My Honest Review:
The game is very "Luck Based." That's what makes it fun. It's a very fun game to play when you're bored. The game is VERY easy to learn and does not take up much space. The one question is: Is it worth $15. In my opinion, yes. The lore is amazing too!
A 10/10 game. Absolutely recommend.
This game is basically everything you could ever want from a dungeon crawler. It has literally hundreds upon hundreds of guns, items, and enemies to discover, not to mention the countless amount of secret floors, bosses, guns, enemies, etc.
This game is quite literally the dream for someone who loves dungeon crawlers. You have ZERO reason to not buy this game if you are looking for a dungeon crawler.
With that being said, the game is insanely difficult, and definitely requires practice, but it's worth the time and patience. It's infuriating at times, but very, very fun, and absolutely worth your money.
Its ok, not a huge fan of rougelikes where you only dungeon run, but if you like that this is the best one
Bought this for local coop (Steam Couch Co-Op Fest) but the implementation is very poor. Despite selecting KBM for P1 it will force to default (Controller for P1) anyways. Also P2 is fixed to one character only; you cannot play anything other than the cultist character. Interacting with tutorial guard also does nothing when in coop
maybe the most fun rougelike i've played so far. it can be hard at first, especially if you forget about some of the controls. But you can get the hang of it after a few runs
there is a bit of luck to it i think though on the first floor, in regards to getting the right stuff. But aside from that it feels pretty fair
Was never able to ace Winchester's game, then when I finally got the hang of it, dude never spawned -10/10
Top 5 roguelikes. Great progression, lots of content, nice soundtrack, feels very polished, no bugs, great balancing and lots of build variety.
Enter the Gungeon is a good bullet hell, and it's a very good roguelike. If you want a difficult yet addicting experience that keeps you coming back for more, this is the game. I found that it has a very steep learning curve, but once you get through that curve you'll do great.
Summary:
Enter the Gungeon is my favorite roguelike of all time (and I have played most). I finished it on switch and I enjoyed it even more double-dipping on PC, where I finally completed the true ending. If you aren't a fan of rogue likes or incredibly demanding, difficult games I am unsure if I can change your mind. But, if you enjoy the genre or difficult games in general you will find fun and snappy gameplay, huge variety, and addictive replayability
Pros:
-Fun responsive gameplay. Every loss feels fair and you learn with each run
-Nice pixel graphics that are still readable when a lot is going on the screen
-Huge variety, each run is different whether it's guns, items, bosses, enemies etc
-Tons of secrets to uncover
-Fun unlockable characters that significantly change gameplay
-Many references to other IPs
-Great on deck
-Solid music and strong sound effects
-Fun to run through in co-op
Cons:
-May be too hard for some. Has a steep learning curve
-Level variety isn't amazing, most are variations of dungeons
-Certain floor bosses are much more difficult than others, and can negatively influence a run (Ammoconda on floor 2)
-Progression is somewhat slow, especially if you aren't good
-Enemies on later floors start to feel like bullet sponges and aren't as fun to fight, especially in bullet hell
If you're into roguelikes or bullet hell typo games this game uses both genres, it's difficult coz you may think some mechanics are essential like dodge rolling but in fact that's just a save for specific situations.
What I really like about this is the constant evolving of your playstyle bc the further you go the more you need to learn new mechanics but just by yourself, the game doesn't tell you anything which is great bc you learn from your mistakes something that I really like when playing games like this.
This game is a masterpiece. It is quite possibly one of the hardest games ive ever played. I started playing this game back in 2021 and have played it on and off before finally beating it just now. No other game upon completing it has made me want to leave a review like this game. If you have the time and the patience, it is more than worth it. This game has made me rage like no other and I have alt F4'd after so many fucking deaths. But at the end of the day its worth it all.
this is one of if not my favorite game. you may feel like you may never fully complete it but i just say that you could keep going forever. the synergies and combos are (mostly) well balanced and thought out. anyways this is a critically underrated game that i love.
extremly hard but its easy and it forces you to be good at games
The core gameplay of this game has promise but after multiple attempts to get back into finishing this, I can't quite enjoy it. There's a lack of depth to the roguelike elements and it leaves you feeling annoyingly underwhelmed and constantly limited by the tools given to you.
It's not my type of roguelike, but it could probably be yours.
