Gravity Circuit is one the fastest paced Mega Man style games I've seen to date, comparable to the X and Zero series, and even has movement tech from those two. nonetheless, the game's movement (minus sliding) is smooth as butter, and allows you to move like a robot monkey on crack who also has a grappling hook.
not to mention, the eight boss stages and 3 "Wily" stage equivalents , are all fair challenges to the player, testing our movement knowledge and skill with the tech given to us. not only are the stages fair, but the bosses attacks are all perfectly avoidable if you know how.
10/10 would recommend!
pure peak. amazing main game and 100% all very fun and i never lost interest while playing this game (except for the basketball achievement fuck you)
Been following this game since 2018 and was looking forward to it whenever it was ready and the wait was worth it. Awesome art and animations, good music, and of course a fun game. Grappling hook feels great after getting used to it for a stage; the combat action fits in nicely and movement feels smooth. Highly recommend if you're a starving Mega Man fan like me.
This is an excellent platformer. The art style is pure eye candy. The game handles really well. The story is great. I'm really excited to see what this team does next.
i'm not too familiar with mega man, but even i could tell that gravity circuit is a massive love letter to that franchise and everyone behind this game really knew what made those games work. i'm not gonna write a long essay on why i like this game, all i'm gonna say is that this game desperately needs more love, more people need to talk about how fucking good this game is.
This game really went and asked: What if the Chain Rod, Recoil Rod, and the Z-Knuckle from the Megaman Zero games were somehow even cooler?
A natural evolution of the Mega Man Zero games with a stylish aesthetic and smooth, fluid gameplay. There are enough customization options that you can tweak to find the perfect playstyle that suits you.
takes a bit to learn but the gameplay is actually awesome and the artstyle looks amazing
(also these characters need action figures they look so sick)
Fast and fluid movement like Celeste. Deep and refined combat mechanics like Hollow Knight. Was expecting megaman but its so much more.
You can finish it in 6-8 hours but it's meant to be played multiple times just to try different builds.
Well worth the asking price, practically a steal on sale
I have never played a Megaman game and this game made me interested in the franchise.
It is really good and enjoyable even to people who never played the games it is clearly inspired by. No insta-kill hazards, generous checkpoint system and various upgrades makes the challenges of the game very doable and not frustrating.
Pixel art and music are also excellent.
This game is very clearly an homage to Mega Man, but its so distinctly cool in its own way. I blasted through this game in a few days. Really big fan of the art style and the overall polish this game has!
But good lord, the final boss on hard mode is one of the most ridiculously punishing and brutal boss fights I have ever done. Definitely means I won't forget it at least
Плотный базированный платформер. Тотальный кайфец, рекомендую.
Despite appearances, Gravity Circuit is hardly a straightforward Mega Man clone. The game synthesizes the best of each MM subseries: Everything you know and love from Classic, X and Z is here. The tone of Mega Man is both dramatic and sweet, epic and hopeful; hard to get right, yet Domesticated Ant has touched upon it with ease. As the protagonist is melee-focused and uses a grappling hook, the emphasis is on influences from Zero. However, the game mixes that with a set of impactful wrestling and grappling moves, hybridizing as a beat-em-up. Domesticated Ant heeds all the important lessons of retro revival titles in the same vein, such as those of Shovel Knight. Makes the half-bummed attempts at reviving Mega Man seem decades behind in expertise and innovation.
I distinctly remember the hype for Mega Man 11. It was 2018. The X legacy collections were about to be released and gamers everywhere were dressing up as the Blue Bomber. Although Mega Man X was the only franchise entry I beat at the time, it was enough to pique my interest in 11. I thoroughly enjoyed the demo on Switch and couldn’t wait to get the full game.
Fast forward to June 2019 and I still don’t have it. The hype has died down and everyone seems to have forgotten it exists. I went to a local GameStop and saw a physical copy of Mega Man 11 and an indie game my college roommate recommended called Dead Cells. My parents offered to get me both games on the condition I can only play one of them immediately, and that I would get the second one on my birthday a month later. Would you believe me if I told you I picked Dead Cells as my first choice? Yeah, I can’t believe it either in hindsight. Long-term, however, I’m glad I made that choice, because it was infinitely more memorable.
