Childhood classic. Cute. Controls are annoying. Good way to spend a few days while listening to an audiobook
I bought it a while ago, but only recently started playing.
After the tutorial, I can't save; the function doesn't work for me.
Loved 95% this game, but the sequel is better.
They ironed out the issues & have more level variety.
I mostly played it to re-see how everything started.
Drunk King is best King!
Katamari is one of a kind. I don't think I've ever been able to so thoroughly recommend a game that I prefer to play in small doses.
Pros:
* Great concept; it's immediately intuitive and fun
* God-tier soundtrack
* So much quirky charm
Cons:
* Horrible, counterintuitive controls that heavily detract from the experience for the first couple hours. I understand that the controls are part of the learning curve, but I wish I could control the movement direction with left stick and the camera with right stick like any other game, even if they needed to shorten the time limits to compensate. "Rolling a katamari is very hard. Right, Prince? Wasn't it hard? Wasn't it?"
* $30 for a 21-year-old game comes off as pretty greedy, especially given the lack of polish on the remaster: 30 FPS, alt + tabbing while in full-screen mode leaves thick letterboxes around the game window, the mouse isn't hidden in borderless mode or when using a controller, etc. I would recommend buying on sale.
best game ever made btw
As an oppressed class, it is imperative that I destroy this city to feed my starving family.
didn't play it as a kid, saw a YouTuber reference it a lot and decided to give it a try. boy I have been missing out my entire earthly life. play this game. I don't think its worth the high price so get it on sale, maybe for like 20$.
made me wanna rip my teeth out at times but it was hilarious and fun. played with a controller and it felt a lot better than keyboard controls woulda. also gotta love it when a game has a big index of collectible items you can look at.
this game will wreck your controller
Katamari Damacy is easily one of my favorite games of all time! The cutesy story, charming characters, combined with unique and addictive gameplay really make this title special. The gameplay is incredibly satisfying and scratches an itch that no other game seems to be able to. Snowballing items to reach crazy sizes is unlike anything on the market. Racing the timer to barely complete the level is Cathartic. Crushing the level and reaching maximum size is pure bliss. All the while you're accompanied with what I argue to be the best soundtrack in all of gaming history. The Whimsical story of the game is humorous and special throughout. I absolutely love the perspective of the family on earth as well as all the fun dialog from The King of All Cosmos. Roll it all up with a final level that has such an emotional song really cements a feeling of closure and an end to the journey. The entire thing is a recipe for perfection and I have played this game so many times from start to finish over many years. No matter how many times I play it, each and every time it is the same special game I know and love. This is truly a timeless experience and if you haven't had the luxury of experiencing it I encourage you to stop putting it on the bench and give it a play. You won't be disappointed!
Quite possibly one of the wackiest PS2 games I missed out on
And boy am I glad I've gotten to play this remaster. This game is a weird and wonderful game at the same time. The gameplay loop is simple on paper, you roll a sticky ball around a map collecting all anything and everything. And I mean EVERYTHING, as long as your katamari is big enough. You do that within a specific time limit and a specific size goal. It's pretty much the same across all levels which I expected to get boring pretty fast but it was the opposite actually. I was hooked! There is something so oddly satisfying about the whole gameplay loop and I wish I could explain it better but it's just so good. The controls are a pain to get used to but once you get the hang of things and create your first monstrosity of a katamari, things will just start snowballing from there.
But surprisingly, that's not all. The stars of this game in my opinion are the head bopping, infectiously catchy and unmatched in vibes level soundtrack. The music in the first stage alone is like a fevver dream ringing in your ears if that makes sense lol. And it just keeps getting better from there. The other star of this game is none other than the "King of All Cosmos" who is pretty much the catalyst for the story taking place. As per the story, after a wild night out, the King pretty much destroys all the stars in the galaxy and then tasks you, the prince to roll up stuff with the katamari so that he can replace them with it. Why? No clue. Like any loving father, he will have incredibly high standards and dish out disappointment in fluent record scratches if they aren't met and shower you with high praises when they are. And every bit of dialogue is so hilarious to go through. I haven't even mentioned the incredible design of the King in all his absurd drip.
