About the Game
Forget everything you know about first-person shooters: Void Bastards asks you to take charge, not just point your gun and fire. Your task is to lead the rag-tag Void Bastards out of the Sargasso Nebula. You make the decisions: where to go, what to do and who to fight. And then you must carry out that strategy in the face of strange and terrible enemies.
On board derelict spaceships you’ll plan your mission, taking note of the ship layout, what hazards and enemies you might encounter and what terminals and other ship systems you can use to your advantage..
Move carefully through the dangerous ships, searching for supplies and manipulating control systems. React to what you find - will you detour to the generator to bring the power back online or will you fight your way into the security module to disable the ship’s defenses? Choose carefully when to fight, when to run and when just to be a bastard.
Use your hard won supplies to improvise tools and weapons, from the distracting robo-kitty to the horribly unstable clusterflak.
Navigate your tiny escape pod through the vast nebula. Flee from void whales and pirates, and politely avoid the hungry hermits. All the while you must keep scavenging for the food, fuel, and other resources that keep you alive.
Void Bastards features a 12-15 hour campaign that you can complete with an endless supply of prisoners, each with their own unique traits. When one dies, another steps forward to carry on the fight. Don’t worry though, as any crafting progress you’ve made is retained from one to another.

Let me tell you a story about Sallie Walker.
From what you can gather from the promo material, this game is a rogue-lite where you play as a prisoner who is set out to gather materials from various stranded ships while trying not to die in the process, in order to upgrade your equipment and fix the ship and escape the nebula.
Sallie Walker was one of said prisoners, and she was next in line to get sent out into the void. I had previously shelved this game for a few years after buying it and having gone through a handful of previous prisoners, but I picked it up again the other day, determined to actually beat it this time. And playing for a while, I noticed that this prisoner, Sallie Walker, I was doing quite well with, and had already upgraded a fair amount of stuff with her, and kept her alive for a long while. So considering this good run, I became determined to keep her alive for the rest of this journey. She was going to make it out of this Nebula alive.
I went from day 45 to something like day 290 with Sallie, raiding ship after ship, upgrading weapon after weapon, and my armour, obtaining all the unique equipment that allowed me to find more ammo, and override security bots, and get cheaper prices in the stores, etc. Sallie was absolutely a force of nature. Even going from an arsenal consisting only of a basic pistol and a basic shotgun to having the entire arsenal and enough ammo AND food to supply a whole army, and going from basic armour to the best armour available (going from 100 HP to 1950 HP). There were a few close calls, including once where I actually died, but luckily I had unlocked the heart-starter upgrade a few ships earlier, so I managed to get Sallie away by the skin of her teeth. There were also other times where I lost track of my oxygen and started choking, or pissed off the security bots onboard, sprinting back to my own ship with only a sliver of health left, but I managed, and I shovelled a wheelbarrow's worth of sandwiches in my face to recuperate my health every time. Sallie was in it to win.
And win it we did! We fixed the ship, we got out of the nebula, and for all the trouble she had to go through, Sallie was awarded with... an eternal existence as a dehydrated powder in a bag in orbit around a planet with a trillion other bags.
... That kind of downer ending put a really sour note on an otherwise fun and engaging video game.
Now, don't get me wrong. The journey toward this destination was certainly fun, and the gunplay, enemy design, and presentation are fantastic, but that shouldn't come as a surprise considering that the people who made this also made System Shock 2 and Bioshock, so if you're a fan of these games, you'll find a lot of familiar elements in this game.
As you can probably tell from my little story above, the gameplay loop revolves around boarding ships, shooting the enemies on board, dodging the security and looting all the bins, lockers, boxes and drawers for various materials. After that you move on to the next ship, and then the next, and on and on it goes. Dying means nothing, as the prison ship AI will just send out another prisoner to continue the work, and each prisoner come with their own traits, both good and bad. You either obtain the necessary resources to further the story, or you die. The story is rather short, and takes place over the course of 5-6 steps where you fix the ship, and everything in between is just the core gameplay loop. It took me around 16 hours (minus menu time) to complete the game, but I also went out of my way to upgrade *everything* in the workbench, which is really not important to win, but it's certainly helpful.
After completing the first run, you unlock a variety of extra challenges that makes the game harder, like limiting resources, or your arsenal, or modifying the enemies to be faster and/or tougher. I haven't tried these modes, so I can't say anything about what they're like, but I can imagine for people who want a proper challenge, they'll be more engaging than the base game, as even though I spent a LOT of time completing it, it did start feeling a little too easy toward the end with all the upgrades at max.
