Game seems abandoned. No updates since years. I played about 1,5 hours. In this time you have seen everything. Sad, it had potential....
The game doesnt work.
It has nice visuals and a neat soundtrack with an 80s feel, but the core gameplay is broken.
Point of the game is to race fast, earn score by passing cars not hitting other vehicles. But the traffic AI doesnt work. It changes lane for no reason, crashes into each other for no reason goes off road for no reason. Because of this is very hard for you to predict how to drive properly.
Since one of the core elements of this very simple racing game doesnt work there is no way I can recommend it.
1/10
Looks so good. I love cruising around the grid
Relaxing aesthetic driving game with pew pews and power ups.
I enjoyed the game. I really, really did. But I have to give this a thumbs-down for one reason: This game is far too simple for it's asking price. When I say simple, I mean -SIMPLE-. There are games that I bought on Steam with this level of simplicity that cost a dollar or less. Look at Drift86. 2 bucks.
The game is in Early Access and maybe more depth to the gameplay is planned. Keep an eye on it. It's like zipping down a road in Far Cry: BloodDragon. Very pretty, very chill. I just wish there was more to it.
One final note is that using the Steam controller gives no analog steering controls. The game settings show a picture of an XBox controller so you would think it supports XInput controls. Maybe it does. Unfortunately, the Steam Controller does nothing in the game unless you configure it to use keyboard presses. Using analog emulation on the trackpad does help somewhat, but it's not as good as true analog steering.
I am very impressed by this game.
First off I wanted to comment on some of the negative reviews about difficulty by saying that this isn't your typical grind to get the most money and cars type of game..
It is more like a "see how far you can go on one quarter" type of game. The difficulty is there for a reason. It is a mechanic of the game. This is the type of game where there are patterns and you learn and conquer those patterns as you play the game more and more.
There are talks about repetitiveness and it is true, but what game isn't? There are plenty of powerups which alter gameplay and random map elements to make each run different than the last.
That being said this game screams nostalgia. The visuals, music, and fast paced arcade action make me feel like I am playing a classic racing game on an arcade cabinet in a dark crowded neon lit room at 12am.
This game is in early development so some things may change to make the difficulty different, but I like it how it stands. It is more a game of skill and relaxation than mindless grinding.
For its current price of under $10 (again early development so price will probably go up around the time you are reading this), it is a great purchase for the game in its current state.
Believe it or not, "synthwave racing game" is kind of a genre. There's a dozen of these things on Steam, and they all share three traits: amazing music, amazing visuals, very weak gameplay. Miami Cruise is no different. Playing more like a mobile game runner, where sessions are short and a single impact means starting over, there's just not much going on here. "Sometimes, you get a gun!" ...okay, but is it fun to shoot other cars? Not really. It's early access, so maybe things will improve, but the core gameplay loop of "drive until you hit something" isn't enough. I'd rather buy the soundtrack and jam to that all night long than play the actual game.
While I like the visuals and music there's not much to be said for the gameplay. As a simple arcade game where you score points for driving & gain multipliers for passing cars you'd have to wonder how they messed that up.
The NPC cars drive around haphazardly, not following the road or lanes at all. They can even spawn a few feet in front of you which will end your run almost guaranteed. I'm actually fine with the gameplay on its own, it's just that these two points make it annoying to actually play.
Also, this was supposed to come out of Early Access approx. 6 months ago. So there's that.
Finally, even for achievement hunters it's a frustrating game. The achievements require excessive grinding or are out of this world: scoring 1 000 000 or 5 000 000 points? Hell even the #1 leader board position only has ~2 000 000 points at this moment (so how did 0,7% of players get the 5m achievement? Nice one lads)
A simple and fun game with good visuals, awesome soundtrack. Arcade style game all about topping your high score. A few cases of poorly translated English are mildly annoying.
Anything Outrun or Vaporwave is good :)
If you like Car, Neon and retro new waves this game is for you !
The game is great but it could use some more content. More cars would be nice and I think the current cars that exist in the game should be sidegrades from the first car you start out with. I think more choice in general would make this game better than it already is. A weaker starting powerup of the beneficial powerups for when you start each round would be nice. I think the shield powerup should also provide immunity to the slowing terrain or have that to be a new powerup entirely. There's a few bugs but otherwise, I really like this game. Keep adding more content and it will have a bigger audience.
this game filled me with disappointment
The game is awesome but there's a few things that I can think of to make the game better:
* Implement a challenge mode
* The music is awesome include a few more tracks
* The shield is the worst powerup because it prevents you from increasing your combo since it knocks cars away from you, it should increase your combo everytime you hit a car
* More powerups/malus in general
* More cars and more colors
* I could not see what power up I had when I was in first person view
I love the game though its fun to play when you just wanna chill out y'know.
If you click out of the game on the crash screen, and then click back in, you won't be able to hit restart or menu, you have to exit out the game. But I love the game so far, I wish there were options to permanently enable certain bonuses and maluses, specifically pixelate.
Update: Also about half of my deaths come from stupid drivers or what I would consider unfair deaths. When a yellow car spawns right in front of me out of nowhere, not only is it hard to react that fast to it, but it's also almost impossible even if you do react just based on the "slipperyness" of the car (which I do love that mechanic). The other is a little more questionable, the cars dont follow the road, if they come to a turn they don't turn at all, so you have to be reminding yourself that when you are trying to make a sharper turn with AI around. Now I'm not sure whether the cars not following the road is intentional, or is just yet to be added, but if it is to be considered intentional, it doesn't make sense why even on some straightaways, very rarely a car will be veering in one direction, often causing death of the player.
Also because the game is so simplistic I think the amount of time that would be necessary to gain enough credits to buy the best car is way too long. So either credit gain should be upped or prices decreased. Unless more content is added to warrant that amount of playtime, in which case it's fine to keep prices the same.
Just my thoughts, really like the game, the music, the aesthetic and everything about it. Hoping the dev doesn't abandon it and maybe adds some more cool stuff such as more permanent powerups, or a way to drift without sacrificing your multiplier.
This game is pretty awesome. It feels simple but they put so much detail and effort into it. The aesthetics of the game are pretty cool as well. The little in game bonuses add a great touch to this game along with the music as well. Overall great game and would recommend especially for the price.
Update July 2020: Nothing changed about the game. May be abandoned. Still no multiplayer, still no AI or other improvements. And before some guys start yelling (DO YOU KNOW WHAT A BETA IS) again... You know what abandoned Early Access Games are? Games that promises stuff which they never deliver. Like a freaking multiplayer.
Original review from December 2018:
I really wanted to recommend this, but i cannot. I really like the visuals and the music (i am an 80s kid you know). But there is literally no content. You just drive endlessly on a road, target is to not crash. There is also no AI for the traffic, they just go straight. EVER. Which means they crash into you, into buildings, into walls and into mountains. When i drive i think naturally: "oh oncoming traffic, i bet he will stay in his lane". NOPE, not in this game.
Just driving is nice for a change but it gets old very quick, so i would like some real racing modes. Lets be curious what the multiplayer will hold.
Edit: You might think 1,2 hours is not enough playtime to write a review. But seriously, you have seen anything from the game in that amount of time.
Beautiful game and beautiful graphics.
Also very addictive by the way.
