I, Cyborg is a 300,000-word interactive science-fiction novel by Tracy Canfield. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
Being a cyborg copy of the famous outlaw Ypsilanti Rowe comes with plenty of advantages. But when your cybernetic brain begins to fail only a rare and obsolete part can make your systems function again. Journey across the galaxy as you hunt down the missing piece. Along the way you'll shoot down enemy ships, or jam their sensors so they never know you're there; seduce Ypsilanti's old flames—or just stay out of their gunsights; dogfight beneath high-gravity stormclouds and race pirates through a mined-out asteroid's rocky tunnels.
When Ypsilanti turns up in the original flesh, will the two of you make the perfect team? Or is there only room in this galaxy for one of you?
- Play as male or female; gay, straight, bisexual, or asexual.
- Boost your skills with cybernetic upgrades: you're a cyborg!
- Ambush a weapons shipment above a gas giant's rings.
- Smuggle alien pets, penetrate the walls of a comet prison, and befriend an intelligent starship.
- Work for the local crime lords, set them at each others' throats, or rat them out to the Intersolar Police.
- Infiltrate the halls of power and steal top-secret data with a touch of your augmented fingertips.
- Choose to favor your human instincts, your custom software, or a balance between the two.

I’ve enjoyed reading through this game multiple times over the years, and while it’s true that the choices only impact the story modestly at best and can be quite unforgiving stat-wise. It’s enough to keep the game interesting, and there are many colorful characters to get to know. The romances, however, came across as a bit rushed, and I never felt as close to any of them as I would’ve liked, but other than that, it was pretty good. (7/10)
First of all, and this is vital, you do not play a cyborg.
Unless we're going with the very incorrect Terminator definition of cyborg.
But hey, you're still biomechanical-ish.
And this game is yet another CYOA that is too harsh/opaque with stats.
For those of you unaware, books by Choice of Games sometimes have a horrible problem with punishing you horribly for having the wrong stats and or not correctly guessing which stat you should use.
This results in an incredibly frustrating experience of feeling like you're doomed to failure because you didn't play the game the *correct* way.
Ah, but what about the actual story?
It's okay.
Again, if you saw "Cyborg" in the title and assumed things you're going to have a bad time. Aside from not being an actual cyborg, there sure isn't much cyberpunk in a story about a "cyborg". This is barely any cyberpunk and a lot more space opera as you play a Han Solo type except not nearly as cool or capable. The plot is also going to drag you around by the nose.
If you wanted good romances as you probably were looking for in a CoG book? Find another game.
There is some genuinely amusing/humorous writing to be found here. But not nearly enough to recommend.
Skip this game unless you're completely desperate for a sci-fi CYOA in the sea of fantasy.
It's pretty bland. Never cared for a single character. Weak plot. All choices obviously depend on stats every time, which takes away a lot of immersion, as there's like 4 or 5 skills in total.
Choice of robots is much better game, this felt like a drag to finish. Also is annoying how it keeps saying cyborg when it means a android or a replica. The story isnt very good either. As you can see I didnt like it, I like this type of games but the story in this one is poopoo.
Whats the point of being able to evolve skills if you always have to pick the one you chose from the beggining? because if you dont you are done.
Get another game.
Was it worth over 200 hours?
No.
Is it worth the price?
If you like text games, yes.
Quality with these types of "games" can always be better and I hope that in the future that they will gradually become better.
Sorta like an investment for the future.
The concept of this game was interesting when I read about it. I'm not sure how I feel about the stat mechanics, but I really enjoyed the story, and that's what interests me the most.
Positives:
-Not too many characters and not an insignificant amount either. I especially liked Ypsilanti.
-Everything feels properly resolved at the end, and I was satisfied with it. Hopefully there might be a sequel.
-I like the moral and ethical dilemmas that come from copying a human and putting their personality, memories and face into a cyborg. But I also like that you can choose to not be burdened by that, if you want.
-It felt a little lengthier than the usual Choice of Games novels.
- By the end, I was a cyborg copy of a cyborg copy of Ypsilanti, co-piloting a ship with the real Ypsilanti. That's pretty cool.
Negatives:
-There is a big focus on stats. You're kind of forced to only pick the two that you started with, and I'm pretty sure they don't level up naturally. But there are also some choices that are hard to link to the correct stats.
-Nearly every character has a weird sounding name to me. I find it a little bit off putting when I can't pronounce most of the names in a story. This is more of a nitpick, though.
I was expecting a lot when I saw this game, and I was impressed with what I got. Another one I feel like I will play again. A solid 8/10.
Game is fantastic. Well written and a fleshed out world. Probably my second favorite choice of games/hosted games title behind Tin Star. I will certainly be looking forward to the next game by Tracy Canfield if there is one. Thx
Fun story.
Good length for a choice of games.
Quite a few paths for replay value.
Nice imagined world.
