simply in a league of its own Dues Ex is one of the greatest of all time.
this game caused me to unintentionally make over 100 screenshots
10/10
"This crackdown is the work of Majestic 12."
"You mean the European Union."
"They are a group of conspirators who have been seizing governments all over the world."
"I don't care what they call themselves. I have seen it since I was a girl, the plotting and scheming of corporations to make Europe into one big country with no separate languages, cultures, or tastes."
GODLY GAME!
Old game still up there with the best in my opinion.
Classic!
Even now, after all these years, this itteration of the unreal engine is still cool. Some fo the level design is fantastic and detailed. This engine still has some cool lighting and effects. (mirrors!)
Voice acting is pretty bad in some places, but I love the gameplay, multiple approaches to a problem, crawling thnrough vents, picking locks, overriding security systems, etc.
Love this game!
Deus Ex: A Majestic 5
TL;DR: Deus Ex is just as, if not even more, relevant today as it was 24 years ago. It’s a classic that is both timeless and incredibly relevant to the times. Its story, while rooted in the fantasies of yesteryear, feels more real than ever, and my god, it’s evenstill fun to play. Don’t let the dated visuals, archaic gameplay, and frankly prehistoric writing push you away. There’s never been a better time to play Deus Ex, except for, maybe, tomorrow.
Steam Deck Performance: Although this game was primarily designed for keyboard and mouse, I managed, with a lot of tinkering, to get the game playable on handheld. Lo and behold, it was somehow even more enjoyable than KBM that way. Make use of the programmable touch menus, back pads, and mode shifts, and you’ll be golden. (or download my control scheme :P)

Full Review:
Dynamic but Deprecated Software
Deus Ex is a game all of my friends love to talk about, so I was surprised when I discovered none of them have played it. I can understand why, as I was one of those people for the longest time. Old games are clunky, confusing, hard on the eyes and harder to control. It’s putting it mildly to say they tend to not run well, and that’s if the devs have even bothered putting them on something like Steam. Although we see the past through rose-tinted glasses and are quick to sweep obvious issues under the rug, when playing something as old as Deus Ex you can really see how far the entire medium has come. Playing old games is bloody hard work, and Deus Ex is no different.
Deus Ex has a breathtaking amount of serious issues with its core gameplay, that I need to go over as part of a “modern-perspective” review. Firstly, your ability to explore gets off to a rocky start, especially for an immersive sim. Your navigation tools are costly:even the luxury of having a torch on rapidly drains your valuable energy, while others might just not show up. For example, you won’t be able to upgrade your paraplegic-tier jump until you find an easily missable augment. Sneaking, without the blessing of other rare augments, feels like a joke. Consequently, the path of least resistance is usually just ridding the level of enemies. “Peaceful” combat options were particularly finicky, especially the dreaded cattle prod, so without the game rewarding my pacifism enough I quickly chose violence. This was disappointing when coming from the modern deus ex games, where pacifism was a fun and rewarding way of stepping up the difficulty. Too often, it felt like the keys to the way forward were hidden so arbitrarily that I had to kill everything to even have a chance of finding them, when I really wanted a chance to sneak through instead. Even with enemies out of the picture, exploring the empty map can still be a chore. The rarest resource in the game are also the very tools that allow you to explore (lockpicks and multitools), and I was often so low on these I had to resort to lugging around an RPGas a replacement. With a significant chunk of inventory space taken up by a rocket-powered doorknob – and no ability to upgrade my inventory – I spent a little too much time rationing my dwindling storage space.
With the pain points out of the way, the rest of my experience was still marvelous. Although some maps were definitely linear, others were wonderfully complex. The game gets off to a rough start, but once you have your character, equipment and augmentations set up, the possibilities begin to multiply in front of you. Each mission blossoms from a nasty corridor full of buggy AI to an enormous, intricate puzzle box. Learning how to abuse strange cocktails of augments and equipment to get where you want really scratched my cyberpunk itch, especially given how overtuned the augments become as they are upgraded. I absolutely adore the fact that you can’t have all the augments either. It makes one JC Denton – along with his path through each mission – completely different to the next. Although it was initially a source of pain, I loved how little Deus Ex babies you. You are a trained UNATCO agent, you don’t need to be told what to do. Just figure it out yourself. The game can be enormously unforgiving, and while I didn’t like this at first, I grew to love how little resourcing decisions made early on in missions came back to bite me in the face later on, forcing me to make tough decisions. I just wish they hadn’t made save scumming so easy, because without any kind of autosave, there was a lot of that happening too. At least I didn’t feel encouraged to do that with the story.