One of the best game concepts out there. It offers really good flow of gameplay, character design, and most of all, art style. It is really fun and is really good in making every run unique.
Got it on sale, lots of fun solo and with a friend. Fair warning: its local co-op only, and max players is two.
AWESOME game!! One of the best STEAM games I have I would say!
CRAZY addictive!! You can put HOURS in this game and have the best runs or have the worst.
TONS of guns and tons of great gameplay!
Don't play this game if you like Rouge-like/Bullet Hell games. It will ruin your experience for all the rest on them. Why? Because its the best game created!, and the rest can't come close to it. The creativity of this game is top tier, to the puns, weapon design/lore, to mechanics and map design. Don't play this until you run out of other games to play! PS Definitely get this game :)
Super high skill ceiling. Love the graphic and variety of guns items and random map.
I adore this game. I wouldn't say it's perfect but the gameplay loop is so fun and addicting. This was my first roguelike that got me into the genre. Absolutely recommend.
9/10
This game has quickly become not just one of my favorite rouge-likes ever, but one of my favorite games ever. This game has so much content to explore and many secret little easter eggs to discover. If you have the money, I heavily suggest you buy this game.
good game with overall amazing gameplay looping
the spaghetti code on the hand, tasty
too repetitive, you die, you replay the level. repeat. the difficulty feels rather unfair than a skill issue or maybe I'm just too old for this
pros: catchy gameplay and aesthetics, but save your time (and sanity) for something else.
I might update my review if I give it another shot IDK yet
A great funny game with a lot of meat on the bone. I like the amount of content this game has. I've played it on my Switch previously and now I'm thinking about getting back to it on Steam Deck.
It's one of my favorite rouglikes ever. Core gunplay is extremely solid, and the replayability is near endless. Loads of clever pick ups, and extremely pretty art. Also, some fun references and puns.
i absolutely love this game so so much- for single player. But jesus fucking christ it isn't online co-op. or if it is, it is the most convoluted process ever. please please fix or rework this- WDYM I have to use steam remote play to *stream my friends monitor* or use a separate website/application. maybe we're just idiots but we were so excited to multiplayer this. if there's any way to effectively do online co-op please someone let me know- this was fucking awful to attempt to figure out. ABSOLUTELY love this game as a whole tho. genuinely love this game but oh my fucking god trying to play this with someone else was awful. love you guys:''')))))
It's a cool game, love the game. Tried playing co-op. Tf you mean I have to play through Steam Remote Play? The fuck is Parsex? Why is this called a co-op game? Even when we got it to work, we got a frame per 10 seconds at best. This is the most complicated co-op setup I've had to deal with and we couldn't get it to work. This is game is not co-op friendly, steam has lied to us. Otherwise, I think the game is pretty sick
The replayability alone is what makes this game a winner for me. I love the art style, the simple goal, and the expansive gameplay you can unlock throughout your journey. I really wish there were more games similar to this. One reason devolver studios will stay my favorite <3
Let's play, a good bagel. There is a lot of content, and progress is clear. Of course, if you take a break, it's extremely difficult to try again (I'll start a new game, because all the skills are gone, and somehow you need to finish off the achievements). And the wiki will help you, because there are mechanics of "synergy" of guns, passive and/or active items, which are many.
It goes like this:
"Oh nice it's a neat pixel game maybe I'll give it a try."
..... 1500 hours of gameplay later....
"This is the best game I played in my life!!!!! I need more!!!
..... Discovered Mods for the game.....
"I'm in gamer heaven now. This gaming experience will never be matched."
"Unless they make enter the gungeon 2..."
The game loop is surprisingly replayable. I expected this to be a short experience, but put many hours into it, even though I don't play many games anymore, nor did I much play bullet hell games before.
I enjoyed playing this game, blind for the most part, and for me, a lot of the unlocks and secrets are done very well, striking the really fine line between obvious and obscure. Just enough to make it exciting for me to discover what something does. And due to the nature of the game, you typically don't even get to see what your newly unlocked thing does, because you need to first get it as a random drop. This very delayed gratification would be annoying, but the game makes up for it with interesting story elements, and a nice depth of mechanics to hone continually.
In the end, I did end up looking up how to unlock the last 3 characters, and two secret floors, because I couldn't figure it out. For some, I had encountered clues, but very early on in my playthrough (amidst a ton of new things), so I ended up forgetting about them. For others, they were just way too obscure to ever figure out by reason or by chance.
