Really good special edition! I had played the original a number of times over the years, but it had been a long time when I loaded the special edition up. I had bought it quite a while back, but don't think I had actually played it through.
I loved the updated look, and the ability to switch to the original version on the fly is nice to see how the art style has been respected when they did this update.
If you like adventure games this is a absolute classic of the genre, and if you have never played an adventure game, I can't think of much of a better place to start than this updated version of one of the best games of the genre.
Brings back good memories.
One of the classics, a must for all Lucasarts fans out there.
Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game.

More than a decade and a half old the updated 2009 update to the 1990 classic is still worth checking out for adventure game players.
The absolute classic and arguably best point and click adventure game was not done justice with this half cooked remaster.
The updated soundtrack is great and it's good to see the cast from Curse come back and reprise their roles for the classic game in the series. Gameplay is very much the same. Where the remaster slips up is in the remastered character model designs and also, to a lesser extent, the environments. The characters and environments had such a charm and magic to them back in the day, the remaster style is very lifeless and bland in comparison. However, this remaster was released in 2009 so I can hardly expect modern day levels of detail here and i recall it being available on smart phones at the time which was pretty cool. I'm glad the ability to jump between old and new graphics is there but why is there not the option to play the old style graphics with the voices? Perhaps you can, I just didn't know how to activate it. This is just an old man rambling about the past, I don't think anyone new to the series will have a second thought about my issues with it. It is still a fantastic game.
Anyway, had a good time regardless revisiting this classic from my childhood with my own kid. He enjoyed it a ton. On to LeChucks Revenge..
Played this when i was younger and was still fantastic to replay again years later (female player). Good story, decent script. I love a good point and click and obscure puzzles. This version seemed more straight forward, but still got stuck a couple of times.
Cult classic beautifuly remastered. It let's you switch between old and new graphics mid game with only 1 key.
Interesting and challenging puzzles. Although sometimes it can be a bit hard to figure out what you are suposed to do next, so don'r be ashamed to look for a guide or use the help key. It still one of the most charming and funny games storywise and almost all dialogues are pure gold.
A fantastic game and one of the best point-and-clicks ever made! As someone who played the Telltale games in this series first, I was very excited to play the game that started it all and it did not disappoint! Humorous, engaging, fun, challenging, and that fantastic pirate-y world make for one of the best point-and-click games out there and an easy recommend.
An absolutely amazing start to one of the most stupidly hilarious point and click adventures out there.
Solid game-play, good story, amazing characters.
I love the ability to swap between the redone artwork and the original pixel art. Adore the rework but the pixel art is just so detailed and AAAUGH.
Anyways i love monkey island
My favourite game of all time in the 90s and it still is today.
Funny, clever and replayable over and over. I go back to this every year for the 3-4 hour journey on Melee Island and beyond.
Look behind you... A three headed monkey
good old game with great amount of all kind of puns.
fun reading and puzzle solving game
Fabulous, picked this up for next to nothing in the Steam sale - for old time's sake - I'd played it previously on my Amiga 1200 in the 90s (yes I'm old). It's still great fun, although it has been tidied up and modernised I'm sure. A great little trip down memory lane.
very good and fun and classic game do not let its age fool you
This game is the absolute worst offender for wasting your time with slow walking animations and NO fast travel. It's a shame, because the game's writing is quite charming and humorous, but I frequently knew what I was supposed to do yet the fact that simply getting to the location would take FOREVER is gravely unforgivable. It's unplayable. I could read an entire news article on my phone while moving from one area to the other.
If watching a character needlessly shuffle across multiple screens of the same rotation of mediocre art backdrops is also your pet peeve, save your sanity and don't buy this.
It's also not voiced in other languages like its sequel is. I played the French version and the translations sometimes deviate nonsensically in meaning from the English audio. I think classic point-and-click games can be a great tool for foreign language learning, but this one is poor value, so be warned.
Classic game that has held up over the years.
very good!
A great game full of funny moments and a great storyline.
"When there is only one candidate, there is only one choice!"
"The Secret of Monky Island" is the first game that started my interest in quest point and click games, at least I think so. When I was a kid, we didn't have a rimaster or great voice acting, so I was left to figure out on my own what the appearance of the characters were and what their funny voices were.
"Monky Island" remembered me with great characters, great dialog, sparkling level of jokes and gave me the confidence that if you want a discount from Stan the salesman - you need to ask three times, or better five, or maybe ten...Duuude, with this guy really need to be persistent. The absurdity of the humor and the situations in which the slightly awkward but insanely funny Guybrush Threepwood found himself left me completely enthralled! Going to the circus to participate in the preparation of a trick, wearing a pot on his head? Yeah, come on, we only live once! Find the girl of my dreams and rescue her from the clutches of the enemy, only to realize at the end that she can work out her own issues? Pfft, we love breaking clichés. That's why Monkey Island is such a great game!
I was thrilled with the game mechanics! Imagine you have a game for teens, a game quest to be exact, you have to come up with interesting battle mechanics. That doesn't sound like an easy task, does it? Ron Gilbert and Tim Scheife have solved it: What do kids love most? Lacking physical strength, they often try to figure out how to hurt their opponent in a fun way!
Therefore, the brave Guybrush wounds his opponent not with a sharp blade, but with a word. These are great quotes that I am sure I will tell my children, such as: How appropriate, you fight like a cow!