I'll absolutely recommend the game for those who want a rogue-lite with some very satisfying gunplay and raunchy comedy, but I cannot recommend it for the story, as it's really not that good.
Great gameplay, funny dialogs, to the point.
good :)
good
bem rejogavel, divertido, com arte bonita e com um tom tatico e de economizar recursos excelente.
Pretty fun game once you get into it and dont care about losing your characters.
Feel some kind of disgust about banning the game in Russia, although it's still a good purchase on sale. Since we got so poor bunch of replaying features the game become too uninteresting after first playthrough.
Good roguelike, humor worked.
Fun but repetitive. I don't know if its worth the current list price of $30... maybe wait until its on sale. But its a finished game at least, funny and has some cool mechanics.
This game is an underrated and underappreciated gem. Nobody talks about this game and it's a shame. Now, I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but it is certainly a great game.
I played on the highest difficulty available to me in the beginning, and that made a lot of difference in my experience with the game. Despite the AI being lacklustre, being more vulnerable with less to work with starting off makes it a lot more stressful, allowing for that adrenaline rush when you get out. Many times during my play through, I went in confident and prepared and came out with little left. Some times I would audibly sigh 'Thank Fuck' to myself after it, because I only just made it back in one piece. The rouge-like elements work great here, as every ship has different variables to either hinder or help you in your search for parts. Managing fuel and food is important, and being out of either made me panic, as some runs I was near to getting the materials needed to craft an item needed to progress, and then end up starving to death or just float into space and then starve to death.
The upgrades in this game are okay. I never really was amazed at a new weapon, a part from a few exceptions, and upgrading them makes things really easy depending on the weapon, while others get outclassed later down the line, or even when they are first introduced. Primaries have this problem and secondaries have the same problem, but it's more prevalent there, but your weapons in the third slot are important for the sole fact that they can either be the most broken thing ever, or the most useless garbage. I'll let you guys figure them out, but some are actually insanely powerful. Other upgrades make the game a bit easier, with some making you faster and bulkier, some make things cheaper and others can give you more resources. They are basic, which isn't a bad thing, but some were really situational. I'd craft an item thinking It'd be useful to me in the long run, and then realising that it only works in certain situations.
I like the idea of every run having an different, random prisoner for you to control. It shows that the Void Ark has so many people on board ready to be re-hydrated, and makes each one feel like a tool rather than a character, which is really cool. It shows that in the future, human life is a lot less valuable to whatever space government controls the galaxy. I also really like that we start with random weapons, which means you might have to use a weapon you aren't used to using or to use a weapon that is generally just awful, giving yourself a handicap which adds to that tension you feel in the early to mid game. Each new prisoner can have positive or negative traits, and without these, I don't think the game play loop would be as entertaining for me as it is. These traits could make you really short, really tall, cough occasionally that alerts enemies, make the exit appear in a random spot and many more. You can roll your traits at certain ships on your travels, allowing you to build a character that could survive multiple parts of the story.
The crafting system is alright. I think using the scrap you find in your travels to make your tools are cool, and finding extra loot in containers is always a nice reward. Making certain materials out of your different types of scrap is cool, but depending on the item, it could take ages for you to even get the materials needed. There really isn't much to say about the crafting. The story is cool, but it doesn't really go anywhere. The concept is so sick and throughout the game, it never gets expanded on. I wish it did, as I think it'd be a better game for it.
Lastly, I want to talk about the DLC. It is pretty bad. I know it isn't supposed to be this big expansion, but for $7.50 AUD, it's lacking in all departments. You get one weapon, an upgrade to support that weapon, a new type of ship and a new enemy. Now the weapon itself is okay. It a fun gimmick weapon, but I wouldn't classify it as viable for your play through, and the ship itself doesn't have a lot going for it either. The enemy is fine, and it's gimmick is also fine, but all of this for $7.50 is just terrible.
This game is great, and it was made by a team that were obviously really passionate about the development, and it shows. The comic book style is amazing, and it makes the game stand out. Overall, I'd give this a 7.5/10. I wouldn't buy it a full price, however. as $42 AUD is a tad bit expensive.
Turn around the corner and BOOM goes the turist
Cool Roguelite <3
Fills a void in my life.
This is such an underrated gem that anyone who enjoys shooters and "roguelikes" should try
Void Bastards has a unique art style, an addictive gameplay loop and is balanced enough to make you want to play it more than once.
The game's main quest is well introduced, but it gets a little tedious. But I imagine that the main focus of the game is on surviving and using resources in the best possible way. In this regard, the game is simply surprising, with several immersive simulator mechanics.