Putting aside the fact that I'm fairly sure this qualifies as an android or gynoid rather than a cyborg, this game hooked me instantly with its deep dive into one of the core philosophical quandries of humanoid artificial intelligences, by putting you in the role of a "fake", a "copy" of someone else who, to make matters worse, is actually still alive and kicking. It takes this premise rather seriously, and keeps its sci-fi rather hard even while not taking anything else too seriously.
Outside of the existential crisis where you have choices regarding whether you consider yourself (wo)man or machine, this is also a game of space pirates quintuple-crossing one another while smuggling space pugs, so even if you aren't inherently fascinated by the high concept, there's something to enjoy in the interpersonal drama. That said, most of these Choice of Games are fairly good about that, so I'd say that you should decide based mainly on how much the high concept resonates with you.
Kudos to Tracey Canfield for putting together some of the most exciting coherent, well thought-out, story and character rich, cohesive choice games I've played yet... and i've played a lot of these. I love the choices we can make and how it affects who we are and how we evolve as a character is simply a marvel... the stats and personal character development don't feel tact on like many other games like this feel. One of the best Choice games to date.
This one really took me back to the times of Choice of Robots - that level of quality. Awesome humor and extremely many meaningful choices, decent length and a very satisfying ending that felt wrapped up all around (at least in my case). I will definitely be re-reading this one and I recommend this book to anyone eager to try Choice of Games for the first time or is a long time reader.
This was a great story. I felt that it was easy to get to know the characters, and it felt that every choice really mattered. The only complaint that I have is that I didn't get to find out the conclusion from the choices I made at the end. So if this story doesn't have a sequel, I'm forced to give it a 9/10. If a sequel is released, I'll likely be changing that for the better though.
I, Cyborg took me around 4 hours to play from start to finish. It is one of those games where you need to consider your actions, since there's always a chance that what you'll try to do, will fail. I liked the game, I've replayed it already, and I'm sure I could replay it many more times. The game has a lot of variety, it will be different depending on who you ally yourself with, what ship you buy, what upgrades etc.. The story unfolds around your choices and it may even lead to your death in the end. It is worth the full price.
Nope, this game is simply to stat heavy.
Instead that your character grows while playing the game,
All mainskills are chosen at the beginning.
And an extremely big amount of choices are just statchecks.
As an example it works pretty much like this:
At the beginning of the game you can put 4 Points in the skills
A, B, C, D & E. So you are either a master of one or none.
And a lot of choices look like this:
"Do you want to use skill A, B, C, D or E ?"
And the skills that you don't put points in can't be used
at all because you pretty much always fail miserably with
them even though your character is always "confident" with
them.
So with every choice that you make you need to hope that
your stats in the background are high enough to even make
that course of action even possible.
Which overall kills immersion so much, that I didn't really
enjoy the story , because you can derail so easily from the
path you would take, simply because of one single
failed statcheck. (there is no rewind, or checkpoints btw)
And after the finale was also a statcheck which abruptly
ended the game, I simply got to the point where I would
loved to refund the game and erase it from my memory
because it taints all the great experiences I had with other
Choice of Games.
P.S. This isn't the only fault this game has but to describe
the others I would have to get more into detail and I simply
don't want to waste anymore time on this game.
Edit:
Okay after finding a way to cheat the shit out of this game
and put all my stats to the max, I came to the conclusion
that this game is pretty okay, not good but okay.
It still has other problems but if you take the whole
stat-system out of the equation it gets a whole lot more
readable.
A good fun game and i enjoyed reading it. Good story, interesting characters a lot of them where anoying but some always are. Had a lot of fun reading through this game.
Wow! I haven't had an experience like this since Choose Your Own Adventure books in the 80's, and this is cooler because no page-flipping. The author has a great style and a command of the language, which makes for easy reading and an exciting story. Fantastic job, can't wait to try several different story arcs.
I just adore this game: engaging plot, interesting characters, AI protoganist player can relate to. This game binded to stats strongly and this is cool, makes RPG expirience even better. Just one of the best CoG games I ever played. Also finally something not just robot-but-human-philosopical-"problem", but a real cool adventure in Sci-fi setting.
Should I also mention AI ship you can something like romance?
A fun little game; easy to play, hard to get the best ending. In essence, one is a cyborg with failing systems, dealing with the mess left behind by one's creator. One has some ability to customize the descriptions of one's appearance, though it does not oft come up, and unfortunately there is no nonbinary gender option. The romances are decent enough. One is generally encouraged to have at least some ability in several skills rather than hyper-focusing on one, though it is not always clear how good at a thing one needs to be to succeed. The characters, environment, and ships are interesting, and as a whole, the game is entertaining.
I'm gonna keep this short, cause I tend to create unfocused reviews if I go on for too long.
The games a really good RPG with strong character focuses. You really feel like you're playing as the character you've created. It's got good writing and may very well be the best thing these devs have made. If you are at all interested, buy it.
Edit: After replaying it, I'd say it's good enough to actually want a sequel.
This was a great game. And well worth the price. And I have only done one playthrough so far. Became a well-connected Fence. Now to become the Cop or maybe the true Pirate.
