Описание

With the help of the many treasures on a mysterious island, Dorothy might just be able to save her son and dispel a terrible curse.

THM2 is a retro metroidvania. Acquiring new equipment and upgrades opens up more explorable areas in all sorts of places. This adventure platformer takes you from the depth of a sunken underground city to the ruins in the sky all the way beyond the realms of reality.

The game has multiple endings and additional challenges if you're really good at treasure hunting. A normal playthrough will take about 4-5 hours, and with the optional content about 7 to 8 hours.

This version comes with Steam achievements and other minor updates.

A few notes:

  • If you want to go fullscreen without a visible window border, hit ALT+ENTER. That works in a lot of games! Do the same again for going back to windowed mode.
  • The standard key setup is as follows: A/S/D + Arrow Keys - You can change these using the in-game key configurator if they're not to your liking. Gamepads will work if they're plugged in before the game is started.
  • The inventory is opened while the third action button (D on the keyboard) is held down.

Treasure Hunter Man 2 is what I would call a tough as nails sequel that doesn't disappoint in the quality department. It's better in almost every regard. The graphics are big and might take some getting used to, especially if you're like me and are fresh off the heels from Treasure Hunter Man 1, but you get used to it because the entire game was designed quite well around the screen crunch to the point of not being frustrating. No wonder people have said this game gives them Game Boy Advance vibes.

The updated version runs at double the speed from the base one, which is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because the original feels outright sluggish to play because of how laggy the game is, which means that a better and smoother performance is is objectively better for a 2D platformer that requires as much precision as this one. It's also a curse because it's quite clear that enemies and bosses in the original were designed with the slower performance in mind, so it's not uncommon to be blindsided by some of the bosses and projectiles. Maybe that's why an Easy Mode was added, to mitigate that fact, which also makes the early game far more palatable.

The updated version has a soundtrack that's improved tenfold over the original, with music that's on par with Sean Cameron's works in terms of composition and overall quality. It was so good, that the Steam version of Treasure Hunter Man 1 borrowed 9 tracks from this game, which is where I first hear them from. It feels surreal to listen to the same tracks but in mostly completely different contexts and sometimes in the opposite placements of where they were in the first game. The base version's soundtrack isn't half bad either, in fact, I think some of the compositions are quite good, they just lack the amazing instrumentation the updated soundtrack has which gives them lesser impact!

The difficulty this time around is outright mental. The first game lost steam as it went along, leading to undercooked puzzles and not much reason to explore due to the uselessness of money past the first area. Not the case in here, where not only is money vital, the early game can inadvertently become exceptionately frustrating if you make the wrong purchase due to limited funds available (protip: ALWAYS prioritize the Teleport Orb if you don't want to hate yourself every time you have to inevitably backtrack). The puzzles are amazing, and the platforming challenges the game makes you do sometimes is pretty clever, if diabolical at times. Sliding on your shield down slopes, bouncing on enemies in midair, having to comb every area for things hidden inside the ground or in the walls, sometimes even the ceiling. Not gonna lie though, trying to 100% areas can be a bit tedious at times when they're large and you're missing one chest or even a single coin. Shoutouts to the seemingly innocuous sparkles that need to be slashed twice to reveal a chest, something I quite literally only learned was a mechanic in the Countless Bones area, BY ACCIDENT, while doing the first enemy room fight. Turns out there was a chest right in the first screen of the cave area that was hidden in the exact same way. I miss having the Seer's Eye from the first game, wish it made a return as a sort of item radar for these things, at least for when you beat the game once, would make it far less frustrating having to do trial and error with hidden blocks and such. The eye icons scattered in places usually with hidden treasure present certainly made me think I'd eventually get it, only to be disappointed that it wasn't in this game.

Now, for the big Amboss Dude in the room. The Alt version with the updated music breaks a couple of things. For one, achievements outright don't work in it. Secondly, the postgame is inaccessible due to what I assume is either an oversight in counting the percentage completion of the game, or BECAUSE of the broken achievements. I can recommend the game, SO LONG as you're not trying to go for 100%, because for the time being, it's seemingly a waste of time. At least for the version on Steam, I have no idea if this applies to the Switch version, which released almost 10 months earlier, so maybe it's a botched porting job.

Solid indie metroidvania. Much harder than it initially appears but it still feels fair. Already played for an hour and feel good about the price to entertainment value. I might be biased because of love this style of game.

Beat the game in about 3 hours - probably a couple more hours if you're a completionist ( 6 ish). A really good mini metroidvania. I appreciated the unique colour palette and full remapping of the keybinds which is rare for small indie games. Well worth the price.

Several hours of decent metroidvania fun, well worth the few bucks! A fairly calming game with simple controls.

Far exceeds expectations. Kinda nice metroidvania with the major downside being that it doesn't have a map and so remebering stuff like a small yellow switch on a wall somewhere gets annoying after a while.

Apart from the janky controls, bad collision detection and broken mechanics this is a good game, if you like rage quitting through frustration this is a game for you.

A must buy. So simple yet guarantees hours of enjoyment out of it. Wish it was a bit longer or encourage exploration more for progress. To all curious fellows out there, game packs extra challenges beside the end boss so you can backtrack and still get a bang out of it when you're near the end. Still I crave more of it though. I'm hopeful for THM 3.

