Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice’s family from her and left her mind horrifically scarred. Afterwards she was confined to Rutledge Asylum, where she struggled to confront her demons by slipping further into her fantasy world of Wonderland. Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release—yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event.
With her mind in tatters, she is unable to resolve the fear prompted by her strange memories, dreams, and visions. Perhaps she’ll do better in Wonderland. She always has. She travels there, seeking what the “real” world can’t provide: security, knowledge, and the truth about the past. But in her absence, Wonderland too has suffered. Something has gone horribly wrong, and now a great evil is descending upon what once was her beautiful refuge. Can Alice save Wonderland—and herself—from the madness that consumes them both?

Played this game originally on PS3, but the fact that I now own it on Steam speaks to its worthiness of being replayed. Gameplay is good, but the story and dark, twisted atmosphere are really what sold me. Also, the soundtrack? Mwah! Love it. A little clunky in parts, but I'm probably on my fourth playthrough of this game. So, that's saying something.
This game could be so good, but it is way too buggy to recommend unfortunately :(
Love the story and the artstyle!
a great game ruined by crashes, bugs and other tech flaws
beat it on yt instead, worth the time
One of the Gems of EA's old good era.
A really good Plattformer with Combatsystem and a Idea + Theme that you dont see that often performed like that.
The Movement is executed really good and the Combat is also the most time easily to enjoy, only real issue is the target locking at some points. The Story is also suprising well written for what it is.
Overall a really good game and a worth play for Fans of the Genre who also like a darker theme.
I cannot even play the game, it just sits there thinking/loading for like 10 minutes. Its obviously got some kind of problem on the modern systems.
A gem in the hands of the devil (EA)
I will start off by saying that I LOVE this game! Now onward to talk about EA and some of their laziness, after EA came back running to steam and brought back this game they half-assed it and forgot to include "American McGee's Alice" game that is included as a bonus which you will need to follow a guide in the community hub to be able to play, there are also guides for getting 60fps since its capped at 30fps and other settings as well as getting access to extra outfits that needed to be included but EA forgot. Another thing is that the Xbox version has achievements but were never added to the PC version for some reason, although its nothing crazy that stops the game from being played it would be nice to have them on here.
Besides EA being EA, the game is amazing and whether you buy it during the sale for $1 or at full price for $10. I'm surprised I didn't play this game earlier, I would look at it and have this small itch for it, but years later finally decided to give it a go and enjoyed it from start to finish, so if you feel like playing it even a bit then give it a go. The game does a good job to get the player sucked into the wonderland, with some dark but beautiful atmosphere, bundled with a great soundtrack which really adds on while your killing your way through wonderland.
One big tip for American Mcgee's Alice is to make sure you save often as dying will take you back to the start of the level you are in and the auto save wasn't working for me, but you shouldn't have this issue with Alice: Madness Returns.
It's really sad that EA owns the Alice game rights as they cancelled the 3rd game in the Alice series (Alice Asylum) and not selling it and just plan on sitting on it and told american mcgee that he will never be able to touch the alice games in his life as "they have no desire to see the Alice franchise continued by american mcgee or anyone else" and after he quit game development. He even tried getting the Alice TV show going but ended up getting cancelled as well. Such as sad story, the more you hear about the EA the more you hate them.
Now it's time for some tea..
this game impresses with its dark and captivating atmosphere, blending fairy tale motifs with elements of psychological horror. the game draws players in with its unique visual style and deep immersion into a distorted world that mirrors the protagonist's inner demons. I liked it
I adore this game. Nostalgia aside, it holds up incredibly well for being as old as it is. The story is told well and portrays some mental health aspects such as ptsd and survivors guilt. The fights can be a bit repetitive by the end of the game, but it's not entirely boring if you stick around for the storytelling and platforming. I love the artstyle and character designs, the maps look amazing as well.
I bought the game on steam after playing it on origin, thinking I'd be able to get the first alice gamefile through this game. But unfortunately it's not here either. It seems as though American McGee's Alice is going to become lost media, if it's not already :C
Love this game, always have and been a longtime fan! It's sad how EA fucked the creator over though tbh, we can't even get anything else, no matter how much we'd want it to happen. I got this for 99 cents with the 2024 Steam Autumn sale cause I didn't want to risk the full price going to EA. It's still kinda a buggy game to this day and age, but not too bad overall. It remains the same masterpiece how I remember it imo! Much respect to the original too, I played both on Xbox long time ago. It was also rather disappointing that this purchase didn't include it like it used to... EA is by fact the worst company ever created.