I have a mixed relationship to the rainbow mode, which I unlocked very early on. It makes the game way easier, especially if you unlock it early, where the loot table is limited because you haven't unlocked much yet. I also think some items are just poorly balanced, making the game trivial. I suspect this is due to the many years of updates to the game, where later additions were not playtested against completely new players much. I think removing those items from the rainbow mode would be a great improvement.
By this point, the hours of gameplay I put in are already a straightforward recommendation. But I'll end with a rant about the super lategame stuff.
The very lategame is not so enjoyable anymore, because the main game loop becomes meaningless. I often found myself in situations where by all conventional accounts, I was having a really good run, but it was pointless to progress further or get to the end. I think ideally, a player does not beat the final boss as fast as I did (because I used rainbow mode and unbalanced items, not because I'm good), in which case they would keep unlocking things on the side. But for me, the main game loop became pointless, and it seems like I have no more enjoyment in truly finishing the game (obtaining the "Finished gun"). But I did get the full story at least. I'm also not really sure how I would even unlock the last few things, because I'm still not that good at dodging bullets (I'm playing with a keyboard, maybe a controller would make this easier), nor does the game allow you to use rainbow mode, nor do you even have much opportunity to get a good build going. Theoretically, I would probably use rainbow mode to get to the secret boss, throw away all my good stuff, and die over and over again to the boss, probably 50 times, until I figure out how to beat it consistently. Then go in with a regular run, beat it, and get the last unlocks. But that would just be no fun at all for me. Way too much pointless grinding for only a few minutes of actual practice at the relevant fight. So this is where it ends for me. Or I could look up guide videos, but I wouldn't enjoy that either.
I will also say that I did not discover some mechanics on my own at all, which would have helped me quite a bit in the earlier game, had I known them. It's amazing if you blindly figure out some obscure thing, but this is just the flipside, where you end up playing through the whole game without ever knowing about some little boons along the way.
It is also not encouraging to have unlocked all the meme/joke unlocks now, which are just permanently in the loot table now, making the game significantly harder now.
I know this game will never get any more updates, but it would have been nice to
1. get some hints, or anything with a sliver of usefulness, for beating the game when there would otherwise be no point
2. remove some unbalanced items from rainbow mode
3. allow manually disabling bad/joke items after having unlocked them.
I will say though that the amount of polish is way above and beyond what you will find in an average game. You can't even call it polish anymore, it's just many patches of additional content, all included in the base game. This game has music, art, bosses, weapons, entire floors, that most people will never even see. That's a lot of love put into things that less than 10% of players will see, and I believe that's exactly why this game kept me playing for so long.
i played this game for 100+ hours on console and it is as good, even better on my computer. it plays great even with my potato PC. would not recommend if you do not want to put in hundreds of attempts, but if you like to do that then this is absolutely the game for you
(game good, you should play)
Amazing experience... really addicting once you get good. Just pick it up and ENTER THE GUNGEON
It goes without saying that, where the vast library of indies is concerned, Enter The Gungeon is easily a contender for one of the best out there on the Steam store in terms of what it sets out to accomplish as a deep and challenging roguelite with a unique flavor of 'bullet hell' to stand out from the crowd that has very much saturated the market and demand for these types of games.
Though any game that is simply 'good' at what it does would be wholly underselling the sheer creativity and attention to detail put into crafting this game's world, it's many colourful characters and, above all else, the insane amount of guns and gun-like items on offer for the player to have fun with! Seeing as each run will start you off with just your starting pistol as well as any other small perks that each of the four playable 'gungeoneers' (plus several other secret characters that can be unlocked through specific means) have, which helps to encourage those to experiment with which ones align with their own playstyle.
However, to get right into what Enter The Gungeon is all about, you are tasked with exploring five increasingly challenging chambers (with a special 'sixth chamber' for those who want to truly push themselves and go beyond the 'vanilla' experience) as you go through about roughly twenty or so rooms in each chamber, with every room either being filled with random enemies that are hellbent on bringing you down, a store vendor that lets you make use of this game's currency in the form of 'shells' or a treasure chest that varies in size and elegance depending on it's quality that requires a key to unlock alongside the typical 'boss room' where the chamber's big bad lays in wait for you to take on.