So yeah, that's Katamari Danmacy in a nutshell. Weird, charming, incredible tunes, immaculate vibes, hilarious dialogue and a good freaking time! Definitely recommended.
I love this game. It's goofy, surreal, and satisfying once you get the hang of it. You be rollin' for your space dad or whatever. Definitely a cult classic.
The premise is quite simple:
The King of the Cosmos went on a bender and wiped all the stars in the sky out.
No more stars, only boring darkness.
It is up to you, O Prince, to restore the sky's brilliance by creating new stars ... out of ordinary objects found on Earth.
Sounds silly, right? - But that is the way it is done, apparently.
Roll your ball over objects to pick them up.
The more objects you pick up, the larger the finished star will be.
OF course, there are the King's orders to follow, and it is he who decides exactly how large each star must be.
Avoid running into objects larger than your ball of objects is at any given time, because collisions will send your objects flying, thus decreasing the size of the finished star.
Pro Tip: Try to make the ball of objects uniform as odd bits sticking out will affect the way the ball rolls.
The more even the ball, the easier it is to navigate.
... And that's about all I have to say except I recommend using a controller for this game.
Happy Rolling~!
Truly just a perfect short game. Vibes, gameplay, music. All immaculate.
Tons of simple stupid fun
Me like big balls
What a joy of a game! Felt very happy while playing this.
Roll ball -> ball gets bigger!
Very much enjoyed this simple game, short and straight to the point :)
easily the best game I've ever played in my entire 1,000 year existence on this Earth.
Stylistically sure its a masterpiece, but the GAMEPLAY IS AMAZING
AND THE MUSIC IS AMAZING
Its both fun and funny.
Get it during a sale.
**The Charm and Ingenuity of *Katamari Damacy***
*Katamari Damacy*, released in 2004 by Namco, stands as one of the most unique and captivating games in the world of video game design. At first glance, its quirky premise and colorful aesthetics may seem like mere oddities, but the game delivers an experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it one of the standout titles of its generation. Through its inventive gameplay mechanics, engaging music, and irresistible charm, *Katamari Damacy* proves to be a delightful masterpiece that transcends conventional gaming expectations.
### Unconventional Yet Addictive Gameplay
One of the most striking aspects of *Katamari Damacy* is its simple yet ingenious gameplay. Players control the Prince, a small, spherical character tasked with rolling a sticky ball—called a katamari—across various environments. As the katamari rolls, it collects anything it touches, from paperclips to trees to buildings. The goal is to gather enough objects to create a large enough katamari for the King of All Cosmos, the character’s eccentric and often unpredictable father, to turn it into a star.
This mechanic, though simple, is surprisingly addictive. The joy of seeing the katamari grow larger with each passing moment, as it accumulates more objects, creates a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. The challenge lies not only in finding and collecting the right items but also in maneuvering through increasingly complex environments. What could easily have been a repetitive task turns into a dynamic, skill-testing experience, thanks to a mix of puzzles, time limits, and the interplay between the environment and the growing katamari.
### Surreal Aesthetic and Humor
*Katamari Damacy* features a unique art style that combines vibrant colors with a surreal, almost dream-like quality. The characters, environments, and objects are designed in an abstract, cartoonish manner, making the game’s world feel both whimsical and bizarre. This aesthetic plays a key role in creating the game’s distinctive tone. The visual style evokes a sense of lightheartedness, which is perfectly matched by the game’s sense of humor. The King of All Cosmos, a character who is both regal and hilariously self-absorbed, provides much of the game’s charm through his absurd commentary and bizarre demands. His antics, combined with the peculiar narrative, create an atmosphere that encourages players to laugh while they play, deepening the sense of enjoyment.