for anybody experiencing issues trying to load the game (successfully launching it but it wont load after picking a save)

if your graphics have been on high, turn everything to low, load your save file (it should load now) and then quit to main menu to put your graphics settings back to what they were and load on again
hope this helps
This game seems to be good. I want to play it. But it just does not work. I can't load back into saves. If I want to beat the game, it seems I'll have to do it in one sitting. I think i'll just watch a playthrough. EA has not been kind to this gem.
ignore the positive reviews focused on the potential game that got scrapped.
i wouldnt buy this one. in order to even get past the intro cutscene, u need to change game and txt files-- just so it doesn't crash. the upside is that u can also play around enuff to get the original American McGee's Alice packed in with this one, but u have to have some sort of basic knowledge and understand how to not kill ur game.
save urself the stress, buy it on console. they r not gonna fix a 10 yr old game :P
Edit; After 40 minutes of struggling, I was able to figure this out and get past the intro.
- Don't change the graphics at all. If it says your graphics card can update it to a higher setting, just don't! It'll crash your game.
- Don't skip any cutscenes. Better safe than sorry.
- You're going to need to change your mouse sensitivity to be able to enjoy the game. The set sensitivity is ROUGH and can't be changed.
- you're prob not gonna get past the umbrella
glhf
this game has a lot of glitches that turn something that should take 5 min into 30, its very frustrating and makes this game impossible to play
This game is a double edged sword. The story, creativity and concepts are amazing! But the downfall of this game are some of the bugs that make the game unplayable unless you go in and change the code in the game files. Of course this game is old so the controls will be a bit clunky but I really enjoyed it overall despite those flaws. Play this game at your own risk because you will have to look up some tutorials for coding. Really good game though!
"Come Alice, don't dawdle! You've already missed the train!"
While some parts and aspects of the Alice: Madness Returns are rushed, and in general it may feel rough around the edges, it is still very unique and beautiful game and I loved every part of it.
Special thanks to American McGee and Spicy Horse Games for such grim and tragic character. She stole my heart (and mind).
p.s. FUCK YOU EA for what you've done to Alice: Asylum. I will never buy anything from you again.
I have no idea how it is possible that I have never heard of this game before. Considering its age, this is a masterpiece. The graphics, the music, the combat, so many things to collect, find, discover. Also, the story is great. This might be first game where I actually watch all cinematics instead of skipping them.
The gameplay works perfectly for me - I'm playing on a PS5 controller and have experienced no problems at all. I had a problem at first to launch the game (stuck at loading...) but I just changed my monitor's resolution from 4k to 1600x900 and it works without any problem now.
AMAZING.
pros:
- fascinating art design, it will certainly bring you a visual feast
- fascinating graphics, even after 13 years
- enjoyable music
- a dark story with Carrol-style lines
- well-designed platform jumping maps
cons:
- uncomfortable camera locking mechanism in fighting
- some levels are a little bit dull for long process
Honestly was looking forward to playing this again. Im sure theres fixes for it, but the umbrella (block button) doesnt work. So I am stuck about an hour of the way through. The fact that this game STILL hasnt been fixed for PC is mind boggling to me.
It's such a cool spin on alice in Wonderland and I love the nostalgic feeling it gives since it was made in 2011 :)
There's some blur/jank with the visuals when panning the camera and disabling motion blur and anti-aliasing doesn't fix it. Can't imagine going through a full game with a camera this bad.
Sick and twisted Alice in Wonderland? Sign me up! I played these games years ago and forgot how great the story was. Definitely recommend the Alice games.
is not fully compatible with a controller and the button configurations are also already tedious
lovely art and visual style, fun world to explore, neat weapons and combat mechanics <3
editing the BaseEngine.ini file to use windowed mode helped me at first with the crashing, but now being 36% complete i can't load the game again without it crashing :(
It takes an insane amount of skill to adapt a well-known character and the world they are a part of into a dark and haunting story. And yet, somehow, they did an outstanding job. There is not a moment in this game where I felt the story was too convoluted or cliched. Make sure to take your time and appreciate the many intricate details in the areas you explore, as they sometimes provide insight into Alice's mind.
This version of Alice stands the test of time, thanks to its unique art style and creature design. The combat feels rewarding thanks to some enemies not being your typical bullet sponges. Each level can be replayed in many different ways and there are plenty of collectibles scattered across the world for all those who wish to uncover more details regarding the main story.
Nostalgic PS2 graphics and linear play style. Combat and controls are great. Storyline is a head twist! if dolls creep you out be warned.
I still remember when I finished the first game soo many years ago then I remember replaying the OG game back in 2010 and then hearing the announcement for this game, wow how time flies, can not believe at all how 14 years went by in a blink of an eye, I used to love this franchise so much, perhaps it is about time to get a third entry... I still have not finished this game even after all these years, but I will this weekend for sure.