Over the next five years, I became a veteran of Mega Man and 2D platformers in general, so I was hoping to see something original when I heard about Gravity Circuit. It ended up being an alright tribute to the Blue Bomber. Better than the subpar entries, but not inventive enough to touch the best ones.
First impressions are good. Movement is slick as oil, with your character Kai being capable of running, jumping, grappling across pits, and beating the crap out of robot foes with his mighty fists. The commitment to melee combat is a nice touch, but I wouldn’t say it’s as primally satisfying as Guacamelee or as varied as the Zero games. There are “booster chip” perks and “burst technique” special attacks you can equip, but many of them never struck me as worthwhile. The burst techniques are a nice idea, but the first one you get, a forward charge, is so handy I never swapped it out. I did add an uppercut and counter move to my repertoire, but more often than not I was using the charge. It’s fast, has good range, and deals damage on contact, a perfect foil for the speedy bosses.
The booster chips are for passive abilities and only three can be equipped at once. Some of these are acceptable, like the double jump, but the strategic potential is crippled by the fact you can swap them in and out of your loadout at will. Here are several I found useless:
1. Repair Enhancer - Reduces repair costs and improves health restorations. Too bad restoring yourself is already dirt-cheap.
2. Magnet Chassis - Automatically picks up drops from enemies and objects. Most pickups will fall onto solid ground and the hookshot can pick up floating burst energy, so why bother?
3. Light Alloy - Reduce fall speed by holding down the jump button. The default speed isn’t that fast though, and wall sliding is already a good way to avoid blind pitfalls.
4. Grip Enhancer - Enables clinging to walls without sliding down. Can manually descend. This one baffles me. By default, Kai sticks to walls when he touches them and he can manually descend if you push down.
5. Overflow Converter - Heals you whenever the burst energy meter is full. Filling up the meter takes time since you have to defeat enemies to acquire energy, but there’s another chip called Emergency Accumulator that makes it so if you have energy in reserve, you lose that instead of health when taking a hit. This means you can essentially gain more health just by killing a couple enemies. If you desperately want more energy for burst techniques, then switch to another perk because once again, there’s nothing stopping you from switching them in the middle of a level or boss battle! I wish you had to commit what perks and techniques you bring into a level. There’s no reason to restrict the number of perks and techniques you can equip if you can swap them at will.
How about the levels themselves? They’re competent, building on their defining gimmicks as you would expect. Overall though, most come across as rehashes of past Mega Man ideas. Do we need another ice level, highway level, junkyard level, and cyberspace level? The music and lava levels at least had memorable gimmicks, but for a game with 11 levels total, I’m severely underwhelmed.
I played through on Normal difficulty. My original plan was to finish it on Hard, but I scrapped the idea after seeing Kai die in like 3 hits. Trying to speedrun these levels, avoiding obstacles and pummeling enemies as you go, is where the fun is at. However, enemies are positioned in such a way you’re liable to die on Hard before reaching the next checkpoint unless you forgo speed and play cautiously. I still died on Normal periodically, but only after many consecutive mistakes instead of a few. That fits better for long levels with just a few checkpoints imo.
There is WAYYYYYYY too much dialogue for such a basic story. It can thankfully be mashed through, but it dampens the action nonetheless. Either get to the point or embrace a more complex narrative.
For all the bland Mega Man games out there, Gravity Circuit may be a step in the right direction. Undoubtedly enjoyable, but indie tributes need to do more than copy a single source. There’s thousands of video games to draw from and the best nostalgia tributes either pull from multiple sources or don’t sell themselves as tributes. Shovel Knight took some cues from Mega Man a decade ago, but never did it feel like a copycat. It borrowed from many other 8-bit classics including but not limited to, Mario 3, Zelda II, Castlevania, Ducktales, and Ninja Gaiden. It also wasn’t afraid to modernize unnecessary elements like limited lives, inconsistent checkpoints, and instakill spikes. Gravity Circuit does the bare minimum, ironing out obvious problems and refusing to go further.
