(This is a backlog review since I beat this more than two years ago.)
"Huge Enemy - Worldbreakers is one of those games I'm not sure whether to give a recommendation or a not recommended on Steam. On one spike it looks quite cool and isn't crushingly awful and has one of the more hilarious bad-English lines I've seen in a game lately. On the other, it has incredibly janky menus, nearly requires a controller since the only other option, "keyboard+mouse," is implemented terribly, and is rather poorly-balanced as shoot-'em-ups go, mostly in the player's favor." was how I quickly described it back then.
Since then I decided I didn't like it but also I noticed it was free so yeah you might as well play it for that price.
Developers should teach themselves a thing or two about optimization before undertaking such projects
Mixed feelings on this unusual but spectacular side scrolling shooter & bullet hell.
PROS
+ Graphics are incredible. Really. Beautiful. Peculiar. Stylish. Trust me, you'll have a hard time finding something as unique as this. Reds, blacks, glowing stripes, electric plasma, fireworks-in-the-night effects (probably firework aestethics is one of the main sources here), heavy rain, levels and levels of parallax scrolling, luxury spaceships prOn, giant mech robots. This game has it all. And swarms, many many swarms.
Better play it on a large (at least 24") monitor, though, otherwise many little details could get lost.
+ Game mechanics: as someone already said, here "Bullet hell" becomes "Enemy ships hell", because you'll have to avoid bullets AND gazillions of microscopic ships, coupled with larger ones. To get a grip on them you'll have to power up your 4 weapons as soon as possible (by earning money) and learn how to use the "dive" button - you will use it a lot to avoid being overwhelmed by ships! Add to this a button to reshield, absorbing energy from large enemy ships when they appear on screen (you can't shoot meanwhile), and an automatic 'payback' every time you are hit: you can choose attack (destructive, but not easy to handle) or defense in form of invulnerability shield: both last some seconds. Even seasoned shmups veterans will find these combinations quite unusual and interesting.
+ The game is not punishing for the sake of it, as nowadays many shooters sadly (well, in my opinion) tend to be, some doing that just to artificially extend game time: in HE-W once a level is completed you can start again from it, and you can switch easy/hard mode without having to start back from Level 1. Even score is cumulative: if you replay a level and beat it with more points, they will be added to your total score. All in all, easy mode is pleasant and fun...
CONS
-... but HARD mode is brutal, especially because the last (11th) level is only available in this mode and if you come from easy you'll find the final boss bordering impossible - and you'll have to replay the long first part of the level just to be quickly trashed in the second; same for a couple of secret bosses. In general, if you manage to replay previous levels to grind money and upgrade weapons, even in hard mode some levels will be a breeze - but bosses will not (and reshield won't work during boss fights) .
- The game already endured some major gameplay changes: it's good that developpers tried to refine playability, but they left behind some bugs in cutscenes (if you have vsync ON), no clear instructions on how to get weapon upgrades (they won't appear if you don't have at least 1000k, or 900k for energy shields), a general sense of clunkiness in the interface, some unnecessary (and slow) transitions to shop screen just to change ship, loading times that become annoying after a while - all of this leaves players with an unpleasant feeling of lack of polish and direction, in stark contrast with the highly polished graphic department (and even music is not bad).
- Graphics are beautiful (did I just say that?) but heavy on the hardware, which is really unusual (again) for a scrolling shooter, although a polygonal one at that: the screen can be so ovecrowded that your videoboard will work A LOT; I've not experienced really noticeable slowdowns with my Corei7, but my gtx1060 fan sure went loud in many occasions and even reached maximum speed a couple times: this game could easily be used as a video card test/benchmark, so probably they should have inserted at least some performance tuning options.
- (not sure about this, I could be wrong) The hit window of the ship seems at times randomly inconsistent, as if trying to adjust forgiveness based on how the player is behaving or some other criteria (speed?): e.g. in certain areas if you move constantly you can dodge overcrowded situations where there's apparently not a single free pixel on screen, but in others it gets back to one-shot one-hit.
