Accidentally did a car with my wrench and died instantly.
10/10.
Don't think I've come close to blowing a fuse in a long time, like I have in this game, especially a single player one. I alt-f4'd probably 30-40 times so far, within the past 6-7 out of 15 hours I've played. I battled the line of too much determination, versus wanting to just throw in the towel and delete this shit off my account. Not exactly the rag to riches tale per se, but I have come to 'enjoy' (still somewhat loosely) Nuclear Throne, increasingly more so the more time I put in. Like others, coming from Isaac, Gungeon, Hades, all the others etc etc., it was very off putting at first. Still haven't beaten the game at 15 hours, but made it to end, and got blasted by some BS you have to experience to know to avoid. The game is kind of filled with that. That is what the difficulty is, basically just a 15 hour learning process. So it's not hard in the fact that you are trying to do calculus proofs, but sort of in a monkey see monkey do. So, borderline giving up, barely able to make it to the 2nd-3rd world a lot of the time early (junkyard/ice world), you kind of hit a difficulty apex at some point, and it 'clicks' and the game feels like it becomes drastically easier, in my experience at least. Even this far I still come across a gun or two I haven't seen yet, I'm not quite sure how the progression works in this game (I know the end game is basically looping), I don't really understand the secrets too much, I think I have experienced 3-4 off portals. So, to kind of give the hot and cold of it, is the game is actually pretty fun once you get over the base hurdles, and cross into the intermediate range, where you can actually carry your runs with what you pick up, rather than struggling to survive on the most overpowered weapons. Once you understand the perks, which feel like they give a good weight of modification to each run, it does get a little more flowing. The music is fun enough, and the feeling of the weapons even the base revolver are fun to shred enemies with. The problem is on the other side, where the game, from what I can see this far, justifies itself by being "hard". There doesn't seem to be any real long term Isaac style runs, where you build up ridiculous synergy. It doesn't really have the long term progression it seems, no long list of unlocks, or alternate routes, even the perks are seemingly limited to about 20 or so. Granted some of these come in DLC form over the years in other games, but even in the base games $12 is a little on the high side, for what you get. I mean to put it another way, I spent about 8 solid hours in the beginning, with a 16 bit game, where I could only play about 5-6 levels, with the same enemies every time, same map layouts (they are pretty generic). It felt very repetitive.. So while I have come to enjoy the game now, the price is steep for what you get, at least what I've seen, but a kind of lukewarm recommend.
Extremely fun and quick runs but its tuff to beat !@ Have had this game for years and still haven't beaten it.
This is one of my favourite games of all time. I do not understand why but this game holds up stronger than any rougelike in existence. It has a very cool aesthetic with highly rewarding and intense gameplay. There is so much to do in this game that it would very easily be my desert island video game. Definitely pick up this game and I promise with some time this game will have you hooked.
I take a lot of inspiration from this game as I'm in love with pretty much every aspect of the game. Visual style is silly and easy to perceive, pacing is fast and it won't let you get bored, rouge-like aspects are quite pleasant too. You should totally play it if you're a fan of those easy-to-understand-hard-to-master kind of games.
An extremely solid roguelite. Can be incredibly punishing to new players
Es y siempre será un juegazo. Llevo jugando este juego desde mucho tiempo entre pirata, Epic games y ahora que me lo compré.
320x240 resolution, less than 30 fps per second, and an absolute perfect game. The lore, the mechanics, the intensity, the loop system. A truly masterpiece
Nuclear Throne is the chaotic lovechild of pixel art and pure, unfiltered mayhem. It throws you into a wasteland filled with freakish mutants, endless bullets, and explosions that could give Michael Bay a run for his money. The controls are snappy, the weapons are as ridiculous as they are fun (a gun that shoots other guns? Yes, please), and every run is a rollercoaster of carnage and near-death moments. Sure, the game is brutally difficult—expect to die a lot—but somehow, it’s all part of the charm. Every time you bite the dust, you’re back for more, hungry to see if this time you can actually become the ruler of the wasteland. Spoiler alert: you won’t.
