This game is PERFECT. Combining rhythm mechanics with roguelite mechanics is such a genius idea, it's hard to believe there aren't more games like this. You want to retry runs just to hear the songs again.
This game is very difficult, but it's FAIR. Naturally there's plenty of variance with procedural generation, but (almost) every single enemy is perfectly predictable. With such a small health pool, you really feel as though you're dancing on a razor's edge between victory and defeat in every floor. This game takes hundreds of hours to master - the skill ceiling is unbelievably high and provides endless replayability.
10/10.
Hot Take: I hate that in order to get the full story of some rogue like games, I have to complete multiple runs.
Anyway.....
This is one of the most charming yet brutal games i've ever played. It's got the 8 bit art style and music to make you feel like this is gonna be a grand ole' easy time.....
BUT IT AIN"T THAT ONCE YOU HIT ZONE 4
Zone 4 made me question my manhood.
Zone 4 made me realize I need therapy.
Zone 4 made me realize I might die alone someday.
Zone 4 is god's way of saying "Life's not fair, he's an expired coupon for free mac and cheese at your local Walmart." after you were murdered in a double homicide.
Regardless, this game is amazing.
9/10
I haven't played a rhythm before and found this incredibly fun. It's very satisfying to get incrementally better while listening to phenomenal music. Really scratches the Binding of Issac itch for me
Amazing music, beautiful art, challenging gameplay. Zone 3 dual music is fire.
Synchrony DLC were modders that was approached by devs.
Plus hatsune miku
Very good game. Don't try to import the song Bonetrousle from Undertale into it. 8/10.
This game is hard as nails, but absolutely fantastic, fun, and rewarding. I highly recommend for anyone that likes a roguelike challenge and/or rhythm games.
This game has a long learning curve, but is entirely worth the pain you will suffer on the path to perfection!
Really fun and addicting! The soundtrack is the best part as I often will just listen to its soundtrack while I work. The game is fun too and the gameplay is a fun experiment of rhythm mixed with 2d action. the game gets absurdly difficult really fast so you'd have to be a masochist to try to complete it, but its fun as a casual game
A really nice roguelike, the rhytm aspect is easy to learn but hard to master, there is a wide variety of possible builds you can have with all the equipment
The enemy variation is enough to keep you on your toes :D
This game goes from Easy mode if you're playing casually to Asian mode if you're going for all achievements. I'm Asian so obviously I got all the achievements, and this is the hardest thing I've ever done in a video game by far. This game made me feel emotions I didn't know existed on both ends of the spectrum. I'm literally going to see a therapist to recover from the emotional trauma inflicted when going for completion of this game.
10/10 would recommend.
This game is, simply put, a masterpiece. It holds up 10 years later as one of the very best in its genre. This is coming from somebody who generally dislikes rhythm games. It pushes you into a generated world full of different enemies that you must master planning your moves around. The predictable moveset means that at each turn, you have the chance to plow through the competition, given you have the skills required. Each world is full of a new set of enemies, all coming with their own beautiful character art to match the scene. I will definitely by coming back to this game in the future.
Verdict: 10/10 - Must Play
If you're good at rhythm games, fine. If no, this game is very punishing and the normal way that games like this tend to help you progress when you're struggling (i.e. getting upgrades in the lobby area so that you're stronger on your next run) don't make much impact here. The result was a really steep difficulty curve, particularly since the rhythm movement prevents you from ever being able to stop and read the description for items/upgrades being offered.
My experience was frustrating and disappointing
this game is so genuinely fun, it feels so nice to play and it's unironically addicting, I love it
im thankful for the fact that its 80% off, but the fact that i only had to pay 4 dollars for probably one of the best rhythm games ive ever played feels kinda like im a thief. it mixes two niche genres together but it somehow is really fun with both of them. its definitely not the easiest game to get used to, but its still really really really fun regardless
Tight gameplay, great pixelart, cool characters, eight awesome soundtracks by absolute legends, and Hatsune Miku.
Pain in the ass, but in a good way. I love rhythm games and roguelikes so this game is peak
this game is such a classic. absolutely adore everything about it! difficult but fair after you understand each enemy's attack pattern. Crypt of the NecroDancer is absolutely worth buying.
This game is so addicting. It's a dungeon crawler, rouge-like that has procedurally generated dungeons. The growth I experienced when playing this game felt immaculate. I would recommend this game for anyone who wants a challenge.