My Future Vision is Augmented
What can I say about this game’s story and setting that hasn’t already been said? “Ahead of its time” doesn’t do it justice. This game featured terrorists destroying a New York landmark one year before the actual thing happened in 2001. It predicted a global pandemic causing worldwide panic and lockdown. A good political piece feels relevant to everyone as it is made. A great political piece somehow still feels relevant decades after its creation. The game still rocks that old sexy, refined and educated approach to covering global conspiracy theories that has been ruined by today’s basement-dwelling mouth-frothers. Deus Ex has a way of planting a scarily convincing seed in your brain that asks you “What if the Illuminati WAS real”. Hell, it even makes the prospect of that reality kind of cool.
The setting itself is just awesome too. The sun doesn’t exist in Deus Ex’s world; it’s probably just another unproven conspiracy. Everything needs to be dark, sleek, and mysterious. The game has two moods: Seedy and Sterile. Either you’re crawling through the sewer of an Asian red-light district, or the outflow-pipe of a secret facility’s manufacturing plant. It’s found the middle of the sci-fi, film-noir and James Bond Venn diagram and it wears that tonal perfection with smug pride. And the music… God, the music. Alex Brandon cooked up the darkest, synthiest, most brooding continuous eargasm known to man (at least until 198XAD by Mega Drive released), and turned the immersion up to eleven. I can practically feel the nanobots booting up in my blood whenever I play.
The actual story of Deus Ex isn’t bad either, although it definitely isn’t the pure perfection found elsewhere. The story had me repeatedly caught and lost like a greasy fishing hook: some parts had me turning up to work late the next morning, while others just had me plain confused. The stilted, unsure voice acting, and seriously dated writing didn’t help, and I was surprised that the series’ dubious practice of springing the ending choice on you only five minutes before you have to make it started with this game. Sometimes, it felt like the team had come up with this incredible, detailed and diabolical world, and then had to quickly write and shove a story that somewhat worked into it. It definitely felt like an afterthought, at certain points. Still, it had its surprises, and if I learned anything, it’s to stay out of the ladies’ restroom.
The last thing I need to mention is that I was lucky enough to come at Deus Ex with a fresh perspective, unswayed by memories or nostalgia. I can genuinely confirm that this game stood the test of time way better than many of its compatriots, and that it’s Zoomer brain-certified™. Although, like any old low-poly game, it has more than a few rough edges. It’s a shockingly relevant masterpiece that is genuinely a blast to play (at least most of the time). Grab your GEP gun, invisibility augment, and surprisingly lethal cigarettes and smash down that secret door you know is hidden in the women’s bathroom. You never know what kind of secrets that might uncover...
5/6: Excellent

This is a classic masterpiece. A groundbreaking title for the genre. My favorite game of all time.
After beating the game I can safely say that this is one of the greatest games of all time and it absolutely deserved the GOTY award. Some things still don't hold up like aiming being extremely slow in the early game but it gets a lot better. But the story is probably one of the best I have ever played with some of the things in game actually happening in real life.
By far one of the best conspiracy games and it is definitely worth your money.
Deus Ex is the a fantastic game that deserved more time to really shine, but all that it has set up will forever be cherished in gaming history.
One random great thing worth mentioning: The actual number of locations in the world you go to is pretty crazy. Modern Immersive SIms can't deliver the variety of locations this one has. They have varying degrees of accuracy but who cares.
One random bad thing: I think modern machines can mess with the AI some causing them to re-position faster than was intended. Just check up for mods or tweaks to configs.
It's good but I accidentally autosaved instead of autoloaded just before a death, and I ONLY used autosave so uh.. not beating it unfortunantly
Almost 25 years ago, I first stepped into the dystopian cyberpunk world of Deus Ex. As JC Denton, a rookie UNATCO agent, I was trying to stop terrorist organisations and investigate a nano-virus that is plaguing the planet. The story is profound, with many plot twists, while providing observations of themes such as social class divisions, capitalism, transhumanism and conspiracy theories. Deus Ex is a mix of first person shooter and RPG elements with in depth character customisation options and technological upgrades. Weapons are likewise customisable and numerous electronic systems can be hacked and used to your advantage. The level design is great, and there are multiple ways that one can complete an objective. Player choices matter as well, and will influence how some events play out in the story. The visual style and atmospheric soundtrack are an intricate part of the experience as we explore the various environments offered. To say I was immersed was an understatement, the storytelling is some of the best I've experienced, in any medium. Technically there are issues with launching this game on modern day PC rigs as well as crashes. There are some mods available that can improve the experience in this regard. Several aspects of the game certainly show their age now, as would be expected, but Deus Ex at its core is one of my top videogames of all time, an experience I will never forget and one that has become increasingly rare in this day and age.