Furthermore, the game's humor is evident in the way it approaches the concept of scale. The surreal nature of the objects you collect—ranging from household items to entire landscapes—creates a sense of playfulness and exaggeration that feels liberating. There are moments where the absurdity of the tasks becomes so exaggerated that it becomes part of the charm rather than a potential drawback.
### Memorable Music and Soundtrack
The music in *Katamari Damacy* is another standout feature that contributes to the game’s overall appeal. The soundtrack, composed by Yu Miyake, is as quirky and inventive as the game itself. Its eclectic mix of genres, from jazz to pop to traditional Japanese music, blends together in a way that is both unexpected and delightful. The cheerful and catchy tunes are infectious, and they quickly become synonymous with the joy of rolling the katamari. The game's use of music helps set the tone, building an atmosphere that is fun, energetic, and occasionally surreal.
Moreover, the sound effects in *Katamari Damacy* are perfectly matched to the gameplay, creating an immersive experience where every object collected is accompanied by satisfying sounds, making the act of gathering even more enjoyable. This attention to sound design adds another layer of depth to the overall experience.
### A Break from Conventional Gaming
What makes *Katamari Damacy* stand out is its willingness to break away from conventional gaming tropes. The game doesn’t focus on complex combat mechanics or elaborate narratives. Instead, it provides a fresh, innovative experience that encourages players to think outside the box. The concept of rolling up objects into a ball might sound simple, but the game’s clever design and exploration of this concept turn it into something much more profound.
The lack of typical violence or high-stakes tension is a breath of fresh air in a gaming landscape that often revolves around combat and conflict. Instead, *Katamari Damacy* offers players a chance to unwind and experience a joyful, meditative form of gameplay. It’s a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, allowing players to enjoy the process of creating something big out of seemingly insignificant pieces, which can be interpreted as a metaphor for creativity and personal growth.
### Lasting Impact and Legacy
Despite being a relatively niche title when it was first released, *Katamari Damacy* has left a lasting impact on the gaming community. Its unique gameplay mechanics and irreverent charm have inspired numerous sequels, spin-offs, and even fan-made content. Many of the game’s concepts, particularly its approach to scale and its focus on simplicity and fun, have influenced other titles in the puzzle and adventure genres. The game’s ability to balance creativity, humor, and innovation has made it a cult classic, adored by gamers around the world.
### Conclusion
In conclusion, *Katamari Damacy* is a shining example of how video games can be both innovative and entertaining. Its unique gameplay, memorable soundtrack, surreal humor, and imaginative design make it a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate players. By focusing on creativity and the joy of discovery, the game provides an experience that is not only fun but also uplifting. Whether you're rolling up tiny objects or colossal buildings, *Katamari Damacy* remains a testament to the power of whimsy and creativity in video games.
"A galaxies fate in the hands of a mad-God scorn on rolling matter into new matter to create new stars. Truly a masterpiece."
silly and joyous time rolling a ball collecting plants and fruits to make stars (its a splendid time), but by star 4 the horrors set in... but you must continue because you need to see just how big of a ball you can make...
10/10
the cow and bear levels make me want to eat rocks in a bad way
Fun game when you don't want think and just play and do.

what the fuck this is so peak! the earth really is full of things...
the Vibes are immaculate and the gameplay is surprisingly deep for "roll ball and make it really big", especially when going for 100%.
esse jogo é simplesmente o cúmulo do potencial criativo humano. não é só o melhor jogo, mas sim melhor peça de mídia já produzida pelo homem, e olhe lá.
Nourishes the soul.
You have to play for like 10 min before you can access the options menu for some reason, so you might be in windowed mode for a minute the first time you boot. Otherwise, I think this port is hitting all the right notes for me.
A delightful game that plays great on a Steam Deck.
I think the Controls for the keyboard just do not make sense, this is by far the worst game i played in the term of controls, maybe if i had a controller it will be a lot better
Katamari Damacy Reroll is a remake of a weird, wacky but wonderful game about rolling up items, watch your katamari get bigger and bigger and bigger
9/10
Fun. The presentation is off putting at first. I learnt to love it. The controls are unique to say the least. Just work with it.
