Since 2019 the release date of this game, me and my brother loved playing it but the game always crashed by the boss in Act 3 with the background that has the clock. We replayed the game a dozen of times hoping the crash was finally fixed all the way to 2022.
Finally on the 26 April 2022, I decided to purchase the game on steam and boom. The game is not crashing anymore and even has our save data. Thank you to the developers for making this game. It's really one of the best multiplayer rogue games I've ever played and seen. I've seen some negative reviews and I'm assuming it's from the people who hasn't played it as long to the point where you can absorb body after body and just play around without worrying about dying that often.
I love this game and I really hope the developers decide to make a part 2 and/or even more games that are multiplayer. We already got all the characters in Act 1, 2 and 3. We just need the truck driver in Act 2 and a lot in Act 4. We haven't seen Act 5 yet besides on the YouTube videos. Finally can finish this game without crashes getting in the way. Thank you once again to the Dev team. You guys are one of the best indie developers... Hands down.
EDIT: Finished the game today but still have 5 more characters to unlock. I really love this game and hope they make a part 2. : )
Quite possibly the best modern rogue-lite on steam
Hyperparasite's formula for designing a richly crafted love letter to the 80s certainly doesn't go unnoticed. The entire game itself is filled with cheeky references to 80s pop culture. From the outset, the combat & gameplay loop is what you should expect from a well designed twin stick rogue-lite; tight, fluid controls, procedurally generated level pathways & randomized upgrades that are never the same during your next play thorough. Permadeath is a factor that shouldn't put you off as the gameplay loop is designed to keep you replaying the core concept until you completely finish it. From start to finish the complete experience should take you around 2-3 hours, providing you have all the sub-levels unlocked. Which i might add are fully accessible in the wrong millennium update.
Compared to RAD's (another modern roguelite) clunky combat & bland procedural generation, hyperparasite is head & shoulders above it's competition. If you are a fan of well designed rogue titles, then this one is an absolute gem.
HyperParasite handles its core mechanic pretty well: the parasite is capable enough but extremely fragile, and the body-snatching gameplay is awesome when you've got (most) every host in a level unlocked. However, this makes progression really frustrating because, as far as I can tell, no host bodies are shared between levels. So, as is generally the case in a roguelike, you'll throw yourself against the wall time and time again learning the mechanics and perfecting your skills, finally moving up a level, only to get a bad break in that level and be running around trying to kite with your stupid fragile parasite because there ain't no body in that entire level you'll be able to snatch until you unlock it. Even just one or two enemy types carrying over between levels would've been huge. It's always been the purview of games like this to make you "git gud," but while that difficulty spike is thrilling the first couple of times, it sucks every time after that.
On a somewhat related note, some boss variety would've be nice as well; I'm sick to death of fighting fucking Double Trouble already.
But gripes aside, it's worth the price of admission if you're a roguelike fiend and looking for a unique, albeit flawed take on the genre. Seriously, that body snatching mechanic feels amazing. So satisfying.
The game is a good roguelike, my kinda game but lacks basic video features like changing resolutions or windowed mode which is a deal breaker for me. Even though it is 21:9 supported (in Fullscreen only) the game looks like its running in 1080p instead of 1440p on my Acer X34 monitor and there is no option to change resolutions currently.
Refunding this, The game has potential but cant recommend it like this.
I've tried to enjoy this game but I can't. The game is fun, don't get me wrong but the core issue here is that my game has crashed on 6 different occasions now and I'm tired of it. It happened once on the boss of the third map, twice when I possessed a badass miniboss character, etc.
Fix your shit. I regret purchasing this, what's the point of playing if the game crashes and then you reboot it and lost all your gold/possessed dude and start at the beginning again? No checkpoints or nothing.
Solid twin stick shooter. A bit slow if youre more used to games like Gungeon. Easy to get in to and develop your base of characters. My main complaint after about 6 hours of gameplay is the lack of video and controller options. Graphics options are limited to Low or High and you cant adjust your look sensitivity. Oh! And the descriptions are too small. Its fun.
At start it seemed to me like an ordinary boring roguelike, first 40 minutes was monotonous and grindy.
I noted music (track of the first location actually) and good visual style.
The game revealed itself after i beat first boss (which is actually not so spectacular from point of experience and gameplay) but then you got access to new areas with a new style and challenges.
Suddenly the game gains its true colors and shine - fun, variable and challenging, as a good roguelike should be.
I find that on these levels game prepared brand new host bodies (playable characters) as well as enemies.
And even on first locations it can surprise you with new interesting events, just give it a shot.
As for core mechanics - all good, moving, shooting and using skills feels just right and well designed.
Ye, there are weaknesses, as confusing tutorial, very small icons and fonts, unclear power-ups. But all these trivia.
Technical part is good, i didnt faced any bug or glitch.
All in all it is a good game and most importantly it is fun and aesthetically attractive
Thats a refund for me.
The whole game is about dodging bullets, smashing trash cans for money, and collecting brains to give to some strange shopowner who wants to help you take over the world for some reason. I also don't know why an alien set on destroying the world needs money, but whatever.
Not donna lie. I felt like i wanted to keep playing to figure out if there was anything else to the game. But it felt very shallow, and low on content. And i don't think the game has anything other than what i have already seen, to offer.
This is what the game offers:
1. Every shop has 3-4 glowing orbs to buy, but you won't know what does until you buy them. I guess you get to understand what they do after a few times. And they drop if the host you have infected with your alien dies. So its basically not worth every buying them. Because you also use money to unlock heroes.
2. If you want to unlock new charecters you first need to collect the brain of the person, and give it to the shop owner. Then use trashcan dollars to buy them. I don't really get it, but that is how it works.
