this game is so fun and well optimized, it even works on my IBM T42 laptop from 2004 without a hitch.
safe to say that it will run on anything.
would recommend to anyone even if they have no ibm t42 (aka smelly people)
I have 180 hours of gameplay and 3000 deaths. Half of those deaths were self-inflicted due to explosive weapons. This makes my boiling veins.
The feeling of entering the boss room, and the moment you walk in... Exactly 5 snipers will aim at you and shoot you right after. detail, I'm playing with Melting. Unfortunately you don't have the chance to make a last wish.
And I learned that taking off cars in areas where there is ice on the ground is the worst possible idea. Because the chances of the car hitting the wall and coming back at you are huge. Sometimes I get stress because of this.
And I don't have the patience to write this
warning this game is addictive.
i have yet to beat this game in 14 hours of gameplay...
I LOVE IT SM BUY IT NOW.
A classic roguelite
I can see the great game here, but I didn't realize when I bought it that the game runs at 4:3 at 30 fps. There is a beta branch of the game that has widescreen with 60 fps, but that version has a bug where the controller setting doesn't stick (it keeps disabling the controller and switching back to keyboard/mouse controls after a run). Also it seems like the developer may have stopped work on it, but I may be wrong there. If that bug gets fixed, I'd gladly repurchase, but for now I refunded it.
Great game, Rather difficult.

A simple and good game.
You don't need to grind for hundreds of hours to unlock the "fun" stuff.
Straight forward design, the mechanics might be unforgiving at times, but strikes a good balance as kind of an arcade-y vibe.
Great for a quick pick up that doesn't require you to commit hours of playtime at once.
great with friends, greater with four rogues
Don't understand the hype around this rogue-like (yes, like, not lite, there's nothing to unlock apart from new characters).
While it does offer a decent variety of characters, weapons, enemies and levels, you'll probably have seen most of it within 2 hours.
I've pretty much found the same weapons every run. There's a variety of solid shot, energy and explosive weapons, like grenade launchers, rocket launchers, SMGs, laser pistols, crossbows, etc.
Characters are unlocked by just reaching certain levels it seems, and they're decently different, but I found that most of them are just "even harder mode". Not having access to the dodge roll or the even better block ability just doesn't seem particularly viable, unless you're so hardcore you're corehard.
Levels are always the same with minor variations. There's a specific set list you go through in each run, but there can be some differences at some points. Enemies are level-dependent, and every level is a sort of "maze" structure.
The mutations, aka level-ups, aren't interesting, either. They probably get a bit more complex, once you unlock more characters, since it seems the game is pulling them from each one of them, but I doubt that you'll deviate much from "this is the best I can have".
Now, my real issue (yeeeeah, git gud, scrub, I don't care) comes from the fact that the game is simply brutally unforgiving and unfair. Enemies do an absurd amount of damage to you, and your health pool is so small, I wonder why they even bothered with health pickups, since come level 3 or so all it takes is like 2 to 3 hits to go from full health to 0 health.
This is, obviously, exacerbated with each succeeding level, meaning you'll literally get one-shot, so health pickups worth 2 health are pointless if you simply die in 1 hit.
Of course, the game also evolves into a literal bullet hell, often dropping you into the middle of an unwinnable fire fight right from the start of a level, with enemies all around you shooting endlessly. Frantic doesn't even describe it.
All in all I can't find anything special about Nuclear Throne. Neither the setting, nor the weapons, nor the game mechanics are anything to write home about. It's simply a game for masochists, which is FINE ... it's just important that you know what you're getting yourself into, hence the "not recommended". It really is only for a VERY niche audience of which I am apparently not a part of.
If your idea of fun is to rerun the same 2 to 3 levels with basically the same setup over and over again in the vain hopes of maybe reaching level 4 or 5 at some point, without ever getting stronger or unlocking new equipment, and if you love twitch reaction top down shooters with very rough pixel art, then this game is for you. If you're not part of that specific audience, play literally any other rogue-like/lite.
There's like a fish right, but get this, he can ROLL.
Indisputably the best action game of all time
El padre de Enter The Gungeon
Simple divertido y super arcade 10/10
Te quiero Vlambear
A game I've owned since release; a fantastic twin-stick shooter that deserves a spot among the greats. Each zone feels different; from the enemies to environmental hazards that get introduced, they all feel like natural additions to the post-apocalyptic theme of the game.
The weapons you pickup are satisfying and while I have my preferences, they are all useful, even the 'lowly' pistol you start with.
You can carry up to two weapons at a time, each weapon falls under a certain class. When you pickup ammo for that class, all weapons under that class can use it. You can pickup and drop/swap on the fly too. At the end of each level, upon killing the final enemy, a portal will spawn to take you to the next area. It has a gravity pull on it, so you try to avoid it if there are still some pickups you missed. Take too long though and there are consequences.
Also, the more progress you make, the more new enemies get unlocked (some are outright bullet-hell machines) and the more characters you unlock to play with. They are all very different and demand different approaches and tactics. But wait, it doesn't stop there as you pick up little green blobs from kills and chest looting you accumulate XP to use on upgrades between areas which can alter your play style mid-run.
It's a rogue-like twin-stick bullet-hell shooter that somehow throws something new at you with each attempt. And when you do die, it doesn't feel cheap; nope, usually, when you die, you know exactly why and that it was almost definitely... your fault.
A great game that you will enjoy if you're into this genre. And even if you're not into shmups, try it anyway.
I fucking hate little hunter i hope he slips and dies
Super fun and action roguelike arcade !!!!
From power trip to scared for my life to dead on the ground in 6 frames flat
One of the goats. still wishing for a 60fps version
if you like bullet hell with shit graphics
One of the best run and gun games I've ever played. Super underrated game.