The game is about rolling things up into a big ball. From small to big to colossal. Much better than an idle game, and more intriguing than games like Tasty Planet.
There is an issue with controller support. Just play through the tutorial on keyboard, the options are available afterwards. Only a few clicks to fix it. (Don't even think about playing keyboard the whole game.)
"Son, I want you to roll me up that shit that killed Tupac."
"Yes father."
fun distilled into its purest form, probably the best a singleplayer game will ever be.
one of the best games ever. short and sweet. simple topic made chaotic and fun. it presents itself in a non-chalant way that comes across as chaotic. its like hey guys roll that house haha anyways roll that big thing. art style is cute, minimalistic, and fits the theme of non-chalant mischief. 10/10
This would've been 10/10 if they actually retained the english dub, but its still a 9/10 remake of a 10/10 game
Lightning struck in the early 2000's when Namco happened upon a brilliant idea for a brand new video game series.
In Katamari Damcy, the player assumes the role of a tiny alien prince, who's main objective is to roll giant balls of items collected around the planet Earth. In the earlier stages, the player starts out rolling clusters of items found around the home. Pencils, flowers, food items, and other small trinkets that when rolled together, create the first few Katamari's. As levels progress, the challenges in Katamari Damcy continually increase, with objectives aimed at creating bigger Katamaris meant to engulf neighbourhoods, cities, and eventually ...continents themselves.
Gameplay-wise, players steer the Katamari ball using the left and right analog sticks. Not every item can be picked up immediately, requiring players to pace themselves strategically; starting off small and paying close attention as their Katamari increases in size. Players must also be mindful of the hazards in each level, such as humans, large animals and confined spaces which, when collided with, will send random pieces the player rolled up flying, thus shrinking their Katamari in size.
As players get the rhythm of rolling a Katamari down, the game becomes oddly satisfying. Strategically rolling a giant, structure around a level as it picks up speed and gobbles up everything in sight is oddly satisfying. At the time, there really was no other game that offered such a unique experience on any system.
The music and visual aesthetic in Katamari Damacy is boldly unabashed, with a large emphasis on Japanese culture.Tracks are upbeat and vary in style. Some contain a sing-along charm of modern Japanese pop, while traditional Jazz numbers traversing back and forth between English and Japanese lyrics add a sense of sophistication to Damacy's presentation. On the wackier side of things, tunes tinged with a tad of Electro are also present in Damacy's audio offerings.
The scaled-back graphics are part of Katamari's abstract charm with each level packed with an overabundance of wacky characters. Every corner in Damacy is sprinkled with randomly-inserted creatures, characters and comical items that make exploring each level all the more worthwhile.
Truly, the Katamari Reroll series on Steam is a collection of video games that should be experienced. A franchise so innovative that a copy of Katamari Damacy was added to the Museum of Modern Art based on the title's importance to game design.
Bought on a whim knowing nothing about the series, and I have never been more confused or had more fun. Truly the most odd yet delightful gaming experience I have had in a long time. Soundtrack consists of banger after banger, and somehow rolling stuff up never gets old. 10/10.
Runs great on the deck too!
cute fun wholesome and goated
good
It is fun, I have this on PS2. It is and can be very addicting, just rolling around and collecting items.
Silly game.. roll things into ball
This game is great.
its so f*cking sick. its my favourite game
Incredible game, hard to learn and harder to master so you really gotta pull those gamer socks up to get the most out of this. As others said it feels like wrestling with the controls, even after 50 hrs I still feel like a noob and I am okay with that. god tier music, great level design and use of visual comedy. If you got that collector perk in your autism skill tree then you will enjoy collecting the 1600+ items require for 100% achievement.
Faithful port of a timeless game. Strong recommend if you like rolling balls in a psychedelic setting.
Should be considered an essential game to try for people interested in the medium.
Part of the Museum of Modern Art's collection of games if that tells you anything about it's importance.
hands down this is one of the greatest video games ever made
