The story is about a girl called Naokee. She's forced to become an assassin after being taken from her place of origin. As time goes on, she encounters people who are willing to help her break free and learn the truth, as the technologically advancing city is slowly thrown into chaos.
You're trying to take her towards the end result you see fit, as you can influence aspects of her personality so she prioritizes certain things over others. There is no good or bad ending, there's only action and consequence. The connection to her can only be severed by death.
Gameplay:
The game is a sci-fi, fast paced, turn-based RPG where split-second decisions can decide a fight. Utilizing the combo-system of the game, the player is allowed to gain significant advantage over the enemy, but one wrong move and everything can go wrong.
As for the non-combat part of the game, the player has to make decisions to drive the game forward, and the ending is decided based on those decisions.
Game features:
- Fast paced turn based battles.
- Combat based on combo system.
- Dark, futuristic atmosphere accompanied by a dark story
- Multiple Endings based on player choice.
- Assassination System - Avoid direct confrontation by Assassinating enemies.
- Challenging, unique combat
- Forming Naokee's personality/attitude through choice

Naokee is best girl.
This game is fun and has some good characters. The difficulty at some points can get a little hard if you arent high enough level, and sometime enemies just feel overpowered, but the game is still fun and has some really great characters that make you love or hate them.
First of all, I would like to say that I am proud to say that this game got its start in one of the greatest (IMHO) online RPGMaker communities in existence: RMN . I used to be very active a few years ago, and the people there have helped me move forward in my life during some tough times. There are MANY very good free games over there, a few of which led to the development of this one. Please check them out!
Now, onto the review!
As you could probably guess by the blurb above, I really enjoy RPGMaker games, even the ones that tend to feel a bit samey. Although this one is definitely a cut above, it still falls into that category a little bit. Many of the sprites are stock with RPGMaker VX (or VX Ace; I'm a bit out of touch with the community...), and a lot of the tiling assets are as well. But, aside from that, there has been a lot of custom work done to make this game a gem!
The music is great, if only a tiny bit repetitive. The in battle animations are amazing and add a lot of style to the game. And the custom cut scenes add a feeling of depth to the game that not many RPGM games seem to offer.
The battle system is a bit tough to get into at first, but it flows very well once you get much later into the game. There isn't a lot of variety in terms of skills, but there is a good reason for that. As is, the battle system is fairly complicated, and I couldn't even imagine what went into this from a development perspective to make it work as well as it does. Adding one minor layer of complexity probably adds quite a few hours of coding and testing just to make it work. Either way, it is super fun to use and far better than a simple "choose skill, choose target, wait... rinse, repeat" battle system that is in almost every RPGM game these days.
While on the topic of combat, one of the nice things is most battles are avoidable. Not only are they avoidable, you can get "quick kills" if you are patient. If you manage to get a quick kill, you still gaining EXP and money. This takes out a LOT of the tediousness of grinding/slogging through long dungeons. My only minor complaint is, in order to get a quick kill, you need to be behind the enemy sprite, and there are a few enemies that are a bit difficult to tell which direction they are facing. With some practice, I figured them all out, but it's not always intuitive.
The story seemed interesting, but I really feel like I was missing some backstory... It feels like the developer assumes you know most of what happened prior to the events of the game, which can turn some people off. I do know that there are at least 2 other games in the same vein as this one (one of which I'm pretty sure is available on steam, the other on RMN, both free, I think...), so it is possible to get the backstory if you really want to. Even without it though, there is enough there to hold well enough on its own. It did seem to drag on near the end, although I imagine that might be different depending on your choices throughout the story.
There are plenty of achievements, which I am sure I will bang my head against a wall to get in the coming weeks and months (not a lot of free time...), most of which are free just by playing the game. I'm hoping there will be a way to at least see what they are at some point so they become easier to find.
A few minor nit-picks that I noticed through my play-through: there seems to be some weird jittering of map tiles, almost like they are tearing away from one another by a pixel or two. It only happens every so often, and I don't think it's intentional. It does give the game an oddly eerie feeling from time to time, though. There are also a few bugs during battle that I noticed. For instance, if you are choosing attacks very quickly, there is a chance that your character will not return to their original position. I haven't noticed it having any effect other than visual ones, so not a big deal.