Play to the rhythm of a banger soundtrack; find the best move each beat against enemies with varied attack patterns. You have to constantly be on the lookout for audio and visual cues.
Probably one of the hardest games ever - especially for challenge characters and achievements - but no crappy RNG or instadeath. Works great on Steam Deck (even 6W TDP).
A little tough to start but it gets addictive.
I bought this game in early access so many years ago. It was my first early access game as a new PC gamer. It was and still is an amazing experience that I'll never forget. I even bought it again on Nintendo Switch. My girlfriend at the time, who had never played and never would play the game, bought me the singing merchant plushy for my Birthday. It was the first time a girl had gifted me something so thoughtful and personally endearing.
When we broke up years later, she took our cats, our friends, my heart, and the singing merchant. I can still hear his voice and it makes me sad.
Never played a game before where your skill level depends on how hard you vibe with the music. Thankfully, the OST bumps harder than I assumed was legally allowed.
I really want to like the game, but it feels more frustrating than fun. the music is good, but moving to the beat feels more like a restriction. definitely not for everyone, and isn't something you can easily pick up and play.
One of the best rhythm games ever made.
The soundtrack is fantastic, and it has a host of alternative soundtracks by now that are amazing, too.
The core gameplay seems simplistic at first - after all, you just press left/right/up/down - but it derives a ton of depth from that simple premise. Add the randomized levels, the change in cadence during bossfights, the alternative characters and their rule changes, the multiplayer modes and the plethora of items, and that's a lot for how little money they ask for it.
(On a sidenote, I can heartily recommend the Nintendo-spinoff of this, Cadence of Hyrule, too!)
Possibly the best rhythm game of all time. Maybe also one of the best roguelikes of all time. What more is there to say? Why are you not already playing this game??? What is your excuse? That’s right—there is none.
really fun gameplay if you can get used to the mechanics, and a banger soundtrack as well
Well, apparently me, a professional musician who plays numerous instruments for decades and recorded dozens of albums, can't get the rhytm right to the beat. Ok, sure.
Great game, fun gameplay with a difficult but rewarding skill curve and very high skill ceiling.
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Has a total of 7 trading cards.
This game has a relatively steep learning curve, but in a way that feels so rewarding rather than painful. You can really feel yourself slowly improving and getting better, and it feels so good!
It is so cool to just be a different type of rhythm game! The enemies all move in different patterns, and when you finally get in sync with them, it feels so good!
Much recommended!!
i may have a problem but this game is quite amazing in my honest opinion.
Took a few minutes to get into the flow, but this is a fantastic game, I love the levelups and how it varies the gameplay (and how the songs sing to me even when I've stopped playing!)
Fun and easy game to learn, Challenging at times as well. Great sound track!
this game has one best flow state feelings I've ever felt in a game once you start groovin
Felt like updating my review, as the Synchrony DLC has since come out of early access.
In my original review, I complained about the new 4.0 engine's quirks and nuances. I picked up the game in 2017, just after Amplified came out, and I got really familiar with the game. It has the second highest playtime on my steam page (and I put over 200 hours into the switch version too.) So, when the new engine came around, the small changes really bothered me.
Certain exploits, glitches, or even basic interactions were changed as the game was essentially rebuilt. Most of them have been addressed and reinstated since early access, and I am not as frustrated as I was originally with the changes. Plus, there is a new legacy option to play with the old engine, something I had wished for in my old review. It's the best of both worlds! The online cross-play that Synchrony offers is genuinely really cool.
Necrodancer was such a unique take on the rogue like formula at the time, and it took hold of my life. I have many memories with it and it changed the way I look at both rhythm games and rogue likes. In hindsight, it seems obvious that old turn based rogue likes could be adapted into a rhythm game: your hand is forced to make a move before you are ready, your strategy always shifting and changing just like the enemies around you. It's such a thrilling grind, pulsing with the tunes of legendary indie composer Danny Baranowsky. It's hard to describe how Necrodancer makes me feel.
The learning curve is steep. VERY steep. There is an excellent [video essay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok0NjzK0FHg) describing why Necrodancer has one of the hardest PS4 platinums. Not to mention that both Amplified and Synchrony have their own achievements too! However, I would argue that it is simple to pick up and learn. Anyone can beat Cadence with a little practice and patience!