Dated, but still an incredible game. Great story, great characters, and an amazing protagonist. The only thing that brings the game down is the fact that the prequels exist.
An essential for those who are fans of the System Shock/Ghost in the Shell genre. Has a certain quality which the later Deus Ex games just lack.
Legendary game. It's quite dated in some gameplay aspects but it's story and dialogues are like no other, one of the most unique experiences in gaming.
2 minute TLDR:
Can't recommend the game enough, Deus Ex is a gem in today's gaming landscape. Sure, it's a bit clunky, and it took me a bunch of attempts to "get into it" but once I crossed that barrier, I was hooked.
The sheer level of gameplay you can experiment with here is, frankly, insane. The game's narrative accounts for a lot of your choices too, unlike a lot of other games that may have trouble with the player taking certain unexpected actions to solve problems, Deus Ex really tries to think of everything. The story feels tight and gripped me once I got past the first mission. There's a lot going on with the story so I won't spoil it but I highly recommend the game for that aspect alone, but if you really like experimenting with mechanics in immersive sims you *have* to try this one.
I played this for the first time in 2024, after only playing Human Revolution years ago and not remembering much from it. I have to say, after seeing this so high on GOAT games lists, I can now see why. This must have been absolutely mind blowing if played back in the day. Even today it was extremely enjoyable. With that being said, it doesn't run the greatest on my modern system so I ran into crazy FPS drops fairly often but no crashes. I'm sure there may be fixes to this but I was too lazy and just dealt with it when it happened.
Buy and play it before MJ12 takes it away!
it's one of those games that left me speechless. How can a 24 year old game be so good!
Never seen anything like this and probably never will. Great soundtrack, atmosphere and game play and superb story. it's so good you feel like reading a very good novel that you can immerse yourself in, it's just unbelievable! when i opened it my expectations were very low but as soon as i started it i realized how much this game was ahead of its time, since i had experience with games from that era. Most games still haven't achieved the silky smooth game play it has. needless to say, it's filled with truth bombs so get it ASAP before democracy falls :'(
i wanna have deus sex with jc denton
(i only have .1 hours because i play with a bugfix mod)
While it is clunky in its controls and mechanics, Deus Ex is an awesome game. The premise is unique, the devs quite literally thought; "What if all the conspiracy theories you see in the tabloids were true?". Many of the events in the game ring true in today's world, funnily enough. It's quite entertaining, and a good blast to the past for those who enjoy older games.
One of the best games in world. Played through it like 8 times before buying it on steam.
If you still haven't played this, it's a true gem of gaming history. The level design, immersion, dialog, plot, characters, atmosphere, and reactivity to player choice are still utterly incredible to this day. So many fantastic moments and emotional highs in this story that I won't soon forget. It has aged like a fine wine, and it was a smooth and refreshing experience that reminded me once again of the heights games can aspire to. It is also perhaps the most quotable game I've ever played. I would easily rate this among the top ten games I've ever played or higher. and this is all backed by a stunning soundtrack that had me totally entranced. As a final note, the themes and dilemmas this game focuses on are extremely relevant to this day.
This is one of the greatest PC games ever made. It's fun, it's clever, and if you know to pay attention, you'll find it's also profound. It is foundational for many games that follow the Immersive Sim design philosophy, such as Dishonored and it's sequels. In some areas it shows it's age, but that adds to the charm. This one's a certified classic.
The running is still so funny. This game is an OG classic. So many ways to play it. Multiple approaches to every mission and a lot of choices mattering before then was really a thing. Great level design, weapons, skills and combat. A must play.
True Cyberpunk classic from the golden age of gaming, with countless followers but there can only be one!
Amazing game! Great story, great gameplay, great fun!
Outdated in places but overall a great game.
Since the game came out, I never had the patience to complete it. I always gave up somewhere in the middle.
But when I play on Steam Deck, I can grind without any problems. And I must say that the game (after installing mods) works great on the device.