What makes Nuclear Throne stand out is its ability to make chaos feel like an art form. You’ll be screaming at the screen one second and laughing at a mutant wielding a fish bazooka the next. The game rewards creativity, adaptability, and sheer determination—or, at the very least, a stubborn refusal to quit. It’s rogue-like madness at its finest, with vibrant visuals and a killer soundtrack to keep you grooving while you dodge radioactive scorpions. Whether you’re in it for the fast-paced action or just to see how far you can get without screaming, Nuclear Throne is an absolute blast—pun very much intended.
Prepare for your runs to be ruined by enemies you cant see because of a horribly implemented darkness mechanic. Its always annoying no matter what, losing because of random chance rather than losing because you could have played better
This is like gungeon for psycho. The art is unhinged and the gameplay is worse (in a good way). If you are on a fence, go with gungeon first. This is for the "big kids"
Me when tryna find another roguelike after 100% TBOI.
And then getting mad at harder roguelikes like [Nuclear Throne].
Good game but too fast for my stupid little brain.
The largest frustration I have with this game is there are absolutely zero i-frames at any point. If you're in one of the many wrong places at the wrong time and you catch multiple bullets within a split sec of each other, you're dead.
If this game were $5 I think it'd be a solid buy but in my personal opinion the game isn't worth $12.
Simple, effective, and addictively fun. Perfect for quick sessions, especially due to how brutally difficult it is. The cool mechanics and tons of unlockables make the game enjoyable on longer time spans, as you feel a sense of progression through the many possible unlocks.
Easy to learn, but difficult to master. The level progression feels nice and tight and sessions go by in a flash, keeping the adrenaline pumping. Not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best games I've ever played.
Nuclear Throne is considered a classic game in the roguelike genre, and for good reason. Not only is game-play quick, satisfying, and easy to jump into as soon as you start the game, but the world, art style, characters and soundtrack all emanate a charisma that screams post-apocalypse. I heavily recommend the game to anyone interested in roguelikes!
This is one of the best Rogulites I have ever played. The difficulty is engaging, the upgrades are fun and balanced, and all the characters are fun and balanced.
Eat your heart out, Enter The Gungeon; the TRUE king of twin-stick roguelite rage-fests still sits proudly upon it's (Nuclear) throne
After 72 hours of gameplay, I have finally 50%ed achivements, and unlocked all characters. This game is very hard, yet very rewarding, fast paced runs make it godly.
rage games are alive and well in 2024
there is no fairness to this, there is no grace. Only mayhem, tears and soured-joy.
I love this game it so original and really hard theres also so much to do like play with friends unlock skins see how far you can get also another thing the mod nuclear throne ultra is so good I recommend this rouge like for sure.
Such a classic arcadey shooter, even after playing so much of it I come back to it all the time to get in a run or two when I feel like I need a quick jolt of adrenaline to get energized. It really never gets old.
Nuclear Throne is possibly the best twin stick shooter I've ever played.
The action is satisfying and fast-paced, the weapons and different mutant characters allow for different gameplay styles and it's just a lot of fun. I judge other top down shooters using Nuclear Throne as a starting point, and you should, too. Play it.
This game is a real dopamine rush. The action is manic, runs are short, it's hard but fair, all hallmarks of a good rogue-like. Story is non existent and art can't keep up with the Gungeon series and Voidigo, but the short run times in the game are designed for pick up and play, and it's one I often come back and do.
Extremely fun and challenging game, if you like fast paced crazy levels, this is the game for you
I know that there's still tons more to do, but I can't bring myself to try for any of it because of how absolutely punishing the game is. When every third run ends to something that feels patently unfair, it kills my motivation to attempt the harder unlocks as they're incredibly difficult even without having to deal with every form of insta-death under the sun. It's not like I'm shit at this genre, either, Enter the Gungeon is one of my all-time favorites and I've killed the Resourceful Rat a few times in my day thank you very much.
I still recommend this game because I really enjoyed most of my ~25 hours with it, but I also recommend that those with short tempers steer well clear. I've just gotten over my terrible habit of raging at videogames but this one almost had me screaming and flipping chairs like a dipshit teenager. Probably less enraging with co-op, I dunno.
