An extremely fun and engaging roguelike with the creative twist of having to play to the beat of a killer soundtrack. With multiple different character story routes and some really cool DLC that adds a lot to the game, Crypt of the Necrodancer has a lot of replay value. Like any good roguelike, each floor is randomized each time to keep it from feeling too much like a grind. Cadence's base story and those in the DLCs are accessible for more casual gamers, but for those of us who like more of a challenge, there's a lot to get better at and overcome for those nice dopamine hits. Plus, if the music gets old, it lets you set any level to any mp3 on your computer and adjusts the tempo of the gameplay accordingly. Can't recommend more.
game so good till you tear your hair out trying to beat all zones mode as monk
A completely unique experience. A must play for music lovers.
Fun rhythm rogue-like that kind of reminds me of the mystery dungeon type of games. Haven't dabbled much with the DLCs, but the core game offers a fairly solid story. The soundtrack is also pretty solid as well. Overall, I'd say the game's a worthy purchase for someone looking out for a game to play at odd hours.
Totally obscure title alert, man this game shoudve garnerd it's own occult following like ftl but despite that, the stuff you have here is pretty darn awesome, like the equipments and shit are all so well balanced and differetiated that it's a little bit on the nose, of course the more you cycle through the shop equiments the better they'll be but that's just videogame logic, hina logic muweheheh
you have to be atleast a little decent with the rythm tho as to try and not die later on the game where the room stops becoming 1 room with a controlled amount of variables to a entire fuckfest of trojan horses and a dragon chasi after your ass
which is why i reccomend finding "bows" ort "staffs" or at the early game grab spears or rapiers.. they'll make your lifesooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more eeasier than it normally is, like you should believe me, in all fairness range and carefulness is how you should play this game as poor cassidy (wrong name) over here is being tormented by the dungeon she vows to exterminate, well there are hidden levels and like bosses but im not too skilled enough to beat them on my own so carrry on my legacy and have me cooked a decent meal for everything in this game is about the GRAVY (cringe ik)
A must play for rhythim game fans.
it has:
-singleplayer(co-op is free though, and multiplayer is dlc)
-an impressive amount of content
-takes practice to be the best
-HATSUNE MIKU????(dlc*)
-story(wow who would have guessed)
-custom rules for players who might find it difficult(or dont like challenges)
-unique enemies
-BANGERS?(holy shi i can accend with that soundtrack)
-the shopowner is singing(good for him <3)
-a new level every time(it can also be seeded)
PLS BUY THIS IT EVEN COLLABED WITH "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA" AND MADE A NEW GAME TOGETHER.
peak game(9/10)
It's pretty decent, rythm based roguelike. has a lot of content, and probably one of the hardest games out there to 100%.
has gotten tons of updates despite being a 9 year old game, and is still updated to this day. nothing quite like it.
whilst i never managed to kill the necrodancer cause of how hard this game is, i still had a lot of fun, and will probably play it more in the future.
I beat Zone 1 with Aria. It might not be an All Zones clear but I still feel pretty cool 😎
Too easy to miss timings on critical movements and attacks, even when I'm hitting the buttons. Though enemies are individually easy and all enemies have simple, predictable patterns, the randomized dungeons throw great big hordes of them at a time and expects you to react almost instantly in time with the rhythm. The best I could do was play on the easy character that didn't have to move in time with the beat. Or maybe I'm just bad at it and this is not the genre for me.
great music but pretty challenging for a casual player ... hard for me to get far
game is super cool and it has miku so 10/10 especially if u get on sale (ㆁωㆁ)
Great concept but poor execution. To beat the main story, you have to beat the game perfectly without missing a single beat or getting hit while using the weakest weapon, which takes something like ~100 hours.
Girl with shovel and dagger kills living instrument
amazing game
Originally paid like 2$ for this game on ps4 in 2016 and loved it. Eventually bought it on switch when it launched on there to play portable, and PC for all the DLC. I've most likely got well over 500 hours in this game in total and still consider it stupidly fun. If you like rhythm games, and you also like Roguelikes, you owe it to yourself to play and get good at this game. The fact that it's been receiving regular updates for nearly 10 years, has a dedicated ZELDA spin-off (Still amazed), and is also getting another spin-off sequel, should tell you enough about how good this game is.
It all started when I played the Cadence of Hyrule demo
It was agonizing and I spent multiple days insisting that the game was ass yet playing it anyways
Until I finally beat the boss and thought that ass was kinda peak so I quickly bought the full game and all its DLCs
After beating the game like 3 or 4 times in a row I finally thought "What the fuck is a Crypt of the NecroDancer?"