For the first time since the game came out, I finally finished it, and what a great game it is. I liked it so much that immediately after completing the vanilla version, I installed the GMDX mod and completed the game for the second time.
The story is still relevant and interesting. The music is simply gorgeous. The atmosphere of the world, despite the outdated graphics, looks believable. And with the GMDX mod, this is my go-to version of the game.
P.S. I tried the Revision mod, but I didn't like how the developers remade the maps.
One of the greatest computer experiences ever envisioned... and it also predicted 9/11
Not only was this game impressive for its time, it was also *really* ahead of it as well.
Seriously, this game unintentionally predicted both 9/11 and Covid. Just to name a few.
In Steam version I mostly played Revision, but I have 2008 edition licensed disk.
Replayed it a TON of times.
Best Deus Ex. A gem released ahead of it's time
Unfortunately, this game is still very relevant when it comes to its themes and social critique.
If you can get past that, its a really fun game. You have so much freedom to choose how you approach situations, unlike in my real life.
Must play. Make sure to the deusexe launcher to alleviate the very few problems the vanilla game has.
It takes a bit to get use to some of them older controls and game mechanics, but once you do your in for a great game with catchy music, compelling story, and open ended gameplay. Worth a play just for the dialogue from JC.
Fantastic classic, the themes/story are awesome. And the soundtrack is perfect
absolute gold.
use deus ex transcended if you want to make the game as cobweb-free on your modern PC.
With Deus Ex, Warren Spector and Paul Neurath did set a new standard for the industry
as for it's scenario, it's a little unrealistic, I mean, I really don't see some of the crazy shit happening in this game occuring in the real world, come on
I'm sure they will never ever struggle to find a publisher after that one
Deus Ex stands the test of time thanks to its excellent story, music and gameplay design. While individual aspects of the game can feel lacklustre, it's the sum of its parts that make it great.
I recommend looking into community patches if playing on a modern system. Without them, the game appears extremely dark, among other issues.
Cannot anything that anyone has already said about this game, absolute classic and absolute masterpiece
It's good, I'm not done yet but I'm having fun. A bit old and rough around the edges maybe but still good.
Tired of today's slop filled with woke DEI crap? Here is a legendary classic game to enjoy instead.
Just make sure to install Kentie's launcher and Direct3D 10 renderer to run on modern systems properly, instructions can be found here: https://youtu.be/cBx4ZGtWX_4?si=2NlO4ocw3LDQCULH
Half-life's overshadowed brother. This game is a masterpiece from sound design, writing, gameplay, and progression perspectives. I know it was released in 2000, but give it a chance.
Runs great on Steamdeck if you go into compatibility settings and set it to Proton 7
Indescribably good. The story is a very great depiction of a fantasy style dystopian society being ruled by a shadow gov, that feels like it hits too close to home for the player. I cannot get enough of this game and the dark and paranoid feel that it has.
Loved this game when it first came out. I spent countless hours on the first mission. Now many years later this game still holds up. A classic. Modern gaming owes a lot to this epic.
For a good game, this game is infuriatingly terrible at the same time. Everything is good EXCEPT the map design. I have never been more lost in a game in my 40 years of playing games. Even with godmode and other cheats enabled. I spent 99% of my time trying to figure out where in the hell I'm supposed to go. The game even has you backtrack through the god awful zones sometimes. The freaking literal MAZE and CATACOMBS were infinitely easier to navigate than new york/paris/hong kong, and don't even get me stared on area 51. I would just aimlessly run around until I accidentally ended up where I was supposed to be. I cannot overstate how miserable and garbage tier the level design is in this game. I wouldn't recommend this game to my worst enemy.
Not much to say for graphics or combat but the story is top notch and something I enjoyed
this is the first FPS i ever played. Amazed how my uncle got to hong kong in a night , i had to revisit and do it myself. Only 20 years later. This is the foundation of FPS/RPG
Deus Ex é o jogo, lembre-se de fazer o treinamento no menu caso seja sua primeira vez jogando ou você vai ter problemas que podem ser evitados se jogar o treinamento.
Playing a game about the perils of bio-engineering, corporate espionage, and AI in 2024 hits a lot different than it did in 2000. If you want a game that challenges your ideology as well as your mechanics, pick this one up.
The build you get here is very old and partially broken in modern windows it seems. Still playable but with plenty of graphical glitches. The game is great either way
only playing this for the first time in 2024 and. i didnt realize when people said this was the best PC game ever they actually meant it. wow