I don’t think most artists realize that advertising your project as a spiritual successor to something else is setting yourself up for disappointment. Sure, the product can be very polished and gorgeous, just like this one, but chances are it lacks raw creativity and passion. As difficult as it is to admit something isn’t for me, I would rather experience that than go through the motions.
Because of its imitative nature, I would only pick up Gravity Circuit if you’re a Mega Man junkie. Even then, I would wait until it’s $10 or less. $17 is too much for an experience this derivative and short and they want $22 on home consoles. Yeah, stick to PC on this one.
It's Megaman if Megaman was a luchador armed with a grappling hook. Pretty much based on that description you should know whether or not you want to pick it up.
I'll give you a little more though. It can take some getting used to how the game's flow state works. The protagonist does take contact damage from enemy hitboxes UNLESS they're taking damage, so at first you'll probably take some hits on approach to an enemy before you figure out the optimum. Once you get that timing down, though, you'll start flying through the levels.
There are a few other differences. You don't gain enemy attacks, but instead new "Burst skills," up to four of which can be equipped at once mapped to a special button. Between being able to equip three upgrade chips plus these four burst skills, you can change quite a bit your approach to the game. I, for example, honed in on a "beatdown build" which relied on doing extra damage to enemies with basic attacks to regenerate health, but there are builds for using your grapple hook to dash to enemies (rather than pulling them to you), creating explosive decoy bombs ... there's a plentiful amount here. Oh, and then there's color palettes that also tweak your base moveset and even abilities, such as one that makes every jump a spinning kick attack.
Basically, it's Megaman with a Luchador. Kicking soundtrack, nice, crunchy 8-bit/Gameboy color style effect and palette while still being modern.
It's also more generous. No lives limit, and stage rankings (which later Megaman games became ABSURD with) are far more generous, allowing you to maximize benefit (cash for upgrade purchases) from speed and fluidity OR exploration and taking on as many foes as possible.
Give it a whirl!
It feels like a more fast paced and versatile mega man x inspired platformer. But while it is inspired by it, I think it is exceeds in in terms of player choice with the customization and abilities to unlock. Overall, a solid and fun game that is good for several short and enjoyable gaming sessions.
As someone who mostly missed out on the cultural moment that was Mega Man X, primarily watching my older brothers play the game on the SNES when I was young, it felt amazing to be able to play a game that so accurately captured the absolute badass feelings those games always seemed to have. The movement is incredibly fluid once you get the hang of it, and coupled with the breathtaking art and incredible music, flying through levels produces a raw joy that I've only felt a few times in gaming. This game is just pure fun, and I've added about half the soundtrack to my personal playlist after purchasing it individually. If you think you might like Gravity Circuit, I highly recommend buying and giving it a shot.
i love running in this game man, better than the dash mechanic in pizza tower ngl
One of my new favourite games of all time.
The controls take a bit to master but once it clicks, it becomes a game where every mistake is always your own fault and that's an amazing feeling. I've been playing over and over for a while now, and while I was late to get into it, it's easily climbed up my list of favourite games. I love the story, the cast of characters, the art style, music, just about everything. I don't have anything I can really complain about. It's that good. Peak. Absolute peak.
Played through the game three times, including a run without any upgrades, and had a blast every time. Barreling through each level faster and faster was extremely satisfying, especially when combined with all of the movement options/upgrades. Just about everything in the game clicked with me.
Except for the bat enemies. I hate those winged rats.