Some ships will have very interesting modifiers that make you look for a way to overcome them effectively. Some of my most intense episodes were a stealth mission mixed with a giant shootout in a tight room. Choosing a good set of equipment is essential to progress in the game.
The sense of freedom to complete missions is very present and automatically trains you to adapt. The game's upgrades are very well implemented and balanced so that you don't get too strong too soon. Unlike many games of the genre, the grind in this game is not tedious or forced, I found that my interest in exploring the more difficult ships and their challenges was greater than gathering materials. In this case, they were another positive consequence of having explored well during the mission.
The variety of enemies is good and the game's art style makes you curious about what the next ones will be like. I strongly recommend that anyone who plays FPS shooters play on hard. Even though there is more than one strategy to approach combat situations, with good upgrades on my favorite weapons I could easily defeat enemies stronger than me.
The game has great exploration, a wide variety of scenarios, a very well thought out art style and sound design. It's definitely worth it if you're interested in rogue likes.
Interesting art style, terrible gameplay and level design. I really disliked this and would not pay any money for it as there are literally hundreds of better experiences out there. I think i got it as part of a humble bundle.
Unique game
Did not like.
Daddy, I'm scared
I own this on 2 platforms, and keep coming back to it. Unique premise, interesting weapons, great humor.
great game
Can say without a doubt this game will be less fun for some people but I think this is a perfect balance between resource mechanics and combat. it can get a little repetitive but the story based experience and humor of the game is a real stand out.
While I'm not a big fan of rouge-likes or fps games it had a fun story to play through and game play that never felt very repetitive. 8/10
Awesome game, really thought through. The polish is very high, and DLC recommended! Adds a useful weapon, but it comes with a tough enemy too haha
Pros:
- Alot of cool weapons with satifying combat . All the particle effects combined with the comic book art style makes each weapon really fun to use. Ammo is valuable and rare, but amassing a stockpile makes you feel like a king. The tactics are more focused on what you do when you approach combat, but once you are in it its basically just fight or flight
- A million different solutions to completing each salvage . Once you are in the ship, you can make a plan and route and hope nothing goes wrong in the process lol. my favourite option is befriending the secbot early-- amazing feeling to have him as your ally :)
- Roguelike paths (Slay the Spire style) but with manipulation so you can skip some stops, rest in place, etc. Every stop has advantages and disadvantages and its really fun to weigh them. Not to mention, you can basically tweak the difficulty mid-run by switching between nebula depth
Cons (imho really minor)
- Not a con for me but may be for others: the game is basically a loop of all the things I described above. Fetch quests + shootin'. That formula works for me--I found the depth and fun in said loop as I played it. but don't go looking for anything else crazy like a deep story or lots of mechanics
- Difficulty even on normal was pretty brutal at first. You really have to scrounge resources at the beginning and I never felt comfortable until I got to basically the endgame of a run. Maybe I played it wrong? If you don't mind grinding, it helps to linger on earlier nebula depths before trying the harder ones
10/10 game for me, i have no suggestions. Make a sequel maybe?
horrible game that tries to mask it's bad design as being unique or stylish
9/10
fun gameplay, but gets old very quickly.
I enjoyed the looter-shooting elements and they paired nicely with the stealth/rpg elements. Looking back this was a game I had to at least beat once, and I only wish there was more content!
Great game.
Not a good game unfortunately, close, but not worth the investment. Look at the playtime from many of the reviews and then compare this game to its peers. That's not a bulletproof way to make a decision here, but it's one signal worth considering since this is the genre of "replayability" and it is generally overpriced in comparsion.
Every run is so different. enjoyable.
not good
I beat this completely on Switch and got it on here because it's so good. A definite pick up.
This game is very challenging. You have a LOT you have to focus on. I watched my friend stream void bastards for a while before I gave it a go, and I was not disappointed. This game really puts your brain to the test.
Decent FPS roguelike
I've been playing it for a few hours after buying it at a steep discount and I'm really enjoying it. I'm pretty early in the game in terms of progression but I'm a little concerned about gameplay repetition; It doesn't necessarily have the depth of other $40 indie games but what this game does have is remarkably fun. Aesthetic cel shading, FTL-style path traversing, some light survival economy like food, fuel, money, health, and ammo.
The roguelite progression is compelling but I'm too early into the game to tell you how I feel about it, you build items with parts that you can make with scrapped parts or by finding relevant items in randomly generated galaxy node points; all of the unlocks and items continue over between runs (although positive and negative character traits are randomized between deaths).
Do I enjoy this $40 game? not a ton. Do I enjoy this $15 game? Absolutely, and I think you will too.
Tis good!