The mechanics are brilliant. The music is top notch. I'll never be able to get all the achievements, but the grind is extremely addicting!
(Review shared from my Backloggd page)
This rhythm game is quite hardcore, and has a steep learning curve. At the beginning you will struggle even on the 1st zone, but the longer you play, the better you begin to feel the game. In a way I would compare it with Osu, but it's a different game of course. Definitely recommend for musicians and all the people interested in playing RHYTHM GAMES
Can I pass level 2? No! Does that stop me from playing for hours? Also no. It’s a fun rhythm game. I enjoy learning the enemies as well as different character and game types. Just now learning about the different mods in workshop.
Как выпускник музыкальной школы ответственно заявляю, что так всё там и происходит
An extremely fun and engaging roguelike with the creative twist of having to play to the beat of a killer soundtrack. With multiple different character story routes and some really cool DLC that adds a lot to the game, Crypt of the Necrodancer has a lot of replay value. Like any good roguelike, each floor is randomized each time to keep it from feeling too much like a grind. Cadence's base story and those in the DLCs are accessible for more casual gamers, but for those of us who like more of a challenge, there's a lot to get better at and overcome for those nice dopamine hits. Plus, if the music gets old, it lets you set any level to any mp3 on your computer and adjusts the tempo of the gameplay accordingly. Can't recommend more.
game so good till you tear your hair out trying to beat all zones mode as monk
A completely unique experience. A must play for music lovers.
Very fun but incredibly difficult
Fun rhythm rogue-like that kind of reminds me of the mystery dungeon type of games. Haven't dabbled much with the DLCs, but the core game offers a fairly solid story. The soundtrack is also pretty solid as well. Overall, I'd say the game's a worthy purchase for someone looking out for a game to play at odd hours.
Totally obscure title alert, man this game shoudve garnerd it's own occult following like ftl but despite that, the stuff you have here is pretty darn awesome, like the equipments and shit are all so well balanced and differetiated that it's a little bit on the nose, of course the more you cycle through the shop equiments the better they'll be but that's just videogame logic, hina logic muweheheh
you have to be atleast a little decent with the rythm tho as to try and not die later on the game where the room stops becoming 1 room with a controlled amount of variables to a entire fuckfest of trojan horses and a dragon chasi after your ass
which is why i reccomend finding "bows" ort "staffs" or at the early game grab spears or rapiers.. they'll make your lifesooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more eeasier than it normally is, like you should believe me, in all fairness range and carefulness is how you should play this game as poor cassidy (wrong name) over here is being tormented by the dungeon she vows to exterminate, well there are hidden levels and like bosses but im not too skilled enough to beat them on my own so carrry on my legacy and have me cooked a decent meal for everything in this game is about the GRAVY (cringe ik)
A must play for rhythim game fans.
it has:
-singleplayer(co-op is free though, and multiplayer is dlc)
-an impressive amount of content
-takes practice to be the best
-HATSUNE MIKU????(dlc*)
-story(wow who would have guessed)
-custom rules for players who might find it difficult(or dont like challenges)
-unique enemies
-BANGERS?(holy shi i can accend with that soundtrack)
-the shopowner is singing(good for him <3)
-a new level every time(it can also be seeded)
PLS BUY THIS IT EVEN COLLABED WITH "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA" AND MADE A NEW GAME TOGETHER.
peak game(9/10)
It's pretty decent, rythm based roguelike. has a lot of content, and probably one of the hardest games out there to 100%.
has gotten tons of updates despite being a 9 year old game, and is still updated to this day. nothing quite like it.
whilst i never managed to kill the necrodancer cause of how hard this game is, i still had a lot of fun, and will probably play it more in the future.
I beat Zone 1 with Aria. It might not be an All Zones clear but I still feel pretty cool 😎
Too easy to miss timings on critical movements and attacks, even when I'm hitting the buttons. Though enemies are individually easy and all enemies have simple, predictable patterns, the randomized dungeons throw great big hordes of them at a time and expects you to react almost instantly in time with the rhythm. The best I could do was play on the easy character that didn't have to move in time with the beat. Or maybe I'm just bad at it and this is not the genre for me.
great music but pretty challenging for a casual player ... hard for me to get far
game is super cool and it has miku so 10/10 especially if u get on sale (ㆁωㆁ)
