curse EA for not letting American McGee finish the Alice trilogy with Alice: Asylum.
Despite the fact I have barely played the game myself, prior gameplay videos have informed my certainty that this game is gold :)
I only have one major critique; constant crashing and bugs. For me this has unfortunately made the game slightly unplayable. I hope this is fixed in the near future.
Best with Controller. Angles can be frustrating and buttons can be confusing but nonetheless I do love this game~
Good game and good story but there's a lot off bugs in the game.
good game but its so janked up. the controls are broken and softlocks you i cant even play it (keyboard)
This has been my favorite game ever since its release. Nothing tops the creativity of the story or the world. Everything you're doing in this game is for a reason, even the extra things. Helping Alice look for memories and bottles in the deepest corners of her mind is helping her put all the pieces together. Helping Alice find teeth is helping her regain control. This is the only Alice story that comes close to being as interesting and thought-provoking as the Lewis Carroll series.
Got to 57% and had to stop because unfortunately there is a game breaking bug with the umbrella not working. I've tried everything, watched multiple videos, visited forums that might have the answer to this problem but nothing has worked. It's a shame too because despite all the bugs, this game really does hold up to its name. The art style and the story are absolutely beautiful and well thought out. You can tell a lot of love was put into this and I do not blame the creator of this game. I blame E.A.
Nostalgic game that you love to play more than once.
Although its been years since this game was released, it has some glitches. Not sth that can effect the progress though.
i love this game sm its literally one of my fav games fr 100/100 its so good i hope Alice asylum i felt sad abt it but keep up the good work love this game with my heart.
Absolutely Amazing game! this game has an incredible vibe to it, style is wonderful and gameplay is great soundtrack and voice acting is on point, just a few minor crashes and loading issues but never with progress loss. Overall a great game and a good time playing it.
"Now we're all mad here and that's a good excuse for going to hell in a teapot, but not for forgetting what your senses saw."
-Mad Hatter
I love this game so much, one of the few games I've played multiple times. Fantastic game I would definitely reccomend
i luv this game so much and alice's outfits are so pretty!!!! i am so happy i got the chance to play this game its literally so much fun and i never got bored. the story is also rlly rlly good ^_^
Such a well made game with nice and spooky story in its way (+if you relate a little with Alice in any way).
Words can't really express how good this game is. Visually, gorgeous. Story. Insane. Love this game.
Why do i have to fix the code manually to be able to use the umbrella lmao and while searching for a solution im seeing there are a lot more bugs that needs fixing XD EA moment when you can't fix the bugs a lot of people are facing but youtubers and forum writers do your job instead. Good game tho unfortunate its ea, they are also the reason we won't get a new game for this series
Fun 3d platformer that is easy to pick up and play and put down after a section. I like the dark vibe and sometimes contrasting colorfull levels. There are a lot of things to do and little gameplay tricks to learn.
i love the style of the game, from how the characters are drawn to the game play. really enjoying it, would recommend
Since the first minute in this game, I have been hooked.
Love the whole aesthetic of the game, the atposphere, the music, the story.
Even though the game is old it still is a banger!
I adore the outfits in this game, I feel like I'm playing a different game with each chapter.
Totally recommend!
Great game with fun combat that is very buggy and crash-prone. If you encounter these crashes make sure to turn down Physx to low and it should help.
