THE MISSION
You're a mech with just one simple dream: to become the ULTIMATE ROBOT BOXING STAR.Getting to the top requires you to have two very important things—a left fist and a right fist. Forget either one of those, and you're not boxing with anybody.
THE GAMEPLAY
Once you've got your hands ready, there's only one thing to do. PUNCH. Punch everything, everywhere, and never stop. Use small jabs to whittle down health and huge, sweeping punches to send enemies flying and colliding with each other, starting deadly chain reactions akin to a wild game of pinball. It all sounds easy, right? Just punch and everyone dies. No problem.
Wrong.
Just because you're a boxer doesn't mean everyone else is. Enemies will shoot missiles and bullets from afar, killing you before you ever get a chance to give them a one-two between the eyes. So what do you do in the face of all these dangerous projectiles?
PUNCH.
Your titanium fists will send bullets right back at enemies. They'll send enemies crashing into buildings. They'll send enemies crashing into enemies. They'll send the Moon crashing into the Sun. You'll punch colossal bosses that are even bigger than the Sun. Dodge their skull-crushing blows, sweep around behind them, and give them a solid wallop upside the head. Never stop punching and you'll never stop winning.

seizure-inducing button mash, i have no idea whats happening
KO Mech starts out promising enough, with its bouncy, energetic presentation and soundtrack that provides a perfect match to the simplistic but satisfying core gameplay loop, all about flying around colorful mazes, punching the everloving crap out of hordes of other, less brawl-happy mechs, dashing into random debris to send it flying at mach-speed, bouncing off walls and pulverizing foes into cartoony dust clouds in a way that is as ridiculous as it is massively entertaining, before a room-sized boss delivers some surprisingly well-written comedic dialogue and gets punted into the stratosphere.
But it doesn't take long for the deliberate simplicity to really start biting the game in its shiny metal behind, as the levels start to become increasingly maze-like, filled with the same types of glorified punching bags you've been slamming about since the beginning and there is a high-pitched hissing sound as KO Mech starts to run out of steam and you start to feel like you've been playing for hours and so you take a gander at Steam's playtime counter and it says that you've only been playing for around 90 minutes and then the level select screen flashes before your weary eyes, with a good half of the game's increasingly samey mecha-maze-otrons still teeming with electronic evildoers and if you're anything like me you'll probably decide to pack it in.
Games greedily emptying out their modestly-sized idea buckets before the half-time break, only to later drag their feet across the finish line are dime a dozen, but when the total run time even with all the padding still falls short of the three hour mark, well then the thumb really starts to tilt down south. KO Mech is a bizarre case in a lot of ways, often feeling like more like a proof-of-concept, but polished to a shine and padded until the cracks start to show beneath its titanium hull. More variety in the levels or enemies could've helped, some added depth to the gameplay could've helped, or alternatively, how about just cutting away all the chaff and streamlining the whole thing into a sub-one hour romp, one that can actually sustain its initial energy throughout its whole runtime. With how cheap the game is, I doubt many people would have complained. As it stands, it's a charming, but ultimately underwhelming game that someone obviously poured a good bit of heart and effort into. A chromium-plated disappointment with a heart of gold.
This is my favorite game in the world forever and I love you guys.
If you're a fan of G Gundam and are a 80's or 90's kid who enjoys mecha action then I recommend this game. The option of using points to upgrade the abilities of your mech would give this game replay value if it were to be added. If the developers goal was to capture the feel of a Super Nintendo game they nailed it. From the graphics to the simple controls and challenging game play. Thank you for creating this game.
I don't know what to do in level 4. you can't kill the blobs without taking massive damage yourself.
I can't recommend this game enough. It's incredibly satisfying to beat the snot out of everything in sight, and in as flashy a manner as possible. The game has a real charm about it, the plot reminds me a lot of Need For Speed: Most Wanted in that it's very straightforward. You're gonna become the best robot mech boxer, and that's all you really need to go on story-wise.
My sole warning is that if you have a cheap mouse, it may not survive some of these levels, since you have to click rapid-fire to punch out all the enemies and their projectiles and it can get really intense in certain areas
tutorial guy calls himself a "strong daddy"
Feels like I walked into a Japanese arcade and someone left a credit in a machine. I have no idea what's going on but it's fun it's fast and looks really cool.
It's alright.
Eh
It's not a bad game. It's just not really worth the time tbqh. It's relatively short so you don't feel cheated but its also bare bones so you get what you pay for.
You move in all directions, and can shoot or just keep pressing attack to be invincible 90% of the time. The basic premise is that you traverse a level and open doors to get to the boss of the level. You move in all cardinal directions and evade and/or attack enemies whilst flipping switches. Very reminiscent of old 90's "collect the keycard to proceed" gameplay. It's nothing too complex, and beyond the fancy looking trailer and eye-candy there's really not a lot going on here.
Don't get suckered in by the fancy art package, there's nothing too deep or crazy here. It's not awful (just crazy barebones), but it's also just a waste of time more than anything. Hard pass.
10/10 A truly Bizarre Adventure.
TL;DR:
KO Mech is simple fun, in which you
+send enemies and buildings flying into each other dealing huge damage, KO Mech!
+are a tiny robot that fights impossible huge robots, KO Mech!