Overall, I really enjoyed my first play-through, and I look forward to my next one soon! If you are a fan of (relatively) short RPGs, definitely consider buying this game!
This game is definitely worth the price. You get a game with multiple endings. The story is well written, I actually cared about the characters, the combat is interesting, the music used in the game was well chosen. There's no proper controller support would be my only gripe, but you can use one, it's just the buttons are mapped wierd and may take some time to get used to. If your worried about getting just another crap RPG Maker game, this is not one of those. There's a prequel to this game as well that's free that is worth playing as well since it introduces a lot of lore.
In Short: Interesting game with multiple endings and achievements. Playing the first, Crimson Light, helps, but is not necessary. More than worth the price.

Crimson Shift is the sequel to Crimson Light, although Crimson Light came out after this one did (at least one steam). You play the character Naokee as she tries to remember who she was, how she can escape her assassin lifestyle, and just who the mysterious person in red who chases after her is.
What a mouthful.
Anway, the game plays very nicely, with minimal errors (there is a nasty crash error that can happen during some boss fights, so save often!) and a very interesting combat system. In fact, it is one of the more unique I’ve seen for RPG Maker, and flows very nicely. Now if only I could understand what I was doing half the time ;P
I really liked the guard system, but to get the most out of it, you need to watch for ‘Boss Tells’ otherwise you may waste it on smaller damage, or worse, use it at the wrong time and negate it for when you DO need it the most.
The story can get a little confusing at times, especially if you haven't played Crimson Light, but thankfully it tends to explain itself shortly after. I can’t really get TOO much into it (spoilers) but suffice to say things really turn around and come out towards the end.
What is also very nice is that after you beat the game, it gives you the option of starting a new game with all your existing equipment. You start at level 1, but it gives you a good edge over enemies, making playing all over again for the other endings less of a chore.
+Custom Art for both the busts and battles
+Interesting and unique battle system
+Has a New Game+ mode
+Multiple Endings
+Minimap system with Quest Markers
+Achievements (For those who care)
+Illustrated ‘cutscenes’
=Combat can be confusing if you don’t pay attention
=Minimap can only be used outside
=Has a save reminder system, but it disappears about halfway through the game
=Game’s story doesn’t require you to have played Crimson Light, but it helps a lot.
-One boss has a one hit kill ability (I have heard this may be adjusted) that you have to be very careful to avoid
-Random crashes during battles (rare, but it can happen. Save often!)
This game manages to keep its grip on me the whole time through. I almost instantly connected with all of the characters and they all are written in a way that they're each unique individuals and they have their own personalities. I also felt something extra for some of them because I played another game called Crimson Light that tells a story that's tied to this game.
The story was really interesting and engaging. The city has it's own feeling and it works nicely with how the story revolves. The people of the city felt like they belonged there and weren't just random npcs that are there just so it wouldn't feel empty. There are some choices in the game that really feel like you're making a difference in how the main character reacts to everything. The choices are pointed out to the player in a way that it really matters what you chose.
The battle mechanics are done very well, I usually don't like the basic fighting system in rpg maker games but in this one it's more active, with all the combos and buffs and everything. It feels very refreshing and kind of something I haven't seen before. It was challenging at points but not too much, and most definitely never got boring. I felt that the balancing was perfect, and the way to get exp from sources other than the fights alone is good because some players tend to avoid fighting.
The minigames were really fun and simple and didn't feel forced or too much at all. They were placed in fitting places and worked together with all things related to them. Oh and I danced for like 30mins straight, got all the rewards.
The mapping was great, didn't see anything that would feel out of place. There was only a couple maps that may have felt a little empty but in total it was really well crafted. All the places I explored were accessible and felt natural.
There were only some minor bugs with the game, nothing too serious. Mostly just errors in grammar and I have pointed out everything I found to the dev.
All in all, Crimson Shift is one of the better rpg maker games I've played and it definitely deserves more attention. Go ahead and buy it and play it, it is more than worth it for it's price. I took me just under 8 hours to finish the game.
Great job indeed! Looking forward to more from the dev! :)
This looks good to me. I only played a little but want to play more.
I really like the clicking sounds in the text and feel of this game so far.
Style is great and the combat is really fun.
Will edit later