And then the pain began anew
I love this game :steamhappy:
I bought it for all my friends and only two of them play it
I can't hold a beat to save my life and can't complete a run on "easy mode + no beats + walk through walls at will" turbo game journo difficulty. still gooned 500 times to the Hatsune Miku character died without regrets 10/10
I mean it's just fantastic in every respect; Gameplay is fun an addictive as a roguelike, and is replayable beyond anything else I can really think of. Story isn't anything crazy but it's charming for the small part of the game it is, and definitely gets you hooked on the game as you learn the gameplay. Learning more about enemies and how to deal with them as you go feels incredibly intrinsically rewarding, and I love the interaction between micro gameplay ("What am I going to do on the next beat? In the next 3 beats? Should I try and kill this enemy or lure it out of the group?") and macro gameplay ("Where should I explore in the level next? Do I want this item?") It's a game that will ALWAYS have you thinking about your next move; I do think the comparison of rythm chess is somewhat apt- take chess, make it rythm-turn-based, remove all your other pieces, but let your king get access to loads of awesome weapons and upgrades, and have (effectively) all the enemies move in completely predictable ways. Music is phenomenal too, should go without saying lol, it's one of my most listened to soundtracks. I mean the fact that most characters have their own unique remix of every song in the game speaks for itself.
Very difficult game, the art style and music are nice though. It'd probably take A LONG time to master the controls and actually enjoy the game.
What's better than playing this casually on PC? Cranking it up with full-volume stereo and a projector! It's a whole new level of immersion and fun!
Yes, although it's a challenging game that takes time to master it is an amazing one. I have a lot of fun destroying enemies and following the beat. It's super fun and enticing, definitely recommend.
I'd heard about this game for years, but put off playing it, thinking that it wasn't for me. While I was correct to the extent that it's waayyy above my skill level as a casual, I've been having a RIDICULOUS amount of fun with it, and I think this game has a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy. Definitely recommend it.
An all-time classic, and a unique animal too. You won't be playing much that scratches the same itch that Crypt of the Necrodancer scratches. The music will ear-worm you and the gameplay, despite being rogue-like, is very satisfying with lots of room for advancement and lots of new pieces of gear and playable characters to unlock.
Game surely is for SOMEONE, but that someone is definitely not me. Too much going on, too fast and especially way too hard. Difficulty is more like a brick wall than a curve. If you enjoy pouring 10h into a game just to have basic competence then go ahead, otherwise avoid.
I bought this game on a whim 3 months ago, and barely has a day gone by where I haven't booted it up. The game is like a throwback to classic retro dungeon crawlers like Legend of Zelda spiced up with rhythm.
I'm a musician, so I have a habit of clicking and tapping on objects throughout the day, and this game is like doing just that - while fighting hordes of enemies to the beat of crazy dance music. It satisfies every inch of my soul. Can you even IMAGINE a cooler concept than that?!
The pixel art is bright and colourful and the mechanics are extensive - there's over a dozen different characters with unique quirks and challenges, like moving at double tempo or dying in a single hit. More on that, the rhythm aspect combined with the fast-paced combat makes this game's more ambitious challenges not for everyone. If you struggle to tap a steady beat you'll struggle to get some achievements, but when playing for fun, it's accessible to anyone. I also appreciate the accessibility options for epilepsy and such.
Difficulty aside, the DLCs are fantastic because they add myriads of new content without losing the feel of the game or creating an imbalance - not to mention the modding capabilities that come with Synchrony.
Really though, it's a 10/10. One of my favourites.
Great theme with a good variety of amusing items and enemies. The music is really infectious!
TLDR: Just no
After playing this for 20 hours and completed some all zones runs, I can safely say that this game can be BRUTALLY difficult and it's quite unfair to get easily swarmed by enemies especially at some of the boss stages where a lot of things is going on and it's almost impossible to keep track of everything. If something goes wrong or you lose your concentration for just a bit at late game, then say goodbye to your 30 minutes run.
If you want to pour hundreds of hours practicing something over and over again, then this game might be perfect for you.
the music is very good though
There is a lot of replayability in this game! Many modes and characters.
Phenomenal and creative rhythm game with a huge skill ceiling and fantastic music.
Great concept, great music, but man if you're bad at rhythm games, you're probably not gonna progress much, so be aware!
Let me start this by saying this is probably the most unique rhythm game I've ever played, maybe next to Vib-Ribbon.
At first when I bought the game on Switch a few years back, I wasn't sure about it. But as I played it more and more, i managed to eventually love it.
go buy it, peak game
The rhythm encourages the player to keep following. The pressure and challenge of each level is perfectly balanced with the melody/rhythm---not easy, not too difficult. The uncertainty and variety is very nice: generated dungeon maps together with many weapons, spells, and enemies make the game intriguing to continue and see what is behind the next level.
one of the hardest games to ever come out and nothing can come close
it surpasses games like dst or the forest when it comes to being unforgiving and punishing, basically taking everything you know about gaming and shoving a big f**k you in front of its face
honest to god, very fun game but incredibly tedious to hone in and be decent at
tldr one of the most hard but fair games ever. very fun gimmick that makes the game interesting. However the game wants you to win easing you in and providing practice and options
This is one of the most difficult but fair games of all time, and i love it so much. Rhythm based rougelike may sound weird but it is very intuitive. A nice way to think about it is that you are a chess piece moving a across a dungeon board and the turns are on the beat of a song and every enemy is an opposing piece trying to kill you.