- The ending cutscene is identical in both easy and hard mode :-(
BOTTOM LINE
Considering this is the debut game for the dev team, they put on show some interesting ideas and a shiny execution, at least in the most visible of departments: unfortunately, the sum of its minor -but noticeable- defects is preventing Huge Enemy to achieve greatness as a whole.
Nonetheless, if you are a shooter enthusiast, you definitely should try this. And if you are a graphics enthusiast, you MUST try this and be forever grateful it was brought to humankind.
/edit: typos and more details on gameplay.
This game is an hidden gem !
Sure it's not perfect, but i was fun and intense.
Pro :
- VISUALS ! it's gorgeous. 2D animated , really detailled and with a modern touch. I never seen something like that before.
- new way to play a shmup , it's original . not like classic gameplay , but worth the try .
- Music is awesome . First i was surpised by the style , but i fell in love with these tracks.
- it's really fresh and intense.
- challenging Bosses.
Cons:
- Loading time ... ( i know there is so many frames in the art, but guys...)
- some of bosses last too long ( the mecanic spider and the last big cruiser)
- level design weakness, sometimes.
- lacks of visibility in few situations.
This game was made by a little team and devs have makes some mistakes but it's a great game, an original proposition.
It's a shmup , and you have to focus to survie. You can't really shoot all the enemies in the swams you will encouter ( so many sprites !!!). it's seem like dev want to change bullet hell in enemies hell . It's not so hard , i beat the game in 2 hours in easy mode. Hard mode is more challenging after you've learned the game .
"Dodge" action is fun and level design is original because of that feature ( sort of obstacle level was really good!).
Weapons are each efficient against some type of enemies, and you have to adjust for each situation if you want to improve your score.
Bosses are awesome , i think it's the big point of the game.
I don't understand why this game was not much known... even with it's flaws it smells love of gaming and it offer a lot to the open minded gamer.
just try it , it's my advice.
Pros:
- Great bosses and plenty of them
- Unique mechanics that set it apart
- Catchy music
- Over the top action
- Responsive controls
- Four firing modes that excel at different things
- Two different ships and a bit of customization to suit your playstyle
Cons:
- RPG system does not work well
- You'll stick to using whatever gun you invested in upgrading
- You grow far too overpowered and breeze through stages
[*] No save slots or reverting your upgrades so you are stuck being OP
Huge Enemy Worldbreakers is an interesting shmup that suffers from a bit of balancing issues. It has changed a great deal over the course of its updates in where entire gameplay features, like a targeting cursor that allowed you to aim at specific areas. That has been changed into an automatic lock on and firing mode, where you only need to focus on not getting blown to smithereens by the massive firepower the bosses pack.
It is a continually growing game that is not in Early Access. Make no mistake though, it has a good amount of content and it is a finished product. The developers seem to be mostly focused on tweaking the gameplay for the better.
All that said, while the stages themselves become incredibly easy as we upgrade our guns, the boss fights are where Worldbreakers shines. There are 14 of these hulking warmachines to face and some are so well armored, we are merely tasked with surviving our encounter. It's a great deal of fun, especially when playing on Hard where you don't have any invincibility frames and may find yourself ambushed with new bosses after barely making it out of the first fight.
I didn't intend to write a pseudo-review, but Steam doesn't allow you to simply recommend a game without adding some text, so I may as well as it would be a shame if this title was overlooked. Huge Enemy Worldbreakers has its flaws, though is one title that fans of the genre would do well to keep an eye on.
For my actual full written review head over to 3GR Worldbreakers
just bought this game, im really enjoying playing it, Awesome shoot em up with incredible Graphics & super cool bosses, lots of levels to keep you entertained, i must admit it gets proper hard especially stage 3 its more enemy hell than bullet hell, love the mega weapons that i have available, and great weapons in general, lots of practise needed for this game because it is a challenge and there is some neat touches being able to manouvre your ship in and out of the background to avoid enemy fire and other threatening obstacles, also you can regenerate your shields from the bosses which his very useful and gives you a good chance at defeating them..Overall i love this game and so glad i purchased it, Amazing work guys & both thumbs up from me :)