Bearing in mind, this isn't even touching upon the many other little special rooms that one may encounter along the way that aren't a part of the standard chamber layout, whether this be one of a dozen or so shrines that the player can pray for various benefits (usually with a 'caveat' in the form of a loss of a heart/gun or some challenge to overcome first) or different minigames that the player can choose to participate in via payment of shells for potential awards, sometimes being absolute trash if they play terribly or being a genuinely super powerful item or gun if they perfect it!
One thing to address in particular that some may have a serious gripe with is how Enter The Gungeon starts off especially harsh to new players, not just in the sense that it's a challenging roguelite where you need to learn the many enemies and how to adapt to each of their patterns (especially when combined with other foes with complex attack patterns!) but also adapting to runs where you have great items but stuck with the starting pistol or a superb gun but having no luck with any decent items.
This problem is especially apparent when you first begin the game as most of what is unlocked at the start is not that great compared to 85-90% of the items you'll be unlocking later when you have enough 'Hegemony Credits' earned by killing bosses to spend on items that can be bought outside at the Breach to have them potentially spawn in the chambers below. Noting that the Breach itself will be quite sparse at first until you start picking up Cell Keys from bosses (or, on the rare chance, a powerful enemy) to unlock specific cells in the chambers during certain runs where you can free these NPCs for use either on the Breach to buy more items and unlock certain challenge modes or those who remain below in the chambers who offer their own items, albeit often with a twist of the sorts!
Seeing as there is a lot on offer as far as traditional roguelites go, Enter The Gungeon will prove to be a fun game for those who can stick at it, even if it is one that seems overwhelming to start off with. Since I will admit to having tried this fun indie back in 2021 on the PlayStation 4, having to give a good 12-13 shots JUST to reach the Fifth chamber and another several more before eventually getting my first 'run' completed. (Sadly I didn't get too much further in, no 'Sixth Chamber' unlocked nor did I try out most of the challenge modes) Meanwhile it only took me three runs to get to the Fifth chamber and cleared my first full run the very next attempt when making my return to the Gungeon here on PC!
This is to say that, once you've learnt how to play Enter The Gungeon, it comes back to you quite easily and, with some patience and willingness to learn, anyone can become decent at this roguelite once they know what to expect as this bullet hell roguelite doesn't give you any power-ups or little perks to help you start off better at the very beginning of each run. Rather, by playing each run and unlocking more unique and potent weapons/items, you not only become better by learning to dodge bullets better and become more adapt to the many firearms and abilities that items offer out there but improve by the selection of said guns and items becoming better the more you unlock as you progress further down the Gungeon.
Though it won't be for everyone, there is something quite satisfying about completing a run of the Gungeon, whether it be by just barely getting by and pulling through to the end in a struggle to defeat the big boss at the end of the Fifth chamber or a purely glorious playthrough where you get all manners of great items that synergize together (another fun mechanic where certain weapons/items become stronger when in your inventory together) and you nail each boss perfectly as a result, ending up with having a solid shot at the true 'end-game' via some of the secret bosses in their own areas inbetween the chambers or the dreaded Sixth Chamber itself if you have that already unlocked!
Honestly, given the sheer coverage of this game, it wouldn't surprise me if my review does not change many minds of those who have either played it for themselves or have already heard of this impressive indie by Dodge Roll. (Indeed, naming their studio after a most critical gameplay mechanic in their big hit game is quite something, albeit the success is well-deserved on their part!) But for what it's worth, Enter The Gungeon still holds up surprisingly well here in 2025 and, despite it being nearly six whole years since the final update, I can confidently say that this is one indie that any respectable Steam gamer that cherishes their indies should at least have a look at to see if they have what it takes to beat the Gungeon and, more importantly, to kill their past!