fantastic game, extremely nostalgic and holds its own super well, easily one of the best games ive played, movement feels really good, stages are super well made and the bosses are really nice, customization also feels really good 10/10
I just finished obtaining the last few achievements. I had an awesome experience with the game overall over the course of 4 playthroughs:
1: Hard Mode
2: New Game+ on Hard Mode with the Master Levels modifier
3: New Game+ on Hard Mode with Circuit Mode and the Rude Enemies modifier
4: Hard Mode with no health upgrades, no additional booster chips, and no additional burst techniques
Gameplay
The game more than delivers on the action promised by the trailer. It's fast-paced (refreshingly so), has tight controls, let's you equip up to four really cool power moves (known as "Burst Techniques", like the piledriver move and that Kamehameha-like blast from the trailer), and let's you equip up to three useful power-ups ("Booster Chips") that accommodate different play styles. The bosses are all really cool and fun to fight, and they're each unique. Fighting them felt like a fighting game (like Smash) because you both have crazy movement tech and abilities. Normally, in games with bosses like this (classic Mega Man, Shovel Knight, etc.), it feels like you're the little guy jumping around on the floor trying to attack an enemy who's clearly superior in strength and speed, but in Gravity Circuit, it feels like you really are having all-out battles on equal footing with your super-powered rivals, like you yourself are a boss fighting other bosses. I'm not sure what Normal Mode is like, but on Hard Mode, it was truly a blast.
Clearly inspired by Mega Man, Gravity Circuit has a "use the boss's ability after you beat them" system. However, it's not implemented exactly the same way. Half of the system deals more with the player's movement tech (it's similar to Shovel Knight, where different paint palettes give you different skills. In this game, each palette is related to a boss's abilities). The other half of the system deals with combat (each Burst Technique is based on a boss's abilities). It's fun to try out different moves and paints because they're each useful in their own way, but it's safe to go ahead and just choose your favorite loadout—the game does not force you to play any specific way. You could easily go the entire game without anything (though I would not recommend doing that on your first playthrough).
There's a grappling hook. That's all that needs to be said about that.
Atmosphere
I really like the overall vibe of the game. The dialogue is a good level of charming without being cheesy, and the music is great (for games like this, good music is kind of required, so that's no surprise). The colors are done really well—there was only exactly one moment in the entire game where I mistook a background detail for a platform, and it was only because I wasn't paying attention. It's easy on the eyes, and I never felt overwhelmed or overstimulated by what was on the screen. I attribute this to the fact that each stage has a simple color palette that makes it easy for the developers to help us intuitively distinguish between dangerous/safe/interactable/background objects.
Critiques
There are only a few things I would have liked to see from this game. Overall, while the difficulty of Hard Mode was mostly satisfying, it still isn't that challenging if you're already really good at platformers. The base game is far too forgiving—there are no gameovers, and when you die, you just start back from the most recent checkpoint (like Shovel Knight, but Shovel Knight is definitely more challenging in terms of platforming). Even on Hard Mode, it's relatively easy to fly through the stages once you settle into your playstyle. I think this game could have used a Very Hard Mode and maybe even an Expert Mode. I think this is partly satisfied by the fact that there are modifiers you unlock after you beat the game, which is fine, but I like it better when games either A) impose greater challenges just within the base game or B) give a real incentive to make the game harder for oneself. In my opinion, option B is the best—just add achievements for beating the game with higher difficulty settings and different modifiers.
I also wish the little intros before each boss fight were skippable. Ultimately, that's not a huge deal, but having to sit through Kai walking into the room and having the big "VERSUS" graphic show up did get a little annoying, especially on subsequent playthroughs.
While sliding down a wall, I wish you could punch into the wall. As it is now, you have to jump off the wall so that you can punch the wall. Minor gripe, but it was somewhat grating accidentally clinging to breakable surfaces and not being able to break them until I jumped off first.
Summary
Action-packed, fast-paced, awesome power moves, great music/art, grappling hook, and super fun.
If you love Mega Man but wanted to throw hands well Gravity Rush is E for everyone.
If you are a Megaman X fan, but also a masochist, this is the game for you! While this game certainly takes a lot from the X franchise it also muddles in its own style with a different weapon system and brutally challenging levels and bosses. Pick this game up if you want a hard fast challenge. I reccomend remapping the dash button to something similar to the X series.
it's as cool to play as it looks in the trailers. buy the upgrade that lets you launch yourself to enemies
Two-dimensional games like this are hilarious. I say don't bother buying this one. Buy Mega Man instead. That's stupidly difficult. If you want to insult your intelligence play the Japanese one. Is this one even Japanese?
i really loved gravity circuit, its sense of speed and momentum is unmatched without sacrificing strong combat, great aesthetics, or replayability and customizability. you can play this game in any way you want, and come back to it time and time again, mastering something new each time. lots of games focused on improvement struggle to hook me in their first playthrough, but i had no such issue with gravity circuit, and i can see myself coming back to it long after today. it's the best kind of spiritual successor, one which not only reintroduces ideas of the past but builds upon them and comes out the other end with its own, beautiful identity.