This game is mad hard, which is fine and all, but there's not a real sense of accomplishment to keep you playing. I feel as though the insane difficulty exists simply to hide how shallow of a game it is. The power ups don't feel at all impactful enough to help you on your runs. There's not enough kit variety. It's addicting, sure, but it's totally not fun being sometimes completely helpless against giant swarm of enemies that the game just randomly decides you have to fight. Sometimes you'll have a decent kit, then spawn in a level and have no chance for a reaction before you die. That happens wayyyy to often. It's as though the game is designed to give you no chance sometimes just to reset you run.
Nostalgic... kinda like overly-sugary gum with fast-fading flavors.
Brilliant Twin Stick shooter, keep playing - keep getting KILLED!!!
worth full price honestly its genuinely a fun game with lots of fun characters to play as
i love it when i finally kill big dog and get busted mutations and weapons only to die to my very own bazooka
I've played this before and it's still as fun as it was then. One of the absolute best action roguelikes there is out there with tons of secrets, options, weapons, and tons of fun. Very highly recommended.
Hunter can suck on my nuclear balls!
superb and brutal pure carnage
I played this game way before thanks to my brother and I fell in love with it, totally recommend it if you like rogue-likes, good music, or characters with a lot of personality
This is the holy grail of roguelike twin stick shooters, it shines in simplicity along with a merciless challenge that borrows deep from excellent Arcade game design. Don't wait for a sale, it's worth every penny.
And just a heads up for a higher frame rate and gamepad users, use the open beta 64 (2023) branch of the game for 60 / 120 fps bc the base game is locked at 30 fps, there's also 16:9 aspect ratio support under this beta if you feel like playing it that way bc the game was originally designed on a 4:3 screen. If you're using a gamepad I'd recommend sticking with the openbeta 2021 just for the 60 fps gameplay bc there's an annoying bug in the 2023 beta branch that turns off the gamepad input when you die in a run and come back to the main menu.
This game is tight, easy recommendation, have fun dying and improving 👍
Very ADHD game. Luv it.
very good game but causes emotional damage after trying to acquire meltings B skin
A timeless classic, if you like rougelikes, this is one you should have playes.
Nothing gets my blood pumping like Nuclear Throne does except maybe Katana ZERO. It's my go-to adrenaline game, definitely give it a shot.
Ä TH' LN'IM hunter he s a fucking bitch SHI'KO Y'Ä rest I'NO Y'Ä game FL VE' Y'Ö has alot I'NO things IL FL any ways Ä gonna go fucking E VE'Ä ISUM SH LN'IM hunting coward fuck Ö LN'IM hunter!!!!!
10/10
good but hard
Unfortunately at this point in time this game's flaws are extremely apparent. The game is locked to 4:3 and 30fps unless you opt for a beta build (from 2023) in order to play widescreen and at over 60fps. The upgrades range from somewhat helpful if you even notice them working to down right useless. The teleporting door at the end of the stages can spawn directly under you automatically advancing you to the next stage even if you weren't ready and can potentially damage you if surrounded by hazards. The maps are too basic and claustrophobic and enemies take full advantage of this opting to shoot around corners and target the player from off the screen. I don't feel like this game is really worth the full price anymore, maybe at one point but not now. There are better more polished roguelikes that are more worthy of your time and energy.
still good after all these years. a roguelike you can just drop into for 20 mins and have a great time dying
if you like enter the gungeon then you're probably gonna like this
After 95 hours, I could spend a lot of time writing a long review about how great this game is, but instead I'll settle for just saying "there's nothing like it."
Now if you excuse me, I have to get back to playing more of it.
I always had a dream about game like this. And this is not a dream now...
- Nice artstyle
- unique generations system
- cool music ( sounds too btw )
Love it
Almost a ton of fun. I've played many rogue top down shooters but I guess I just suck at this game specifically.
I really love Nuclear Throne. To this day I still play it regularly. There are many games in this genre, but I still come back to the gold old reliable. Nuclear Throne offers tons of characters to play with, each of them give you a very different playstyle experience, same thing is with the weapons. The game is complete, yet it feels that there are parts, which maybe need some fine tuning, but this won’t happen.