TLDR Version:
• A fascinating roguelite that fully makes use of various 'bullet hell' mechanics in it's challenging gameplay (+)
• Lovingly crafted world where anything and everything has some relation to guns, ammo or explosive set in our real life or the fiction of many other games' universes (+)
• Five chambers consisting of increasingly difficult randomly-generated rooms, with a Sixth chamber and multiple secret areas to unlock for those eager for the extra challenge (+)
• Over five hundred different guns and items, each one unique and offering something new to the player for each run through the Gungeon (+)
• Multiple different game modes that can be unlocked on top of special rooms in the Gungeon that offer optional events or minigames for players to take on and potentially be rewarded well for skilled effort (+)
• The 'bullet hell' roguelite can be overwhelming for those not used to either genre and may prove too much for some casual gamers (-)
• Starting off Enter The Gungeon can be quite slow and possibly frustrating, given the poor selection of mostly subpar or gimmicky weapons/items at the start where nothing else is unlocked (-)
• No perks or stats to improve for a better start to each run in future attempts, which will likely put off those wanting an extra aid as they progress (-)
Replayability, fun runs, challenging, and all the kinds of bullets you can possibly imagine
This game is great! Some achievements are annoying due the hard grind. A masterpiece of the genre!
Difficulty: hard
100 % achievement difficulty: hard - very hard
Graphics: beautiful pixel art
Music: great
A great dungeon-crawler with tons of cool, interesting, and downright goofy guns. Lots of replayability.
Game absolutely sucks
>boot up game
>get to first boss
>smileyandshades.png
>stupid happy fucker summons some buddies by singing
>kill that stupid smiling yellow fuck
>sunglasses gets upset and forces his brass phallus up my anus
>give him more lead than a mcdonald's garfield mug
>he calls me gay before he explodes
>look at reward pedestal
>the. fucking. KLOBBE
>i begin swinging my arms like a feral oragutan
>strike my pc
>the screen goes dark
>the lich appears and tells me that i'm not allowed in agartha anymore
>get sent to bullet hell
>get molested by poop slimes repeatedly
Thought I was good, turned on turbo mode, died on stage 1 over and over :(
A good game, with the perfect difficulty, but with a few bugs that could make the game become harder, the rarity of some events make you, play and play and play, until you get it and go to google and ask if anyone saw something similar and then you see the "perfect run" that you got, also the lich is broken. but for a casual play you've to get this an if a friend got it give a try is pretty funny.
Before rouglikes became oversaturated, there was, the gungeon
So many guns and just as many secrets. Aside from the co-op being a little meh, Gungeon is great
Extremely fun. It does involve the basic "Binding of Isaac" roguelike formula but makes so many unique changes to it while still keeping the difficulty feeling fair and balanced. The weapon variety is good and each of the characters feels unique. Still hate the rat character that takes my stuff.
one of the best roguelikes i've ever tried, although really lacks proper functional multiplayer.
100+ hours and i still haven't completed game even once and lots of content ahead!
Gun. Pew pew. Seriously though, while it takes a solid amount of hours to actually get the game down, it is so worth it, as the lore is so good and some of the little bits can send chills down my spine. 10/10 would recommend to hardcore gamers.
Classic Bullet Hell shooter with a lot of gun puns. The game is more skill-based than a lot of roguelikes on the market (BoI comes to mind), as the game actively works to not allow you to surf on OP items and instead rewards you with the good stuff only with no-hit boss victories. Late-game can be a bit of a slog due to the obtuse design of constructing the Bullet and the difficulty of 6th Chamber, but again, that's more down to skill.
The game is fun if you start a rainbow run with any characters you can customize and do whatever you want with enough skill. However, without that its %100 RNG and you either have reflexes enough to do what is necessary without getting or tired you start again and again and again and againt till its dawn.
Some say Binding Of Isaac is the best top-down roguelite, but I'm saying this is the best. The controls are tight and satisfying, the gun and character variety is amazing and the gun theming might appear at first glance to be lame and reddit, but the fact that it's so all-encompassing and used at every opportunity makes it work even if it shouldn't. Absolute recommend.
Probably one of the best games ive played while being alive. I always keep coming back to this game, first played on epic games but its so good i had to also get it on steam. 100% recommend this game. The bos and enemy design is extremly good and really rewarding. getting to chamber 5 and completing the game for the first time i will always remeber. Truly a masterpiece.
Fun, addictive and challenging
Easy to learn, but hard to master.
Watching a trailer for 30 seconds tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the game. What you see is what you get. Controls are straight forward and easy to learn, enemies are varied and their mechanics can be grasped quickly after engaging them once or twice.
This is a perfect game for the Steam Deck or people looking for a quick gaming session in-between IRL obligations.
I have some minor annoyances with items and guns not always being clearly explained.
Also, having to start from the beginning after each death can be demoralising.