Awesome MegaMan Zero-like game
This game feels just like a modernized and more polished version of the GBA MegaMan Zero games. The gameplay is fast-paced and has a lot of depth, with many new abilities and upgrades to acquire.
The level design is also amazing, with each level having its own distinguishing mechanics to keep things interesting.
A must-play for MegaMan fans and platformer fans in general
its peak
you get to punch robots and get new ways to punch robots based on the robots you punch
you can even THROW robots (and other things) at other robots and they EXPLODE and its cool
really recommend you play it, especially if you're a fan of megaman x or zero
If you're old enough to remember trying to blow dust out of an NES cartridge so it'd work on a Saturday morning, Gravity Circuit is going to bring some more memories back in the best kind of way. Or if you're just a gamer who's into something simple, but kinda deep when you pay attention to the story: Gravity Circuit is one of those games that is geared towards a few specific kinds of players. As so many others have mentioned, this is a love letter to the Mega Man series as a whole, along with some of the sub-series in that franchise.
But it also manages to be different. If you struggle, go find booster chips or starting trying different burst techniques. This is one of those games where if you start struggling with a boss, don't give up - there's a way around this. Between the music, the fact that two of the 'bots you're supposed to rescue are very good 'bots (you'll get the pun later) and the surprisingly detailed story, here's hoping that Gravity Circuit becomes a series, not a one-and-done.
Domesticated Ant Games, y'all hit a home run with this one as far as I'm concerned.
This game is great. I enjoyed playing it. The sound track is amazing and the controls feel very responsive.
If I could nominate this game for Game of the Year 2024, I would.
9.8/10. Easily the best game I've played in a while.
Lot of fun, still need to put in more work for the boss rush, but getting there.
I've finished this game, and am still trying to 100% it. This is genuinely one of my favorite mega man-like fangames out there. After a single playthrough, I could tell you everything about every major character, and talk passionately about the story. This game just OOZES charm, and there was not a single character i disliked. The gameplay is outstanding as well, feeling simultaneously fast-paced while still forcing you to use your brain every now and then. I know it's unlikely, but I would LOVE a sequel game. 10/10
The Good
-it's a Mega Man Zero Homage
-Hookshot platforming is awesome
-Music is stellar and worth buying the OST
-Gameboy Color/Neo Geo Pocket Color aesthetic
-Multiple Skills
-Very good Customizable controls (with accessibility like auto combo, a toggle-able meter, and direction indicator that follows the player char)
The Bad
-Outfit colors from the last major update are tied to skills (nitpick at worst)
-Majority Melee focused combat may be a bit of a turn off
-Hookshot is just ok for combat (it's better for movement)
The Ugly
-May or may not stutter at times (at least for me it happens but its rare so it's the tiniest of nitpicks)
A great game wonderfully adapting the franchise it was inspired from. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes platformers.
An absolutely wonderful spiritual successor to the MegaMan series. There are plenty of homages to its inspiration, but still feels different enough to be its own thing. If you've been itching for more blue bomber, this title will definitely scratch the itch and then some!
Game Ranking: S+ Tier
Disclaimer: Review based on my experience, so there will be subjective parameters in this analysis.
Gameplay: God Tier
As is characteristic of its genre, it's a game that encourages fast and aggressive gameplay. Playing fast is not mandatory, but it is rewarded, with stages that are designed to be challenging enough to make you feel rewarded when you beat them, but not so difficult to be frustrating.
Combat is fluid, simple but with depth, with a wide range of moves that facilitate both combat and mobility.
Character customization should be highlighted. There is a wide variety of powers and active/passive abilities that allow the player to choose their play style. Not only is it possible to change these abilities at any time during the game, but you can also save 3 sets of powers to choose from. It's possible, for example, to play with a platforming build, a general-purpose build and a build for boss-fighting, with easy options to change between the builds you've made.