The game is immaculately designed with every enemy moving in a consistent but interesting way. And while every enemy being consistent may sound boring the fun comes with learning every enemy and learning how to respond in any given scenario and perfecting your gameplay. The potential skill ceiling of this game is immensely high. this is to the point to where only 4% of people who played this game have finish a full run with the default character. While that may sound intimidating the game itself provides many ways to practice. This includes letting you individually fight every enemy, miniboss, boss and starting you out with segmented runs of the full game to get accustomed to every area and enemy in the game until your ready for a full run and even a mode where you can turn off the rhythm mechanic. And even if your starting to get tired of default game play there are many different characters to play that change up the game play and sometimes even fundamentally change how you play the game.
You can easily sink hundreds of hours into this game if you want to master this game, i have over 150 hours and ive only done like 70% of the full game.
fun roguelike rhythm game, pretty unique for its kind
This game is super cool, it makes you get better and better with music tempo, and the lore is amazing. Strongly recomended!
Lots of fun but im more than sure no one likes spending 200+ hours 100%ing the game
Still recommend it.
Personally this isn't entirely for me - I played enough to get to the final boss as the first main character, and after failing the second phase gave up. However I do love the core mechanics of a classic, simple dungeon crawler escalated to tense action by forcing regular movement. The later floors add really fun mechanics that make you really think on your feet about where you are and where you want to move next.
Ultimately, for me personally, each individual run feels a bit too similar for it to be truly engaging as a roguelike with a lack of enemy variety and the weapons/items not feeling like they deeply affect the build (besides wanting to get the weapon of your preference), so it did lack the classic level of replayability of this type of game. But there's enough content even on just attempting to finish the game once to justify the price.
Takes a while to get used to at the start, and the difficulty before it clicks can be frustrating, but holy fuck is getting used to the game rewarding. Everything about this game is charming, the soundtracks, artstyle, game mechanic, weapons and builds, the tidbits of lore. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you think the concept can grow on you I can't recommend this game enough.
I really wanted to like this, but there's just too much going on, and the difficulty to too much for me.
Fun interesting take on turn based roguelikes, music is a 10/10 so much so i now have this games BGM as my Binding of isaac music
Fun and charming.i just wish that putting on character costumes mimicked them fully. i love Miku and her singing over the BG music is adorable but i hate her ability.
genuinely one of the greatest games i have every played. huge fan of rhythm games going in and now i'm an even bigger fan. i would buy this game for myself 10 extra times if i could i'm not even joking i have become obsessed, and i absolutely cannot wait for rift of the necrodancer to release too
Such a freaking blast, amazing game, amazing soundtrack, my goat crypt of the necrodancer :D
This game is crazy hard but it's a ton of fun
I did not think that I would find this game to be very repayable... Until I found myself comfortably playing the game over and over. It's simplicity is one of its greatest strengths. It's easy to get into and easy to replay. I mostly play on my Switch since it is the perfect game for me to pick up and put in a few runs while I have some spare moments but I can also grind out longer sessions if I want to.
The soundtrack is also fantastic!
RATING: 7/7 "ONE OF THE BEST"
For a long time, I was convinced I had no interest in old-fashioned, arcade-y, video-game-ass video games. I now have 260 hours Crypt of the Necrodancer. The soundtrack is fantastic, the gameplay is perfect, and you can enjoy it for one playthrough or thousands. I often boot it up for just a single run a day, or to crack a new record or achievement. And to be honest, it kept me sane during the pandemic.
Cannot recommend it enough.
I've become so chained to the rhythm, that I continue to hear the sick beats of this game in my head even after closing the game. I can go about my daily life and the sountrack continues to invade my brain, and I feel like I'm almost moving to the beat myself- I just saw down and tried to read a book, and I was processing the words to tge beat of the music- I'm writing this review right now, to the beat of the music. Help me.
Also, if you get the Synchrony DLC, there's a mod for the game that lets you play as a Monke, and it's the best thing in the world.
This game proved to me that I can't stay on beat to save my life. Did the first 3 zones with the main character then got hard stuck on the forth zone. Turned on a mode that made the game turn-based and finished it. It's a fun game, just keep in mind that if it is played as it is intended the game is hard, like really hard. Especially if you can't keep up with the beat.
An actual, genuine roguelike--top-down, synchronized movement, tough as nails--mixed with a rhythm game. One of the greatest games ever made, but beware: it's got a steep learning curve. I hated it when I first played it (on other platforms), thinking that I was just not skilled enough to get anywhere past the first area. But the more I tried again and again (and it's easy to restart and give it another go), it started to click. Like playing music, you have to find your groove. And Crypt of the NecroDancer absolutely sings when you move with the game rather than against it.
It's more arcade-y than you think. There are good reasons why there are dojo's for practicing enemy patterns. This game can get real hard without both practice and luck/more practice. The beats are pretty good though and there are many soundtracks you can play and listen to on the complete edition.
Well. Maybe not complete yet, but hopefully Miku is the last paid content drop because of Rift's release.