The Metroidvania Review

How Metroidvania is it?
High Fit – While there is no Map, the clunkiness of the controls and the emphasis on breaking blocks actually reminds me of the original Metroid – for better or worse.

Full Review

For only $2, Treasure Hunter Man 2 (which I will be referring to as THM2 for the rest of this review) actually offers a pretty meaty package. Generally speaking that’s the price point where you would expect a “Mini-Metroidania”, but you’re likely to get at least 3 hours out of THM2, and if you’re going for 100% it’s more likely than not going to take you more than 10. And, for your money, you get a pretty decent game out of it too. The thing that THM2 struggles with is actually standing out in today’s oversaturated market. I’m not going to say that it does nothing unique, but at least in my personal opinion it doesn’t really do anything exciting either.

The premise of THM2 is that your son, the titular Treasure Hunter Man from the first freeware game, has gone missing. You begin your journey with nothing but a compass that points you to your son’s tracking device, but eventually get a hodgepodge of tools to help you on your way. The story is pretty throw-away, it’s a typical mystery hook to get you motivated, and for what it is it’s effective. The game’s real charm comes from the creativity of its locales. You’ll be climbing towers to castles in the sky, diving into the bottom of the ocean, and even crossing over into other dimensions in your journey to find your boy.

The primary gameplay is a mix of puzzle platforming and a lot of forced combat rooms. The combat is, unfortunately, a little clunky. The sword is especially short ranged for its speed and presents a liability any time you attempt to use it. You quickly get a shield however, which ends up being your most effective weapon from the moment you have it. When you jump you can push down to land on your shield, which causes the same amount of damage as your sword and prevents HP loss from when you land on just about anything, including spikes. In fact, your shield is more than just a weapon and defense tool, since you can shield surf down slopes to get a boost in jumping height – which is actually kind of fun. As you Mario jump on everything, your sword’s primary purpose becomes breaking the stone blocks that litter the game.

These stone blocks are very important though, because they could contain a little green coin that is very necessary for your continued success. Unlike many games that hide things in blocks, there are a limited number of these coins in the world, and if you want to hit 100% completion, you’ll need to find all of them. In my opinion this is where the game falls a little bit from grace, since there’s no other indicator that you’re going to get these coins until you hit the block (unless there’s an item that I missed on my play through.) If you happen to miss any coins, you’ve little choice to scour the world again and again breaking every block hoping that ONE of them has the treasure you’re looking for.

Looking at the game from a non-completionist standpoint though, THM2 is as I’ve said – pretty good… but not great. I found myself getting a little bored near the end when they throw a few enemy gauntlets at you in a row. The final boss (that I faced) was actually hard enough that I had to go and explore some more to power up, but once I broke that power-to-skill barrier, the ending is kind of disappointing overall if you don’t find at least enough secrets to change it.

If you like the idea of rooting around for coins, then I heartily recommend Treasure Hunter Man 2. It’s a decent and competent enough game though even if you don’t enjoy that kind of search. At least, for only $2, you’re not going to be bleeding if you try it and don’t end up loving it.

This wonderful gem has afforded me twofold, the joy of playing through this exceptional example of a product of a dev. who truly loves what he does and it shows, and to finally be able to check off my wish-list that an OrigamiHero game has come to Steam and while it might be his first on steam It instills confidence that It won't be the last. So yeah! buy it!

Really enjoying it so far. Its a little obtuse, in that it doesn't explain very much at the start, but the level design is actually quite masterful in how it introduces you to each new enemy and concept without saying a word.
Its not mind-blowing, just rock solid stuff, and for less than the price of a really cheap bacon sandwich (mmmm bacon) I have no complaints.

Well, I'm currently stuck but I think it is definitely something that I am doing! LOL To be fair, I'm still very early in the game. There are A LOT of indie / action / platformers on Steam all calling out for your money but I would give this one an EASY reccomendation. Controls are tight ( and they have to be in this genre ) game difficulty is fair, and the graphics are purty. Would have paid more tbqh.

Treasure Hunter Man 2 is a casual metroidvania with plenty of content and decent platforming elements. You can also obtain this game for free from the developer's website, as far as I know the only difference is achievements. This developer has been making free games for awhile now, so I have no problems giving him $2 for a game that should be $10. You can explore a semi-open world by finding power-ups that will improve your mobility tools. I really like the variety of different mechanics, for example you can use shield to block, break the ground, and perform a slide jump. As with any good metroidvania, there are many secrets and lots of backtracking (not to mention many annoying birds). For the most part, the UI and gameplay are very intuitive, but it could use a map. There are some basic RPG elements like passive stat upgrades, it makes the treasure more relevant which is nice. It is not the best looking platformer I ever played, but I can't really complain, it has all kinds of different environments and the aesthetic is nice.

Pros:

+ responsive gameplay
+ fair difficulty
+ good variety of mechanics and power-ups
+ lots of secrets and relevant currency
+ good visual variety, plenty of content

Cons:

- I really wish you could look down
- some controller issues (should be fixed soon)

Overall Thoughts 8/10

If you want a more casual metroidvania, this one is pretty solid all around. It has good exploration aspect, decent platforming elements, several upgrades and overall enjoyable gameplay. Developer also offers his games for free, so you can always try the free version and then buy this one if you want to support him.