3. You once in a while collect a puddle of energy on the floor that gives your alien and host 1 of 3 powerups, they don't do you a whole lot of good unless you stack them a bunch. And even then, they don't do a whole lot of good.
4. You keep on just going from room to room killing enemies and smashing trashcans.
Thats about it. Have fun!
GG!
good concept but definitely not enough content and the playtime is made up by ridiculous grinding. Most times you get to the shop it feels like the special item is the same amount of gold as all the money on the map after youve gone through and destroyed everything. Everytime you get to a new area you just die cause you can't unlock the characters on the map, and it takes about 10 games to be able to do anything in the level
Game crashes like nobodys business, i'm done with this game until it gets some content and fixes the ridiculous crashes
Had a blast playing this game!
You are an alien parasite chased by the humans and you have only 1 HP!
One hit, you die and repeat: it doesn't get more rogue than this.
So you can absorb your enemies, use their abilities and weapons to unlock all of them run after run.
There are many references to the 80s: characters, neons, appearance and soundtrack.
Strongly recommended, also in co-op.
One of the best arcade rougelikes I've ever played. As an microscope hobbyist I love games where you can play as an amoeboid creature and this game does not let you down. The parasite itself is no push over when outside a host, and I particularly like that when you reach new areas it feels like you have to gain a foot hold on the inhabitants.
The enemies are awesome as well and as you encounter new ones often time you think wow I really want to be able to control that guy, especially with the bosses so you better goal oriented grinding.
Since it is early access there still are some bugs that can be annoying but never really seem to take away my enjoyment of the game at least. I got the game pretty early on and as each subsequent update is released the game just gets better and better.
I'm really enjoying the hilarious mood of the game. It's the kind of game that makes you come back to it, i'm looking forward for the final release. By the way the shopping cart man kick ass!!!
Been following this game since it was first showcased at Milan Games Week back in 2018. All I can say is...WOW. The game was very different back then, now it feels and play really smooth and polished for an Early Access game. I'm a sucker for everything 80s, and this game has it all: tons of cameos/references/quotes from 80s movies, cartoons and games, a very cool synthwave OST and a great atmosphere.
It can be HARD at the beginning, but believe me, give it some time and you will unlock new stuff, characters, weapons, etc., and it will be amazing. Every run feels different, it's incredible how much stuff there's to it. You won't regret it.
Boss battles are really crazy, I've rarely seen something like this in similar games. Also, local co-op is just plain fun (I hope more games implement local co-op, it's something devs should always consider!).
I will surely buy a console version too when it comes out (I can see it particularly suitable to the Nintendo Switch platform).
Overall this game has a great potential to become a cult/classic, can't wait for it to be completed and out of EA!
I generally despise every game I play and have to be won over. It's unreasonable and surely a flaw but I'm aware of it and try and take it into account.
There's not many games I've decided I loved more quickly than Hyperparasite.
I've got a really soft spot for "possession" in games, Paradroid, Droid Assault, Silicon Valley, Messiah, Socketeer, so I was already pretty receptive and I LOVE twin stick shooters, so that was another layer of black scales knocked off my stone heart. The final rusty nail, hammered through the feet of the bile-filled demon I have in lieu of a soul, was how authentically old it looks without looking garbage, it's not just a filter, it's everything. It's like a mix of Zombies Ate My Neighbours and Body Harvest, or more broadly, 16bit Sega blended with 64bit Nintendo.
I've not been following the development very long or very closely but I've extremely high hopes for this game.
Great Game. The idea of infiltrating bodies is fun. The controls are good. The art style fits the theme. For an Early Access titel quite polished. If you like Twin-Stick shooters and roguelike games, this is for you. Looking forward for more content.
Amazing twin-stick with a twist. Hard as nails, sweet tight game-play, gritty but great graphics, and a great sountrack too. Between this and Tormental this is the season to be a TS fan. Both are still in EA and both already are crazy fun. If you like these types of games get them both.
It's pretty sweet. Crunchy and fluid, you play a slime who slurps into people and gives the rest of them a lickin'.
There's actually quite a bit of content, lots of different enemies to kill or possess and zones to explore.
Small objection though: while there's plenty of diversity in terms of the characters you can play as, when you fight thos same characters they feel pretty similar, where they all telegraph an attack and then expect you to get out of the way in more or less the same way.
I also don't quite understand the unlock system, it seems like when you enter the zone after the first boss then all the enemies are locked so you have to beat a bunch of rooms without making any mistakes in order to make any progress.
I don't often buy Early Access game, but I had a chance to try HyperParasite in London at Rezzed the last weekend, and yes, i had to buy it.
First of all, the game is thousand times more polished that what i do usually expect from EA games. I died like 20 times before the tutorial was over, but that is only pushing me to play more.
The devs at the booth were awesome and friendly, it's refreshing to meet people that funnel such a passion in their work. I am gonna play a lot more before adding more technicalities to this review, but already know, in less than 2 hours, the amount of 80s refs to stuff I grew up with gave me glorious goosebumps. At some point I will also stop dying this much, i guess.
Really cool game, very glad i bought it, and freaking glad I am playing it.
[Edit - 1st of September] Since the review I doubled my playing time, the game grew with weekly updates that kept it alive and show the devs real dedication, i died countless times, and i finally managed to beat the hell out of Rocco Marcellino. Ah, and I met the devs again in Gamescom and they are still cool. Bigger thumps up than before. This is what an early access should be.
PS still love this game
The type of game that encourages different play styles in every run, the body swap mechanic is really fun and there are many characters to try, all of this in an ironic vision of the 80s