Great game. you will never run out of things to find out!
Probably one of the best videogames ever made, and the best roguelike out there.
this is just a really good game in general, but 1 thing i especially like is the positioning of the main menu button on the death screen is slightly below the quit button on the main menu, making it really quik to quit
I hate this game and it hates me. 10/10 would recommend
где обновы, я устал 8 лет ждать, когда новых персонажей добавят
To this day the only rogue-like I have ever beaten and is by far the best. The gameplay is smooth and each gun feels wholly unique from the last, A+.
the nuclear throne???? more like,,, my toilet!!!!!!
i just ripped a nuclear fard
rip my boy mr. feels
#bringbackrickastleyjustthrewup
kill/ die-- either or. so fast. so fun.
I've played 1000s of hours of action roguelikes (Isaac, Gungeon, etc) and this is overall the best of em all. I don't need no friends, I don't need no phone, just a bag of severed heads and the NUCLEAR THRONE.
it too kme 3 years to realise this game is not just good its sigma asf!!! Especially y.v
Things that make this game exceptional:
1. The game respects your time. Levels play fast, it's fast to boot up, no cutscenes, no filller. It's also difficult from the start such that you don't feel punished on successive runs by having to fight your way through easy grunts before enjoying the game. Players do not feel nearly as discouraged from taking risks or experimenting with weapons as in other roguelikes. Despite having very low hours in the game initially, I kept coming back to it.
2. The gameplay is solid. It's fun and has great-feeling twin-stick controls. It feels like an arcade game in that levels are simply designed stages with randomly spawned enemies. The enemies are simple, but are quite different from each-other. As a result, you get the idea of the game really quick but the gameplay is interesting, exciting and fresh each run. This, and the high difficulty makes you keep coming back. The game doesn't seem to have any major design flaws.
3. The guns feel really good to shoot, and enemies feel good to shoot. Nice and satisfying effect on gameplay, visuals, sounds. You'll get what I mean if you play. And there are a lot of guns, available from the start. The game doesn't really change much in that you don't make it easier by unlocking permanent upgrades. Some may not like the sound of that, but this isn't a game for collecting as much as to provide a genuine experience and challenge. The game elements are not time-gated from you.
4. The playable characters, NPC's and environments are really cool and creative.
TLDR: If you like roguelike games, like arcade games, are low on time, have an itch for action (and don't mind if it's in 2D), or just want a simple game, I highly recommend this game!
Cool game. I love fallout 3
Awesome on the steamdeck. Running at 60FPS by turning on the beta version for 2021 in the games properties. Next go to settings and enable 60FPS.
I would probably put this in my top 10 favorite games of all time. I used to bring this game to school on a flash-drive and play it instead of doing my work in keyboarding class. It may have taken me two hours to type out and spellcheck this review, but I got some pretty good runs back in the day at least.
Game used to make me jump out of my skin. I stopped playing it because I simply could not relax. It was like adrenaline being pumped straight into my veins.
But I made it. I found the Nuclear Throne. And maybe you will, too. I'll be keeping the seat warm for you.
lowkey pisses me off but it's a 10/10 game
too addicting, can't stop playing
I've actually probably spent 50+ hours playing this game. The guns and characters are fun its quick paced and hectic. If you like 2 bullet hell rogue lite style games like enter the gungeon, crypt of the necro dancer or binding of issac you'll probs enjoy this.
Honestly one of the best feeling rogue-lites I've ever played, I've done essentially everything there is to do and I still come back for more
I've been playing for 12 hours and it remains extremely challenging and entertaining
I don't think any game can quite replicate the feeling of reaching the Nuclear Throne for the first time. This game is quite an experience, the world, characters, art, and soundtrack are all amazing. And the gameplay even better. Literally the only bad part of this game is the fact that barely anyone seems to know it exists. RIP Vlambeer
very challenging but very rewarding, one of the faster roguelikes. love it 9/10
Awesome arcadey roguelike, legit top 3 roguelikes imo
Its brief and simple, yet diversified gameplay loop and characters are as addicting and fun as everyone says, but I have a few contentions:
Am I the only one that has a problem with how the exit portals in this game suck you in and end the level so abruptly when I didn't want to leave just yet? Alternatively, even sometimes obstructing your path from getting more items in the level due to the portal's massive draw? It's such an obtrusive mechanic at times, to which I know you can technically prevent by keeping the last enemy in the level alive, but for a game that so desperately wants to consistently maintain such an extremely fast pace, doing so seems counterintuitive. I understand that the game just wants to move me forward perpetually, but this mechanic is more frustrating than intuitive.
Lil' Hunter is such a poorly implemented boss due to how randomly generated the level terrain is. He just... sucks to fight, regardless of difficulty or skill. With every other boss in the first loop, you are basically guaranteed enough space to fight regardless of remaining enemy placement, but not for Lil' Hunter. While I am not great at this game, and with enough time spent he becomes slightly easier to handle overall, Lil' Hunter is still just such a dramatic - and in my opinion, not fun - spike in difficulty and frustration.
From a skill standpoint, with how big of a gap in accessibility there is for most of the endgame content compared to the rest of the game, I am probably done playing this game for now! The next milestone in my playthrough feels just too far out of reach for me personally.
Goated game. Feel like a lot of people dont have the patience to get good so quite literally a skill issue but it goes so hard. Also the law is pretty sick.
One of the all time classics of indie rogue-like games. Simple but effective gameplay loop and plenty difficult. Turn screen shake down if you like being able to see, or don't if you like the authentic Nuclear Throne experience :)
Twin-stick roguelike, similar to enter the gungeon or Soul Knight, highly recommended if you enhoy any of those, plus music is great
