Played this game on my dads PS2 when I was like 4 all the way to now 19 on a PC. Absolutely a timeless classic that was revolutionary for its day and now its trivial. I think workshop support will really bring some interesting concepts to this game (looking at you BeamNG nerds) and make it something that future generations can enjoy.
The game looks like it was released 20 years ago
Great game. Perfect for 2-3 evenings as it shouldn't take longer than 10 hours.
If you want to play on a controller, you might want to unbind left stick up in Steam Input 'cause it is bound to accelerate, and it sometimes messes with things.
Some tips from me - I do not recommend the following cars (though you might like them, idk): Slider (appropriately named), Blade (I don't like how it handles, it slides like crazy, and it has slow acceleration), and Bonecracker (essentially a tank). I also do not recommend buying the Supercharger upgrade because it makes the car too powerful (I know, it sounds stupid) and it becomes too hard to control, especially on very tight turns heavy tracks.
I played it almost 20 years ago on my old steering wheel and now I am playing it on t300 and game is still updated!
Really nice to see what came before Wreckfest. This game is compatible with a racing wheel BUT it tends to lose force feedback after restarting a race too many times (my only workaround is to just disable and re-enable my wheel through device manager). I have a Thrustmaster TMX. The game plays perfect at rotation angle 270ᵒ along with the in-game sensitivity at max and force feedback on the lowest settings (it's still pretty strong, imo). Another issue is that gold races will start getting more difficult when using a wheel so I had to resort to using a controller.
Either way, solid game!
Good game :D
BUT
If you're getting into it now for the first time, or you've played FlatOut 2 before this - beware! You might be surprised how unapologetically raw this game really is :)
Get inside your RWD junkyard beast and feel the american power as your wheels start to spin in the mud struggling to generate any traction.
Observe how your front-heavy rust-monster absorbs hits from left and right as your opponents dislplay concerning amount of aggressive behavior.
Whoops, you forgot to let off the gas before entering a corner? Or maybe you went too wide, touched the wall of tires, which threw you off balance?
What a shame, time to try again! ;p This game doesn't forgive big mistakes and the margin of error it leaves you is paper thin.
Yup, it's more challenging than the arcade-y over the top atmosphere suggests. In some races you just have to try few times and memorise the corners to finally win.
Destruction physics is still impressive, even today, almost 20 years after the game's release. But you can't really go balls to the walls, because everything around the track is surprisingly heavy and bumping into an inconspicuous wooden fence might totally destroy your momentum and make all your opponents pass you with ease.
I still had some fun, but after playing this and FlatOut 2 back to back, I think that sequel improved everything.
And I mean - Everything ;p
Which is not even a fault of this game, so Im still giving it a thumbs up :)
THIS IS FLATOUT!!!!!
just because i had to buy a new windows 11, i lost all my credits and have to start all over in some stupid setup that i didnt have last time..i think it sucks
very fun game!
very fun, can be difficult at times
I had a lot of fun replaying this game. FlatOut has aged well, thanks to its unique mix of destruction based racing and engaging physics. The core gameplay remains enjoyable even to this this day. Amazing game totally worth the money.
It's even better than crew 2.
me drive me kill
What is worse than not being able to play a nostalgic game? Well, finding out that the game sucks once you replay it
FlatOut is one of those games, and it's best left as a nostalgic memory.
I first played this game a long time ago when I was younger, and after seeing that it got updated to work on modern machines I got excited to try it out again. Oh boy was I in for a treat.
For starters this game is very barebones, which is understandable since it was a budget game when it came out, but looking at it with a modern view, the "career mode" in this game is just the same races over and over again. Something I wouldn't have a problem with, if the game was even remotely fun to play, which it isn't.
Speaking of which, what makes FlatOut so unfun to play is the cars handling system. All of them drive like a boat, you can't accelerate for more than 5 second without crashing your car. Again that wouldn't be a problem if we had some useful mechanic to compensate for it, like earning boost.
As a matter of fact you earn boost in this game by hitting your opponents and objects in the track, however all of these things either make you loose speed or make your character fly out of the car. Once one of these things happen, you will most likely have to restart the whole race, since when a oppenent overtakes you mid race, you simply have no chance of catching up to him again, even with all that boost you've earned.
I am sure there is some FlatOut pro out there who will say that I simply need to "get good" at the game, but for such a simple game I expected to be able to enjoy it casually, without having to worry too mcuh about its outdated mechanics and physics.
As a retro game enjoyer I can look past a lot of jank and outdated elements in a game, if my overall experience with it was fun. Unfortunately I can't say the same for this game.
The sentence that best sumarizes my time with FlatOut is: "Do you really want to restart the race?", which as you can imagine does not make for a very fun racing experience.
It's not all bad though, the soundtrack featured here is pretty good, plenty of rock and punk songs that help the experience be a little bit more bearable. Although it's a shame that the game doesn't have a shuffle option as tracks simply loop until you finish the race (or restart it).
If you are really inclined to try this game out, either for nostalgia or curiosity. I would recommend you to simply play some races and the bonus events, and not even bother to finish its career mode, since it is very repetitive and doesn't have much to offer.
game wont update and is unplayable
Good arcade racing game, quite challenging too. I recommend not treating this game like a flatout game if you come from 2 or UC, the game becomes a lot better when you start treating it like a regular arcade racer.
I would recommend playing this game on keyboard and mouse due to the fact that controllers just use a digital input anyway.
6.5/10
This and BeamNG.drive are best games :)
One of the best racing games
It's not like Flatout 2 in terms of speed, but it's a whole different experience
The challenge is in controlling the car, because the controls and AI are really tough
There's also some great music to go with it
But we're waiting for multiplayer to be added :)
I definitely recommend buy this
Good game, though developers need to integrate full native gamepad support into the game, particularly when it comes to the triggers.
Also, there's an issue where if you push up on the joystick when accelerating, the accelerator will stop and you will slow down. It's not a bug, it's a feature you can disable by removing "up" and "down" from the gamepad mapping in the Steam overlay.
best racing game
childhood favorite. still love it.
Best ever
wreckfest father
I hated Tania Graham so much back in 2006
GOATED
I will leave the cat here, so that everybody who passes by can pet it and give it a thumbs up and awards

Despite it's age it runs really well on modern systems and is just a fun demolition derby racer with fair progression, fun tracks, decent amount of vehicles and multiple handling options(normal and pro). I could easily recommend getting it full price but I'm sure on sale it is real cheap.
I think online multiplayer with a friend might be possible with hamachi or maybe there's a community mod. If your getting it for multiplayer I would recommend researching that first.
The authentic car crashing/racing derby game that feels like in prototype stages. Played hella a lot of Flatout and Burnout from youth days on PS2, gets old but still refined at its time for arcade games in 2000s. Btw, try hitting a cone... Trust me you'll easily get launch into the stratosphere and barrel rolls for days