+can deflect bullets and missiles with your robot fists, KO Mech!
-punch switches across the whole level rendered barren by your onslaught just to open some dang doors, KO Mech!
KO Mech is the name. You are an aspiring robot boxer, aiming to take the champ head-on. You start off as a small timer, and small is the exact word that also concludes your look. Throughout your journey, you fight robot brethren that are infinitely different from you. Robot dreadnoughts, huge blazing robot (literal) stars, robot bamboos and robot... rooms. Despite your underwhelming size, your power output allows you to launch most enemies, buildings and trees straight across the vastness of makrokosmos, bashing into each other and you do get bonus scores in doing so with some satisfying sound effect.
KO Mech is an arcade game by nature, where a timer ticks and you are constantly trying to capitalize your maneuver and the level layout for a higher score. Or you aren't, because sending things flying into each other is a reward in and of itself.
KO Mech isn't a sophisticated game with sublime design, nor with an epic plot that makes huge sense, but it's a playful game, playful in a way that would remind you of that one day, decades ago, when you were still a teeny tiny kiddo, with childish hopes and dreams, bashing toy figures against one another in an imaginary battleground. That wasn't an especially memorable day, but now come to think of it, those were some carefree joyful days you are never going to live again. I spent one night clearing all levels and it was one good night of good old-fashioned mindless fun, although in too many stages you are asked to navigate through the whole level just to punch some random buttons to open some dang doors. Not cool.
And I do love its super cheesy cartoony dialogue. KO Mech is a good pastime, vibrating with vivid color and joy. And it's cheap.
Pretty awesome! It's like a non-hectic Bangai-O but you punch stuff. You have a lighting fast light punch, dashing heavy punch (which is the key attack in this game), and you can charge up shoot a medium sized blast. You also have a super move once you have enough meter. Heavy punch enemies and things stuck to the wall and it'll send things flying. If it collides with something, it'll most likely bounce. If there's a lot of enemies and collectibles on the screen, everything starts bouncing and exploding. Good action. Wish it was just a tad more hectic. A+ for muxing into originality! Totally worth the $4.99 US price tag.
High octane soundtrack.
Fast-paced gameplay that rewards attention and focus.
Unique, Nostalgic visuals.
Challenging boss fights and levels.
Trophies and unlocks for completionists.
Humor to tie everything together.
The experience is worth the price in my opinion.
I punched a tank mech into the air at mach 3 and ricochet their own missle back at them with my fists and made them explode
*cracks open zero ultra*
*takes a sip*
*turns on KO mech*
Ah, now that's what we call a video game.
UPDATE: I've beaten the game and want to say that my review hasn't been changed based on this fact. I do recommend using a controller instead of the mouse like I was initially playing with, though!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
To make a common comparison going around, have you ever played Bangai-O? Imagine that but with a lot more punches instead of missiles.
KO Mech is a charming game in which you control a mech boxer looking to punch in the circuitry of a bunch of other mechs. You do this by flying around the screen, mashing left click to deliver an endless stream of punches, and occasionally right clicking to use a hefty dash. The game is simple in nature in that you navigate many vibrant, colorful stages, clearing a path to the boss and searching around for trophies peppered around in various nooks and crannies. This is all accompanied by a fun, fast soundtrack.
That simplicity is both the game's strength and weakness. I admit I've yet to beat the game and I'll update this review if this changes, but so far all of the stages I've played have followed the same general structure without offering much to change things up. Everything is beaten by mashing left click and moving the cursor around the screen so as to be punching in the direction you want, sometimes pausing to use a dash attack or a shot.
Still, the game comes together to be fun and so for five bucks, I'd say it's a solid purchase.
This game is really fun. I love the japanese part of it and how some of it is pixalated, it gives me this good feeling everytime I play the game. The soundtrack though is amazing, it sounds really hyper and fun. But over all great game for only 5 bucks I totally recommend KO.
Simple controls, a unique design and a catchy soundtrack make this a steal at only $5.
You control a mech which punches to take out its enemies. You can mash one button to do quick closeup jabs, and tap another to perform powerful dashing straights. A projectile is also available for hard to approach enemies.
A lot of the terrain is also available to attack, and using your dashing straight on them and enemies with red health will send them flying, potentially hitting other enemies for extra damage! This enables you to easily waveclear lots of enemies.
Each stage you have to find the boss and knock them out in order to beat the level. However on earlier levels you must also find trophies (3 per level) to play all the levels. This can make it kind of tedious at the beginning to complete the levels, since you have to find them all in one play-through in order for it to count. I often ignored enemies and went scavenging for the early trophies I couldn't find and then proceeded to the boss.
If you can get over that hurdle though the game gets more interesting as more design concepts are implemented into the game. The dialogue between characters is cheesy but fun to watch, and I enjoyed the time I spent playing this game. The soundtrack is nice to listen to, and the overall feel is rather satisfying.
The game also has a survival mode, boss rush mode and alternate character if you collect 30 trophies. I wish the soundtrack was also available for download.
For only $5 ($4.25 right now given the special promotion) I don't know why anyone would not choose to play it. Its fun! Try it!
Great game for the price. The gameplay is simple but entertaining, the controls are tight, and aesthetic is excellent, and the soundtrack is fantastic. Definitely recommend picking this up and supporting the devs