Art: S+ Tier
The game's artwork is beautiful, highly legible and full of personality. The characters and elements follow, individually, monochrome palettes, while the collection of elements on the screen form a harmonious whole with its own identity. The artists clearly had a vision and knew what they were doing.
The dialog system is probably the best I've seen in a 2d platformer, with the speakers' expressions and non-speakers reactions in the middle of their lines – a simple but fun and elegant system.
Music: A Tier
The music probably won't follow you outside the game (as in your humming or your car playlist), but inside the game it's completely immersive, perfectly dictating the rhythm and tone of each stage and each scene. The same can be said for the sound effects.
Final thoughts:
This game is a clear homage to the Megaman X / Megaman Zero series, but with its own identity and personality, built with the modern standards of the genre (such as the accessibility and customization options, and the “infinite lives” system). An absolute gem among action games, a god among 2D action platformers. If you're a fan of the genre, this game is 110% worth it.
Like a combination between Mega Man X, Street Fighter 2010, and Guacamelee. It's an absolute masterpiece of a game. While the main story is a bit short for seasoned players, there's plenty of content to 100%, speedrun, and get all the achievements. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who's played through the X or Zero series.
Genuinely incredible action platformer. So much polish and style. Highly recommended for anyone, but a must-buy for fans of the Megaman Zero GBA series.
Perfect 2D action / platformer. The gamefeel is incredible. Highly recommended
This game is an amazing precision platformer a 9.45/10
Very fun megaman-inspired game!
Uninstalled after about an hour. I love Mega Man type games. Have bought many, this is one that someone spent too much time on Super Mario Maker than designing a fledged out game. Let me explain: Super Mario Maker is a level design game that users make increasingly difficult/fun levels that other players test play and enjoy. This game's levels are designed on the difficult side of that. That does not mean the levels are "difficult". Just like SMM all levels are beatable and with enough tries beatable flawlessly. This game takes those difficult level designs that you have to "die first" to learn the level to beat it. Sometimes starting back at your checkpoint numerous times, after beating one challenge the next is a "whoops no platform there, fooled". If I want to play that type of game I will go play SMM, they did it FAR better than this (SMM is a triple A title, not comparing the two other than level designs). If that is your jazz and you like robots, play this game. If you are looking to have some fun and feel like Mega Man again, avoid this game.
Final boss needed way more playtesting, there's two undodgables that are completely unfair, they never stop attacking, and the mechanics force you to be in situations where you will get hit for trying to fight him because again, never stops attacking.
Some of the stages have terrible design choices or problematic design issues that rapidly become unfair and immensely frustrating. Mitigated somewhat by losing a life having no penalties, but it's still immensely frustrating and annoying.
Some enemies were designed for a megaman level, but megaman here has melee attacks. Oops..?
There's a lot of good here, but it needed way more playtesting, and a bit more of a lean on hard but fair, instead of bullshit but fair. It's still a good time, but I can't recommend it because of repeated frustrating design missteps.
In terms of indie action platformers, Shovel Knight is king. Gravity Circuit is the closest second we're ever gonna get.
Unless they make Gravity Circuit 2.
great game gives the same feal as mega man on the game boy and i streaming it today
punishing for button mashers
A really great side-scrolling 2D platformer. Borrows from a wide variety of inspirations, including Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Bionic Commando, and Celeste. The game is tough but fair! The controls are very responsive and feel about perfect imo. Game follows a very Mega Man-esque pattern of selecting stages. Level variety is pretty solid, with quite a few call-backs to 2D side-scrolling history (there is one stage in particular that has you ride vehicles and do time jumped, not unlike Mega Man X or Mega Man 8, that frustrated and delighted me).
This game is well-executed 2D nostalgia with some excellent modern spins and improvements. Music slaps too.
I am not done with the game yet, BUT ITS WHAT I WAS HOPING IT WAS AND MORE. I love the gameplay, style, charm, and characters!! If you love Megaman or love feeling like a ninja war machine, you will NOT regret buying this