I'm kidding. This game really gave me a childhood and probably made me the person I am now, giving me a good dose of humor and interest in a franchise that grew me into a pirate-girl.
One of the best games ever.
The Secret of Monkey Island was yet another game that is heralded as an amazing game that can do no wrong. And once again, I come away completely disappointed and wondering what everyone else was playing. This game took me 8 hours to complete and that was with liberal use of the hint system. I don’t know how anyone could have played this game before the special edition put in a hint system. Just about everything you’re supposed to do is so convoluted and illogical that there is no way you would ever think of the next step on your own. You should not use your brain here, but rather the most idiotic thing you can think of.
I thought I knew where this story would go, that Guybrush would go through his pirate trials, become a pirate, join a crew, and eventually fight the great pirate LeChuck. Yeah… once you’re out of Part One: The Three Trials, which is by no means superb, the game quickly goes downhill. I mean, for heaven’s sake, part two is just creating a soup to pass out and end up on Monkey Island! And why did we have to save the mayor just for her to not be in any danger at all? How does your crew end up in Hell when I needed a head to give me broken directions? How does the mayor get the same ghost-killing spray when she was locked up on a ship the entire time and I was traversing an entire island having to do fetch quests before achieving my goal? This game must have inspired the entire genre of fetch quests games.
I must say that whoever created this special edition deserves to be smacked upside the head. Whereas the classic version had the action keys right on the screen where you have easy access to them, the SE puts them in separate screens that are near impossible to maneuver. It was far easier to switch to classic mode when you needed to do some quick work with the action keys. The absolute best example of this is when you have to transport a mug of grog across town and have to switch it between mugs before it disintegrates. It is impossible to do with the SE screens, I tried twice! I had to switch to classic to accomplish it. This just shows that there was no testing of this game.
At the end of the day all I can say is, at least I didn’t ‘pay more than $20 for this game’.
The best game ever!!!!
it took me 28 years to find this game (i last had it on floppy disk) and it took me 8 hours to complete it, may play again on the classic settings but i loved the game, and am glad to have finally completed it
My favourite computer game of all time, played it maybe 20 times at least
I've gotten to play some of the monkey island games before. A few minutes at a friend's place here and there, a demo once in a while. This is the first time I've gotten to really sit down and commit to finishing one, and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.
The noun/verb combo system for interacting with the world was kind of unintuitive and slow to operate, which became a problem when transporting the grog and firing myself out of the cannon.
The puzzles can be pretty opaque and difficult to figure out, and some of the items you need can be easy to miss. Be patient and willing to try weird stuff. Don't just look and touch, remember you can push, pull, open, close, talk, and hand out free bananas, too. If you get stuck, there's some fantastic walkthroughs you can access right from the game's own steam page. Not gonna lie, I consulted those a lot.
Mechanical clankiness aside of course, this was a delight to play. The sense of humor, the rich and detailed ways in which you can interact with the world around you, and the zany and bizarre character interactions make this a puzzle-adventure worth sitting down with any time.
Absolutely hilarious. Always liked point and click games. Never played Monkey Island but I heard a lot about it from someone I know. To think something that was written with wit back in our childhood is still around and memorable today is something!
A true classic, with many LeChuckles (see what I did there?)
This game's swordplay mechanics were so ahead of their time that modern games like Nier and Sekiro are still struggling to catch up.
very clever puzzles and great for parent an child to play togather.
Masterpiece <3
This is THE point and click adventure game. A wacky adventure following Guybrush Threepwood, a wannabe pirate. You'll pull your hair out as you work your way through this story to bring about the demise of the infamous Pirate Le Chuck.
I'm 43 now, and this game is just as good as it was when I was a kid. Excellent to see it remastered :)
Although my fave was "The Curse of Monkey island".
Totally takes me back to the good old days of PC gaming
It was great
Classic point and click adventure
Just like I remember it from 30 years ago
One of the best games ever made
Never pay more than 20 dollars for a computer game-Guybrush
Played this game some 30y ago, had a lot of fun replaying it.
Awesome game still holds it own many years later. The update is great
The second greatest game I've ever played!
great game in the 90s best point and click game ever
Classic point and click, good for new comers and nostalgia seekers
The monkey was cool.
U want to play pirat, play monkey
An absolute CLASSIC
THE SECRET OF oney ieand
The Secret of Monkey Island never grows old! Even after all these years, the pixelated charm of Guybrush Threepwood remains as dashing as ever. Don’t get me wrong—the reimagined artwork in the Special Edition is masterfully crafted, especially the backgrounds. Yet, I still find myself sailing back to the nostalgic pirate life of the 1990 original. Luckily, with just a click of a button you can switch the artwork back and forth.
This game is a must-play treasure for anyone who loves a great story and has a swashbuckling thirst for adventure. Every Monkey Island game truly levels up your sense of humor and challenges your brain to solve puzzles in creative, out-of-the-box ways. The Special Edition adds suburb voice acting, a beautiful soundtrack, and a timeless, legendary experience.
It’s an insult, worthy of the Sword Master, that the game isn’t available on the latest Apple systems.
I’m glad this was my first point-and-click adventure. The writing is humorous, the pixel art looks gorgeous & the voice acting is fantastic. However, due to being a complete novice, I felt overly reliant on the hint system
I don't care about the remake but this also has the game I remember as a child, amazing