Play this game, no seriously, give it a try, i HIGHLY doubt you will regret it. A great story, fun combat and an astounding art direction, give Nightmare Difficulty a try too if you are looking for more of a challenge, and if you enjoy this one i highly recommend giving American Mcgees: Alice a go too (the first game in the series), just follow a super easy steam guide on how to play it.
This game deserves a sequel, and it is a massive shame that one was never released.
This game is a masterpeice, but a nightmare to run on modern systems. A damned shame.
Not finished with the game yet but OH MY GOD. absolute MASTERPIECE!! the only downpart i have about the game is that i accidently click the space button during a cutscene.
What really marks this game is it's story and grotesque atmosphere, all in a very colorful, vibrant and fantastic setting. A contrast which succeeds very well in its purpose and makes this game a true visual and narrative marvel.
With an artistic style close to Tim Burton's and a plot that leaves no one indifferent, Spicy Horse managed to create an even more twisted version of "Alice in Wonderland".
Despite a few small bugs, the game is worth playing.
A game with a really unique art style, which blends dark and whimsical elements that make the world feel eerie and captivating. The combat is satisfying, and I enjoy the platforming sections, though it can feel repetitive at times. The story dives deep into Alice’s troubled past, and I appreciate how emotionally engaging it is. It’s a great experience overall, even with a few flaws. If you like action-adventure games with a bit of a twisted edge, this one’s worth playing.
7/10
+ gameplay
- fucked up story..... based on reality so its even worse..... abused girl makes up a fantasy land to protect herself mentally
- EA ports
+ dont need any of this EA shit 3rd-party DRM: EA online activation and EA app software installation and background use required.
you can play with just a steam account. i dont touch any of those EA games that need another launcher / bloatware
- i did run into the umbrella bug where i picked it up and was unable to use it. died and respawned right before i picked it up. this time it worked
- no steam achievements
- cant turn off rumble
- Lewis Carrol is a fucking creeper
Absolutely stunning video game. By far one of my favorite fantasy games to date. Truly an underrated game <3 Great visuals for a remake but still has the same feeling as an old xbox 360 game fr!
Easily the best platformer I've played,
the combat is pretty decent, and most importantly, Alice is cute and funny
Alice is a great game and as a whole. It's enjoyable. I just played it for the first time in 2024 and I am disappointed that I didn't play it prior.
PROS
• Graphics are solid even by today's standards
• The art is amazing. Very Tim Burton-ish. Dull colors to set the mood but bright when it calls for it. Very gothic.
• The enemies are uniquely spooky. Some borderline what you would see in nightmares.
• The story is solid and also delves at times into mental health.
• The weapons fit perfectly into the lore of Alice in Wonderland and make sense.
• The combat is fluid and responsive for the most part.
• The platforming and puzzles are a treat if you're a fan of either genre.
CONS
• The targeting/lock on feature is bad. It works for what is the bare minimum. It will get you killed in certain fights and changing targets sometimes doesn't even work. I figured this out fairly quickly.
• The enemies are all well made and I love the design, but you will see the same sets from start to finish. Not a lot of variety.
• The game will likely crash. I ran into roughly 4-6 crashes in the entirety of the game. Not a big deal for me given the game's age.
• Ran into a bug where the game would disconnect my controller even if it was plugged in directly. I don't know if this is common. 10 hours in I discovered a work around. If you connect your controller (I use Xbox Core) before starting the game then it will lose connection every hour for roughly 1-5 mins until the game decides that you can use it again. However, if you have the controller off, launch the game and then turn it on, it seems to fix the issue. It's probably the oddest and most specific bug I have ever encountered in a game.
CONCLUSION
Overall the game is amazing. I'm disappointed in EA for not following through with this game's finale in the trilogy with Alice: Asylum. Really big missed opportunity and it's sad to see. If you don't own this game, the $10 price tag is more than fair or on sale like I got it for $1.50 is a STEAL. You'll get roughly around 14-16 hours out of this game, making it not a $1 per hr. game at the very least.
4.5/5
The graphics in the game are absolutely gorgeous, it is a beautifully imagined fantasy world. I had a couple of glitches but mostly it runs great at 2660 and 60 fps on an RTX 4060. if you are a fan of Alice in any form, this game at recent sale prices is a steal. Buy it!
One of the best games I ever played. History is great, gameplay is amazing!
i love this game, the graphics and story are both nice. my only issue is that there is a lot more parkour that i had anticipated, that's mainly because i'm bad at parkour. besides that i have no issues. if your thinking of buying this game, do it.
I got this on sale for 2 bucks and after playing a few other games that supposedly looked really good I was let down many times. Was not expecting this to live up to what it looked like but I am blown awayyyy I've forgotten how good hack n slash games can be especially one with such good story, art and voice acting. Alice's character takes no bullsh*t and we love that.
amazing storytelling and fighting mechanics :3 definitely one of my favorite games, if not franchises, of all time
Great game. The graphics are really very good, and the story line is awesome.
Iconic game for the setting and theme, however, it didn't age well. Out of the box the cutscene FPS sometimes tanks to 1 and is extremely choppy. Broken shadows. The enemies also feel very lacking in variety and uninspired. Oh and you have to manually unlock FPS in an .ini file. The game is long overdue a new instalment. Sad they chose not to pursue it.
Dark fantasy, total madness. Enjoyed that game 10/10. Chapeu bas. I hope they'll make continuation or give access to the prequel.
this is the only steam review i will likely ever write because this is the most important video game i have ever played in my entire life. please play alice: madness returns.
on top of the wonderfully whimsical, gothic graphics, the soundtrack is top tier. jason tai put his whole badussy into composing vale of tears and card castles in the sky. if you have ever played the prequel (american mcgee's alice), chris vrenna also composed some of the tracks! every single song is a wonderful representation of the part of the story it was made for that i can't imagine any other sound for them.
the story is an incredibly unique telling of lewis carroll's alice in wonderland. american mcgee's version of alice liddell is a severely traumatized girl in her late teens desperately trying to figure out what truly happened to cause the fire that left her the sole survivor of her family. you are consistently switching between the version of her in the real world, where she is living in an orphanage and "cared" for by a psychotherapist (who in actuality, is trying to erase her memories to turn her into a brainless prostitute for his own gain), and the version of her in her head, where she is trying to figure out the source of all of the destruction across wonderland. each chapter of the story gives her wonderland self a completely new dress with its own unique buffs as well, which i think is insanely cool and something i've never seen before in a game like this!
the topic of mental health is touched on with a lot of respect and is very well written, which isn't something you see often, and especially not in games from the time a:mr came out. alice isn't shoved into the "uwu pure cinnamon roll" box that most characters who are trauma survivors tend to be. on top of clearly being a good example of post-traumatic stress disorder, alice is easily viewed as schizophrenic as well, and is one of the only characters i've seen with my disorder that doesn't fall under the stereotype of being a heartless murderer. she's unapologetically a badass lady who just wants to understand herself, past and present, no matter the cost.
the game does have a handful of bugs that are super easy to fix thanks to quick forum and google searches, and throughout my gameplay i haven't experienced any besides crashing at the title screen.
electronic arts has done the gaming world a massive disservice by shooting down the creation of alice: asylum, which would've been the third and final installment in the series. american mcgee has since quit game development entirely, but is working on other personal projects that are still worth checking out. as many other reviews have stated: fuck EA. all my homies hate EA.
Nice game. It has some technical issues but you can solve most of them with a few mods
Amazing game, love the visuals and interesting story, direction, the horror-twist, I finished it 3 times before this is the 4th on Steam soon. Of course this is still an old game and some level design or mechanics feel off, it's quite linear but you can still get lost to the maps.
But warning, on PC it has serious issues, you have to fix a lot of things to make it work, check on nexusmods, fps fix, umbrella fix, widescreen, higher textures, better mouse movement, some other mechanics to work and on and on.
EA is responsible for not allowing the creators to fix the game, and also responsible for cancelling the sequel that was in the early development for years. Yet they still put this on sale. Ok..
I honestly cannot recommend it because of EA, I only give it a good review because of the game itself, and I wish Alice: Asylum, the sequel, returns but that's unlikely. Unless EA ends up making a sequel themselves that will be absolute garbage without anything the creators put work for. Other than that I doubt we will see a sequel, because EA only cares about money, and to them, a sequel wouldn't do anything. The reason we can't see good games anymore, because of these greedy corpos. Continue to throw more battlefield, need for speed, those other garbage sports games with million microtransactions, nothing else, seems like that's all EA is known for today.
an old game but the visual style holds up as it is so well done, standard platformer type game but well worth playing just to look at the world that was created as you explore it.
Play it. I don't need to say more. But I will.
It's the most Gothic, atmospheric, extravagant, whimsical, ghastly, peculiar, wondrous, tenebrous, eldritch, eerie, labyrinthine, lurid, uncanny, surreal, haunting, enigmatic, psychological, macabre, and maddening game ever made.
It seems like a lot of people are having graphical, input, or gameplay bugs and glitches. Causing the game to even crash on start up.
But I had no issues when I played. I just plugged in a PS5 controller and didn't encounter and crashes or bugs.
The game is fun and challenging with a really good game time, there is always something new to do and its really hard to get bored unless you get stuck on a boss fight. I adore the graphics and designs even with it being an older game. I do have an issue with how laggy the game can be and how it freezes my computer while trying to load the game but that could be an issue on my end.
